->''"And do you want to know something else? I've never liked your spinach puffs! '''Never!'''"''
-->-- '''Yzma''', ''WesternAnimation/TheEmperorsNewGroove''

So you have two characters who are friends, partners, siblings, or lovers. It appears that they're in some sort of [[WeUsedToBeFriends falling out]] or one of them has [[EtTuBrute betrayed the other]]. You would expect one of the characters to say they now hate the other, but instead they reveal that they already had contempt for them from the beginning. Usually, they will declare that they never liked the character or they always knew how flawed the character was. [[MutuallyUnequalRelation The other is often flabbergasted to hear this.]]

The character's hatred or disdain for their friend/partner can implicate that they may have had problems with the other character, especially if he has quirks, and the reason they were friends/partners with them for a long time was [[TeethClenchedTeamwork out of necessity, not because they like each other.]]

The character declaring this may have been TheLancer, TheRival, or a JerkWithAHeartOfGold who happens to have a begrudging respect for TheHero. To see him [[FallenHero fall on dark times]] may be shocking, but this is just an excuse to express his dislike for the RivalTurnedEvil.

In other ways, the character who expresses their ill will for the hero may not hate them at all. They only declare that they hated the hero as a [[LameComeback lame retort]] against the other character severing all ties. It's no surprise that this trope can show you one (or two) characters never really see eye to eye to begin with anyway.

In addition, this trope may be utilized by characters other than the heroes; for example, a BigBad's henchman may invoke this trope when learning of his superior's death, as a way of showing that [[PunchClockVillain he's not quite devoted to the cause]], or because his boss [[BadBoss wasn't a very good guy anyways]].

Can be a part of a TheReasonYouSuckSpeech. This can also be a part of a MotiveRant if the character reveals his disdain for the hero. This can well likely appear in a FeudEpisode or an AchillesInHisTent plot. Expect one of the VitriolicBestBuds to execute this trope if their friendship is destroyed. Compare FalseFriend if the character turning on the friend was his enemy all along. Often related to DyingDeclarationOfHate. See also WasItAllALie. May be provoked by a DyingReconciliation.

'''As a reveal trope, expect unmarked spoilers.'''

* In a mid-2000s commercial for Coca-Cola, two girls, who have been [=BFF=]s forever, decide to celebrate by breaking out some Coke, but when one of the girls says she didn't bring any, her friend suddenly turns on her, saying she never liked her, causing both of them to break into a verbal fight.

