A particularly CruelAndUnusualDeath where a character ends up trapped in a mesh of large machinery, which crushes and grinds them into a pulp. Oftentimes, given the purpose of the devices, it features someone being wedged between two of them at once. If this happens in a cartoon, chances are the character involved will simply be SquashedFlat.

This commonly is caused by an [[KillerOutfit article of clothing]], especially [[CapeSnag a cape/cloak]], being snagged on the gears and pulling the character inside.

Often goes hand in hand with a ConveyorBeltOfDoom. Places where this can happen are often guilty of NoOSHACompliance. Surprisingly has nothing to do with ''VideoGame/GearsOfWar''. Often involves a GoryDiscretionShot. Not to be confused with [[WesternAnimation/FamilyGuy what grinds your gears]]. Compare with WoodChipperOfDoom, DeadlyRotaryFan and FoldSpindleMutilation.

This is often a {{Death Trope|s}}, so '''all spoilers are unmarked.'''

[[folder: Advertising]]
* In the ERI Safety PSA ''[[https://youtu.be/0GXcbReCYwM?t=1m51s Think About This,]]'' this happens to a worker when a colleague unwittingly turns on a large grinder/mixer while he's servicing it.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Anime & Manga]]
* One of Count Cagliostro's mooks is crushed by the workings during the famous ClockTower climax of ''[[Anime/TheCastleOfCagliostro Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro]]'', though a GoryDiscretionShot hides the gruesome details from the audience. An unusual variant happens to the Count himself when he's caught in between the gigantic hour and minute hands of the clock face itself as the special mechanism causes them to both rapidly converge on 12.
* In the True Devil Chojin arc of ''Manga/{{Kinnikuman}}'', Benkiman loses the match against Gear Master by getting crushed in Gear Master's Genocide Gears.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Comic Books]]
* ''ComicBook/IdeesNoires'' has a new kind of SiegeEngine: a giant gear that pulps the heads of the soldiers looking over the battlements.
* ''ComicBook/{{Lanfeust}}'': When Hebus the troll runs into a castle gate, he starts beating on it, to no effect. A guard leaning back against the windlass smugly tells his friend that it's Armalian steel and the troll won't get through it. Hebus, having reached the same conclusion, grabs the gate and pushes it up, the guard getting crushed by the gears he was leaning on.
* In ''ComicBook/LoriLovecraft: Repression'', Thalia Dubois attempts to kill Lori inside Big Ben during a film shoot. In the struggle, she falls into Big Ben's gears and is crushed to death.
* ''ComicBook/TransformersMoreThanMeetsTheEye'': Tesarus of the Decepticon Justice Division is a massive Cybertronian who has a pair of powerful waldos on his shoulders that he likes to grab smaller foes with and shove them into the massive grinding gears that he has in his chest. Sometimes he uses these grinding blades to execute prisoners (typically feet-first so it takes longer and is more painful), but frequently he'll use it as a torture method and pull his victim out before the damage becomes fatal.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Fan Works]]
* ''Fanfic/TheMountainAndTheWolf'': The siege of King's Landing goes particularly fast because the River Gate was left open, allowing Davos' fleet to make landfall without resistance. Tyrion investigates the River Gate and finds that the soldiers have not only been killed but stuffed into the gears to keep the gate open.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Film -- Animation]]
* This is also the fate of the Seamstress in ''WesternAnimation/{{Nine}}'', trapped by the heroes and dragged between two massive gears in the factory; we even get to see her head go 'pop' between the teeth, though as she's a MechanicalMonster, this isn't as gory as it sounds.
* ''WesternAnimation/TheBraveLittleToaster'': Toaster commits a HeroicSacrifice by jumping into the gears of a trash compactor to stop it from killing the Master. Fortunately, the Master is able to repair him good as new.
* ''WesternAnimation/Cars2'': Around the climax of the movie, Finn and Holly are tied to the giant clock gears of the Big Bentley by the bad guys, with them edging closer to being crushed by another gear each minute. Holly manages to save themselves by making the clock run in reverse.
