->"Oh no! My hair's in a mess. Ah -- but it always looks like this."
-->-- Gold, Manga/PokemonAdventures

Specific case of AnimeHair, that happens often in Shonen series. One or more of the characters, usually a protagonist, have a specific hairstyle -- their hair is always a mess, sticks out on all sides, and often looks kind of Hair. This hairstyle often comes with Hot Bloodedness and/or a nature somewhere between rebel, free spirit and ChaoticGood. Somebody could assume it's supposed to symbolize the hero's disrespect for existing rules. Or his dislike for hairdressers. Generally, it looks like our hero doesn't put any effort in his hairstyle and just goes as they are.

This is the kind of hairstyle that people suffering from PublicMediumIgnorance think all male anime characters have. The DistaffCounterpart stereotype for female anime characters can be GirlishPigtails.

!!Examples:

%% * Iki from Manga/AirGear.
* Manga/BladeOfTheImmortal: Despite being fairly realistic and featuring normal haircuts for almost all of the main and supporting characters, AntiVillain Magatsu Taito looks like he's carrying a porcupine on his head. We're talking foot-long spikes. It doesn't go unnoticed. At one point, somebody mentions InUniverse that hair like that will be popular in a couple hundred years.
* Manga/Bakuman: Orihara Ichiriki, one of Mashiro's assistants, has messy spiked hair. A bit of a NonStandardCharacterDesign, as he looks like he comes from a HotBlooded, action-y shonen manga while Bakuman is a more realistic series. Of course, Bakuman has plenty of hot-bloodedness anyway, so he doesn;t look too out of place.
* Manga/Bleach
%% ** Ichigo Kurosaki, the Espada Grimmjow Jaggerjack...
** Captain Kenpachi Zaraki of Squad 11 in a rare case actually styles his hair like that instead of the usual case of it just being so.
** Averted with other characters. Nnoitora Giruga is just as confrontational, but has neat, straight hair - closer in style to Ishida than Ichigo. In addition, when Grimmjow releases, his hair actually gets straighter (probably due to becoming longer.) Conversely, Hitsugaya's hair is a lot like this, but he's a rather serious character who usually isn't quick to fight.
* Manga/BusoRenkin: Kazuki Muto has the typical spiky brown hair of a StockShonenHero with the addition of a lighter streak at the front and a strange M-shaped section that looks like there's a misshapen pair of Triangle Shades sticking out of his head. His KidFromTheFuture, from the Japan-only video game, has similar hair.
%% * Literature/ACertainMagicalIndex: Touma Kamijou. In a bit of a subversion, Touma actually deliberately styles it that way with hair gel.
* Manga/ChronoCrusade: Joshua Christopher, although it's much more toned down than some of the other examples on this page. (He fits the personality for this trope.) Chrono might count, too, although he's got a long braid at the base of his neck in addition to the spiky hair on his head.
* Anime/CowboyBebop: Spike Spiegel has hair that sticks out all over the place, but it's more curly than spiky. (Faye at one point describes it as "fluffy".) Ed has the more stereotypical spiky hair.
* Manga/DNAngel: Almost all of the male cast. Particularly notable because this is a shojo manga, not shounen (although it certainly mixes in tropes from that genre).
* Franchise/Digimon: At least one kid from each series, usually the protagonist, who'll be hot-headed and immature, and also wear useless goggles. In Anime/DigimonTamers however, it's Rika that sports this kind of hair and hot-headed personality, while the others have hairstyles more plausible in reality.
* Franchise/DragonBall: The Saiyans have Shonen Hair as a genetic trait to the point that a pure-blooded Saiyan's hair never changes from the day they're born. All too fitting for a barbaric race of space-faring cavemen.
%% * Anime/DuelMasters: Shobu Kirifuda.
%% * Manga/Eyeshield21: Several characters have hair like this, including Sena, Monta and Hiruma. The series lampshades the trope: Sena's hair is a cross between Goku's and Astro Boy's. Sena looks exactly like Astro Boy with his hair gelled down and his dad has the same hairdo. Hiruma actually has normal hair but styles his hair this way to add to his rebellious image. As for Monta, he's simply copying the hairstyle of his hero, who has a less cartoony version of the haircut.
* Manga/FairyTail: Natsu, Gray, and Gajeel all have this hairstyle. However, whenever Natsu is in the middle of a hard battle, his bangs go down because of the damage he takes. During the Tenro Island arc, he even uses his Fire Dragon Slayer Magic to heat up his hands to style his hair to its usual style.
%% * Manga/FushigiYuugi: Tamahome and Tasuki, as opposed to just about everyone else.
%% * Anime/FutureGPXCyberFormula: Hayato Kazami, Naoki Shinjyo and Johji Ohtomo have these. Hayato's is more noticeable, and it gets bigger in the last 2 [=OVAs=].
%% * Manga/GetBackers: A lot of characters, most notably the two protagonists, and especially Ban (though being drenched leads to his hair becoming completely tamed... for a while).
%% * Manga/Hamlet has this.
%% * Franchise/KagerouProject: Shintaro, Hibiya, Seto and (to a lesser extent) Haruka all have this. In Shintaro and Haruka's cases, it's Lampshaded .
* Anime/KillLaKill: Sanageyama's hair seems to get more spiky with every new iteration of his uniform. By the time he gets to wearing Blade Regalia: Secret Unsealed, he's practically a Saiyan.
%% * Manga/JoJosBizarreAdventure
%% ** Jotaro Kujo is revealed to have this when he loses his cap.
%% ** An even better example is Joseph Joestar, his grandfather. When he was young, that is.
%% * Both Tetsuya Tsurugi and Kouji Kabuto from Anime/MazingerZ and Anime/GreatMazinger.
%% * Ken and Ryo from Anime/MazinkaiserSKL.
* Manga/MyHeroAcademia:
