And Zoidberg!²-->-- WesternAnimation/Futurama, "Obsoletely Fabulous"²²A standard comedy trope which, at its core, takes the form:²² "Group A... and Bob."²²It is often expanded to mention two or more groups that form a supergroup:²² "Ladies, Gentlemen... Bob."²²In either version, Bob is already expected to be among the group(s) in question, but is singled out as if he's not, usually at Bob's expense; "Bob" may be anyone, including the ButtMonkey or an s. In extreme cases, the group will be received with cheers, and the name of Bob will be received by ChirpingCrickets.²²This can be PlayedForLaughs in cases where it's literally impossible for Bob not to be a member of the groups mentioned.²²It can also be used to deliver a StealthInsult: "We welcome members of all benevolent professions, as well as lawyers." Or, inverted, it can even deliver a compliment: "You morons, and Bob."²²ProtagonistAndFriends is a SubTrope, in which this and CharacterTitle collide. Compare: AndTheRest, SnubByOmission, BaitAndSwitchComparison, ITakeOffenseToThatLastOne, GuiltByAssociationGag, LadiesAndGerms, and InsultToRocks. Compare and Contrast EspeciallyZoidberg.²²See also TheFriendNobodyLikes, which overlaps in cases such as the s, Zoidberg from Futurama where this person is singled out because, well, they're the friend no one likes. ²²----²!!Examples:²²²²²* "Avocado can be found in upscale restaurants... and now Subway!"²* An Ace hardware commercial has a woman talking to her "friends, neighbors...Scott."²* In a commercial for the Monsters vs. Aliens animated series: "Don't miss Monsters vs Aliens!... And Bob."²* In a 2013 TV Land promo for the season premieres of Series/HotInCleveland, Series/TheExes, and The Soul Man, the announcer promotes it as "a night of a thousand stars" before Creator/BettyWhite interrupts and says she only counts 10... and Creator/WayneKnight. The breakdown: Four from The Exes (which has the aforementioned Wayne Knight), four from Hot In Cleveland (including Betty herself), and two from The Soul Man.²* In the "Junkface" ad from Neutrogena, it states that the Junkface problem occurs in "provinces, territories... and Nunavut." According to their ArtisticLicenseGeography, Nunavut is not one of the territories... oh, and its border with the Northwest Territories apparently doesn't exist.²* A promotion for the Nintendo UK store offered, with a pre-order of VideoGame/SonicBoom, "a free t-shirt featuring a host of likable characters. And Amy Rose."²* Presumably unintentional example from an advert broadcast in the UK: "Get all these hilarious comedies, and Film/GrownUps and Film/TheOtherGuys, on Blu-Ray or DVD"²²²²* An incident in Manga/LuckyStar, where Konata greets the Hiiragi twins with "Tsukasa-tachi", leading Kagami to complain about not being mentioned by name. (It should be noted that Konata and Kagami being best friends (for a given value of 'best'), or more according to many fans, this snub will have been entirely intentional on Konata's part.)²* Anime/MazingerZ: Hilariously inverted every time the villains told a sentence along the lines of "Go ahead! Finish with Mazinger-Z... and the other two robots!". The other two robots being Aphrodite-A (or Diana-A) and Boss Borot.²* The Battle City arc of Anime/YuGiOh features a scene with Seto Kaiba in a single turn summoning all three of his Blue-Eyes White Dragons...and Hyozanryu.²* In Anime/YuGiOhGX Chazz says "we may be one man down, but we're 5 men strong. Well, 4 men and a lovely lady. Alright, 3 men, a lady, and Syrus!"²* Natsu of Manga/FairyTail and anyone who doesn't go on missions with him likes to say either "It's Natsu's group...plus Happy" or "Fairy Tail's strongest team...and Lucy" Lucy and Happy even do it. Only Gray seems kind enough not to.²* LightNovel/BakaAndTestSummonTheBeasts: At the bathhouse, there are three changing rooms: men's, women's, and Hideyoshi's.²* In the character Izaya Orihara claims to love all human beings. Except for Shizuo Heiwajima.²* In an early episode of , Misty says that she's the 4th sensational sister, who were a trio of water performers and Misty's sisters. One of them said that there are "three sensational sisters and one runt."²** A later episode features a tag battle during a ball. The participants are Serena, Ash, Miette and James. The latter was even wondering why he got selected in the first place and was the least invested in the battle.