* In Disney's ''WesternAnimation/TheGreatMouseDetective'', Basil flips the villain's cape into some bevel gears while the two were fighting inside Big Ben. Basil then rushes to rescue the HeartwarmingOrphan, who is poised to be crushed by much larger gears meshing, leaving the villain to tear off his cape to free himself.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Film -- Live-Action]]
* ''Film/ThirtyDaysOfNight'': A vampire is thrown into a large grinding machine not long after the survivors reach the plant.
* In TheClimax of ''Film/TwoThousandTwelve'', Gordon ends up caught in the gears of the Ark's door mechanism and is brutally (though [[BloodlessCarnage not explicitly]]) crushed to death. A minor Chinese character also ends up getting a leg caught in the machinery.
* In ''Film/AlitaBattleAngel'', the grinder Alita manages to have Stinger caught in is akin to big gears crushing what's thrown in it.
* The old ''wuxia'' swordplay flick ''Film/{{Ambush}}'' has a final battle with the protagonist fighting the main villain in an old, abandoned mill. The villain ends up having his right leg messily ripped off by the mill's gears.
* In ''Film/ColdPursuit'', [[spoiler:Avalance]] gets sucked into Nils' snowplow and is turned into a bloody red pulp that is sprayed along the side of the road.
* ''Film/DickTracy'': Big Boy is pushed over a ledge and [[DisneyVillainDeath falls to his doom]] in a gear factory. The temporary stopping of the gears makes it clear that he was more likely crushed to death.
* ''Film/TheFinalDestination'': After barely escaping an explosion in the mall, Lori is pulled into the exposed machinery of a broken escalator and is torn to shreds as Nick looks on. Of course, this turned out to be another premonition and he is able to prevent it. In an alternate scene, he ends up getting pulled in as well.
* In ''Film/TheFunhouse'', Gunther dies when he is caught in the gears of the funhouse after being electrocuted.
* In ''Film/GhostShip'', [[spoiler:Munder]] is crushed to death under the ship's gears while scuba diving in the flooded engine room.
* ''Film/HellboyIITheGoldenArmy'':
** Mr. Wink is crushed to death when he accidentally fires his mechanical fist into some sort of spinning trash-compacter in the Troll Market, pulling him into it. In Hellboy's defence, he did give him several chances to surrender beforehand.
** Several of the Golden Army automatons are crushed to pieces in the giant gears of their resting place, but they can endlessly regenerate by PullingThemselvesTogether so this is only a minor convenience for them.
* In ''Film/HolmesAndWatson'', Watson is strapped to a giant gear in the ''Titantic'''s engine room, so his head will be crushed by a cog when the engines start turning.
* ''Film/IndianaJonesAndTheTempleOfDoom.'' At the end of Indiana's fight with a GiantMook, the villain is dragged into a giant rock crusher [[KillerOutfit by his scarf]] and squashed to death.
* ''Film/JamesBond'':
** ''Film/LicenceToKill'': TheDragon Dario attempts to drop Bond into an industrial pulverizer that is being used to crush cocaine. After a tough fight, Bond manages to yank Dario so he falls into the pulverizer and is turned into a fine pink mist.
** ''Film/TomorrowNeverDies'': During the fight in Carver's headquarters in Hamburg, Bond tosses one of Carver's goons into a running printing press; resulting in the papers coming out [[BondOneLiner black and white and red all over]].
* ''Film/KingsmanTheGoldenCircle'':
** Poppy tells one of her mooks to throw his companion into an oversized meat grinder. She then cooks the meat and makes the mook eat it as a test of loyalty.
** Near the end of the movie, the climax of the fight between the Kingsmen and [[RogueAgent Whiskey]] results in the latter being dunked head-first into the running meat grinder. Even with nanotech that can [[ItMakesSenseInContext revive people after being shot in the head]], it's highly unlikely that Whiskey would be able to walk off his untimely death.
* Subverted in ''Film/ModernTimes''. Charlie gets caught inside the machinery, but the gears only move him around without harming him.
* ''Film/PhantomOfTheMallEricsRevenge'': After Volker attacks Melody again, knocking her unconscious, Eric fights him, then kills him using the automatic box crusher.
* In the opening scene of ''Film/ShanghaiGrand'', a mook gets tackled into a set of gears and is subsequently [[HalfTheManHeUsedToBe chewed into half from the waist]].
