Quite simply, when a character gives another character a cute or endearing nickname because the two are either as close as TrueCompanions, or the namer is interested romantically in the namee. The nickname may not be well-received by the one being named, as they find it insulting or {{embarrassing|Nickname}}, but in the mind of the name-giver it's sweet and/or thoughtful. The formal term for an affectionate nickname is a "hypocorism".

In short, it's a pet name. Expect TheNicknamer to dole these out ''a lot''.

SubTrope of InSeriesNickname. Compare InsultOfEndearment. Contrast TermsOfEndangerment, where an enemy uses a superficially affectionate nickname in an {{i|ShallTauntYou}}rritating or disturbing manner.

[[folder:Anime & Manga]]
* ''Literature/AccelWorld'':

** Fuko "Sky Raker" Kurasaki and Akira "Aqua Current" Himeni call Kuroyukihime "Sa-chan," ("Sacchi" in the English version of the light novel)
** Utai "Ardor Maiden" Shinomiya is sometimes called "Uiui".
* In ''Manga/AzumangaDaioh'', Yukari calls her friend and fellow teacher Minamo Kurosawa "Nyamo". Some of the students adopt it as well, to Nyamo's initial dismay.
* ''Manga/{{Bakuman}}'': Mashiro is the only character to call Takagi "Shuujin", and Takagi calls Mashiro "Saiko" in return, which is a nickname he picked up from Mashiro's friends, but as the series progresses, Takagi is the only character remaining to call him Saiko. Both nicknames are based on alternate readings of their given names (Akito and Moritaka, respectively).
* In ''Manga/{{Bleach}}'', Yachiru is TheNicknamer and insists on giving everyone nicknames, ranging from embarrassing to cute. She even calls [[BloodKnight Kenpachi Zaraki]] "Ken-chan" ("Kenny" in the dub).
** Tatsuki and Chizuru both occasionally refer to Orihime as "Hime".
** Sado "Chad" Yasutora gets almost exclusively referred to as "Chad" by Ichigo -- most of his other friends call him "Sado."
* Lelouch of ''Anime/CodeGeass'' has always been Lulu to Shirley.
* Ed starts calling Faye "Faye-Faye" in the latter half of ''Anime/CowboyBebop''.
* In ''Manga/DagashiKashi'', Tou likes to refer to Kokomatsu as “coconuts”. This also sometimes applies to Saya (depending on the subs).
* ''Manga/TheDangersInMyHeart'':
** Kyōtarō Ichikawa is called "Kyou/Kyou-chan" by his family. Yamada expresses a desire to call him such when the two exchange LINE. [[spoiler: She later asks if she can call him "Kyo", but flip-flops around it out of shyness. She settles for just [[FirstNameBasis his regular first name]] after [[ItMakesSenseInContext he nearly dies on the spot from whispering it to his ear.]]]] [[spoiler: As shown later when she writes "Kyo" down to mark their heights at school, she still hasn't completely given up on it.]]
** Yamada calls her friends Chihiro Kobayashi and Serina Yoshida "Chii" and "Nyaa" respectively. Kobayashi is also referred to as "Bayashiko" by Moeko.
* ''Literature/DateALive'': [[IdolSinger Miku Izayoi]] refers to [[TheHero Shido Itsuka]] as "Darling", being the only man she respects.
* In ''Manga/DemonSlayerKimetsuNoYaiba'', later in the series the protagonist, Tanjiro, takes part in a very grueling training to boost his physical strength and endurance, one part consisted of meditating under a waterfall for hours, the water was extremely cold so after the meditation period was over Tanjiro and his colleagues resorted to laying their bodies over large rocks, hugging them, to get some warmth, in a comic manner the hunters kept calling the boulders ''mother / mommy'' due its warmth washing the cold away; Tanjiro being [[TheHeart the ultimate nice guy]] got [[TeamMom nicknamed by his colleagues as “mommy” afterwards, due his warm and gentle nature]].
* In ''Anime/DigimonGhostGame'', Kiyoshiro's {{tsundere}} Digimon partner Jellymon refers to him exclusively as "Darling".
* ''Franchise/DragonBall'':
** From ''Manga/DragonBall'' to ''Anime/DragonBallZ'' and so on, Bulma refers to Son Goku as "Son-kun" in Japanese (or simply "Son" in the manga translation).
** When Goku meets and befriends Android #8, he has trouble pronouncing his name and simply calls him "Eighter" ("Hacchan", in Japanese).
** In ''Anime/DragonBallSuper'', Goku calls Zen'O (the king of the multiverse) "Zen-chan" ("Zenny" in the English dub). While Zen'o is completely fine with it, it [[MassOhCrap nearly gives everyone else heart attacks]] to hear him call [[TheDreaded Zen'o]] by an informal nickname.
* ''Manga/FruitsBasket'':
** Tohru calls her best friends Arisa Uotani and Saki Hanajima "Uo-chan" and "Hana-chan", respectively.
** [[TheNicknamer Kakeru Manabe]] of the StudentCouncil who, aside from having a number of nicknames himself, tends to give them to others... whether they want them or not. Case in point: resident Bishounen Yuki Sohma gets saddled with "Yun-Yun," which [[LampshadeHanging he points out]] is a ridiculous nickname since it's ''longer than his real name.'' This doesn't faze Kakeru one bit. Later on, he nicknames another member of the student council, "Chibisuke." This doesn't go over well either.
** Most of the family refers to Ritsu as "Ritchan". Tohru, polite as always, takes to calling him "Ritchan-san". Additionally, Tohru's friends have nicknames for each other, and [[spoiler:Hanajima gives one to ''Akito'', to show that they're starting to become friends. Akito has no idea what to make of this.]]
* In ''Anime/FullmetalAlchemist2003'', ColonelBadass Roy Mustang refers to his hand-selected subordinates by the names of chess pieces. It's partly a private code, partly an inside joke, and partly this trope.
** In the manga, the Briggs soldiers sometimes refer to their FourStarBadass leader, Olivier Armstrong, as "the Princess" and "our Queen."
* ''Anime/FutureCardBuddyfight'' has Qinus Axia, a dragon wizard who starts calling Gao and Drum (who he seems to be attracted to) "Gaowow" and "Drumkins" respectively after Drum saves his life.
* In ''Manga/GirlFriends2006'', Akko almost always calls the main character "Mari-chan," unless she's talking with Mari's parents (in which case she uses "Mariko-san") or the teacher (in which case she uses "[[LastNameBasis Kumakura]]-san.")
* In ''Anime/GreatPretender,'' Makoto Edamura is known as "Edamame" to Team Confidence. The name starts out as a bit of AccidentalMisnaming, but sticks--and while it starts out being somewhat belittling, it becomes increasingly affectionate as the series goes on.
* In the ''Manga/Gundam00Sidestories'', Gundam Meister 874 is given the nickname "Hanayo" by her teammates. It's made up of the [[GoroawaseNumber first syllable of each number in her name]]: '''Ha'''chi (8), '''Na'''na (7), and '''Yo'''n (4).
* ''Manga/{{Haikyuu}}'':
** Hinata's childhood friend Izumi calls him "Sho" and "Sho-chan" based on his given name Shoyo. Hinata calls him "Izumin".
** Yamaguchi calls his childhood friend Tsukishima "Tsukki" which later becomes used by other characters, much to Tsukishima's chagrin.
** Kenma calls his childhood friend Kuroo Tetsuro "Kuro".
** Nearly everyone calls Sugawara Koushi by the sweet nickname "Suga".
** Similarly, Nishinoya is just called "Noya" by those close to him.
** Tanaka Ryuunosuke is called "Ryuu" by his sister and best friend Nishinoya.
** Nekoma's Yamamoto Taketora is called "Tora" by his friends.
** Yachi is referred to as Yacchan on more than one occasion.
** Oikawa refers to Iwaizumi as "Iwa-chan" which the latter puts up with it because it's a childhood nickname, but he doesn't seem to like it very much.
* Nakamura from ''Manga/TheHighSchoolLifeOfAFudanshi'' tends to give out these. He calls Sakaguchi "Gucchi", Ueda "Uedacchi", and Shiratori "Toricchi".
* ''Manga/HellsParadiseJigokuraku'':
** Yuzuriha calls Sagiri "Sagirin".
** Fuchi calls Senta and Tenza "Sen" and "Ten"
* ''Anime/HetaliaAxisPowers'':
** Poland calls his best friend/partner Lithuania "Liet". Finland also uses one for Sweden, which was translated as "[[GratuitousJapanese Su-san]]" in early scanlations but changed to "Sve" in later scanlations.
** Hungary and Ukraine have these for each other as well. The scanlation roughly translated their nicknames as "Hun" and "Raine" respectively.
* In ''Manga/HoshinEngi'', Fugen calls Taikobo, his best friend of many decades, "Bo-chan," or simply "Bo" in the American release by Viz.
* ''Manga/HuskyAndMedley'': "Husky" refers to Medley's initial description of her {{yuri}} crush, which included the fact that she owns a Siberian husky. (Thus putting the "pet" in "pet name".)
* ''Manga/ImaizuminChiWaDouyaraGalNoTamaribaNiNatteruRashiiDeep'': Ruri normally calls Keita "Ima-chin" as a friend.
* ''Manga/JoJosBizarreAdventure'':
** ''[[Manga/JoJosBizarreAdventurePhantomBlood Phantom Blood]]'': Erina inverts this, as she switches from calling her beloved Jonathan by his nickname "[=JoJo=]" to his real name after marrying him. But later, [[spoiler:long after he died]], she uses his old nickname for her beloved grandson [[Manga/JoJosBizarreAdventureBattleTendency Joseph]].
** ''[[Manga/JoJosBizarreAdventureBattleTendency Battle Tendency]]'': Joseph eventually starts calling Caesar "Caesar-chan" ("Caesarino" in the dub and official manga translation), [[UsefulNotes/JapaneseHonorifics a term with potentially flirty implications]].
** ''[[Manga/JoJosBizarreAdventureStardustCrusaders Stardust Crusaders]]'': Jotaro refers to [[TagALongKid Anne]] a lot as "half-pint".
** ''[[Manga/JoJosBizarreAdventureDiamondIsUnbreakable Diamond is Unbreakable]]'': Rohan is none too happy about Reimi calling him "Little Rohan", thinking it's overly familiar. At the time, [[ForgottenFirstMeeting he didn't know that she was his babysitter back when he was four]].
** ''[[Manga/JoJosBizarreAdventureGoldenWind Golden Wind]]'': Tiziano's partner, Squalo, calls him "Tiz" during their battle with Narancia.
** ''[[Manga/JoJosBizarreAdventureStoneOcean Stone Ocean]]'': "[=JoJo=]" is this to Jolyne. Her mother used to call her [=JoJo=] and she wanted her boyfriend Romeo to call her [=JoJo=] as well. Anyone else, however, is not allowed to say it.
* In ''Manga/KOn'', when Azusa is welcomed with a gift of cat ears and is made to put them on and say "nya", Yui calls her "Azu-nyan". This becomes important later when Ui tries to sub in for a sick Yui and fools her peers for a little while. Azusa's test was to have her call her by her nickname. Ui gets it wrong, as Azusa never told her what it was when complaining about it.
* In ''Manga/LaughingUnderTheClouds'', Chutaro calls his oldest brother Tenka "Ten-nii"[[note]]short for Ten-nii-san aka "Older Brother Ten"[[/note]]. Both Funimation's sub and dub use "Tenny" instead. Likewise, he also calls Shirasu "Shiro-nii".
* ''Anime/LupinIIITravelsOfMarcoPoloAnotherPage'': Ami starts calling Goemon "Goe-Goe," much to the samurai’s irritation. Even Grandpa eventually starts addressing him as Goe-Goe.
* In ''Manga/MagiTheLabyrinthOfMagic'', Aladdin calls Morgiana "Mor". Kouha shortens his brother's Kouen and Koumei's names to "En" and "Mei". And some of Sinbad's generals call him "Sin". Ugo's real name was Uraltugo but all his friends call him Ugo.
* Himiko always calls Kurama "Tori-san" ("Mr. Bird") in the ''Anime/MashinHeroWataruSeries''.
* In ''Manga/MonthlyGirlsNozakiKun'', Nozaki started calling Mikoshiba "Mikorin" in his head thanks to how adorably awkward he is, but never uses it out loud. Sakura starts using "Mikorin" accidentally, annoying him until he eventually gives up correcting her.
* In ''Manga/MoriartyThePatriot'':
** Sherlock Holmes calls Professor William James Moriarty "Liam"
** Albert and Bond call William "Will" and "Will-kun", respectively. Jack also calls him "Young Will"
** Mycroft, Irene Adler, and [[SignificantNameShift eventually]] William, call Sherlock "Sherly"
** Sherlock calls his brother Mycroft "Mykie/Mikey"
* ''Manga/MyHeroAcademia'':
** The series has a special case, with Uraraka nicknaming Midoriya "Deku". That nickname was initially an ''insult'' that Midoriya's former friend Bakugo used to belittle him (it means 'useless'), but Uraraka came to use the name after a misunderstanding, thinking it sounded encouraging (it sounds like "dekiru", "you can do it", in a Kansai accent). This completely changed Midoriya's outlook on that name, to the point he decided to adopt it as his superhero alias; while Katsuki looked angry about that, Ochaco was very touched.
** Similarly, Midoriya still refers to Bakugo by his childhood nickname "Kacchan", which Bakugo allows with no objections, showing their complex history and relationship with each other.
** Momo Yaoyozoru gets affectionately referred to as "Yaomomo" by her classmates.
** Gran Torino tends to call Toshinori "boy" on occasion despite All Might being roughly in his forties or even fifties, and passes the nickname to Midoriya as well.
* ''Manga/{{Naruto}}'' refers to his ParentalSubstitute Jiraiya as "Ero-sennin" (Pervy-Sage). While definitely an EmbarrassingNickname, you can definitely tell it's much, ''much'' more about affection as their relationship develops. This becomes especially clear when Naruto still refers to him (when thinking of him affectionately) that way [[spoiler: after he is killed]]. He also refers to Tsunade as "Grandma Tsunade" and is the ''only'' person who gets away with doing so without being punched into orbit.
* In ''Manga/NegimaMagisterNegiMagi'', Albireo Imma likes to tease Evangeline by calling her "Kitty" (from one of her middle names: Katherine).
* Yoriko from ''Literature/NyarukoCrawlingWithLove'' refers to Mahiro as "Hiro-kun"; this is just one of several cute little affectations that makes it hard to believe she's [[MumLooksLikeASister his mother]] rather than an older sister.
* ''Manga/OnePiece'':