²* The dub of Anime/PantyAndStockingWithGarterbelt gives us this little gem:²-->Garterbelt: Ladies and Panty...²* Anime/AngelBeats has Naoi, who insists on calling the entire SSS a group of idiots. Except for the wise and benevolent Otonashi, of course!²* Manga/OnePiece:²** Inverted in Sanji's case. Whenever he gets separated from the others, he worries only about the ladies of the crew, and always wants to assist them first. And cares little to not about the other guys.²--->Sanji: Hello! Nami, and Vivi! And the rest...²** When Usopp left the crew during the Waters Seven arc, addressing members of the crew tended to be tailed with something along the lines of "And Usopp, I guess".²* Manga/SgtFrog has a variation when Fuyuki sees a UFO crash into his house.²-->Fuyuki: Mom! Sis! And to a lesser degree, Sarge!²* In the anime version of Manga/MagicKnightRayearth, as the Magic Knights reflect on the foes they have faced, none of them mention Innouva even once, despite his defeat in the previous episode.²* The non-Cure main characters are usually referred as extra characters: "Pretty Cure and Shiny Luminous." "[[Anime/YesPrettyCure5GoGo Pretty Cure [5] and Milky Rose]]."²* :²** Kyoutarou, TheOneGuy of the Kiyosumi mahjong club and by far its worst player, tends to get this from time to time. In the anime, Hisa tells Mako that she locked the three first-years out of the mahjong club room so that Yuuki would be able to study for her exam retake. Mako reminds Hisa that there are four first-years, and Hisa mentions that Kyoutarou is, as usual, doing the heavy lifting for the club.²** The trope is lampshaded to an extent when Tsuruga talks about being invited, along with Kazekoshi and Ryuumonbuchi, to help Kiyosumi prepare for the Nationals after their victory in the prefectural tournament. Yumi suspects that Kiyosumi's team wants to practice against Kazekoshi and Ryuumonbuchi, both of whom have been to the nationals before, more than they want to practice against the relative underdog Tsuruga, but sees it as a mutually beneficial arrangement.²--->Yumi: I can understand wanting to play strong opponents in preparation for going up against the monsters at the nationals. Ryuumonbuchi and Kazekoshi from the prefectural finals at least are national-level teams.\²Satomi: Wa-ha-ha. So we're just the extra?\²Yumi: [smiles] Kiyosumi isn't trying to be mean. And it doesn't sound half bad to me.²* In Anime/Etotama, when Usa-tan is showing everyone a chart of which Eto-shin do and do not want Nya-tan included in the Chinese Zodiac, Moo-tan (who has a crush on Nya-tan and thus would be in her favor) is excluded because "she's too perverted to count."² ²²²* Animation/PleasantGoatAndBigBigWolf: The English Pleasant Goat Fun Class episode descriptions often refer to the main group of protagonists as the "goats and Wolffy".²²²²* On AudioPlay/WereAlive Michael chastises a bunch of rebellious Tower dwellers by saying "I just sent two of my friends out there to help you people, and I'll not have you throw it back in their faces!" Angel brings it up a bit later:²-->Angel: Didn't we send three people out there?\²Michael: I said two friends. The other one was just Burt.² ²²²* Series/TheColbertReport: ²** Stephen Colbert announced Dish Network was being sued by all the major networks. And .²** Another time, he commented that Putin was banning food imports from all major countries and Norway.²* Creator/DaveBarry: This is one of his running gags.²** Once referred to human beings "and Music/LimpBizkit."²** "We, humans and congressmen alike..."²* Creator/AmbroseBierce wrote the following for the definition of "man" in his Devil's Dictionary:²-->an animal so lost in rapturous contemplation of what he thinks he is as to overlook what he indubitably ought to be. His chief occupation is extermination of other animals and his own species, which, however, multiplies with such insistent rapidity as to infest the whole habitable earth and Canada.²* Creator/BrianRegan: "My wife and I, we have two wonderful kids...and another kid."²* Riche and Eddie in Series/Bottom did this with their Bottom Live 2001: An Arse Oddity tour, during a rather moving funeral scene for Dave the parrot. Cue this dialogue:²--->Jughead: I need my friends for support. (pause) Oh, and you can come, too, Veronica.