->''"You put your whole self into that laugh, don't you?"''
-->-- '''Marcia Jeffries''' to Lonesome Rhodes, ''Film/AFaceInTheCrowd''

There are some unique laughs that, when imitated by anyone, immediately bring to mind a single person. It may be an AnnoyingLaugh or an EvilLaugh, it may be the sounds/words used, its [[ContagiousLaughter tendency to catch on with anyone around]], or the fact that it's [[DissonantLaughter at a terribly inappropriate time]], but everyone knows who it's connected to. When this happens, this person has a Signature Laugh.

It doesn't count if it reminds you of a ''type'' of person (like the NoblewomansLaugh), nor just a ''type'' of laugh (like TheHyena). It must be an individual who springs immediately to mind when it's heard. Can overlap somewhat with VerbalTic.

Some of these sounds are difficult to translate onto a page, but when you hear them, you know.

Compare AnnoyingLaugh, EvilLaugh, LaughingMad.

[[folder:Advertising]]
* [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46azV0isnyc The Jolly Green Giant's]] musical "Ho ho ho!" Spelled the same as Santa's but very different.
* [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3J2jDQ9cOEsnyc The Pillsbury Doughboy's]] giggle in response to having his tummy poked.
* Chuck E. Cheese has a New Jersey-ish "Heheheheheh!"
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Anime & Manga]]
* ''Manga/The100GirlfriendsWhoReallyReallyReallyReallyReallyLoveYou'':
** Shizuka uses the phrase "She laughed aloud" with the text-to-speech app on her phone to indicate laughter on her part. Even in the middle of being ''tickled.''
** Implied with Ahko. Her reaction to Kusuri's laughing drug suggests that her catchphrase, "That sends me", is supposed to be her laughing. It's clearer in the original Japanese, where her catchphrase is instead slang for "lol".
* ''Anime/{{Aggretsuko}}'': Fenneko's extremely deadpan and bored-sounding [[https://youtu.be/5Oa2A09yHts?t=20s "hahahahahahahahaha"]] is a notable one; something about how dead it sounds makes it a pretty good {{Troll}} laugh.
* ''Manga/AssassinationClassroom'': Korosensei's amused, smug, or mocking chuckle is always rendereded as "Nurufufufufu~" and also appears in the anime, albeit sounding a bit more like "Nyeheheheheh~" due to his accent.
* Chiyo Mihama in ''Manga/AzumangaDaioh'' has a distinctly childish giggle, written in the manga as "Ehehehe!"
* ''Manga/BlackButler'': Tanaka's meek "Ho ho ho" is the only sound he makes while [[SuperDeformed in chibi mode.]]
* ''Manga/{{Bleach}}'' has Don Kanonji, whose signature is striking a pose and going, "BO-HA-HA-HA-HA!"
* Ryuk from ''Manga/DeathNote'': "Hyuk hyuk hyuk!" Light Yagami's typical EvilLaugh even became a MemeticMutation.
* ''Manga/DragonBall'':
** Goku's "hehehe" in the Japanese version. It becomes more pronounced in adulthood. In the English dub he's given a unique "hahaha" laugh.
** [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBQs-3c24AU Master Roshi]] has a laugh that you can recognize from a mile away.
** Frieza's distinctive "Oh ho ho ho ho!", closely resembling the NoblewomansLaugh.
* Kelly Yatsufusa from ''Literature/EtsusaBridge'', with her "Heehahahaha!".
* Early villain Everlue from ''Manga/FairyTail'' had a memorable laugh, "Boyoyoyoyo".
