Necronomidol (2014-2022), the ultra-dark idol unit, was created as an example of an ''alt-idol'' group that is DarkerAndEdgier even among other alternative idols, as opposed to the usual IdolSinger tropes. Their initial output consisted in a blend of traditional Japanese folk music and aesthetic with BlackMetal; later on, they began to incorporate other metal genres and other styles such as DarkWave and Synthwave, for a catchier sound that still mantains the general somber attitude. Their imagery is influenced by, other than the aforementioned BlackMetal's visuals, the occult, Japanese and Western horror tropes and (as their name implies) the Franchise/CthulhuMythos.

Interestingly enough, they were self-produced and the unit's founder and producer Ricky Wilson (not the singer from Music/KaiserChiefs) is an American living in Japan, who, as a fan of both idols and horror, wanted to create an idol unit themed around the paranormal: by all accounts, he succeeded. Unusually for a Japanese idol group, they also toured several times in Europe and the US, building a nice following for what is a ''very'' niche product.

In late 2018 the management announced that Sari and Hina Yotsuyu will leave the group to pursue other activities, effective from January 2019. Kunogi Kenbishi and Michelle took their place since then. However, Kunogi had to leave the unit in September 2019 (read the Trivia tab for the reason why). They were also scheduled to perform at the 2020 ''Monster of Dolls'' Japanese idol music festival in Italy but canceled their participation for unknown behind-the-scenes reason, with the manager citing something about the contract they signed. (Sari was a special guest at the 2019 edition, after leaving the unit).

In early 2020 it was announced on Twitter that every member (Risaki, Rei and Michelle) except Himari would leave the group. No reasons were given for the members' departure; it was said that it was caused by an "incident" behind the scenes, but the reason will probably never be known. The management said that they were in the process of recruiting new members, and [[https://twitter.com/NECRONOMIDOL/status/1256206745443028994 the official Twitter]] revealed them, as well as a date of June 2020 for the unit's "rebirth". They are Nana Kamino, Shiki Rukawa and Toda Roa. In the meantime, Risaki, Rei (now known as Ray), together with their old friend Hina and a fourth girl became part of a new unit named [[https://jpop.fandom.com/wiki/MANACLE MANACLE]], with a vaguely similar aesthetic.

However, history repeated itself in 2021: the unit entered a hiatus since April because of Nana's health issues, Shiki's sudden graduation and Toda's commitment to her parallel solo singer-songwriter career. After that hiatus, between '21 and '22 several more members came and went, with the exception of Himari, who however in April 2022 unveiled her solo project [[https://www.isiliel.com/ Isiliel]]. Meanwhile, even more behind the scene [[http://necronomidol.com/news-eng incidents]] caused the management to declare an indefinite hiatus for Necronomidol starting from August 2022.

----
!!Their dark tropes:

* AllLowercaseLetters: Some examples, like the "from chaos born" album or the song "puella tenebrarum".
* AnimatedMusicVideo: Combined with {{Retraux}}. Their [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVacOaFbrdE&feature=youtu.be video for]] ''SKULLS IN THE STARS'' is made to look like a NES-esque game where they are resurrected by some EldritchAbomination to destroy some even worse creatures and prevent the apocalypse. As a fake video game, it has a slew of other tropes on its own.
* ButNotTooForeign: Inverted by their manager, who is American and speaks Japanese as a second language after living there for years.
* DarkMagicalGirl: Taken quite literally at the end of the [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVacOaFbrdE&feature=youtu.be music video]] for "STRANGE AEONS".
* DeliberatelyMonochrome: Several of their early videos were shot in black & white for maximum bleakness.
* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness: As mentioned above, their early singles were much more influenced by Japanese culture, so their stage costumes were inspired by {{miko}} attire; they abandoned this later. Also, in their earliest appearances, Sari didn't always have her iconic green bob wig.
* EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette: Their aesthetic, taken up to eleven with Sari's white face paint. Interestingly, her makeup is ''not'' a reference to black metal's "corpse paint", since she was a ''shironuri'' ("white face") performer well before entering the group.
** All the girls finally wear actual corpse paint in the "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9j7mDS5vn9Y Ritual]]" video.
* GirlishPigtails: Hina's trademark. Roa Toda had them too.
* {{Gorn}}: The professional illustrations on their album and singles sleeves were made by some of the most (in)famous masters of ''ero-guro'' art, such as Creator/ShintaroKago, Waita Uziga and Toshio Maeda (of ''Urotsukidoji'' fame). Some may seem tame, but there are also more nasty variants.
* GratuitousEnglish: Used sparsely in their lyrics. In an amusing variant, the AnimatedMusicVideo mentioned above has the girls speaking Japanese, while the Lovecraftian abomination speaks in (almost) grammatically correct English.
* HalloweenCosplay: [[https://twitter.com/NECRONOMIDOL/status/925386717242068994 This post]] for Halloween 2017, featuring Risaki as [[Film/TheTexasChainsawMassacre Leatherface]], Rei as [[Franchise/ChildsPlay Chucky]], Sari as [[WesternAnimation/TheNightmareBeforeChristmas Sally]] (also a nice PunnyName!), Hina as [[VisualNovel/DanganronpaTriggerHappyHavoc Celestia]] and Himari as a Japanese ghost lady.
* {{Homage}}: To an internet creepypasta/hoax, of all things. The video for "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kBK33DvIoM santa sangre]]" (NSFW) appears to be based on the elusive splatter anime ''WebOriginal/SakiSanobashi'', about a group of schoolgirls finding themselves trapped in a bathroom with no exit, eventually going stir crazy and murdering each other. Not to mention that the song itself is named after an Creator/AlejandroJodorowsky [[Film/SantaSangre movie]], and the bathroom in the video has ''Manga/{{Berserk}}'''s "brand of sacrifice" symbol painted in blood on a wall.
* LighterAndSofter: Part of Sari's output after leaving the group to pursue a solo career, see for example [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3oC0XNUWeao this MV]] that has a completely different, much more colorful, aesthetic.
* LightIsNotGood: The official pics that show the new lineup for 2020 has all the girls dressed in white. It should be noted however that in Japan white, and not black, is the color associated with death.
* LyricalDissonance: For example, ''[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rWKKgzGj_94 psychopomp]]''. It sounds sweet and almost calming, but the lyrics are chilling. Bonus points for the video being shot in the actual "suicide forest", Aokigahara.
* OfficiallyShortenedTitle: Necroma.
* OnlyOneName: Sari is just Sari and always will be. Michelle too, and she also counts as OddNameOut as her stage name is typically Western as opposed to Japanese.
* {{Portmantitle}}: Necronomicon + Idol.
* RevolvingDoorBand: Ever since late 2019 the lineup constantly changed every few months. None of the original founding members remained and, among the others, the only one who managed to last is Himari Tsukishiro.
* SevenIsNana: Nana Kamino uses the word "seven" in her social network addresses.
* ThemeNaming: Several references to the Franchise/CthulhuMythos, from their very name to songs titled "Abhoth", "Ithaqua" (names of creatures from the mythos), the "Strange Aeons" album and so on.