²** Variant in one comic strip, when Jughead reads a newspaper article describing their rock group:²--->Jughead: The Archies come across as a tight-knit and cohesive group...with one exception. You're torturing my friends. Summers, too.²* In a Franchise/JusticeLeagueOfAmerica comic, Ultraman (an evil alternate version of Superman) addresses Batman this way. It's really more of his way of un-subtly insulting Owlman (his universe's version of Batman) as having little purpose in the Crime Syndicate. Ultraman and Owlman tend to make remarks like this all the time.²-->"Say your goodbyes. Only a few seconds left before the strongest among you- and Batman- find yourselves on our world. We'll kill the others slowly."²* In the Polish comic book series ComicBook/TytusRomekIAtomek, in the issue #18 called "Tytus Artystą" ("Tytus As An Artist"), we have this unique case:²-->Radio announcement: A subhuman named Tytus left his home and didn't return, distinguishing marks: has fur. Speaks human and English.² ²²²* ComicStrip/Garfield:²** Garfield said "The world is filled with many wonders... and Jon".²** This strip features Garfield and Jon discussing Santa.²--->Jon: Santa will be here soon with presents for everyone who's been good.\²Garfield: And me!\²Jon: And you.²²²²* In Fanfic/HalfLifeFullLifeConsequences, Gordon Freeman, , tells John Freeman to "Save humens[-[sic]-] and Henry Freeman".²* In a variation where the format works as a compliment, one fanfic featured Murdoc calling the other band members "you retards - and Noodle". Possibly attempting to save his own skin, given Noodle's TykeBomb status.²* From Series/2008 fanfic How to Pick Up Guys At Bars: "It took Arthur a little over an hour to decide what to wear. Fretting over clothes was such a girly thing to do, he didn't dare ask any of the men for their help. (Instead, he asked Lancelot.)"²* From Fanfic/CalvinAndHobbesTheSeries:²--> Calvin: Well. The disciple of the Third Hokage who was almost a legend? A writer of dirty books for dirty men (and Kakashi-sensei)?²* A RunningGag in Fanfic/MonsterInTheTwilight and its sequel with the CMC. Brad Parris has at least appeared in promo photos, but, as has been the case with all post-Vesano albums, he didn't record any tracks (to be fair, he was hired after What Should Not Be Unearthed was done being recorded; the same can't be said for Chris Lollis, who around for two separate recording processes but never actually laid down any tracks).²* Poor Jeff Lynne often gets this treatment when someone brings up Music/TheTravelingWilburys. And some guy named [=LeBron=].²* There seems to be an inverted version of this when it comes to stereotypes of nations "apathetic" to soccer, in the saying that, "The only people that hate The Beautiful Game are HateTingle... and Canadians, Australians, New Zealanders, and some Irish." This is also true when it comes to stereotypes of nations referring the sport as soccer.²* Happens in UsefulNotes/IceHockey quite a bit:²** The UsefulNotes/NationalHockeyLeague, or rather, the entire sport of ice hockey, considering it is the least popular of the "Big Four" American and Canadian Team Sports Due to among other things, the sport’s difficulty in appealing to the Southern United States considering that there is little to no snow in those areas and hockey is obviously popular in places where it snows in the winter., gets this quite a bit as some detractors will even omit Hockey from its major league status. Here, the group of leagues would be referred to as: "The Big Three Sports...and Hockey."\²\²This happens more frequently the more south you go (in which hockey is cropped out entirely or replaced with UsefulNotes/NASCAR). Don't say this the farther north you go through, especially in Canada.²*** In markets where hockey has a huge following (Canada, Michigan, Minnesota, New England, etc.) basketball usually fits this trope. For a while, the Minnesota Timberwolves could only be heard on a 9,100-watt station that only reached the northern suburbs of the Twin Cities. The Minnesota Wild, on the other hand, was on 50,000 watt WCCO. ²*** When hockey is not getting this, it's usually Canadian Football Due to the (at least perceived) skill and popularity disparity between the Canadian and American counterparts. or Soccer For those familiar with the above example, this is unsurprising, although some would argue that being a "Zoidberg" is at least progress for soccer in North America, as really obscure and unpopular sports would not even be considered.