* In ''Anime/{{Gintama}}'', Sakamoto Tatsuma's laugh is very distinct, very frequent and (in-universe, at least) very, ''very'' [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yy1lUiuizHk annoying.]]
* Tsuruya from ''Literature/HaruhiSuzumiya''.
* ''Webcomic/HetaliaAxisPowers'':
** Prussia from has the rather unique "Kesesesesese".
** In the dub, France has "onhonhonhon", the stereotypical French laugh.
** Some fans use "kolkolkolkol" as Russia's laugh and "fusosososo" as Spain's laugh, but they are actually a MadnessMantra and a "cheer-up charm" respectively. Russia's actual [[StepfordSmiler "laugh"]] is [[GigglingVillain "ufufufu~"]] (or "uhuhuhu")
** America's "DDDDDDDD"... no, that's [[{{Emoticon}} not]] how it's actually pronounced. The anime/drama [=CD=]s just go with a loud rhythmic "Ha ha ha ha!"
** Poland has "WAHAHAHA!"
* ''Anime/HugttoPrettyCure'': Ranze Ichijo has an exaggerated NoblewomansLaugh: "OHHH-hohohohoho!". Upon first hearing it, Homare is surprised people still laugh like that.
* ''Literature/ICouldntBecomeAHeroSoIReluctantlyDecidedToGetAJob'': [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uAM4T8C91Lw Fino]]. Her laugh is [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=phXJ3BYG0Ak quite consistent]] too.
* ''Manga/JoJosBizarreAdventure'' has Gyro Zeppeli’s “Nyo-ho!”.
* ''Manga/{{Kinnikuman}}'': Ashuraman's "Ka ka ka ka ka" laugh is so deeply associated with him that it's featured in his VillainSong.
* ''Manga/KotaroLivesAlone'': Karino's editor, who has a permanently expressionless face and voice, has also a very flat and joyless "Hahahahaha" laugh that doubles as a catchphrase.
* Almost every major character in ''Manga/OnePiece'' has a unique laugh. Villains especially. [[http://onepiece.wikia.com/wiki/Laughter_Style Here is a list.]] Giants in particular always seem to have some incredibly strange laughs.
* ''Anime/PokemonTheSeries'': Due to how PokemonSpeak works, Haunter has what sounds like a [[MauriceChevalierAccent stereotypical nasal French laugh]].
* ''Anime/PuellaMagiMadokaMagica'': Kaname Madoka's Wehihihi is an onomatopoeia of that little giggle of hers. Japanese fanworks naturally follow this and literally write it as ウェヒヒヒヒ.
* Yotsuba Nakano in ''Manga/TheQuintessentialQuintuplets'' sometimes giggles "Shishishi" when she's up to something mischievous. Doubles as a pun since "Shi" is an AlternateCharacterReading for the number 4 in Japanese, and she's the fourth amongst her sisters.
* ''Manga/RanmaOneHalf'': Kodachi Kuno's (high-pitched in the anime) "ohohohohohohohoho". Her appearance is always accompanied or heralded with that laugh.
* ''Literature/ReincarnatedAsThePiggyDukeThisTimeImGonnaTellHerHowIFeel'': Fitting his title as "Piggy Duke", Slowe has a laugh that sounds like a pig oinking.
* In ''Anime/SamuraiSeven'' every time [[DeadpanSnarker Okara]] makes a snide comment she follows it with a SHSHSHSHSH hissing laugh
* Captain V2 Gundam from ''Anime/SDGundamWorldHeroes'' usually utters a proud-sounding "''Dooooaaaah-ha-ha-ha!''" in response to most situations.
* Kururu in ''Manga/SgtFrog'' has his signature "Ku ku ku ku" giggle. Hell, all of the Keronians do: Keroro = "Kerokerokero!", Giroro = "Girogirogiro!", Tamama = "Tamatamatama!".
* Kusukusu of ''Manga/ShugoChara'' has a distinctive laugh that sounds much like her MeaningfulName. In Japanese, kusukusu is onomatopoeia for giggling.
