Itsuwaribito are the ultimate criminals: a combination of [[TheCaper stealthy thieves]], [[TheCon con artists]] and [[AxCrazy violent thugs]]. ConsummateLiar Utsuho wants to be an Itsuwaribito--with a twist: he intends to use his lies for good and save a thousand people to carry on the dream of the old man who saved him.

Along the way he gathers some companions:
* [[RidiculouslyCuteCritter The Talking Tanuki, Pochi]], who sees Utsuho as his [[TrueCompanions family]]. The TeamPet. Adorable and hopelessly naive.
* [[CombatMedic Dr. Yakuma]], who is traveling Japan in pursuit of remedies, and who hopes to heal an unnamed person. The TeamMom and sole pillar of morality in the team.
* [[TeamMom Neya]], a former convict who left her [[PenalColony place of exile]] in order to build a safe haven for her friends. Scheming and determined, she has become the "big sister" of the "family" (at least according to Pochi).
* [[ReallySevenHundredYearsOld Hikae Nibyo]], an immortal who is over 500 years old and was the former guardian of the "Eye Stone" of the nine treasures and has a particular interest in Pochi.
* [[RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething Iwahi Yashima]], the vain ruler of Yome Mura who became smitten with Utsuho and is the owner of the "Cherry Blossom Rouge" of the nine treasures.
...And several others.

----
!!This manga contains examples of:

* ActionGirl: Subverted with Neya. Upon her introduction, she first tricks [[ConsummateLiar Utsuho]] and then puts up a decent fight against the scythe-wielding Itsuwaribito. But once she gets captured, she has to rely on Utsuho to bail her and her group out of danger.
* AlwaysSecondBest: Neya to Iwahi according to their character status in strength, intelligence, and height which is emphasized by the fact [[spoiler: Iwahi is a real princess while Neya was just Oni-Hime's Kagemusha.]]
* AmbiguousGender: [[RidiculouslyCuteCritter Pochi]], which becomes a plot point later on since not even the main cast know for sure.
* AnimalEyes: Hikae has cat-like pupils, matching the Eyestone he was protecting and going with his cat/beast motif.
* AnimalMotifs:
** In addition to various character designs being based around these, like Banda (A bandit who looks like a panda) or Yagi (Which means goat) the servant of the emperor who looks like a goat, and Hihi-baba the monkey-like old woman who runs the bathhouse (Monkeys are known to use hot springs like the one she runs in winter when it gets too cold for them).
** Each book [[BadExportForYou (exclusive to Japan)]] comes with an image of a character dressed as an animal that is [[AnimalStereotypes similar to them]]: Utsuho the trickster is a [[CunningLikeAFox clever fox]], [[ShapedLikeItself Pochi the talking tanuki is a tanuki]], the harmless looking Neya is a [[KillerRabbit cute Rabbit]], the honest doctor Yak''[[PunnyName uma]]'' is a [[BilingualBonus hardworking horse]], Tenka is a moth, Yo is a dove, the immortal Hikae is a [[CatsAreMagic Cat]], Uzume the childlike [[InSeriesNickname "Bird-Brain"]] is a baby chick, and ''[[PunnyName Cho]]''za (who often has a [[ButterflyOfDeathAndRebirth butterfly motif]] on his clothes anyway) is a [[BilingualBonus butterfly]].
** This can also apply to Kuroha and Saiha, who renamed themselves after birds to represent their shared BrokenBird history. Kuroha was also the one who named Uzume after a type of bird as well, fitting his own bird motif and making an intentional case of bird based ThemeNaming.
* AristocratsAreEvil: More like [[{{Jerkass}} jerkasses]], but the nobles who decide to try and destroy the boat that Dr. Yakuma is making just because they think it would be funny after he worked on it so hard.
* ArrangedMarriage: According to [[spoiler: Pochi/Chitchoriina's]] grandfather they already have a fiancée, [[spoiler: a tanuki named Mujina Tsukumo]], who is in charge of keeping outsiders away from their village.
* ArtShift: It often uses simplified and stylized imagery to depict flashbacks or when a story is being told by another character.
* TheAtoner: The old monk running the orphan village who takes in Utsuho. [[spoiler: He tried and failed to save his daughter from falling off a cliff. As penance, he hopes to save as many children as he can.]]
* BadPowersGoodPeople: Utsuho uses all the skills of an Itsuwaribito, including bombs, poison, lies, and physical violence- all in the name of helping people.
* BadassBookworm:
** Dr. Yakuma. Also Utsuho, when he reveals skills that must have taken quite a bit of reading (knowing Latin names of poisonous plants, for example). Choza is also noted to be a bit of a bookworm and is often seen reading in flashbacks of Kuroha's crew.
** Utsuho is an especially good example, showing a comprehensive and detailed knowledge of physics, chemistry, and biology (particularly as they pertain to explosives and poisons). He also has a fair-sized body of knowledge relating to geography, folklore. He's especially knowledgeable in psychology, which he uses to make his lies even more effective. Yet he's more than capable of holding his own in a direct fight.
%%* BandagedFace: The [[spoiler: Talking Tanuki]] on Nadeshiko Island.
* BerserkButton: Do not harm Pochi (or anybody else Utsuho cares about). Same goes with hurting or killing any of Uzume's companions.
* BettyAndVeronica: Both the {{Tomboy}}ish CoolBigSis Neya (Betty) and glamorous, ProudBeauty Princess Iwahi (Veronica) are in love with Utsuho.
* {{Bifauxnen}}: [[spoiler: Yu is revealed to be a girl who just likes to dress in male clothing.]]