²** In Canada the line that opens a CBC hockey broadcast is: "Hello Canada and hockey fans in the United States and Newfoundland..." This is not exactly an example, as when the line was recorded (the 1930s) Newfoundland wasn't a Canadian province, but another of the self-governing dominions of the British Empire.²** Conn Smythe began many a public speech with, "Ladies, gentlemen... and Frenchmen." Or some variant.²* During 2011 and the first half of the 2012 UsefulNotes/Tennis season, it was common for pundits to say that the greatest players were unquestionably UsefulNotes/NovakDjokovic, UsefulNotes/RogerFederer, UsefulNotes/RafaelNadal... and Andy Murray, " the other guy" who was unquestionably better than anyone who wasn't Djokovic, Federer, or Nadal but unquestionably ByAwesome by them nonetheless. It wasn't until the latter half of 2012 that Murray began breaking out of his "that UsefulNotes/Tennis player most likely to fill the last spot of the semifinals after Djokovic, Federer, and Nadal show up for their reservations" role.²** However, at the end of 2012, Andy Murray took a level in badass and became the first Brit to win a Grand Slam in 75 years. Then, Rafael Nadal dropped out of the 2013 Australian Open and thus out of the top 4 for the first time since 2005. The Top 5 players in Men's Tennis was then therefore composed of: The Big Four... and David Ferrer. More recently, with a late-career resurgence by Stan Wawrinka, some observers put him on a par with the Big Four until injuries and a drop in form ended that. ²** The 36 men's Grand Slam singles titles between the 2005 French Open and 2013 US Open were won by the Big Four...and Juan Martín del Potro (US Open, 2009).Since then, Wawrinka has won three Grand Slam titles (the same as Murray's career total), and Marin Čilić has also picked up one.²* The National Collegiate Athletic Association is the primary college-level in the US, comprising of nearly every major and minor college and university in the United States... and Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada.²* Examples abound in NCAA Division I conferences. (All affiliations are current for the 2019–20 school year, with select future affiliations also noted as needed.)²** The current Big East Conferencenot to be confused with the original Big East, founded in 1979 and split in 2013 along football lines, with the seven schools that didn't play top-level football leaving to form a new Big East and the football schools reorganizing as the American Athletic Conference has 10 full members, consisting of nine Catholic institutions and Butler University, a private but nonsectarian school. To be averted when [=UConn=]Connecticut joins, most likely in 2020... which will create a different set of Zoidbergs, to be discussed in their own bullet point below.²*** Another Big East Zoidberg: Villanova, playing football in the second-level FCS, is the only conference member that awards football scholarships. (The other two members with football programs, Butler and Georgetown, also play in FCS, but without football scholarships.) Also to be averted once [=UConn=] joins.²*** [=UConn=] will become a Big East Zoidberg in more ways than one. First, it will be the only public institution to be a full member. Also, unless it decides to drop down to FCS football, or even drop that sport entirely, it will be the only member with FBS football.²** Several conferences consist entirely of public schools except for one private institution (counting only full members):²*** Big Ten Conference: 13 public schools and Northwestern.²*** Southeastern Conference: 13 public schools and Vanderbilt.²*** Conference USA: 13 public schools and Rice.²*** Ohio Valley Conference (which plays FCS football): 11 public schools and Belmont. Only nine of the 12 members play football in the OVC. Belmont has no football team.²*** America East Conference (a non-football conference): 8 public schools and Hartford.