SpeechBubbles are graphic interpretations of characters' speech. Therefore, cartoonists show interruption or talking over another person's speech most conveniently by PaintingTheMedium -- specifically, obscuring a speech bubble with something.

Obscuring with another speech bubble means that the character is interrupted or drowned out by another. [[https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/interruption2.jpg Obscuring]] with {{Written Sound Effect}}s means the same for sounds. Sometimes a speech bubble may even be obscured with an object: Either this object produces loud and specific sounds that drown out the speech or the character stops talking immediately. Or perhaps it just shows that the other characters weren't listening.

The WallOfBlather uses this on WallOfText[=/=]{{Textplosion}} to indicate a "long lecture that no one listened to."

A form of [[OddShapedPanel odd-shaped]] speech bubble, and so a SubTrope of PaintingTheMedium, often used for CurseCutShort. When the speech bubble blocks ''something else'', it's SpeechBubbleCensoring. See also SoundEffectBleep.

[[folder:Anime & Manga]]
* ''Manga/SoulEater'':
** Excalibur is infamous for interrupting other characters' sentences with his own non-sensical speech, and his speech bubbles reflect this as well. A particularly notable example appears in the last chapter, where he obscures [[spoiler: most of Kid's mourning speech about his father.]]
** Black*Star provides another example when he fights Crona. When he starts screaming in response to Ragnarok's scream resonance, his screaming bubbles block out Ragnarok's scream bubbles.
* ''Manga/PokemonAdventures'' used this to avoid revealing Lady Berlitz's first name until the release of the game she'd be named after. (It turned out to be Platinum, after Platinum Version) Every time she'd introduce herself, it would be covered up by another character's speech.
* [[ButtMonkey Karen]] in ''Manga/MyMonsterSecret'' is an occasional victim of this, notably in her introduction chapters where her "demon" act falls apart and [[http://z.mfcdn.net/store/manga/12963/07-061.0/compressed/o006.jpg no one listens to her threats.]] More generally, the author seems to have become particularly fond of this trope in part 2 of the series. He even adds some variation, where ''out-of-bubble'' lines are interrupted (such as [[http://img.bato.to/comics/2016/02/18/j/read56c56db276bf2/img000020.png this scene]] or [[http://img.bato.to/comics/2016/04/14/j/read570f0a55acef5/img000008.png this scene]])
* Played for ''drama'' in the Episode 3 manga of ''VisualNovel/UminekoWhenTheyCry'', when Battler screams [[spoiler:to not hear the self-destructing [[LanguageOfTruth red truths]] that Beatrice delivers to eliminate the witch EVA (because he believes he has to discover these truths by himself).]]
* ''Manga/KaguyaSamaLoveIsWar'' has a single person example, when Kaguya gets so excited by Shirogane using the fan she gave him for his birthday that she can't properly focus on whatever her plan for the chapter was.
* ''Manga/BloomIntoYou'' has an unusual example that is not only PlayedForDrama, but involves a character cutting ''herself'' off. Yuu has Touko over, and learns that Touko [[spoiler:hates herself, and doesn't want Yuu to love her, since Touko can't love someone who loves what she hates]]. After Touko leaves, Yuu has a brief internal monologue in which she [[spoiler:more or less admits to loving Touko, and not wanting her to hate herself]], which Yuu interrupts by loudly calling Touko an idiot.
* In ''Manga/ShiNiAruki'', as Takahito accuses his adoptive younger sister Tokiko of killing his father and two of his siblings, his older sister Miyuki cuts him off, admonishing him for painting the teenager as a cursed and amoral DoomMagnet.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Comic Books]]
* It appeared in ''ComicBook/{{Empowered}}'' at least once. Searches needed.
* In ''ComicBook/TheTick'', when our hero first encounters the Chainsaw Vigilante, his [[InsistentTerminology nigh invulnerability]] gives CV some difficulty. CV's investigation is censored as follows...
