Iyashikei (癒し系) is Japanese for "healing", a term used for anime and manga created with the specific purpose of having a healing or soothing effect on the audience. Works of this kind often involve alternative realities with little to no conflict, emphasizing nature, the mundane and the little delights in life. If anybody talks about a "Moe" genre about CuteGirlsDoingCuteThings, it may very likely also be in this genre.

Even though many iyashikei creations seem to have a strong escapist basis, the goal is not only to offer a means of getting away from daily worries, but to let the audience embrace a calming state of mind by using familiarity and simplicity, and appealing to fundamentally positive emotions. As these works tend to involve normal people in normal situations, this trope often overlaps with SliceOfLife. Other tropes often associated with iyashikei are Arcadia, GhibliHills and SceneryPorn.

Iyashikei often involves the subtler kind of SugarWiki/s and sometimes has Romance overtones. Compare and contrast SugarWiki/WarmAndFuzzyFeeling, SugarWiki/SweetDreamsFuel, and HappinessTropes. Contrast Utsuge (the closest genre to its diametric opposite in Japanese media), Glurge, NightmareFuel and ParanoiaFuel. Works adhering to this trope might function as RealLife BrainBleach. See also Escapism for a very similar concept. A similar term used for video games is cozy games.

See SlowLifeFantasy for a similar genre, the main difference being that the hero has to actively reject adventure.

On the one hand, the creator stated that this is a "new type" of this anime, and the ending is at least hopeful and nice. On the other hand, it's horribly dark and depressing once certain revelations come out, and how happy the ending was depends a lot on how you see it.

* Despite the abundance of scary moments and FridgeHorror as well as the overall series being a more mature take on Love Live!, Tokimeki Memorial and Twinbee and being much more plot driven, especially compared to the regular versions of the non-Pokémon franchises that are involved, this applies to the SliceOfLife styled Main Stories of the fanfiction series Fanfic/TokimekiPokeLiveAndTwinbee (Which is a crossover between Franchise/Pokemon (The first being a franchise which otherwise avoids cutesy Iyashikei like settings.), Franchise/LoveLive, VisualNovel/TokimekiMemorial and VideoGame/Twinbee.) are lighthearted funfests not unlike anime like K-ON!, Lucky Star and regular!Love Live! where the girls (And in the "Boy's Side" stories, guys.) are School Idols and which have lots of fluffy/heartwarming moments scattered throughout in addition to lots of romantic moments to be seen. But, the Side Mon Story arcs, Special Stories and major crossover arcs avert this however...

* Literature/ByTheGraceOfTheGods: An overworked and abused SalaryMan is InAnotherWorldd after suffering an UndignifiedDeath, and told by the gods who summoned him to simply enjoy his new life in the new world.
* Literature/CampfireCookingInAnotherWorldWithMyAbsurdSkill: The bulk of the series focuses on FoodPorn where a guy stuck in a fantasy world cooks for his familiars, which are all essentially cute pets, even the one that is a massive wolf. The story's tone is laid back and while the background hints at darker topics happening, they rarely take the forefront against the cozy cooking tone.
* Literature/IveBeenKillingSlimesFor300YearsAndMaxedOutMyLevel: A woman overworks herself to death and is reincarnated into a fantasy world as an immortal witch. All she wants to do is sleep, eat, visit the nearby village and kill slimes. Doing that last part eventually causes her to max out her level and become the world's most powerful being. She spends the rest of her time doing her best to avoid any kind of adventure in a slice of life story where nothing really happens and any crises are solved easily and with little to no drama or violence. In fact, her new world is so laid back that Azusa herself commented on how chill and unflappable her new world is compared to her old one.
%%* Literature/KumaKumaKumaBear
* Literature/RestaurantToAnotherWorld: A master chef and restauranteur opens his shop on Saturdays to the inhabitants of a fantasy world, serving as a haven for both humans, monsters and supernatural beings alike.
* Literature/SuperCub: A girl with no parents, hobbies, or friends goes on trips on a Honda Super Cub, eventually making friends along the way.