[[folder:Anime & Manga]]
* ''Anime/{{Ace Attorney|2016}}'': In the third episode of the "Recipe for Turnabout" arc in the second season, it seems as though Furio Tigre and Viola Cadaverini are in love with each other, but after getting off the phone with his boss, Tigre says "This is all that gloomy bitch's fault!" loudly enough for Viola to overhear him. It turns out that Tigre had accidentally hit Viola with his scooter, and her grandfather Bruto forced him to pay for Viola's operation, [[spoiler: resulting in Tigre becoming desperate enough for money that he ended up killing Glen Elg to steal the MC Bomber virus and sell it on the black market]].
* ''Manga/AttackOnTitan'': In the final arc, [[spoiler: Eren purposely [[InvokedTrope invokes this trope]] by telling Mikasa -- who has blatantly been in love with him since the beginning of the series -- that he's always hated her, in order to [[BreakHisHeartToSaveHim motivate her to oppose him]] when he launches his coup d'etat. He later admits it ''was'' a lie, and that he does reciprocate her feelings, but he knew that if he didn't drive her away before carrying out his plans, she, Armin, and likely the rest of the Recon Corps would have followed him into the proverbial fire and likely ended up dead as a result.]]
* In ''Manga/BlackClover'', shortly before the culmination of his EvilPlan, Licht reveals to Rades, Sally and Valtos, who have followed his orders without question in the hopes that they would be able to get revenge on the Clover Kingdom, that he [[MisanthropeSupreme despises]] ''[[MisanthropeSupreme all]]'' [[MisanthropeSupreme humans]], even those from the Eye of the Midnight Sun. Before they have time to properly process his words, Licht sacrifices them.
* In ''Manga/{{Bleach}}'', in the flashback when [[BigBad Aizen]] reveals [[ItWasHisSled that he is a traitor]], his Captain, Shinji, tells him that he always knew Aizen was no good and never liked him. The entire reason he chose Aizen as his lieutenant was to keep an eye on him. Aizen smugly tells Shinji that his distrust is exactly why Shinji never noticed that Aizen had secretly replaced himself with a doppelganger months ago; [[OutGambitted by never allowing himself to like or get to know Aizen, Shinji was unable to see any strange behavior after the switch]].
* In the third ''Anime/CyberCityOedo808'' OVA, Benton (one of the three BoxedCrook protagonists) ignores his orders. Sengoku is ordered to kill him if he doesn't stand down (which he won't) and bluntly invokes this trope [[spoiler: luckily Gogol (who hadn't been given any orders) shows up and knocks Sengoku out]].
-->'''Sengoku:''' All right, I never liked you anyway. ''[raises gun]''
* In ''Anime/CodeGeass'', after Rolo attempts to console Lelouch after the [[spoiler: apparent]] demise of the latter's full-blooded little sister Nunnally, Lelouch flips out and admits he never liked him for being a fake replacement sibling.
* In ''Anime/CrossAnge'', after joining Embryo's side, Chris admits her hidden resentment towards her friends Hilda and Rosalie, who she felt always treated her like a third wheel.
* Played with in ''Anime/DeathNote'' where Aizawa screams angrily at L, "I ALWAYS HATED YOU RYUZAKI!" But L rebuts nicely with, "That's such a shame. Because I always liked you, Mr. Aizawa."
* ''Manga/DeliciousInDungeon'' features a straight and inverted example, both in regards to Laios.
** When Shuro declares his intent to hand Marcille over to the authorities [[spoiler:for practicing forbidden magic]], Laios protests. This leads to a fight between them where Shuro admits that he always found Laios irritating, [[OnceMoreWithClarity using moments that Laios had earlier used to describe their friendship]]. That being said, after the fight is over, it's clear that while Shuro hates how dense Laios is, he doesn't actually hate him and does still consider him a friend.
** In Chapter 76, Kabru (who has spent the series acting polite to Laios but deriding him to others) attempts to keep Laios from leaving by admitting that he wanted to be friends with him. His reaction to his own words indicates that it was a genuine slip of the tongue and not just him trying to convince him to stay. Kabru even admits that he had made a number of attempts to do so in the past, but Laios hadn't even remembered his name until recently.
* Frieza and Cooler from ''Manga/DragonBall'', despite being brothers, only have one thing in common: Neither of them can stand their own family.
** In Cooler's case, while he makes it clear that he has a lot of disdain for his brother, Frieza, it isn't until after Frieza is dead that his hatred for him and their father truly comes out when he pridefully tells Goku that had Goku [[spoiler:(actually Trunks)]] not killed him, Cooler would have instead. All because King Cold never loved him or had as many expectations in him as he did in Frieza.
** In Frieza's case, shortly after [[spoiler:being resurrected by the Dragon Balls]] and regenerated by the Frieza Force in ''[[Anime/DragonBallZResurrectionF Resurrection 'F']]'', some members opt to return to earth and revive King Cold (after he was murdered by Trunks years ago). Frieza, however, rebukes their concerns by claiming that his father means nothing to him and that he would be more than happy to rule the universe without him.
* In ''[[Anime/FLCLProgressiveAndAlternative FLCL Alternative]]'', [[spoiler:Pets does this to Kana in the penultimate episode, before giving TheReasonYouSuckSpeech that deconstructs Kana's actions throughout the rest of the series]]. Notably, this conflict does not get resolved, as she chooses to leave [[spoiler:the planet]] without trying to patch up the relationship first.
* In ''Manga/FruitsBasket'', Isuzu "Rin" Sohma's parents seemed like the ideal GoodParents for much of her childhood. That all fell apart one day when Rin innocently asked her parents if they were really as happy as they seemed to be. [[ArmorPiercingQuestion With just that question]], her parents snapped and became [[AbusiveParents horribly abusive]] towards her afterwards, revealing that they had always resented having a daughter with the Sohma family's HereditaryCurse and had never truly loved her.
* ''Manga/IsItMyFaultThatIGotBullied'': [[ImpliedTrope Implied]]. Shinji Suzuki is a successful banker and is popular with his boss and coworkers because he is ruthless and handles cases where a normal banker would be sympathetic towards the client. The end of the story is the final chapters, where when Shinji's mistress and former victim revealed him to be a cheater and a bully to his boss and coworkers, they were all horrified and disgusted. Shinji Boss denied him the promotion he wanted and demoted him. His coworkers started to ignore him, refuse to talk to him, and be threatened by him. But some of the coworker's words, like one of them saying that they don’t have to suck up to him anymore and stating he didn’t get his former job on merit, hinted that his coworkers had a disliking for him before to revealed. It’s heavily implied that even though his coworkers and boss previously admired Shinji for how much money he was making the bank and his ruthless personality, they also slightly disliked him for some of his cruelty and how bossy he could be towards his coworkers. When his boss and coworkers saw firsthand what a monster he was and lost respect for him, that dislike for him rose to the surface and became hatred because of how much of a monster he was.
* ''Manga/JoJosBizarreAdventureGoldenWind'': In the Sleeping Slaves [[HowWeGotHere prologue-of-an-epilogue]], Narancia states upon receiving news of Luca's death that he always hated him. While Bucciarati tells him [[NeverSpeakIllOfTheDead not to say such things out loud in the gangsters' world]], it can be easily assumed that he shared the same feelings, as Luca [[TheAggressiveDrugDealer sold drugs to children]].
* In ''Manga/KitchenPrincess'', Najika is [[AllOfTheOtherReindeer shunned]] by most of her "elite" classmates for her lack of prestige. Her only apparent friend is Akane, a model who pretends to like Najika but in reality only gets close to her [[BitchInSheepsClothing to try and humiliate her]]. During the school's Christmas party, Akane declares that she has always hated Najika, causing her to have a HeroicBSOD that almost [[spoiler: drives her to quit the school]].
* In the climax of ''Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanoha'', the BigBad EvilMatriarch Precia declares to her LoveMartyr of a daughter Fate that she has actually always hated her and manipulated her emotions all along for her own goals, before abandoning her altogether. Needless to say, [[BreakTheCutie Fate breaks]].
* In ''Anime/MyOtome'', Tomoe had secretly been sabotaging Arika to make her life at Garderobe miserable in order to stop her from ([[ImaginaryLoveTriangle in her mind]]) interfering with her crush on Shizuru. When they meet again after the former defects to the villains who took over their academy, Tomoe declares that she never liked Arika or any of her friends, and dedicates her remaining screentime to trying to kill Arika.
* ''Manga/{{Naruto}}'':
** Sasuke's big brother Itachi slaughters their whole clan (including their parents), traumatizing the young Sasuke. When Sasuke (who had adored his big brother) asks why he would do this, Itachi says that he was EvilAllAlong and only ''pretended'' to be the loving big brother and he actually despised Sasuke the whole time. [[spoiler: This is later revealed to be completely untrue. Itachi was just acting like a jerkass to be a StealthMentor for his little brother, as this was the only way he could be spared by the massacre Itachi committed on the orders of his village government.]]
** When Gaara was a child ostracized by everyone, his maternal uncle Yashamaru was the only one who treated him like a human being. At least until he tried to assassinate Gaara, with his dying words being that he secretly hated him for killing his sister. [[spoiler:Later on, his father, revived by the Impure World Resurrection jutsu, reveals that he ordered Yashamaru to assassinate and lie to Gaara as a SecretTestOfCharacter and that his uncle did in-fact care about him.]]
* In [[Manga/NeonGenesisEvangelion the manga version]] of ''Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion'', Gendo Ikari admits that he always hated his son Shinji because his existence meant that he was no longer the only thing his wife Yui loved.
* In ''Manga/OnePiece'', Captain Kuro reveals to Kaya when confronted by the latter that he hated every moment of serving as her butler and taking care of her and only "endured" it in order to gain access to her fortune.
* ''Anime/PokemonTheOriginalSeries'': In "Island Of The Giant Pokémon", after several episodes of Meowth posing as a LeaderWannabe, he, along with Jessie's and James' and Ash's Pokémon, end up separated from their trainers in the forest. When Meowth tries to take command to go after Pikachu, Ekans and Koffing make it clear they only put up with him so long as Jessie and James were around and that [[PunchClockVillain they don't actually have anything personal against Pikachu and the rest]], citing, "There are no bad Pokémon, only bad trainers." When Meowth gets caught by Ash's Pokémon (and later the giant Pokémon), they gladly abandon him to his fate.
* ''Anime/{{Promare}}'': Kray pretends to play the role of a mentor to Galo while his facade is up. The moment he drops it, he reveals just how much Galo's entire existence and continued survival infuriates him.
* In ''Manga/VinlandSaga'', Askeladd's men turn against him to save their own hides against an army they could never defeat. Askeladd returns them this message:
-->'''Askeladd:''' ''"You all and I have been together for a long time, up until this day. We laughed together, drank together, found our way out of many hellholes together. And I never told any of you about this, but for the last ten years we've been together [[PreAssKickingOneLiner I hated every single last one of you]]."''
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Comic Books]]
* ''ComicBook/AndersonPsiDivision'': In "Satan", Dredd says to Anderson that they were never friends and that he only "tolerated" her after she [[spoiler:resigns as a judge]]. He later recants when she's injured.
* Played for laughs in ''ComicBook/TheAuthority'': When a massive tidal wave hits New York, a firefighter, convinced he's going to die, confesses to his partner that he's been behind every terrible prank on him for years and even sleeping with his wife. He's stunned when his partner says he doesn't care as [[LoveConfession he's been in love with his tormenter]] since the day they met. One can only imagine the awkward conversation when they're rescued by Apollo.
* ''ComicBook/TheAvengers:'' In issue #2, Iron Man tells Hulk, when he thinks he's turned on the team, that he thought it was a mistake letting him onto the team anyway (for the record, no one actually invited the Hulk to begin with -- he invited ''himself'' before anyone else did).
* In ''ComicBook/CivilWar2006'' and various other crossovers, it seems half of ComicBook/TheAvengers always secretly hated the other half.
* In Ninjette's reminisces in ''ComicBook/{{Empowered}}'' special ''Nine Beers with Ninjette, [[spoiler:as Ninjette is leaving her clan, she asks her "best friend" Oyuki-chan to accompany her...only for Oyuki-chan to tell Ninjette that she never liked her and has always despised her]].
* In ''ComicBook/JusticeLeagueCryForJustice,'' when they arrive in Gotham, Franchise/GreenLantern Hal Jordan admits to ComicBook/GreenArrow that he never liked Franchise/{{Batman}}.
* In ''ComicBook/OriginalSin'' [[spoiler:Nick Fury's LMD says this to Bucky as the latter kills the former.]]
** Wolverine says this about Bucky [[spoiler:after coming across the murder scene.]]
** And the Punisher says this about Bucky [[spoiler:after seeing him holding Nick's head in his hand.]]
* ''ComicBook/SonicTheHedgehogArchieComics'': Though their interaction is fairly sparse when tensions run high and Geoffrey St. John begins throwing accusations of treachery at the Freedom Fighters Antoine punches him. Antoine admits that he never liked Geoffrey, viewing his position as too convenient and his appointment as disrespectful to the previous owner of the role, Antoine's father.
* ''ComicBook/ThePunisher'': An early story features a Mafia don named Fortunato and a mook walking up to a booby-trapped door. As they open the door and see the bomb about to detonate, the mook turns to his boss and says "I just want you to know: for the last two years, I've been with your wife".
* ''ComicBook/{{Invincible}}'': After [[spoiler:Omni-Man's]] [[EvilAllAlong true colors]] are revealed, the Immortal bitterly admits that he never really liked him. [[spoiler:Omni-Man]] says that the feeling was mutual, then [[spoiler:kills Immortal ([[ResurrectiveImmortality who gets better]]).]]
* ''ComicBook/SensationComics'': In the ComicBook/WonderWoman feature, Don Enrago acts like he's a strict teacher who cares about his students, but it's eventually revealed that he despises the young women he's teaching as they're learning to fight and in college instead of getting married and being submissive housewives when he sabotages their equipment.

!!!{{Crossover}}s
* In ''Fanfic/CardcaptorRad'', [[spoiler:Sideways]] cruelly tears into the hero once confronted with evidence of their betrayal, asking whether [[DidYouActuallyBelieve he actually believed]] that they cared about him.
* ''Fanfic/TheCatacombsOfZalgo'': After Applejack [[TheReasonYouSuckSpeech calls out Jack]] for his selfish attitude, Jack screams at her and the rest of the ponies about how he never wanted to save them.
* ''Fanfic/TheManyDatesOfDannyFenton'': In ''Danny and Kim'', when Vlad is exposed, Maddie reveals that she never actually liked him and only put up with him because he was Jack's friend. Needless to say, learning that the woman he's been crazy about since meeting her only put up with him because of a man he felt stole her from him leads to Vlad [[VillainousBreakdown snapping]].
* ''Fanfic/NeitherABirdNorAPlaneItsDeku'': In public, Alexis Lois "Lexi" Luthor and Wiktoria Fries appear to be best friends. But it's all part of the upper-class posturing both have become used to; they secretly despise each other, and only pretend otherwise for the sake of keeping up appearances.

