* SadisticChoice:
** In Chapter 886, Oven [[IHaveYourWife captures Chiffon and uses her as a hostage]] to try lure the Firetank Pirates to him. Bege either has to flee Totto Land at Chiffon's behest, at the cost of losing his wife and leaving his infant son motherless, or he tries to save Chiffon and gets everyone killed in the process. Being Bege, he decides to TakeAThirdOption by [[ISurrenderSuckers pulling a bluff]] and blasting Oven in the face with an explosive round from a far distance.
** In Chapter 892, Perospero believes he's in one when it comes to the wedding cake they see is on Bege's ship and he believes that Bege poisoned it, [[DramaticIrony which he didn't]]. If he destroys the cake, then they have nothing to calm down Big Mom's rage and the whole country will be destroyed, but if they allow Big Mom to eat the "poison" cake and she dies then it'll be the end of the Big Mom pirates and the country. Fortunately, Big Mom eats the cake and nothing untoward happens, her hunger rampage cured. Unfortunately for the Straw Hats, that ''still'' doesn't stop Big Mom and her children from resuming their pursuit.
* SameSexTriplets: As with the case of AlwaysIdenticalTwins, this trope is played straight, subverted, and averted at the same time.
** Katakuri and his younger brothers, Daifuku and Oven, are revealed to be male triplets in an SBS issue, yet they seem to be fraternal, as they look ''nothing'' alike aside from being ginormously huge. Despite being younger, Daifuku looks like he could be the oldest of his brothers.
** Opera was also revealed in an SBS issue to be the oldest of quintuplets, his younger brothers being Counter, Cadenza, Cabaletta, and Gala. All of Opera's brothers resemble him heavily with their head bumps and beards.
** Smoothie, Citron, and Cinnamon are implied, and later confirmed to be triplet sisters in the [[AllThereInTheManual One Piece Magazine Vol. 4]]. It's subverted; despite all three of them being Longleg-Human hybrids with super-long hair, they are fraternal triplets and thus look nothing alike.
** Amande is revealed to be the second-born of female quadruplets, her sisters being (from oldest to youngest) Mondée, Hachée, and Effilée. It's subverted as they are all fraternal siblings; despite them all of them being Snakeneck hybrids and wearing wide-brimmed hats, Mondée is plump and more-human looking, while Hachée and Effilée resemble Amande closely. Ash in particular is Amande's splitting image save for her [[SharpDressedMan mobster-style suit]].
** Played with in the Charlotte decuplets. Half of the decuplets are boys while the other half are girls. The 5 boys all have very similar appearances and wear matching clothes. The 5 girls each have slight variations in how they style their hair and in their clothing but otherwise look the same. Essentially, the decuplets consists of two pairs of identical quintuplets.
** Averted with Cracker, Moscato, and Mobile. Cracker and Moscato are the only males in each set of fraternal triplets, with their younger siblings being girls (Custard and Angel for Cracker, Mash and Cornstarch for Moscato). Therefore, they look nothing alike.
** Averted with Mobile, Marble, Myukuru, and Maple, who are all fraternal quadruplets. Mobile is the oldest and the only male in the set, and Maple is more heavyset than her siblings. On the other hand, Marble and Myukuru resemble each other more.
** Subverted with Kanto, Kato, and Montb, who are male fraternal triplets. Kanto and Montb are heavyset, while Kato is a skinny, scarecrow-like human.
** Subverted with Nusstorte, Basskarte, and Dosmarche, who are male fraternal triplets. Aside from their gigantic heights compared to most of their siblings, they look nothing alike.
** On the Vinsmokes' side, Judge's sons (including Sanji) are also quadruplets. Subverted as they are fraternal, with a lot of traits including AnimeHair, the direction of their swirled eyebrows, and heights to tell them apart.
* SaveTheVillain: Despite loathing his father and brothers ([[AbusiveParents and]] [[BigBrotherBully for good]] [[AnnoyingYoungerSibling reason]]), Sanji's compassion is such that he doesn't want his family to be executed at the wedding, especially his sister Reiju, who he truly cares about. He later requests Luffy's help in saving them and, after gaining several powerful allies, he eventually succeeds.
* TheScapegoat: Caesar pins the blame on Luffy and Law when he explains to Big Mom why he wasn't able to finish creating the drug which will turn her whole family into giants, when in reality it's because the drug is impossible to create or use without chopping off years of someone's life, like the kid test subjects in Punk Hazard.
* ScarfOfAsskicking:
** Except for Sanji, all of the Vinsmoke children are royal Germa 66 commanders who wear different-colored ascots in addition to their {{Badass Cape}}s. "Poison Pink" Reiju consumed extremely deadly poisons with no ill effect (including one that was killing ''[[AcquiredPoisonImmunity Luffy]]''), and she also easily drop-kicked her youngest brother Yonji into the ocean; the eldest brothers Ichiji and Niji stopped a civil war [[CurbStompBattle in four hours]]; and Yonji openly challenged the extremely powerful Straw Hats to a fight.
** Big Mom's 14th daughter Charlotte Smoothie wears a large, long scarf, and is one of her mother's Sweet Commanders. Smoothie's brother, Charlotte Katakuri, also wears one that covers half his face and resembles shredded potato.
* ScaryTeeth:
** Charlotte Praline has shark's teeth due to being a half-hammerhead shark mermaid, but it's subverted since she's a nice person overall.
** Charlotte Poire has a grinning mouth full of sharp teeth as well. She looks like she has a GlasgowGrin like her brother Katakuri, but turns out that her grin was wide enough to seemingly connect with the stitches on her panda hat. That being said, she's a loyal daughter of Big Mom.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere:
** Once Jimbei learns about the assassination plot on the Vinsmokes and correctly guesses that Luffy and his crew will try something crazy to save Sanji, he fully commits on betraying Big Mom and tells the Sun Pirates to leave the island during the tea party.
** Both the Sun Pirates and Charlotte Praline finally make good on their desire to leave Totto Land in Chapter 860. To prevent anyone from finding out, they tie Pekoms, an associate of Big Mom, to a rock after healing his wounds from being shot by Capone Bege.
* ScryVsScry: When Luffy's Observation Haki grows to the point that it can match Katakuri's, their final clash becomes this, with both able to predict each other's movements.
* SecretTestOfCharacter: Pudding unwittingly gives one to Sanji while trying to horrifying him into shock, at which point she will shoot him. Sanji passes the test by actually complimenting Pudding's Third Eye (which we see in a flashback that ''everyone'' treated Pudding cruelly because of that), dropping Pudding's guard enough that she isn't able to harm him any more.
* {{Seers}}: Charlotte Katakuri of the Sweet Commanders has pushed his Observation Haki so much that he can see precise images of immediate future outcome and interpret them with 100% accuracy. [[SpiderSense It also helps him discern the future actions and true motives of people,]] [[CombatClairvoyance and react accordingly]].
* SharedFamilyQuirks:
** Big Mom's eldest son Perospero shares her love of sweets, bearing candy-themed Devil Fruit powers and a constant habit of licking.
** Judge, Reiju, and Niji share Sanji's preference in kicking (although Niji does punch as well). Ichiji has his ability to keep a cool head when it counts, while Niji has Sanji's [[HotBlooded temper]] turned up to eleven (and not PlayedForLaughs either). In addition, all of Sanji's siblings have his [[HandsomeLech perverted tendencies]] (though it's gender-inverted with Reiju).
** Sanji and Reiju both inherited their deceased mother's compassion. This made Sanji a target of abuse for his brothers and father, while Reiju hid it [[StepfordSmiler with smiles]] out of fear of becoming abused as well.
** One of Big Mom's youngest daughters, Charlotte Anana, inherited her homicidal tendencies as she has a penchant of mutilating her stuffed animal with knives and loves to sadistically torment her siblings.
** Surprisingly, the beautiful Charlotte Pudding is a very cruel and sadistic psychopath like her mother, who is incredibly good at playing the "NiceGuy" act to fool unsuspecting persons. According to her, she's one of Big Mom's "favorites" because of it. Ironically, she didn't start out that way, and it was only after a lifetime of abuse and torment for being three-eyed that Pudding became so broken and crazy.
* SharpDressedMan:
** The Sanji Retrieval Team all wear formal outfits in Chapter 858 during their meeting with Capone Bege. It's enforced by Bege himself, who says that he doesn't like having business with messy people.