** Both protagonist Midoriya and deuteragonist Bakugo have typical messy shonen hair, but in different styles that reflect their personalities. Midoriya, being friendlier, has softer, more wavy-looking hair, while the more aggressive, HotBlooded Bakugo has more stiff, jagged SpikyHair (that also fits with his ability to generate explosions.)
** Side character-turned-BreakoutCharacter Kirishima has spiky red hair that rivals both Midoriya's and Bakugo's hairstyles, and it fits his HotBlooded, manliness-obsessed personality. However, it's actually invoked since he dyes his hair red (his natural hair color is black) and uses gel to spike it up. It's part of his effort to reinvent himself as a "manlier", more courageous person than he was back in middle school.
* Franchise/Naruto:
** Naruto has had spiky hair his entire life because he was born with it. He inherited it from his father. As an adult, Naruto cuts his hair short, but it still naturally spikes up.
** Naruto's son Boruto in Manga/Boruto inherited his naturally spiky hair.
** Kiba has had spiky hair his entire life. As an adult, he ends up combing it back.
* Manga/OuranHighSchoolHostClub: The Hitachiin twins. Seems to be intentionally invoked by the twins -- flashbacks show that before they joined the Host Club they had identical bowl cuts instead of the wild, spiky haircuts they have in present day, and they're considered the "Devil" type in the host club and are supposed to be a little wild. It's more obvious in the anime. In the manga, their hair looks much more natural and isn't quite as poofed out, although it's obvious they usually style it with hair gel.
* Anime/PanzerWorldGalient: Jordy Volder has messy, spiky, blonde hair.
* Anime/PokemonTheSeries: Loads of hot-blooded characters have messy, spiky hair, from Gary "Motherfucking" Oak to Ritchie to Cameron. Ash Ketchum is the most obvious, being the StockShonenHero of the showuntil Anime/PokemonHorizonsTheSeries replaced him with Liko and Roy and having jet-black, spiky hair jutting out from all sides of his head (most of which are hidden by his hat). There's even a popular icon that has a picture of Ash Ketchum, stating that "His hair can poke people's eyes out".
%% * Manga/Pretear: Goh and Mannen.
* Anime/PrettyCure
** Anime/SuitePrettyCure: Side character Waon Nishijima has blue shonen hair. Fittingly, she's a tomboy who's into sports.
** Anime/SmilePrettyCure: Reika/Cure Beauty gains spiky hair in Princess Form, making her look like a Manga/SaintSeiya character. The irony is that she's the YamatoNadeshiko of the five Cures, while the two tomboys get more traditionally feminine hair in their own Princess Forms.
* Manga/RosarioPlusVampire: Tsukune has shonen hair, but thanks to ArtEvolution, his hair looks more normal and straighter in later chapters of Season II.
* Manga/RurouniKenshin: In the author's notes, Creator/NobuhiroWatsuki explicitly mentions that Yahiko's character design is that of the archetypical wild-haired Shonen Protagonist, and Sano's hair is so crazy he gets called "Rooster-head" InUniverse. (Interestingly enough, as the series progresses, Kenshin's hair grows progressively less wild. ArtShift that doubles as a sign of CharacterDevelopment!)
%% * Darren has this in the manga adaptation of Literature/TheSagaOfDarrenShan, at least when he's not bald.
* AudioPlay/SaintBeast: Unlike most of his counterparts who have unnatural hair colours, Goh just gets a very spiky haircut.
* Manga/SaintSeiya: Most protagonists and villains. Seiya's helmet seems to have trouble keeping his hair's spikes from jutting out. The villains tend to combine shonen hair with long hair for maximum fabulousness.
* Anime/SamuraiChamploo: Mugen has wild hair that sticks out all around his head. He has a similarly wild personality.
%% * Manga/SoulEater: Soul and Blackā˜†Star.
%% * Anime/Superbook: Chris.
%% * Anime/TengenToppaGurrenLagann - while Kamina's hair is this trope played straight, Simon is an interesting example - his hairstyle becomes more and more like this each time he Takes a Level in Badass.
%% * VisualNovel/UminekoWhenTheyCry: Battler Ushiromiya, despite the fact that it's not a shonen.
%% * Main character from Manga/Yaiba.
* Parodied in one episode of Anime/YokaiWatch. Eddie says that "static hair" is the new trend amongst boys. Nate (who already has spiky hair) and his friends try to make their hair spiky after they overhear Katie saying she likes boys with that hairstyle:
-->Eddie: Yeah, the static boys are way in--Boys who are so charged up with static electricity that their hair stands on end.\
Nate: What?\
Bear: That's both idiotic and uncomfortable.
* Franchise/YuGiOh:
** Yugi/Yami from the original Manga/YuGiOh series (including the two animated series) is one of the most iconic examples, with a huge Afro-like explosion of multicolored hair crowning his head. Parodied in one of the Creator/KidsWB ads for the anime, which describes the hairdo as consisting of "aerodynamic triangles" useful for weathering the shockwaves that invariably accompany Duel Monster attacks and destruction.
%% ** GX has many of them - Chazz, Syrus, Adrian and Jim to name a few. Protagonist Jaden actually averts this with a hairstyle that's plausible in real life.
** 5D's - Yusei, possibly one man with weirder hairstyle than Yugi. Jack keeps boasting that he's a King, and then take into account his hair looks like a crown.
%% ** And then Zexals Yuma manages to completely out-crazy pretty much every hairstyle in the series [[spoiler:- and that's before he enters SuperMode!]]
* Manga/YuYuHakusho: Hiei has this to a T. He looks like an emo Super-Saiyan.
%% * Another Jin, this time from Anime/ZettaiMutekiRaijinOh, has this. Apart from his two other classmates Akira and Yoppa, the rest of the main cast sport more or less normal hairstyles.

