Fact is, the industry is incredibly small, and there just aren't enough actors to cover all the exponentially increasing amount of characters and projects created each year. Being versatile is required.˛˛Bonus points if the actor is able to avert LarynxDissonance and NotEvenBotheringWithTheAccent, but it's not vital.˛˛Name comes from a nickname given to Creator/MelBlanc, who was responsible for nearly every classic WesternAnimation/LooneyTunes character. (This is an exaggeration, however. He admits in his autobiography that he "only" did about 850 voices.)˛˛Can overlap with TalkingToHimself, if the actor does multiple roles on the same show.˛˛Interestingly enough, the vast majority of voice actors and vocal work don't create "voices" but are largely using their own natural voice with slight tonal changes, pitched up or down. Thus it is still possible for a PigeonholedVoiceActor to ironically also have "a thousand voices," just people aren't aware of their versatility.˛˛Not to be confused with VoiceChangeling or VoiceOfTheLegion.˛˛----˛!!Just choose a few key roles to give an idea of the actors' ranges. Save large lists for their own pages.˛˛˛* ManOfAThousandVoices/English˛˛˛˛˛˛* The undisputed king of this in Japanese voice acting was Creator/KeiTomiyama who was basically the Japanese equivalent Creator/MelBlanc, and when he died of pancreatic cancer in 1995 many of his roles were taken over by the below mentioned Creator/KoichiYamadera who is equally as talented as he was.˛* Music/MegumiHayashibara and Creator/HikaruMidorikawa are so prolific that you could probably connect everybody else in anime to them within one or two steps.˛* Creator/KoichiYamadera, the voice of Spike Spiegel, Ryouga Hibiki... and DonaldDuck. (No, really-- that's him in the Japanese version of Franchise/KingdomHearts.) He's also the go-to guy for Japanese dubs of Creator/JimCarrey, Creator/EddieMurphy and Creator/RobinWilliams. See The Other Wiki for a fuller listing.˛* Creator/HirokiTakahashi may not be the most prolific seiyuu around but he's certainly very varied. Cases in point being MonsterClown Hisoka from Anime/HunterXHunter, Genki Guy Kikumaru Eiji from Manga/ThePrinceOfTennis, Superbia "Shouts all his lines" Squalo from Manga/KatekyoHitmanReborn, ButtMonkey Harima Kenji from Anime/SchoolRumble, Stoic Ryu from Franchise/StreetFighter... and soft spoken Japan from Manga/AxisPowersHetalia.˛* Creator/ToshihikoSeki, who can range from cheerful fun guy to irritable badass to... quack.˛* Creator/KenjiUtsumi's vocal range can best be summed up by watching his work in Manga/DragonBall and Anime/DragonBallZ: you'd never suspect that he voiced the BadassBaritone Shenron, the high-pitched LargeHam announcer of the Tenkaichi Budokai, the sinister Commander Red, and Recoome all at once. Likewise, you could hardly relate those voices as belonging to the same voice actor as Raoh and Kaioh, the latter of whom even gets a noticeably different voice when he has his helmet on, even when excluding the breathy-voice filter.˛* Creator/AkiraIshida is another guy that's everywhere but with a lot of range- but in particular, he once did a bit in Manga/Gintama in which the one character he voices had an elaborate daydream sequence. He literally talked to himself for something like 10 minutes, all in various male AND female voices.˛** Taken UpToEleven when he voices fourty-six characters all by himself in a smartphone game called Chain Chronicle.˛* Creator/WataruTakagi (Yes, he both voiced and gave his name to that character). In what is quite possibly the greatest showcase of vocal talent in Franchise/StreetFighter history, he pulls quintuple-duty as Gen, Birdi, Adon, Zangief, and Sodom in the Alpha.˛** Add the title character of WesternAnimation/ScaredySquirrel, and the current voice of WesternAnimation/DaffyDuck, to the mix.˛* Yuichi Nagashima, aka Cho. This guy voiced Jaken, Hiroshi Uchiyamada, Elmer Fudd, Brook, Blitzwing, Gollum and WesternAnimation/ScoobyDoo.