** A few of Big Mom's children also wear suits, such as Charlotte Hachée, Charlotte Dacquoise, and the male half of the Charlotte decuplets.
* SherlockScan: In Chapter 864, even after Brook destroys the portrait of Mother Carmel, Big Mom doesn't unleash her scream because she doesn't know what to be angry at more since, just before that, Luffy destroyed the wedding cake and ruined the assassination plot on the Vinsmoke. When Brook suggests to show the broken portrait to Big Mom to get her angry at that, Capone has some doubts until he notices Katakuri approaching them while looking pale which means he knows that Katakuri foresee a horrific future indicating that it will work.
* ShipSinking: Sanji's potential relationship with Pudding was hit with a warhead in Chapter 850 when it was revealed that she was EvilAllAlong, dashing the hopes of Pudding/Sanji fans in one fell swoop. However, once Pudding's past was revealed and Sanji brought out the nice side of her that was repressed by all the hurt and anger, this seems to have been subverted.
* ShockAndAwe: Judge is able to electrify his kicks and spear thanks to highly advanced technology, while his second-eldest son, Niji, can generate electricity due to being a genetically enhanced SuperSoldier Tykebomb. Niji can also [[SpellBlade imbue weapons with his own powers]], giving them electrical properties.
* ShooTheDog: Sanji attempts to force Luffy and Nami to leave him behind when they find him. Luffy and Nami, understandably, are ''very'' upset by this. Later, Sanji attempts to get Luffy off the island again after giving him the bento. Luffy won't take no for an answer and punches Sanji to make him return to the crew for good.
* ShootTheMessenger: In the anime, after being told that Cracker lost to Luffy, Big Mom angrily stole the lifespans of the two subordinates who told her.
* ShootingSuperman:
** Bege opens fire at Katakuri with his castle body armaments, forgetting (as he has been Big Mom's crew for at least a year) that he has a Paramecia ability that would negate his bullets.
** Not long afterwards, Judge attacks Big Mom with his electrified spear. Big Mom just breaks off the tip with her ''teeth'', and then brings down a giant lightning bolt from Zeus while mocking him.
* ShoutOut:
** Similar to the ''Manga/{{Naruto}}'' tribute cover, the cover of Chapter 839 is one big tribute to ''Manga/{{Kochikame}}''. This along with other tributes found in other [[Magazine/ShonenJump Weekly Shonen Jump]] around the same time such as ''Manga/{{Toriko}}'' and ''Manga/MyHeroAcademia'' were made to commemorate Kochikame coming to an end after 40 years of publication.
** Cosette is likely one to the character of the same name from ''Literature/LesMiserables'', as both are adorable young girls who work for a family of abusive assholes.
** Chapter 840's cover is one of Oda's drawings per fan requests. The fan request was drawing Chopper along with Bepo, Kumashi, the Hiking Bear from Drum, and Bartholomew Kuma eating honey like ''Franchise/WinnieThePooh''.
** With the reveal in Chapter 850 that the Charlotte Family (who consist of several half siblings of all ages and [[MoralityKitchenSink morality]], grandchildren who [[TheFamilyThatSlaysTogether are active within the family opertions]], led by an [[EvilOldFolks elderly]] who has [[ExplosiveBreeder over eighty children]] [[ReallyGetsAround with many men]]) is planning to kill their allies, the Germa 66/Vinsmokes along with the Straw-Hats, during a wedding for a reward (read: steal their technology), using an ArrangedMarriage as an excuse and a ([[BitchInSheepsClothing willing, in this case]]) HoneyTrap ploy, the plot eerily starts to resemble something akin to ''[[Literature/ASongOfIceAndFire The Red]] [[Series/GameOfThrones Wedding]]''.
** "The Five Great Families of the West", the five enormous mafia gangs in the West Blue which Bege used to be a part of, is a references to the real-life "Five Families", the five major New York City organized crime families of the Italian American Mafia.
** During the tea party, Charlotte Pespero is dressed in similar garb to [[Film/WillyWonkaAndTheChocolateFactory Willy Wonka]], which is fitting considering his powers.
** The various sentient, talking inanimate objects living all over Totto Land and in Big Mom's house seem to have taken a cue from ''WesternAnimation/BeautyAndTheBeast''.
** Charlotte Brulee living in a gingerbread house in the woods and likened to a witch and wanting to cook the heroes alive in a boiling cauldron is probably a send-up to ''Literature/HanselAndGretel''.
* ShutUpHannibal: While fighting ''Big Mom'', of all people, Brook coldly replies to her death threats and remains confident that none of his allies will die.
-->'''Big Mom:''' ''Ma ma ma ma! That worst-case scenario you envision is rather tame!! Sanji not returning?! That's the worst thing you can imagine?! Nobody dies?!''
-->'''Brook:''' ''Young Lady, what kind of idiot draws up plans with the expectation of dying?''
* SkewedPriorities:
** A conversation between Big Mom and Sanji reveals that while Big Mom is angry at Luffy for beating up her son Cracker, she's more furious with the fact that Luffy (unknowingly) ate the monthly candy tribute that was supposed to be for her. It paints a sad picture of how little Big Mom actually cares for her children.
** While Whole Cake Chateau was collapsing, Morgans' was excitedly snapping pictures, the possibility that the Big Mom Pirates were finished being big news... before Stussy points out to him that as a flightless bird, he's in the same boat as them.
* SlaveToPR: One of the major themes of the Whole Cake Island arc is "reputation". Throughout this arc, the actions of many characters are driven by reputation, be it their own or their organization's, while others struggle over whether or not reputation is truly worth the cost to maintain it.
** Katakuri is completely devoted to maintaining his image as the "perfect" older brother, which is motivated by guilt that his childhood arrogance and recklessness led to his younger sister Brulee being horribly scarred by his bullies out of spite. He hides said mouth behind a scarf, hides his gluttonous habits from his family, and won't even let others see him so much as ''relax'' by laying down. Of course, such a facade can't be maintained ''all'' the time, so he has a "snack time" that he spends within a mochi-made house where he can finally act as himself. He is so dedicated to upholding this reputation that when Luffy broke apart said house during one such "snack time," revealing his true nature to the chefs that made his food, ''he killed them''. So, it says a lot about how much he has come to respect Luffy when he permanently discards his image and this mindset for the sake of having a fair fight with him.
** This and VillainCred is actually the motivation behind the Big Mom Pirates chasing down both the Straw Hats and the Firetanks. It was already damaging enough that both groups managed to ruin their plan to kill the Vinsmokes and attempted to assassinate Big Mom, but if they were to escape, their name would be tarnished almost irreversibly and the entire event would be seen as a sign of weakness that one of the other Emperors or even the Marines might take advantage of. That's why, as Mont-d'Or put it to "Big News" Morgan, they "swallowed their pride" and sent all the forces they could muster to Cacao Island to ambush Luffy before he can reunite with the crew -- as "embarrassing" it may be to send so many people against one man, they simply can't ''afford'' to let him escape, no matter how minuscule the chance may be, since it would be ''even worse'' if he actually did. Seeing as the Straw Hats have faced such odds before and come out on top, ''constantly'', it's not as overkill as one would think.
** In public, Pudding has a reputation of being a very sweet girl, which hides her duplicitous sadism and psychological brokenness that her family uses as a trap to lure people in. Having a Devil Fruit that can modify people's memories helps. Deep down, she actually is what she presents, it's just buried so deep because she believes that no one would love a monster like her. When Sanji gives her the compassion she never received, Pudding decides to side with the Straw Hats and help them for real.
* SmallRoleBigImpact: Had Sora not taken the gene experiment-reversing drug in a desperate gambit to save her quadruplet sons after Judge experimented on them in utero, the ''entire story'' wouldn't have happened. Sanji would have never become a great cook or a Straw Hat, and more tellingly, the Vinsmoke dynasty would've been completely wiped out because Sanji would not have the necessary compassion to make friends and compliment [[BrokenBird Pudding]]'s ThirdEye.
