Context Main / DorkHorseCandidate

Go To

It's a staple of teen dramas: the AlphaBitch is running unopposed for the presidency of the AbsurdlyPowerfulStudentCouncil. She gloats to the unpopular kids about her continued reign, until one of them says, "That's it! You've ruled this school for too long! I'm running against you!" The Dork Horse Candidate is born.

The Dork Horse Candidate is not just an underdog, but someone completely unsuited for politics. He lacks intelligence, charisma, popularity and administrative skill. There's usually a debate between the candidates, in which the dork horse is made to look like an even worse option.

The candidate can be most any character, but typically is not one of the Alpha Bitch's usual adversaries, such as the LoserProtagonist or TheSnarkKnight. However, these are usually the people who tell the Dork Horse Candidate that he has no chance of winning.

The candidate may assemble a RagtagBunchOfMisfits advisory team. Each kid will have a task for which he or she is poorly suited. If someone is doing opinion polls, it will be ShrinkingViolet or TheUnintelligible.

The Dork Horse Candidate [[UnderdogsNeverLose almost always wins]], usually [[DecidedByOneVote by one vote]]. Either he gives a RousingSpeech, the expected winner squanders his initial advantage, or some DeusExMachina comes along to derail the supposedly inevitable outcome. Contrast with NominatedAsAPrank, where this candidate's support is purely malicious. See also DarkHorseVictory.

[[folder:Anime & Manga]]
* ''Manga/UruseiYatsura'' - In Mendo's introductory episode/chapter, he runs for class president on the platform of draconian punishments for misbehavior. Except not for the girls. Ataru is pressed into running against him by the boys, leading to a tied vote. To resolve that, they duel and Ataru wins, making Mendo the vice president.
* ''Anime/OjamajoDoremi'', with the random classmate of the week running against Tamaki Reika.
* ''Manga/AzumangaDaioh''. In the manga, the class only has one person willing to run for president, GenkiGirl Tomo. No-one in class is really eager to vote for her, either. The teacher throws the class's most popular student up against her ''anyway''. Chiyo wins 30-2, which does beg the question of [[JerkAss who else would vote for Tomo]]. Chiyo, who didn't want the job anyway. At least it beats how the class president was chosen the previous semester - Yukari announced they needed one, waited five seconds for nominations and then declared a random guy in the front row the winner.
* ''Literature/{{Toradora}}'' - This trope gets a twist: Taiga runs for the position of student council president against Yuusaku in an attempt to motivate him to run for president himself. She almost would have won too, being the only candidate, despite threatening the student body with lots of misery when she'd hold the office.
* This was parodied in ''Manga/ToLoveRu'', which had Lala going up against Yui. The winner? Haruna, even though she isn't running. Because Yui's a hardass, and Lala obviously has [[TheDitz no clue what she's doing]].
* Subverted in ''Anime/{{Kamichu}}'' The under-confident goddess Yurie is pressed into running against a brilliant but obnoxious student for middle school student president. She wins in the usual fashion of the trope... then celebrates with a wave of crazy alterations to the school, uses up all her energy in the process, and passes out for a week. With Yurie unable to serve, the presidency passes to the obnoxious guy, who's furious he has to deal with the fiasco Yurie left him.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Comic Books]]
* The issue of ''ComicBook/{{PS238}}'' that introduced American Eagle and US Patriot Act had both of them running for class president as part of their ongoing efforts to prove that each was the more suited to be the definitive CaptainPatriotic hero of their generation. Since their reckless over-competitive behavior and More-Patriotic-Than-Thou attitude had offended everyone else in the class by this point, the election was a landslide victory for... Tyler, who wasn't even running.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Film]]
%%* ''Film/NapoleonDynamite'' - A definitive Dork Horse Candidate is Pedro.
* ''Film/HeadOfState'' had an attempt to throw a presidential election by a political party [[SpringtimeForHitler go horribly right]].
* In ''Film/WelcomeToMooseport'', feckless mechanic Harold "Handy" Harrison campaigns against retired U.S. president Monroe "Eagle" Cole to be mayor of the titular small town.
-->'''Cole''': Are you telling me that I'm running for mayor against ''the man installing my toilets?!''
* While he was appointed rather than elected, Jimmy Stewart's breathtakingly naive character in the 1939 classic ''Film/MrSmithGoesToWashington'' was the original Dork Horse Candidate.
* ''Film/RevengeOfTheNerds'' is based around this, with the titular nerds wanting to take over the school council and get vengeance on their jock nemeses.
* ''Film/{{Election}}'' -- The class-presidential campaign of Tammy Metzler. Her sole campaign promise was to dismantle student government once elected, "so none of us has to sit through one of these stupid assemblies ever again!". [[spoiler:If it wasn't for [[VoteEarlyVoteOften Adult Meddling]], she would have won in a landslide.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Literature]]
* In the Creator/GordonKorman book ''Don't Care High'', two friends at the most boring, lackluster high school in the city, completely as a gag, select a random nobody student to promote as class president... and due to snowballing events he becomes an icon of cool to the entire student body, much to his bewilderment. The hitch of the story is, from beginning to end, the kid they pick is such a nondescript cipher that they never figure out anything at all about him. Not his real address, not his phone number, not his pastimes, they never see his home or his family, all his previous addresses and schools don't or no longer exist... they even go so far as to break into his confidential records ''and find literally nothing in it''. And at the end of the story the kid simply disappears -- "moved to another town" -- and his forwarding address is nonexistent as well. A cipher from beginning to end.
* In ''Young Adult Novel'' by Creator/DanielPinkwater, when the Wild Dada Ducks discover that Kevin Shapiro is the name of an actual student at their high school, not just a character in their stories, they decide to run a publicity campaign for him, unaware that the student council election is happening at the same time. Kevin wins the election by a landslide despite not even being on the ballot. The school demands a new vote, whereupon Kevin gives a speech telling the students to vote for someone else since he doesn't want to be on the stupid council anyway -- which is greeted with thunderous applause. Of course they elect him anyway.
* In ''Literature/ASongOfIceAndFire'' when the Night's Watch is voting on a new Lord Commander, the cook Three Finger Hobb is put forward for consideration, and consistently gets a very small number of votes. It's speculated that he's being voted for by brothers who want him out of the kitchen. He doesn't win.
** Another candidate in the same election is [[TheEeyore Dolorous]] [[DeadpanSnarker Edd]] [[GallowsHumor Tollett.]] From his own comments it's quite probable he's only running to add some much-needed snark at the proceedings. This does earn him more than a few votes, though, even though he ultimately drops out to throw his support behind [[DarkHorseVictory Jon Snow.]]
--->'''Edd:''' "I just want to say to whoever is voting for me that I would certainly make an awful Lord Commander. But so would all these others."

