This is a specific type of s that uses the shift from day to night as its trigger.
This is particularly common with modern depictions of werewolves, since being cursed to transform into a wolf-monster one day of the month doesn't seem like much of a curse. If a character has this sort of transformation, you can usually expect it to be mystical in nature, tied to the ancient perception of night as a fundamentally different time than day (rather than, you know, cosmic objects being in different positions). If not, then it might be a form of therianthropy based on a nocturnal animal, like the aforementioned wolves.

Technically speaking, any being that transforms as a result of the full moon could also be said to fit this description in a literal sense, but they are Not Examples as the night isn't the catalyst in those cases.

Compare and contrast NiceDayDeadlyNight, which is when places rather than people become more dangerous at night.

* The commercial for VideoGame/NeedForSpeedUnderground shows someone locking their stock looking Nissan Sentra in a garage as night falls. Then the car starts to develop a body kit with custom hood and spoiler while the paint job turns into something more elaborate. Basically, it looks like the car just underwent the game's customization system.

* Manga/Inuyasha has the Youkai half-demon Gyu-oh. While the other half-demons look strange and keep their looks all the time, Gyu-oh is a pure human during the day and a pure bull youkai at night. Over time, these changes have driven him insane.
* The premise of Anime/MidnightHorrorSchool is this. Every midnight, a group of seemingly normal inanimate objects transform into sentient beings.
* In Anime/PrincessMononoke, the Forest Spirit transforms from his deer-like form in the day to the gigantic Night Stalker at night.
* Inverted with Escanor from Manga/TheSevenDeadlySins. Strong and muscular during the day, he can even defeat demons with ease, presenting a real challenge to his fellow combatants. However, at night he is small, thin and very shy.

* In the ComicBook/BuffyTheVampireSlayer comics, a new breed of vampires emerges, which are not only much stronger than the old vampires, but also immune to daylight. And they can change their shape at night. It is a voluntary change of form, but they can only do it at night. Two of them, Vicki and Trevor, like the form of a giant bat.
* ComicBook/GhostRider originally transformed like this at night before Retcons enabled him to bring the s out more often.
* ComicBook/TheIncredibleHulk originally used this as the cause for his transformation, before the more well-known anger cause was fully established. Several Hulk personas like Grey Hulk (Joe Fixit) and the ComicBook/ImmortalHulk also use it, to hearken back to the character's roots. The reasons have never been explored much, but regardless, the night is his time.
* In Creator/MarvelKnights: Millenial Visions, the ComicBook/WerewolfByNight has an alternate version whose transformation into his werewolf form works like this, in contrast to the Prime Marvel Universe version who is either a VoluntaryShapeshifter who loses control under the full moon or a typical werewolf who only did transform with a full moon.
* ComicBook/Superman:
** Lar-On, a Kryptonian werewolf who first appeared in World's Finest #256 and was also a regular in the ComicBook/SupergirlRebirth series. Lar-On automatically and unwillingly changed shape at night until he learned how to control his transformation.
** One of the storylines in the first issue of Superman's Girlfriend, Lois Lane has an offscreen example with a legend about a girl named Molly Todd who became a hag named Mad Molly every night. Lois is cursed to suffer the same curse after she breaks a mirror in the presence of Molly's picture, providing the impetus for the story. spoiler: It then turns out that, actually, she was just turning older at night because of a failed youth serum. Any supernatural feats were only Superman letting her think she had gained powers until the serum wore off.
* In an issue of the German comic series ComicBook/GespensterGeschichten (Ghost Stories), an evil scientist tests a longevity potion on some ephemera. When they are still alive the next day, he sees his research confirmed and drinks the potion himself. Little did he know, however, that the mayflies turned into large monsters at night as a side effect. As night falls, he also transforms and is immediately shot by the police.
** Another issue shows an abandoned pirate island in the Caribbean. Five dogs live there together and roam the deserted island during the day. At night, however, the dogs merge and become a giant hydra with dog heads. A group of pirates find out the hard way that this island is avoided for a good reason.

* As mentioned above, some versions of werewolves. For instance, in certain regions of Brazil werewolves are said to transform at midnight on Fridays.
* The Creator/BrothersGrimm story "Literature/TheSingingSpringingLark" basically begins like "Literature/BeautyAndTheBeast," with the Beast switched out for a talking lion. Once "Beauty" winds up at his castle, however, we learn that he's a cursed prince, and he and all his people turn back into humans at night. This simples up the romance nicely, and they're quickly married. (There are a bunch of other random clauses to his curse, however, which take up the rest of the story.)

* In WesternAnimation/Shrek1, [[spoiler:Princess Fiona is under a curse where she changes from a human to an ogre when the sun goes down. She's very self-conscious about her appearance, so when Donkey finds out, she makes him promise not to tell Shrek. Near the end of the movie, Shrek finds out about the curse, but since he is an actual ogre, he thinks Fiona is beautiful in her ogre form. He marries her, and as a result, Fiona remains an ogre for the rest of her life]].

* Film/Ladyhawke: Isabeau and Navarre have been cursed by the villain so that she's a hawk during the day and he's a wolf during the night, so that they're never human at the same time.
* Played with in Film/PiratesOfTheCaribbeanTheCurseOfTheBlackPearl: the titular curse is in effect all the time but at night, specifically under the light of the moon, the cursed pirates are revealed to be walking skeletons, while they look human the rest of the time.