* Wolverine from the ComicBook/XMen; he is generally portrayed with particularly feral hair and sideburns that look a bit like horns, especially in earlier renderings.
%% * ComicBook/MarvelComics was portrayed with something similar until he turned into a cat.

* ComicStrip/CalvinAndHobbes: Eternally scruffy and hyperactive Calvin.

* Fanfic/WedFlyAwayTogether: Lampshaded when Tara makes fun of the spiky haircut Dick had as Robin. She says that he could have poked someone if he'd charged at him like a buffalo.

* Sanjay from WesternAnimation/TheBookOfLife, has 4 spikes that make his hairstyle.
* Hiro Hamada from WesternAnimation/BigHero6 has what could best be described as what happens when Disney does ShonenHair (to go with its anime-inspirations). His hair is spiky and messy, but in his case it's been confirmed that he styles it that way.

%%
%% * The title character in Film/CecilBDemented has total ShonenHair.
%% * Peter Parker has hair like this in Film/TheAmazingSpiderMan.
%%

%%
%% * Briskir from Literature/Halvgudene has this.
%% * Literature/HarryPotter was described as having this kind of hair, which the movies ignored.
%%

%%
%% * Sosuke of Series/EngineSentaiGoOnger. Lampshaded in a behind-the-scenes blog pic when someone holds up a Saiyan Goku figure beside him.
%% * Beakman sported a 'do that was basically a Shonen interpretation of EinsteinHair.
%%

%%
%% * The Music/Vocaloid character Kagamine Len has this kind of hairstyle, although fanart tends to tone it down.
%%

