Return to the main ''Franchise/StarWars'' meme page [[Memes/StarWars here]].

WARNING: '''Spoilers ahead''' for both ''The Last Jedi'' and other ''Star Wars'' media!

''Please add entries in the following format:''
* The meme. [[labelnote:Explanation]]The explanation behind the meme.[[/labelnote]]
** Further mutations and successor memes, if any.
----
* "Subverting Expectations!"[[labelnote:Explanation]]One of the most frequent defenses of the film from critics and supporters was that the multiple plot twists (some of which felt like they [[AssPull came out of nowhere]]) were deliberately done to subvert viewer expectations. Ever since then "subverting expectations" has become a mocking meme brought up whenever a creator tries to justify plot twists in this manner, such as when the ''Series/GameOfThrones'' creators said they had Arya kill the Night King as having Jon do it would be too predictable, or the entire ''[[Anime/GodzillaPlanetOfTheMonsters Godzilla]]'' [[Anime/GodzillaCityOnTheEdgeOfBattle anime]] [[Anime/GodzillaThePlanetEater trilogy]]. It's also frequently used as a general synonym for "disappointment". It's also reclaimed by fans of the film to mock those who claim the movie is subversive, instead positing the film very neatly sits within Star Wars' mythic cycle and that those who paid attention to the story beats of previous entries could follow the logic of the plot.[[/labelnote]]
** "... and that's a good thing!" [[labelnote:Explanation]] This has become a regularly occurring joke on [[Website/FourChan 4chan's]] /tv/ board in response to [[https://www.dailydot.com/parsec/last-jedi-rey-parents-nostalgia-history/ article]] [[https://samlbyers.com/2017/12/23/the-last-jedi-deconstructs-star-wars/ headlines]] defending the film's deconstructionist themes. The joke goes if an article is run about a big-budget franchise film that goes against the anon's beliefs, [[SarcasmMode they follow it up with the aforementioned line]]. [[/labelnote]]
* "[[WesternAnimation/StarWarsRebels Ahsoka]] is the wolf!"[[labelnote:Explanation]]The theatrical trailer for ''The Last Jedi'' revealed a new creature called the vulptex, a crystalline fox-like animal native to Crait, which at the time was believed by fans to be a wolf. Shortly before the movie was released, ''Rebels'' Season 4 introduced wolves linked to the Force, Ahsoka's fate was stated to be addressed in Season 4, and a common but ridiculed theory was that [[{{Animorphism}} Ahsoka was somehow turned into a wolf]] after [[spoiler:being last seen walking away to an unknown fate]] halfway through the show.[[/labelnote]]
* Memes from prior films also gained new life:
** The "Jar-Jar Binks is a Sith Lord" jokes from ''Film/TheForceAwakens'' continued, as fans have apparently [[https://i.imgur.com/UTg4lVH.jpg found Jar-Jar]] hiding in ''The Last Jedi'''s poster.
** Continuing the trend of comparing ''Star Wars'' creatures to Franchise/{{Pokemon}}, porgs and vulptices are now [[VideoGame/PokemonSunAndMoon Rowlet and Alolan Vulpix]].
** From the SNL Undercover Boss starring Adam Driver, there was a joke where Kylo Ren, posing as "Matt the Radar Technician," goes on about [[ButHeSoundsHandsome how he's heard that Kylo Ren has an 8-pack and is shredded]]. It took on new memetic life when TLJ showed Kylo Ren shirtless and revealed that he wasn't kidding.
* "Disney, Creator/{{Sunrise}} just called..."[[labelnote:Explanation]]Upon release of the images of Supreme Leader Snoke's flagship for the movie, Franchise/{{Gundam}} fans [[https://i.redd.it/mwgrfhbpu9jz.jpg have immediately made comparisons]] to the ''[[Anime/MobileSuitGundamWing Peacemillion]],'' thus calling the former an oversized ripoff of the latter.[[/labelnote]]
* Porg memes:
** Jokes about eating porgs.[[labelnote:Explanation]]A leaked image showed Chewbacca appearing to have a white feather in his mouth. Creator/MarkHamill and Creator/AndySerkis both came out to deny that porgs would be eaten, [[spoiler:which turned out to be a lie or extreme case of ExactWords resp. MetaphoricallyTrue, since Chewbacca does indeed kill and roast some porgs, only to relent in actually eating them after several porgs shoot him PuppyDogEyes.]][[/labelnote]]
** The gaping-mouth porg in the trailer has become a popular candidate to photoshop into other pictures, mostly to express shock. Creator/GailSimone has started a trend on twitter of posting song lyrics above the image, as if the Porg were singing.