˛* Creator/AyaHirano is one of the few seiyuus that doesn't get typecast. She went from eccentric with Jerkass tendencies (Haruhi from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya) to a obsessed, otaku highschooler (Konata from Anime/LuckyStar) to a LesYay teacher (Yoko from Anime/SchoolRumbles second season) to an almost-godly little girl (Lumière from Anime/KiddyGrade) to a StalkerWithACrush (Misa from Manga/DeathNote) to serious ActionGirl (Chiko from Manga/TheDaughterOfTwentyFaces).˛** And Dende from Anime/DragonBallKai (which Creator/AyaHirano voices) is considered male. (Though Nameks are a one-gender race...)˛* Creator/KotonoMitsuishi is known for performing a wide variety of characters, ranging from Anime/SailorMoon and Excel Excel to Misato Katsuragi, Mireille Bouquet, Juri Arisugawa and Ebichu.˛* Creator/TomokazuSeki has voiced characters ranging from TheStoic Sousuke Sagara in Lightnovel/FullMetalPanic, to one of ThoseTwoGuys Jun Kitagawa in VisualNovel/Kanon, to ManipulativeBastard BigBad Reiji Kageyama in VideoGame/GateKeepers, to HotBlooded mecha pilot Domon Kasshu in G Gundam, to AnimalMascot Mepple in Anime/FutariWaPrettyCure, to LargeHam Gilgamesh in VisualNovel/FateStayNight.˛** Let's not forget he voiced Brandon "Beyond the Grave" Heat in Anime/Gungrave, as well as in the second game of the video game series, Gungrave: O.D. (Overdose)˛** He is also AloofBigBrother Touya Kinomoto from Manga/CardcaptorSakura.˛* You'd think Creator/SanaeKobayashi is pigeonholed as either Tsunderes (Akira from Anime/MaiHime) or boys (the other Akira, from Manga/HikaruNoGo)... Go and say the same when you hear her as NaiveEverygirl Kumi Mashiba from Manga/HajimeNoIppo, the Yandere Lucy/Cutie Nyu in Manga/ElfenLied, or the titular ActionGirl from Anime/Madlax.˛* Creator/ChiwaSaito has, as just an example, voiced a Genki ActionGirl, a perpetually angry member of the QuirkyMiniBossSquad, and a villainous SmugSnake, all in the same show.˛* Creator/KappeiYamaguchi is most often cast in the role of Shonen heroes, such as Ranma Saotome, Anime/Inuyasha, Sai Saici, and 4}} Teddie, but his range is deceptively wide. One need look no further than his role as L for proof of this.˛* Creator/MakikoOhmoto has a wide array of voices, from TheOjou and motherly figures to Shonen heroes, all the way to Franchise/Kirby.˛* Daisuke Namikawa is one of the voice actors pegged down in several roles that could be very much grate your skulls, playing the irritating Katz Kobayashi, the rough and wild Michael Trinity, the super loud-mouthed Miyamoto Musashi. However, he also had his share of straight, goody-two-shoes heroes such as the main character of VideoGame/Persona 4, Cornelius or the remake voice of Claude Kenni. Then, you've got the melancholic, manipulative BetaBaddie Ulquiorra Sciffer or the ultra-manipulative BigBad Toutaku from Manga/IkkiTousen amongst his portfolio. Then you'll never look at him the same again.˛** He also does dubs of lots of famous actors like Brad Pitt, Anakin Skywalker, Elijah Wood...˛** And he's Lucario.˛** He also voices BOTH North and South Italy.˛* Creator/ToshiyukiMorikawa does TheHero roles (Ryu, Takaya aka D-Boy), TheStoic roles (Kyosuke), Evil Bastard roles (Sephiroth)... very affable father that sounds so light (Forbessi) and loud-mouthed idiots (Nobunaga Kiyota).˛* Creator/MiyukiSawashiro is what some people call versatile, she can be voicing spunky boys with an cheery attitude like Milanor from VideoGame/YggdraUnion or Carl Clover from VideoGame/BlazBlue, a demanding Ojou such as Perrine or Shinku or cute bubbly Nekomimi girls like Nike or Mint. Younger characters are not her only forte either. Stripperiffic troubled Velvet and LittleMissBadass WomanScorned Hotarubi would like a word for you.