''The Hating Girl'' (''Subete ni Iya Girl'') is a manga by Koji Rokunishi, which ran in ''Young Magazine'' from 2000 to 2002.

It stars Asumi Torii, a girl with an arrow stuck through her head, and Ryouji Amada, the boy interested in her. At first Asumi tries to avoid Ryouji as he tries to find out what's going on with this strange girl, but eventually she relents and their friendship develops from there.

!!This manga provides examples of:

* AnnoyingArrows: Asumi has an arrow in her head. [[spoiler:It's eventually revealed to be the result of an archery accident.]]
* ApologizesALot: Asumi has a tendency to loudly and vigorously apologize whenever she thinks she's offended someone, prostrating herself on the ground and usually saying she's lower than a drone beetle in the process. This is pretty frequent at the start of the manga but decreases as she becomes more sure of herself.
* BrokenBird: Asumi is dealing with a lot of emotional turmoil from the social and everyday consequences of her arrow, and tends to be reclusive and [[ApologizesALot overly-apologetic]]. She slowly starts to come out of her shell and become more well-adjusted as she spends time with Ryouji, but her problems occasionally bubble to the surface, especially when she sees things that remind her of her situation.
* BrownNote:
** Asumi accidentally runs the arrow's point along the windows of a school room, bringing everyone around her to their knees in the same manner as {{nails on a chalkboard}}.
** Ryouji has a handful of things that cause him to panic, and bugs are one, specifically drone beetles. Thus, it's hard for him to hear Asumi yell out that she's lower than a drone beetle when she's apologizing.
* CursedWithAwesome: Asumi's arrow has caused her a lot of grief and pain (both emotional and physical), but is surprisingly useful at times. It's been used to reflect light, open things, and even saved her life once when she fell off the top of the school but was left hanging from the wall by the arrow. It saves her life again when [[spoiler:Ryouji sees a glint of light off it as the school is being evacuated after Tokishin's latest bombing, leading him to find Tokishin threatening to blow up Asumi with himself]].
* DrunkOnMilk: Asumi avoids soft drinks because the arrow causes her to get drunk off them. Fortunately, belching undoes the effects. Unfortunately for Ryouji in the chapter where this first happens, the belch comes after he's reacted to her rather lewd behavior changes from the soda, leading her to think he's been acting like a pervert with her and taking days of explaining from Ryouji to calm down from.
* EyeObscuringHat: [[spoiler:The school bomber]] wears a boggin that covers his eyes [[spoiler:and the horn on his head]].
* {{Fanservice}}: The one-off still arts at the start of each chapter feature Asumi in themed outfits, which are frequently midriff-baring and contrast her normal clothes, which are quite modest in comparison. {{Downplayed|Trope}} in-story, where the fanservice from Asumi is limited to the occasional PantyShot or bra reveal.
* {{Gonk}}: Any character that's portrayed negatively will be drawn as very ugly, and Asumi and Ryouji both get this treatment on occasion, especially when Asumi smacks Ryouji in the face or in the chapter when Asumi starts acting like a delinquent.
* HeirToTheDojo: Asumi's father was the head of an archery dojo and trained her and her brother, [[spoiler:but Asumi abandoned archery after she got the arrow through her head. Once she's able to reconcile herself to the past, she gets back into it.]]
* HypnoFool: Ryouji accidentally does a child regression hypnosis on Asumi in Chapter 76, causing her to start acting like a mischievous toddler. [[spoiler:The chapter ends with Asumi and Ryouji having their first kiss, but Asumi thinks Ryouji is her dad.]]
* IdiosyncraticEpisodeNaming: Instead of "Chapter X", the manga has "Head X".
* TheIdiotFromOsaka: Ryouji's ex, Towa Naoko. She's rather boorish and overbearing, and seems to enjoy taunting Asumi in the chapter where they first meet.
* JustEatGilligan: Why not just cut the arrow off? [[spoiler:Someone ''finally'' asks this question in the third-to-last chapter, making the two main characters feel pretty stupid.]]
* JustFriends: What Asumi and Ryouji say throughout the series. [[spoiler:They finally get to where they can genuinely admit their mutual love near the end of the manga.]]
* MadBomber: Shows up early on, [[spoiler:then again very close to the end of the manga]].
* {{Motifs}}: Arrows and apples, both of which tie into the archery theme that shows up every now and then [[spoiler:and is tied closely to Asumi's past]], the apples possibly being a nod to the Myth/WilliamTell legend.
* OneDialogueTwoConversations:
** One of the manga's {{running gag}}s is Ryouji and Asumi misunderstanding each other and running with completely separate trains of thought on the same theme.
** After a girl mistakenly thinks that Ryouji confesses his love to her, the start of the next chapter has her talking about her love for him while Ryouji is trying to get her to go away.
* PrehensileHair: Nose hair, to be exact. It [[PinocchioNose grows]] when the character lies.
* RedRightHand: [[spoiler:Tokishin, the school bomber,]] has a small horn on top of his head. [[spoiler:It's his belief that normal people are out to destroy people such as he that drives his bombings.]]
* SailorFuku: Worn by Ryouji's ex from Osaka but not by the girls at Ryouji and Asumi's school, where their uniform is a skirt, button-down shirt, and a sleeveless overshirt.
* SharedFamilyQuirks: Asumi's cousin Reiko has a fork sticking out of the top of her head. It's not as much of a hassle to her as the arrow is for Asumi, but it does hurt when a door shuts on it. [[spoiler:Asumi eventually tells Ryouji that Reiko stuck the fork in her own head so that Asumi wouldn't be the only person in that condition.]]
* ShoutOut: To ''VisualNovel/TokimekiMemorial'', as it was apparently the sole source of Asumi's knowledge about what girls and boys do. Learning the truth [[FreakOut is rather a shock]] [[HeadDesk to her system]].
* SilentTreatment:
** In one chapter, after Asumi goes off on Ryouji for what she thinks is him publicly announcing that she's on her period, a note in the corner of the last panel states that she didn't speak to him for three days afterward.
** In a later chapter, a major misunderstanding gets Ryouji mad enough at Asumi to not speak to her for a month.
* SmokingIsCool: Asumi starts to think this in one chapter after seeing some delinquents smoking, finding out that Ryouji has the occasional cigarette, and trying one herself. This leads her to start trying to act like a delinquent, but it gets out of hand when she's confronted by the real thing.
* SuicideAttack: The school bomber plans to do this [[spoiler:and take Asumi with him, but he's foiled by Ryouji]].
* SuperReflexes: She rarely uses it, but Asumi's archery training has given her amazing agility. In one chapter she leaps up and kicks a baseball that was headed toward her and Ryouji, and later pushes Ryouji's arm hard enough for him to punch out a bully...while said bully was in the middle of throwing a punch at Ryouji.
* TalkingToPlants: One side effect of the arrow is that Asumi can hear trees talking. This leads to some heartbreak when she discovers a tree the other trees make fun of because it has a horizontal bar running through it as a result of growing below some playground equipment. It's a harsh reminder for Asumi of her own situation.
* WillTheyOrWontThey: This starts setting in fairly soon, and kicks into high gear about 3/4 of the way through the manga, with the sticking points being their constant misunderstandings and Asumi's emotional turmoil about her self-worth. [[spoiler:They finally become a couple after Tokishin is beaten and consummate the relationship in the last chapter.]]