** There also have been quite a few fanmade pictures where the porgs turned Kylo Ren to the Light Side of The Force through sheer cuteness.
** May the [[{{Pun}} porgs]] be with you.
** Porgis, MixAndMatchCritters made by putting a porg face (often the gaping mouth one from the trailer) onto the body of a corgi. Less common porgis are corgi heads on porg bodies. [[CaptainObvious The name is a combination of the words Porg and Corgi]].
* RAWPOWAH and other jokes about the trailer's repeated use of the phrase "raw power."
* [[Creator/DomhnallGleeson Hux]] gets a [[Franchise/HarryPotter Howler]] [[labelnote:Explanation]]Hux's failed attempt to take a forceful reprimand by Supreme Leader Snoke in his quarters to save face is reminiscent of Howlers in Harry Potter, angry letters from home that berate a hapless student for perceived failures, usually humiliatingly and in public. Of course, Hux is played by Domhnall Gleeson, who also plays Bill Weasley.[[/labelnote]]
* "Skinny guy, kinda pasty." [[labelnote:Explanation]]At the start of the film Poe pranks the First Order by pretending he can't hear Hux over the transmission, and keeps demanding to be put through to Hux, during which he describes Hux as a "skinny guy, kinda pasty". Fans have taken to using it self-deprecatingly as well as to mock the perceived ineffectuality of Hux compared to Kylo Ren.[[/labelnote]]
* "I've seen this raw strength only once before." [[labelnote:Explanation]]Luke notices Rey's power and mentions that he has seen similar strength in Kylo Ren. This has been parodied with Luke referencing other characters such as Jar Jar or other comic relief characters, as well as characters from the Legends continuity have also been periodically seen, such as Kyle Katarn, Revan, and Kyp Durron.[[/labelnote]]
* BB-8's villainous counterpart, BB-9E, is sometimes referred to as "BB-H8" (pronounced "Bee-bee hate") by some fans.
* Sloth-Anakin. [[labelnote:Explanation]]A fake, baffling leak described one of the film's plot points as Rey fighting a sloth-like creature on Ahch-To -- a creature when, once defeated, transformed into the Force spirit of Anakin Skywalker. Fans jokingly referred to these creatures as "Anakins".[[/labelnote]]
* [[Film/GuardiansOfTheGalaxyVol2 "I'm]] Film/MaryPoppins, [[Memes/MarvelCinematicUniverse y'all!"]] [[labelnote:Explanation]]A joke used by detractors of both the film, and people who liked it but found this particular scene to be ridiculous, to describe the scene where [[spoiler:Leia uses the Force to fly through space]].[[/labelnote]]
** Other variants include [[spoiler:"Super-Leia" or "Woman of Steel" due to the way she propels herself like Superman flying, in some cases cut with Music/JohnWilliams' ''Film/{{Supermam|TheMovie}}'' theme]].
** Princess General Leia of [[{{Franchise/Superman}} Krypton]] [[labelnote:Explanation (spoilers)]] Leia's use of the Force to survive in space for a brief time and them fly back into the ship looked like the infamous Superman flying pose.[[/labelnote]]
** [[http://fragglevision.tumblr.com/post/169150845431/martian-prince-carrie-fisher-would-have-enjoyed It's also been mashed up with the Shooting Stars meme.]]
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zya0yW129ss And Led Zeppelin.]]
