Shooters and other gun games like them can be difficult to make into [=RPGs=] without FunctionalMagic, which is why there has to be a collection of equivalents to make up for the lack of magic. Thankfully, there are two: [[StuffBlowingUp Explosives such as grenades and rockets]], and healing items such as medkits and defibrillators. Therefore, when creating a shooter, developers have to take into account the following RPG-like shooter archetypes:

# Soldiers, who possess high HP and defense like the warrior. They typically wield [[MoreDakka automatic weapons]] (assault rifles, submachine guns and machine guns) or [[ShotgunsAreJustBetter shotguns]].
# [[ColdSniper Snipers]], who are stealthy, agile, and precise like the rogue. [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin Shoots at enemies using sniper rifles]]. Most likely to carry a sidearm or knife, as well as using a [[HollywoodSilencer suppressor]].
# [[TheEngineer Sappers]], who use {{Magic Tool}}s to build and repair vehicles and [[TheTurretMaster structures]], as well as demolish enemy vehicles and structures as well, like the mage or [[SummonMagic summoner]] with his numerous attack or summoning magic.
# [[TheMedic Medics]], who [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin heal and revive fallen teammates]] like the cleric. In games where everyone carries medkits or heals automatically, they are either better in patching up, or serve the double duty of covering their teammates using shields or non-lethal grenades. [[CombatMedic Some medics can also fight on their own]], although the weapons they equip vary from title to title.

Sure, most games don't use medics, and instead have players resort to creating either Soldiers, Snipers, or Sappers. However, these four modern-day archetypes are strong bases for developers wishing to create an RPG in a modern-day or sci-fi setting.

There are also classes that can contradict the "sniper" class, as well as all of the other classes here, that use patterns and abilities that may make them extremely different from these basic archetypes. Then again, the same could be said for fantasy settings. Some of them can be based around crowd control like the sapper and the sniper, but also specialize at defense like the Soldier and the Medic, and counter attacks in a subversive manner like the sniper. The choices for classes in a modern setting, like a fantasy one, are limitless. Unfortunately there is a tendency to forget to use this option.

!!Examples:

* ''VideoGame/{{Battlefield 3}}'' and ''VideoGame/{{Battlefield 4}}'':
** Soldier: Support Class, wields light machine guns and can drop ammo packs.
** Sniper: Recon Class, wields sniper rifles and can designate targets, detect enemy movement, and create spawn beacons for allies.
** Sapper: Engineer Class, wields carbines/PDWs, can repair friendly vehicles with blowtorch and destroy enemy vehicles with rocket launchers.
** Medic: Assault Class, wields assault rifles, can resurrect down allies with defibrillator, drop health packs, and carry a grenade launcher.
* ''VideoGame/{{Borderlands}}'':
** Brick is a mixture between the Soldier's durability and the Sapper's use of explosives.
** Mordecai is the Sniper while his companion Bloodwing is the Medic (in terms of being an AttackDrone).
** Lilith is a Siren, a race with powerful abilities, making her a Sapper (or a modern-day Mage). Her choice of [[MoreDakka SMGs]] make her more of a Soldier, and her phase walk adds a touch of the Sniper.
** Finally we have Roland, the team Medic who can also lay down suppressive fire with his turrets, making him a Soldier too ([[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin he's even nicknamed as such]]).
* ''Videogame/{{Borderlands 2}}'':
** Soldier: Salvador, whose abilities focus on survivability. There's also Krieg, who focuses on close range combat and dishing as much damage as he takes.
** Sniper: [=Zer0=], whose abilities focus on precision and critical hits
** Sapper: Axton, whose abilities focus on being generally good at everything with some emphasis on explosive damage. There's also Gaige, which has abilities that focus mostly around dealing lots of damage, but that's not all...
** Medic: Maya, who has a skill tree dedicated to healing herself and allies.
* ''Videogame/BorderlandsThePreSequel'':
** Soldier: Athena, who uses a shield to tank damage and keep attention on her. Wilhelm also, who can be upgraded for high durability.
** Sniper: Nisha and Aurelia. The former can put a lot of damage on a single target very quickly, the latter has a dedicated sniping skill tree.
** Sapper: Wilhelm, Claptrap, and Doppleganger Jack all have means of inflicting area damage, or at least damaging multiple enemies at once.
** Medic: Nominally Claptrap, but he's [[LethalJokeCharacter unpredictable]] and can temporarily become any other role.
* The weapons of ''VideoGame/CallOfDuty'' can be classified as such:
** Soldier: Assault rifles, machine guns, submachine guns, and shotguns.