* BilingualBonus: In the English title there is an untranslated kanji after "Itsuwaribito" which means "Utsuho" while "Itsuwaribito Utsuho" is the original title in Japanese. There are also many [[PunnyName pun-based]] and [[MeaningfulName meaningful]] names in this manga that may get LostInTranslation.
* BokeAndTsukkomiRoutine: Typically performed by Uzume and Choza respectively. Invoked and subverted in one bonus strip where Choza ''tries'' to act as a "Boke" but everyone around him either takes what he said seriously and are touched by his statement or understand that he is joking but don't say anything.
* BrokenAesop: Deliberately broken and PlayedForLaughs. Dr. Yakuma tries to prove to Utsuho that hard, honest work is good by building a boat by hand. When Utsuho beats up the nobles who try to wreck the boat and even comes up with a handmade sail, Dr. Yakuma thinks that he's learned his lesson. When it starts coming apart, Utsuho complains that the nobles did a terrible job sewing it, and [[RefugeInAudacity reveals some stolen food.]]
* ButtMonkey: Dr.Yakuma, though it took a ''stranger'' pointing out to him how badly Utsuho treats him on an almost constant basis for him to realize it himself.
* ClingyJealousGirl:
** While she is [[PrecociousCrush almost a decade younger]] than him [[WaifProphet Minamo]] is one towards [[ObliviousToLove Uzume]], possibly because he was the one who [[RescueRomance decided to save her]].
** Saiha is a male example of this for Kuroha instead of the tropes traditional [[CrazyJealousGuy male counterpart]] based on his reaction to [[CuddleBug Uzume]] getting to [[TheGlomp "Familiar"]] with them.
* ClingyMacGuffin: Since some of the nine treasures can only be used by specific people Minamo's Ancient Kimono and [[spoiler: Yakuma's]] Sapphire Magatama are both cases of these since they can't be taken off.
* CloudCuckooLander:
** Pochi, who regularly asks, "Is anyone there? If not, say so!"
** Also, Utsuho, who decides that a good way to get to Nadeshiko Island is by ''getting themselves caught by the police and exiled.''
* CloudCuckooLandersMinder: Choza is stuck as something between a DotingParent, an AloofBigBrother, and frustrated babysitter for Uzume since even though the age gap between them isn't that big [[ManChild you couldn't guess it by how Uzume acts]] and Choza is ''very'' {{Tsundere}} with the people he's close too.
* CombatMedic: Dr.Yakuma, who is a skilled surgeon and also strong enough to send a man flying. Occasionally his medical skills help him out: When facing a {{Mook}} who is absurdly proud of his muscles, Yakuma casually knocks him out with a single blow to the head (his muscles don't help).
* ComedicSociopathy: Utsuho stealing from random people or tricking his friends (like getting Dr. Yakuma to pay his tab) is usually PlayedForLaughs.
* TheCon: Most Itsuwaribito. It comes with the job description. A notable example is a “medicine man” who claims to be healing a lord’s sickness- while really stopping his pain with opium while helping himself to the lord’s estate.
* CoolShades: Hisago the magician has a black pair [[RuleOfCool (Despite the time period)]], and the Itsuwaribito Kuroha has a pair of OpaqueNerdGlasses in a similar style.
* ConsummateLiar:
** Utsuho, who can trick just about anyone and lies almost compulsively. He even ''lies about lying.'' [[JustifiedTrope Justified:]] His lies succeed because he uses poison and bombs to put his opponents on edge, [[FailureIsTheOnlyOption puts them in a position where believing/not believing him could be equally deadly,]] then finishes them off.
** Any Itsuwaribito worth anything will be this.
* CuteAndPsycho: [[spoiler: Iriya]], once he drops the cute kid act and starts painting his face with blood.
* DarkAndTroubledPast:
** Utsuho, who [[UsedToBeASweetKid as a child was honest to a fault]] – so honest that he told a group of bandits about the mansion in which he lived. The bandits [[ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill slaughtered everyone inside.]]
** Backstories like this tend to be common among itsuwaribito.
* DeathEqualsRedemption: After suffering a massive chest wound, [[spoiler: the tanuki]] redeems himself by setting off an explosion to contain a forest fire that would have doomed an entire island. He is clearly touched by [[TrueCompanions Pochi wanting to go with Utsuho to set off the explosion, despite it being a suicide mission]], and decides that he should save the island (and die) instead of them.
* DisguisedInDrag:
** The man who sneaks into Neya's hideout on Nadeshiko Island by pretending to be an injured woman. Bonus points for also wearing a flesh mask to disguise the pincer tattoos marking him as a murderer.
** Later the entire group has to pretend to be women to infiltrate a LadyLand that is home to one of the nine treasures.
* DisproportionateRetribution:
** A serial killer hunts down liars. While this would be fine as long as he kills [[AssholeVictim Itsuwaribito]] preying on the innocent, he now kills anyone for lying at all.
** In response to getting tricked, Utsuho spends quite a while muttering about killing everyone involved.
* TheDitz:
** Pochi, who chases a butterfly ''off the edge of cliff'' before realizing his mistake.
** Uzume as well to the point he is only slightly smarter than Pochi, makes friends with his enemies, and needs Choza to fix his many verbal mistakes.
* DoomedHometown: Bonus points go to Utsuho, who had this happen twice. [[spoiler: First with the mansion where he lived and second with the village of orphans.]]
* {{Doppelganger}}: The demon princess of Sasaka supposedly had one which brought into question which one of them was killed when the village revolted.
* DrugsAreBad: The "medicine man" is "curing" a feudal lord by giving him opium to make the pain go away.