!!!''WesternAnimation/{{Amphibia}}''
* ''Fanfic/AMothToAFlame'':
** When strangling Sasha while in the midst of a VillainousBreakdown, Marcy admits to '''''enjoying''''' it, mentally reflecting on how she's always hated playing second fiddle to her for Anne's friendship. And with what she thought to be her last words [[spoiler:after King Andrias accidentally stabs her]], Marcy tells Anne she '''''hates''''' her.
** Later on, when the Wus and Waybrights confront the Boonchuys about how they were LockedOutOfTheLoop regarding their daughters' disappearance, Grace Wu declares that she'd always believed Anne wasn't "good enough" to be Marcy's friend, [[PoliticallyIncorrectVillain insulting her Thai heritage]]. Oum later remarks to herself that she honestly didn't care for Grace all that much.

!!!''WesternAnimation/DannyPhantom''
* ''Fanfic/DannyPhantomStranded'':
** Stella initially approved of Star's friendship with the A-Listers and was disappointed when her daughter revealed she cut ties with them. As the series progresses, however, she comes to agree with Star.
*** In "Cursed", Star mentions that after she explained to her parents in detail how Kwan was a neglectful and sometimes unfaithful boyfriend, Stella eventually accepted that Danny is a much better boyfriend for her.
*** In "Visited", prior to her thinking she might not survive standing up to her mother, Stella tells Star that Paulina is not welcomed at her funeral, admitting that the more she spends time with Paulina, the more she's beginning to hate her. The contrasts the beginning of the series, where Stella believed Paulina was a close friend to Star and tried to be welcoming to her when she began hanging out with Colette. This implies that Stella now understands how horrible Paulina is and why Star ended their friendship.
*** Finally in "Blackmailed", Stella admits to everyone that she never liked Dash Baxter and considers him the prime suspect in framing Team Phantom, since she wouldn't be surprised by him stooping to such lows.
** Stella looked up to her mother-in-law Joy, seeing her as a second mother, and admits she came to love her much more than her biological mother, [[AbusiveParents Beatrice]]. But in ''Traveled'', Joy reveals that she was only ever nice to Stella because of her marriage to Johnathan. Once Stella cheated on and left him, Joy had no more reason to pretend she cared about her.
* ''Fanfic/DannyPhantomVsTheParanormal'': Upon learning that Sam was responsible for the accident that created Danny Phantom, Maddie reveals that she never approved of Sam's friendship with her son. She also blames Sam for keeping the Fentons LockedOutOfTheLoop, meaning that Maddie and her husband were unknowingly hunting and terrorizing their own son. Maddie warns Sam that she's more than willing to convince her parents to ship her OffToBoardingSchool, not caring how Danny might react to that.

!!!''Manga/DeathNote''
* ''Fanfic/{{Fade}}'' has L tell Near, Mello, Matt and Beyond that he always hated them, along with the notion of having any successors at all.

!!!''Franchise/FireEmblem''
* ''Fanfic/ABrighterDark'': Flora, dying from her wounds in the aftermath of the Ice Tribe rebellion, refuses Elise's healing and uses her [[DyingDeclarationOfHate last words]] to tell Corrin how much she hated being forced to serve under a SpoiledBrat of a princess of a tyrant king who enslaved (and just recently destroyed) her people. The fallout of the events of the battle cause Corrin to have a brief HeelRealization and spend the following chapters [[CallingTheOldManOut angry at Garon for tricking her (again)]] and depressed at herself for not doing anything about it.

!!!''WesternAnimation/TheGhostAndMollyMcGee''
* ''Fanfic/AnUnpleasantSurprise'': Sharon mentally notes she never did like [[HeteronormativeCrusader Daniel and Tiffany Harris, Ashley's parents]]. She always found them to be noisy, opinionated, and judgmental, only putting up with them for Molly's sake because she was friends with their daughter at the time. When the [=McGees=] cut ties with them, she only regrets that Ashley picked up her parents' homophobic views and hurt [[LipstickLesbian Molly]] with it.

!!!''Literature/GrandmasterOfDemonicCultivationMoDaoZuShi''
* ''Fanfic/TheConcubineMoChronicles'':
** Given how Wei Wuxian broke his brother's heart, Lan Xichen utterly ''despises'' him, and is pleased at the prospect of Lan Wangji moving on and falling in love with somebody else.
** Qin Su seems to secretly despise Mo Xuanyu, as it is very possible that he was involved in Zhao Lingling's attempt to [[FrameUp make it appear]] that she's far too violent and unstable to serve as a concubine.

!!!''Literature/HaruhiSuzumiya''
* ''[[https://archiveofourown.org/works/951402/chapters/1860796 The Coin]]'':
** {{Downplayed}} when Haruhi finds out about the conspiracies surrounding her. Yuki, Koizumi, and Mikuru don't ''hate'' her, but they were only ever around to keep an eye on her, their lives have been constantly shaped by that duty, and they remain terrified that she might use her powers to unmake their worlds (even if they are reasonably confident she won't). Haruhi nearly has a breakdown three separate times talking to them and realizing that she never knew how much her mere existence, not even ''using'' her powers, was affecting their lives.
** On the other hand, she nearly has a breakdown when talking with Kyon when she realizes [[spoiler:he's in love with her, and he's known she loved him too for a while. 122!!!''Franchise/MarvelCinematicUniverse''
* ''Fanfic/TheFourthOfJuly'': Upon learning that [[spoiler:Neal Tapper]] is an agent of HYDRA, Natasha remarks that she'd always considered them to be a tool, and figured there was a good reason why she hated them.
* In ''Fanfic/LegacyDocSuess'', Peter's goodbye video addressed to Tony (and free to view to the entire world) was made to keep Tony from getting away with his terrible parenting.

!!!''WesternAnimation/MiraculousLadybug''
* One [[FandomSpecificPlot/MiraculousLadybug Fandom-Specific Plot]] is for some of Marinette's classmates to be secretly jealous of her successes. Rather than being sincerely taken in by Lila's BlatantLies, they latch onto her claims as an excuse to bully and belittle Marinette, eventually revealing the truth about their feelings towards her. [[https://sturchling.tumblr.com/post/643675412850999296/ This untitled work]] and [[https://sturchling.tumblr.com/post/650028336123461632/ its sequel]] serve as one example, with Marinette only finding out about the plan in the follow-up and being DisappointedByTheMotive.
* ''Webcomic/DadVillainAU'': During the charity ball arc, the Dupain-Cheng bakery recieves a mysterious anonymous commission for a display featuring Miraculous-themed treats. While Marinette doesn't know the significance of how they're decorated, Gabriel, being one of the few who [[RippleEffectProofMemory recalls the original timeline]], ''does'', and angrily confronts her. In the process, he declares that "I've always ''hated'' that bakery of yours!"
* ''[[https://archiveofourown.org/works/46817137/chapters/117923854 Hold on til May]]'': In Chapter 5, Adrien reveals in a blistering MotiveRant that he secretly sees all of his classmates as GullibleLemmings whom he can manipulate into giving him the "ideal high school experience" he's always dreamed about. To this end, he's hellbent on forcing Marinette to return after she transferred out -- not because he cares about her, but because she's useful for keeping the rest of the class in check.
* PlayedWith in ''Fanfic/{{The Wolves in the Woods|MiraculousLadybug}}'' when Alya's parents learn that their daughter secretly [[TallPoppySyndrome resented Marinette's success]]. So much so that when Lila falsely claimed that Marinette was bullying her, Alya ''leapt'' at the opportunity to 'knock her down a few pegs' by [[ToxicFriendInfluence convincing their classmates]] to turn upon her. All despite [[spoiler:''knowing'' the whole time that Lila wasn't telling the truth]]. When this comes out, Alya insists that she still cares about Marinette, and just 'wants her bestie back'; after learning how thoroughly she betrayed her, however, her parents show NoSympathy, with Marlena making clear that she has no right to expect forgiveness after what she's done, much less call herself Marinette's 'friend'.

!!!''WebAnimation/RedVsBlue''
* In ''Fanfic/RecoveryNone'', while being held at gunpoint by a paranoid Wash, York and South admit that they both hated each other, with the latter admitting that she's actually trying to get Wash to shoot them both since she feels that getting York killed too would make her death WorthIt.