²** Conversely, two conferences, both of which play FCS football, would consist entirely of private institutions but for one public school:²*** Northeast Conference: 10 private schools and Central Connecticut.²*** Pioneer Football League (a football-only league): 9 private schools and Morehead State. The number of private schools will increase to 10 when Presbyterian joins in 2021. The PFL is made up of schools that offer scholarships in sports other than football, but wish to avoid the expense of scholarships for a football program. Morehead State is a member of the aforementioned Ohio Valley Conference.²** The Big West Conference, which began as a football-sponsoring league but dropped the sport after the 2000 season, demonstrates this trope in two different ways:²*** The conference's current membership consists of eight California schools and the main campus of the University of UsefulNotes/Hawaii. The number of California schools will expand to 10 in 2020 when Cal State Bakersfield and UC San Diego join.²*** More than 20 schools have been members of the conference, either in all sports or for football only, since it was founded as the Pacific Coast Athletic Association in 1969. Every one is a public institution except for the University of the Pacific, a private school that retains its historic Methodist affiliation but has received no church funds since 1969. It was a founding member for football only and joined in other sports in 1971, but left in 2013 to return to its former home of the West Coast Conference.²** The West Coast Conference (also non-football):²*** For over 30 years (1980–2011), it consisted of seven Catholic institutions and Pepperdine University, affiliated with the Churches of Christ.²*** Then averted when BYU joined.²*** Returned in a slightly different form in 2013, when the aforementioned Pacific rejoined—the WCC now has nine church-funded institutions and one technically nonsectarian school.²** Before 2015–16, the Horizon League (also a non-football conference) was made up of eight schools that had once been in The Summit League... and Detroit Mercy.Though at the time, the school branded its athletic program as simply "Detroit" despite having adopted the "Detroit Mercy" name after a merger in 1990. Averted with the arrival of Northern Kentucky, which had spent the first three years of its move from NCAA Division II in the Atlantic Sun Conference.²** A couple of football-playing conferences have one non-football school:²*** American Athletic Conference: Wichita State²*** Southern Conference (FCS): UNC Greensboro²** For more than 30 years, Tennessee State was the Zoidberg of Division I [=HBCUs=] (historically black colleges and universities). These schools have traditionally formed their own conferences, a legacy of an era when many predominantly white schools refused to play them. With that refusal in the increasingly distant past, it's now more a matter of tradition and affinity. When TSU joined the Ohio Valley Conference in 1986, it became the first D-I HBCU that wasn't in either the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference or Southwestern Athletic Conference. The trope was averted in July 2018 when Hampton left the MEAC for the Big South Conference.²** In terms of fandom, a couple of conferences are (or have been) famous for having single schools with a sporting obsession wildly out of place with the rest of the league:²*** SEC: Throughout the SEC, it's said there are two seasons: football and spring football. Not at Kentucky, where it's instead basketball and basketball recruiting. Football is mainly a nice diversion from basketball... at least as long as the Wildcats have a chance to make a bowl game.²*** ACC: For much of the conference's first 40 years, Clemson was notorious for being the one football-obsessed school in a basketball-obsessed league. (While other ACC schools, notably charter member Maryland and late-1970s arrival Georgia Tech, cared a good deal about football, they tended to care more about basketball. Clemson didn't even pay lip service to basketball.) This was averted in the early 1990s with a renaissance for Georgia Tech football and the arrival of Florida State and has since become a thing of the past with the later arrival of football factories such as Miami and Virginia Tech.