* DudeLooksLikeALady: Dr. Yakuma, which meant that while everyone else had to be DisguisedInDrag he didn't need to do anything for the locals to think he was a girl.
* DumbMuscle: Uzume, who makes up for his lack in brains with raw beast-like power and incredibly fast reflexes.
%%* EvilPoacher: The hunter chasing after Pochi.
* ExactlyWhatIAimedAt: Utsuho says that he can defeat a cannon with a poisoned rock. He throws the rock, but the cannon user dodges - only to allow the rock to set off a trap which takes out the cannon user.
* {{Expy}}:
** Utsuho has been described as a darker and meaner [[{{Manga/Naruto}} Naruto Uzumaki]], which makes sense since Itsuwaribito are similar to ninja in various aspects and their character designs are both based on foxes, which are known for being the tricksters of the animal kingdom.
** Choza also has many similarities to [[{{Manga/Bleach}} Sui Fong]] since they are both Tsundere characters who fight with claw-like blades that cover their finger(s) and tell their enemy that it will only take two direct hits from said blade(s) to kill them, not to mention their [[MeaningfulName insect based names]] and [[FragileSpeedster overall fighting styles]] are a play on the phrase "Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee".
* EyeScream:
** Happens to [[spoiler: the old man]] by way of [[spoiler: Iriya]], who cuts him across the eyes with a sword.
** Utsuho pretends that his eyes fell out, freaking out Iriya and the old man. It becomes less funny when the above happens.
* EyesAlwaysShut: Utsuho's default expression. [[LetsGetDangerous When he opens his eyes…]]
* FacelessGoons: The medicine man uses {{Mooks}} wearing demon masks. This comes back to bite him in the butt when Utsuho and crew disguise themselves as his men.
* FacialMarkings: Uzume and [[spoiler: Choza]] both have these, in addition to many other itsuwaribito, see MarkOfShame.
* FakingTheDead:
** Utsuho throws a (blunt) arrow into Neya's chest to make the scythe-wielding itsuwaribito give her up as a hostage.
** [[InvertedTrope Inverted]]: [[spoiler: The tanuki shapeshifts into the form of a dead person, leading people to believe that his potion can really bring the dead back to life]].
* FangsAreEvil: Choza, who also has MoreTeethThanTheOsmondFamily. [[spoiler: He later [[HeelFaceTurn subverts this.]]]]
* {{Foreshadowing}}:
** Uzume and Choza are seen sharing rumors about Kuroha and Saiha's MysteriousPast and Choza points out that the two of them can't even be sure what [[spoiler: gender]] Kuroha is since they have never seen them without their mask on. [[spoiler: Both are later lampshaded by Choza when it turns out Kuroha is a woman and both of the rumors he and Uzume heard are technically true after Kuroha tells them the whole story.]]
** In a funny moment Yorushichi, the junior inspector sent to watch Utsuho's group, assures Utsuho that if things get too dangerous [[ScrewThisImOuttaHere he can run really fast]] turns out this is because he has ''very'' powerful legs, which make him good [[ExtremityExtremist at kicking too]] and because [[spoiler: he is Hiruko, the government agent who took the Dual Flowers sandals when Utsuho's group found them [[SuperSpeed thanks to his amazing speed earlier]]]]. GenreSavvy readers might also notice that his hair also matches the hairstyle of [[spoiler: the government agent]] which was one of the few physical features that were visible [[spoiler: from under his hood.]]
** In the Hallucination based "utopia" Dr. Yakuma saw an elegant looking woman while the local ruler was talking about how her land could let you live the rest of your days "living" with someone you miss or could never be with in the real world. [[spoiler: This woman is later revealed to be Lady Kohi, the wife of the currently ill emperor that Dr. Yakuma is trying to cure.]]
* FreudianExcuse: A lot of the major antagonists are only evil because they've been badly hurt in their childhoods, causing them to lash out against humanity and the world.
** The SerialKiller who targets liars believed that he's been betrayed by his adoptive parents [[spoiler:who apparently pushed him into a well while they are supposed to be foraging for food during a famine.]] Outraged by their apparent "lie", he vows to kill every person who tells even a single lie, including children.
** Every member of Kuroha's group have sufffered great misfortunes. Choza and Uzume have been [[AllOfTheOtherReindeer cruelly abused by the prople of their homeland]]--Choza because [[SinsOfOurFathers his father was a criminal]], Uzume because of his [[SuperStrength "powers"]]. Kuroha and Saiha [[spoiler:were [[RapeAsBackstory sexually abused]] and otherwise tortured by Kuroha's father.]]
* GambitPileup: Some Itsuwaribito on Nadeshiko Island try and pull ThePlan on Utsuho by making him defend against several measures that only lead him getting surrounded. But it turns out that [[spoiler: Utsuho had been trying to get them all in one place so he could pretend to poison them and scatter them]].
* GenderBlenderName: Pochi's real full name, Ponpokorii Chitchoriina, contains both feminine and masculine names, which reinforces their AmbiguousGender.
-->'''Neya:''' But Chitchoriina is obviously a girl's name.\
'''Uzume:''' Ponpokorii is a boy's name.
* GodzillaThreshold: When surrounded by goons in a nobleman's mansion (a nobleman who Dr. Yakuma is trying to save), Utsuho decides that the best way to escape is by ''burning the place down.''
* {{Gonk}}: Kuroha [[spoiler: disguises as]] a portly, balding, middle-aged man with glasses. Yorushichi the junior inspector looks like a literal BeadyEyedLoser, but [[ButterFace aside from that]] looks like a borderline {{Bishonen}} [[spoiler: and does when Hiruko puts [[InTheHood his hood back on]]]].