-->'''CV:''' He has an upper arm of steel! I chin of steel! An elbow of steel! MY GOD! He has a...\
'''The Tick:''' HEY WATCH IT! (''The words are centered on his crotch'')\
'''CV:''' ...of steel!
* Invoked in ''ComicBook/AchilleTalon'', when the title character tries to explain the conception of a strip but gets a bubble saying "that text" glued onto his speech by an incompetent assistant. The entire end of the strip has him trying to speak while the glued bubble gets in the way of his text.
* In ''ComicBook/TheGreenLantern'', the Lanterns of the Multiverse are all reciting their oaths at once. Darkest Knight's speech bubble clips the edge of Magic Lantern's, covering the word beginning "sh" in the lines "When other Lanterns lose their sh-/We'll keep the Magic Lantern lit!"
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Comic Strips]]
* There was a ''ComicStrip/ForBetterOrForWorse'' strip that did this a few years ago, in which April cut off her friend Becky with an overlapping speech bubble when Becky referred to a mentally disabled character as a "retard".
* Played with, hilariously, with ''ComicStrip/GetFuzzy''. In order to make their lives "edgier," Bucky begins censoring Satchel by yelling ''beep'' over his speech bubbles. He even tries to use a little black box to cover up written swearwords. Of course, Satchel reveals he is trying to say, "oh sugar," but with Bucky ''beeping'' him, all you see ''oh s--." Rob ultimately stymies him by holding up a speech bubble out of Bucky's reach.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Literature]]
* In the ''Literature/HorribleHistories'' book ''The Awful Egyptians'', the narrator refers to the fact that at times, after great military victories, ancient Egyptians would gather the genitals from dead enemy soldiers and pile them up in public. In a caricature illustrating such a pile, a son says to his father, ''"Look at this huge pile of"'' '''"That's enough, son!"'''
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Video Games]]
* The Platform/PlayStation 1 ''Franchise/FinalFantasy'' games do this -- all three of them.
** In ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyVII'', Cloud interrupts Sephiroth's HannibalLecture with a flat "{{Shut up|Hannibal}}" that appears over Sephiroth's text box.
* ''VideoGame/ForgetMeNotMyOrganicGarden'': CameraAbuse covers up a swear, presumably:
--> '''Chika:''' Tch. You littl[ ]..
* Occurs in some of the [[SupplementalMaterial/TeamFortress2 supplemental]] comics for ''VideoGame/TeamFortress2''.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Webcomics]]
* Occurred in an ''Webcomic/EightBitTheater'' strip when Sarda put the team into yet another deathtrap airship.
-->'''Black Mage:''' You know what? Sarda can just go fu--
%%* ''Webcomic/{{Adventurers}}'' [[http://www.adventurers-comic.com/comics/adventurers20051004a.gif did that, also]].
* ''Webcomic/TheAdventuresOfDrMcNinja'' combines this with CurseCutShort: In earlier chapters, Doc's swears would be cut off by a {{Mook}} screaming, "HE SAID A BAD WORD!"
* ''Webcomic/ApricotCookies'': Cream interrupts Apricot like this before she can describe the 30 St. Mary Axe, presumably using someā€¦ inappropriate words.
%%* [[http://www.awkwardzombie.com/awkward-zombie/rubix-rubes This strip]] of ''Webcomic/AwkwardZombie'', last panel.
%%* [[http://booksdontworkhere.thecomicseries.com/comics/30 This Strip]] in ''Webcomic/BooksDontWorkHere''.
* ''Webcomic/{{Concerned}}'' has this in an early strip where Frohman introduces himself:
-->'''Citizen:''' The Sausage King of Chica-\
'''Frohman:''' No.
* ''Webcomic/DMOfTheRings'' uses this ''all the time'' because the characters continually interrupt the DM's monologues. There's also Gimli's CriticalFailure at diplomacy.
