* RageAgainstTheMentor: Matt and Nathan spend much of the second Volume interrogating and browbeating (and [[MindRape Mind Raping]]) each other's and their own parents for answers. Answers about their origins and JerkAss activities: the creation of the [[TheMenInBlack Men in Black]]-like Company, their controlling their children, never helping with their abilities, and basically being dicks "for their sakes", and committing KarmaMeter -reducing sins "for them". All while never being clear or concise on what they had in mind or ''why'' they did these things. Needless to say, fans are exasperated at all this holding out too. All together now: Oh, KudzuPlot, ''we hate you!''
* RealityIsUnrealistic: Fan complaints that Claire breaking her neck when a football player accidentally tackled her indicates that she's MadeOfPlasticine. In reality, tackling results in crippling injuries on a disturbingly frequent basis, especially when the person being tackled isn't wearing proper safety equipment.
* ReallyDeadMontage: [[spoiler: Sylar]] gets one in the graphic novel following the Volume 4 finale. Not to mention the final scene of Volume 4 itself, with all of the heroes coming together for the first time ever in the show specifically just to watch him burn.
** [[spoiler: But this is Sylar we're talking about, so he's not dead, he's hiding. In Nathan.]]
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech:
** Seems to have become Sylar's signature move in Season 3 (Volume 3 & 4), as he often delivers one to each of his victims before killing them. Apparently, this is a function of his original power (understanding how things and people work) combined with one of his acquired powers (learning the history of people and objects through touch).
** Also Adam Monroe caps off the final episode of Season 2 with a magnificent diatribe against humanity's petty nature, successfully arguing in the process that Hiro Nakamura, the man who has come to stop him, effectively turned him into the man he is today.
* RedOniBlueOni:
** Nathan takes the role of the AloofBigBrother while Peter is the younger, emotional, and, unfortunately for many, an IdiotHero. Also, Peter and Sylar, according to how their powers work (Peter's is empathy, Sylar's is intuitive aptitude). However, in Season 3, [[spoiler:Peter absorbs Sylar's ability, making him have the ''hunger'', and Sylar has had Peter's ability all along]]. Also deconstructed in a future episode, where Peter summons fire while Sylar summons ice. It makes even more sense since [[spoiler:Peter and Sylar are revealed to be brothers.]] Except [[spoiler: it's later revealed that was [[AssPull just a lie]] and they are, in fact, not brothers]].
** Also, if you compare the heroes with their future selves, who are all apparently ''badass''. [[spoiler:It's inverted in the case of ''Sylar'', where he moved into Claire's home, calls himself Gabriel (his real name) and is much nicer than his present self. He even has a ''son'' named ''Noah''.]]
** Inverted in the case of the siblings [[spoiler:Meredith and Flint]]. Meredith has the red fire, but she is much calmer and more level-headed than her younger brother, who's about as bright as a flea but has the blue fire. However, since Meredith is on the side of good, she possesses a genuinely warm (pardon the joke) and caring personality for her family while her brother is ruthless and even killed a woman with his powers.
** Also, in an early first-season episode, Mohinder and Sylar are speaking about Mohinder's father (who was actually murdered by Sylar, unknown to Mohinder). At first, both are lit by a blue-green light, but when the murder comes up, Sylar turns away from Mohinder and smirks, and his face is lit in a red light. Mohinder's still in the blue light.
* RedemptionEqualsDeath:
** Ted calms down and finally gets off his revenge kick, just in time to be [[strike:snacked on]] slain by Sylar. And later [[spoiler: Maury Parkman]] gets swiftly executed for defending his son.
** Also, [[spoiler: Nathan Petrelli in the Volume 4 finale, during a "face" portion of his FaceHeelRevolvingDoor.]] Fandom was NOT amused.
** Volume 5: Redemption takes this as literally as possible. Victim #1: [[spoiler: "Nathan", who attempts to atone for a Ted Kennedy-esque incident from his past where he accidentally caused the death of a young woman, which only results in him being murdered by the young woman's mother... which also incidentally pops open the lid on the [[SealedInsideAPersonShapedCan Person Shaped Can]] that was keeping Sylar sealed away. Nice going there.]]