* Happens to a mook in ''Film/{{Snowpiercer}}'', when he gets pushed over a railing during a fight scene and is then eaten by the train engine's gears, thanks to NoOSHACompliance.
* In ''Film/Terminator2JudgmentDay'', during a battle in the steel mill, the [=T-800=] gets its arm caught between a large gear and the track it's on, crushing and pinning it. Not having the strength or leverage to reverse the gear's direction, he is forced to [[AnArmAndALeg tear the damaged arm off]] his body to get free.
* In ''Film/WhenEvilCalls'', a girl wishes she could lose a stone in weight. Her wish is granted by [[BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor having her arm ground off when it gets trapped in the garbage disposal]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Literature]]
* ''Literature/AlexRider'' is threatened with this at one point by TheDragon of ''Skeleton Key'', Conrad, if he doesn't confess. [[ILied Then when he does, Conrad decides to kill him anyway.]] Alex is only saved by the intervention of the BigBad, Alexei Sarov.
* ''Literature/DiogenesClub'': In "Literature/TheGypsiesInTheWood", Uncle Satt's chief clerk Steadman dies when he pushed into the main dynamo powering the Gift and is ground up by the workings.
* ''Literature/TheExecutioner''. In #57 "Flesh Wounds", terrorist leader Dante gets his sleeve caught in the gears underneath the rotating stage of a music concert. Bolan points out that in a few seconds it'll be his hand, but Dante chooses to be DefiantToTheEnd rather than talk, so Bolan gives him a MercyKill.
* In ''Literature/GoingPostal'', Mr. Gryle is quite thoroughly done in by an experimental mail-sorting engine, thanks to a central flywheel [[AchievementsInIgnorance so poorly designed that it rotates through its own space-time frame where pi is exactly equal to three]]. AlienGeometries plus an off-balanced banshee equals a "gloop" and [[LudicrousGibs a sticky smear]].
* ''Literature/TheJonah'': Drugs runner [[spoiler: Andy Trewick]], for stealing his employer's merchandise, is fed into a mill’s funnel-shaped pulverizer.
* ''Literature/JPBeaumont'': In ''Literature/TakingTheFifth'', one of the victims is drugged, bound, and placed under a rotating stage, where he gets caught in the mechanism and crushed to death.
* This is the implied fate of Herbert, the son of the family who inherit ''Literature/TheMonkeysPaw.'' After wishing for 200 pounds to pay some bills, a messenger brings news that Herbert had been caught in the machinery of the factory where he works -- his body was so badly mangled that he could only be identified by his clothes. His gruesome death has the company award the family the 200 pounds out of sympathy.
* ''Literature/ShipBreaker''. [[PsychoForHire Richard Lopez]] is pulled halfway into the gears of the ship's hydraulics system [[AnArmAndALeg losing both legs and an arm]] -- he's so high on drugs he can barely understand the horror of what's happened to him.
* ''Literature/YoungSherlockHolmes'': The final fate of Grivens in ''Red Leech''. Tipped over a walkway in the engine room of the ship, his coat snags on the cams of the massive steam engine and he is crushed to death.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Live-Action TV]]

* ''Series/SquidGame'': Ali's boss' hand gets crushed up by a pair of rolling flatteners after he accidentally get shoved into it.
[[/folder]]

* In ''TabletopGame/{{Pathfinder}}'', the signature move of the Clockwork Golem is to pop open and drag someone into its transmission.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Video Games]]
* ''VideoGame/BlazBlue''
** Carl Clover's updated Astral Heat in Chronophantasma has him trapping his foe in a pocket dimension where they are ground to dust by giant gears.
** One of Relius Clover's Distortion Drives, Req Vinum, has him trapping the foe in an energy field and chipped away by large gears and cogs.
* ''VideoGame/BloodyZombies'' have outdoor areas containing gears, which can harm you upon touch. But you can also take advantage of the environment by throwing zombie mooks into them, with bloody results.
* ''VideoGame/CastlevaniaHarmonyOfDissonance'': There's an enemy called Guardian Armor. It resembles the many Living Armor monsters encountered in the game, with the difference being that it carries a huge shield that makes it impervious to damage. To destroy it, one must push it into the rotating gears affixed into the back of the room. If the Guardian Armor is pushed all the way onto them, they will trap and pull him in, destroying him completely and sending the pieces of its armor flying all across the room, that [[TheHero Juste]] can equip.