* TabletopGame/GoldenSkyStories is a TabletopRPG that tries to emulate this.

* Franchise/AnimalCrossing is a calm life simulator about a human who moves to a small town filled with talking animals.
* The Aquanaut's Holiday franchise are largely mood pieces set in the oceans without any real lose conditions. The title is referring to your character taking a holiday, after all.
* VideoGame/BarbiePetRescue for the PC is all about saving cute animals and caring for them. A whole part of gameplay is simply petting the animals and playing cute games with them. The rescue and checkup parts are very low stakes; animals are always found healthy.
* VisualNovel/BurlyMenAtSea is a Western example, featuring a group of Nordic brothers going on non-threatening adventures and encountering mostly-friendly monsters and magical entities.
* VideoGame/Calico takes place in a world of peaceful people, docile animals that are entirely tame, and has a relaxed, cozy atmosphere. There's no real conflict and nobody is mean or has a bad attitude.
* VideoGame/CozyGrove features slow-paced daily tasks and a relaxing atmosphere similar to Animal Crossing but with the added element of your neighbors taking the form of ghosts who need your help to complete their UnfinishedBusiness.
* The VideoGame/EndlessOcean series just wants you to swim around underwater and pet/feed various fish in lovely environments. You have goals to accomplish, but the characters stress that you're not under any kind of time limit for them.
* VideoGame/KindWords is a game about writing nice letters to real people to the chill lo-fi music.
* VideoGame/LilGatorGame is about a WorldOfFunnyAnimals, most of them kids just playing. You explore, play, and the only "combat" in the game is hitting cardboard cutouts with toy swords and other playful "weapons." The mood is entirely light and cheerful.
* VideoGame/NekoAtsume, a game where all you do is feed and put out toys for cute cats.
* VideoGame/Nintendogs is a game about taking care of dogs (as well as cats in the sequel). There's no major obstacles at all; all that's involved is feeding your pets, taking them on walks, training them for light-hearted competitions and finding little trinkets on your walks.
* In VideoGame/Proteus, you explore a procedurally generated island. You can walk around and take in the beautiful natural scenery, and there's nothing disturbing the peaceful atmosphere.
* VideoGame/QuiltsAndCatsOfCalico: The original board game is cozy enough with the premise of attracting cute cats by making quilts, but Story Mode makes it cozier. Other than the GreatOffscreenWar being mentioned a few times, you go around sewing quilts for the residents of Scratchington to help them prepare for Tomkitty's Feline Festival. The game's use of PaintedCGI and Creator/StudioGhibli-style 2D visuals adds to its wholesomeness.
* VideoGame/AShortHike is a game about exploring a few islands, talking to the characters, and engaging in non-violent action such as climbing, flying, and racing other characters. The mood is very light, and the characters are almost all very chill and friendly.
* VideoGame/TheSims is this per WordOfGod from original creator Will Wright. Of course, there's options you can take that can make it much less so (and it can become extremely angsty with specific Game Mods, some of which people use because they find the unmodded game boring), but it is more than possible to make your game file this way - if anything it's the canon game mode.
* VideoGame/StardewValley has some angsty and sad themes, but the main point of those is helping those themes get resolved as everyone heals together and you develop your farm and social relationships.
* The VideoGame/StoryOfSeasons franchise (formerly known as VideoGame/HarvestMoon) is one of the most classic examples, and one that would later inspire Stardew Valley. You move to a small farming town, start a farm and begin to socialize with/solve the problems of the local people, as you and they grow together.
* VideoGame/StickyBusiness is a lighthearted business SimulationGame where you run your own sticker shop. Many of the sticker components you use in making stickers are cute and wholesome, and your customers always leave compliments when they order from you.
* VideoGame/TeddyTogether is a lighthearted RaisingSim where you take care of a childlike teddy bear, who wants to know all about you and explore the world. There's also lots of relaxed mini-games, like bathing your teddy bear, cooking new meals and gardening.