* Cockblock Luke. [[labelnote:Explanation]]Luke barges in on an intimate moment between [[spoiler:Rey and Kylo Ren, drawing comparisons to things such as an overprotective parent catching his daughter sneaking a boy into her room and the "right in front of my salad?" meme]].[[/labelnote]]
* Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo My Beer. [[labelnote:Explanation (spoilers)]]Amilyn Holdo's spectacular, devastating stunt [[spoiler:with the ''Raddus'']] led to this appropriate pun on her name. "Hold my beer" is a memetic phrase uttered before doing something reckless or dangerous.[[/labelnote]]
* It's salt. [[labelnote:Explanation]] During the Battle of Crait, one soldier briefly tastes the salt on the surface. This has been used to describes some of the fans' reception of the film. "Salty" is a slang term for "bitter" or "upset".[[/labelnote]]
* Did you ever hear the tragedy of Supreme Leader Snoke the [[spoiler:RedHerring]]?[[labelnote:Explanation (spoilers)]]This movie shows that Snoke is nothing more than just a glorified DiscOneFinalBoss, much to the ire of many fans expecting him to be something more. The meme, which originated as a copypasta of Palpatine's monologue about Darth Plagueis the Wise in Episode III, also works as a reference to the popular fan theory that Snoke is the reincarnated Plagueis.[[/labelnote]]
* Snoke's bathrobe/Snoke's smoking jacket [[labelnote:Explanation]]Snoke's menacing cloak is revealed to be golden in color this time. The end effect is that it looks like Snoke didn't care about getting dressed and just put on a bathrobe. It probably didn't help that this particular costuming decision was revealed months before the movie came out via an action figure. [[/labelnote]]
* Force Skype. [[labelnote:Explanation]][[spoiler:Kylo and Rey's talks through their Force Bond]] birthed the comparison to teenage couples Skyping each other. Another name for this meme is "[=ForceTime=]", a pun on Apple's video call app called [=FaceTime=].[[/labelnote]]
* [[Literature/PrideAndPrejudice Pride and Porgs and Prejudice]]. [[labelnote:Explanation]] Fans have taken to calling the film this because of Rey and Kylo's blatant FoeRomanceSubtext - hardly even subtext by the film's close, specifically because Kylo's WeCanRuleTogether speech has drawn comparisons to Mr.Darcy's proposal to Elizabeth Bennet. Other popular comparisons include ''Jane Eyre'' and just about any classic romance[[/labelnote]]
* [[https://youtu.be/eZlw64mI228?t=47s Sad Mark Hamill]] [[labelnote:Explanation]]A vid of Mark Hamill looking completely dejected and depressed during an interview used to mirror [[BrokenHero Luke's state]] in the movie.[[/labelnote]]
* "They RUINED Luke and they RUINED Star Wars!" – [[HistoryRepeats Your Equally Stupid Dad]][[labelnote:Explanation]]With backlash inevitably comes backlash ''to'' the backlash, as demonstrated by [[https://i.imgur.com/n5yxpRQ.png this image]] which pokes fun at the backlash caused by this movie [[HistoryRepeats while pointing out similarities to the post-release fan reception of]] ''Film/TheEmpireStrikesBack''.[[/labelnote]]
* "Impressive. Every word in that sentence was wrong."[[labelnote:Explanation]]When Luke asks Rey what she knows about the force. Rey explains that it's a power that makes things float. Luke then says this quote to her; he also later says this to Kylo Ren during their confrontation.[[/labelnote]]
* [[BestKnownForTheFanservice Ben Swolo]] [[labelnote:Explanation]] When Kylo Ren communicates with Rey, in one scene he is {{shirtless|Scene}}. Some fans expanded the [[https://i.imgur.com/iFbBX40.jpg width of his chest]] to exaggerate his muscular build.[[/labelnote]]
** Do You Know Da Rey? [[labelnote:Explanation]] [[https://me.me/i/ol-do-you-know-de-rey-20309419 Fan art of Ben Swolo]] in the style of [[Franchise/SonicTheHedgeHog Ugandan Knuckles]]. [[/labelnote]]
* There's another one after this? [[labelnote:Explanation]] Some fans pointed out the ending is ''too'' final. [[spoiler: Luke and most of the Resistance are gone]], but it's made pretty clear that they gave enough hope to the rest of the Galaxy that it looks pretty grim for the First Order. While there certainly is room for a sequel, it doesn't look like people will be counting down the days like they did between ''The Force Awakens'' and ''The Last Jedi''. [[/labelnote]]
