2	The fourth book in ''Franchise/TheWitcher'' series by Andrzej Sapkowski. The book was originally released in Polish, and an English translation was released after numerous delays in August of 2013.

4	While mentoring Ciri in the art of magic, Yennefer is invited to the upcoming council of sorcerers at the Isle of Thanedd. Thanks to the insubordination of Ciri, who is not thrilled by the prospect of becoming a humble student of magic, they reunite with Geralt. However, things go downhill fast; the schemes wrought during the council go well beyond the average when a coup d'etat breaks out amongst the mages. Meanwhile, Nilfgaard wastes not the opportunity to renew its northward onslaught, starting a massive campaign that leads them to crush the Northern Kingdoms one by one.

11	** The Second Nilfgaard War has the Nilfgaardians act in a truly monstrous fashion, but the Kings in the North act thoroughly [[TitleDrop contemptible]] during it as well. Still, Nilfgaard is actively destroying nations while the Northern monarchs are just profiting from it.
12	** Displayed on smaller scale, when a Kaedweni platoon leader instructs his men to absolutely stay their hand from pillaging the villages they pass through in order to appear "representable", but concedes that raping women is okay, [[PragmaticVillainy as long they do it out of sight]].
13	* BlueAndOrangeMorality: Tissaia finds the idea ''ludicrous'' that a mage would ever choose their homelands over their fellow wizards. She is disgusted, [[TitleDrop contemptuous even]], that mages would fight for the North against other mages who would fight for Nilfgaard. She also believes magic should be a wizard's only passion and that all sorceresses should be sterilized.[[note]]The last one is, admittedly, because sorceresses who ''can'' get pregnant (which is not all that common in the first place anyway) more often than not give birth to stillborn or hideously deformed children with all sorts of disabilities.[[/note]]
14	** This leads to a BreakTheHaughty moment when she discovers not only that mages ''do'' hold nationalist sentiments, but they are willing to fight and die for them. Compared to their homelands, political power, and race, magic is a ''minor'' consideration for them. She finds this as baffling as they likely find her assertion to the contrary.
15	* BreakTheCutie: The entire book is one long, drawn-out case of cutie-breaking for Ciri. Aside from suffering her recurring nightmares with the Nilfgaardian black knight, [[spoiler:Ciri is nearly captured by multiple people during the Thanedd Coup (including the aforementioned black knight), is forced to draw blood for the first time, ends up stranded in a desert where she is forced to eat bugs and drink mud to stave off starvation and dehydration, loses the unicorn she befriended over the course of that ordeal, is captured, hog-tied and nearly raped by a band of brigands, only to be rescued by ''another'' band of brigands, one of whom more or less ''does'' rape her. It's no surprise Ciri's character begins walking down a dark road.]]
16	* BroughtDownToNormal: [[spoiler: While not normal, Ciri relinquishes her potential to become a godlike sorceress and effectively depowers herself as the means of resolving TheFinalTemptation. It's not until [[Literature/TowerOfTheSwallow two books later]] that by accident a psychic probing her mind [[TraumaticSuperpowerAwakening reawakens those powers]]]].

21	** On a larger scale, the Nilfgaardian Empire swiftly crushes nearly all resistance in the Northern Kingdoms upon arrival, leaving the last few free kingdoms scrambling to sign non-aggression treaties.
22	* DecadentCourt: The mages live lives of hedonistic luxury, fine food, sex, and gossip. [[spoiler: They're also now bitterly divided between those who support the North and those who support the Empire]].
23	* DirtyCoward: How the North's monarchs react to Nilfgaard's invasion once things go south. ''Nobody'', even the rulers that are established as compassionate and honoring their alliances, is willing to help Aedirn or Rivia, declaring them lost causes. This bites everyone in the ass when they realize too late this isn't some border skirmish, but a total invasion that isn't gonna stop on its own.
24	* TheDragon: Vilgefortz has been serving as head enforcer to Emhyr for decades. In truth, he's been TheStarscream all the time. Emhyr wasn't fooled for a second, though.
25	* ForWantOfANail: The narration jokes that the history of all the events that happened later would have been much different if, when Geralt woke up as the Thanedd coup was kicking off, he had relieved himself in a flowerpot in his and Yennefer's room (as most would have), instead of wandering around looking for a bathroom.
26	* GoodCannotComprehendEvil: Tissaia's disgust for Philippa and Dijkstra's arrest of the Thanedd Coup members is built around her belief that the North is full of genocidal murderers even if Nilfgaard is just as bad. The idea that the people they've arrested really ''are'' dangerous murderers who want to slaughter their fellow mages for Nilfgaard doesn't cross her mind.
27	* KickTheDog: After ''Blood of Elves'' made things murkier, Nilfgaard is back to being evil.

34	** Later in the prologue, said horse messenger is irritated by a flea bite on a spot on his back that he can't reach -- the exact spot where he is fatally shot by an arrow, [[BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor relieving his itch]].