˛** She's also one of the first seiyuu to reprise a role originally dubbed in Japanese in the English dub of an anime. She reprised her role as Puchiko in the "Leave it To Piyoko" OVA of Anime/DiGiCharat (She wasn't available for the last 2 episodes, so she was replaced by Creator/KarenStrassman, Puchiko's VA in the original dub)˛* Creator/TakehitoKoyasu has probably literally voiced a thousand roles... from a fallen prince who fights for world peace, to a displaced samurai piloting an apocalyptic machine with a lust for fighting. Even a comic relief Ascended Fanboy who wants to shoot fire.˛* Try pigeonholing Creator/NobutoshiCanna. This man has voiced badasses in many flavors, from laid back bad asses (Midou Ban, Lancer), scary bad asses (Guts, Axel Almer (not the silly type), Cao Pi) or goof off bad asses (Silly Axel, Tasuki). If that's not enough, he also has three BruceLeeClone roles on his resume (Maxi, Lee Pai Long, Jann Lee), or someone who sounds like a clown (Nnoitra Gilga), and the voice who yells "LISTEN TO MY SOOOOONGGGG!!!".˛** He's also pulled off the sensitive young Nowaki in Manga/JunjouRomantica, a startling contrast with every character listed above. Canna's capable of bringing the smoove when called upon.˛* Creator/KaoriShimizu manages to completely avoid being pigeonholed. Even though most fans know her for her matured, deep voice of smart women such as Akira, Signum and Lamia, she is also capable of voicing cutesy voices starting from the melancholic Lain, hysterical Lou, and weird YuriFan Hiyori.˛** To make things more obvious, she is also capable of switching her voices from the deep one to the cutesy one in a split second (in Lamia/Aschen's case). Pigeonhole that!˛** Not to mention convincingly voicing in Serial Experiments Lain. And this is her debut role.˛** Recently, she has put her name as one of the cast of VideoGame/TalesOfHearts... as someone who is a prime candidate of a soft-spoken MysteriousWaif.˛* Creator/RyotaroOkiayu is certainly one hell of a man hard to peg down on his roles. One second he plays the roles of bumbling men who is often used for comedy relief, one second he plays villainous roles, one second he plays cool-headed guys, one second he plays TheStoic types, one second he... plays gay-voiced roles.˛* Creator/RieKugimiya is more often a PigeonholedVoiceActor, playing Tsudere characters such as Shana, Louise and Nagi but when allowed to step outside the Pigeonhole she shows surprising range such as Alphonse Elric and both DeadpanSnarker Kurosaki Karin and EmotionlessGirl Nemu from Manga/Bleach. ˛* Creator/SayakaOhara definitely, despite mostly playing mothers, she voiced LargeHam Beatrice in VisualNovel/UminekoWhenTheyCry, HotWitch Yuuko in Manga/XxxHOLiC and, MagicKnight Erza in Manga/FairyTail.˛** Especially noteworthy in VisualNovel/UminekoWhenTheyCry where she voices not only Beatrice but also: while making them all sound unique.˛* Creator/JunFukuyama, has voiced MagnificentBastard Lelouch, Extreme Masochist Sado Taro, BrilliantButLazy Ryner and LargeHam Leopard.˛** Manga/NuraRiseOfTheYokaiClan deserves special mention in showing off his range since he voices both of Rikuo's forms, showing off both the young boy style that he started out with and the more mature voice that became more prominent after landing his role in Anime/CodeGeass.˛* Creator/AyakoKawasumi, from the stoic Saber to the gentle Princess Henrietta, then the AlphaBitch Saki Tenjouin.˛* Creator/HoukoKuwashima is very prolific and has an amazing range, making it hard to find two of her roles that sound the same. Who would have thought that Yurika, Kagura, Sango, and Fllay are all voiced by the same person?˛* Creator/KatsuyukiKonishi has proven that he can do quite a variety of characters. From cold and calculated robot-ninjas to the Leader of the Autobots, Optimus Prime and all the way to the most Badass badass to ever exist in anime. Coincidentally, all three examples have some kind of leader-role...˛** He's the Child-rearing Badass of and THE HERO!!!