* ''VideoGame/{{Clock Tower|1995}}'': This is how [[ImplacableMan the Scissorman]] is eventually defeated in the good endings. After the title location gets activated, the bells ringing seem to mess with him mentally, causing him to wander off the edge of the platform, seemingly falling into the gears below. On a more unfortunate note, if the player gets the A ending, then they’re presented with a HopeSpot of one of the protagonist’s friends arriving shortly after, upon which [[BigBad Mary]] suddenly appears and throws said friend into the gears as well.
* ''VideoGame/CrashTagTeamRacing:'' In one of the "Die-o-rama" cutscenes, Crash is killed by being crushed by giant gears.
* There are two obstacles in ''VideoGame/DukeNukem3D'' that are composed of two enormous gears meshing, with one gear missing a tooth. Duke can travel between these gears if he occupies the missing tooth's space. Or he can mistime it, and get squished, giving himself a BondOneLiner.
* Gears are all over the place in ''VideoGame/ExitLimboOpening'', that can chew your health away if you touch them. You can also throw enemies into gears with bloody effects, and in fact this is the only method to defeat the first boss, Junkie Ram, a BullfightBoss who constantly charges at you. (Said boss area have a set of gears in the back wall. You do the math.)
* In ''VideoGame/GodOfWar3,'' Kratos uses Poseidon's princess to keep a gate mechanism open, but her strength eventually gives out and she's crushed by the gears, her mangled body keeping the gate from closing completely.
* This can happen to Norman Jayden in ''VideoGame/HeavyRain'' during the junkyard fight if the player doesn't guide him out of the car thrown into the grinder fast enough.
* The ultimate of Urgot, the Dreadnought, from ''VideoGame/LeagueOfLegends'' fires a long-ranged harpoon out that locks onto the first enemy champion it hits. If their HP is low enough (making them too weak to resist him), he reels the harpoon back in, dragging the hapless champion into a set of grinding rollers set into the front of his cybernetic body and gruesomely ripping them apart and not even leaving a body behind. Not only is it effectively a guaranteed kill (it does 9999 damage), it's such a horrible death that any of the hapless victim's teammates nearby are briefly terrified by witnessing it.
* ''VideoGame/{{Limbo}}'': The sprawling late-game factory includes several {{Clockworks Area}}s where the PlayerCharacter has to navigate giant, moving gears, threatening this trope as one of TheManyDeathsOfYou.
* ''VideoGame/MortalKombatArmageddon'' has a set of gears as a death trap in the Khan's Arena stage, that seems to serve no purpose other than being a death trap. Knock a fighter in them and they'll jam the gears until the motor manages to "work" them through the cogs.
* ''VideoGame/PaperMarioTheOrigamiKing'': During his search of Shogun Studios, Luigi ends up getting caught in the gears behind the scenes of the ninja house attraction. Fortunately, this is the continuity where everyone is made of paper, so he's able to be freed and good as new after getting unfolded.
* ''Franchise/{{Pokemon}}'': The move Gear Grind, learned by the Klink evolution line, uses gears to crush targets.
* ''VideoGame/PoppyPlaytime'' has this trope as the way you kill Mommy Long Legs. Upon turning on a grinder, she gets her arm caught in it, then her leg, before finally getting pulled in and crushed.
* ''VideoGame/RatchetAndClankUpYourArsenal'': Qwark previously defeated Dr. Nefarious when he attempted to give him a {{wedgie}}, which caused Nefarious to trip and fall into the gears of his own machinery. Though, Nefarious survived, as the process instead turned him into a robot.
* If Emily fails a specific quicktime event while running from a threat in ''VideoGame/UntilDawn'', she can fall into an ore grinder and get everything below her waist ground into mincemeat.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Web Animation]]
* ''WebAnimation/DSBTInsaniT'': This is how Blake defeats Darkness Robo in [='VRcade'=].
