->''"Tidigt på annandagens morgon år 2012 vaknar de jullediga svenskarna till en ny värld. Ett strömlöst, mörkt och iskallt Sverige. En dag då allting förändras."''[[note]]Early morning on Boxing Day 2012, Swedes awaken after Christmas to a new world. A savage, dark and icy Sweden. A day when everything changed.[[/note]]

''Midvintermörker'' (''Midwinter Darkness'') is the first novel written by the Swedish blogger and author Lars Wilderäng. It follows several characters as UsefulNotes/{{Sweden}} is attacked by a foreign power. It is essentially a military thriller, filled with battles, borderline political satire and ''a lot'' of military terms and technology. Considered to be a warning text about the [[UsefulNotes/SwedesWithCoolPlanes decline of the Swedish armed forces]].

!! Tropes used include:
* AnAsskickingChristmas: The Russians invade on boxing day.
* ArtisticLicense: Averted. The author has been doing his research. ''Especially'' and annoyingly so in the radio traffic.
%% * AttackAttackAttack: The Final attack on [[spoiler:Slite]].
%% * ActionGirl: Several.
%% ** Mia, Swedish police officer. Aside from the first few pages, the book is one big action movie for her.
%% ** Elin is another good example; having been raised as the son the father never had.
* ActionPolitician: Two Russian Commandos, one wielding an AK-74 and the other a Dragunov sniper rifle, attempt to enter the home of the Swedish deputy prime minister and kidnap her. She takes out both of them with her [[ShotgunsAreJustBetter double-barrelled rabbit gun.]]
%% * AchillesHeel: [[spoiler:The Russian ship carrying their main force]]
%% * AcePilot: Kapten Sven Borg. [[spoiler:Nine confirmed kills, and he lives to tell the tale.]]
* AnyoneCanDie: One chapter is called [[spoiler:"Die Die Die"]] for a very good reason.
%% * BigBad: [[spoiler: The Russians]].
* BigDamnHeroes The author seems very fond of this trope.
** JAS 39 Gripens arrive like the riders of Rohan [[spoiler:when Russian helicopters attack ground forces.]]
** During an intense battle with Russian infantry, the Marines hear the sound of tanks. [[spoiler:They are Swedish and end the battle decisively for the Swedes]]
%% ** [[spoiler:Elin]]. Enough said.
* BigBulkyBomb: The Father of All Bombs are deployed twice with horrifying results.
* BlackDudeDiesFirst: An entire chapter is spent introducing Yusuf, a Syrian cab driver. He dies at the end of it, when the Russians launch a cruise missile strike on Stockholm.
%% * CoolBoat: Stridsbåt 90
%% * ColdSniper: [[spoiler:Our only look at the Russians perspective]]
* CurbStompBattle: While the [[spoiler:Swedes]] are given a small chance, and a desperate plan - the outcome is really not in doubt, [[spoiler: despite the fact that the Swedish tactical objective is accomplished]].
* JackBauerInterrogationTechnique:
** A subordinate reports having interrogated a prisoner and claims to only have used the much despised ''[[FateWorsethanDeath basic values manual]]''.
** Both sides also end up using [[spoiler:waterboarding against prisoners.]]
%% * DeathfromAbove: The Su-25 Frogfoot and JAS 39 Gripen both get their turns at this.
%% * HollywoodTactics: Averted.
%% * FalseFlagOperation: [[spoiler:The assault on Visby Airport.]]
%% * OldSchoolDogfight: [[spoiler:Sven Borg]] enters one near the end, shooting down several enemy aircraft.
* TakingYouWithMe [[spoiler:A Swedish Naval Officer is held on the Russian flagship and tortured by the Captain. When the ship is destroyed, he grabs the Captain and make sure both drown.]]
%% * WarIsHell
* YouAreInCommandNow: Several.
** The [[spoiler:Vice Prime Minister Gerd Olsson]] is promoted as the [[spoiler:Prime Minister is killed]].
** During the battle of Gotland, [[spoiler:Erik Segerfält is promoted as his superior officer is killed]].