* TheSocialDarwinist: Deconstructed with Vinsmoke Judge. He believes so fervently that VirtueIsWeakness and MightMakesRight, that he physically and psychologically modified his own children to follow his values. He sees Sanji as his greatest disappointment and wishes he never existed because he was weaker than his siblings (i.e "like a normal human" according to one of Judge's scientists), despite receiving the same modifications as his quadruplet brothers. Naturally, Judge ended up destroying his family, with his wife dying because she disagreed with the treatment of their sons, and in a moment of great irony, he later outright begs for someone to save him in Chapter 864, when he and his family find himself surrounded by Big Mom's children/crew on all fronts with no way out, restrained by hard candy to their chairs and their weapons/raid suits secretly confiscated. Not only do his own children ridicule him and accept the inevitable, but his would-be killers (and some of the wedding attendees) join in as well, with Perospero in particular relishing in giving him a BreakingSpeech. As the final nail in the coffin, Judge is further humiliated when he's saved from death by Sanji, forever indebting the Vinsmoke patriarch to his "failure" of a son.
* SoreLoser: Vinsmoke Judge ''really'' doesn't take it well when he realizes that Big Mom's going to assassinate him and his family, throwing his decades-long revenge plan under the bus.
* SoProudOfYou: Twice with the Vinsmokes.
** When Sanji disowns Luffy and Nami as his friends and proclaims himself to be a Vinsmoke like his family, his brothers are seen laughing, and Judge even praises him for acting like "true" royalty. [[YourApprovalFillsMeWithShame Sanji breaks down in tears over having to cruelly reject his friends to save them]].
** It's revealed in the beginning of the Wano arc that Niji gave Sanji his own raid suit before the Straw Hats left Totto Land, a sign that the family has come to respect his strength now. Naturally, Sanji hates the gift and exclaims that he doesn't need science to help him fight, much to Nami and Usopp's dismay.
* SpannerInTheWorks:
** Lola was one for Big Mom. Turns out Big Mom also wanted to become the Pirate King, and arranged her daughter Lola to marry Loki, the prince of Elbaf; that marriage would have softened the relations between Big Mom and the giants, and put Elbaf's legendary army on her side. Lola running away put her plans down the crapper, and now she wants to kill her for it.
** Vinsmoke Sora strongly disapproved of her husband Judge's plans to turn their children into military commanders and utterly remorseless {{Tykebomb}}s that will help Germa 66 conquer the world, so she secretly took a drug that undid her sons' genetic enhancements at the cost of her own life. While she wasn't successful with Ichiji, Yonji, and Niji, she did save Sanji. [[LikeFatherLikeSon It's clear where Sanji's habit of ruining villainous plans came from]].
** Sanji unintentionally ruins Pudding's attempt to kill him not because he was planning to dodge the bullet from her gun, but because he told her she looks beautiful when she revealed her third eye. She's so touched by this that she can't bring herself to kill him and breaks down in tears, which completely throws Big Mom's assassination plan in disarray and causes the Vinsmoke family, Big Mom's intended targets, to become suspicious.
** Jimbei has definitely been an major asset for the heroes and a monkey wrench for the Big Mom Pirates. Not only does he manage to free Luffy and Nami after they're captured by Big Mom's Pirates right on the verge of them being tortured, he's the one who gets Luffy to partner up with Bege to go ruin the wedding and finally get Sanji back. Likewise he manages to save the crew ''again'' but using his helmsman skill and knowledge of the ocean to keep the Sunny from keeping crushed by a humongous tidal wave Big Mom sent after them.
** Sanji's siblings eventually get in on this, too -- after being nearly killed during the tea party, the Vinsmokes, now very pissed off, decide they want to shake things up and dish out some payback for the Charlotte family. Through Niji, they wrangle information on the Straw Hats' rendezvous location from Mont-d'Or, which leads to Germa 66 making a rather unexpected appearance on Cacao Island. The result was Oven's army failing to get Luffy ''and'' Sanji, as the Vinsmokes' timely intervention allowed them both to escape fast towards the ''Thousand Sunny'', while the enemy side is having a hard time dealing with Germa forces.
* SpellBlade: Niji can imbue his own rapier with electricity, which allows him to deal extra damage when he carves out an escape path for Sanji and Luffy while on the run.
* SpikesOfVillainy: Charlotte Katakuri wears a spiked bracelet, spiked leg braces, ''and'' has very large spurs on his boots. Each of his knee-pads also has a single spike for good measure.
* SpySpeak: To ensure that no one will be affected by Big Mom's scream, Capone made sure everyone has the [[SesquipedalianLoquaciousness "Invisible Symphonia System"]], a.k.a. ear plugs, with them to block the sound. When Capone sees that the assassination plan on Big Mom is back on track, he shouted to his "allied forces" to equip their "invisible symphonias". Big Mom's crew, thinking Capone is referring to them, has no idea what he's shouting about, but the Straw Hats knew exactly what to do.
* StaringDownCthulhu: Happens thrice.
** Subverted. Charlotte Moscato ''tries'' to do this with Big Mom when she goes on a hunger-induced rampage through Whole Cake Island, trying to calm her down until someone can satisfy her sweet cravings. It fails when he gets scared at the last minute, and he has his ''entire life span'' yanked out of him. Ouch. DoubleSubverted later that we see Big Mom failed to take his lifespan, as he ends up pretty much alive.
** In Chapter 863, Jimbei is more successful -- [[ImNotAfraidOfYou his conviction and faith in Luffy is so strong that Big Mom is unable to take his soul]]. Everyone is amazed; even Chopper is moved to tears!
** Earlier Brook gets confronted by Big Mom herself during his raid of her treasure room. He successfully stares her down, but it still doesn't stop her from curb-stomping him.
* StartsStealthilyEndsLoudly: The arc begins with the Sanji Retrieval Team sneaking into Totland to save Sanji and get rubbings of Big Mom's poneglyphs. It ends with them hightailing it out of Totland with the full force of the Big Mom Pirates after them. It's played with as the Big Mom Pirates were aware of their presence for the first half, until cases of PoorCommunicationKills mislead them into thinking the team was wiped out. Naturally, the loud part comes when the Straw Hats play WeddingSmashers.
* StatuesqueStunner: Unlike her {{Gonk}} mother Big Mom, Charlotte Smoothie is a large and beautiful woman.
* StatusQuoIsGod: '''Averted big time.'''
** This is the only arc which doesn't end with the BigBad (Big Mom)'s defeat, rather TheDragon (Katakuri).
** Jimbei finally joins the Straw Hats, after 3 arcs of delay.
** This also is the only arc where the fates of allies of the Straw Hats (Germa 66 and Sun Pirates) is uncertain in the end.
** The Big Mom Pirates do ''not'' fall in the arc's end, unlike every other organization and crew going against the Straw Hats. Instead, they plan to get revenge on the Straw Hats for humiliating them in their own territory.
* StealthPun: When Cracker's true form is revealed, part of his hairstyle resembles a pair of sparklers whose ends are actually lit on fire in the same manner as actual sparklers. Said sparklers also flare up considerably when he's enraged. He's a "Firecracker" in this regard.
* StevenUlyssesPerhero: A few of Big Mom's children have abilities according to her names.
** Charlotte Cracker is named after a harder, crunchier type of biscuit, and he consumed the Bisc-Bisc Devil Fruit that allows him to create and multiply biscuits at will. He can create and multiply his large Biscuit Soldiers and wear them as armor.
** Charlotte Smoothie is named after a blended drink of fruits/vegetables. She has a Devil Fruit power that allows her to ''drain a person's life fluids and drink them''.
** Charlotte Opera is named after a type of cake that uses cream as one of its ingredients. He is a BlobMonster made of cream and can attack people with his body by making his cream "sweet" enough to burn his foes.
** Charlotte Perospero is named after the Japanese sound for licking. While his Devil Fruit power (creating candies) doesn't involve licking, he can turn people into candy that he will lick to his heart's content.
** Charlotte Oven can generate intense body heat, such that anything he hits with becomes very hot to touch, like baked stuff fresh out of the oven.
** Charlotte Daifuku is named after a type of mochi that has filling. His "filling" is a powerful genie that attacks for him, courtesy of his Devil Fruit powers.
* StepfordSmiler: Justified and deconstructed with Reiju. She is often seen smiling, but she only plays along with her family's beliefs out of fear that she'll be abused and bullied by them like what Sanji suffered. The only times her smiles become genuine is when she is alone with Sanji or their (dead) mother. Eventually, she became so guilt-ridden for condoning her family's actions and following the Vinsmoke legacy against her will, that she ''wants'' to die in order to atone. Sanji saving her in time during the Vinsmokes' DarkestHour gives her the will to live.