** Interestingly averted with [[spoiler: Sylar]], where it may actually work out.
* RedemptionInTheRain / HappyRain: "Into Asylum." Angela and Peter in one scene, Sylar in another.
* ReedRichardsIsUseless: Name a character. Literally any character.
** Sylar deserves special mention , because it seems like his first "superpower" (his ability to intuitively understand how things fit together) would allow him to, among other things, make a killing in business and on the stock market.
*** Sylar's example is justified in-story by his power coming with [[spoiler:an OCD-like compulsion to disassemble things in order to understand them ("disassembling" other people with powers to see how their powers work is why he's a serial killer in the first place)]], which makes holding down a real job for more than a few days more or less impossible.
** Every person with a time power (not even time travel, just things like 'painting the future' count) is a much straighter example, as they're constantly demonstrating the ability to solve all sorts of issues and then just... kinda don't.
** AvertedTrope with Hiro's father Kaito, whose ability as revealed in a deleted scene was probability computation, which he used to give himself an edge on the stock market.
* ReluctantMadScientist: Mohinder Suresh in the first two seasons, particularly the "Five Years Gone" episode.
* RepetitiveName: Peter Petrelli and Gabriel Gray. It's no coincidence that the main hero and main villain of the show have repetitive names.
* ReplacementGoldfish: [[spoiler:Mind-wiped Sylar becomes one for Nathan.]]
** Volume 5's main plot involves Samuel Sullivan screwing with the Heroes in order to find which one is a suitable ReplacementGoldfish for his dead brother Joseph. He seems to finally settle on ''Sylar'', but [[EvilIsNotAToy it doesn't end well...]]
* {{Retcon}}: In Volume One, Chandra Suresh's theory about the existence of "specials" is just that: a theory. He has no firsthand experience with metahumans and he is as giddy as a schoolboy to discover Sylar. Fast-forward to Volume Four, in which we are informed that [[spoiler:he was the chief medical officer at Coyote Sands, a concentration camp for metahumans built in the American Southwest in the early 1960s]].
*** [[spoiler:Perhaps the company Haitianed him at some point and he is rediscovering the specials]].
** Sylar's reasons for being a a serial killer, according to various volumes: Complexes thanks to his (adoptive) mother, being a victim to his own power, being manipulated by the Company, having a VillainousLineage, having lost himself because of his many powers (Claire's theory)...
* RetGone: Daniella Parkman and Noah Gray. Averted in the final episode: [[spoiler: Hiro's sweetheart Charlie was sent back in time, and is now a dying octogenarian with seven grandchildren. So much for Hiro's romantic happy ending. Being a True Hero sucks sometimes.]]
* TheReveal: Warning, SPOILERS ahead. Swipe at your own risk.
** Volume 1:
*** "In His Own Image": [[spoiler: Two from the end of the episode: the Man with Horn-Rimmed Glasses is Claire's father, and Nathan (not Peter) can fly!]]
*** "Better Halves": [[spoiler: We have to wait all episode to learn that D.L.'s power is walking through walls. And Eden works for Bennet!]]
*** "Six Months Ago": [[spoiler: Sylar's a cute nerdy guy with crazy eyebrows!]]
*** "Fallout": [[spoiler: The Haitian can talk!]]
*** "The Fix": [[spoiler: The man behind Hiro and Ando's kidnapping is Hiro's father.]]
*** "Distractions": [[spoiler: Nathan is Claire's birth father!]]
*** "Parasite": [[spoiler: Mohinder's not ''quite'' as dumb as he looks. And Mr. Linderman knows all about you, your brother, your daughter, and the bomb.]]
*** [[spoiler: "I'm your grandmother." Interestingly, the revelation here is not that Mama Petrelli is Claire's grandmother, but that she ''knows'' she's Claire's grandmother.]]
*** [[spoiler: Speaking of Mama Petrelli, she gets a couple more this season.]] In ".07%" [[spoiler:she reveals that she knows all about her sons' superpowers.]] And in "Landslide" [[spoiler:we learn that she knows all about the bomb -- and is totally on board with it!]]