* GoodCostumeSwitch: [[spoiler:Choza and Uzume]] are both seen getting their new outfits shortly after [[spoiler:joining Utsuho's group.]]
%%* GoodThingYouCanHeal
* GottaCatchEmAll: The current goal of Utsuho's group is to collect all of the nine sacred treasures.
* GuileHero: Utsuho uses his smarts just as much (if not more) than his fighting skills. Part of the reason he seems untouchable is that most people are screwed by the time he gets close enough for hand to hand combat.
* HappilyAdopted:
** Pochi is quite happy about being adopted by Utsuho and their growing RagTagBunchOfMisfits "family".
** Minamo is also pretty happy about being taken in by Uzume and his group despite them all being wanted criminals. [[spoiler: Turns out in Uzume's backstory Kuroha's gang basically adopted him too, after they found him and named him, which is why he cares about them so much. So, despite Uzume not knowing her gender at the time, Kuroha became his "mom", making Saiha his "dad" because of his relationship with her, while Choza eventually made himself Uzume's adoptive "big brother".]]
%%* HellishPupils
* HeroicBSOD:
** Utsuho when he realizes he has been tricked. He then plots a RoaringRampageOfRevenge which includes killing everyone who participated in it. Thankfully, he cools off pretty quickly.
** Uzume [[FreakOut also had a]] [[MadnessMantra severe]] [[SayMyName reaction]] to [[spoiler: Choza [[TakingTheBullet almost getting himself killed]] during Uzume's fight with Iriya]], though whether that counts as a HeroicBSOD or a VillainousBSOD is unclear.
* HeroicComedicSociopath: Utsuho is equal parts this and JerkWithAHeartOfGold. He gleefully messes with people’s minds, tricks them, threatens them, poisons them, blows them up or beats them up, all because he [[ItAmusedMe thinks it’s fun.]]
%%* HiddenElfVillage: The Village of Lies.
* HiddenWeapons: The go-to weapons for many itsuwaribito, ranging from [[ThrowDownTheBomblet small explosives hidden in normal clothing]], to [[HiddenWeapons a small tanto-like blade inside the handle of a larger katana]], to [[PoisonedWeapons poisoned hand-claws being covered by long sleeves]].
* HooksAndCrooks: Several enemy itsuwaribito use hooks and curved blades as part of their weapons, the most prominent being Uzume, who has them at the ends of his segmented staff. [[spoiler: After his HeelFaceTurn he asks for Choza's help to remove them since he isn't going to kill anymore.]]
* HumansAreTheRealMonsters:
** The humans who [[spoiler: lied to the tanuki and told them that they could be friends, only to gather them into one place and kill them for food]].
** Then subverted when Utsuho points out that most animals are not much better when it comes to killing for food.
* HypocriticalHumor: When Uzume runs into a room topless, it's [[{{Stripperiffic}} Iwahi]] who hits him for being "indecent" around [[CoolBigSis Neya and Minamo]].
* IdenticalStranger: The demon princess of Sasaka and her "Kagemusha", who was just a local girl who had recently become an orphan.
* IgnoredConfession: When Neya Murito confesses her feelings to Utsuho Azako loudly, clearly, with no distractions or anything to cover it up or interrupt it, he outright ignores it. He stays silent, pretends he never heard her and right after makes up an excuse to walk off quickly, completely devastating her.
* IKnowYourTrueName: Some characters, [[spoiler: like Tsukumo]], have the ability to control people for a period of time as long as they say that person's real name. [[spoiler: How effective the technique is depends on how much of the name is used. While its orders are absolute to characters with OnlyOneName, if the target has both a given name and surname and only the given name is used then the victim can still break free of the user's control.]]
* ILied:
** Most villains [[SociopathicHero and Utsuho]] seem to like doing this. One that stands out as particularly cruel is the [[EvilPoacher hunter]] [[MoralEventHorizon gleefully showing Pochi his mother’s corpse- flayed and stuffed- after promising to return her safely.]]
** Basically, this happens all the time. Often even about the lying!
* IllNeverTellYouWhatImTellingYou: Uzume often ends up blurting out secret information to his enemies.
* ImmortalLifeIsCheap: Hikae often treats his life as "expendable" due to his immortality and regeneration abilities, though Pochi tries to talk him out of this mindset since [[ImmortalityHurts being injured still hurts him]] even if [[StepfordSmiler he tries not to show it.]]
* ImprobableWeaponUser:
** Utsuho can use his scarves/obi to catch and divert ''crossbow bolts.''
** The medicine man as well. He uses a fan made of blades… which can also separate and become flying knives.
** The serial killer uses his extraordinarily strong fingers to shoot needles ''with enough force to knock someone's tongue out the back of their head.''
** Dr. Yakuma's medicine box can be used to stop said serial killer's needles. And arrows. He also uses it as a club.
* ImpossiblyCoolClothes: The Ancient Robe of the 9 treasures is this by design since, while [[ClingyMacGuffin it can never be taken off]], [[BulletproofFashionPlate it and its wearer can never be damaged]], [[DirtForcefield it doesn't seem to get dirty]] and [[ConvenientColorChange it changes color to match its current wearer]].
* TheInfiltration: Utsuho and Dr. Yakuma do this to the medicine man. Utsuho's and Uzume's groups both need to disguise themselves as women in order to infiltrate the local LadyLand.