!!!''WebAnimation/{{RWBY}}''
* ''Fanfic/{{Arcanum}}'': Before [[spoiler:his death]], Ozpin secretly met with the King of Vale, leaving him with specific instructions to ensure that Goodwitch ''never'' becomes the Grand Arcanist, revealing that he didn't trust her to be capable of handling the position. The King subsequently [[spoiler:honors the deal by using his veto power for the first time in history to stonewall her appointment]].

!!!''Franchise/ASongOfIceAndFire''
* ''Fanfic/TheKingNobodyWanted'': Garth Tyrell spends some time acting distantly cordial and respectful toward Oswell When, albeit disappointed in his lack of political smarts. In chapter 87, as Oswell prepares to leave on a campaign, Garth reveals that he ''despises'' Oswell and gives him a very bitter, accurate, and drawn-out TheReasonYouSuckSpeech about his many failures as a Kingsguard. Among other things, he hates how Oswell helped Rheager start the war by helping him get Lyanna Stark to marry him under questionable circumstances, for failing to rein in Aerys, and then for leaving the confused, teenaged Jamie to be the only Kingsguard present at the Mad King's side for ''months'' (Garth calls Jamie the best of them for finally snapping and killing Aerys). Oswell is troubled to realize how much of the disdain is warranted and how little his efforts to atone have accomplished so far.

* ''Fanfic/TotalCousinsSeries'':
** Toni struggles to hide her jealousy towards [[spoiler:Zoey]] before it's eventually revealed.

* ''WesternAnimation/TheEmperorsNewGroove'': After Kronk disappoints her once too often, Yzma starts berating him, saying that he's like a big stupid monkey and, worse of all, [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking she never liked his spinach puffs]]. This is actually [[ITakeOffenseToThatLastOne the biggest deal for Kronk]] and finally makes [[GoodAngelBadAngel Shoulder Angel and Devil]] agree that Kronk should do something to stop Yzma.
* In ''WesternAnimation/Frozen2013'', Hans not only reveals he never loved Anna and was just using her, he [[KickTheDog mocks her]] for being so naïve and desperate for love that she agreed to marry him the same day they met (and he was the one who proposed to ''her''), before leaving her to die. Fortunately, Anna realizes there are other people (Kristoff and Olaf the Snowman) who ''do'' care for her. The creators have affirmed that Hans subverts the PrinceCharming archetype by hiding his true persona behind a benevolent facade.
* ''WesternAnimation/LiloAndStitch'': When Nani loses her job she wonders who'd want to work at a "stupid fake luau" anyway.
* ''WesternAnimation/SpiderManAcrossTheSpiderVerse'': [[spoiler: Despite initially showing sympathy to Miles's situation of having to make a hard choice in spite of the shared desire of all Spider Men to want to protect others, once Miles makes him go on a monolithic hunt throughout the multiverse in an attempt to save his father; Miguel lets slip his resentment of Miles's anomalous nature due to being bit by a spider from another universe causing nothing but grief across the multiverse — even going as far as to blame Miles for the death of his world's Spider-Man and allowing Kingpin to cause as much damage as he did to the multiverse despite the fact Miles couldn't really do anything about either at the time.]]

[[folder:Films -- Live-Action]]
* At the end of the [[ShowWithinAShow Movie within a Movie]] in ''Film/TheArtist'', the protagonist declares to the love interest that he never loved her.
* A variation of this can be found in ''Film/TheBoatThatRocked'', The Count challenges Gavin to a game of chicken by jumping off the main mast of the boat, after it is learned Simon's new bride only married him as a means to get close to Gavin, whom she is really in love with. While inching out over the mast, The Count shouts down below, "I never even liked Simon!"
* During the climax of the Corey Haim thriller, ''Film/BlownAway (1992)'', Rich learns that his bad boy brother Wes was working with the Femme Fatale Megan the whole time to make his life a living hell. When Rich tries to reason with his brother, Wes makes it clear that he was never seduced or tricked by Megan, and was well aware of her plans, even helping with some of them. All because deep down Wes hated his bother Rich for being treated like the favorite in the family, despite acting like his loving, encouraging, big brother during the early parts of the film. He even warned Rich about Megan several times, knowing his brother wouldn't listen.
* In ''Film/{{Caddyshack}}'', [[SmugSnake detestably smarmy]] Judge Smails (Ted Knight) and the obnoxious nouveau riche Czervik (Creator/RodneyDangerfield) agree to a partners golf match against each other with $20,000 on the line. Czervik wants golf ace Ty (Creator/ChevyChase) to be his partner for the match. Smails tries to get Ty on his side, pointing out his friendship with his late partner, who was Ty's father, and making an arrogant speech about how people like Czervik just don't belong with their kind. As soon as he's done, Ty declares his side by raising the bet to $40,000:
-->'''Ty''': You know, Judge... my father never liked you.
* ''Film/EmployeeOfTheMonth2004'': Dave murders his "best friend", Jack, revealing that he's secretly despised him ever since the childhood accident that left Dave with burn scars on his right side.
* ''Film/{{Goldeneye}}''. Alec Trevelyan and Film/JamesBond have supposedly been good friends and colleagues before Trevelyan's presumed death during a failed mission. But when it turns out that Alec is, in fact, alive and the villain of the film, his longstanding contempt for Bond is revealed in practically everything he says -- his loyalty to England and [=MI6=], his womanizing (in particular, that it's partly a defense mechanism to avoid his grief over Tracy's death), and even his skills as an agent:
-->'''Alec Trevelyan:''' ''[as he holds Bond at gunpoint, having gotten the upper hand in their fight]'' You know something, James? I was always better.
** The last thing Bond says as his titular home in ''Film/{{Skyfall}}'' is blown up?
--->'''James Bond''': I always hated this place.
* ''Film/TheHitmansWifesBodyguard'': When Bryce, Darius and Sonia arrive at Bryce Sr.'s residence, he immediately comforts Bryce over his bodyguarding failures, has a meal with the three and provides them a safe house. [[spoiler: The whole thing turns out to be a trap for Aristotle, with Bryce Sr. revealed to be a smooth-talking, manipulative man who sees Bryce as a disappointment]].
* In ''Film/LethalWeapon'', Riggs is being lead at gunpoint to the BigBad's hideout by former [[PrivateMilitaryContractor Shadow Company]] commander [=McAlister=]:
-->'''Riggs:''' I ran into some of those Shadow Company pussies in Saigon in '69.
* The romantic, thriller, ''Motives (2004)'', reveals that Emery's best friend Brandon was in love with the woman Emery married since childhood and always hated him for taking her away among other reasons. So he sends an young attactive woman to seduce Emery so he can be unfaithful. Brandon then kills the woman and frames Emery for her murder. His plans succeed. Emery is arrested and convicted of killing his mistress, and his wife leaves him for Brandon after she learned of the affair. The sequel ''Motives 2'' is about how Emery's brother tries to uncover the frame up and save his brother.
* In ''Film/NewJackCity'', Nino is angry after the Carter Apartments scheme fails, because of his second in command Gee Money's poor judgement. But he physically takes his anger out on another member, Kareem Arkbar, and is only stopped from killing him by Duh Duh Duh Man. Afterwards Nino would give the WhamLine:
--> '''Nino Brown:''' I never liked you anyway, pretty motherfucker.
** Later, Nino Brown would claim Arkbar was the mastermind behind the whole CMB operation, which is how he is able to cut a sweet deal for a lighter sentence. [[spoiler: He is killed shorty afterwards, however.]]
* From the ''Film/TheRockyHorrorPictureShow'':
-->'''Magenta:''' "You killed them! But I thought you liked them. They liked you.\
'''Riffraff:''' They didn't like me! They NEVER liked me!!
* In the film ''Film/SteveJobs'', Andy Hertzfeld does this to Steve Jobs in act three:
-->'''Andy Hertzfeld:''' Why do you want people to dislike you?\
'''Steve Jobs:''' I don't want people to dislike me; I'm indifferent to whether they dislike me.\
'''Andy Hertzfeld:''' Well, since it doesn't matter, I always have.\
'''Steve Jobs:''' (surprised and saddened) ...Really? I've always liked you a lot. That's too bad.\
'''Andy Hertzfeld:''' ...Knock 'em dead. (leaves)
** Steve Wozniak did this twice in the film: Once, when Jobs first left Apple and called him an "insulting and hurtful guy"; and again in act three when one of the last things he says before leaving the auditorium is:
--->'''Woz:''' Y'know, when people used to ask me what the difference between me and you is, I'd say, "Steve's the big picture guy, I like a solid workbench." Whenever people ask me now, I just say, "Steve's an asshole." The things you make are better than you are, brother.
* In ''Film/ThisIsTheEnd'', Creator/JonahHill is at first nothing but nice to Jay in that overnice way of someone who knows they aren't liked and is trying really hard to change that opinion. Then he reveals in a monologued prayer to God that he really hates Jay, thinks he's a bad influence on Creator/SethRogen, and wishes he ''died''. Well, his prayer is heard... by a demon. Who comes at night and [[KarmicRape forces himself]] on Hill, leading to him being traumatized and soon after getting DemonicallyPossessed.
* Towards the end of ''Film/WeddingCrashers'', there's a scene where the {{Jerkass}} DisposableFiance gets into an argument with the main character and the love interest. He asks the love interest's dad to back him up, clearly expecting it since the two have seemed to be rather close throughout the whole movie. Instead, the dad turns around and tells the fiancé that he never really cared for him much and he only put up with him because he seemed to make his daughter happy.