** Donquixote Doflamingo ''of all people'' gets one from his Executives, "Doffy". It turns out he's genuinely close to his Executives, considering them TrueCompanions and his true family.
** [[TheComicallySerious Trafalgar Law]] has been referred to as "Traffy" (or Torao in Japanese) by Luffy and the Straw Hats since the Punk Hazard Arc, as Luffy cannot pronounce Law's surname to save his life. The nickname has stuck throughout the series, and Luffy only calls him by his first name when [[OOCIsSeriousBusiness Law's been hurt or the situation is incredibly serious]].
** Zoro gets the nickname "Mr. Bushido" from Vivi. Interestingly, it wasn't initially affectionate, as she used it mockingly back when she was undercover as Miss Wednesday, but she kept using it after they became friends.
* In ''Anime/PokemonTheSeries'', it seems very rare for trainers to nickname their Pokémon, even trainers like Ash who are very close to them. One trainer who ''does'' is Richie, Ash's rival from [[Anime/PokemonTheOriginalSeries the Indigo Plateau]]. His known Pokémon -- with nicknames -- are:
-->'''Pikachu:''' "Sparky"
-->'''Charizard:''' "Zippo"
-->'''Butterfree:''' "Happy"
-->'''Taillow:''' "Rose"
-->'''Pupitar:''' "Cruz"
** In the [[Manga/TheElectricTaleOfPikachu manga adaptation]] Sparky and Zippo are changed to Chuchino and Charley, respectively. Ash also canonically nicknamed his Pokémon but never uses them.
** In the ''Sword and Shield'' chapter of ''Manga/PokemonAdventures'', Piers has nicknames for his closest friends, such as "Rai-Rai" for Raihan, "Nia" and "Sonny" for Sonia, and "Leo" for Leon.
* ''Anime/PrettyCure'':
** In the English dub of ''Anime/FutariWaPrettyCure'', Natalie and Hannah (Nagisa and Honoka) are fully cemented as friends when Hannah begins to call Natalie "Nat". This is a CulturalTranslation of what happens in the original Japanese, as there, their friendship is cemented when Honoka begins to use Nagisa's given name.
** In ''Anime/FreshPrettyCure'', after she gets over her fear of ferrets, Inori begins to call Tarte "Tarte-chan".
** In ''Anime/HeartcatchPrettyCure'', Erika sometiems refers to Tsubomi's mom Mizuki as "oba-sama" (roughly "Auntie").
** In the first episode of ''Glitter Force'' (the English dub of ''Anime/SmilePrecure''), Emily calls Kelsey "Kels" when she comes to sit with her.
** In ''Anime/GoPrincessPrettyCure'', Kirara nicknames Haruka "[=HaruHaru=]", as a play of her family and given names sounding so similar (Haruka Haruno).
* ''Manga/TheQuintessentialQuintuplets'': After falling for Fuutarou, [[{{Tsundere}} Nino]] begins calling him "Fuu-kun". This is significant since at first she referred to him [[LastNameBasis by his surname]].
* ''Manga/RentAGirlfriend'':
** Kazuya's ex-girlfriend Mami calls him "Kazu-kun." This, combined with her trying to break him and Chizuru up despite being the one to dump him, suggests that she may still be infatuated with him.
** Kazuya and Chizuru's grandmothers, being close friends, use affectionate nicknames for each other.
** Sasano, a senpai of Kazuya's group of friends, is generally called "Sasa-pai," a play on his name and the sempai honorific.
** Kazuya's friends sometimes call him "Kazu-chin."
* ''Franchise/SailorMoon'': The OfficialCouple has the protagonist Sailor Moon i.e. "Tsukino Usagi" refer to her boyfriend as Mamo-Chan" and him calling her "Usako" (which means little bunny).
* ''Manga/SeraphOfTheEnd'':
** Hyakuya Yuuichiro's name is shortened into simply "Yuu" by most of the people who are close to him, but some people add different [[UsefulNotes/JapaneseHonorifics honorifics]] into it, such as Yoichi with "Yuu-kun", Shinoa with "Yuu-san", and Mikaela with "Yuu-chan".
** The way Mikaela [[InsistentTerminology keeps referring to him]] as "Yuu-chan" since childhood to even after becoming teenagers actually becomes a plot point at one point: [[spoiler: A soldier initially refuses to tell Mikaela where Yuu is when he interrogates her, telling him that she won't sell out her comrades. However, after Mikaela gets angry at that and shouts at her that they are not Yuu-'''chan''' comrades, she picks up on that in surprise and then proceeds to give his partners red herrings about the location of the squad, but secretly whispers to him about Yuu's true whereabouts. When Mika asks her why, she replies that maybe she can trust a guy who calls Yuuichiro ''Yuu-chan''.]]
** In return, Yuu also calls Mikaela "Mika", regarding their closeness as ChildhoodFriends ([[HoYay and more]]).
* ''Manga/ShimejiSimulation'':
** Shijima is called Shimeji by Majime, which is often attributed to the two namesake mushrooms growing in her head.
** Mogawa calls both Shijima and Majime "Shimejime" in one chapter, which is a blend of the former's nickname and the latter's name.
* ''Manga/ShirokumaCafe'' has Grizzly's mom, who calls him "Guri-chan"[[note]]Translated as Lil' Grizz[[/note]]; she does this despite the fact he's an ''[[EmbarrassingNickname adult]]'' now.
* While Okabe of ''VisualNovel/SteinsGate'' likes referring to himself as "Kyouma Hououin" (and gives nicknames to his assistants), his childhood friend gives him one that's more to this trope.
-->'''Mayuri''': I still think "Okarin" sounds way cuter~
* In ''Literature/SwordArtOnlineAlternativeGunGaleOnline'' Karen "LLENN" Kohiruimaki's best friend Miyu "Fukarizoh" Shinohara calls her "Kohi."
* In ''Anime/{{Tamagotchi}}'', Orenetchi considers Kuromametchi his senpai and likes to call him "Kuromame-san".
* In ''Manga/TanakaKunIsAlwaysListless'', Miyano calls Echizen "Ecchan," who in turn calls her "Myaano" (みゃーの, elongating "mya").
* Though it starts out as a purposefully EmbarrassingNickname, "Bunny" gradually becomes this in ''Anime/TigerAndBunny''. Probably flips the switch from embarrassing to affectionate in Episode 13:
-->'''Kotetsu''': Are you alright, Bunny?
* ''Manga/TsubasaReservoirChronicle'': Fai just ''loves'' making these up for [[HoYay Kurogane]]. And there's a different one for ''every'' occasion!
* Rinne Berlinetta from ''Anime/VividStrike'' refers to her ChildhoodFriend Fuka as "Fu-chan". That fact that she does this [[WeUsedToBeFriends even a year after they had a nasty falling out]] is the first sign that her cold personality is merely a mask.
* ''Manga/WanderingSon'':
** A few volumes in Kanako gives Saori the nickname "Saorin".
** Makoto's nickname (Mako-chan) may also count, but she actually asked Shuuichi to call her that.
* ''Franchise/YuGiOh'':
** ''Anime/YuGiOh'' anime:
*** Yugi is called "Yug" by his best friend Joey in the dub.
*** Pegasus also tends to call male characters X-boy (e.g. "Yugi-boy" and "Kaiba-boy") in both the English dub and the original Japanese.
** In the ''Manga/YuGiOh'' manga, Yugi calls Yami "mou hitori no boku" (meaning "the other me" or "my other half") and Yami calls him "aibou" (the meaning can range from "partner" to "loved one" - although that would require a different kanji writing.)
** In the original version of ''Anime/YuGiOhGX'', both Sho and Kenzan call Judai "Aniki", a Japanese term for "big brother". (Meaning that they regard Judai as a BigBrotherMentor.) In the third season, Jim calls Kenzan "Dino-Boy" and calls Asuka "Tomorrow Girl". (It's a rough translation of her actual name; he tends to speak English most of the time.)
* Genkai from ''Manga/YuYuHakusho'' often refers to her student Yusuke as "Dimwit", whether he actually acts like an idiot or when she's moments away from death. Likewise, Yusuke sometimes calls her "Grandma".
** Kuwabara is usually the king of LastNameBasis, but in the Japanese version, Botan playfully calls him "Kuwa-chan" sometimes, and his sister calls him "Kazu," which is short for his given name Kazuma. In the final episode, two of his high school classmates also call him "Kazu."
* ''Anime/ZombieLandSaga'':
** [[TheNicknamer Saki]] starts dolling out nicknames to the girls of [[Characters/ZombieLandSagaFranchouchou Franchouchou]]. Though they also [[ZigzaggedTrope Zigzag]] between this and EmbarrassingNickname.
*** [[Characters/ZombieLandSagaSakuraMinamoto Sakura]]: [[ForeheadOfDoom Egghead]]
*** Yugiri: [[CoolBigSis Big Sis]]
*** Lily: [[TheBabyOfTheBunch Shrimp/Squirt]]
** [[Characters/ZombieLandSagaTheLivingAndOthers Maria]] calls her mother, Reiko, "mama". Though she's embarrassed to call her this in front of others
** In ''[[Characters/ZombieLandSagaGaiden Gaiden]]'', Hanako and Anna start calling Eikichi "Lil' Bro" based on his relation to Yuko, another of the Sagako Busters.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Asian Animation]]
* ''Animation/BreadBarbershop'': In "Choco's Blind Date", while he's dating Choco, Bagel keeps calling her "Cacao", the name for raw cocoa.
* In ''Animation/PleasantGoatAndBigBigWolf'', Little Fox is referred to by the affectionate nicknames of "Little Red" and "Little Pink Sister" by Wolffy.
* In ''Animation/SimpleSamosa'', Samosa's #1 fan, Vada, often refers to him by the nickname "Samosa-Bhaee" (that's pronounced "Samosa-Bhaya" and is Hindi for "Samosa-Bro"; the nickname is translated to just that in the [[DuelingDubs first English dub]] of Season 1).
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Audio Plays]]
* In ''AudioPlay/ThePrincessThieves,'' Princess Gwendoline's fiancée, Aaron, refers to her as "sweet pea."
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Blogs]]
* The founder of the ''Blog/KnightsOfFandom'' is known as "the Adoptive Mother of the Internet," or just "Mom" for short. Some of the members also call her "Empress."
* ''Blog/MakeUpAGuy'': Parodied with the guy who refers to their boyfriend as "savorie" instead of "sweetie."
* In ''Blog/OffThePageAndIntoLife'', Sam, Hank, and Henry all have a tendency to call Gail "Gaily." In [[PapaWolf Hank's]] case, it's out of [[DotingParent genuine adoration]] for his daughter, and as a result, is the only person who's explicitly allowed to call her that. Sam also genuinely means it to be affectionate, as he is Gail's best friend, but mostly prefers to call her "little lady." Henry, on the other hand, uses the name as TermsOfEndangerment, along with "lovebug." (However, it's explicitly stated that he teases Gail because he likes her.)
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Comic Books]]
* ''ComicBook/ArchieComics'': Veronica has a habit of referring to Archie as "Archiekins", while her friends call her "Ronnie".
* ''ComicBook/{{Batman}}'':
** Characters/{{Harley Quinn|TheCharacter}} calls [[Characters/BatmanTheJoker the Joker]] "Mistah J" and "Puddin", Characters/{{Batman|TheCharacter}} "Bats" or "B-Man", and [[Characters/BatmanPoisonIvy Poison Ivy]] "Red".
** [[Characters/NightwingDickGrayson Dick Grayson]] has affectionately called [[Characters/BatmanJasonTodd Jason Todd]] "Little Wing." In turn, Jason has called Dick "Dickie Bird," sometimes affectionately and sometimes mockingly.
** In a fit of karma, Jason's ''ComicBook/RedHoodAndTheOutlaws'' co-star, Roy Harper, calls him "Jaybird."
** Pre-Crisis, Jason's been called "Jay", "Jase" and "Master Jay" by Bruce, Dick, and Alfred respectively.
** In a possibly darker sense of this, it's common for Joker to call Batman "Batsy". Given who the [[MonsterClown the Joker]] is, Batman likely doesn't enjoy being called that.
** [[Characters/{{Batgirl}} Barbara Gordon]], AKA ComicBook/{{Batgirl}}, tends to get called either "Babs" or "Barb" by the Robins, especially Tim Drake, Dick Grayson, and Stephanie Brown.
** ComicBook/RasAlGhul addresses Bruce (and sometimes Tim) as "Detective" [[WorthyOpponent as a sign of respect]]. His daughter ComicBook/TaliaAlGhul usually calls Bruce "Beloved."
** Bruce sometimes calls Dick "chum", moreso in the '60s TV show.
** ComicBook/ThePenguin and ComicBook/TheRiddler are in a long-time VillainousFriendship, and actually call each other "Ozzie" and "Eddie" more than they do their actual names or even their aliases.
* ''ComicBook/{{Circles}}'': Paulie always insists for everyone to refer to him as "Paulie". He got this nickname from his college days when he met his first love Colin, and he was the first to call him "Paulie".
* ''ComicBook/{{Crimson}}'': Joe almost always refers to Alex as "bobo", which is Spanish for "silly". He tends to call Scarlet "red" or "rojita" because of her red head, but less often than he does with Alex.
* ComicBook/GreenArrow frequently calls his love interest ComicBook/BlackCanary "pretty bird".
* ComicBook/{{Mockingbird}} often calls her former husband ComicBook/{{Hawkeye}} by the name "Sport" when the two are currently together, which originally started off as a general term of endearment for any guy she was working with. Clint, meanwhile, calls her "Birdie", as a shortened form of her name.
* ''ComicBook/NewGods'': The HappilyMarried Scott Free and Big Barda do this a lot, with [[StatuesqueStunner Barda's]] primary nickname for Scott being that he is her [[TinyGuyHugeGirl "Little Man".]] Scott actually accepts this nickname whole-heartedly, and even refers to himself as such when talking with her sometimes, especially whenever they're being [[SickeninglySweethearts lovey-dovey.]]
* ''ComicBook/PaperinikNewAdventures'': Paperinik refers to Xadhoom as "Occhibelli" ("Beauty Eyes"). Please note she is a vengeful GeniusBruiser [[PhysicalGod space goddess]]. He gets away with this by being her OnlyFriend.
* ''ComicBook/SpiderMan'':
** [[Characters/MarvelComicsMaryJaneWatson Mary Jane Watson's use of "Tiger" to refer to Peter is somewhere between this and VerbalTic. On the one hand, she has used it to refer to other guys in the past and it was part of her early TotallyRadical persona. On the other, it becomes associated with Peter exclusively pretty quickly and only she is allowed to call him that. In the 1970s she also sometimes called him "Brown-Eyes".

