Coulson and his team are haunted by a mysterious force that threatens to destroy them all, and only a secret from May’s past can save them.

!!Tropes:

* AntiVillain: Tobias is not trying to hurt Hannah, he's trying to protect her. It's not very comforting, but it's a far cry from the killer or demon everyone originally thought him to be.
* TheAtoner: Both Hannah and Tobias are trying to make up for their mistakes.
* BrokenBird: Coulson tells Skye about May's DarkAndTroubledPast and how she used to be a warmer person before a certain mission.
* CallBack:
** Coulson's wristwatch communicator makes a return. He and Skye use it when their radio is broken. Then it's turned into a radio detonator so they can break the door lock. Coulson is bummed at having to sacrifice the watch; only twenty were made.
** At the beginning, Coulson brings up Skye's handling of Mike Peterson in the pilot as a reason she's only going to observe and not participate in talking to Hanna.
* ClosedDoorRapport: When Skye finally succeeds in talking to Hannah, the door to the Cage is between them. The screen splits for it.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: We find out about May's; a rescue mission that was traumatic for an unexplained reason.
* EpisodeOnAPlane: The bulk of the episode is spent on the Bus.
* Expy: Another character reminiscent of an existing Marvel hero: while teleporting is a fairly common power, doing so by traveling through a Hell-dimension in a puff of smoke is unique to the ComicBook/XMen's Nightcrawler. There's also the fact that both characters are very religious.
* Fanservice: May topless from the back and Ward in nothing but a towel.
* FantasticScience: [=SHIELD=] has protocols for approaching Gifted people.
* FriendlyScheming: Fitz and Simmons are disappointed that they never got to prank freshmen back at the academy, then decide that Skye is essentially a freshman and spend the episode planning to prank her. May turns the tables on them at the end.
* GodIsGood: Hannah believes God is punishing her for the accident and Skye uses this trope to calm her down and build rapport. She recalls the phrase "God is Love" from her nun-run orphanage.
* HollywoodBoardGames: At the end of the episode, Team Coulson plays TabletopGame/Scrabble to destress from the episode's events. DitzyGenius Simmons lets her bookworm side shine by cobbling up the word aglet from her tiles. The others react by asking WhatTheHeckIsAnAglet until Skye googles it.
* JumpScare: Fitz sets one up in anticipation of pranking Skye. In all the horror with Tobias running around hurting people, Fitz forgets about it and everyone ends up getting scared by it, him most of all.
-->Fitz: Obviously I set this up before we knew about the dimension hopping psychopath!
* ManChild: Tobias, as inferred by Skye. He causes problems so Hannah will pay him attention; like the boy in the sandbox that tugs on a girl's pigtails.
* MindOverMatter: What the team thinks about Hanna initially. They were wrong.
* NoodleIncident: It's not clear what May did to deal with the Gifted person in her past, but whatever it was changed her completely.
* NotHelpingYourCase: When they first investigate Hanna, her distress seems to be causing her to endanger others. Coulson swears they mean her no harm... then May shoots her in the back with the Night-Night gun.
* NotSoAboveItAll: May's prank on Fitz is the first indication she's starting to emotionally heal.
* NotSoDifferentRemark: Coulson tells Skye that May used to be "warm, reckless and believed rules were meant to be broken". Then he asks Skye if this sounds familiar.
%%* OneWordTitle
* OurGhostsAreDifferent: Technically, the "ghost" is a still-living physical being, but the story has a lot of trappings of a ghost haunting: things moving (apparently) on their own, someone appearing and disappearing, mentions of "hell", etc.
* PsychopathicManchild: Obviously, the thing to do when someone upsets your crush is to blow up their gas station or try to run them over.
* ScrabbleBabble: At the end of the episode, most of Coulson's team are playing TabletopGame/Scrabble (or at least, [=UpWords=]). Simmons plays "aglet", which the others protest isn't a word. Settled when Skye looks it up online.
* ScreamsLikeALittleGirl: Fitz accuses Simmons of this earlier on. She counters that she is a girl. Fitz screams this way later on after being scared by his own (forgotten) prank.
* ShoutOut:
** When Coulson radios for help, the callsign of the Bus is "SHIELD-616", referencing the "normal" earth in the Franchise/MarvelUniverse, Earth-616.
** Skye also mentions Hogwarts.
* ShroudedInMyth: "The Cavalry", whose exploits become more ridiculous every year among cadets at the Academy.
* StalkerWithACrush: Tobias to Hannah, both less disturbing than normal (he's just a normal guy who didn't know how to talk to the girl he likes) and more (he sabotaged a particle accelerator). Skye notes that he's acting like a kid with a crush.
* StealthHiBye: Tobias pulls it a lot with the teleporting power and everything. Then May pulls it on him, disappearing in the space of a half-second black out right as he's about to whack her with a wrench.
* TalkingTheMonsterToDeath: May confronts Tobias, and convinces him to stop "protecting" Hannah for her own sake, since his current actions are only dragging her to hell with him. He realizes this, and lets himself slip through.
* TeleporterAccident: The rough theory goes that the scientists running the particle accelerator were trying to recreate the rifts from Film/ThorTheDarkWorld. Then Tobias came in and sabotaged a minor part, which snowballed into a detonation that trapped him between two worlds. He's able to move between them, but is slowly losing himself to the other one.
* TeleportSpam: Tobias makes good use of being stuck between worlds, such as disappearing to dodge attacks, enter locked rooms, and so forth.
* TooDumbToLive: Tobias repeatedly sabotaged a particle accelerator in order to get Hanna's attention.
* ToplessnessFromTheBack: May in the beginning.
* WhatTheHeckIsAnAglet: Simmons uses "aglet" during a word game. Ward, Skye, and Coulson complain that it's not a word and have to look it up.
-->Ward: She used her Britishness against us!
* WrenchWhack: Tobias is lugging around a pipe wrench, which he was carrying during the accident. This serves as the first hint that there's more to the accident than first appears; a pipe wrench is not the proper tool to be tightening bolts with. They're called a "pipe" wrenches for a reason; they're designed to be used in tandem when fitting piping together. The proper tool to use to loosen or tighten bolts would be a standard wrench or rachet wrench with socketed, variable-sized head attachments.
* YouNeedToGetLaid: Skye's new opinion on May is that she wouldn't be so stiff if she got laid regularly. She tells this to Ward, not knowing he and May slept together the previous night. To his credit, Ward manages to show very little reaction despite the sudden comment.