* SternChase: After the wedding ends up crashed and ruined, Big Mom and her children go on a dogged pursuit of the Straw Hats and the Firetank Pirates. Even when the former seemingly lose them a few time, they don't give up the chase and manage to keep closing the distance, leading to a few close calls that result in Jimbei staying behind to cover for the Straw Hats' escape, despite being a newly-minted member of their crew.
* TheStoic:
** Vinsmoke Ichiji is a DeadpanSnarker who barely emotes most of the time. Must be his CoolShades. However, he was much more expressive as a child.
** Charlotte Katakuri usually doesn't show anything beyond a murderous glare. This turns out to be part of a facade he put up, since he sees his "real" self as shameful to his family's expectations. It's also necessary, since using Observation Haki as a source of foresight requires ''massive'' concentration.
* StolenMacguffinReveal: When Brook and Pedro attempt to get rubbings of Big Mom's Poneglyphs, we're lead to believe that Big Mom had busted into the treasure vault before Brook could start on the first rubbing, and wasn't able to get past her despite putting up a valiant fight. However, we get a hint of foreshadowing when it's shown that his carrying case is mysteriously empty. Then, in perhaps the most awesome moment Brook has had yet, he reveals that he ''did'' succeed in getting the rubbings before Big Mom busted in, and hid them [[ChekhovsSkill in his skull]] while pretending he hadn't gotten them yet.
* StormingTheCastle: The whole arc revolves around the Straw Hats invading Big Mom's territory, Tottoland, in order to get Poneglyph rubbings and get Sanji back from his ArrangedMarriage. They succeed against extremely overwhelming odds, but lose a close ally (Pedro) in the process.
* StrongFamilyResemblance:
** Capone Bege's infant son looks exactly like him, ''complete with a cigar-like pacifier, stubble, and hat''. Initially in the anime, Pez looked basically like a mini version of Bege with [[AdaptationDyeJob black hair and clothes]] but his stubbled upper lip isn't colored like his father. In the manga and later in the anime, Pez not only looks like his father complete with colored upper lip but he's also essentially a [[PatchworkKids patchwork child]] since he also possesses his mother's pink hair and wears a baby suit that's more similar in color scheme to that of his mother's outfit.
** All of the Vinsmoke siblings resemble Sanji to some degree, with bangs and UnusualEyebrows; Yonji is noted to be Sanji's splitting image, sans the bangs.
** The Vinsmoke siblings also resemble their deceased mother to some degree and inherited her bangs, with Reiju resembling her the most (if a bit fierce-looking).
** Charlotte Chiffon heavily resembles her runaway pirate sister Lola in all but hair, though it's justified with their being identical twins. At the same time, both inherited their {{Gonk}}iness, GagLips, and too small eyes from their father Pound. Some of their Gonkiness also come from Big Mom as well.
** The very young Charlotte brothers Dolce and Dragée also resemble each other pretty closely.
** Charlotte Brulee, aside from her facial scarring, looks like Big Mom if she went on a (very) strict diet.
** Charlottes Praline and Smoothie inherited their huge size from their mother.
** Charlotte Compote, Big Mom's eldest daughter, resembles her in all but hat and hair.
** As confirmed in [[AllThereInTheManual the SBS of volume 85]], the three characters who look like Opera are his full brothers. Specifically, Opera and them are part of a quintuplet batch with Opera being the eldest. Only Gala the youngest quintuplet has yet to make an appearance.
** A number of Big Mom's daughters are very good-looking compared to their {{Gonk}}y 68-year-old mother. [[AllThereInTheManual The SBS of Volume 86]] however reveals that Big Mom was actually [[IWasQuiteALooker quite a looker in the past]], most especially when she was 28-years-old. Given Big Mom's appearance back then, it's clear where some of her prettier daughters got their good looks.
* StunnedSilence: Combined with a MassOhCrap and {{Jaw Drop}}s, this was the Big Mom Pirates' reaction when Brulee revealed that Luffy hadn't escaped from Katakuri, but had taken him down.
* SuperSpeed: Niji is ''incredibly'' fast, more so than his brother [[LightningBruiser Sanji]]. This is what allows him to speedily get Sanji and Luffy out of Cacao Island, and kick them both towards the ''Thousand Sunny''.
* SuperToughness: All of the Vinsmoke children except Sanji has some sort of "outer skeleton" that makes them incredibly durable, and is implied to be made of metal, as Ichiji's body made a metallic noise when a young Sanji tried punching him. As adults, Niji was able to crack his broken jaw back into position immediately after Sanji broke it with a single kick, apparently without much discomfort at all. The only thing that could puncture that outer skeleton is the Charlotte family's candy jacket pistols.
* SupremeChef:
** Just like Sanji, Pudding seems to be an excellent chef, good enough to build a freaking delicious house out of chocolate, which [[BigEater Luffy]] and [[SweetTooth Chopper]] approve of. Her skills as a chocolatier made her an acceptable replacement as Minister of Cacao Island in the eyes of her family after Lola, the previous holder, ran away, but Pudding has no intention of taking over since she thinks Lola is a far better Minister than she would be and wants Lola to reclaim it.
** According to Sanji, Cosette is a great chef; though sadly for her, she works for the Vinsmokes, and especially [[{{Jerkass}} Niji]].
** Streusen, Big Mom's head chef, is a zigzagged example -- everything he makes tastes extremely delicious, but only the foods he bothers to make. His Cook-Cook Devil Fruit can turn anything into food, but they're just crappy-tasting knock-offs of the real thing.
** Chiffon is also as skilled as Pudding, as she helped Sanji recreate the wedding cake Big Mom wanted by creating lighter-than-air chiffon cakes.
* SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome:
** If your headshot is on a wanted poster, it will give the Vinsmokes easy leverage to hunt down your true identity. Sanji found that out the hard way when his wanted poster and bounty was updated after his battle with Duval back in Sabaody Archipelago, allowing Judge to bring him back for the alliance with Big Mom.
** When Cracker's biscuits get soggy, they become edible like in real life.
** Luffy may be tough, but when confronted by Big Mom's entire force after coming off both a tough 10 hour fight with Cracker and getting beat up by Sanji (who's trying to get Nami and him to turn back). Even he can only last so long before he's ultimately defeated.
** When Capone Bege checks to see if Luffy and the gang are ready for the plan, they were already asleep. Considering they spent the entire day fighting off Big Mom's crew, searching for each other (and Sanji), and having the meeting to discuss the plan hours before the wedding, they never got a chance to rest.
** Later, when he faces off against Charlotte Katakuri, Bege points out to him ([[BadassBoast in an epic manner]]) that if he can change the future that he looks into, so can everyone.
** Pudding grew up bullied, unloved, and treated like a useful asset than a person all her life, creating a severe inferiority complex and a duplicitous nature. Thus, when she's given her first compliments, the first thing she does is go against her family and help the Straw Hats escape Totto Land.
** After the Straw Hat-Firetank Pirate Alliance saves the Vinsmokes and Bege's assassination plot fails, they end up completely surrounded and overwhelmed by the enraged Charlotte family, who are all incredible powerhouses compared to the protagonists. The only miracle they had was Whole Cake Chateau suddenly tipping over and falling...
** Even though Streusen managed to save everyone from being crushed by the Whole Cake Chateau by transforming it into whipped cream and sponge cake, the people at the bottom of the chateau are still in danger if they're instantly crushed by the falling debris, or trapped underneath the cream and cake.
** Katakuri's Haki-based foresight relies on his tremendous concentration. When he is distracted and provoked into a rage during a vulnerable moment, he loses the ability to foresee things.
** Big Mom's crew may have a lot of strong and powerful people, but when Oven tries a YouShallNotPass on Bege's tank ship, he's immediately run over due to the size of the ship.
** Big Mom ends up getting slimmer after going eight hours chasing after the Straw Hats without a bite to eat, which has not gone without comment from her own children.
** Katakuri's desire for a beloved public image, and his efforts to keep it up, puts him under ''tremendous'' stress, so he has "snack times" where he could wind down and be himself in the comfort of isolation. If he did not have even that pleasure, then he would either go insane from the pressure, or slip up when everyone's watching.
** Perospero ends up losing his arm thanks to Pedro's attack but uses his candy powers to make a artificial arm. However this doesn't magically heal the wound[[note]]The stump was implicitly cauterized by the explosion[[/note]] and, after hours of helping Big Mom chase the Straw Hats, has to bow out to get it properly treated. When he makes the announcement that Big Mom was satisfied, he is too weak to get up from his chair.