** [[Characters/MarvelComicsLogan Wolverine]] liked to call his good friend Nightcrawler "Elf" in a slightly ironic fashion. Kitty Pryde preferred the more cutesy "Fuzzy-Elf".
** Wolverine, "Wolvie" to many of his friends, is also known for addressing [[Characters/MarvelComicsProfessorX Charles Xavier]] as "Charley" and "Chuck" (to the latter's annoyance), [[Characters/MarvelComicsJeanGrey Jean Grey]] as "Jeannie" or "Red", though he's not the only one to use that, and [[Characters/MarvelComicsCyclops Cyclops]] as "Cyke", depending on his current mood and opinion of him.
** Speaking of Cyclops, [[Characters/MarvelComicsBeast Beast]] used to call him "Slim." After ''ComicBook/{{Schism}}'', the two remark about how they no longer use each other's nicknames.

** In one of the later strips, this accidentally happened when Charlie Brown met Peggy Jean at camp. He got nervous, and introduced himself as "Brownie Charles". She called him that all the time from that point, and he actually kind of liked it, so he never corrected her.

** Alysanne is very fond of calling Kersea "Puppy." She later explains that this is because she sees her exactly as cute and innocent as a puppy, though also just as weak.
** Leonard constantly calling Lucas by his last name "Flowers" has shades of this. It started off as a means of belittling them, though as their friendship grew, so did the meaning of the nickname.
** Terroma is another major case of this, as he has nicknames for those especially close to him. More specifically, he is fond of putting the words "Sweet," "Pretty," and especially "Little" in front of Ellena's and Raenna's names.
* In the ''VideoGame/DevilMayCry'' fanfic ''Fanfic/FrailEquilibrium'', Dante takes to calling a particular character "Twig" on account of her slight build. It starts as a sarcastic nickname, but as the series progresses and their relationship improves, it takes a more affectionate tone.

* The title of ''[[https://www.fimfiction.net/story/225148/little-sun Little Sun]]'' by Rated Ponystar is Princess Celestia's nickname for her secret daughter, Sunset Shimmer. When asked why, Enzy excused it with the fact that he [[INeverToldYouMyName never got his name]] (He really didn't, but still) and continues calling him that even after he learned his name, much to Solon's [[{{Tsundere}} (secret)]] delight. [[spoiler: When they [[RelationshipUpgrade get together]], he adds new nicknames such as "doll," "cinnamon roll," and "sweetheart" to the list]].
** Solon's brothers (most commonly Heli, Jaan, and Jakah) often shorten Solon's name to "Sol." This shows that despite how [[AloofBigBrother distant]] they have been to him lately, they still love him. As a sign that they got closer, the werewolves seemed to have adopted this nickname for him as well.

* ''Fanfic/OnceUponAStudioVersionTwoPointOh'':
** In this extended cut of Creator/{{Disney}}'s ''WesternAnimation/OnceUponAStudio'', there are two major instances of this. During [[WesternAnimation/ClassicDisneyShorts Goofy's]] botched first attempt at the group photo, [[WesternAnimation/RayaAndTheLastDragon Raya]] casually refers to Mickey as "Mick" when letting him know that the coast is clear for everyone to head outside. Later, as WesternAnimation/{{Cinderella}} and [[WesternAnimation/{{Tangled}} Rapunzel]] seek to restore everyone's morale with a new rendition of [[WesternAnimation/{{Pinocchio}} "When You Wish Upon a Star"]] and initiate the successful second attempt, Cinderella warmly says "all yours, Raps", as she offers up the guitar her Fairy Godmother has created, so they can start up the song to lift everyone's spirits, in a very similar vein to Cassandra from ''WesternAnimation/TangledTheSeries''. Both of these instances truly show that [[TrueCompanions virtually ALL the Disney characters have been friends forever; whatever their individual film universe might be.]]
* ''Fanfic/PassingDays'': Many Servants have nicknames for Vy the protagonist. "Little sparrow," "little flower," "Princess," so on and so forth. Vy gives nicknames to some of these Servants in return, such as calling Robin Hood "Big Robin" and Achilles "Achi."

Meanwhile, Rarity dubs her "Mystery" and later "Luna's Melody" in an attempt to dissuade ponies from calling her "[[FantasticSlur Foal-Hunter]]."
* ''Fanfic/WingsToFly'' has various characters using nicknames like "Boss" or "Skipper" for Lucrezia Noin, based on her [[LastNameBasis well-known dislike of her first name]]. 324* In ''[[http://anime2.adult-fanfiction.org/story.php?no=600024011&chapter=1 Nightmares]]'', [[Anime/FullmetalAlchemist2003 Edward Elric]] takes to calling his lover, [[GenderFlip Rowan Mustang]], Nightmare - a reference to both her name and his wet dreams about her. The end note explains that Satsuki used to refer to herself "Big sister" or, more commonly, "Bigbig" when speaking to then baby Ryuuko but the aforementioned couldn't articulate that well so it came out as "Bihbi" and stuck, calling her that even as a teenager. In that line, we get Ryuuko who's referred to as either "Ryuu" "Munro", and, by Mankanshokus, "Maigo", although the latter is because they didn't know her name.

He also refers to her as "the sister I never had," while Varric is "the brother I never wanted." Varric himself calls the Hawke sisters "my girls." And Cullen calls his wife "darling" so often that their young daughter thinks it's her actual name.
* ''Fanfic/ChildBornOfLove'': After he took over his father, Kid prefers people simply call him "Death." Chrona, however, still calls him Kid, something he would rather she not do in front of their children.

