''Kick Out the Jams'' is the debut [[LiveAlbum live album]] by the Music/{{MC5}}, released in 1969 through Creator/ElektraRecords.

Unusual for a band's first record it's a LiveAlbum, recorded at the Grande in UsefulNotes/{{Detroit}}. In a case of FirstInstallmentWins ''Kick Out the Jams'' is widely seen as one of the greatest live albums of all time. The powerful delivery of the music, along with the equally energetic political messages perfectly fit the time spirit of the late 1960's. At the time ''Kick Out the Jams'' didn't get good reviews, but it quickly became a CultClassic and nowadays it's VindicatedByHistory as one of the essential albums in rock history.

Through MemeticMutation and PopCulturalOsmosis the album title has become more well known than the rest of the record.

!! ''KICK OUT THE TROPES, MOTHERFUCKERS!''

* AlliterativeTitle: "'''R'''amblin' '''R'''ose" and "'''R'''ocket '''R'''educer".
* ArtisticLicenseSpace: "Starship" brings everybody to a better planet where "the sun shines eternally."
* AuthorFilibuster: "Kick Out the Jams" (MOTHERFUCKERS) opens with a long speech by the band's "spiritual advisor" Brother J.C. Crawford before they kick into the first song.
* BeYourself: "Kick Out the Jams"
--> ''Let me be who I am''
--> ''And let me kick out the jams''
* CallToAdventure: The epic introduction of the album, where the audience is whipped into frenzy.
--> ''Brothers and sisters, [[AudienceParticipation I wanna see a sea of hands out there. I want everybody to kick up some noise. I wanna hear some revolution...]] Brothers and sisters, the time has come for each and every one of you to decide whether you are going to be the problem or whether you are going to be the solution! You must choose, brothers, you must choose. It takes five seconds - five seconds of decision, five seconds to realize your purpose here on the planet. It takes five seconds to realize that it's time to move, it's time to get down with it! Brothers, it's time to testify. And I want to know - are you ready to testify? ARE YOU READY?!? I give you a testimonial. [[SingerNamedrop THE MC5]]!''
* DancingIsSeriousBusiness: "Come Together"
--> ''Let us dance the dance''

* DesperatelyLookingForAPurposeInLife:
--> ''It takes five seconds - five seconds of decision, five seconds to realize your purpose here on the planet. It takes five seconds to realize that it's time to move, it's time to get down with it! Brothers, it's time to testify. And I want to know - are you ready to testify? ARE YOU READY?!? I give you a testimonial. [[SingerNamedrop THE MC5]]!''
* DidTheEarthMoveForYouToo: "Come Together"
-->''We hope you all did '''come together'''. ''
* EpicRocking: The 6:04 "Motor City Is Burning" and the 8:15 "Starship".

* HeavyMeta: "Kick Out the Jams"
--> ''The wailin' guitars, girl''
--> ''The crash of the drums''
--> ''Make you want to keep-a-rockin' till the morning comes''

--> ''Let me give tongue to it, yes''
* IWantSong, LimitedLyricsSong and ObsessionSong: "I Want You Right Now", which is basically almost the only line all throughout the song.
* LiveAlbum: This is one of the most powerful rock albums ever recorded live. Their concert in Grande Ballroom on Devil's Night and Halloween 1968 captures the atmosphere of those occasions because the band's label, Creator/ElektraRecords, didn't clean up the chaotic performance that much.
* LongestSongGoesLast: The album closes with the 8:15 "Starship", the only song to crack seven minutes.
* MyCountryTisOfTheeThatISting: "Motor City Is Burning"

* OneWordTitle: "Borderline" and "Starship".
* PoliceBrutality: "Motor City Is Burning" describes policemen as "pigs".
* PrecisionFStrike: One of the most infamous examples in music:
--> ''"Right now, right now, right now, it's time to... [{{Beat}}] ...'''KICK OUT THE JAMS, MOTHERFUCKERS!!!'''" ''
* ProductPlacement: "Ramblin' Rose"
--> ''Diamond rings and a Cadillac car''

--> ''I'd just like to strike a match for freedom myself''
--> ''I may be a white boy, but I can be bad, too''
--> ''Yes, it's true now, yes, it's true now, Yes''
--> ''Let it all burn, let it all burn, let it all burn''
* ShoutOut:

--> ''Robin Tyner's the name and I kick out the jams''
* StepUpToTheMicrophone: Wayne Kramer sings lead vocals on "Ramblin' Rose".
* SurprisinglyGentleSong: You know, for a RatedMForManly balls-out furious proto-punk band, they've got the way-out spacey "Starship".
* TimeMarchesOn: This is very much an album typical of the end of the sixties, when revolution was in the air. "Motor City Is Burning" references UsefulNotes/TheVietnamWar and the Black Panthers.
* TitleTrack: "Kick Out the Jams".
* ThreeChordsAndTheTruth: This album is a cornerstone in both GarageRock and ProtoPunk.
* TwelveBarBlues: "Ramblin' Rose" uses this.