** Whenever Big Mom goes on hunger-induced rampages, it's depicted realistically and horrifically as one would expect of a gigantic creature, human or not, rampaging in a populated area. People are ''terrified'' for their lives and are at great risk of either being killed by Big Mom, or getting killed by the falling debris from the surrounding buildings. These incidents are treated ''seriously'' by Big Mom's children, many of who are the equivalent of governors of their specific territories, and they take measures to ensure the safety of the general populace. It also happened in Elbaf when Big Mom was a child; when she went on a rampage during fasting, she not only razed the village looking for food, she killed one of the legendary giant heroes with her bare hands while crazed. As a result, the giants of Elbaf are not on good terms with her, even if they forgave her thanks to Mother Carmel's persuasion.
** Engineering one's children to have no fear or empathy at all will create exactly that: monsters that are incredibly cruel and completely unafraid of dying. Because of Judge's experiments, the Vinsmoke boys are utterly messed up through no fault of their own, and are unable to become good people because they can't understand the cruelty of their actions. When the Vinsmokes are rounded up for execution by the Charlotte family, Reiju notes how Judge's actions blew up in his face horribly, as his sons accept their death and ridicule him for being "pathetic".
** When Katakuri reveals to Brulee that his reputation of being perfect since he was born is a lie, Brulee reveals she already knew. This isn't just because she saw him through the mirrors, but also because she, along with his other siblings who are within his age group, grew up with him when they were kids so they knew what he was like before doing the "perfect brother" act. But when younger siblings who are way out of his age group, like Flampe, sees his mouth for the first time, they will be shocked by it due to Katakuri keeping his true self a secret from everyone, including his own family.
* {{Synchronization}}: Because his fortresses are part of his Devil Fruit power and essentially an extension of himself, Bege starts getting bloody injuries when Big Mom starts attacking his "Big Father" castle in an attempt to draw out the Straw Hats, feeling as if he was being punched by Big Mom herself.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:T]]
* TattooedCrook:
** Charloote Smoothie has a tattoo of a rose with thorny vines on her right thigh. She also works for Big Mom as her Sweet Commander.
** Smoothie's brother Katakuri also has tattoos, except his is skull-shaped and located on his upper arm and shoulder, as well as few stripes on his torso.
** Vinsmoke Ichiji has a tribal tattoo surrounding his '1' insignia on his upper right arm.
* TearsOfFear: During his VillainousBreakdown when he learns Big Mom plans to murder the Vinsmokes, Judge [[FaceDeathWithDespair cries out of fear]].
* TearsOfJoy:
** Poor Cosette has been working for a family whose members abused and criticized for so long that when [[SupremeChef Sanji]] defends her and ''compliments'' her cooking, the first thing she does is blush and cry out of sheer gratitude.
** After Bege does the impossible and rescues her from her much more powerful brother Oven, Chiffon is at first shocked, then cries out of happiness and relief while saying, "You big dummy."
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: Luffy, Bege and Caesar make it clear that they hate each other's guts, but Jimbei manages to convince them to put their differences aside while they work together to wreck Big Mom's tea party.
* TeethFlying:
** The aftermath of Cracker vs. Luffy has the former crashing into Sweets City, minus a few teeth.
** Luffy actually loses a tooth during Sanji's BreakHisHeartToSaveHim gambit. The gap remains noticeably present afterwards, at least until Luffy regenerates the tooth by drinking milk.
* TemptingFate:
** During an arranged meeting with her Sweet Commanders (who happen to be her children), Big Mom wonders why her son Cracker is running late and demands to know where he is. Cue a defeated Cracker crashing into her house, courtesy of Luffy, [[MassOhCrap which sends Whole Cake Island into lockdown]].
** After Katakuri ordered him to shoot down the Vinsmoke Family immediately, Perospero instead chooses to talk about his future-seeing brother and say that he, too, can "see the close future"... that the Vinsmokes are going to die. Then Big Mom's scream happened and Sanji and the Straw Hats save them.
** In the climax, the Big Mom Pirates have Sanji and Luffy cornered with one mocking them that they don't have enough people to help them escape. Cue the Germa 66, an entire army fleet, coming in for the save.
* ThenLetMeBeEvil: Pudding's StartOfDarkness backstory resulted in her becoming an AxCrazy {{Jerkass}} because she believed she was a monster for having a ThirdEye. Sanji [[ArmorPiercingQuestion would later make her realize that isn't true at all]].
* ThereWasADoor: In the anime, when Oven first arrived at the Whole Cake Chateau, rather than wait for the guards to open the door for him, he used his powers to melt his way through.
* ThirdEye: Pudding has a third eye that she hid with bangs for a good portion of the arc until her EvilAllAlong moment. It's later revealed in Chapter 853 that her father comes from the Three-Eye tribe, a race of people whose third eye allows them to read poneglyphs. Big Mom hopes Pudding will awaken this power in time so she can go to Raftel, though Pudding points out as a HalfHumanHybrid, it is very unlikely.
* ThisIsSomethingHesGotToDoHimself: After Pedro's HeroicSacrifice, Luffy decides to take on Katakuri by himself in the Mirror World while he leaves the Straw Hats to escape Big Mom's armies. He eventually succeeds, but not without severe injury.
* ThisIsUnforgivable: Nami is ''[[TranquilFury mad as hell]]'' at Sanji for leading her into the depths of fear with his faked betrayal, and says she will never forgive him for what he did. She emotionally wounded him in retaliation for what he did to her, likely knowing that would hurt a ''lot'' worse than anything anybody could say or do, especially coming from someone he admires so much.
* ThreateningShark: Subverted with Praline, who is a half-hammerhead shark mermaid, yet is a good person HappilyMarried to Aladdin of the Sun Pirates. She'll choose her husband over her mother when push comes to shove. She helps tend to Pekoms's wounds after he is found by Jimbei and brought to the Sun Pirates to recover, and she distracts Big Mom's sea slug scouts by singing to them to help the Straw Hats escape Totto Land undetected.
* ThrowTheBookAtThem: Big Mom's 19th son Charlotte Mont-d'Or has the power to create books and trap people in illusions by hovering his books over them. It's also where his epithet, "The Scribe" comes from.
* TokenGoodTeammate:
** Deconstructed with Reiju. Despite her ties to the Vinsmokes as the eldest biological daughter and child, she's actually a very nice person, a trait she shares with [[WhiteSheep Sanji]] and [[MissingMom Sora]]. But the Vinsmokes' extremely low opinion on empathy and kindness made Reiju keep [[StepfordSmiler smiling]] and act snooty because she is ''terrified'' for her own life. Because of this, most of her good deeds are done away from in view of her family, such as sucking out a deadly poison from Luffy's body, tending to Sanji's wounds when they were kids, and put explosive bracelet duds on Sanji's hands. And while she laughed at Sanji for showing kindness, she's actually very proud of Sanji for doing so, because she sees it at proof that the sacrifice her dead mother, Sora, made to save her brothers from Judge had not been in vain. Her constant pretending to support her family's actions and behavior left her with such deep self-loathing that she wishes for herself and her family to die, seeing the Vinsmoke name as a plague for the world and seeing her own death as the only way to atone for her sins. Fortunately, when the opportunity does come, she is saved from death's door by Sanji, [[LaserGuidedKarma who returned the favor to her for all those years helping him out in private]].
** In the Charlotte family, there's Moscato, who was a ReasonableAuthorityFigure despite working for Big Mom as a Minister. Sisters Charlotte Chiffon and Charlotte Praline don't have the same loyalty to their mother however -- Praline is in on the Sun Pirates' betrayal and joins them, too, despite knowing the consequences; and Chiffon supports her husband Bege's assassination plan, and would rather see her mother dead.
* TookALevelInBadass: Flashbacks reveal that Sanji was physically the weakest of the Vinsmoke children, due to being the only one who didn't have genetic enhancements thanks to his mother, Sora, sacrificing herself to ensure her quadruplet sons stayed normal. Save for Reiju, his family used Sanji's weakness as yet another reason to bully him, a "disgrace" to their family. In the present day, Sanji curb-stomps Yonji, rearranging his face to such an extent that the doctors have to use a ''press machine'' to get it back to normal, and was able to fight evenly with his father until the latter started getting serious and pragmatic. Reiju was legitimately impressed with how strong he's gotten, having a hard time believing that her weak little brother, whom she (secretly) lovingly cared for and dressed up his wounds whenever he came to her after beaten up by his brothers, had become a "beast".