* Early in ''Fanfic/MyMasterEd'', Edward decides to start calling the newly [[SlaveLiberation freed]]-and-christened Van Hohenheim as simply Van, claiming the name Hohenheim sounds like it belongs to an old man (prompting Van himself to think, ''But you named me yourself!''). Later, Van sometimes calls Ed "Master" just because [[{{Troll}} he knows it annoys him]].
* Izuku acquires a number of these in ''Fanfic/ThievesCanBeHeroes''

Razo calls his sister Rinna "Rinna-girl" because she's the only girl in a family full of boys, and calls his friend Enna "Enna-girl" because she reminds him of his sister. At one point his [[WillTheyOrWontThey soon-to-be]] LoveInterest Dasha asks him if he loves Enna, since "nicknames are a sign of affection." 603* This trope is actually a ''plot point'' in [[Literature/StayOutOfTheBasement one of]] R.L. Stine's ''Literature/{{Goosebumps}}'' stories. The main heroine's father calls her "Fatso" and "Princess". During the course of the story, her father starts behaving strangely, and it turns out to be because [[spoiler: it's actually an evil plant replacement. 608* ''Literature/HonorHarrington'':
** Eloise Pritchart is called "Ellie" by both her closest friend Kevin Usher and by Javier Giscard, who is the love of her life. Interestingly, her ''other'' closest friend, Thomas Theisman, is never seen to use the nickname -- perhaps because by the time they come to know each other well, she is already his President. (Theisman is, however, one of a ''very'' few people to still call her "Eloise" during her Presidency.)

** Queen Elizabeth III is "Beth" to her family.

** Occasionally used is 'little duck' from Katniss to Prim, due to the latter's habit of having her shirt tails untucked.
* ''Literature/TheHuskyAndHisWhiteCatShizunErhaHeTaDeBaiMaoShizun'': Mo Ran enjoys calling Chu Wanning "Baobei" and "Wanning" after they've gotten together, in addition to "Shizun", which takes on an affectionate tone, and in the extras "en gong gege" is also used.
* Mille of ''Literature/IlivaisX'' takes to calling Iriana "Ir" early on even before they have any romantic moments, with a justification along the lines of "it's four syllables in six letters!" Iriana has a bit of contempt for it at first but quickly gets over it.

** "Literature/IJustMakeThemUpSee": This poem refers to Isaac Asimov as "Dr. A.", which helps to characterize the fan as someone familiar with his published work. Isaac Asimov would later use this nickname as a PenName.
** "Literature/Liar1941": The RB model robots are called "Herbie" as a nickname.
** "Literature/{{Profession}}":

** "Literature/RejectionSlips": "Gruff", the second letter, addresses Creator/IsaacAsimov with the very informal "Ike". This shows the poem to be more 'rough' than the other two, as Dr Asimov was often distressed with [[AccidentalMisnaming people saying/spelling his name wrong]].
** "Literature/{{Runaround}}": Rather than using the model designation, [[YouAreNumberSix SPD 13]], Powell and Donovan call their robot Speedy.
** "Literature/TheUglyLittleBoy": When surprised by the reporters, Nurse Fellowes immediately names and nicknames the titular Neanderthal boy. His name is Timothy, but throughout the story, she calls him Timmie.

** Meg's twins are named Margaret and John, after their parents. Everyone calls them Daisy and Demi - Demi being short for "Demijohn." In the sequel ''Little Men,'' their baby sister is named Josephine after her Aunt Jo and is known in the family as Josie. Laurie and Amy's daughter is named Elizabeth [[DeadGuyJunior after Beth]], but while she's commonly addressed as Bess, the eponymous little men more often refer to her as "the princess."

Shortly, everybody else calls her "la gringuita".
* ''Literature/AMemoryCalledEmpire'': In Teixcalaan, "use-names" that pun on a person's [[FantasticNamingConvention proper name]] are a gesture of closeness. The protagonist finds it incredibly cute that the government agents Three Seagrass and Twelve Azalea call each other "Reed" and "Petal" offhandedly. In ''Literature/ADesolationCalledPeace'', it overlaps with YouCalledMeXItMustBeSerious when Nine Hibiscus's NumberTwo calls her "Mallow" in public.
* In ''Literature/TheMigaxCycle'', Leafsong calls Summer "Hacker," due to the fact that Summer is good at hacking technology, yet hates being called a hacker.

** Magda is often called Maggi by her loved ones.
* ''Literature/TheRailwaySeries'' has Falcon and Stuart (later Sir Handel and Peter Sam respectively), nickname Duke 'Granpuff' "because he's so wise and kind". Though never stated, the aforementioned nickname sounds a lot like 'Grandpa', so it's very possible that the two younger engines look up to Duke as not only a mentor but a grandfather as well. 678* ''Literature/ASongOfIceAndFire'':
** Viserys affectionately calls his younger sister Daenerys "Dany." It's also how she is mostly referred to in the narration (and by extension, the fanbase), even though it is rarely heard in the dialogue since [[spoiler:Viserys bites the dust midway through the first book]].
** Catelyn is called "Cat" for short by her relatives, husband Ned, and childhood friend Littlefinger. Her father calls her "little cat".
* ''Literature/SorryBo'': Nareh's friends usually nickname her Nar, and her girlfriend later does too.
* In the ''Literature/SouthernSistersMysteries'', Mary Alice calls Patricia Anne "Mouse," Patricia Anne calls Mary Alice "Sister," and Haley calls Mary Alice "Aunt Sister." 683* ''Franchise/StarWars'':

* ''Literature/TanteiTeamKZJikenNote'': At the end of ''The Disappeared Bicycle Knows'', [[TheSocialExpert Kuroki]] starts calling Aya "Aaya." 696** Tasha Ozera calls Dimitri "Dimka", demonstrating their close friendship.
* In ''Literature/WarriorCats'', on rare occasions, a cat will affectionately call their Clanmate by the first part of their name (for instance, Lionblaze once called Jayfeather "Jay".) It happens infrequently enough that it really stands out when it happens.
* Chaka of Team Kimba in the ''Literature/WhateleyUniverse'' often calls Ayla "Ayles". She also calls Hank "Hulkster" (he's a FlyingBrick). Ayla calls Jade and Jinn (and Jade's stuff) the "J-Team".

** Kendall once started calling Bianca "Binks" in a mocking tone. After growing a genuine familial bond with her younger half-sister, Kendall continues to call her "Binks", however in a much more loving tone. Eventually many of Bianca's friends would also refer to her as "Binks".
* ''Series/AmberBrown2022'': Amber's dad sometimes calls her "Ber" while speaking affectionately to her.

** Lorne is an enthusiastic [[TheNicknamer nicknamer]] in general, but he goes over the edge with Angel, with whom he has always been very flirty. He usually calls him Angel Cakes, but sometimes he calls him "pudding", "angel muffin", or other desserts.
--->'''Angel''': Stop calling me pastries!

* ''Series/{{Aranyelet}}'': Her parents sometimes call Mira "Mira baba"/"Mira baby", and Bianka calls Márk "manó" ("elf/imp", the HBO subtitles translated it with "Smurf") very often. 721* In the pilot of ''Series/{{Arrow}}'', Oliver Queen calls his SheIsAllGrownUp sister "Speedy" (to her annoyance) and he in turn is called "Ollie" (to his annoyance). 722* In ''Series/TheATeam'', Hannibal sometimes calls Face "kid". Granted, he's [[CoolOldGuy old enough]] to be Face's father, but it also underlines the quasi-father/son relationship that they have.
* ''Series/TheBalladOfBigAl'': "Big Al" was the name given to the complete allosaur skeleton that was found, partly because the paleontologists felt a little wistful Al lived fast and died young.
* ''Series/BandOfBrothers'':
** Replacement Edward Heffron is known only as 'Babe' by his comrades. A minor plot point of an episode is TheMedic referring to everyone on a LastNameBasis. At the end, when he finally calls Heffron 'Babe', it's a sign that he's getting closer to the rest of the men.
** TheMedic is an example of this trope himself. He's always called 'Doc Roe', and Dick Winters is the only one that calls him Eugene.
** Other soldiers were OnlyKnownByTheirNickname among the rest of the men, establishing it as this trope. It's telling that the only people who would use their proper names are their superiors. Denver Randleman was always 'Bull'. Lynn Compton was always 'Buck'. Warren Muck was always 'Skip'. Darrell Powers was always 'Shifty'. Walter Gordon was always 'Smokey'. Robert Wyn is only 'Popeye'. Floyd Talbert was sometimes 'Tab'. Johnny Martin was 'Pee-wee' in real life, but this wasn't used on the show.
** Other men got their surnames shortened into Affectionate Nicknames. They're usually only used amongst the close friends in the group. Don Malarkey is sometimes 'Malark'. Carwood Lipton is sometimes 'Lip'. Ed Tipper is sometimes 'Tip'. This is also used with FridgeBrilliance. When Major Winter announces [[spoiler: the end of the war,]] he notably calls Frank Perconte 'Perco'.
** Guarnere seems to mockingly nickname Private Hall 'Cowboy' for no real reason. But given Guarnere's {{Tsundere}} tendencies, their last scene together implies it was really this.
** Defied by Frank Perconte when Private O'Keefe says his friends call him 'Paddy'. He's pointedly only addressed by his last name ([[AccidentalMisnaming when Perconte can remember it anyway]]).
** Dick Winters never calls his friend Lewis Nixon by his full name. He's either 'Lou' or 'Nix'.
** A subtle one. David Kenyon Webster at first is simply known by his last name. After his POV episode, he shares a small FriendshipMoment with Joe Liebgott. A few times in the next two episodes, Liebgott calls him 'Web' as a sign of affection. [[OneSteveLimit Never mind that they actually had a Private Webb as well]].
* ''Series/BirdsOnTheWing'': Elizabeth and Samantha call Charles "Charlie".
* ''Series/ABitOfFryAndLaurie'': Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie affectionately call each other ''m'colleague'' or ''m'col'' (''m'coll''). In real life as well, because they are [[BestFriend best friends]].
* It's rare, but sometimes Edmund Series/{{Blackadder}} calls Baldrick "Balders." This is a particularly sweet example since Blackadder normally treats Baldrick poorly; it shows that underneath, he really does care about the guy.

** Booth is both the first one to call Brennan "Bones" and the only one allowed to call her that. She hated it at first, but has come to tolerate it. As of the second-season episode "The Boneless Bride in the River", she's even been willing to refer to herself by the nickname.
** Booth refers to everyone else at the Jeffersonian as "squints" (because they're always squinting at something in the lab). This starts out as an insult, back when Booth didn't really understand the impressive things they did, but as Booth becomes less of a FishOutOfWater in the lab, it becomes much more affectionate. The rotation of interns that replace Zack are subsequently nicknamed the "squinterns".

Later, however, she does let Jon refer to her as Dany, so perhaps she just needed to get used to it.

Louis came up with it ("Get the boy whatever he wants") after Daniel rejected his initial attempt to use his diminutive "Danny" like the bartender does, and Daniel accepted being addressed in this manner. However, when they see each other again in 2022, Daniel is 69 years old, and he's offended ("I'm not your fucking boy") when Louis mentions the old nickname ("I think it best we start when our boy's had a rest"). Although Louis is careful not to bring it up again when Daniel is awake, he can't resist saying it after his guest falls asleep ("I think the medication has overwhelmed our boy"), and he means it fondly because he requests that Rashid [[ComfortingComforter fetch a blanket to keep Daniel "warm with his dreaming."]]

