Yeah, it's [[RomanticComedy part rom and part com]], but don't forget: it's still part {{zom|bieApocalypse}}.

Spoilers below. Oh, and you've got red on you.

----
* Some of the background events in the day before the official outbreak are really sinister, such as the well-dressed man running away from ''something'' as Shaun buys flowers; the homeless man who grabs a pigeon and ''raises it to his mouth'' -- and then a bus goes by and he vanishes; a woman simply collapsing at a bus stop; and then the couple outside the Winchester who appear to be making out... ''and then the guy's head falls so far backwards that it dangles against his back....''
* Near the end of the film, David is dragged through a window by zombies kicking and screaming, and is gruesomely [[DevouredByTheHorde disemboweled, torn limb from limb, and eaten alive]]. Sure, he's [[AssholeVictim the film's most detestable character]], which makes his demise less unfunny than most others, but the last moments of his life were pure terror, hopelessness, and pain. He died almost instantly upon being paunched, so his suffering was short-lived, but still, what a horrific, embarrassing way to go.
* Poor Dianne had it rough after this scene. She tried to fight her way through the undead horde using David's leg as a bat to save him, only to realize it was far too late and her only chance of survival was to climb into a tree where she spent several days with only David's leg as sustenance.
* Early in the movie, Ed and Shaun are driving down a road, and you briefly see a family trying to get away from their zombie mother, who drags the son back inside the house.
* Shaun realizing he's just blown the group's cover after getting in an argument with Ed who was answering his cell phone ''in the middle of a zombie horde''.
* The lights being switched on in the back room of the Winchester. We're expecting, when Shaun goes into a dark room alone, that he'll be attacked by a stray zombie trapped in there. We don't expect that when he switches on the lights there are ''dozens and dozens of gore-smeared zombies pawing at the backdoor's window moaning and groaning.'' His knee-jerk reaction of turning off the lights and pulling down the shade somehow makes it worse, because now they're out of sight but ''definitely'' not out of mind. When Shaun is about to leave, another door in the room starts to shake. During the "Don't Stop Me Now" scene, David runs into that zombie when trying to switch off the fuses.
** What's worse is that Shaun unintentionally led them back to the Winchester. He thought he gave them the slip by hiding in a rubbish bin, but one zombie spotted him running off.
* Philip's [[JumpScare sudden zombification]].
-->'''Shaun:''' Mum, he's dead!
-->'''Barbara:''' No, he isn't.
-->'''Shaun:''' [[OhCrap GET OUT! GET OUT!]]
* The moment when the undead, one-armed groom shuffles silently into the house. Shaun and Ed are engrossed in the television which is showing a News Report on the unfolding events; [[MeaningfulBackgroundEvent in the background, the front door is slowly pushed open and a dark indistinct]] ''[[MeaningfulBackgroundEvent something]]'' [[MeaningfulBackgroundEvent stumbles forward just out of shot]]. The news report then reminds everyone to keep all windows locked and barricaded. As Shaun and Ed slowly look at each other with horrifying sense of realization, a shadow crosses the living room wall behind them...
* The revealing of Pete's zombification. At the beginning of the film, as Shaun is getting ready to go to work, he snaps shut the mirrored cabined on the bathroom wall to reveal the reflection of an irritated-looking Pete moaning about the door being left open overnight. The next day, as Shaun is steeling himself in the bathroom, he snaps the cabinet shut again -- but instead of a perfectly-alive-if-not-somewhat-pissed-off Pete reflected behind him, there's the dark, silent shadow of a man standing perfectly still on the other side of the shower curtain.
** It's worse when you remember Ed's unintentional prediction from the night before... "The next time I see him (Pete), he's dead!"
** [[{{Determinator}} Pete managed to get through the entire horde of zombies surrounding the Winchester in order to bite Ed.]]
* Some of the unnamed zombies wandering around outside the Winchester are utterly terrifying if looked at closely. A special mention goes out to the identical twin zombies; identical twins can sometimes be unsettling in their own right, but the blood-stained, blank-eyed bodies of two fairly large and completely indistinguishable men lurching around just sends shivers down your spine. Furthermore, when the group pass them in their bid to reach the Winchester, a garbled scare chord plays, which only exacerbates things.
* The events around Shaun's mum. There's the bit where you see her arm with a gaping hole in it, Shaun having to rush away from zombies invading their safehouse to watch his mum die, convulsing as she does. The off-screen rifle-cocking sound just afterwards, with one of his "friends" pointing a rifle (rightly, but tactlessly) at her. And then being handed a gun and told to shoot your own mother, and the effect when her face changes just before he does.
* The part where Mary falls down onto the umbrella stand, complete with blood splatter. And then she manages to lever herself up off the stand, with much snapping and squelching, and as she stands up we're shown the lovely hole going right through her body. ''Uuuuuugh.''
* The last few minutes as we realize one of the survivors has gone around the deep end.
* Shaun seeing a horde of zombies devouring one of the regulars from the Winchester, the man with the snakeskin boots. It's how he realizes they're on the right track to the pub.
* When the group restores power to the pub, they start trying to get something on the TV to lift their spirits. Every channel simply shows a title card with [[ZombieApocalypse "Stand By For Further Information"]] while [[DroneOfDread a dead tone sounds in the background]]. Perhaps one of the biggest DespairEventHorizon moments in the film, since it appears that society has completely collapsed worldwide.
* While Shaun and Ed are driving to collect Barbara and deal with Phillip, they pass an abandoned ambulance with both rear doors open and a bodybag strapped to a stretcher that's directly the vehicle. Only...the bodybag is moving. Not just moving but practically ''convulsing'' as the body inside is clearly attempting to claw its way out. It's a very brief shot (less than five seconds long) but it's still very disturbing; it even audibly freaked out both Bill Nighy and Penelope Wilton on their commentary track.
* In a way, the fact that it even takes as long as it does for anyone to even ''notice'' what's going on - it's heavily implied via the background newspapers and TV reports that this whole thing has been building for several days at least before the problem clearly becomes too widespread to ignore or downplay. The day before everything kicks off, Shaun is surrounded by increasing evidence that something is very much not okay but absolutely ''no one'', Shaun least of all, appears to take any notice. While the lack of comprehension that the characters are dealing with a ZombieApocalypse is used primarily for comedy, the implications it raises are pretty damn horrifying when you stop and think about them.