[[folder:Literature]]
* ''Literature/BrotherCadfael'': The major twist in "The Pilgrim of Hate" is that the [[spoiler:two inseparable friends, one accompanying his crippled companion to various shrines for healing was actually guarding him against anyone else killing him due to TheOnlyOneAllowedToDefeatYou, the cripple having murdered one of his guardian's friends and sent on a pilgrimage to atone for it. The murderer is carrying a relic that marks him as protected by law, should he lose it the guardian is free to kill him with no consequences]].
* ''Literature/TheCaineMutiny'': Later adapted into a play (as ''The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial'') and then a Creator/HumphreyBogart film, defense attorney Lt. Greenwald gets the mutineers an acquittal, then delivers an epic TheReasonYouSuckSpeech in which he wishes he could have prosecuted them, calling them out as mutineers who derided and ultimately betrayed their captain, the behavior of which that prompted the mutiny being caused by their refusal to support him and writing him off as an incompetent and a DirtyCoward, when in reality he was a severely distressed man whose early service in the Atlantic Theatre [[ShellShockedVeteran left him suffering from some very heavy mental baggage from his long deployment.]]
* ''Literature/{{Discworld}}'': In ''Literature/TheScienceOfDiscworld'', faced with possible imminent death (and then the destruction of the entire universe), the Dean of the Unseen University tells Archchancellor Ridcully he thinks he'd have made a better archchancellor. Makes things a little awkward when they don't die after all.
* ''Literature/DragonBlood'': At the end, there is an epic one by [[spoiler: Garranon, who shared king Jakoven's bed for almost twenty years. He declares that he never loved Jakoven (which should come as no surprise, as their "affair" started when Garranon was fifteen and his parents had been killed, and he and his little brother raped by Jakoven's soldiers. Jakoven apparently counted on UsefulNotes/StockholmSyndrome to ensue), and kills him.]]
* ''Literature/FearStreet'': Many a book will have the twist of the heroine shocked to discover their supposed best friend has been behind the attacks on her. Said friend will reveal she's long hated the heroine on anything from "stealing" the guy she really liked (which the friend never knew) to something either she or her family did to the villain or her family which, again, the heroine was unaware of.
* ''Hotel'' by Creator/ArthurHailey:
** Warren Trent is hesitant about selling his classic St. Gregory hotel to Curtis O'Keefe, owner of a major hotel chain. Trent tells O'Keefe that it's not just him, it's the slews of loyal employees who depend on him and he treats as family. He even cites one, the hotel bartender who's been with him for decades and he trusts totally. O'Keefe responds by noting the bartender has been robbing Trent blind for almost all that time, complete with evidence. Trent confronts the bartender and fires him. At which point, his "trusted friend" snarls that he never liked Trent being so high and mighty and that many on the staff consider him a tyrant, not "like family."
** It's added on when Trent gets a report from O'Keefe, noting that slews of people on the staff he considered friends have also been stealing from him and he was blinded by his supposed admiration of their "loyalty" to figure it out.
* ''Literature/InCryptid'': [[spoiler:Naga]] has been Alice's friend and MysteriousBacker for over 50 years, even [[spoiler:visiting her family for Thanksgiving when she was a child (despite being a giant SnakePerson)]]. When she realizes he's been influencing her away from possibly finding her husband Thomas, which would bring an end to her decades of [[DimensionalTraveler dimensional travel]] via PowerTattoos provided by him, she digs deeper and finds out [[spoiler:he'd been [[LaserGuidedAmnesia modifying her memories]] to make her easier to control, and using her to harvest magic through an extremely painful process]]. At the end of ''Spelunking Through Hell'', Alice and Thomas confront him, and he shows his contempt for not only her, but all mammals.
* ''Literature/{{Mockingjay}}'': President Alma Coin of District 13 had never been particularly warm towards Katniss Everdeen, but for most of the story their goals seem largely in alignment, and both are willing to bend their normally unyielding mentalities to get the job done. This all changes when Katniss' squad loses a member during a mission in the Capitol and Coin sends a mentally unstable Peeta Mellark - who had already tried to kill Katniss in a fog of brainwashing - to fill the slot. Katniss and her squad recognize the potential danger immediately, and her commander Boggs does his best to clarify the situation for her:
--> '''Boggs''': "Here's as much as I know. The President doesn't like you. She never did. It was Peeta she wanted rescued from the arena, but no one else agreed. It made matters worse when you forced her to give the other victors immunity. But even that could be overlooked in view of how well you've performed... Sometime in the near feature, this war will be resolved. A new leader will be chosen... If your immediate answer isn't Coin, then you're a threat."
--> '''Katniss''': "So she'll kill me to shut me up."
--> '''Boggs''': "She doesn't need you as a rallying point now... There's only one last thing you could do to add fire to the rebellion... Give us a martyr to fight for."
* It's revealed in ''Literature/WhileMyPrettyOneSleeps'' that Sal has always secretly resented his childhood friends Myles and Devin, especially the former, believing they always looked down on him and treated him like a joke, though he's done an excellent job of hiding this for practically all their lives. It's indicated that Sal is [[GreenEyedMonster jealous of his friends]], because they were able to make successes of themselves off their own merits, while Sal was only able to get his big break by stealing from Myles' wife. Additionally, Sal has had four failed marriages, while Myles was happily married to a beautiful and sophisticated woman with whom he had a child, with Sal stating that Myles never deserved Renata (Devin, a Catholic priest, is celibate by choice).
* ''Literature/WonderWomanWarbringer'': Jason doesn't like Theo at all, he considers him useless. The only reason he pretended to befriend him was so that he could keep an eye on Theo's father.