It eventually becomes apparent, however, that he is also the sanest, most reasonable, and most morally decent of all the doctors at the Knick (and probably among the entire cast to boot). 947* On ''Series/TheWaltons'', Grandma and Grandpa both refer to their daughter-in-law Olivia as "Livvy." Grandpa also sometimes simply calls her "daughter," as she is the only daughter they have. Her husband John usually shortens her name even further to "Liv."
** One of Jim-Bob's many girlfriends inverted the trope, calling him "James Robert" as a nickname.
** Grandma and Grandpa often call each other "old man" and "old woman," which is clearly meant in this manner.
** Corabeth calls her husband "Mr. Godsey." It's mostly interpreted by others as yet another of her prissy affectations, but it's just as much this trope.
* ''Series/Warehouse13'': Steve Jinks picks up the nickname "Jinksy", which originated with [[TheNicknamer Pete]], but went on to predominantly be used by [[PlatonicLifePartners Claudia]]. In turn, he refers to her as "Claud," something that Pete and Myka both pick up but don't use nearly as often.
* ''Series/WordOfHonor'':
** Wen Kexing calls Zhou Zishu "A-Xu" and Gu Xiang "A-Xiang", and Zhou Zishu calls Wen Kexing "Lao-Wen".
** Zhao Jing calls the Scorpion King "Xie'er", though in this case, it's to manipulate the Scorpion King into thinking it's an affectionate nickname when Zhao Jing doesn't really care about him at all.
** Wen Kexing calls Chengling "little idiot". It starts as an insult then becomes a term of endearment.
* In the episode "Meat Jerkin Beef Boys" of ''Series/{{Workaholics}}'', Anders (who already has the in-series nickname of Ders) is visited by his father, who refers to him warmly as Dersy. In one episode, Adam calls him this as well.
* ''Series/{{Yellowjackets}}'':
** Taissa is called "Tai" sometimes by her friends and her girlfriend.
** Van's name is a nickname for "Vanessa" which no one calls her.

** Lottie is usually called that nickname rather than her full name "Charlotte."
** Callie's dad, Jeff, occasionally calls her "Cal".
* ''Series/YouMeHer'':
** After they get into a relationship, Izzy starts to call Emma "Em" at times. Emma's best friend Carmen also calls Emma this.
** Izzy's dad calls her "peanut", which she tells him to stop at first. Later her mom also does. She then calls Leo, a boy whom she bonds with [[spoiler:and later adopts as her son]] this too.
** Nina also calls Izzy "Iz" sometimes, as does her dad.
* ''Series/Zero2021'': Sirenetta is the nickname Anna's dad uses for her. He named his company after it too.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Music]]
* Music/RushBand: Used by fans and band members: "Dirk" (Geddy), "Lerxst" (Alex), "Pratt" (Neil). In the 2022 video for "YYZ", when the cops (voiced by Geddy and Alex) are talking at the end, Alex refers to Geddy as "Dirk". During the band's early years, Neil was also sometimes referred to as "The Professor"; he's gone by "Bubba" in his books about his motorcycle travels.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Podcasts]]
* The crew of ''Podcast/MissionToZyxx'' routinely refer to their intelligent spaceship ''The Bargarean Jade'' as "Bargie". Dar calls Nermut "Nermie" when they're flirting with him.
* ''Podcast/RedHanded'' host Hannah Maguire will sometimes call her fellow host Suruthi Bala by the nickname of "Suru".
* ''Podcast/RedPandaAdventures:'' It doesn't take long for the Flying Squirrel's calling the Red Panda "Boss" to become this rather than a reference to the fact that he's her employer. Once the two pass through the RelationshipUpgrade, this becomes a slight issue as her calling him "Boss" out of costume tends to draw attention. She tries a few nicknames in the early period, the most prominent being "Pappy", which the Panda considers more of a taunt than a nickname. The Flying Squirrel eventually settles on "Gus", a shortening of the Red Panda's real name, and occasionally "Gusworth" when issuing a FullNameUltimatum.
* Frank and Sadie Doyle of ''Podcast/TheThrillingAdventureHour'' will occasionally refer to one another as "Frankenstein" and "Sadistic." They also go for "Frank-Darling" and "Sadie-Love."
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Professional Wrestling]]
* Wrestling/SummerRae referred to Fandango as "my Baby Boopies" as part of her SickeninglySweethearts edge.
* Wrestling/LayCool had affectionate nicknames for each other to go with the massive amounts of LesYay. Layla was 'Lay' and Michelle was 'Chelle'.
* Wrestling/NatalyaNeidhart tends to get called 'Nattie' a lot by her friends, doubling as a CanonName since it's her nickname in real life - and her former ring name.
* Wrestling/AJLee fired back to Wrestling/{{Paige}}'s {{Yandere}} taunts by 'affectionately' calling her "my little crumpet."
* For a while Christian ''tried'' to pull this with Wrestling/TripleH. It didn't stick. The nickname in question was 'Trips'.
* Wrestling/AliciaFox is often called 'Foxy', sometimes even by her opponents.
* Wrestling/UltimateWarrior called his child fans "Little Warriors".
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Radio]]
* Several from ''Radio/TheAdamCarollaShow''. Adam's is Ace or Ace-Man, Engineer Matt "The Porcelain Punisher" Fondiler, Assistant Gary Half-Tard (and the now-fired Gary Full-Tard), Producer Chris "Maxipada" Laxamana, Assistant "The Stoned Pelican" Mike August, Agent James "Babydoll" Dixon, Newsgirl Alison "Baby Girl" Rosen, and of course Soundboard/Producer "Bald" Bryan Bishop. Frequent guest David Allen Grier is often referred to as DAG.
* In ''Radio/TheMenFromTheMinistry'' [[TheMistress Daphne Bentwater]] calls Sir Gregory "bunny". Sir Gregory in turn calls her "lotus blossom".
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Roleplay]]
* ''Roleplay/DawnOfANewAgeOldportBlues'':
** Hyeon gets called 'Hy-Hy' by his {{cloudcuckoolander}} drug dealer, which he likely wouldn't have been happy with if it had come from anyone else.
** Lawrence has 'sweetpea' for his daughter Ivy. Mirielle's parents also have a doting nickname for her, calling her 'Midget'.
** Amy and Finn try to call Katheryn 'Kathy' and 'Kath' respectively, though [[HatesBeingNicknamed she doesn't like it]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Tabletop Game]]
* The 2nd Edition ''TabletopGame/DungeonsAndDragons'' ''The Complete Book of Elves'' had a version of this. It stated that an elf doesn't keep the name his or her parents give him when born; he or she chooses another upon becoming legal age. The book also says, however, that even after that, an elf's parents and other elders he or she knew as a child might still call him or her by the "child name" on occasion, in which case it becomes a sort of Affectionate Nickname.
** At the very least, this is also stated to be true in 5th Edition.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Theatre]]
* ''Theatre/SpringAwakening'': Several characters occasionally call Melchior just "Melchi."
* In ''Theatre/{{Wicked}}'', Glinda takes to calling Elphaba "Elphie," much to her friend's chagrin.
* When they are first reunited early in ''Theatre/ThePhantomOfTheOpera'', Raoul teasingly calls Christine "Little Lotte" in reference to a childhood rhyme they shared.
* Actresses of the Creator/TakarazukaRevue can have one or more ''aishou'' (愛称): "pet name," "nickname," or "term of endearment". This is a confusing aspect of Takarazuka fandom and may take a while to get used to, as often their nicknames sound nothing like their stage names. The nicknames can be based on the actresses' real names, some quirk of their personality, or incidents behind the scenes. The actresses refer to each other using the nicknames on a daily basis, even in interviews.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Video Games]]
* ''VideoGame/{{Afterimage}}'': Ifree sometimes calls Renee as "Ree" because they're TrueCompanions. It also helps distinguish a light, heartwarming conversation from a more serious tone where Ifree calls Renee's name as-is.
* ''VideoGame/ANNOMutationem'': Ayane often calls Ann "darling". When Ann tells her to stop using it, Ayane playfully asks if Ann would be fine with "Baby", "Honey", or "Lover" instead.
* ''VideoGame/BlazBlue'' has several examples:
** Ragna being called "Rags" by Hazama.
** Noel being called "Noellers" by Makoto.
** Jin being called "Jinny" by Kagura.
* In ''VideoGame/CoffeeTalk'', Baileys' girlfriend Lua calls him "Bai".
* ''VideoGame/Cyberpunk2077'':
** PlayerCharacter V can amass quite a collection of those from different characters:
*** Rogue, Kerry and Viktor will call them "kid".
*** Romanced Judy will call female V "calabacina".
*** Jackie will call them "chica" (female V) or "mano" (male V).
*** Kerry also calls them "Little Bird" in one mission, and can call female V "doll" in one dialogue branch in one mission.
*** River calls romanced female V "babe".
*** In the [[FirstPersonSmartass questlog]] for the sidemission [[https://cyberpunk.fandom.com/wiki/Bullets "Bullets"]], Johnny refers to them as "(his) little merc". In the one for [[https://cyberpunk.fandom.com/wiki/The_Beast_in_Me:_The_Big_Race "The Beast in Me: The Big Race"]], he calls them "turbo". In the Polish dub, he calls them [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ykBQNr5SKo&t=358s "słonko"]] ("sweetheart") during "Sweet Dreams". [[spoiler:Dummied out voicelines indicate that he was supposed to call them "[[https://nebula-plays-cyberpunk.tumblr.com/post/641565292269600768/silverhand-hoe-prince-is-here-3-take-it-and My prince]]/[[https://nebula-plays-cyberpunk.tumblr.com/post/641565296274096128/silverhand-hoe-i-totally-didnt-wanna-hear-this princess]]" before the player picks "The Sun" ending. They were cut/don't trigger properly for unknown reasons.]] And of course, in the [[MemeticMutation (infamous)]] E3 2019 trailer, he calls them "samurai".
** Kerry calls his bandmates Nancy and Henry "Nance" and "Hank", respectively. Johnny and potentially V can call him "Ker".
** Alt calls Johnny "Lover" in one of the dialogue branches in Johnny's memories.
** V calls Judy "Jud" if you befriend her.
** Judy calls Evelyn "Evie".
* In the tenth installment of the ''VideoGame/DarkParables'', Princess Leda of Barsia is called "Goldilocks" by her sister, Queen Valla. (And yes, she's ''that'' [[Literature/GoldilocksAndTheThreeBears Goldilocks]].)
* In ''VideoGame/DawnOfWarII'', the Greater Daemon [[NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast Ulkair the Unclean calls the Chaos Lord Eliphas the Inheritor]] "Little Eliphas."
* In ''VideoGame/DeadlyPremonition2'', Patricia Woods is often called "Patty" by York.
* In the ''VideoGame/DetectivesUnited'' series, Agent Brown sometimes addresses James and Anna as "partner." Anna, meanwhile, occasionally refers to her colleagues as "the boys."
* In ''[[VideoGame/DotsHome Dot's Home]]'', Mavis's husband Karl calls her "Mavie", while Hank calls his wife Evelyn "Ev".
* ''Franchise/DragonAge'':
** ''VideoGame/DragonAgeOrigins'' has many:
*** If Alistair is romanced, he starts calling the Warden "my dear"; if he's not romanced, but has a high friendship level, he'll sometimes call him/her "my friend!" instead.
*** A romanced Zevran calls a Warden of either gender "''amor(e)''."
*** If the Warden reaches high approval with Sten, he addresses him/her as "kadan," meaning "close to the heart." He will also use this nickname for Shale, if the ''Stone Prisoner'' DLC is installed.
*** Morrigan starts greeting a Warden with high friendship by saying "What comes, my friend?" For the DefrostingIceQueen, this is a very big deal.
*** In the Human Noble Origin, the Warden's father calls him/her "Pup," which is a common nickname for Fereldan nobility to use with their children (owing to the country's love of their dogs).
*** In the ''Stone Prisoner'' DLC, Matthias addresses his young daughter as "Butterfly."
** In ''VideoGame/DragonAgeOriginsAwakening'', Nathaniel sometimes calls Velanna "my lady." She [[BlatantLies hates it]], of course.
** [[TheNicknamer Varric]] from ''VideoGame/DragonAgeII'' has nicknames for everyone (except [[SergeantRock Aveline]], whom he apparently fears too much for this, and Hawke). His closest examples to this trope would probably be "Daisy" for [[MoralityPet Merrill]] and "Sunshine" for [[ShipTease Bethany]], who also is occasionally "Milady Sunshine" or "my Sunshine."
*** Isabela joins in by calling Merrill "Kitten" and Bethany "Sweetness."
*** Anders will sometimes call a romanced Hawke "love." Sebastian uses the same nickname if he and a maxed-friendship Hawke enter a chaste marriage. Merrill will call a romanced Hawke "vhenan" (see below).
** Varric does it again in ''VideoGame/DragonAgeInquisition'', having nicknames for everyone except the Inquisitor (though sometimes he calls him/her "Your Inquisitorialness"). Probably the most affectionate one this time around is "Kid," for Cole.
*** Sera will give a nickname to a female Inquisitor who romances her. If she's not romanced, in her diary she dubs GadgeteerGenius Dagna "Widdle;" the ''Trespasser'' DLC reveals that they get together. She sometimes calls a non-romanced female Inquisitor "Her Gracious Ladybits," although how affectionate this is may be up for debate.
*** Leliana sometimes calls Josephine "Josie," an indication of their sister-like relationship.
*** A romanced Blackwall calls the Inquisitor "my lady." A romanced Cullen does too, but not nearly as often.
*** Solas calls an Inquisitor who romances him "vhenan," while Dorian uses "amatus" and Iron Bull uses "kadan." All three words mean roughly the same thing ("heart" or "close to the heart") in Elvhen, Tevene, and Qunlat, respectively. [[spoiler:If neither Dorian nor Bull is romanced, they may get together and use those nicknames for each other.]] Solas will greet a non-romanced Inquisitor for whom he has high regard as "My friend," which is a big concession from TheFriendNobodyLikes.
*** A friendly non-romanced Iron Bull will fondly refer to the Inquisitor as "boss." He's also the one who dubbed his lieutenant, Cremisius Aclassi, "Krem." He may have been the one to give the other Chargers their nicknames as well, but this is unconfirmed. Krem, meanwhile, calls Bull "chief" (or "the chief" when speaking about him to the Inquisitor).
*** If Morrigan was romanced by the Warden in the saved world state imported for ''Inquisition'', she refers to her beloved as "my Warden" or "my love." She also addresses her son Kieran as "little man."
*** Vivienne frequently addresses other characters as "darling" or "dear." However, depending on the context, it can be either an endearment or a condemnation.
* ''Franchise/TheElderScrolls'':
** From ''VideoGame/TheElderScrollsIIIMorrowind'', Crassius Curio, the LovableSexManiac Councilor of [[ProudMerchantRace Great House Hlaalu]], calls the PlayerCharacter "dumpling," sweetie pie," "pudding," and others in line with his CampGay dialogue. He does this [[ReallyGetsAround regardless of]] the PC's race or sex.
** Characters who marry the player character in ''VideoGame/TheElderScrollsVSkyrim'' will often address their spouse as "love" or "dear."
* In ''The Shadows of Karkhala,'' the final installment of the ''VideoGame/{{Enigmatis}}'' trilogy, the player character calls her partner "Rick" and the orphan child Fang "Kid."
* Very common in ''VideoGame/EnsembleStars'', to the point that character pages on the Wiki have appellation charts.