²* Another college sports example can be seen in UsefulNotes/Philadelphia. One of the most storied rivalries in college sports is the Philadelphia Big 5, the men's basketball rivalry between four of the city's five Division I schools—La Salle, Penn, Saint Joseph's, and Temple—plus Villanova, located in the nearby Main Line suburbs. If you're keeping count, you'll notice that there's one D-I school missing. Drexel is not part of the rivalry, despite not only being in the city proper but also physically adjacent to Penn, making it Philly's college sports Zoidberg. That said, Drexel and Penn do have their own intense rivalry, which is geographically the closest in D-I. The rivalry is called the Battle of 33rd Street, thanks not only to the two campuses being adjacent but the schools' basketball arenas being all of three blocks apart on said street.² ²²²* Theatre/Hamilton: Being the least historically relevant of the three Schuyler sisters, Peggy often forces her way into the conversation:²-->Angelica: "Angelica!"\²Eliza: "Eliza!"\²Peggy: "...and Peggy!"²²²²* Used in one of the endings of . This is not exactly an insult, however, as Helga seems much cheerier after the addendum.²** It's because Helga IS neither. She's a robot, and hence, genderless, even if she's modeled after a female.²** It's likely that this is an objection on her part to Qwark's usage of "ladies" (as Helga is hardly lady material) rather than a reference to her being a robot. She identifies as female and is referred to as a female. Note that, despite being present at the time, Clank wasn't excluded like she was.²* Magazine/GameInformer's review of VideoGame/DevilMayCry HD Collection said in their concept tab: "Two great games for one great price. At first, it used to be Jeff, Ryan, Vinny, and Brad Shoemaker, mainly because Brad was known for playing pretty bad during video game quick looks, much to the entertainment of the community. A saying was even coined called "Pulling a Brad," as well as jokes about Brad getting fired and leaving the website. However, in recent years, Brad Shoemaker became decent enough to show off games properly during quick looks, to the point where the ButtMonkey effect wore off and "Team Brad" replaced it. Now Patrick Klepek is considered the "and" guy among the Giant Bomb cast, especially after his controversial articles about sexism in the video game industry, among other things that upset the community: a community that's used to jokes and sarcasm from the main staff, not serious articles about discrimination. He's also been included in almost every quick look since he joined the video game website. ²* A common joke: Members of the UsefulNotes/IvyLeague and Brown.²* In South America, UsefulNotes/Suriname (a former Dutch colony), UsefulNotes/Guyana (former British colony) and UsefulNotes/FrenchGuiana (still a part of France) are often forgotten amidst 10 former Portuguese and Spanish colonies. Smith is widely acknowledged by the mainstream media as the OnlySaneMan of Fox News who refuses to go along with his more partisan colleagues' blatant biases, and van Susteren is actually a good friend of Maddow's who has earned respect for her reporting from many in the profession. The obvious implication, of course, was that no one else employed by Fox qualified as a real journalist.²* The megaregion of Southern California (that's with a capital "S") includes every county south of San Luis Obispo County, except Imperial County.Santa Barbara County, Ventura County, Los Angeles County, Orange County, San Bernardino County, Riverside County, and San Diego County, with some people including Kern County while others categorize it as part of the Inland Empire Hence, in order to describe the entire geographical region, it's sometimes referred to as "Southern California and Imperial County" or something synonymous. The reason is that Imperial County's population is an order of magnitude smaller than any of the other countries included within the megaregion, or in the case of Los Angeles, two orders of magnitude smaller. And just like Zoidberg, most natives can remember the other counties but forget that Imperial exists.²* At the end of UsefulNotes/TheNapoleonicWars, the victorious nations met in Paris for discussions, by the behest of Great Britain.