*** "Five Years Gone": [[spoiler: President Nathan is Sylar!]]
*** "The Hard Part": [[spoiler: Bennet's tracking system is Molly Walker.]]
*** "How to Stop an Exploding Man": [[spoiler:"Call me Noah."]]
*** And throughout the season... [[spoiler: The bomb is Peter! No, it's Ted! No! Sylar! No, wait.... It's Peter.]]
* RevealingHug: HRG (Noah Bennet) has done it to members of his family more than once, and it happens with the Petrellis fairly often too. Even Sylar has done it at least once.
* RightHandHottie: The Haitian, to Noah Bennet. Played by former Hugo Boss model Jimmy Jean-Louis, no less.
* RippleEffectProofMemory
* RivalTurnedEvil: [[spoiler:Takezo Kensei/Adam Monroe.]]
* RoomFullOfCrazy: Sylar's closet. Also Future!Hiro and Future!Peter's [[strike:string collection]] timelines. And Mohinder's room full of cocoons.
* RuleOfScary: Volume One Sylar. Later on... not quite as much.
** Though in Volume 4 he managed to be properly terrifying, stalking around, on the edge of a nervous break down and giving up unpleaseant "Bad touch" vibes around Claire.
* RunningGag: [[spoiler:Killing Nathan]] in each SeasonFinale.
** Hugs always seem to turn disastrous for Peter. Peter finally turns the tables in one Volume 4 episode where he hugs Nathan, secretly absorbing the latter's flying ability, to make a quick and badass escape when Nathan tries to capture him.
** Hiro knows Nathan's name and how he feels about revealing his powers, but still insists on punching his fists in the air and shouting [[InSeriesNickname "FLYING-MAN!!!"]] every time he sees him.
* SadisticChoice: Sylar presents a number of these to Claire and Bennet in the Volume Three finale. They each opt to TakeAThirdOption.
** Doyle does this to Claire as well when he holds her, Sandra, and Meredith hostage and makes them play RussianRoulette. Luckily, the one that gets shot is invincible Claire, whose 'death' lets her knock him out.
* {{Salaryman}}: Hiro Nakamura, and -- even more so in Volume Two -- Ando, who was stuck back in his cubicle as Hiro has wacky adventures traveling through time...
* SarcasticConfession: In the series premiere, Sandra Bennet asks her daughter what she did that day. Claire replies, with complete truthfulness, [[HealingFactor "I walked through fire and didn't get burned."]] Sandra assumes she is being metaphorical and praises her for being "profound".
* SatelliteLoveInterest: Occurs in both WillTheyOrWontThey-type scenarios and established relationships: {{Love Interest}}s frequently have no interaction with the plot (sometimes despite seemingly pressing motives to get involved) or other characters aside from whoever's LoveInterest they are. Let's see, Simone, Janice, Mira, Heidi, Caitlin, West, Yaeko, Gretchen, Kimiko... in a few cases, if the LoveInterest existed entirely inside their partner's head, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. And when characters with their own semi-developed storylines and personalities manage to get paired up, there's a tendency for the woman to be DemotedToSatelliteLoveInterest, then [[TemporaryLoveInterest written off]]. (But, at least, Maya's decision to just exit the plot entirely and move out of town is, refreshingly, about the wisest choice anyone ever makes on the show.)
* ScaryBlackMan:
** {{Subverted}} with the Haitian. He is actually a fairly decent guy...it's just that he has the bad tendency of taking orders from all the wrong people.
** Volume Three introduced us to Benjamin "Knox" Washington, a black man who derives superhuman strength from people's fear. While technically he himself doesn't have to have caused that fear, it sure looks that way in most of the scenes he has appeared in.
** Later, we are introduced to the Haitian's brother, who is quite possibly the scariest black guy yet to be seen on the show. Although his power is invulnerability, it is off for most of his appearance. Just to give you an idea of how scary he is.
** Also subverted with DL Hawkins. His white, blonde wife Niki first describes him to the police as a terrifying, unstoppable felon who's committed a string of brutal murders. When DL actually shows up, he turns out to be a devoted, cuddly father who was actually ''framed'' for the killings -- by his frail-looking white wife, no less, whose psychopathic, super-strong alter ego actually committed them.