* In ''Webcomic/EarsForElves'', [[http://www.earsforelves.com/archives/230 Myari cuts off Tanna in this way]]. It fits with her hyperactive personality. Later, a VERY angry Tanna does this to Rolan [[http://www.earsforelves.com/archives/572 three times in one panel]].
* ''Webcomic/ElectricWonderland'': NJ and Trawn [[http://www.platypuscomix.net/electricwonderland/index.php?issue=3&page=1 interrupt]] the narrator sharing details the readers already learned (or ''should'' have learned) after reading the two previous comics.
%%* ''Webcomic/{{Footloose}}'' [[http://www.footloosecomic.com/footloose/pages.php?page=193 Nevermind the rules.]]
* ''Webcomic/TheFuzzyFive'':
** In [[http://www.fuzzyfive.com/2010/comic/22-sorry-to-burst-your-bubble/ this strip]] a villain '''pops''' Meredith's (thought) bubble.
** At the [[http://www.fuzzyfive.com/2011/comic/75-the-thrilling-conclusion-part-v/ end of the first storyline]], the box declaring the end obscures Nina Jr's assertion that no unseen force was going to interrupt them.
* ''Webcomic/GunnerkriggCourt'' does this at least twice: once when Zimmy is trying to say "Bastard" and has her bubble [[SoundEffectBleep cut off]] by [[WrittenSoundEffect the sound of thunder]], and another case when the "End Chapter" symbol cuts off Kat as she says, "What a bitch."
* Happens at least once in ''Webcomic/LittleDee''.
* The usually bubbling Claudia interrupts her mentor in [[http://m9girls.com/webcomic/en/2013/06/02/a-glimpse-into-darkness/ this panel]] of ''Webcomic/M9Girls''
%%* ''Webcomic/NipAndTuck'': [[http://www.rhjunior.com/NT/00003.html The details on why the rabbit has so many children.]]
%%* ''Webcomic/NobodyScores'' does this fairly often.
* In ''Webcomic/NoRestForTheWicked'', [[http://www.forthewicked.net/archive/04i-04.html the Boy interrupts Ricardo's explanation]] to ask [[IWasBeatenByAGirl if some girl beat him up.]]
%%* Doc Franken does this to Iggy on occasion in ''Webcomic/{{Nosfera}}''.
* ''Webcomic/TheOrderOfTheStick'': [[YouWannaGetSued "DON'T say it!]] [[http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0032.html It's trademarked."]]
%%* Happens in ''Webcomic/PennyArcade'' too many times to list.
%%* ''Webcomic/{{Precocious}}'':
%%Administrivia/WeblinksAreNotExamples** [[http://www.precociouscomic.com/archive/comic/2009/06/30 Here]]
%%** [[http://www.precociouscomic.com/archive/comic/2011/02/02 And here]]
%%* ''Webcomic/RustyAndCo'':
%%** [[http://rustyandco.com/comic/level-5-4/ Suppressing the villain's name.]]
%%** And [[http://rustyandco.com/comic/6/ summarizing]] the WallOfText.
* ''Webcomic/SchlockMercenary''. The "[[http://www.schlockmercenary.com/2002-07-29 blind date with a]]". And [[http://www.schlockmercenary.com/2002-08-23 here]]. Also, Schlock "[[http://www.schlockmercenary.com/2010-11-28 is like a giant child made of]]".
%%* In ''Webcomic/SequentialArt'' [[http://www.collectedcurios.com/sequentialart.php?s=127 interrupting a mean-spirited joke]].
* In ''WebComic/SluggyFreelance'' chapter 44, Torg accidentally gets affected by an emotion-enhancing psychotropic drug when he's kind of angry, making him so uncharacteristically angry he calls Gwynn a "hyper-violent four-eyed bitch." Presumably. The last word is obscured by Kiki jumping up holding a sign saying "BLEEP!" in front of it.