* TragicKeepsake: As of Chapter 865, the photo of Mother Carmel is revealed to be this to Big Mom, who turns out to be a ParentalSubstitute who raised her in an OrphanageOfLove. Because of this positive upbringing, Big Mom keeps Mother Carmel's photo as it is likely the only reminder Big Mom has left of her. For that reason, even asking about the photo is a BerserkButton, and when Luffy succeeds in showing Big Mom Mother Carmel's broken photo frame, Big Mom reaches her RageBreakingPoint and unleashes an ''epic'' VillainousBreakdown... which was what Bege had planned.
* TragicVillain:
** As monstrous they may be, Vinsmoke Ichiji, Niji, and Yonji were literally robbed of all chances to become good people when [[AbusiveParents Judge]] decided to remove both their ability to feel and understand positive emotions in utero, permanently and irrevocably inhibiting their moral growth as they grew up. Judge's incredibly lax parenting only made their behavior worse as adults.
** Pudding's ''horrific'' childhood, which all revolved around her supposedly "freaky" ThirdEye, led her to believe that she is truly the monster as everyone claimed her to be, which created a monstrous {{Jerkass}} and ConsummateLiar who hides her sadistic insanity with a mask of adorable sweetness.
** Big Mom of all people turns out be this. First she was abandoned by her birth parents on Elbaf when she got too much to look after, then Mother Carmel and her fellow orphans, who all accepted her, flaws and all, disappeared during her sixth birthday. When Luffy shows her the fractured remnants of Mother Carmel's portrait, Big Mom breaks down and is reduced to crying and acting like a scared, abandoned child, wondering why Mother Carmel up and left her. And nobody acted as a moral compass to her, making her genuinely good idea of making a "Wonderland" becoming extremely twisted and dangerous. ''Then'' there's the fact that Big Mom still continued to regard Mother Carmel highly and follow her pacifistic utopian teachings in the present day... completely unaware that her once-mother figure actually did not care for her or the other orphans at all, and only saw them as cargo to sell to the World Government. Take away Big Mom's gigantic size, Devil Fruit powers, and her strength, and all you have is a mentally ill woman who was used by others for a great majority of her life and kept clinging to platitudes that were based on complete lies.
** Most of Big Mom's own children count as this, too, once the implications sink in. They were left wanting for nothing, and have a lot of privileges by being royalty, but being raised in a household of dysfunction inevitably left them as psychologically messed up as their mother. Only a few managed to grow up relatively adjusted (Moscato, Praline, Lola and Chiffon), but compared to the rest, it's a rather dim situation.
** Katakuri is one of his family's deadliest warriors, and is constantly praised and admired for being the shining example of what a Charlotte family member ''should'' be. [[BrokenAce However]], what everyone sees is a public facade; he used to be a happy-go-lucky kid who beat up anyone who bullied him for having a fanged mouth like a "pelican eel, only to deeply regret it when his bullies attacked and scarred his sister Brulee out of spite. Katakuri feels so ashamed about it that he tries hiding everything he sees as "flawed" about himself so he wouldn't be humiliated again... except it's incredibly stressful to keep up his public facade and he almost has no room to breathe, save for his "snack times". He was even willing to murder people so his secrets wouldn't get out.
* TransformationIsAFreeAction:
** Defied by Pedro, who, rather than allow Tamago to undergo his final transformation into his strongest form, ended the fight with a load of dynamite while he was mid-transforming. Tamago's troops tried to stop him and allow Tamago to transform, but to no avail. Tamago [[YouCantThwartStageOne still survived and finished transforming]], though after Pedro bailed out of the fight.
** Also defied by Katakuri, who was actually smart enough to not just stand around and watch as Luffy inflated himself to activate Gear Fourth.
** Defied again when Pekoms attempts to activate his Su Long transformation. All of Big Mom's troops immediately dogpile him, and attempt an EyeScream on him so that he can't see the moon to complete it.
* TraumaCongaLine: Sanji is '''put through the ringer''' in this arc:
** Carrying over from the Zou arc, he was forced to allow himself to be kidnapped for the safety of his friends and loved ones, and then forced to reunite with his hated, cruel family, which dredges up many painful memories of his horrible, abusive childhood with them, and how he ''ran away from home'' to escape from that.
** He is then repeatedly coerced further into going through with the marriage and not making trouble: first with handcuffs that will explode and blow his hands off if he tries to escape the island; then, with his father threatening to have his beloved father-figure Zeff murdered if Sanji doesn't cooperate; and then, with his brothers using this to keep him from fighting back against him, causing him to get the crap beaten out of him once more by all three of them, just as they did when they were kids.
** Not long after, Sanji encounters his captain, Luffy, and longtime object of his affections, Nami, who have come to rescue him. He's not only forced to refuse them and insult them to try to get them to leave, but when that doesn't work, he actually beats the crap out of Luffy to convince his family that he's truly left the Straw Hats... only for Luffy to ''still'' refuse to believe him and express his faith in him. Sanji actually ''breaks down in tears'' afterwards, and later ends up begging Big Mom to spare his crew and let them go in exchange for his full cooperation.
** After all of this, the poor guy ''still'' tries to keep his spirits up and decides to make the most of his forced situation and try to have a happy life with Pudding, agreeing to marry her and calling her the only ray of hope he has left. Unfortunately for Sanji, when he goes to visit her, he finds that not only has Pudding injured and kidnapped his sister, but she's gloating to her about how her NiceGirl personality was a total act, that she was manipulating "that idiot" Sanji the whole time, and that she plans to assassinate him at their wedding the next day while the rest of her family murders the rest of Sanji's and Reiju's. After Sanji hears her say all of this, he looks like he's taken a flying leap past the DespairEventHorizon.
** When he tells Reiju the truth of what happened (her memory having been altered by Pudding) she believes him... and proceeds to tell Sanji what Judge had done to him and his brothers (weaponizing them in utero) and how their mother died, which got Sanji thinking ''he'' was responsible for Sora's death, when it was actually not. Reiju then begs Sanji to abandon her to their family's fate and go be free with the Straw Hats, which Sanji is clearly unhappy with, as Reiju is the only member of his biological family that he cares about. And after she convinces him to free himself, meet his crew again and worry about other things later, he still thinks that he's gone too far into the mess to turn back.
* TroublingUnchildlikeBehavior: One of Big Mom's younger children, Anana [[EstablishingCharacterMoment establishes herself]] as one of Big Mom's more disturbed kids in her first appearance by complaining to Big Mom that the head chef won't let her borrow his knives which the little girl intended to use to mutilate her stuffed animal. Rather than reprimand Anana, Big Mom asks two other children of hers, Dolce and Dragee, to fetch the knives for their sister. To this, the two little boys remark that every time they give Anana knives, she manages to pop their balloons. One other sibling at that moment also asks Big Mom to stop encouraging Anana's psychotic behavior and another disturbingly threatens to kill Anana one day for being so rotten to the core.
* {{Troperiffic}}: You remember how Dressrosa Arc was lauded for having ''too many tropes'' in a single page? Well, as you can see in the above format, Totland Arc is divided into '''seven pages''' worth of entries, while being ''three-fourths'' of Dressrosa Arc.
* TwinSwitch: After Lola ran away to find her own husband instead of marrying Prince Loki, Big Mom put her twin sister, Chiffon, in her place, hoping no one would notice. But when the switch was discovered, it made things worse between Big Mom and the Giants.
* {{Tykebomb}}: Deconstructed and played for drama with the Vinsmoke children. Even before they were born, all of them were planned by Judge to be perfect weapons and exemplary Germa commanders who will conquer North Blue and lead their kingdom to greatness. To achieve this, he modified his children on a genetic level, enhancing their strengths and removing their ability to display and understand empathy. However, Judge's experiments only broke his family and made it dysfunctional. Because of the enhancements they received in utero, Ichiji, Niji, and Yonji became utter brats as adults, literally unable to comprehend the cruelty of their actions, and robbed of all chances to become good people. Their older sister, Reiju, has enough empathy to understand the extent of her family's depravity, yet she cannot act both out of fear of being abused, and being psychologically altered to always follow her father's orders. She also hates herself so much that she thinks her only option is to die. Sanji is the only one who escaped his siblings' fate thanks to his mother's sacrifice, but in a household that forbids compassion and virtue of any kind, he ended up being the sole target of bullying and hate. And Sora, the mother of the Vinsmoke children, died because she was desperate enough to sacrifice herself for the sake of said children and preserve their humanity. The final kicker is that even with their technology, gene-altering experiments, and "perfect" warriors, it's still not enough by New World standards, and this handicap, combined with the lack of empathy that resulted from Judge's experiments, nearly resulted in the Vinsmoke dynasty becoming extinct.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:U]]
* TheUglyGuysHotDaughter:
** Most of [[{{Gonk}} Big Mom]]'s younger children are very attractive or at least decent-looking. Pudding in particular looks ''nothing'' like her despite being one of her daughters. It's double-subverted with Cracker, who's a {{Gonk}} like his mother... when he dons his Biscuit Soldier armor. His real face, while not really pretty, it's also not outright Gonk either. Subverted with some of Big Mom's children such as Chiffon and her sister Lola, Brulee, Perospero, and Opera.