** We also have a scary black man in the GN's in the shape of Marcus. He may not LOOK scary but he's a warped as hell serial killer who takes great joy in bending and breaking people's bodies.
* ScreamsLikeALittleGirl: In "Into Asylum", [[MasterOfDisguise Fake!Sylar]] is about to be killed by the real one. Cue Zachary Quinto's high-pitched squeaky screaming, and the Internet busting a collective gut. Seen again in "Pass/Fail," when [[spoiler: Claire sticks a pen in his eye]], with similar audience reaction.
** To be fair, it is to show that Sylar, without his menace, is still the gawky Gabriel Gray underneath.
* SealedEvilInACan: Volume Two's BigBad, [[spoiler: Takezo Kensei aka Adam Monroe]]. [[spoiler: Volume Three went this way too with Level 5. And Adam. Again. For two episodes.]]
** [[spoiler: Mind-wiped Sylar. How long do you REALLY expect that to last?]]
* SealedInsideAPersonShapedCan: [[spoiler: Sylar again. Although the twist is that the "can" seems to be ''Matt'', rather than "Nathan".]]
* SecondEpisodeIntroduction: Matt doesn't appear until the second episode. (He did appear in the show's original pilot episode, which was longer than Episode 1 alone but shorter than Episodes 1 and 2.)
* SeekingSanctuary: Angela and Peter in "Into Asylum."
* SeenItAll: Claude.
* SelfDeprecation: Consider Noah's following comment about the events of ''An Invisible Thread''; was it an apology by the writers for the utter absurdity that was the volume 4 finale?
-->'''Noah''': I'm sorry about the Sylar thing. We all admit it was a terrible idea.
* SelfDuplication: Eli, a carny from season 4 who could only be defeated if you took out the "true" him and whose clones were not real equals.
** The tie-in comics featured another of these as an enemy to Adam Monroe.
* [[SelfFulfillingProphecy Self-Fulfilling Prophecy]]: Pretty much everything Peter does in Season 1 leads him ''closer to'', rather than further away from, becoming a nuclear bomb and blowing up New York.
* SelfMadeOrphan: Sylar kills his [[spoiler:adoptive]] mother and later [[spoiler:finishes Arthur Petrelli as Peter was unable to do so.]]
* SequelSeries: ''Series/HeroesReborn'' launched in 2015 but lasted only 13 episodes.
* SetRightWhatOnceWentWrong: Or ''will'' go wrong, as it were.
** Hiro uses this exact phrase and then some in his mental trial of himself. It might have worked... if David Anders hadn't called him out on simply "...saying the opening to Quantum Leap!".
* ShadowArchetype: The Volume Two episode "Cautionary Tales" pretty much states outright that Elle is what would have happened to Claire had Mr. Bennet not hidden her powers from the Company. WordOfGod is that they were originally meant to be ''sisters'', further highlighting the parallels.
** Also, Peter and Sylar. Both capable of PowerCopy, but one kills to do it and the other tries to save people. And in Volume Three, they're told that they're brothers (but it turns out to be a lie). The Powers That Be also briefly mixed up who's the "shadow", with Sylar attempting to go straight and Peter gaining his [[WithGreatPowerComesGreatInsanity Great Power And Great Insanity]]. And then abandoned that plotline.
** Danko is very clearly HRG's [[EvilCounterpart dark counterpart]], a stark illustration of what Bennett would become without Claire and his family. While HRG may occasionally toe the Moral Event Horizon line, Danko gleefully leaps over it
* ShaggyDogStory: The whole [[SaveThisPersonSaveTheWorld "Save the cheerleader, save the world"]] thing was based on Future Hiro's faulty information about what caused the nuclear explosion in New York. Since [[spoiler: Sylar wasn't the direct cause of the explosion]], preventing Sylar from absorbing Claire's ability wasn't actually necessary to stopping it.