* Yoda, [[ComicBook/TheMightyThor God of Thunder]]. [[labelnote:Explanation (spoilers)]]When Luke meets the spirit of Yoda when trying to burn down the tree holding the Jedi Texts, Yoda helps out by summoning lightning to burn the tree, which raises [[FridgeLogic all sorts of questions]] if Force Ghosts can interact with the physical world in such a manner.[[/labelnote]]
* "Use the Force to attack the knowledge" [[labelnote: Explanation]]Contrasting Yoda "burning" the Jedi Texts with his words from ''Film/TheEmpireStrikesBack'' of "A Jedi only uses the force for knowledge and defense, not for attack"[[/labelnote]]
* The sacred Jedi texts! [[labelnote:Explanation (spoilers)]]Luke shouts this when Yoda burns the tree containing the sacred Jedi texts. Some people used this quote when having their PornStash or other possessions getting deleted. One particularly famous Tumblr post about it used the line to make fun of throwing out packaging for food with cooking directions on it.[[/labelnote]]
* "I shouldn't have stopped for that haircut. Sorry."[[labelnote:Explanation (spoilers)]]Luke finally showing up after most of the Resistance is dead with a seemingly brand new haircut (as part of the {{Foreshadowing}} to him being an AstralProjection) caused quite a few references to a line from ''WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons'' episode "[[Recap/TheSimpsonsS4E12MargeVsTheMonorail Marge Vs The Monorail]]" that lampooned the last minute timing of BigDamnHeroes.[[/labelnote]]
* β€œAt approximately one hour and fifty-two minutes into the movie, there will be [[QuieterThanSilence no sound for about ten seconds]]. This is a creative choice by the director. Thank you.” [[note]]The scene where [[spoiler:the ''Supremacy'' is torn in half after Admiral Holdo's HeroicSacrifice]] is an unexpected aversion of SpaceIsNoisy, and especially rare for a ''Star Wars'' movie. Before release, a leaked letter to the staff of one of the IMAX screenings used the above phrase to assure the staff and audience members that there was nothing wrong with their projector, apparently because [[ViewersAreMorons they received a number of complaints from people mistaking it as such]], leading to mockery from social media.[[/note]]
* Blow that piece of junk ''OUT OF THE SKY!'' [[labelnote:Explanation]]Kylo Ren says this when he sees the Millenium Falcon during the Battle of Crait.[[/labelnote]]
** '''Finn:''' Oh, they ''hate'' that ship!
* Jake Skywalker [[labelnote:Explanation]]Mark Hamill mentioned [[http://comicbook.com/starwars/2017/12/21/star-wars-the-last-jedi-mark-hamill-luke-skywalker/ in an interview]] that Luke Skywalker in ''The Last Jedi'' is so different from his and Lucas' interpretation that he had to sometimes see him as "Jake" Skywalker. It became a FanNickname for many fans who hated the film's portrayal of Luke. Often, Jake Skywalker is described as an evil or cowardly clone of Luke.[[/labelnote]]
** [=#NotMyLukeSkywalker=] [[labelnote:Explanation]]In that same interview, Mark Hamill said "[h]e's not my Luke Skywalker" to cap off the Jake Skywalker sentence. That too became a rallying meme among the disgruntled fans.[[/labelnote]]
* The fight with the guards goes with everything. [[labelnote:Explanation]]In an inversion of [[Franchise/StreetFighter "Guile's theme goes with everything"]], fans discovered that Rey and Kylo's lightsaber fight against Snoke's guards works with an impressive number of musical accompaniments. The real key to it is the brief slow motion at the start, which provides a perfect launching point for when the music really gets going.[[/labelnote]]
* Aren't you a little tall for a Stormtrooper? [[labelnote:explanation]]In an amusing inversion of Leia's line from the first film, an intended cameo from Princes Harry and William as Stormtroopers had to be cut since at over six feet tall, they comically towered over all the others.[[/labelnote]]
* BEN DO YOU WANT SOME BROWNIES BEFORE YOU GO TO BED?! [[labelnote:explanation]] The scene where Luke goes into Ben's hut and nearly kills him with his lightsaber is often compared to the RunningGag from the ''Simpsons'' episode Cape Feare where Homer barges into Bart's room with some kind of weapon, only for his intentions to be completely innocuous.[[/labelnote]]
* [[CassandraTruth Who would believe a story like that?]] [[labelnote:Explanation]]A deleted scene extending Finn's duel against Phasma has the latter snap this line when Finn reveals out loud her cowardice led to Starkiller Base's destruction, much to the surrounding Stormtroopers' consternation. The line has since been used to deny implausible outcomes.[[/labelnote]]