[[folder:Live Action TV]]
* ''{{Series/Dinosaurs}}'' had the BumblingDad run against his CorruptCorporateExecutive boss; it ended in him giving a speech about how neither of them were suited, and everyone decided to vote for the news reporter (a not-veiled-at-all pastiche of Edward R. Murrow) who had been commentating on the whole thing.
* An episode of ''Series/SavedByTheBell'' has Screech (Dustin Diamond) win the Miss Bayside pageant.
* ''Series/{{Heroes}}'': Claire Bennet was a pretty, popular cheerleader, until she drove her car into a wall, resulting in severe injuries to a star football player. All the popular kids turned on her, but she wins Homecoming Queen by getting the vote of everyone who hates the popular kids, which is most of the student body.
* Subverted/Parodied in ''Series/ArrestedDevelopment'', where George Michael runs against Steve Holt. Steve Holt drops out of the race, and George Michael still only gets 3% of the vote. The Indian kid wins.
* ''Series/BuffyTheVampireSlayer'': Buffy ran against Cordelia for prom queen, just to prove that she could. The election eventually ended in a tie [[spoiler: between the ''other two'' candidates.]]
* ''{{Series/Popular}}'' - April actually won after the more popular candidates dropped out.
* In an episode of ''Series/CaliforniaDreams'', Jake, the resident semi-loner bad-boy ends up in the running for student body president and after almost dropping out wins the thing by singing a song called 'Leather and loose'.
* ''Series/NedsDeclassifiedSchoolSurvivalGuide'' - Played with in the fact that Ned has to be forced to run and his attempts to ''not'' get elected backfire hilariously. His reasoning for not running is because he views the entire thing as a popularity contest and thus, not worth it. However, he's surprised to discover that at least one unpopular kid won the election... the ''woodshop teacher.'' His main act as student president was using the car wash funds to get a new woodshop piece of equipment and was apparently well-received, still functioning to this day. After some motivation, he proceeds to go and get a good percentage of the votes. And yet, somehow, the weasel which is nominated every year as a joke [[CaligulasHorse ends up winning]]. [[LoopholeAbuse Probably due to the odd writing of the rules, as the weasel ended up with most of the votes (as in the literal pile of votes).]]
* ''Series/LizzieMcGuire'': Larry Tudgeman ends up winning easily against BetaBitch Claire and Lizzie due to his unbeatable campaign strategy of [[EatThat promising to eat a worm for every vote he gets]].
* ''Series/{{Zoey 101}}'': [[ButtMonkey Mark Del Figgalo]] wins the 9th grade presidentship, after both Chase and Zoey drop out.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Newspaper Comics]]
* A ''ComicStrip/{{Peanuts}}'' story arc from October 1964 has Linus running for class president, with Charlie Brown as his vice-president. At first Linus is reluctant to run, then he discovers a talent for public speaking, then he [[spoiler: blows it by giving a speech about the Great Pumpkin]]. [[http://www.gocomics.com/peanuts/1964/10/05 Read it here.]] The storyline was adapted into a TV special, ''You're Not Elected, Charlie Brown''.
* One arc in ''ComicStrip/BigNate'' sees Nate run for student council president and get elected because the students are tired of the popular kids always winning the position.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Video Games]]
* An early mission in ''VideoGame/{{Bully}}'' involves Earnest, de-facto leader of the Nerd clique, running for class president, and hiring Jimmy (the protagonist) to protect him from being harassed while he gives a speech, in which he pledges to do away with physical education and arts, in favour of a more purely academic curriculum.
-->'''Earnest:''' While my opponent may also be more popular, good-looking and muscular, and have the attention of the school bimbos, he just doesn't have what it takes to be president! There are some who claim I don't represent the masses. Let me tell you, I've been beat up just as much as you!
* ''VideoGame/BatmanArkhamKnight'' includes a bit of EnemyChatter about how ''The Joker'' [[NoodleIncident once ran for President]]. No one ever figured out how he got on the ballot. Mercifully, he didn't win.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Web Comics]]
* ''Webcomic/PennyAndAggie'', which even had ''two'' of these in Aggie and Duane being pounded on by charismatic jock-type Stan. Eventually Duane only wins because Stan decides he's already popular enough and endorses him.
* In ''Webcomic/SluggyFreelance'', in the "Meanwhile in the Dimension of Pain" guest stories, the demons of said dimension hold an election to choose a new Demon Lord after Lord Horribus is banished. His scheming little brother Terribus runs for office, and his only opponent is the resident idiot Reakk. The demons are unenthusiastic about voting for either. In the end, [[spoiler: Terribus wins through a BatmanGambit.]] The election is held by tearing wings off butterflies, but the butterflies all manage to fly into a beam of light that [[GoodHurtsEvil burns the demons]]. [[spoiler: Terribus arranges for Reakk to end up briefly in the beam and retrieve a butterfly, allowing him to cast the only vote, because he knows Reakk is such an idiot he will accidentally tear off the wrong wing and vote for Terribus.]]