* ItAmusedMe:
** Dr. Yakuma thinks that this is Utsuho’s motivation for helping people - he just really loves lying. [[TakeUpMySword Turns out it’s a]] [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold little more complicated…]]
** This ''is'', however, Hikae's philosophy. He puts the treasure he's been guarding for 500 hundred years up as the prize for a dopey memory game simply because he thinks it's fun. He's also only following Utsuho and Pochi because he finds him interesting and hilarious. His reaction to things that ''don't'' amuse him, however, tends to be somewhere between apathy and murderous.
* ItsAllAboutMe:
** The reaction that most Itsuwaribito or criminals in general have to being tricked by Utsuho. Utsuho points out the hypocrisy involved.
** Utsuho himself gets this way [[spoiler: the first time he gets tricked]].
** Ironically, the only one who actually concedes defeat gracefully is [[spoiler: [[AxCrazy Iriya]]]] [[VillainousBreakdown at first]].
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold:
** Utsuho is equal parts this and SociopathicHero. While he really loves lying, he uses his skills to help others in a way that goes above and beyond what he would do if he was [[ForTheEvulz only doing it for fun.]]
** As the series progresses, he becomes more and more like this.
** [[{{Tsundere}} Choza]] and [[TokenEvilTeammate Hikae]] have both shown shades of this as well.
* KillerRabbit: Utsuho. He looks like a shifty little punk. Who carries bombs and poison. On a similar note Uzume may also count since he is normally so [[ManChild childish]], [[FriendlyEnemy friendly]], and [[GoodIsDumb stupid]] that it can be easy to forget he is ''the'' strongest character introduced so far.
%%* KnockoutGas: One of Utsuho's weapons.
* LethalChef: Iwahi is a special sort since she clearly knew the name of every type of PoisonMushroom she used to make her soup ([[ShownTheirWork all of which are real poisonous and hallucinogenic mushrooms that can be found in Japan]]) but [[IdiotBall apparently didn't realize]] that each mushroom got its [[NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast dangerous sounding name because it was not safe for human consumption]]. Dr. Yakuma stops her before she feeds it to anybody but after Hikae chooses to eat it anyway he tells her it [[SupremeChef tasted good despite the ingredients she used]], so as long as she uses safe mushrooms her cooking should be fine.
* LetThemDieHappy: Utsuho tells the old man on his deathbed that [[spoiler: the orphans slaughtered by Iriya are all right and are waiting outside, worried about him.]] [[TearJerker He dies with a smile on his face.]]
* LightningBruiser:
** Utsuho, who is quick enough to dodge most attacks and strong enough to knock a man out with a single punch, despite his slim frame.
** Uzume can also count as an example since his reaction times are much faster than a normal persons letting him [[spoiler: [[NoHoldsBarredBeatDown utterly destroy Iriya]] by following Utsuho's directions since even though Iriya could hear every command Utsuho gave him Uzume moved to quickly for it to make any difference.]]
* LivingLieDetector: The serial killer who hunts down liars. [[spoiler: He just doesn’t trust anyone and automatically assumes that they are lying. When he faces Utsuho, who lies about lying, his LieDetector fails miserably.]]
* LockedIntoStrangeness: According to an anniversary bonus chapter both Utsuho, who is 17, and Uzume, who is assumed to be around 19, had black hair when they were kids despite having pure white hair now. Since both have a DarkAndTroubledPast, it can be safely assumed that this is the cause.
* LookalikeLovers: [[spoiler:Saiha and Kuroha]] both have RavenHairIvorySkin, and have the exact same facial features.
* LoopholeAbuse: When hired to protect a swindler, Utsuho and friends write up a contract promising to protect him. When his victims attack, they grab him and run - leaving what he stole behind for the victims to reclaim.
* LoveTriangle: Neya and Iwahi has a classic BettyAndVeronica rivalry over Utsuho, although this is subverted when Iwahi ends up having more ShipTease with Hikae instead.
* {{Malaproper}}: Uzume tends to do this regardless of the situation, so Choza ends up correcting him a lot.
* MarkOfShame: In some areas facial tattoos around the eyes are given to the children of criminals, [[CycleOfRevenge which leads to them being treated badly by those around them and tends to result in them becoming just like their parents]].
* MasterPoisoner: Choza, which is why his poisoned claws are his weapon of choice, he knows exactly which of his poisons will kill his opponent or simply knock them out and how much of it is needed to achieve the desired effect on that person.
* MeaningfulName: [[ColorCharacter Kuroha]] gave themself a MeaningfulRename to [[AnimalMotif "Crow"]] and is mostly seen wearing a pitch black kimono, which is much more obvious when seen [[spoiler: without her mask because of her [[CurtainsMatchTheWindows Black eyes]] and [[EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette long black hair]].]]
* MinoredInAsskicking: Dr. Yakuma, which makes sense since being a doctor he knows how to hurt as well as heal.
* TheMole: [[spoiler: Iriya]] infiltrates the village of orphan children, but is actually the leader of a group of bandits.
* MoralityPet: Pochi acts as one for Utsuho and Hikae, while Choza is mentioned to be much less hostile then when Kuroha and Saiha first met him because of how he has needed to act as a "big brother" towards Uzume and [[spoiler: Kuroha starts trying [[KickTheMoralityPet get rid of Uzume]] because she knows that staying with her and Saiha will hurt him emotionally since he doesn't want to kill anymore, which she knows she can't avoid.]]
* MoreDakka: Upon getting kicked, the poacher pulls out a ''cannon.''
* MouthtoMouthForceFeeding: [[spoiler:Gin Hobaku]] finally reveals his [[VillainWithGoodPublicity true nature]] to his fiancee, [[spoiler:Rurihime]], by embracing and kissing her, then forcing her to swallow a small explosive through the kiss, before pushing her off a tower.