** Wataru calls Mitsuru and Nazuna "Little Rabbit", Tori "Hime-kun", and Yuzuru "Shitsuji-san".
** Sora calls Mitsuru "Mitsu-chan" and the twins "Hina-chan" and "Yuu-chan". He also calls Mika "Mika-chan-senpai".
** Mitsuru calls basically everyone [name or shortened version]-chan or -chan-senpai.
** A number of characters have special ways they refer to the player character: some of the first-years call her some variation of "nee-san", Natsume calls her "Koneko-chan", and Rei and Kuro both call her "Jou-chan".
* ''VideoGame/Fallout4'': [[IntrepidReporter Piper Wright]] likes to call the Sole Survivor "Blue" in reference to their iconic blue jumpsuit (even if they aren't wearing it at the time) and their constant "FishOutOfWater" look.
* ''VideoGame/FateGrandOrder''
** Mordred calls Mash "Shieldy" (based on her class, Shielder), several times during the London Singularity.
** Bradamante refers to Astolfo as "[[UsefulNotes/JapaneseHonorifics A-chan]]"[[note]]"Stolfo" in English version[[/note]].
** Christopher Columbus refers to the player character as "Partner" as opposed to "Master."
** After Mandricardo bonds surprisingly easily with the protagonist over their situation as underwhelming dudes among heroes, they proceed to call each other "My Friend" ([[GratuitousEnglish in full English)]] for the entire Atlantis chapter.
** The protagonist and Mash sometimes refer to Mephistopheles as "Mephy."
** By the time the protagonist catches up to Elisabeth and Osakabehime during "Halloween Strike! Demonic Climb - Himeji Castle War", the two have already become good friends, to the point that Osakabehime responds to Elisabeth's nickname of "Batty" with "El-El". Soon afterward, Osakabehime calls the player character "Ma-chan."
** Tamamo, Osakabehime, and Astolfo address Kiyohime as "Kiyohi".
** Oda Nobunaga calls Mori Nagayoshi by his childhood name, "Katsuzou," to show how close they are, as he was one of Nobunaga's retainers.
** Salome tends to call John the Baptist "Jokanaan", his name from the opera play, itself derived from his actual Aramaic name.
** Nobunaga had been referring to Akechi Mitsuhide as "Micchi" long before his official appearance, during several of Nobunaga's appearances including the GUDAGUDA Honnoji rerun and "Dead Heat Summer Race" events. She also calls him "Kumquat.", which is actually an inversion: 'Kumquat Head' was one of the insulting nicknames that Mitsuhide received whenever he messed up Nobunaga's orders in history (and theorized as one of the many possible reasons why he initiated the incident at Honnoji). In the game's context, Nobunaga used it on him when she's being less jokey and feeling disappointed.
** Lev Lainur shortens Olga Marie's name to just "Olga", showing how close he is to her.
** Most of the Crypters simply call Scandinavia Peperoncino "Pepe" for short, and it's clear that it's a term of endearment, given how he's appreciated by all of them.
** Pepe himself calls the Foreign Priestess "U-chan," though the reason for the nickname is currently unknown. [[spoiler:The fact that the Foreign God/Beast VII's true name is '''U'''-Olga Marie might shed a bit of light on this.]]
* ''Franchise/FinalFantasy'':
** In ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyIX'', despite having turned her husband, Regent Cid, into a frog for his womanizing, Lady Hildagarde is quite affectionate with him after turning him back into a human. She variously calls him "sugar-cup," "darling," and "my sweet froggy-woggy" (referential of the fact that he was a frog).
** In ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyX'' Wakka calls his WillTheyOrWontThey love interest Lulu 'Lu' as a term of endearment from time to time. Rikku more pointedly calls her cousin Yuna 'Yunie' a few times.
* ''Franchise/FireEmblem'':
** Tiki in ''[[VideoGame/FireEmblemShadowDragonAndTheBladeOfLight Shadow Dragon]]'' and ''[[VideoGame/FireEmblemMysteryOfTheEmblem Mystery of The Emblem]]'' calls her ParentalSubstitute Bantu "Ban-Ban" and later calls Marth "Mar-Mar" ([[{{Woolseyism}} an adaptation of her use of affectionate honorifics in the Japanese version]]). Justified in that, despite being a thousand-year-old [[OurDragonsAreDifferent Dragon]], slow aging means she's mentally and physically still a small child. This continues in ''VideoGame/FireEmblemAwakening'', where, despite growing physically into a young woman, she'll sometimes accidentally say "Mar-Mar" around people who remind her of Marth.
** Also in ''Awakening'', Cynthia's father calls her "Pega-Pony Princess", much to his embarrassment, which she demands he say to prove he's really her father.
* ''VideoGame/FiveNightsAtFreddysSecurityBreach'': Throughout the game, [[TokenHeroicOrc Glamrock Freddy]] calls [[ActionSurvivor Gregory]] "Superstar".
* ''VideoGame/GenshinImpact'':
** Lisa likes to call the Traveler "cutie" or "darling" exclusively.
** Tartaglia/Childe also frequently refers to them as "comrade."
** The wolves of Wolvendom refer to family as "lupical." Razor, who was raised by them, uses this term as well.
* Zoe calls the titular character of ''VideoGame/{{Ghostrunner}}'' Jack, apparently after a comment her friend Diego made about him being "all jacked up" when they were repairing him. [[spoiler:The Ghostrunner eventually takes it as his actual name in his final confrontation with the Architect.]]
* ''VideoGame/GoodbyeVolcanoHigh'': Fang is nicknamed "Fangy" by Stella, and Fang in turn calls her "Stel". Reed is also shown calling Naomi "Mims" in a fashback, but he doesn't do so in the present day.
* ''VideoGame/GrandTheftAuto'':
** In ''VideoGame/GrandTheftAutoSanAndreas'' the Triad clan led by Wu Zi Mu refer to their leader as their "lucky mole" due to his uncanny ability to participate in gunfights, car races, and video games despite being blind. All his friends refer to him as "Woozie."
** In ''VideoGame/GrandTheftAutoV'' Michael De Santa calls Trevor Philips "T" about 85% of the time, even when it's not necessary to hide their identities. Trevor returns the favor by often calling Michael "Porkchop" or "Sugartits," though [[TheResenter it's not always affectionate]].
* ''VideoGame/GreedFall'': Each of the four romanceable companions will refer to De Sardet exclusively using a pet name once their romance is committed to:
** Kurt adopts the affection title "Sweet Excellency"
** Vasco uses "[His] Tempest" from a love poem he recites
** Síora's is "Minundhanem"[[note]]"one who shares my mind" or "soulmate"[[/note]]
** Aphra's is simply "[Her] Beloved".
* In ''VideoGame/GrowingUp'', Jake's BullyTurnedBuddy Mort calls him "J-Dog".
* ''VideoGame/{{Hades}}'':
** Zagreus acquires a lot of these. "Zag" is the most common (used by Megaera, Thanatos, and Dionysus). He is also called "lad" (Achilles), "Little Hades" (Poseidon), "Prince Z" (Sisyphus), "little godling" and "dearest" (Aphrodite), "boyo" (Skelly), "little sprout" (Demeter), "boss" and "coz" (Hermes) and "hon" (Eurydice). Patroclus initially refers to Zagreus as "stranger" fairly neutrally but if the player improves their relationship, "stranger" becomes affectionate as well.
** On the flip side, Zagreus refers to Thanatos as "Than".
* ''VideoGame/IWasATeenageExocolonist'':
** Anemone is one of the few characters that doesn't go by a nickname initially, but you can give her one in an event. Her mother, on the other hand, calls her "Annie", [[EmbarrassingNickname which she doesn't like]] because it's too close to her mom's nickname "Anne" and she doesn't want to be associated with [[Theatre/{{Annie}} "that kid from the holovids"]] who shares that name. Meanwhile, her friends call her "Nemmie".
** Flulu's husband, Geranium, calls her "Flulu-belle".
** Besides being called various plant nicknames by their dad, [[spoiler:Symbiosis]], one of the love interests, calls Sol "sugarbug".
* ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfHeroesTrails'':
** ''VideoGame/TrailsFromZero'': Nadia calls Rixia her "Ri-chan."
** ''VideoGame/TrailsOfColdSteel'': Millium calls her Airgetlam "Lammy", depending on the script. She later gives Claiomh Solais a similar name ("Sammy"), but Altina is not having it. Speaking of Altina, Millium decides to call her "Tilly".
* ''Franchise/TheLegendOfZelda'':
** ''[[VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaOcarinaOfTime Ocarina of Time]]'': Malon often refers to Link as "fairy boy", thanks to noticing right away that he comes from Kokiri Forest.
** ''[[VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaTwilightPrincess Twilight Princess]]'': The Gorons all address each other as "Brother" (apparently there are no female Gorons seen in the game). After Link rescues Darbus, they also extend the same nickname to him, indicating that he is considered an honorary Goron.
** ''[[VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaSkywardSword Skyward Sword]]'': Zelda refers to Link as "sleepy head", due to his inability to wake up early, with her usually being the one to wake him.
** ''[[VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaBreathOfTheWild Breath of the Wild]]'':
*** Kodah, a Zora woman who had been a ChildhoodFriend of Link's a century earlier, always calls him "Linny." She briefly tries to address him by name in ''Tears of the Kingdom'', commenting that using a childish nickname for [[FamedInStory the Hero of Hyrule]] is rather inappropriate, but quickly decides that it doesn't sound right coming from her and just goes back to "Linny".
*** Urbosa calls Zelda "little bird". She would tell Zelda she uses that particular nickname because her dear friend, Zelda's late mother, used to call Zelda that as well.
*** Daruk continues to call Link "little guy" even after his death.
*** Purah calls Link "Linky" due to [[FountainOfYouthher childlike state]], though she keeps using the name even after managing to age herself up ini ''Tears of the Kingdom''.
* ''VideoGame/LikeADragon'':