** Meanwhile with the Vinsmokes, the brutish Judge looks ''nothing'' like his children, who are all gorgeous-looking. His daughter Reiju in particular is a slightly fierce-looking replica of his deceased wife (sans the curly eyebrows).
* UglyGuyHotWife: Played straight with Judge, who's very large and brutish-looking compared to his frail, gorgeous deceased wife. Subverted with Capone Bege and his {{Gonk}} wife Chiffon, and Big Mom and one of her ex-husbands Pound (who are both ugly).
* UncertainDoom:
** In chapter 828. Pekoms suddenly went missing when the Straw Hats went back to the ''Thousand Sunny'', leaving only a message: "Turn back". They all note that something seriously bad must've happened to him and they may be in danger... which [[ChallengeSeeker only serves to get Luffy more driven to go forward.]] Chapter 834 shows him being alive, but then he's shot by Bege to the shark-infested ocean, playing this trope again. Later in Chapter 859, we're shown that the Sun Pirates had rescued him and put him into their custody.
** The fate of Mother Carmel and the children during Big Mom's sixth birthday party. During the party, they gave her a giant stack of croquembouche as her birthday cake which made her so happy that she cried TearsOfJoy that blinded her. The next panel shows the island that they were living on and [[DistantReactionShot what sounds like screaming coming from the island]]. She was so focused on eating that she [[ExtremeOmnivore chomped down on the table several times and by the time she finishes the croquembouche, the table and the logs being used as chairs are gone]] and everyone has vanished. The remains of Mother Carmel's clothing can be seen on the ground. [[ImAHumanitarian Did Big Mom eat them all by accident]], did someone or something take them away, or did they just abandon her while she was eating? Chapter 868 revealed there were two witnesses who saw the whole thing and their reactions pretty much confirm that Mother Carmel and the children were definitely eaten by Big Mom.
** After Luffy beats Katakuri, Pekoms comes to get him out. Hoping to use Brulee as a hostage to make their way through Big Mom Pirates and using his Silong form to rampage enough to cause a distraction for Luffy to escape Cacoa Island. However he's quickly knocked down and last heard about to have his eyes gouged out to prevent him from transforming. We never see what became of him.
** 902 ends with the Sun Pirates and the Germa 66 about to make their escape after hearing the Straw Hats are out of Big Mom's territory. But Big Mom, back to her senses after eating the wedding cake Saniji, Pudding and Chiffon made, arrives on the scene. What happens afterward is not shown.
* UnderestimatingBadassery:
** Sanji's family, save for Reiju, never thought much of him because of how weak he was in childhood. Hence, they're surprised at how strong he is now -- along with how unwilling he is to take their crap anymore. Part of the reason why the Vinsmokes blackmailed him into complacence is to protect themselves from a righteous beatdown. By the end of the arc, while Judge is still in denial over his weakling son being stronger, Sanji's siblings acknowledge him as part of the family because of his strength, with Niji giving Sanji his own raid suit.
** One for the heroes' side. During the fight with Brulee, Chopper admits to Nami that they completely underestimated the power of a Pirate Emperor and will need re-think their approach after they regroup. Indeed, a chapter later, Nami reflects on Chopper's words upon seeing Luffy having trouble against one of Big Mom's sons. Considering Luffy had to go Gear Fourth just to stand a chance definitely says something.
** Also a traditional example with Cracker and Brûlée towards not only the Straw Hats, but Urouge. While Brûlée is making her BreakingSpeech to the Straw Hats about how the Big Mom Pirates managed to defeat three of the Worst Generation without them ever seeing Big Mom, she said that Urouge managed to defeat one of the Sweet Commanders, but was forced out by Cracker, and she assumes that he died in the Seducing Woods. The readers know that Urouge is actually alive. Also, a few short chapters and some outside-the-box thinking on the part of Luffy and Nami later, Cracker and Brûlée have both been defeated (the latter being defeated again later on by Chopper and Carrot due to falling for a hidden plan that they had set up for her).
** After seeing the incredibly large army Big Mom sent out to deal with Luffy for defeating her son Cracker, Niji comments that [[NobodysThatDumb an idiot wouldn't confront a threat this big]]. Sure enough, [[WhoWouldBeStupidEnough Luffy is later shown doing the exact same thing]].
** Pekoms warns Bege that underestimating Big Mom would be a mistake, but Bege shrugs it off. Turns out that Pekoms was correct. Despite Bege's clever planning and careful thinking, his assassination attempt of Big Mom fails due to Big Mom managing to destroy his missile launchers before they can hit her, by her sheer scream.
** Tamago warns Mont D' Or that the Straw Hats and their allies aren't to be taken lightly after they wreck the wedding, stating just because Big Mom Pirates are powerful doesn't mean they can afford to get arrogant. Indeed, when Mont receives a call from what he thinks is one of his siblings who claim they've taken out the Germa 66, he starts gloating they never stood a chance. In reality, the Germa defeated ''all'' their solders that came after them with Niji disguising his voice and faking the report.
** Charlotte Flampe finds Luffy pathetic as she watches the fight between Katakuri and him and seeing the latter bruised heavily from all the hits he's taken. Oh, if she only knew the scraps Luffy got in before reaching this point. To exemplify this, she sees Luffy getting back up as laughable after hitting him with a blowdart that impaired his movements. Katakuri himself was utterly pissed when he found out since he wanted to beat Luffy on his own terms and not with her help, meaning he respected Luffy as the tough fighter he was, so much so that he literally wounded himself in the same spot he struck Luffy as penance. What's more when Luffy and Katakuri unleashed their Conqueror's Haki across the area, knocking everyone out, Flampe was shocked that Luffy had it too.
** Charlotte Brownie, upon seeing that the bulk of the Big Mom's forces had been mobilized against a group of less than ten people, decided to take a nap. This leads to his brothers and sisters getting decimated when the Vinsmokes show up with their Germa forces.
* UndyingLoyalty:
** In a disturbing manner, the Germa soldiers are so loyal to the Vinsmokes that when one of them says "Wall", they don't hesitate to use themselves as a HumanShield and allow their leaders to ''launch an attack right through them!''
** This also counts for anyone who works for the Vinsmokes as well, including the servants who look after the castle and the scientists who work on creating Germa soldier clones. Unfortunately, the Vinsmokes (save [[WhiteSheep Sanji]], [[TokenGoodTeammate Reiju]], and their [[MissingMom deceased mother]]) are really [[BadBoss shitty people]] who see displaying kindness to their workers as beneath royalty, so the servants just have to [[StepfordSmiler grin and bear it]] whenever one of them mistreats them. Case in point: when Sanji defends Cosette, an adorable cook, from his abusive brother Niji and compliments her cooking, Cosette's response is to blush and cry in gratitude.
* TheUnfavorite: Played with. Sanji was viciously bullied by his quadruplet brothers and mistreated by his father because he was a "dud" -- he was no stronger than a normal kid, and he continued to show kindness when he should have none. On the other hand, his mother Sora loved him; because he was the only one to retain his empathy after Sora took a gene surgery-reversing drug to preserve her then-unborn quadruplet sons' humanity, she saw Sanji as her biggest accomplishment. Sanji's sister Reiju loves him just as much, but could only show it in secret for fear of being abused as well.