* In the [[AnimatedMusicVideo BGA (background art)]] for [=LeaF=]'s 2018 song MARENOL, this is one of many ways in which the protagonist does in her dreams.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Western Animation]]
* ''WesternAnimation/TheBatman'' has a MeleeATrois between Batman, Catwoman, and Ragdoll take place inside the Gotham clock tower over two legendary jewels supposedly hidden inside it
** Batman is about to be dragged into one of these deaths by way of a CapeSnag from Ragdoll, prompting a SadisticChoice between losing his hooded cape (and thus making a DramaticUnmask) or this trope. He is [[AvertedTrope narrowly saved]] by Catwoman on the grounds that [[DatingCatwoman she doesn't want his mysterious allure ruined]].
** Just after Batman is saved by Catwoman, the enormous bells of the clock tower strike and the vibrations send Ragdoll tumbling into the gearwork, prompting a [[ScreamDiscretionShot bloodcurdling scream from Ragdoll as the gears swallow and grind him]] with both Batman and Catwoman looking on in horror as the scream dies... [[SubvertedTrope and gives way]] to a relieved sigh with [[{{Contortionist}} Ragdoll]] emerging on the other side no worse for wear, prompting StunnedSilence from both Batman and Catwoman. The real kicker? While he was undergoing what, to him, was essentially thorough impromptu ''massage therapy'' he somehow ''managed to spot and grab the two jewels while '''inside''' the gearworks.''
--->'''Ragdoll:''' Really irons out the kinks... oh! And lookie what I found! ''[holds up the jewels with a shit-eating grin on his face]''
** Batman later abuses Ragdoll's immunity to this trope to get around his ThouShaltNotKill rule - by kicking him into the gears (much to Ragdoll's enjoyment) only to jam the gears with a Batarang, causing Ragdoll to get helplessly stuck and taking him out of the MeleeATrois.
* This almost happens to WesternAnimation/DonaldDuck in ''[[WesternAnimation/ClassicDisneyShorts How to Have an Accident at Work]]'' when he accidentally starts the machine he is eating lunch on and [[KillerOutfit the napkin tied around his neck is snagged in the gears]]. In freeing himself, [[ItMakesSenseInContext he completely derails western civilization]].
* The villain from Creator/HannaBarbera's cartoon series ''WesternAnimation/JosieAndThePussycats'' episode "Never Mind A Mastermind" seeks to eliminate the meddlesome Alexander, Melody, and Alexandra by letting a cogged rack act as a ConveyorBeltODoom, taking the three toward the point where it meshes with a large drive gear. The TeamPet saves them from being meshed to mush, however.
* The "Campus Commandos" episode of ''WesternAnimation/MegaManRubySpears'' involves Dr. Wily attempting to kill Mega Man, Roll and Rush by tying them to the gears of the campus clock tower.
* The ''Creator/{{Pixar}}'' short cartoon ''Mikes New Car'' from 2002 has Mike Wazowsky from ''WesternAnimation/MonstersInc'' show off his new car to his best friend James Sullivan. At one point, Mike ends up in the car's engine bay with the hood shutting above him. The engine compartment seems composed solely of large gears meshing precisely to create this hazard. Mike survives due to PlotArmor and the RuleOfFunny.
* The second [[Film/WhoFramedRogerRabbit Roger Rabbit]] short cartoon is ''Roller Coaster Rabbit'', which sees a desperate Roger attempt to save Baby Herman from harm at a carnival. When Baby Herman clambers aboard a Ferris wheel, Roger tries to snag him from the car, but his feet become enmeshed in the wheel's many exposed drive gears. ToonPhysics make this mightily painful for Roger, but neither injurious nor fatal; even his outfit emerges intact.
* Narrowly averted in the ''WesternAnimation/SillySymphonies'' short "WesternAnimation/TheOldMill''. A bird has made her nest on one of the spoke holes of a grindstone of the abandoned mill. That night a storm starts moving the gears and the rope holding the main gear breaks. The bird and her eggs are only saved by the fact that [[ByWallThatIsHoley the corresponding spoke is missing.]]
* ''WesternAnimation/WallaceAndGromit'': In ''WesternAnimation/ACloseShave'', main villain Preston is defeated by getting run through his own dog food machine's grinder. As he's a RobotDog, however, Wallace and Gromit rebuild him to be nicer.