** Masayoshi Tanimura gets called "Ma-chan" by the residents of Little Asia, who have [[RaisedByTheCommunity helped to raise him]] since he was a child. The original localization didn't translate honorifics, so there he was called "Masa" instead.
** ''VideoGame/YakuzaLikeADragon'':
*** Masumi Arakawa calls Ichiban "Ichi" as a sign of endearment, a sign that he treats Ichiban like a second son [[spoiler: and an early hint that he's Ichiban's ''real'' father]]. Subverted in the case of Jo Sawashiro and [[spoiler:Masato Arakawa]], who use the nickname "Ichi" as a way of [[TermsOfEndangerment talking down to him]], [[spoiler:though [[HeelFaceDoorSlam in his final moments]], Masato uses the name "Ichi" affectionately]].
*** Saeko is [[TheNicknamer the giver]] of these, calling Nanba "Nan-chan" and suggesting "Han-chan" for Joon-gi. She also receives one, being called "Sa-chan" by some party members.

** After you defeat the shadow of Yuichi Fukurai, Chairman of the Assembly of the Divine Power and the Mementos boss for the Fortune Confidant, he has a HeelRealization and apologizes to "Chi-chan." 1182** In Fortuna, there's Eudico who calls Tenno working for her "Sparky", Roky who calls the Tenno "glinty", and Ticker who calls them "Stardust" so often it might be her VerbalTic.
** Within ''seconds'' from the Tenno touching down on Deimos, cephalon Otak takes to calling them "Chip". [[spoiler:Once the player reaches the highest rank among [[DysfunctionalFamily the Entrati]], this family's members will decide on calling them Ayatan, referring to shining "stars" used to animate Orokin sculptures said to hold memories.]]

** [[TokenMiniMoe Pearl]] is called Pearly and Pearls by her cousin Maya and Phoenix, respectively.
** In ''VisualNovel/TheGreatAceAttorney'', Iris calls Ryunosuke "Runo", Susato "Susie", and Herlock "Hurley". Gina calls Ryunosuke "Oddo"; she pronounces his last name (Naruhodo) as "Narra-Oddo" and the last part stuck. She also calls Susato "Sooze".

** Enomoto calls Sasazuka "Cyber-seaweed head" as an insult but it's clear that both care about each other even if they would never admit it.
* In ''VisualNovel/DanganronpaTriggerHappyHavoc'', Kyoko tends to call Makoto "Open Book" (sometimes translated as "foolishly open/honest"), due to how Makoto wears his heart on his sleeve. At first, Makoto found the name annoying but by the time of the last Free Time event with Kyoko, it grows on him where Kyoko tells him she prefers him to be that way.
* ''VisualNovel/DanganronpaV3KillingHarmony'':
** [[ShipTease Kaito refers to Maki as "Maki Roll"]], much to her initial annoyance, though later on, she loosens up enough that she's okay with her friends calling her that. She isn't happy when [[ManipulativeBastard Kokichi]] starts using it.
** Kaito also starts calling Shuichi "bro".
** In the English translation[[labelnote:Explanation]]In the Japanese version, Shuichi politely calls Kaede "Akamatsu-san," and she asks him to use her first name instead[[/labelnote]], during Shuichi's Love Suite event with Kaede, [[ShipTease she asks him to call her by a pet name]] like "sweetheart", but then blushes when he does start using it. %% Not the case in Japanese, hence the "in the English translation" wording.
* In ''VisualNovel/HeartOfTheWoods'', Madison Raines most often goes by "Maddie," and her best friend Tara sometimes calls her "Mads." Shortly after meeting Morgan, Madison says that it's fine to call her "Maddie." In an interesting twist on this trope, Madison's LoveInterest Abigail exclusively calls her "Madison" when not using terms of endearment.
* ''VisualNovel/HigurashiWhenTheyCry'':
** Rena refers to Mion as "Mii-chan", despite her being a year older to denote how close they are.
** Mion dubs Keiichi the rather condescending "Kei-chan", but given [[spoiler:her rather huge crush on him]], it could be read as affectionate instead.
** The Games Club also uses nicknames to highlight their most definitive/best traits:

*** TrapMaster for Satoko, for her ingenuity in designing new ways to lure opponents into danger and trap them.

* In ''VisualNovel/KamigamiNoAsobi'', the heroine Yui got three different nicknames from three of her love interests: "Fairy", "Kitten", and "Weed", though the last one is more of an InsultOfEndearment.
* Misha in ''VisualNovel/KatawaShoujo'' refers to [[PlayerCharacter Hisao]] as "Hicchan" and her best friend [[StudentCouncilPresident Shizune]] as "Shicchan". This could also apply to her own name, as her real name is Shiina Mikado.
* ''VisualNovel/MajikoiLoveMeSeriously'' has plenty of nicknames to go around: Gen-san's actual name is Tadakatsu Minamoto, which doesn't come up very often. The whole family calls Shouichi "Cap", short for Captain, and Momoyo, being a year older than everyone else, is "Momo-senpai". Yukie is called Mayucchi by her friends and Mayumayu by Momoyo; Kazuko is known by all as Wanko, but she's also in the habit of doling out nicknames herself -- Tacchan for Gen-san, for instance, and Kuri for Chris. This is important later on in the latter two's respective routes, where Yamato starts calling them by their given names instead -- in particular, in Wanko's path, Momoyo catches on to their Relationship Upgrade via a sudden lack of this trope.

* Hamin in ''VisualNovel/SevenKingdomsThePrincessProblem'' dubs the PlayerCharacter "Glitter" during their first meeting. It takes a specific and pointed request from her to get him to even once call her by her actual name, and then he only does so to prove that he's serious about her.
* In the visual novel ''VisualNovel/SharinNoKuni,'' all three heroines have a unique nickname for the protagonist, Morita Kenichi. Touka always calls him by his full name, "Morita Kenichi". 1260* Averted and played straight in ''Webcomic/CobwebAndStripes''. Lydia calls Betelgeuse "BJ" not so much because of this trope, but more because using his actual name is how he's summoned, and he'd rather she only use it for that purpose. He, on the other hand, dubs her "Lyds" and "Babe," almost never calling her by her name. He also calls Jacques the skeleton "Bones."

Maxwell in return called Grape 'Kitty Whiskers' one time, which also belonged to his Ex-Girlfriend at one time.

* In ''Webcomic/MyImpossibleSoulmate'', Belial playfully calls Keegan "Shortstuff", despite the latter not even being that especially short.
* In ''Webcomic/MysteryBabylon'', Kick Girl sometimes affectionately calls Delilah "Little Flower", though Delilah dislikes the nickname.
* Tetsu in ''Webcomic/NeverSatisfied'' is on the receiving end of several, mostly from their mentor and her cheerful wife, though their best friend joins in the fun as well. Their reaction is usually [[EmbarrassingNickname a little miffed]], especially when January repeats the nicknames.
* In ''Webcomic/{{Roommates}}'' many people end up with a nickname or two, but Mr. King [[spoiler:(aka. the Erlkönig)]] calling his (ex-)wife [[spoiler:(Jadis, the White Witch)]] "My Snowflake" takes the cake (and is a CMOF).
* Blue from ''Webcomic/TheSilverEye'' calls Velvare "Bay", short for his original name, Bhatair.
* These pop up a lot in ''Webcomic/{{Skyvein}}'', one example is Emi calling her brother Firefly, and he calling her Meteorite.
* Mr. and Mrs. Cake in ''Blog/SliceOfLife'' always call each other using a variety of confectionery-related terms, with a RunningGag that they don't reuse the same nickname in the same strip.
-->'''Mrs. Cake:''' "Well, let's get this over with, ginger-beer."\

* In ''Webcomic/SomethingPositive,'' childhood friends [[LikeBrotherAndSister Davan and Aubrey]] sometimes call each other "Woogie" (Davan) and "Monkeybutter" (Aubrey). A {{Flashback}} series of strips gives the origin of this in their first meeting: Davan showed her a toy ''[[Franchise/StarWars Wookie]],'' which she couldn't pronounce, while "monkeybutter" was his weird attempt at an insult that she found hilarious.
* ''Webcomic/TilDebtDoUsPart'': Invoked by Subin. To make their fake marriage more convincing, she insists that she and Yejun call each other "Honey", "Baby", or "Sweetheart" thrice a day. This "H.B.S." training causes a lot of romantic tension when the nicknames start to hit home.
* ''Webcomic/TonyComics'': Tony's parents affectionately refer to him as "Shortcake". [[EmbarrassingNickname He finds the nickname embarrassing, though]].
* ''Webcomic/{{Unsounded}}'': Duane calls Sette a little squirrel on several occasions while he's feeling a fatherly sort of affection for her.

* ''Webcomic/{{Widdershins}}'': Heinrich Wolfe calls [[HeterosexualLifePartners Jack O'Malley]] "Mal". A bonus comic reveals that it began soon after their [[FireForgedFriends fraught first meeting]] to poke gentle fun at O'Malley's refusal to pronounce Wolfe's surname correctly, but quickly became a term of endearment.
* ''Webcomic/{{Zoophobia}}'''s Damian (and a few other characters) calls Addison "Addi".
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Web Videos]]
* ''WebVideo/CriticalRole'':
** [[TheNicknamer Vax]] uses these on occasion, although they don't tend to stick. He seems to be particularly fond of mangling Tiberius's name ("Tibber-hoods" got him magically silenced) and also calls Keyleth "Kiki" at least once. Vax is a nickname in and of itself, a shortening of "Vax'ildan".
** Subverted: the whole group -- especially Tiberius -- calls Keyleth "Your Highness", which was thought to be an affectionate term for her as a representative of the Air Ashari. The Fire Ashari in episode 22 do refer to her as "Princess", however.
** [[TheHeart Jester]] from Campaign 2 is often referred to as "Jessie" or "Jess" by the rest of the party, often when she's in danger or upset about something. Her mother refers to her as "my little sapphire" which alludes to her mother's stage name "The Ruby of the Sea" and Jester's blue skin.