* In ''Anime/StrikeWitches'', Sakamoto Mio had a signature laugh in the first season, when she was played by Chiba Saeko (Ha! Ha! Ha!). In the second season, Chiba was unavailable to play the character, so she was played by Seto Saori, who didn't use the laugh.
* ''Anime/YuGiOh'': Weevil Underwood/Insector Haga's laugh is written as "Hyo hyo hyo!" in the manga and the video games.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Comic Books]]
* ''ComicBook/BlueBeetle'': Ted Kord always has his laughter written as "BWAH-HA-HA-HA" This laugh is so memorable that the entire ''ComicBook/JusticeLeagueInternational'' era is often referred to as the "Bwah-Ha-Ha Era".
* ''ComicBook/TheCreeper'': Some versions of the Creeper have their own unique laugh. Some of them [[BrownNote can drive a man mad.]]
* ''ComicBook/TheFlash'': [[Characters/TheFlashEobardThawne Eobard Thawne]] for whatever reason liked to go "Ha-haaa!" in his first appearance, every so often.
* ''ComicBook/{{Viz}}'': "Fnarr, Fnarr, Fnarr!" will forever be associated with the character Finbarr Saunders. Usually it was unleashed whenever he noticed a DoubleEntendre, however convoluted.
* ''ComicBook/WonderWoman [[ComicBook/WonderWoman1942 Volume 1]]'': Villain and misogynistic slave owner Uvo's "Ho-hoe!" laugh.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Fan Works]]
* ''Fanfic/ThisBites'': It's a ''One Piece'' fanfic, so this trope is very common.
** Noteworthy, however, in that [[SelfInsertFic Cross]] has one:
--->'''Cross:''' PFFFFHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
** As a VoiceChangeling, Soundbite has a lot of laughing styles, but his most common is a combination of 'Hee's, 'Hoo's, and 'Ha's.
** Lassoo's laugh is "Hweehweehwee", taken directly from Muttley of Wacky Races.
** Su's laugh is "Tseeheeheehee".
** [[spoiler: Dragon's is "Shishishishi"]], just like his son.
** [[spoiler: Hancock's]] is "Snahahaha".
** Monet's is "Yukeeheeheehee".
** [[spoiler: [[WhenSheSmiles When she laughs genuinely,]] Robin laughs just like Saul.]]
---> [[spoiler: '''Robin: ''' Dereshishishi!]]
* Another ''One Piece'' fanfic, ''Fanfic/TwelveRedLines'', gives her self-insert one of those:
-->'''Jones:''' Sesehihihi!
* ''Fanfic/PersonaTheSougawaFiles'':
** Tamiko Maeda, the group's MissionControl and resident {{Chuunibyou}}, has one: "Kuhuhuhuhuhu!"
** Both Shadow Rina and Shadow Ryouichi share "Ohohohohohoho!"
* ''Fanfic/OSMUFanfictionFriction'': Todd's EvilLaugh ("EEEHAHAHAHAHA!") is considered to be his signature one, but he doesn't take kindly to people asking him to "do the laugh".
--> '''Omar:''' Y'gotta hear this guy's villain laugh, it's ''so'' creepy...
--> '''Todd:''' ''[pointedly] It's just the way I laugh, okay?''
* As a nod to her appearance in the fairly wacky ''Rockman Zero'' manga, [[VideoGame/MegaManZero Leviathan]] in ''Fanfic/ManehattansLoneGuardian'' has "Kyahahahaha!" as her default laugh.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Films -- Live-Action]]
* Music/WolfgangAmadeusMozart's AnnoyingLaugh in ''Film/{{Amadeus}}'' announces his presence whenever he's in the area.
%%* Dr. Evil from ''Film/AustinPowers''. %%No context
* ''Film/BeverlyHillsCop'': [[Creator/EddieMurphy Axel Foley]] has a distinctive "Hee-Haw" donkey-like laugh, to the point where it was featured in the promos.