* Creator/NKJemisin's Literature/InheritanceTrilogy: In The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, the GodOfDarkness Nahadoth is enslaved and can only exist in his divine form at night. By day, he's an ordinary human with no memory of his true self.
* Invoked in the story of Sir Gawain and Lady Ragnelle. Lady Ragnelle was cursed to be hideous but upon marrying Gawain, the curse was half-broken. Ragnelle said that she would either be beautiful during the day and hideous at night, or hideous during the day and beautiful at night, and Gawain had to choose. Ultimately averted because Gawain allowed her to choose, breaking the curse completely.
* In Literature/SeptimusHeap, Ullr transforms from a cute little cat in the daytime to a huge panther at night.
* In the German book series Literature/Maerchenmond a creature appears that is described as a were animal. It is an animal the size of a dog or a sheep and can talk. During the day it has fur and is probably some kind of mammal, but at night it turns into some kind of reptile. It can see well in the dark in its nocturnal form, but its personality does not change.
* Literature/MoongobbleAndMe: Book 2 features the Weeping Werewolf, who transforms every night when the sun goes down, rather than just during the full moon.
* Literature/MazeMegaburstSpace: Maze is a SexShifter who's male at night and female by day, each form having a separate personality. It triggers even deep underground where there's no way to know where in the day/night cycle they are.

* Series/Charmed1998 had a couple where the man was cursed to turn into an owl during the day, while the woman turned into a wolf at night. She had refused a demon's advances, so he cursed them in a way where they could no longer be together (though they always rush to meet each other at dawn, when they're briefly both human).
* Series/LegendOfTheSeeker: The king in "Cursed" turns into a monster by night to stop the D'Harans invading. He can't stop it, even killing his wife unknowingly.
* Series/TheXFiles: In the first season episode "Shapes", a rancher who killed a Native American man insists he fired at a monstrous animal, and is himself later mauled to death in a mysterious animal attack. Tribal elder Ish tells Mulder that he believes (correctly, of course) that the attack was the work of a Manitou, supposedly an evil spirit that transforms its human host into a wolf-like beast. Presumably anticipating the obvious comparison, Ish specifically states that the Manitou changes by night, not by the full moon.
** In a novella, Agent Skinner meets an old friend he knew from the war in Vietnam. There he was bitten by a wererat and now turns into such a creature every night. He lives in a poor area and kills the homeless every night until Skinner kills him.
* An episode of Series/Smallville features a boy named Byron. With him it is inverted. He's a normal boy at night, but as soon as his skin comes into contact with sunshine, his eyes turn black, his muscles become more prominent, he gains superhuman physical strength, and he has a bit of an anger problem.

* Much of the initial storyline of Manhwa/TheBrideOfTheWaterGod is moved by the fact that becomes a little boy during the day and only regains his true adult form at night.

* VideoGame/DragonQuestVI has Amos, a warrior who unknowingly transforms into a dragon at night. You can help him keep the transformation under control, and he'll join your party.
* VideoGame/FiveNightsAtFreddysSecurityBreach: The Daycare Attendant switches forms based on lighting if not actual time, with it taking its Sun form in lit areas and its Moon form in dark areas. Its behavior changes as well: as Sun, it excitedly and overbearingly wants to play and keep its area ordered, but as Moon, it's malevolent and wants to punish Gregory for being in the Pizzaplex after hours.
* In VideoGame/Minecraft, spiders go from neutral creatures who only attack if provoked, to full-blown evil animals who'll attack as soon as they see you at night.
* VideoGame/SonicUnleashed: Sonic transforms into a 'werehog' at night due to Dark Gaia's corruption, which also comes with a separate style of gameplay than his normal form.
* VideoGame/TrialsOfMana has half-beastman Kevin, who transforms into a werewolf form at night which increases his attack. This happens to other beastmen too.
* This also happens to the werewolves in VideoGame/OgreBattle64.
* Trope for the VideoGame/Pokemon Shaymin, who can transform into its Sky Forme during the day but changes back when night falls.
* In Knight Lore, Sabreman is transformed every night, having been cursed with lycantropy in the previous game.
* A recurring creature in the VideoGame/Grow games and others Eyezmaze games is a creature whose form is different during the day and the night. During the day, it's a white blob who sleeps by default but can be awaken by an alarm clock, its soft body can grow limbs or a long neck. During the night, the creature is awake and gets hands, wings and horns and is half-green, half-yellow though the colors may change depending of the game. The day form is called "Rotta" and the night form is called "Pierre".

* Webcomic/Unsounded: Duane Adelier's mind travels into the BackgroundMagicField while the sun is down, leaving his body controlled only by its HorrorHunger. It's a side effect of whatever power animates him, but the reason for its relationship to the sun is unknown.
-->Rahm: Adelier's a monster rotting in body and mind, with the Khert every night trying its damnedest to pull him apart and send him on.

* Inverted in WesternAnimation/Gargoyles. The Gargoyles turn to stone in the day time, and come alive at night. It functions like an extreme forced sleep cycle. It activates a HealingFactor and generally recharges them, but also leaves them vulnerable if they're not at home base, as they get instantly petrified mid-sentence wherever they are for at least 12 hours.
* WesternAnimation/TheVentureBrothers has minor characters Lady-Hawk and Lyndon-Bee Johnson, a rather blatant ShoutOut to Film/Ladyhawke. She's a woman in the day and a hawk at night, and her husband is a bee in the day, and a man at night and they are cursed to never be human at the same time.
* Moonshadow elves in WesternAnimation/TheDragonPrince can change at night under a full moon. Then their shapes become strangely ghostly, but their powers increase. Particularly powerful moonshadow elves can change into this shape without the full moon, but they can only do it at night.