* ''WesternAnimation/AllHailKingJulien'': While he generally uses their full names the most often, when King Julien is feeling particularly close, Maurice becomes "Mo-mo" and Clover becomes "Clo-clo". Even rarer is "Julie" for Julien himself, which due to his position has so far only ever been used by his parents and his old friend Rob.
* Megan Clark of ''WesternAnimation/TheAmazingSpiez'' has personal nicknames for her brothers. Lee has "Jockstrap", Marc has "Genius" and Tony has "Brony".

** Though Caitlyn is named "Cupcake" by Vi in a teasing manner at first and Caitlyn tells her to stop calling her that, it quickly grows in affection.
** Vi is generally [[TheNicknamer prone to giving these out]] to people she's fond of; she also calls her younger sister Powder "Pow-Pow", and calls Ekko "Little Man".
* In ''WesternAnimation/{{Archer}},'' after Cheryl and Cecil have stopped fighting at the end of "Sea Tunt: Part 1'' because he was trying to get her put under conservatorship so he could have her split of their parents' inheritance, he calls her "Beans" while he apologizes.
* In ''WesternAnimation/AvatarTheLastAirbender,'' Toph calls Aang "Twinkle Toes". It started off as an insult, before soon turning into an InsultOfEndearment after they became friends. And as the sequel series ''WesternAnimation/TheLegendOfKorra'' shows, she continued using the nickname well into their adult years, to Aang's embarrassment.
* In ''WesternAnimation/BatmanTheAnimatedSeries'', Harley Quinn usually refers to the Joker as either "Mistah J" or "Puddin'", and Poison Ivy as "Red".
* '' WesternAnimation/{{Beetlejuice}}'' is more likely to address [[MoralityChain Lydia]] as "Lyds" or "Babes" than her real name. On very few occasions, he calls her "my dear," although this usually for playful drama. She returns it by sometimes calling him "BJ" or "Beej," and the instances of her doing so become more frequent as the series goes on. Their car, the Dragster of Doom, is affectionately dubbed "Doomie" by both.
* ''WesternAnimation/BubbleGuppies:''
** Molly refers to Gil as "Gilly". Doesn't help their [[PuppyLove "subtext"]] at all.
** Deema calls Nonny "Nonners".
* ''WesternAnimation/CaptainPlanetAndThePlaneteers'': Wheeler, who already loves [[TheNicknamer giving out nicknames]], naturally has his own special variety for other members of the team.
** When talking to or about Captain Planet (who's only known by that name and title), Wheeler often shortens it to "Cap." This stands out a bit because the others all tend to use the full name.
** Wheeler has an OddFriendship with [[TheBabyOfTheBunch Ma-Ti]] and often calls him "little buddy" or variants thereon.
* ''WesternAnimation/ChipNDaleRescueRangers'':
** Tammy calls Chip "Chipper". To be fair, so does Dale on occasion.
** Speaking of Dale, notice how he is the first to call Foxglove "Foxy".
** Camembert Kate still calls her son Monterey Jack "Cheezer", [[EmbarrassingNickname much to his dismay]].
* In ''WesternAnimation/CodeLyoko'', Odd, Urich, and Yumi often call Aelita "Princess", and Jérémie "Einstein".
* In ''WesternAnimation/CodenameKidsNextDoor'', Numbuh One's girlfriend Lizzie often calls him "Nigey" as his real name is Nigel. His teammates, and occasionally enemies, often tease him about it.
** Numbuh 5 calls her candy-hunting rival and former friend Heinrich Von Marzipan "Heiny", which is hated by the latter for obvious reasons. Incidentally, his nickname for Numbuh 5 is "Liebchen" (or "dear" in German).
** Numbuh 362 tends to call Numbuh 1 "soldier".
* ''WesternAnimation/DanielTigersNeighborhood'':
** Jodi Platypus's mother often refers to her as "[=JoJo=]-bean."
** Miss Elaina's mother Lady Elaine sometimes refers to her as "Elaina-berry."
* ''WesternAnimation/{{Daria}}'':
** [[BumblingDad Jake]] often refers to [[TheSnarkKnight Daria]] as "Kiddo," though he never uses it for his younger daughter, [[LovableAlphaBitch Quinn]]. This comes among other hints that Jake and Daria are particularly close.
** [[TheSlacker Trent]] always refers to Jane as "Janie." This could also be used to show their particular closeness (though there's at least one example of their other brother, Wind, using this one, too).
* ''WesternAnimation/DarkwingDuck:'' Darkwing calls his daughter "hockey player", "slugger" and other similarly descriptive pet names in addition to "Gos" and refers to Launchpad as "sidekick" or "L.P." during friendlier moments. Launchpad, still TheNicknamer, calls Darkwing "D.W." habitually and Gosalyn "Gosaroonie" in at least one episode.
%%** Darkwing Duck: "justice ducks, assemble" (The Justice Ducks), "hockey player" (Gosalyn Mallard), and "sidekick"/"L.P." (Launchpad).
%%** Launchpad [=McQuack=]: "D.W." (Darkwing) and "spider" (Archie).
* ''WesternAnimation/{{Doug}}'':
** The title character's older sister refers to him as "Dougie."
** Doug himself calls his dog Porkchop "Porky".

* On ''WesternAnimation/DragonTales'', Quetzal often refers to Max as "Maxito," Quetzal being of Hispanic origin.
* In ''WesternAnimation/DuckTales1987'', a number of the characters have friendly nicknames for the others. Launchpad, being TheNicknamer as a matter of course, has special nicknames he uses for the people close to him: "little buddy/little buddies" for [[IntergenerationalFriendship the triplets and Doofus Drake]] and "Mr. [=McD=]" for Scrooge. Scrooge himself has (mostly) less effusive versions: the triplets often end up being called "my boys" or "lads", Webby gets "me darlin' Webbigail" and, while he calls Launchpad by his first name all the time, [[{{Tsundere}} at rare gentle moments]], he'll append "lad" or "my boy" to it.
* ''WesternAnimation/DuckTales2017'':
** Webby is sometimes called "Webs" by the triplets (usually Louie); meanwhile, her best friend Lena often calls her "Pink".
** Gladstone Gander does this often with his relatives (calling Huey, Dewey and Louie "Red Hat", "Dewdrop" and "Greener Pastures" respectively), though with him it comes across as more a shallow attempt to be seen as the "cool uncle".
** Goldie O'Gilt tends to call Scrooge "Scroogie" (sometimes genuinely, sometimes teasingly). She also later takes to calling Louie "Sharpie" (in reference to his sharing Scrooge's trait of being "sharper than the sharpies") - at first dismissively, but later with more affection as she finds herself genuinely growing to like him.
* In the ''WesternAnimation/EarthwormJim'' cartoon, Jim uses "Fuzzbuddy" for Peter Puppy. He has a whole slew of affectionate terms for Princess What's-Her-Name, including "My luxuriant tapestry of bliss".
* On ''WesternAnimation/ElinorWondersWhy'', Elinor's mother Ranger Rabbit sometimes refers to her as "Honey Bunny."
* ''WesternAnimation/TheFairlyOddParents'': Wanda calls Timmy "Sport" very often, though one episode explains that it's because she keeps forgetting his real name.
* In ''WesternAnimation/{{Gargoyles}},'' the titular species originally felt that they had NoNeedForNames, but occasionally use these instead. Most notable is [[TheLeader Goliath]] calling his former mate [[BigBad Demona]] his "Angel of the Night."
* ''WesternAnimation/GravityFalls'':
** Mabel is fond of calling Dipper "Bro-Bro" or "Broseph".

* ''WesternAnimation/HeyArnold'':
** Helga's older sister Olga calls her "Baby Sister". Helga [[EmbarrassingNickname clearly doesn't like it.]]
** Arnold's Grandpa often refers to him as "Short Man". [[spoiler:This turns out to be a case of HiddenInPlainSight meeting NotHyperbole when it's revealed that Arnold's mysterious surname is, in fact, "Shortman."]]
* ''WesternAnimation/JorelsBrother'': The title character is always known by others just as "Jorel's brother"; out of universe, nobody knows his true name, while in-universe, only his family members know it. As a result, most of his family members have their own nickname for Jorel's brother as it wouldn't make sense for them to call him that, but they also don't say his real name onscreen to keep the mystery. For example, his older brother Nico calls him "dude"; Granny Gigi calls him by an usually dragged-out "booooy...", and Granny Juju calls him "dear". [[TalkingAnimal The talking pets]], on the other hand, just call him "Jorel's brother" like everyone else does, and Jorel himself rarely speaks on-screen so he doesn't really call his brother anything.
* Jimmy of ''WesternAnimation/JimmyTwoShoes'' calls Lucius Heinous the 7th "Lucy", despite Lucius' hatred of the name (and of Jimmy).
* A few episodes of ''WesternAnimation/{{Kaeloo}}'' have Mr. Cat refer to Kaeloo as "coochy-coo".

** [[AlphaBitch Chloé]] frequently calls her ChildhoodFriend Adrien "Adrikins".
** Plagg, Cat Noir's [[MentorMascot kwami]], calls Tikki, Ladybug's kwami, "sugar cube". She hates it and threatens to call him "stinky sock" in retaliation, [[InsultBackfire but he likes the sound of it]].

* ''WesternAnimation/MyAdventuresWithSuperman'': Lois soon develops a habit of referring to Clark as "Smallville", the same as her comic book and movie incarnations. Except this version reserves it strictly for romantic occasions.
-->'''Lois''': You know, when I was getting ready, I kept wondering if this counted as a date.
-->'''Clark''': ''(drapes his jacket around her shoulders)'' Aannd... what did you decide?
-->'''Lois''': ''([[CrushBlush blushes]] and pecks Clark's cheek)'' [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TswWkYv2i60 Walk me back, "Smallville.]]

* ''WesternAnimation/TheOwlHouse'':
** Amity's family calls her "Mittens". When it comes to her older siblings, it cycles between this and an EmbarrassingNickname depending on how nice they're being at the time, while her mother is [[AbusiveParents distinctly less affectionate whenever she does so]]. The nickname came from her tendency to wear mittens made of her father's [[OurHomunculiAreDifferent abomination sludge]] as a child, though she doesn't piece this together until the end of Season 2.
** [[spoiler:Hooty and Lilith]] of all people end up becoming friends in the season 2 premier, and almost exclusively refer to each other as [[spoiler:"Hootsifer" and "Lulu"]] afterwards.
** Eda's mother Gwendolyn calls her "Witchlet" and her older sister Lilith "Sweet Flea". Her father is also shown calling her "pumpkin" in a flashback (it's unknown if he as a nickname for Lilith as they never interact onscreen).

When she finally stops trying to make him nickname her and confronts him about it, he says, "I call you Candace, but not because I don't care enough to come up with a cute nickname for you. I call you Candace because I happen to really like that name." Aww...
** There are some straight examples too. Candace often calls Stacy 'Stace', and Isabella's mother calls her 'Isa'.
* As of the ''WesternAnimation/ReadyJetGo'' episode "Constellation Prize", Sean refers to his mother as "Dr. Mom".
** As of Season 2, Jet loves calling Sean "Sean-zo".
* In ''WesternAnimation/RickAndMorty'', Rick affectionately refers to his daughter Beth as "sweetie," and she's the only member of the family he doesn't insult or swear at. From Season 3 onwards, he sometimes addresses his granddaughter Summer as "Sum-Sum". Other one-off nicknames for her include Summerfest and Summer-Camp.

* ''WesternAnimation/SamuraiJack'' got his name -- or rather, the one he goes by -- this way. When he arrived in Aku's dystopian future, the first folks he met were a bunch of street toughs who called him "Jack", as a way of saying "dude" or "pal".
