* This [[https://jovemnerd.com.br/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/poseidon-1-760x307.jpg shot of King Atlan]] looks like an [[https://static.comicvine.com/uploads/original/8/82914/3262432-4277828774-28597.png almost exact recreation]] of Aquaman's SignatureScene from the ComicBook/New52 ''Justice League'' comics.
* Thomas Curry keeps a pet dog, a golden retriever. In the comics, Arthur and Mera adopted a golden retriever whom they dubbed "Aquadog".
* Just before the first duel between Arthur and Orm, an octopus plays a drum solo. According to James Wan, this octopus is Topo, Aquaman's octopus sidekick from the 1950s-1960s.
* David Kane's first Manta helmet is based on the Silver Age Black Manta helmet, which was a conventional helmet with breathing apparatus connected.
* Kane's also got a cool manta-shaped submarine they'd stolen from a research facility. The Manta Sub came from the comics and was also regularly featured in animation.
* In an episode of the ''WesternAnimation/JusticeLeague'' cartoon, Orm also hired a mercenary from the surface world -- ComicBook/{{Deadshot}} in this case -- and paid him with gold doubloons.
** In that same series, Black Manta - referred to there as "Devil Ray" because of [[ScrewedByTheLawyers rights issues]] - was portrayed by Michael Beach. Here, [[CastingGag Beach plays Black Manta's father.]]
* The shot of Arthur peering from behind the prongs of Atlan's trident after retrieving it looks to be a [[https://66.media.tumblr.com/2af19b2a620e6fdd85bcb4c8bb8d014e/tumblr_ov2btepMGx1trp40so1_1280.jpg direct lift of this Stjepan Sejic comic cover]].
* During the climatic battle Aquaman takes the reins of a giant seahorse, like he did in the original 1940s comics and the 60's Filmation series.
* Aquaman's control/communication with fish has visual and auditory similarity to the versions from ''Superfriends'' and even [[Creator/{{Filmation}} earlier cartoons]].
* Like in ''WesternAnimation/JusticeLeagueThroneOfAtlantis'', Mera was originally betrothed to Orm, but she has no interest in him.
* Mera wears a duster coat during her time in the Sahara and Sicily, just like she briefly wore a trench coat in ''Throne of Atlantis''.
* Aquaman riding the Karathen into war is a nod to this memetic image of [[http://i.imgur.com/orhbCGH.jpg?1 Aquaman riding Cthulhu]], but instead of being played for laughs it's played for awesomeness.
* King Atlan’s trident has Atlantean writing engraved on it. According to James Wan, it reads “Paul & Mort”, referring to Aquaman creators Paul Norris and Mort Weisinger.
* Glimpsed in TheStinger, a gossip article about Aquaman and Wonder Woman might be a reference to the ''WesternAnimation/JusticeLeagueTheFlashpointParadox''.
** In a meta sense, Momoa said he really wants to do a movie with Wonder Woman and Flash next. Fans immediately leaped on this, as Flashpoint's major subplot is a war between Atlantis and the Amazons. The Aquaman film may also have foreshadowed this, as Mera's crown is shown towards the end. It does look like it would match well with Diana's tiara...
** Taking Flashpoint aside, it could also be a reference to the brief ShipTease between them in the pre-New 52 continuity before he and Mera got back together.
* The Hidden Sea is explicitly mentioned to be at the Earth's Core, and has pterodactyls. These heavily imply it to be Skartaris, the setting of ''ComicBook/{{The Warlord|DCComics}}''.
* The unnamed Fishermen Princess-turned-Queen could be an obscure nod to [[https://aquaman.fandom.com/wiki/Vassa Queen Vassa]] from Creator/{{Filmation}} Studios' ''Aquaman'' cartoons. The film now gives a motive to that Queen's unexplained hostility towards Atlantis, which now parallels Black Manta's; both their fathers were killed by the Atlantean king(s). Bonus materials also include the Fishermen using whale-shaped subs, like Vassa in the cartoons.
* King Atlan's gear is what Aquaman himself wore in the ''ComicBook/KingdomCome'' graphic novel.
* Atlantis's origin in the film is of getting submerged underwater due to a cataclysm from an experiment, which caused its inhabitants to develop underwater breathing and culture. This is based on the underwater town of Sub Diego, where Arthur briefly ruled; the town was originally a part of the California shore town San Diego until a failed experiment caused it to sink and force its residents to convert to underwater life.
** The Atlantis underwater bridge that marks its entrance is based on the Californian landmark the Golden Gate, which is a homage to Sub Diego.