˛* Creator/TetsuyaKakihara has also proven to be able to do a good number of voices. His probably most famous roles are Simon the Digger and Natsu Dragneel, though he's also done a lot of other voices. In particular, check out how he did Jin Kisaragi and Hakumen.˛** He played the three German (and English) speaking Devices Graf Eisen, Laevatein, and Strada and the Saint Cradle (speaks German, too). He played all of them with a different voice.˛* Creator/NobuyukiHiyama should get some credit too. Sure, his voices doesn't differ much between two characters in the same situation, but his sure can go from completely calm to yelling in the most awesome way you'll ever hear within seconds, and drastically change his voice in the process.˛* Creator/YukiKaida has voiced Bishonen CuteBruiser China, PluckyGirl FriendToAllLivingThings Taiwan, and the Narrator from Webcomic/AxisPowersHetalia. Then there's DudeLooksLikeALady ExtremeOmnivore Shusuke (Shuusuke? Syusuke?) and his CoolBigSis Yumiko from Manga/ThePrinceOfTennis. And HotBlooded BadassAdorable Abe Masahiro from LightNovel/ShonenOnmyouji. While usually typecast as a young bishounen (usually with some form of hidden baddassery, she has had quite a variety of roles.˛* Pika Aizawa, who is reportedly a student training to become a professional voice actress, has played a total of 26 characters so far in her fandub of the VideoGame/Touhou fanime WebAnimation/FantasyKaleidoscope. (Its episodes are initially released without voice acting, only music, sound effects and Japanese subtitles.)˛* In a non-voice actor example, singer Music/JunTogawa can go from sounding like a child to a very deep voice to sweet teenager to operatic singing, often within the same song.˛* It's surprising that this page has gone this long without mentioning Creator/NanaMizuki, who, on top of being able to put her voice into song, has pulled off roles such as Nagisa from Phantasy Star Universe entry Portable 2 Infinity, Tsubomi Hanasaki from Heartcatch Pretty Cure, and Neige Hausen from Super Robot Wars Original Generation: Endless Frontier EXCEED.˛* Creator/YuuichiNakamura is a brilliant example of an actor with huge vocal diversity: he can go from a sadistic Troll Yuki Terumi to a stoic BruceLeeClone Fei Long to a CoolLoser Kyousuke Kousaka, and you can't tell that's it's the same actor doing all these voices.˛* Creator/YoshitsuguMatsuoka has an impressive repertoire, being able to go from expository hero Kirito to dorky harem leads Tomoya Aki and Bell Cranel to perverted Aito and arrogant Soma.˛˛˛˛* Jorge "El Tata" Arvizu dubbed, among others, Barney Rubble and Fred Flintstone; WesternAnimation/BugsBunny, WesternAnimation/WoodyWoodpecker, Maxwell Smart (including the 2007 film), and Choo-Choo Benny the Ball.˛* Creator/GerardoReyero was known for using his bass-baritone voice in ultra serious, by-the-book roles (Cyclops from X-Men, Mamoru "Darien" Chiba from Anime/SailorMoon, Jun Uozumi from Manga/SlamDunk). That, until he did a fantastic work as the loud, cheerful and energetic LargeHam Gai-sensei in Manga/Naruto, and then the BunnyEarsLawyer Ukitake from Manga/Bleach...˛** He's also Captain Hero, The Chief, and Gantu.˛* You might be able to recognize Creator/PatriciaAcevedo's sweet soprano voice very easily, but even then, you can't forget she's done young boys (WesternAnimation/Kissyfur, Yaiba Kurogane from Yaiba, Chaozu from Manga/DragonBall), Magical Girls (Usagi/Serena from Anime/SailorMoon, Sally from Manga/SallyTheWitch), sweet yet strong girls (Alexis/Asuka from Anime/YuGiOhGX, Lisa Simpson, Lizzie Devine), cynical young ladies (Rosa from Manga/Cyborg 009), mother roles (Chichi from Anime/DragonBallZ), or spoiled little kids (Angelica Pickles from WesternAnimation/Rugrats), or Yanderes (Ryoumou from Manga/IkkiTousen), or even badass Action Girls (Princess Adora aka WesternAnimation/SheRaPrincessOfPower).