* Webcomic/PusheenTheCat: A pastel-colored series of webcomics and web videos with little to no plot, featuring a cast of Ridiculously Cute Critters.
* WebAnimation/RWBYChibi is another Western example. It's especially healing if one comes from watching the original show and all the stuff that happens in it. Sure, it has one or two creepy moments and some dark humor, but in general is a harmless and cute show with chibi versions of RWBY's characters.

* WesternAnimation/BeeAndPuppycat is a series about a dorky, friendly young woman who befriends a cat-dog-thing, whereupon they go accept temp-job contracts across a SugarBowl universe known as Fishbowl Space. Despite being adult animation, the entire show is appropriate for all ages and revels in being soft and adorable the same way WesternAnimation/SouthPark revels in the gross. There's very little in the way of unsympathetic villains or conflict and even the show's villains are of the chatty, non-threatening punch-clock type.
* WesternAnimation/Bluey: This slice-of-life series features cute canine characters, along with several heartwarming friendship and family scenes. The creator stated that he made the show because he missed playing with his children.
* WesternAnimation/ChalkZone is the cutest and sweetest of the Nicktoons lineup. Its' PuniPlush art style and imaginative plots make it a comforting watch after a bad day.
* WesternAnimation/ElinorWondersWhy can best be described as "cute animals doing cute things." The series shows the beauty of nature while also having zero inter-character conflicts (the closest thing the show has to conflicts are Elinor's questions about the world around her).
* WesternAnimation/HarveyBeaks focuses on telling laid-back stories that have heart and emotional connection with the audience.
* WesternAnimation/Kipper exists for the express purpose of being a "refreshing pace for today's busy kids." It has a slow pace along with soothing dialogue and adorable characters.
* WesternAnimation/LittleBear is about a cub and his daily life in the 1930s countryside, along with his family and friends. It has a gentle pace, a classical music soundtrack, and plenty of SceneryPorn.
* WesternAnimation/MaggieAndTheFerociousBeast is a joyful celebration of imagination and friendship. The Ferocious Beast is anything but.
* WesternAnimation/Oswald has one of the kindest protagonists in all of fiction, plus a gentle pace and almost no conflict between characters.
* WesternAnimation/SarahAndDuck is a gently-paced series that focuses on the simple joys of everyday life, backed with muted colors and a relaxing soundtrack.
* WesternAnimation/StevenUniverse, when it's not opting for a sci-fi space opera story or a delve into the psychological corruption of a character, often makes use of this trope by easing its audience into natural, real-life struggles that it calmly gives solutions for, whilst making it clear that not all problems can easily go away. Stand-out examples of iyashikei episodes include "Alone Together", "Sworn to the Sword", "When It Rains", "Same Old World", "Bubbled", "Mindful Education", "Back to the Kindergarten", "Pool Hopping", "Can't Go Back", "Snow Day", "Why So Blue?", "In Dreams", "Bismuth Casual", and "Mr. Universe".
** Steven Universes sense of healing worked so well with audiences, that the Dove Self-Esteem Project teamed up with the Crewniverse to make shorts encouraging body positivity and mental confidence.
* The whole modus operandi of WesternAnimation/SummerCampIsland is "comfort." It achieves just that with its' soothing music, adorable character designs, pastel color scheme, and generally light-hearted tone.
* WesternAnimation/WeBareBears features a trio of bears - a grizzly bear, a polar bear, and a panda trying to live normal lives among humans. Hilarity usually ensues.

* Franchise/WinnieThePooh: There's a reason this series has been a family favorite for years. Sadly some more derivative entries have veered too far towards kiddie show territory to fit in the genre, but when there can easily be museum exhibits that attract people of all ages, you'd be hard-pressed to call Pooh simply a kid's series.
* Series/KodokuNoGurume exists as both manga and a live-action series, but they depict the same thing: the search for a nice place to eat. The worst the setting has to offer is just comedically troublesome clients Goro Inogashira deals with for a few minutes. The rest of the episodes involve his complete satisfaction at restaurants filled with polite and friendly staff and patrons.