[[folder:Live-Action TV]]
* This is the major twist of ''Series/BetterCallSaul'' season 1. [[spoiler:The tough but loving Chuck revealed that he was the one who kept sabotaging Jimmy's career as a lawyer because of his disdain for Jimmy's past as a con man.]]
** In Season 3, Chuck ends the series completely checkmated by Jimmy and can't resume work as a lawyer because [[TheDogBitesBack Howard found a way to kick him out of their law firm]]. In his last conversation with Jimmy, he drops one of the harshest lines in the series.
---> '''Chuck:''' "[[BlatantLies I don't want to hurt your feelings.]] But the truth is... you've never mattered all that much to me."
* In the ''Series/BlackadderGoesForth'' episode "General Hospital", Nurse Fletcher-Brown is fussing over the injured George, calling him a brave boy, much to Blackadder's disgust. When alone with Blackadder she drops the "fluffy bunny act" and admits she thinks George is just an idiot.
* In ''Series/BuffyTheVampireSlayer'', the first person Spike turned after becoming a vampire was his own sickly, beloved mother. However, becoming a soulless vampire allows her to reveal that she's always been sick of his smothering attention and awful poetry, and wouldn't have put up with it if she'd had the strength. Of course, [[AmbiguousSituation her being a vampire means there's no way to know]] if those were her true feelings when she was alive or just enjoyed hurting Spike ForTheEvulz.
* Several times on ''Series/{{Castle|2009}}'', the killer will turn out to be the trusted friend or loved one of the victims who turned out to have actually hated them.
** In "Linchpin/Pandora," Castle is rocked to discover that [[spoiler: former lover and CIA agent Sophia Turner]] is part of a plot to start a war with the Chinese. When Castle says "you could never turn on your country," [[spoiler: Sophia smiles and ''in Russian'' responds "this was never my country." She's actually a KGB agent who had just infiltrated the CIA when the Soviet Union fell and has been waiting years for a chance to strike at the country she always considered the enemy.]]
* ''Series/{{Cheers}}'':
** In the episode "Second Time Around", Frasier has a new girlfriend (played by Creator/JenniferTilly). She seems very not his type (less intellectual), but he tells his friends she and him are happy together, but an argument ensues and Frasier tells his girlfriend "If I want your opinion, I'll give it to you!", ending the relationship.
** When stuck on a boat with a bomb on it, Carla suggests she and Sam throw Norm to the sharks surrounding them and use that to swim to safety. Norm tells Carla he never liked her.
** Before he leaves the bar for the last time, Robin Colcord tells the entire gang he never really liked them anyway... though it's not as if he was exactly overflowing with affection to begin with.
* ''Series/ControlZ'': In season 3, during an outdoor party, @allyoursecrets sends a message to Raúl through a flying drone. Suddenly, all of the other classmates once again start cursing Raúl, believing that he had something to do with it. Judging by how Raúl snaps back at them, he is clearly fed up with all of the criticism he's been getting lately.
-->'''Raúl:''' You can all kiss my ass!
* At the end of the season 13 premiere of ''Series/{{CSI}}'', Brass gives a [[ImpliedTrope subtle one]] to [[spoiler: his daughter Ellie (who's murdered his ex-wife, was behind the entire plot of the previous season's {{Cliffhanger}} all along and attempted to murder Morgan)]]. By telling them that they've killed the only person he cared for [[spoiler: and the only one who cared for her]].
* On ''Series/{{Eastwick}}'', Joanna gets back together with her ex-boyfriend then uses her magic power to make him tell her why he broke up with her in the first place. She's stunned when he immediately launches into a ''long'' list of her behaviors and faults that he found so damn aggravating.
* On ''{{Series/ER}}'', after being blamed for a patient's death, Susan turns to pal Mark for comfort and support. Only to have him tell her that her issues--confidence, trouble asserting herself, letting senior physicians intimidate her have impeded patient care before and that because of this, she may very well be responsible for this patient's death.
** Similarly, Mark always seemed to laugh off best friend Doug's womanizing behavior. But two major incidents--Doug bedding a medical student, Doug sleeping with a random woman who died of a drug overdose without him ever knowing her ''name''--revealed that Mark was actually quite disgusted with the way Doug conducted his personal life.
* ''Series/TheFreshPrinceOfBelAir'': In the episode "To Thine Own Self Be Blue...and Gold", Philip discovers that his old college friend, Ernest, decided to bribe a city councilman with a BriefcaseFullOfMoney and uses Will to deliver it. Because of this, Philip returns Ernest the briefcase and bluntly tells him to GetOut, leaving Ernest to smugly tell Philip that he was always so damned naïve.
* ''Series/{{Friends}}'':
** Early in season one Monica dates Allan who the rest of the gang all love and want to hang out with. When Monica breaks up with him Allan admits that while he really liked her he couldn't stand her friends and is relieved he doesn't have to pretend to like them anymore.
** In a later episode when Joey is dating Janine, they go on a double date with Chandler and Monica and seem to have a great time, arranging another one. Then, once they're alone, Janine asks Joey how they're going to get out of it, because she thinks Chandler's blah and Monica's loud.
* ''Series/TheHandmaidsTale'': [[spoiler: Esther]] accuses Janine of using her to get to the Putnams' home to see her daughter Charlotte/Angela and not caring about her. She also calls Janine a disgrace. Janine is hurt because all she wanted was to help the other Handmaid to survive.

* A recurring sketch on ''The Late Show with Creator/DavidLetterman'' is for a staffer to come on stage and announce that he's just won the lottery. "So ''[to announcer Alan Kalter]'' fuck you! And ''[to Paul Shaffer]'' fuck you! And ''[to Dave]'' FUUUUUUKKK YOUUUUUU!"
* ''[[Series/{{Mash}} M*A*S*H]]'': In one early episode, Hawkeye tries to kill the boredom by telling Trapper really bad knock-knock jokes; after receiving two such lame jokes, Trapper mumbles, "Hawkeye, I've never liked you."
* In the second season of ''Series/TheMysteriesOfLaura'', Laura is curious why new captain Nancy Santiani would have transferred to a precinct literally across the city from her old spot. Meeting a cop from Santiani's former district, Laura learns that Santiani had been up for a promotion and, at her "farewell party," got drunk to tell her cops what she ''really'' thought about them. No sooner had she sobered up than Nancy learned the promotion had fallen through. Knowing there was no way she could return after that, she took a new spot as far away as she could get.
* In an episode of ''Series/{{Newsradio}}'', Bill says to Dave that there comes a time in every friendship where when one has to say "I never liked you; get lost!"
* ''Series/PartOfMe'': Mónica adopted her niece Elena when she was little and treated her as her own daughter, but due to Elena's [[GreenEyedMonster envious]] and [[ItsAllAboutMe selfish nature]], she grew up resenting Mónica. For years [[BitchInSheepsClothing she hid this]], acting like a dutiful niece while [[EvilNiece plotting behind Mónica's back]], slowly [[TamperingWithFoodAndDrink poisoning her]]. She only shows her true colors to Mónica when Mónica's on her deathbed, just to taunt and horrify her, while also making sure to let Mónica know she's also planning to kill Mónica's daughters, just so she can inherit their fortune. 244[[folder:Music]]
* This was well said in the BreakUpSong "I Never Liked You" by the Music/RogueTraders:
-->Hey! Surprise!\
I never liked you, even when I tried to\
Don't speak now it's my turn baby uh uh\
I never liked you, and I won't pretend to
* Much of the point of the song "You've Got Everything Now" by Music/TheSmiths:
-->''And did I ever tell you, by the way\
I never did like your face\
A friendship sadly lost\
Well, this is true,\
And yet it's false''
* Once again the fairly obvious point of "I Never Really Loved You Anyway" by Music/TheCorrs:
-->''You bored me with your stories\
I can't believe that I endured you for as long as I did\
I'm happy it's over, I'm only sorry\
That I didn't make the move before you\
And when you go I will remember\
To send a thank you note to that girl, oh that girl\
I see she's holding you so tender\
Well, I just want to say\
Just want to say\
I never really loved you anyway''

[[folder:Professional Wrestling]]
* During Wrestling/ChrisJericho's ''Highlight Reel'' on the 3/26/03 edition of ''Wrestling/WWERaw'', Jericho, who had up to that point remained neutral in regards to Wrestling/BillGoldberg despite their history back in Wrestling/{{WCW}}, was recently revealed to be the one who attacked him in a hit-and-run. Jericho explains himself by saying, "Nobody wants you here in the WWE Goldberg, especially me!"
* During the January 2022 feud between Wrestling/RomanReigns and Wrestling/SethRollins, Reigns finally revealed that despite all Wrestling/TheShield reunions throughout the years, all the impromptu team-ups, and despite wanting to with every fiber of his being, he has ''never'' truly forgiven Rollins for betraying and breaking up the stable all those years ago, and never will. Ironically, it was hidden disdain for everyone except ''Rollins'', who knew all along that Reigns still hated him for his actions.
-->'''Reigns''': Chair to my back? Breaking up the Shield... I've tried to forgive you. I really have. But I'll never forgive you for what you did to us. ''I '''hate''' you''.