˛* Arturo Mercado has voiced Shaggy, Yoda and Lando, Fred Flintstone, the Beast, Hamm, Petrie, WesternAnimation/DarkwingDuck, Simba, WesternAnimation/BobTheBuilder, Zarbon and a lot more. He's in his early 70s, and his range is comparable to the aforementioned Jorge Arvizu.˛˛˛˛* Márcio Simões does comic characters such as the Genie, Hades, and WesternAnimation/DaffyDuck; badasses such as Creator/SamuelLJackson and Jack Bauer; leaders like Horatio Caine, Jean-Luc Picard, and Donatello; and even villains such as Lex Luthor and David Xanatos.˛** He's also Mike Nelson.˛* Creator/GuilhermeBriggs is usually a LargeHam - his favorite roles to play were WesternAnimation/Freakazoid and Daggett - but he also does serious roles such as Mewtwo from Anime/Pokemon, Franchise/Superman, Transformers Optimus Prime and Dr. Manhattan.˛** And also Him, with which he gleefully chews the scenery when he gets the chance.˛** He's Crow T. Robot.˛** And WesternAnimation/MickeyMouse.˛* Alexandre Moreno is also usually over-the-top (WesternAnimation/BugsBunny, Pinky, WesternAnimation/PussInBoots, Chris Tucker, Max) or comedic (Creator/AdamSandler and Creator/BenStiller) but does the odd serious role (the first Red Ranger, Michael Corleone, Jude Law).˛** He's also Tom Servo.˛* Marco Antônio Costa is the voice actor for Creator/GeorgeClooney, Creator/BradPitt, Creator/JohnnyDepp and also... Plucky Duck, WesternAnimation/Bonkers D. Bobcat, Hugh Neutron, Rex, Stimpy and WesternAnimation/WoodyWoodpecker?˛* Orlando Drummond voices some comedic characters, as Series/Alf, WesternAnimation/ScoobyDoo (his signature role), WesternAnimation/DynomuttDogWonder and WesternAnimation/HongKongPhooey; cool old guys as Creator/GeorgeBurns and SantaClaus and badasses as WesternAnimation/Popeye, The Thing and Venger. He also dubbed comedic and badass variations of a same character: Cringle/Battlecat in WesternAnimation/HeManAndTheMastersOfTheUniverse1983.˛* Carmen Sheila dubbed one of Donald's nephews, annoying/bratty girls (Dee Dee, Elmyra), Tweety, action girls (Cheetara, Steelheart), beautiful live-action actresses like Music/Cher and Jessica Lange, and cool old ladies, like Madame Foster.˛* The late Silvio Navas was versatile within a same show: in the 80's animation WesternAnimation/TheSmurfs, he dubbed Papa Smurf, Farmer Smurf and Vanity Smurf, with a completely different voice for each one (and sometimes leading to TalkingToHimself). In Thundercats he showed his versatility in a single character: Mumm-Ra, as he dubbed both main versions of him (pre and post transformation) as well as most of his male disguises (Pumm-Ra, KingArthur, Third Earth random inhabitants).˛* Rodrigo Oliveira is a rising star in the Brazilian dubbing industry, voicing characters ranging between Owen and Black Panther to Zazu and Malphite.˛* In Portugal, the most notable example is Carlos Freixo, with his range varying from comic characters like WesternAnimation/Goofy, WesternAnimation/DaffyDuck, Sylvester and WesternAnimation/ElmerFudd to hero characters like Simba and Cyborg.˛˛˛˛* In the French dub of WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons, Régine Teyssot voices virtually every woman and child character (except for the Simpson family, Milhouse and Jimbo).˛* Marie-Laure Beneston takes this to an extreme in WesternAnimation/SouthPark, where she voices EVERY female character, as well as a few boys (such as Ike and Pip).˛* Creator/RogerCarel has been ComicBook/Asterix, Series/ALF, C-3PO, Franchise/WinnieThePooh (and Rabbit and Piglet), WesternAnimation/CaptainCaveman, Basil of Baker Street, Rincewind, and a whole bunch of Creator/HannaBarbera and/or Creator/Disney characters. Not to mention his dubbing roles such as Benny Hill and Hercule Poirot.˛* Canadian French-born actor Creator/RichardDarbois is Batman, Anime/CaptainHarlock, the Genie, Oogie-Boogie, the Kurgan, Barf, Film/Hook, Madmartigan, Buffalo Bill, Buzz Lightyear, Russ Cargill, Bruce and Shan-Yu.