* MultipleChoicePast: Uzume and Choza have heard of different accounts on how Kuroha and Saiha actually came together. One story says that they are childhood friends who were mistreated by the people around them, and swearing revenge against the world as a result. The other says that Saiha is the son of an {{abusive|Parent}} feudal lord, while Kuroha is the family's slave who helped him escape. [[spoiler:In a sense, both stories are true: Kuroha is the ''daughter'' of a perverted feuadal lord who [[ParentalIncest sexually abused]] her, while Saiha was [[DepravedBisexual his]] {{sex slave}}. The two would often secretly meet up and offer comfort to one another, until Kuroha's father caught them together and tried to skill Saiha in a rage. Kuroha killed him in retaliation, but because her father was a VillainWithGoodPublicity, they became fugitives, and had to change their faces and identities to survive.]]
* NeverMyFault: The three brothers who went around killing fireworks-makers. They are completely unable to acknowledge that the reason their shop failed was because they weren't especially good at making fireworks. This leads to them [[spoiler:being easily manipulated into believing that the destruction of their workshop was the result of arson rather than their own incompetence, leading to their killing spree]].
* TheNicknamer: Iwahi who tends to base them on their animal motif. Examples being Hikae, who is Nyan-Nyan (the sound of a cat meowing) and Uzume who is Tori-san (Mr.bird)
* NightmareFace:
** After a bit of EyeScream and {{Squick}} in his past, the villain in chapters 9-11 has a truly messed up face. We even get to see the events that caused it!
** [[spoiler: Iriya]] also has this under their BandagedFace that gives them a [[Franchise/{{Batman}} Two-Face]] like appearance very fitting for an Itsuwaribito [[spoiler: that focuses on being a BitchInSheepsClothing]].
* NobleWomansLaugh: Neya does this when she and Utsuho essentially agree to act as if [[spoiler: she never tricked him.]]
* NonHumanSidekick: Pochi to Utsuho.
* NoOntologicalInertia: After Utsuho wins the Eyestone of the 9 treasures and its guardian Hikae decides to join his group Iwato mountain, where its shrine was located, collapses in on itself since according to Hikae God said that without the jewel the mountain would have no reason to exist.
* TheNoseKnows: Utsuho, [[spoiler: enough to SpotTheImposter.]]
* NothingUpMySleeve: Choza is an itsuwaribito who wears very long sleeves to cover his claws.
* NotQuiteDead: [[spoiler: Iriya didn't die after he destroyed Utsuho's orphanage.]]
* OffingTheOffspring:
** [[spoiler: The serial killer]] was pushed down a well by his adopted parents so that they would have more food during a famine, after they told him that they would be a family.
** Though Utsuho points out that [[spoiler: the serial killer’s]] parents could have pushed him into the well to save him from [[spoiler: the wolf that eats them]]. Utsuho says that this story might as well be the true one since it would make [[spoiler: the serial killer]] happier.
* OhCrap:
** The usual look on villains’ faces when Utsuho’s deceit is revealed.
** A literal one when Utsuho tricks Sagara into taking a super-strength laxative. ([[ILied Or did he]]?)
** Utsuho get’s a truly epic one when [[spoiler: he realizes someone pulled one over on ''him'']].
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickName: A varity is played with Dr. Yakuma; since Utsuho keeps calling him [[TeamMom "mom"]] [[TheDitz Uzume]] thinks that "mom" ''is'' his name ([[{{Troll}} while Utsuho tells him to call him "mother-in-law" instead)]], while Choza is smart enough to know this isn't the case and corrects him Choza apparently thinks [[EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep his name is just "Doctor"]]. Yakuma is not pleased.
* OracularUrchin: Minamo is a young seer who has visions of the future so she can use this information to help her and those she cares about, but has no control of them so she rarely has much context to work with.
%%* OrphanageOfLove: The orphan village Utsuho grows up in.
* PaperThinDisguise: While most itsuwaribito use make up or [[LatexPerfection detailed masks]] to hide their identity's, [[spoiler: Hiruko and Kuroha]] both end up using their real faces as their "masks" since no one would be able to recognize them in the Capital and Ouna respectively.
* PayEvilUntoEvil:
** Utsuho’s mission. He intends to help those who honesty cannot protect.
** Also, the serial killer who hunts down liars and kills them.
** The [[spoiler: Talking Tanuki]] who lies to and manipulates humans [[spoiler: after humans killed all of his companions]].
* PenalColony: Nadeshiko Island, place of exile for Itsuwaribito. It is virtually impossible to escape from (without a large boat) due to sea currents. There are two groups of criminals: Neya's group, consisting of children, the elderly, and anyone inclined towards peace, and a group of "hard-core criminals" led by [[spoiler: a tanuki]] who wants to [[KillAllHumans rid the island of humans]].
* PingPongNaivete: Uzume since even though he has expressed an interest in women on multiple occasions he didn't seem to realize why walking in on Neya, Iwahi, and Minamo while he was shirtless ''might'' be seen as improper.
* PrincessesRule: Iwahi Yashima of Yome Mura, though possibly justified by the fact the "princess" in question is both unmarried and very vain so she might have chosen to keep the title "Princess" because she liked it more. The 8 year old "Oni-Hime" (literally the "Demon Princess") of Sasaka also counts.
* RidiculouslyCuteCritter: The Talking Tanuki, Pochi.
* SamusIsAGirl: Turns out the reason why so many of the 9 legendary treasures are female accessories is because the "fool" who received these gifts from "God" was a woman. [[spoiler: Kuroha also turns out to be a woman.]]