[[folder:Video Games]]
* During the early parts of ''VideoGame/AviaryAttorney'' it's hard to say what Inspector Volerti thinks of Jayjay Falcon, but at the start of Case Three, it seems like he respects him. He might, but he strongly suspects Falcon is [[spoiler:[[SerialKiller the Viridian Killer]], and he can get an innocent man killed trying to bring that out]].
* In ''VideoGame/DiscoElysium'', the PlayerCharacter's partner in the investigation, [[ByTheBookCop Kim Kitsuragi]], will refrain from commenting on certain annoying quirks or outright distasteful actions from the PlayerCharacter at the time. However, these are still recorded, and he'll bring them up during [[spoiler:the task force intervention]]. Depending on his overall opinion, this may lead up to an ArsonMurderAndLifesaving summation acknowledging that your character is [[BunnyEarsLawyer competent and moral enough to make these eccentricities worth tolerating]], or... not.
* ''VideoGame/DyztopiaPostHumanRPG'':
** Although Akira and Barbados seem to be friends at first, the latter reveals he secretly resents the former for claiming the top Hunter rank despite having no loyalty to Zetacorp and because he knows they have no desire to avenge his brother Kael.
** If the player beats Barbados's data in the Battle Lab, Detritus reveals that he always hated Barbados for being blindly obedient to Zetacorp and sacrificing his own happiness for the sake of succeeding at his career. Ironically, Detritus seems to be one of the few people that Barbados respects.
* In ''VideoGame/TheElderScrollsVSkyrim'', Ulfric Stormcloak, the leader of the Stormcloak rebellion, highly respects Balgruuf the Greater, Jarl of the strategically-important city of Whiterun, understanding the difficult position the city is put into and his reluctance to involve Whiterun into the costly war, though Ulfric also insists that Balgruuf ''will'' have to choose a side eventually, and hoping it will be his. On Balgruuf's part, he actually remains fairly neutral regarding Ulfric, focusing instead on making sure his city stays as far from the conflict as he can get it until [[NeutralNoLonger neutrality is no longer possible]]. And when that day comes, only ''then'' does Balgruuf open up about his true feelings towards Ulfric: He hates the man, and sees him as little more than a barbarian who has sent so many of their fellow countrymen to meaningless deaths, in the name of, at least to Balgruuf, spite from the White Gold Concordat. While the nature of the war is a bit more complicated in truth, Balgruuf's frustrations are understandable, given that he, like many other Empire-aligned holds, wished to keep Skyrim unified so that it may remain strong, in preparation for the day that it might take the fight back to the Thalmor alongside the Empire.
* In ''VideoGame/FarCry6'', the BigBad Anton Castillo, during his revelation that he is [[SecretlyDying dying of leukemia]], says that he always hated kids but was convinced to have an heir after his diagnosis as a way of continuing his legacy. This is despite the fact that his son Diego is seated at the table ''right in front of him'' and seems to respect and love his father to a point.[[note]]Along with a healthy dose of half-fearing Anton, as Anton has some very....[[AbusiveParents interesting]] [[DieOrFly methods]] [[MyWayOrTheHighway of parenting.]][[/note]] However, Diego's nonplussed reaction to this news makes it apparent that he already knew or suspected what his father had planned for him, and, despite it all, the two do have some seemingly genuine bonding moments throughout the game, which makes it ambiguous as to how much contempt Anton holds for his son personally.
* ''Franchise/FinalFantasy''
** ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyX'': While it's made clear through the narration that Tidus disliked and distrusted Seymour Guado from the minute he first met him, he's given the option to openly say as such during the first boss battle with him, where it's revealed that Seymour [[SelfMadeOrphan murdered his own father]].
--->'''Tidus:''' I knew you were bad news from the first time we met!\
'''Seymour:''' [[SarcasmMode Oh, my sincerest apologies.]]\
'''Tidus:''' Seymour!
** ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyXIV'':
*** Upon confronting him in the Praetorium, Nero tol Scaeva reveals his frustration towards Cid nan Garlond always outshining him. Even after he defected from Garlemald, rather than being scorned as a traitor, Cid was revered as a legend while Nero, who stayed loyal, was overlooked in spite of his own achievements. In his words, [[FeelingOppressedByTheirExistence Cid's existence has rendered his own worthless]].
*** Upon the reveal of the Crystal Blades' betrayal of the Scions, [[EvilFormerFriend Ilberd]] reveals his hatred towards Raubahn for "betraying" Ala Mhigo by becoming the Sultana's right hand and moving on from trying to free Ala Mhigo from the Garlean Empire. In ''Hevensward,'' he intends on executing the imprisoned Raubahn for his "betrayal."
*** During the ''Heavensward'' story Hraesvelgr, who has stayed out of the Dragonsong War himself, was believed to be a potential ally in ending the war. However, it is revealed that he actually hates humanity due to Ishgard's King Thordan I and his Knight's Twelve betraying and killing his sister Ratatoskr just to obtain her eyes, and the only reason why he didn't join Nidhogg in the war for revenge is due to his love for Shiva.
* ''VideoGame/FireEmblemFates'': Should [[PlayerCharacter Corrin]] side [[StoryBranching against the family who raised them]], their foster brother Leo will express his hatred for them before facing them in battle, telling a shocked Corrin that he resents them and has ''always'' resented them. Corrin asks if [[WasItAllALie what they'd thought was a close relationship was just a lie]], clearly devastated. Leo doesn't bother answering. [[spoiler: After the battle, however, the trope is [[SubvertedTrope subverted]]. A defeated Leo admits their relationship ''wasn't'' a lie; claiming resentment way just Leo's way of coping with a beloved sibling betraying him. He was jealous sometimes of the attention Corrin received, but never resentful. He still loves Corrin and always has.]]
* ''VideoGame/LiveALive'': In the climax of the Middle Ages chapter, when Streibough reveals himself to Oersted, he also outs himself as the mastermind behind the knight's tragedies, faking the cave-in that supposedly killed him and tricking Oersted into killing the king of Lucrece to [[HatedByAll brand him the kingdom's pariah]]. Once he's done [[EvilGloating gloating]], he then reveals what he truly felt about Oersted: he always resented him for getting all the fame and winning Princess Alethea's love while he remained AlwaysSecondBest to him, and so he set out to ruin his life [[DrivenByEnvy out of envy]] before finally trying to kill him to ensure that Oersted would never stand on his way ever again.
* ''VideoGame/{{Overwatch}}'': Upon killing Reinhardt or Torbjörn, Reaper may sometimes utter, "Never liked you much."
* ''VideoGame/PeretEmHeruForThePrisoners'': While [[AdventurerArchaeologist Professor Tsuchida]] is [[{{Jerkass}} hardly a pleasant person]], his assistant Dr. Kuroe is completely taken aback when Tsuchida reveals that he outright ''despises'' him. Mostly because TheReveal comes ''after'' Tsuchida previously intervened to save his life from one of the pyramid's [[AllCrimesAreEqual judgments]]. Professor Tsuchida [[spoiler:shoots him dead]], then [[MotiveRant rants about]] how he never forgave him for his [[FailureToSaveMurder failure to save his daughter Shizumi]] when she was fatally shot during a terrorist attack.
* In ''VideoGame/PerfectDark'', when a character stumbles across a dead enemy, they will give out a remark "I never liked him anyway."
* ''Franchise/{{Persona}}'':
** ''Videogame/Persona4'': This is done posthumously after the death of Saki Konishi, the girl [[TheLancer Yosuke]] had a crush on and worked at the store his father managed. When they visit her death site, her last thoughts are broadcast loudly. He finds out that she found him to be a real pain in the ass and hated how much he flirted with her and was only nice to him because he was the boss's son. He takes the news hard at first, but later still tries to respect her opinion and bring her killer to justice. [[spoiler:By the time the Investigation Team learns that the TV World only shows what people ''think'' are someone's innermost thoughts, Yosuke's moved on enough that it doesn't even phase him to realize that the "last thoughts" were lies.]]
** ''VideoGame/Persona5 [[UpdatedReRelease Royal]]'': [[spoiler:Rank 8 of Goro Akechi's Confidant has him make one to the protagonist out of [[AlwaysSomeoneBetter envy]].]] Somewhat subverted in that [[spoiler:Akechi considers him a friend, yet still harbors complicated feelings towards the protagonist]].
-->'''[[spoiler:Akechi]]:''' I'm going to be entirely honest with you: I hate you.
* Early on in ''VisualNovel/SayaNoUta'', Fuminori (who is suffering from extreme Agnosia that causes him to perceive everyone and everything as fleshy monstrosities) bluntly tells Yoh, a friend of his who's been crushing on him, that he hates her and wants to never speak to her again because he can't stand being near other people anymore, breaking her heart and {{establishing|CharacterMoment}} Fuminori as a {{Jerkass}}. He admits to regretting it somewhat and not meaning it in his inner monologue, but feels that not having to be around icky monsters makes up for it, and he soon starts growing a genuine disdain for nearly everyone around him.
* ''VideoGame/SlyCooper'':
** [[BitchInSheepsClothing Neyla]] in ''VideoGame/Sly2BandOfThieves'' casually admits to hating the Cooper Gang in the final episode, after it's revealed she's working for the Klaww Gang. She outright tells Sly that she hated having to put a ReasonableAuthorityFigure façade in France and India, and when Arpeggio allowed her to betray them, she was quite pleased. [[spoiler:And then she reveals her hidden disdain to ''Arpeggio himself'', and murders him to become Clock-La.]]
** As revealed in ''VideoGame/SlyCooperThievesInTime'', [[TheSociopath Penelope]] always hated Sly and Murray for their family loot and laid-back nature, respectively, along with their shared friendship with Bentley. [[spoiler:She never loved Bentley, either, seeing him as only a MealTicket towards [[TakeOverTheWorld world domination]] and constantly insults him behind his back.]]
* In ''VideoGame/SoulNomadAndTheWorldEaters'' in the first time that you meet [[EvilGenius Thuris]] he and [[TokenEvilTeammate Gig]] have a discussion, during it, Gig off-handedly mentions that, of his three vassal World Eaters, Thuris was always the one he disliked the most.
* In ''VideoGame/TalesOfSymphonia'', should Presea end up with Regal in Welgaia, they are tormented by an illusion of [[spoiler:Alicia]] and Presea reveals that she hasn't forgiven Regal for [[spoiler:killing her sister]] and is by far the most susceptible to the attempt to break the party, as she agrees with the illusion that Regal hasn't been punished enough for his actions. It takes [[TheHero Lloyd]] appearing to talk some sense into both of them that Presea is able to let go of her anger and Regal can let go of his guilt.
* A variant in ''VideoGame/TeamFortress2'':
-->'''The Spy''': I never really was on your side.
* In ''VideoGame/TriangleStrategy'', Benedict has been loyally serving Lord Symon for at least the past thirty years, and he's done enough good in Symon's service that the people in Wolffort territory have a lot of respect for him. However, near the end of the Liberty endgame, Benedict reveals that [[spoiler:he saw Symon taking in Destra after she became pregnant with King Regna's illegitimate child (Serenoa) as Symon just going along with Regna's plan to cover up his mistakes, and he hasn't really forgiven Symon for "using" Destra]].
* ''VideoGame/XenobladeChronicles'':
** ''Videogame/XenobladeChronicles1'': Mumkhar promptly tells Dunban he always despised him as soon as they meet face to face for the first time since the former's supposed death. Dunban somehow never managed to notice this and [[HorribleJudgeOfCharacter considered Mumkhar a good friend]] despite the entire time we see them together as friends, [[ObviouslyEvil Mumkhar]] is either trying to run away like a coward or having a barely disguised soliloquy about how he wants to steal the Monado and leave him for dead.
** ''VideoGame/XenobladeChronicles3'': Consuls/Moebius D and J/Joran have a seemingly perfect alliance between them for most of the game, though when the latter is being corrupted by Ouroboros into renouncing Moebius at the Cloudkeep, D pins Joran down and berates him for getting carried away, revealing his dislike for him and forces an Interlink upon him.