* Sid James's dirty laugh was a staple of the ''Film/CarryOn'' films.
* Creator/MauriceChevalier's iconic "hon hon hon" laugh, which has become the standard way French FunnyForeigner people laugh in comedy.
* [[{{Slimeball}} Harry Ellis]] in ''Film/DieHard'' only laughs once, but it's a drawn-out laugh that fits his yuppie personality.
* Renfield, as played by Creator/DwightFrye in ''Film/{{Dracula|1931}}'', has a distinctive slow, whining [[LaughingMad mad laugh]]. It introduces him from offscreen during his first mad scene, and then continues to reappear throughout the film.
* In ''Film/AFaceInTheCrowd'', Lonesome Rhodes rides to fame on his signature "Haw. Haw. Haw." laugh.
* Brought up in ''Film/TheGreatRace'' when [[HarmlessVillain Professor Fate]] is told to change his laugh to match that of the [[IdenticalStranger prince he's impersonating]].
* In the Sky One adaptation of ''Film/{{Hogfather}}'', when Death briefly takes the role of the absent Hogfather (the Disc's Santa Claus), he... it's ''from'' the book but instead of the novel's not-quite-getting-it deadpan ([[AC:Ho. Ho. Ho.]]) he tries to play along with "Ho ho ho" but always delivers an [[AcCENTupONthewrongsylLAble oddly-stressed]] "HO hoho!" [[spoiler:The scene is kept, like most of the book, when he surprises the Auditors from inside a snowman and, as the last thought in an ultimatum, he sarcastically ponders, "[[AC:Have you been naughty... or nice? Ho. Ho. Ho.]]"]]
* Creator/ChristopherLambert seems to have a signature laugh across multiple characters. As Connor Macleod (of clan Macleod) from ''Film/{{Highlander}}'', he frequently used a dry, raspy "heheheh" sort of laugh, and then later used the same laugh as Lord Rayden in ''Film/MortalKombatTheMovie''.
* Pee-wee Herman has a distinctive, loud, somewhat barking laugh. Sometimes it comes out as a quick giggle, like "Heh Heh!" and sometimes it's longer.
* Louis' honking laugh from ''Film/RevengeOfTheNerds''. His father laughs the same way.
* Tommy's signature "haha" from ''Film/TheRoom2003''. Often used at inappropriate times.
* ''Film/StarWarsReturnOfTheJedi'':
** Jabba the Hutt's slow, low-pitched EvilLaugh. A blinded Han Solo easily recognizes it. And right next to him, Salacious Crumb has a high-pitched AnnoyingLaugh.
** Emperor Palpatine's EvilLaugh is distinct enough that the first trailer for ''Film/TheRiseOfSkywalker'' could end with it ''without'' showing Palpatine himself, and fans could still instantly recognize it as him.
* ''Film/TheThreeStooges'': Curly's "Nyuk-Nyuk-Nyuk"
* Creator/JohnWayne, in many of his roles. "Dah-Haa, dah-haaa, da-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!"
** ''Film/TheSearchers'' also has Charlie [=McCorry=] and his drawn-out, derisive "haw-haw-haw".
* The Witch of the West in ''Film/TheWizardOfOz‘’ has a perfectly witchy sounding cackle.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Literature]]
* In ''Literature/HarryPotter'', Sirius Black was often mentioned to have a laugh that sounded like a bark. Given his name and Animagus form as a large black dog, it seems quite fitting.
* ''Literature/TheMentalState'' has Zack State, who quietly chuckles to himself in private whenever one of his plans works, immediately followed by a serious scowl.
-->'''Zack:''' Heh! Hih! Hih! [Scowl]
* Creator/TerryPratchett seems to love these:
** "Hat. Hat. Hat." from Mr. Cletes