* SatelliteCharacter: Of Kuroha's group, Saiha receives the least development, and his role is primarily restricted to being Kuroha's NumberTwo. The fact that the two have basically share the same backstory [[spoiler:of being Kuroha's father's {{sex slave}}s]], and his dedication to [[spoiler:always protect and be with her]], leaves little room for him to break out as his own person.
* ScaryTeeth: Choza, who has a set of sharp teeth that would make any shark proud.
* ScienceHero: Utsuho when using his handmade bombs, poisons and chemicals. Particularly impressive are his smoke bomb and a chemical that heats up metal, causing his opponent to drop their metal weapon.
* ScrewTheMoneyIHaveRules: When Utsuho, Dr. Yakuma and Neya end up taking a job (without knowing what they were getting into) as bodyguards to a swindler who hires them to protect him from his victims. They manage to give the villagers back what the swindler stole through LoopholeAbuse, despite being promised a generous sum of money.
* SecretTestOfCharacter: The "test" Hikae gave Utsuho seemed to be one of these. [[spoiler: It was done to see how interesting/amusing Utsuho was, since [[ItAmusedMe Hikae was bored]] and wanted to get a better grasp of Utsuho's character while also [[DesperatelyLookingForAPurposeInLife trying to find something else worth living for]] after his role as the Eyestone's guardian was finished.]]
* SelfProclaimedLiar: Utusuho. The first chapter's battle alone has him admitting to lying so often it's impossible to keep straight any true statements.
* ShipperOnDeck: Dr. Yakuma ships Neya and Utsuho. Likewise Neya ships Yakuma and [[spoiler: Lady Kohi, the wife of the emperor that Yakuma is trying to save]].
* SignificantNameOverlap:
** Used as a RedHerring in the Doll Village Arc, when Neya finds a scroll written by the ruler of the land saying [[spoiler:that he named one of his dolls "Yo" after mentioning that his son has died]], which seems to hint that Yo [[spoiler:is a doll made to [[ReplacementGoldfish replace the lord's dead son]].]] This turns out not to be the case, as Yo is actually [[spoiler:the lord's living ''[[SamusIsAGirl daughter]]'', and she says that her father does have a habit of naming his defective dolls after her.]]
** [[spoiler:Gin and Kin]] is revealed to share the same birth name, [[spoiler:Shirogane, which can either mean "white silver" and "white gold"]]. This is part of the reason why the two are so close, as they believe that their shared names signify that they are destined to achieve great things together. In fact, [[spoiler:Gin]] likes the RockThemeNaming of their original names so much that when he wants to steal some other people's names/identities to cover up their misdeeds, he goes out of his way to find people whose names reflect their old ones.[[note]]''Gin'' means silver, while ''kin'' means gold.[[/note]]
%%* SinisterScythe: The Itsuwaribito in drag wields one of these.
* TheSmurfettePrinciple: For a while Neya was the only confirmed female traveling with Utsuho and the trope is lampshaded by Uzume who believes the major difference between His gang and Utsuho's was the fact that Kuroha's gang didn't have an obviously female member.
* SpotTheImposter: The [[spoiler: Talking Tanuki]] induces this by turning first into Utsuho and nearly killing Neya, then turning into Dr. Yakuma, forcing Utsuho and Neya to figure out which is which. [[spoiler: Utsuho asks him a question, and since the tanuki does not know how Yakuma would answer, Ustuho knows that the first one to answer is real.]] The [[spoiler: tanuki]] points out that this will only work once, and turns into Neya, at which point [[spoiler: Utsuho locates him by smell.]]
%%* StealthPun
* {{Stripperiffic}}: Iwahi wears little more than a very mini ShowgirlSkirt, detached sleeves, and a cropped [[SexyBacklessOutfit backless]] [[ImpossiblyCoolClothes fishnet top with black embroidery]]. No points for guessing who is MsFanservice around here.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: [[spoiler: Ageha]] looks just like a young gender flipped version of her father [[spoiler: only with one of Uzume's painted cheek markings instead of Choza's tattoos.]]
* StuffBlowingUp: Utsuho's handmade bombs. He also plants them in the ground to serve as land mines.
* SuperDeformed: While every recurring character ends up chibified at some point the stand-outs are Pochi who has it done to show how cute they are since their mother was shown to be a realistic looking Tanuki, Minamo who is also a child and is most often seen in group shots, and Iwahi who has the most detailed and fanservicy design so gets this treatment to keep from having too much fanservice which may bother some readers and save some time in the process.
* SuperDrowningSkills: During the HotSpringsEpisode Pochi has to have Neya wash them in a bucket because they are too young and can't swim yet.
* SuperNotDrowningSkills: During the HotSpringsEpisode, [[spoiler: Choza]] spends most of their time there underwater [[spoiler:so the other guys can't see his MarkOfShame]].
* TakeUpMySword: Utsuho’s goal is to achieve the old man’s dream in his place.
* TattooedCrook: Murderers get pincers tattooed on the side of their mouths.
* TeamMom: Dr. Yakuma takes this position, often nagging the others or complete strangers about proper behavior.
* ThemeNaming: Kuro''ha'' and Sai''ha'' [[MeaningfulRename chose to name themselves]] after birds when they started their group and named Uzume after a type of bird as well. [[spoiler: In the Epilogue TimeSkip Choza names his daughter "Age''ha''" or "''Swallow''tail Butterfly" assumedly to honor their memory in his own way while having it match the "Cho" from his own name which means "Butterfly".]]
* ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill: [[spoiler: Iriya]], who says he doesn’t like to leave any ill feelings behind, usually slaughters all of his victims. [[spoiler: [[MoralEventHorizon Even orphan children]].]]