[[folder:Western Animation]]
* In an episode of ''WesternAnimation/TheFairlyOddParents'', Timmy Turner runs for class president against popular kids Tad and Chad. He lampshades his status of being this when giving his speech to the students in a surprising SugarWiki/MomentOfAwesome. One to where Tad and Chad had to bribe the rest of the student body with cake to try and win. This was their downfall as they all got sick and Timmy was the only person at school (besides the Principal, who is frosting-intolerant.) Cue President Timmy Turner.
* Tucker running up againast JerkJock Dash Baxter in ''WesternAnimation/DannyPhantom''. However, the fact not even his friends, Danny and Sam, took it seriously to help him, was a plot point as it gave him a bit of a resentment so an artifact would respond to him, giving a good amount of power.
* In the ''WesternAnimation/FamilyGuy'' episode "Running Mates," Peter runs against Lois for school board president. He wins after publicizing a scandalous photo of her.
* In the classic ''WesternAnimation/LooneyTunes'' cartoon, ''WesternAnimation/BallotBoxBunny'', WesternAnimation/BugsBunny and Yosemite Sam engage in the usual hijinks over a mayoral election, only to have [[DarkHorseVictory a very literal "Dark Horse" win the election and become "Mare."]]
* Parodied in ''WesternAnimation/TheOblongs'', "Disfigured Debbie." The RagtagBunchOfMisfits run one of their own against the AlphaBitch. She crushes Milo in a landslide, then the whole school throws a grand celebration of her victory - during which [[spoiler: Debbie falls into a wheat thresher]].
* ''WesternAnimation/FostersHomeForImaginaryFriends'' - Bloo runs against Mr. Herriman and Frankie for house president. He was obviously not suited for the position as President of the house and basically ended up helping Mr. Herriman mudsling against Frankie. Despite this, she still won.
* ''WesternAnimation/ThePowerpuffGirls1998'' - Fuzzy Lumpkins yelling "shut up" at the campaigning Mayor -- and then going on to win despite lazing off back at his house as he usually does. He then proceeds to run the town down to the ground because he's self-centered and doesn't care to rule.
* In ''WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons'', Bart Simpson runs for class president against Martin Prince. Everyone in the class prefers Bart, but he loses because he throws a preemptive victory party, meaning the only people who bother to vote are Martin and his equally geeky friend. Later, Homer cheers up Bart by convincing him that he's better off not being class president, because it's just extra work for no benefit.
** Examined in an another episode where Homer reveals he ran for student body president and lost. However, it's revealed that he lost because the principal got involved when he found some of the students were planning on voting on Homer to win as a joke. The latter half has a fascinating WhatIf were he didn't get involved and Homer wins. While Homer is initially laughed at, Lenny and Carl both lampshade that Homer still winning despite being... well Homer, actually cheer him on and get the whole crowd to do so. Homer actually benefits from being student body president, he still ends up with Marge and ends up a lot more successful in life (though without kids.)
* Used in ''WesternAnimation/{{Recess}}'', where Gretchen ([[TheSmartGuy the smart one]]) competes against Vince (the popular one) for Fourth Grade President. Gretchen wins by one vote - ''Vince's.'' While Vince is a LovableJock, he voted for Gretchen because he figured she was the better candidate. Furthermore, the trope is downplayed since the two are good friends and Vince is a NiceGuy.