* No! No! You're still HOLDING ON! LET GO! [[labelnote:Explanation]] Kylo Ren says this to Rey when she refuses to join him. This quote has been used for different purposes, such as a dog refusing to let go of its toy.[[/labelnote]]
* I want every gun we have to fire on that man.[[labelnote:Explanation(spoilers)]] Kylo Ren says this when Luke shows up outside the base on Crait. This quote has been used when someone does something controversial and a forum turns on that person.[[/labelnote]]
** Luke Skywalker brushing dust off his shoulder.[[labelnote:Explanation(more spoilers)]] Luke Skywalker survives the massive gunning unharmed (because he's using a force projection) and brushes dust off his shoulder. This scene has been used when someone appears to emerge unscathed from a controversial situation.[[/labelnote]]
* "Disney paid the critics!" [[labelnote:Explanation]]Much like the Franchise/DCExtendedUniverse and its negatively-received movies, detractors of the movie have taken to accusing Disney of paying critics to give the movie positive reviews as an attempted means of justifying why critics [[CriticalDissonance had a much more positive attitude towards the movie than they did]], despite how implausible it is.[[/labelnote]]
** "Russian bots were responsible for the audience backlash!"[[labelnote:Explanation]][[https://www.theverge.com/2018/10/2/17927696/star-wars-the-last-jedi-russian-trolls-bots-study A research paper from Morten Bay claims]] that half of the negative tweets of ''The Last Jedi'' were politically right-leaning or were Russian troll bots. Despite the various flaws within that research (namely that it was analyzing negative tweets to Rian Johnson rather than the film itself) fans of the movie quickly latch on to this claim to explain the [[CriticalDissonance low audience score on Rotten Tomatoes in contrast to the critics' score]].[[/labelnote]]
* ''The Last Jedi'' now has a [[WebVideo/BackstrokeOfTheWest Chinese bootleg edition]] with [[BlindIdiotTranslation horribly translated subtitles]], which resulted in a FountainOfMemes such as:
** Powerful Kellog, Swiss, Finnland, Ross, Austria Wan Wan Kenobi, and Snooker Supremo as the characters' names
** I am ready to ship
** This is our chance to eliminate sex
** The Final Hopeless Situation
** Your parents abandoned you as mustard... really weird
** You create Kellog it?
** Wasteful Sky
** Do not do this in class
** And of course, "Do Not Want" has made a return, this time in Kylo's mouth.
* Throne room sex meta.[[note]]A Reylo fan on Tumblr made an analysis post (that has since been deleted, although reblogs and images of it still exist) claiming that Rey and Kylo's fight against the Praetorian Guards is a Jungian metaphor for Rey's sexual awakening. People [[EveryoneIsJesusInPurgatory doubtful of the symbolism]] and who don't ship Reylo soon adopted it as an example of ShippingGoggles gone wrong.[[/note]]
* [[Series/GameOfThrones Arya Stark]] is Rey's mother.[[note]]After the final season of ''Game of Thrones'' featured Arya memorably using the same fighting move as Rey of dropping her weapon from an immobilized hand into the other, it was joked that the character often referred to as "No One" was actually who Rey meant when she says her parents were nobody.[[/note]]
* Triple Kill [[labelnote:Explanation]]Rey destroys 3 TIE fighters with one shot, references the use of the phrase in League of Legends MOBA game.[[/labelnote]]
* More! MOOOOORE! [[labelnote:Explanation]]A line yelled by Kylo while bombarding Luke, which became a [[https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/kylo-rens-more-more very popular meme]] in 2020 for use in reaction images and video edits.[[/labelnote]]
* Please become funny. [[labelnote:Explanation]]A horizontally stretched still of Kylo holding his hand out to Rey with the caption "[[https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EhJ1BY_XcAIfS_e?format=jpg&name=medium PLEASE BECOME FUNNY]]" is a popular image reaction for things a poster finds, well, unfunny. It's also the profile picture for the popular meme account "[[https://twitter.com/TheFunny_mp4 @TheFunny_mp4]]" on Twitter.[[/labelnote]]
* [[https://twitter.com/HamillHimself/status/719239858087182336 A picture]] of Daisy Ridley (Rey) carrying Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker) on her back has caused people to create many, ''many'' edits of it.