* UnspokenPlanGuarantee: The corollary version. Chapter 859 is dedicated to Bege's assassination plan being discussed and outlined. We are also given potential ways for it to go wrong over the next few chapters -- Charlotte Brûlée, an unwilling accomplice to the plan, wants to somehow warn Big Mom about it; one of the Sweet Commanders, Charlotte Katakuri, can see into the near future with his Observation Haki; the Straw Hats hadn't gotten much sleep since their arrival on Whole Cake Island, and Sanji can't control his attraction to Pudding despite now knowing her true nature. Oh, and the fact that there are homies all around; although he took care of one, there's no telling about the others... He at least managed to go at the stage where he has Big Mom at his mercy, but when it's time for him to actually finish the job, Big Mom not only destroys the poisonous projectiles meant to kill her, but also shatter their escape mirror, leaving Bege with no choice but to battle the Big Mom Pirates with his alliance and Devil Fruit abilities.
* UnstoppableRage: After Big Mom recovers from her breakdown caused by the destruction of Mother Carmel's photo, she goes absolutely ballistic and starts attacking the immobilized Big Father (Bege) in a fury.
* UnusuallyUninterestingSight: Inverted. Nami's shocked to see a talking alligator. ''Luffy'' of all people points out that she really shouldn't be surprised by something like that at this point and reminds her that Chopper (a humanoid reindeer) and Carrot (a bunny mink) are with them.
* UnwillingSuspension: In Chapter 847, Brulee has Carrot hanging by rope over a heated cauldron as she prepares to cook and feed the Mink to some hungry Homies. Chapter 849, however, shows that "Carrot" is actually a frog that Brulee accidentally transforms into, and the real Carrot then proceeds to kick her and her group's asses.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: Vinsmoke Sora's attempted gambit to save her quadruplet sons from becoming their father's weapons led to Sanji being horrifically bullied and abused by his father and brothers for being a weak waste of space. Tragically, she never lived long enough to see it.
* UnwittingPawn: As revealed in Ch. 850, Big Mom and Pudding has been playing Sanji and the Vinsmoke Family for kicks, as the alliance plan was a lie and they intend to massacre the family and take their technology for themselves. By the time the Vinsmokes find out, it's almost too late, but luckily, [[BigDamnHeroes the Straw Hats walked in]].
* UsedToBeASweetKid:
** Pudding, tragically so. Years of childhood bullying and abuse from almost everyone in Totto Land, even [[AbusiveParents her own mother]], for having a ThirdEye, caused her to completely snap, BrokenTears and SlasherSmile included.
** Big Mom herself was one, being a CheerfulChild who had no idea how to control her own strength and had terrible hunger pangs that she couldn't quite control. Her two parental figures' extremely lax raising methods further enabled her worst traits, much like how Doflamino was raised by his Executives, and turned her into a fickle, gluttonous monster with little to no self-control.
** Sanji was a much kinder, if still dirty-minded, kid who loved to cook and spending time with his mother and sister. But the constant physical and psychological abuse he received from his father and brothers, combined with nearly starving to death once, and living under Zeff's stiff hand, hardened him. He's still compassionate, but it's now mixed with his [[HotBlooded abrasiveness]] and [[SirSwearsALot foul mouth]].
** Katakuri was much like Luffy, stuffing his face with donuts and beating up anyone who bullied him for having a fanged mouth. After one of his sisters paid the price for his recklessness, Katakuri became so guilt-ridden that he suppressed ''everything'' he perceived as a flaw, and eventually became the most powerful Charlotte after Big Mom herself.

* VicariouslyAmbitious: Implied to be the reason why Judge experimented on all his children and caused so much dysfunction in his family. Judge conquered North Blue in the past, then lost the territory. So he altered his children's Lineage Factors so they would become strong, merciless warriors that would reconquer North Blue and lead Germa 66 to greatness. This led to Reiju becoming severely suicidal as an adult, and Yonji, Ichiji, and Niji literally being unable to understand positive human emotions or the depravity of their actions. Only Sanji escaped his siblings' fate thanks to his mother, and he suffered for it.
* VictoryByEndurance:
** In the final stages of his battle with Cracker, Luffy adopted the strategy of eating Cracker's Biscuit Soldiers to keep up his strength while depleting Cracker's stamina.
** Likewise Luffy's victory against Katakuri was due to this in which he had to weather Katakuri's attacks for 12.5 grueling hours, barely able to retaliate for the most part and, at one point, struck with a numbing agent which caused him to take a very hefty blow to the side. After the two decide to just go all out against each other and both subsequently collapse after their final blows, they get to their feet after ten minutes, with Katakuri going back down and staying down, unable to continue.
* VillainBall: Perospero completely wasted the opportunity to kill the Vinsmokes with his EvilGloating. He already encased the Vinsmokes in his candy but he and the others don't immediately shoot them because he uses this moment to mock Judge. When Katakuri tells Perospero to hurry up, he brushes him off and continues his gloating. This wasted time gave Luffy the opportunity to show Big Mom the portrait of Mother Carmel, causing her to scream which incapacitates everyone not wearing ear plugs which prevents them from killing the Vinsmokes and allows the Straw Hats to rescue them.
* VillainRespect: Over the course of their duel, Luffy's tenacity and combative instincts gradually impress Katakuri to the point that it even inspires ''CharacterDevelopment'' in him. By the last leg of their fight, Luffy has become such a WorthyOpponent to him that he actively encourages Luffy to exceed his current limits and won't settle for fighting anything less than fighting Luffy at his absolute strongest.
* VillainSong: Episode 786 has "Bloody Party", a cheerfully evil song by Big Mom and her crew about how they get the ingredients for their tea party by murder and robbery.
* VillainousBreakdown:
** After the Straw Hat Pirates crashes the wedding by destroying the wedding cake and Brook destroying the portrait of Mother Carmel, Big Mom is so mad that she's confused about what to be more mad at and just stands there shocked. What causes her to reach her final RageBreakingPoint is when Luffy shows her the broken portrait, making her unleash an unholy scream that incapacitates those without ear protection around her, and causes her to break down in tears.
** Judge loses it when he finally learns that Big Mom was planning to kill them from the start and never intended to ally with Germa 66. Because his sons lack emotions, they don't even care that they're going to die and they just laugh it off, with Ichiji calling him "pathetic". Judge actually breaks down in tears and [[VillainsWantMercy begged for mercy.]]
* VillainousLegacy:
** Played with. Mother Carmel unintentionally started one with Big Mom when she took her in and enabled her bad habits as a "natural born killer" so that way she could have one final, hefty payday when she inevitably sold her to the government. Unfortunately, she died before that could come to fruition, and her status as a slave trader was never made public, so no one knew of her villainy. However, her ''lies'' live on, as Big Mom never knew the truth about her and made it her personal goal to fulfill Carmel's "ideals" after she "disappeared". Alas, she fell under the care of Streusen, who enabled her even ''more'', and thus that dream was further twisted by her selfishness and insanity, and eventually, cruelty. End result? A pirate Emperor that has wreaked havoc across the world for over ''sixty years'', who is desperately trying to fulfill a dream that was based on falsehoods.
* VillainousLineage: Played with. While most of Big Mom's children like Brulee, Perospero, and Cracker have inherited her penchant for bloodshed and insanity, a few like Moscato, Praline, Chiffon, and Lola avert it by being completely benevolent people. Pudding is a double-subversion as she only became the way she is now by being subjected to years of cruel abuse and bullying as a child for being three-eyed, with no one to turn to for help.
* VillainousRescue:
** In Chapter 869, the Vinsmoke children, after being freed by Sanji, regain their raid suits and attack the Charlotte family/Big Mom Pirates to save the Straw Hats from being captured and buy everyone time to escape into Bege's fortress.
** In Chapter 897, the Vinsmoke children do it again by blowing up Cacao Island's ports with the Germa fleet, then beating up most of Oven's army who had Sanji and Luffy completely surrounded. Ichiji claims they're only helping out because they wanted to shake things up.
* VillainsWantMercy: Judge shows off his hypocrisy when he desperately begs for mercy when he realizes Big Mom's intentions to assassinate him and his family. Everyone, from his own children, to Big Mom's family/crew and the tea party attendees, take turns in ridiculing him, with Perospero in particular enjoying throwing his own TheSocialDarwinist policies at his face.
* VoiceChangeling: Vinsmoke Niji can mimic other people's voices perfectly, which allowed him to masquerade as Charlotte Nusstorte and trick Mont-d'Or into giving Germa 66 the location of the Straw Hats' rendezvous point on Cacao Island. In the anime, this skill is revealed to be some kind of absorption power that requires physical contact in order to mimic the people he wants.