[[folder:Web Animation]]
* ''WebAnimation/LetMeExplainStudios'': [[SadistTeacher Medusa]], the nickname for Rebecca's High School Drama Teacher, was the head of school's theatre department where she was extremely abusive and vindictive with a totalitarian grip, and treated nearly all her students, ''especially'' [[TeachersUnfavoriteStudent Becca]], like trash. But she still gave her excellent grades in her class. But then, when Medusa refused to cast Rebecca in a play that she was most qualified for in the entire school, she revealed (to other students) that it was because she viewed Rebecca as a Friendless Loser who was "not one of the group". Upon learning this, Rebecca quit [[JerkWithAHeartOfJerk Medusa's]] class for good.

[[folder:Web Videos]]
* Inverted in ''WebVideo/MonsterIslandBuddies'', where King Ghidorah, having pulled a FaceHeelTurn, declared to Godzilla that they will settle their rivalry once and for all. A somewhat bewildered Godzilla replies "Rivalry? Actually, I always liked you."
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Web Comics]]
* In ''Webcomic/MobPsycho100,'' Ritsu seems like the perfect, supportive older brother ([[BigLittleBrother despite being younger]]), but it's revealed to the audience fairly quickly that he's [[GreenEyedMonster secretly consumed with jealousy]] over Mob's PsychicPowers. Later, after Ritsu [[spoiler:gains powers himself]], he tells Mob that he only acted so nice to him because he was afraid of him. Mob can accept Ritsu's anger but insists that his affection must have been ''half'' real -- which, given their speedy reconciliation, is probably correct.
* A variation early in ''Webcomic/TheOrderOfTheStick'': EvilTwin Nale (currently fighting his idiot brother Elan) switches targets with his underling Thog (fighting Roy). Roy notes this was not the best decision Nale could make, as Nale learns [[BeleagueredBoss Roy has been aching to beat the crap out of someone looking exactly like Nale for a very long time.]] Roy makes his dislike of Elan well-known, but Elan is too stupid to notice.

[[folder:Western Animation]]
* ''WesternAnimation/AmericanDad'': Jeff is a NiceGuy for the most part, but despite that, Stan finds him annoying and doesn't even bother trying to hide the fact that he hates him. 332* ''WesternAnimation/BobsBurgers'' had Linda reveal in the season nine opener that she doesn't believe Tina's long time crush Jimmy Jr. is good enough for her, which shocks Tina. Considering Linda's seen how on/off Jimmy Jr.'s attraction to Tina is, up to him rudely snubbing her one Valentine's Day and then coldly dumping the girl he asked out ''in the middle of their date'', Linda's dislike of the boy is more than justified.
* ''{{WesternAnimation/Futurama}}'':
-->'''Bender''': Look, you don't like me, I don't like you-
-->'''Leela''' (surprised): I like you!

* ''WesternAnimation/InvaderZim'': [[VillainProtagonist Zim]] manages to lock [[MinionWithAnFInEvil GIR]] into duty mode. This causes him to rebel against Zim's incompetence and give a line ripe for fan interpretation, especially since he ''seemingly'' goes back to [[GoodIsDumb blissful stupidity]] once he's returned to normal:
-->'''Zim:''' GIR--you were my servant once! Remember?\
'''GIR:''' Yes. ''I didn’t like it.''
* ''WesternAnimation/IronManArmoredAdventures:'' In the Season 1 Finale, as Gene reveals himself to be the true Mandarin, he blasts away Rhodey, stating that he never liked him. Rhodey would later strike back at Gene, stating that he was just starting to like him.

Hank responded that Sauers wouldn't have made it to the championships without him in the first place.
-->'''Hank:''' What in God's name is going on here?!
-->'''Coach Sauers:''' Damn it! I never did like you, Hill! You were a know-it-all and a do-gooder, and your teeny-tiny weak little girly ankle bone snapped in the finals... and you lost me State!

** ''[[Recap/TheSimpsonsS24E21TheSagaOfCarl The Saga of Carl]]'': Carl will occasionally show that he doesn't like Lenny or the other barflies, and this episode is the biggest example; he says the reason he had no problem stealing the winning lottery ticket from the gang is that he never saw them as friends, just guys discussing guy stuff.
** ''[[Recap/TheSimpsonsS32E8TheRoadToCincinnati The Road to Cincinnati]]'': There had always been simmering discontent between Principal Skinner and Superintendent Chalmers (with Chalmers being vocal about it far more often), but here everything bubbles to the surface, resulting in an all-out physical brawl at a bed-and-breakfast.
* ''WesternAnimation/SouthPark'':
** In "Quintuplets 2000," the titular quintuplets call out everyone for how stupid everyone is acting, outright stating that they don't care about them and are only worried about their own self-interest with Stan, Kyle, and Cartman agreeing with them. But the quintuplets then turn against the boys, calling them "the worst of all," as they bring up their constant badmouthing of their home country of Romania and stating that all they cared about is getting the quintuplets to be a part of their circus. They then leave in Oprah's limo to be a part of her book tour.
** While Butters is typically recessive and friendly towards Cartman, there are a few occasions he shows resentment for the abusive treatment he receives from him. 356* ''WesternAnimation/SpeedRacerTheNextGeneration'': When Ranford is arrested, his butler offers testimony against him, which comes as a surprise because Ranford isn't used to hearing the butler speak at all. The butler explains that he never liked Ranford.
* ''WesternAnimation/SpongebobSquarepants'': In the "Fry Cook Games" episode, Spongebob and Patrick, who had a [[FeudEpisode falling out]] goaded by Mr. Krabs and Plankton, wrestle, exchanging lines like "I don't like you!" "I don't like you more!" "I never liked you!" "I a thousand times never liked you!" It comes to an immediate abrupt halt seconds later when their pants fall, revealing they are wearing underwear in the opposite owner's color, causing them to tearfully reconcile.
* ''WesternAnimation/StevenUniverse'': In the episode "Stuck Together", Topaz, a hired bodyguard from Aquamarine reveals that despite her mute and stoic personality, she hates working for her boss because of how horrible she is to her. After hearing Steven and Lars commiserating with one another over their fate, she becomes so emotionally moved by them that she opts to help them escape back to Earth. 359* ''WesternAnimation/TeenTitans'': In the episode "Aftershock (Part 1)", Terra (who was previously revealed to be working for [[BigBad Slade]] [[EvilAllAlong all along]]) and Raven both claimed to have always hated each other. The sincerity of these claims, Raven's especially, is questionable.

'''Raven:''' I never even wanted to know you!
* ''WesternAnimation/TheTransformers'': In ''Megatron's Master Plan, Part 1'', a public relations campaign by Megatron results in most of humanity turning against the Autobots. Sunstreaker [[FantasticRacism expresses how he truly feels about them]].