* [[http://www.somethingpositive.net/sp11252008.shtml This comic]] from ''Webcomic/SomethingPositive''. Creator/WilWheaton isn't interrupting Davan, but his SpeechBubble means [[TheUnreveal we don't find out whom Davan's addressing]].
%%* ''Webcomic/StringTheory2009'': [[http://www.stringtheorycomic.com/comics/chapterone/page-twentysix/ on a date]].
%%* ''Webcomic/ThistilMistilKistil'': [[http://tmkcomic.depleti.com/comic/ch01-pg21/ In context, you can even make out what was overwritten.]]
%%* ''Webcomic/TimesLikeThis'': A few examples:
%%** [[http://www.timeslikethis.com/comic/73 The first appearance]] of MediaNotes/JennyEverywhere.
%%** [[http://www.timeslikethis.com/comic/338 During Cassie's first in-person meetup with Philip.]]
%%** [[http://www.timeslikethis.com/comic/496 SHUT UP, PHILIP!]]
%%* As pictured in the ''Webcomic/VGCats'' panel above, Aeris shows us how to effectively cut off Leo's idiotic banter.
* ''Webcomic/SquidRow'' does it [[http://squidrowcomics.com/?p=3534 here]] when Randie's quip about "little woodland fairies" obscures B.B.'s full name.
* In ''Webcomic/{{Parallels}}'', [[http://www.mightymartianstudios.com/2013/03/12/parallels-sci-fi-webcomic-screamer/ a speech bubble breaks up a long-drawn out (bubble-less) scream.]]
%%* ''Webcomic/{{Comc}}'': [[https://sites.google.com/site/comccomic/archive/comc40 Here.]]
* In [[http://consolers.webcomic.ws/comics/pl/534216 this]] ''Webcomic/{{Consolers}}'' strip, some of Konami's text is part of a [[{{Pixellation}} pixeled-out]] square of the panel, [[DontExplainTheJoke as part of a joke about microtransactions]].
%%* Happens a couple of times on ''Webcomic/CaptainUfo''. For example, [[https://tapastic.com/episode/271392 here]] and [[https://tapastic.com/episode/358852 here]]
* ''Webcomic/SleeplessDomain'':
** In Chapter 3, [[https://www.sleeplessdomain.com/comic/chapter-3-page-21 while Undine is being attacked by a monster]], her InnerMonologue is interrupted by Heartful Punch's [[BigDamnHeroes dynamic entry]]:
--->'''Undine:''' But that's why... I can't die yet!! Not until I know what--\
'''Heartful Punch:''' '''''Hey Curls, get back!'''''
** Later, [[https://www.sleeplessdomain.com/comic/chapter-7-page-12 when the girls in the Training Club are splitting up to practice]], Harley grumbles about her training partner Bud trying to "push [her] s[[spoiler:[[ShipperOnDeck hip]]]]", but Bud cuts her off while pushing her out of the room:
--->'''Bud:''' oh don't worry it'll be the best let's go ol' buddy
* In ''Webcomic/StandStillStaySilent'', this is almost guaranteed to happen in Sigrun and Mikkel are in the same room. And the team's AwesomePersonnelCarrier only has so many rooms.
* ''Webcomic/TheWotch'': Kate and Jason [[https://www.thewotch.com/?comic=speaking-of-the-past discuss]] a past NoodleIncident, but what they say is covered by an EducationThroughPyrotechnics incident.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Web Original]]
* Some of Creator/{{Seanbaby}}'s articles for {{Website/Cracked}} do this, in conjunction with his irreverent, highly stylized writing. Such as in [[http://www.cracked.com/blog/man-comics/ "Man Comics: Number One Adventure Series Among Non-Pussies!"]] when Captain Marvel Jr. finally confronts The Punchmaster:
-->'''Captain Marvel Jr.''': The good citiz--'''''(PUNCH!)'''''[[spoiler:This spoiler tag is just her to better demonstrate how there's a huge speech bubble, but only the first two and a half words are in it and he's cut off by the sudden punch to the face.]]