** The Death of Rats and his [[AC:"Snh-Snh-Snh"]].

[[/folder]]

[[folder:Live-Action TV]]
* Barney from ''Series/BarneyAndFriends'' has a deep sounding chuckle... very similar to Santa, but a little more rapid.
* ''Series/{{Batman|1966}}'' featured notable ones from several villains:
** Creator/FrankGorshin's manic giggle as the Riddler is well known enough that it was one of the elements Creator/JimCarrey brought to his performance in ''Film/BatmanForever''.
** Creator/BurgessMeredith's squawking "waugh waugh waugh" laugh as the Penguin was partially a case of EnforcedMethodActing, as Meredith had quit smoking in real life, and the cigarettes he had to have with him as Penguin irritated his throat.
* ''Series/TheBernieMacShow'': Jordan's nasally crackle: "Hee-hee-hee!"
* Sheldon Cooper in ''Series/TheBigBangTheory''. His very fake-seeming laugh is more of a brief bout of hyperventilation, and underscores his [[TheComicallySerious general lack of humor]].
* It's rare to get a laugh out of Rosa Diaz in ''Series/BrooklynNineNine'', though Captain Holt seems to be the best at it with his insults about Wuntch, but when it does happen, her laugh sounds rather like a [[https://youtu.be/Fi98-2DLh20?si=Orlb5ee5Pr-rK2WB&t=51 witch's cackle.]]
* Hazel Swearington of ''Series/{{Bunkd}}'' has a mocking and sarcastic laugh ("''HA''-HA!"), usually whenever she's playing a mean trick on the Rosses.
* ''Series/{{Cheers}}:'' Diane has a particular laugh which sounds either forced or like she's on the verge of breaking into tears. In her appearance in ''Frasier'', it actually does lead into a spectacular sobbing fit.
* Vince Masuka from ''Series/{{Dexter}}'' does a Beavis and Butthead style laugh whenever he or someone else makes a double entendre.
* The Fourth Doctor in ''Series/DoctorWho'' has a really distinctive, booming, rather sinister laugh that ''Who'' fans just love doing impressions of.
* Steve Urkel in ''Series/FamilyMatters'' snorted whenever he laughed.

* Jerry Ledbetter on the Britcom ''Series/TheGoodLife'' deploys a sardonic snicker.

* Tim Allen's grunting laugh from ''Series/HomeImprovement'', which came from his standup routine).

* Moss uses this trope in ''Series/TheITCrowd'' when acting as dungeon master for a game of ''TabletopGame/DungeonsAndDragons''. He announces that the players see a familiar face emerge from a crowd, then, as the character, gives a distinctive "Ho ho ho!" The players all recognize the laugh and shout the character's name.
* Kuroto Dan's [[FountainOfMemes memetic]] '''BWE-HE-HE''' in ''Series/KamenRiderExAid'' as demonstrated in an [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0toLEXg291U early trailer]] for the sequel movie trilogy Kamen Ex-Aid: Another Ending. [[ChewingTheScenery Scenery chewing]] and [[PutTheLaughterInSlaughter carnage]] usually follows.
* Speaking of Penny Marshall, Laverne De Fazio from ''Series/LaverneAndShirley'' has a rather annoying nasal laugh, though it doesn't come out as often.
* ''Series/{{MASH}}'': Hawkeye Pierce has a unique, whooping "WHOO-HOO-HOO-HAHAHAHA" laugh whenever something ''really'' funny and unexpected happens, such as [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekW0082iqfg Henry Blake getting a faceful of soot]].
* Creator/RikMayall's characters all share the same over-the-top nervous laugh.
* ''Series/TheNanny'': Creator/FranDrescher's nasal, snorting laugh.

* In ''Series/HellKitchen'', Season 12 contestant Rochelle had an adorable giggle that was her CharacterTic which, she notes in her EstablishingCharacterMoment, was when she was either nervous or excited. 186* French singer Henri Salvador had a very unique and amusing laugh. He even worked it into many of his musical singles.

* ''Radio/BleakExpectations:'' Mr. Benevolent's not exactly evil sounding EvilLaugh. It's more of an Evil Chuckle, but there's no mistaking it, since he does it OnceAnEpisode.

* Carolina Bermudez (of ''Elvis Duran and the Morning Zoo'') has a quite a distinctive laugh, a "Ha ha ha ha!" that is almost like a fusion of an evil cackle and [[NightmareRetardant Elmo's]] [[Series/SesameStreet laugh]].
* The Great Gildersleeve... Again, impossible to spell out. Also crosses over to LiveActionTV.
* Sublieutenant Phillips' 'silly-ass' laugh in ''Radio/TheNavyLark'' (usually at his own jokes). Most of the other characters find it irritating, especially Captain Povey.

[[/folder]]