* ThirdPersonPerson: Minamo, who even refers herself in third-person while thinking. Pochi is also an example.
* ThroughHisStomach: Inverted. Iwahi goes from wanting to marry Utsuho to falling in love with Hikae since the latter is the only one willing to eat [[LethalChef her cooking]], and even calls it delicious.
* TogetherInDeath: [[spoiler:Kuroha and Saiha's]] spirits are seen together after they were both [[spoiler:killed by Iriya.]]
* TokenEvilTeammate: Hikae was the most violent of Utsuho's group since he had no qualms about killing others and considered watching people killing their comrades over the Eyestone "fun". [[spoiler: This causes some problems between him and [[HeelFaceTurn Uzume]] later on since he [[BerserkButton killed Banda from Uzume's former group]].]]
* TooDumbToLive: Pochi, who is naive and trusting to a fault. Even to an ObviouslyEvil poacher.
* TookALevelInJerkass: In an omake strip, Pochi refuses to give Dr. Yakuma any of his tangerines.
* TranslatorBuddy: Choza will correct Uzume's ''many'' [[{{Malaproper}} verbal mistakes]], even when they are in the middle of [[CasualDangerDialogue life or death situations]].
* TrickBomb: Utsuho creates one that looks like a smoke screen but is actually KnockoutGas.
* TrueCompanions:
** Utsuho and Pochi, who both have no remaining living family. Utsuho would risk his life for Pochi, and Pochi is willing to follow Utsuho even into a situation in which he knows he could die. The rest of their little "family" ends up developing this dynamic as well.
** Uzume would like his group to be like this, since they are the closest thing he has to a family, but it is more like its split between he, Choza, and Minamo as one "set" and Saiha and Kuroha as another due to trust issues.
* {{Tsundere}}: Ironically [[GenderFlipped Choza]] seems to be one of these towards ''everyone'' around him even when thinking to himself, claiming it wouldn't matter to him if someone in his group dies even though he shows he really does care a lot about all of them.
* UnsettlingGenderReveal:
** [[spoiler: Kuroha is a woman. Uzume and Choza were shocked by this, but Choza did mention this possibility beforehand to Uzume.]]
** Earlier on was [[spoiler: Yoh from the land of puppets]] who Neya though was the opposite gender, though since Yakuma was a doctor he knew right away.
* VillainTakesAnInterest: [[spoiler: Iriya decides that since Utsuho didn't kill him and believes that ''only'' they can truly understand each other, since they share similar ([[{{Foil}} but opposite]]) backstories, he ''really'' wants to be "friends" with him, no matter how much Utsuho hates him.]]
* VillainWithGoodPublicity: Gin Hobaku is revered by the people of Owari as a local hero who had rescued the Princess from bandits and used his strength and kindness to quell the unrest that has been plaguing the land since its feudal lord fell ill. He is actually a sociopathic Itsuwaribito who enjoys manipulating other people for his own amusement, before betraying and killing them once he's tired of them.
* VisualPun: Some of the animal based character designs are these, for example The emperor's servant Yagi is clearly a "stubborn old goat".
* VoluntaryShapeshifter: One of the powers of the tanuki (though Pochi is too young to be able to do it).
* XanatosGambit:
** Most of Utsuho's tricks involve [[FailureIsTheOnlyOption making it impossible for his opponent to make a right move.]] As an example, if he says that he has poisoned them, they can either ignore him and possibly die or believe him and play right into his hands.
** An omake strip features [[SchmuckBait Utsuho promising Dr. Yakuma ten ryo if he can do what Utsuho wrote on a card.]] If Utsuho wins, he gets all-he-can-eat dango. What is written on the paper? "Don't read this sentence.''
* WaifProphet: Minamo, the young seer who was rescued by Uzume and Choza while treasure hunting for Kuroha.
* WhenSheSmiles: [[spoiler: Kuroha]] gets this treatment surprisingly enough after they finally feel they can trust their comrades.
* WillNotTellALie:
** Dr. Yakuma tries to prove to Utsuho over and over that he can get by without lying.
** The old man keeps lecturing Utsuho about lying. [[spoiler: Though he himself sees nothing wrong with lying, he wants Utsuho to feel that there is nothing wrong with being honest so that Utsuho can stop blaming himself for the bandit attack.]]
* WouldHurtAChild: [[spoiler: Iriya]] and his group of bandits take this [[MoralEventHorizon to a bloody extreme.]]
* WolverineClaws: Choza's weapons are removable [[PoisonedWeapons poisoned claws]] that fit on his fingertips, which he typically covers with his long sleeves when he isn't fighting. Hikae also uses a more traditional set of hand claws, going with his beast motif.
* WretchedHive: Nadeshiko Island, being a place of exile for Itsuwaribito. Subverted when Neya and her group turn out to be decent.
* YouHaveFailedMe:
** The cross-dressing Itsuwaribito gets hit by this. Though it could have something to do with the fact that he was trying to kill Pochi, [[spoiler: and his boss happens to be a Talking Tanuki]].
** And later, ''all'' the Itsuwaribito working for [[spoiler: the tanuki]] get killed with a bomb.
* YourDaysAreNumbered: Minamo predits that [[spoiler: if Choza keeps traveling with Uzume he will die, though she does not know how or why]], but he ignores her warning. She does this again later saying [[spoiler: someone in Uzume's group was going to die if they go to the capital]] and once again [[CassandraTruth nobody takes her warning too seriously and continues to go there anyway]], though they are shown to worry about it a bit and [[spoiler: Choza]] wonders if it is connected to her earlier warning. Turns out [[spoiler: she was referring to the deaths of Kuroha and Saiha]].
