The timeline starts with the colonization of a more livable Antarctica by a small group of swept-away prehistoric humans from Australia, and follows the development of society and technology on the southernmost continent. Another tenet of the Zhu religion is that, while the afterlife isn't any better, a good Zhu can hope for the opportunity to be reunited with their ancestors and join in what's essentially an armed insurrection in hell.

The story by Poe featured the "Tsalal", black-skinned, black-toothed evil natives living near the South Pole. The author has acknowledged this series was InspiredBy them.

Including those by Creator/HPLovecraft : The ''[[Franchise/CthulhuMythos Plateau of Leng]]'', complete with weird landscape, architecture and really disturbing inhabitants. That, and [[RichardNixonTheUsedCarSalesman Lovecraft himself is a journalist]] in this AlternateHistory, who travels to Antarctica to study all the weird and creepy native civilizations (and get some ideas for his short stories, presumably). Another Lovecraft shout out is the name of the city of Tcho-Tcho, named after his race of cannibalistic Mythos-worshipers. Some others are the Gugs, a species of gorilla-sized rapist monkeys, and the Shantak, a [[GiantFlyer gigantic, acid-spitting bird of prey]]. There's also mention of an astropothere species with a "face full of tentacles".