%% * The Franchise/FinalFantasy series is rife with them:
%% ** VideoGame/FinalFantasyIs Fighter class;
%% ** VideoGame/FinalFantasyIVs Cecil (as a paladin) in sprite form, he's a LongHairedPrettyBoy otherwise, Edge in all forms.
%% ** VideoGame/FinalFantasyVs Bartz
%% ** Cloud Strife of VideoGame/FinalFantasyVII;
%% ** VideoGame/FinalFantasyIXs Zidane;
%% ** VideoGame/FinalFantasyXs Tidus.
%% * Franchise/KingdomHearts:
%% ** Roxas and Sora.
%% ** And, conversely, Ventus and .
%% ** Heck, Sora even acknowledged himself with one when Tifa asked him about Cloud's whereabouts!
* Crono, the hot-headed hero of VideoGame/ChronoTrigger. Though considering he was designed by Akira Toriyama, this is pretty much a given.
-->"Where's the punk with the spiky-hair?"
* The preview male sprite from the Japanese Creator/SquareEnix Members would have this when he dresses up as Sorbet from Dive II Hunt, which means Sorbet might have ShonenHair himself.
* A number of characters from VideoGame/SengokuBasara, particularly Sanada Yukimura (who also has a ponytail). Date Masamune is an odd case in that, while his hair is normally rather tame, it seems to magically spike out under his helmet. Static cling, maybe?
%% * Neku Sakuraba from VideoGame/TheWorldEndsWithYou
%% * Every VideoGame/GoldenSun character either has this or IdiotHair.
* For the most part, the characters from the VideoGame/Tekken series have relatively normal hairstyles. However, Lars Alexandersson fits this trope to a tee, with a dash of Sentai. Special mention goes out to the Mishima clan, as well.
%% * VideoGame/RetroCityRampage has this as a hairstyle called The Weaboo.
* VideoGame/KingdomOfLoathing, parodying Franchise/FinalFantasy:
** The Protagonist has spiky hair. As a justifying drop, his super-spiky hair gel gives this effect to the player: "Your hair is seriously spiky. It looks good, and it could put an eye out -- the eye of your foe." A specific Protagonist appears as a Quest NPC: Wangst Mist Angst.
** His Burly Sidekick also has a spiky mohawk sharp enough to weaponize.
%% * Many Franchise/Pokemon characters. It's so noticeable with the male protagonists that it becomes terribly noticeable when the VideoGame/PokemonXY protagonist doesn't have AnimeHair of any sort.
%% * Male VideoGame/Fossil Fighters protagonists.
* In Videogame/Overwatch, some of Genji's Legendary Skins show that in the past he had fairly spiky hair prior to becoming a cyborg.
%%* The appropriately named Hiro from Videogame/LunarEternalBlue sports this hairstyle.
* VideoGame/DragonQuestV: The hair of reckless, cheerful eight-year-old Parry Gotha is a mass of big, spiky bangs which makes look quite a bit like Son Gohan, another character created by Akira Toriyama.

* VisualNovel/YoJinBo has Jin, whose hair is extremely messy. He's a FieryRedhead, though, so we can forgive him for forgetting to brush it occasionally.
* Nick "Phoenix" Wright from VisualNovel/AceAttorney has what can only be described as the standard spikey 'do rotated 90 degrees backwards, giving him a look of perpetually being in a wind tunnel. Apollo Justice, on the other hand, has much more natural hair, aside from a pair of stubborn cowlicks.

%%
%% * Jeff, in the EasterEgg of WebAnimation/BowsersKingdom episode 8, gains this when he ate the Chaos Emerald and fights Turbo Mecha Sonic on an even level.
%%

%% * Karkat (and John to a degree) of both sport this style.
* Isaac from Webcomic/Paranatural has hair like this, which is "spiky all on its own."
--> Isaac: Don't laugh, it's serious. Like, what am I gonna do when this hairstyle goes out of fashion?
* Rick from Webcomic/LuminaryChildren counts.
* Hikaru from Webcomic/Blitzcrafter has a haircut that consists of three to four back spikes that are sometimes drawn as big as their face, three frontal spikes, and a spiky ponytail. Yeah.

* The WesternAnimation/TeenTitans version of Robin. Some episodes lampshade and parody this trope:
** In "Mother Mae-Eye", Robin is shown styling his hair. In "Divide and Conquer", during an argument with Cyborg, the latter points out that he stinks of hair gel.
** In "Date with Destiny", after being yelled at by Starfire, his hair turns into what seems to be its natural state - a "good boy" style. Also a MythologyGag; it looks exactly like how Robin's hair was drawn in the Golden/Silver Age comics.
** On another occasion, he gets drenched, and swipes his hand over his hair in a blur, and it is promptly restored to its standard form: bing!
%% * Kenny from WesternAnimation/SouthPark has blond ShonenHair, although we rarely get to see it.
* The Rowdyruff Boys sport this after Him brings them back to life, which the Girls immediately mock them for (calling it "mean hair").
%% * Compared to her friends, WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagics Rainbow Dash's hair certainly has shades of this. It helps that she's the most tomboyish of all the main characters.