The only way they can enjoy their extremely priviledged position and all the luxuries is by staying loyal, because [[spoiler: Nilfgaard is keeping its magic users on an extremely short leash, reducing them to civil servants with minimal pay and close to zero political power beyond said civil service]]. While it makes sense why [[spoiler: [[TheStarscream Vilgefortz]] and [[NotInThisForYourRevolution Francesca]]]] want to defect, nobody else stands to benefit by following them.
36	* MagicKnight: Geralt never suspects [[spoiler: Vilgefortz]] has both magic ''and'' skill in physical combat, even though he notes that he'd been a mercenary in his youth. It ends poorly for him.
37	* MookHorrorShow: Geralt, looking for Ciri amidst the chaos of the Tanedd coup and [[RageBreakingPoint beyond pissed off]] at this point, subject a bunch of Scoia'tael who were assisting in the staging of the coup to one, slaughtering a dozen of them before the eyes of a terrified Cahir, who calls him a "white-haired monster" and compares him to a [[AnimalMotifs tiger]] with how [[TranquilFury seemingly calmly and coldly]] he eviscerates one elf after another.

40	** Philippa, in particular, is a Redanian nationalist and is genuinely outraged by the betrayal of the mages allied with Nilfgaard. 49	* QuestionableConsent: Ciri is rescued from gang rape by the Rats, AffablyEvil types, after she kills her first person. Traumatized, Ciri doesn't resist when Kayleigh tries to have sex with her but is obviously terrified. Mistle "rescues" her only for her to have sex with her instead. Ciri still feels frightened and contaminated by her rape by Mistle. She continues to exhibit signs of dissociation, submissiveness, and StockholmSyndrome several books on. It could be a genuine depiction of a young teenager who’s been through wave after wave of trauma while being sexually menaced by everyone she encounters. She could easily have fixated on Mistle as the least horrifying threat and channeled her subsequent rage and humiliation into violence toward the Rats’ victims. Survival does scary things to people.
50	* RagtagBunchOfMisfits: The Rats, a colorful bunch of late teens from all places and social classes, form their own gang.
51	* RapePillageAndBurn: How Nilfgaard handles the Second Invasion of the North. The real kicker? They don't do it ForTheEvulz as the Nordlings think - it's a pre-planned, methodical way of bringing complete ruin to the places they know they will never accept any peace treaty, just to cripple the North for good.
52	* RewardedAsATraitorDeserves: Nilfgaard abandons the elven Scoia'tael partisans that assisted their invasion of the North by refusing to let them retreat to the Valley of Flowers, behind the front lines.
53	** Worse, [[ShameIfSomethingHappened to safeguard the well-being of the elves of the Valley]], they are expected to [[StandYourGround continue fighting to the last elf]].
54	* SelfMadeMan: Vilgefortz went from the gutter to being the most powerful man in the North after the monarchs.
55	* SesquipedalianLoquaciousness: Ralf Blunden, The Professor (no, not the one from the game!), speaks this way.
56	* SpannerInTheWorks: Yaevinn, a Scoia'tael commando, randomly decides to kill a human rider passing by [[KickTheDog solely for being a human]]. That rider was an Aedirnian messenger bearing an important message for King Demavend of Aedirn, warning that his planned FalseFlagOperation against Nilfgaard had been rumbled. Because the message never reaches him, Demavend proceeds with the operation, which fails. Because a racist elf decided to kill a human for no good reason, Aedirn's plan to give the Northern Kingdoms a PretextForWar backfires hard, giving ''Nilfgaard'' the excuse it needs to invade.
57	* TheStarscream: Vilgefortz is this to Emhyr [[spoiler: and betrays him during the Second Invasion by sending him a False Ciri.]]
58	* StockholmSyndrome: Implied to be the case for Ciri and her feelings towards Mistle. Even though Mistle effectively raped her, Ciri gets attached to her because she had just gone through a severe TraumaCongaLine and the Rat was the first person to consistently treat her with some measure of respect and kindness up until that point. That, and because the alternative was to be alone in a desert where she almost died.
59	* TeleportationMisfire: The portal in the Tower of the Seagull is supposed to be connected to the mysterious Tower of the Swallow but has long been known to malfunction. [[spoiler:Ciri learns this the hard way when she ends up in the middle of the [[ThirstyDesert Korath Desert]] after using the portal to escape from Thanedd.]]
60	* WarIsHell: The Second Nilfgaard War is portrayed for Aedirn and Lyria has "War on everything alive". Nilfgaard practices scorched earth, and it is gruesome.
61	* WeCanRuleTogether: Vilgefortz really thinks Geralt should abandon being a Witcher, study to be a sorcerer, and become his right hand man. Geralt is genuinely confused as to why he even cares.

In the aftermath, Geralt is gravely injured, Yennefer is missing in action, and Ciri is left stranded alone in a desert far from civilization.]]