** On the other hand, an invincible Sylar would have been better able to capitalise on the tragedy, creating the kind of BadFuture seen in "Five Years Gone". And it's implied that Claire's presence in New York and her interaction with Nathan contribute to [[spoiler: Nathan's last-minute HeelFaceTurn]]. So it's perfectly possible that saving the cheerleader ''did'' save the world -- just [[RightForTheWrongReasons not for the reasons Future Hiro thought]].
** Volume Three seemed like a Shaggy Dog Kennel, specifically where Peter and Sylar are concerned (and ESPECIALLY the latter's ludicrous redemption arc). Tell me, Peter absorbing Sylar's power was supposed to save the world HOW? Not that it matters, since Peter was completely depowered shortly afterwards.
* ShapeshiftingSeducer: Candice, and later a "special" being hunted by Danko and Sylar.
* ShapeshiftingSquick: Why are we so surprised that [[spoiler:Sylar]] would immediately use his newly acquired [[MasterOfDisguise "Turn Into Anyone You've Met"]] powers to ''deeply'' [[MindScrew freak people out]]?
* ShapeShifterSwanSong: Happens during [[spoiler: Sylar's ultimate defeat in the Volume 4 finale, when he involuntarily undergoes a shapeshifting spasm through all his previous forms after Peter uses his own copied shapeshifter power to defeat Sylar]].
* SharedUniverse: With ''Series/LasVegas'' (because of the Montecito) and therefore with ''Series/CrossingJordan'' as well (due to those two shows having a CrossOver as well being both shows being created by Tim Kring), and with the 2008 revival of ''Series/KnightRider'' (which also featured the Montecito). Although see ShoutOut below...
* ShipSinking: Volume Three crushed Matt/[[strike:Mohinder]] Audrey shippers with a forced romance between Matt and [[spoiler:new character Daphne Millbrook]], and Sylar/Elle shippers [[spoiler:could not have been happy when Sylar killed Elle.]]
* ShipperOnDeck: Unlikely as it seems, in "Pass/Fail", [[spoiler:'''Sylar'''. For '''Claire''' and '''Gretchen'''. "Subtext" indeed.]]
* ShirtlessScene: Most of the main male cast members, with Sylar getting the most shirtless scenes for the flimsiest reasons.
* ShoutOut: ''Lots''. Most are to comics, including specific title and issue references. Website/TelevisionWithoutPity have commented that some lines and scenes seems like shoutouts to ''them''.
** Although Hiro correctly cites Kitty Pryde in ComicBook/DaysOfFuturePast from the ComicBook/XMen comic book, he is a couple of issue numbers off.
*** When he meets Charlie the waitress with an EideticMemory, he discusses the same storyline, and she corrects the issue number for him.
** Watch the scene where [[spoiler:Hiro incapacitates Adam Monroe.]] Then read/watch the scene in ''Manga/{{Naruto}}'' where [[spoiler:Shikamaru incapacitates Hidan.]] Really, you only need to see one or the other. They're almost exactly the same scene.
** Mr. Claremont, the swordsmith from Episode 22, Landslide, is named for Creator/ChrisClaremont, who wrote one of the most successful arcs of the comic book X-Men.
** The license plate on the limousine belonging to Kaito Nakamura is '''NCC-1701''', the call sign for the original Enterprise starship from ''Series/{{Star Trek|The Original Series}}''. It's probably worth mentioning that Kaito Nakamura is played by Creator/GeorgeTakei, the actor who played Hikaru Sulu.
*** Similarly, the catalogue number for Kensei's katana in the private collection is CRM-114, the cipher for plane communications in Film/DoctorStrangelove
** And when Claude first appears, he says "Fantastic!", which was Creator/ChristopherEccleston's [[Series/DoctorWho Ninth Doctor's]] CatchPhrase. It should also be noted that ''Series/DoctorWho'' is Britain's equivalent of ''Franchise/StarTrek''.
** It's also no accident that the climax of the first Volume winds up taking place at Kirby Plaza (as in, famed comic artist Creator/JackKirby.)
*** And VideoGame/{{Kirby}} is also the name of a video game character that devours his enemies and copies their abilities. Sound familiar?
** The name Takezo Kensei is a ShoutOut to historical Japanese swordsman UsefulNotes/MiyamotoMusashi, aka Shinmen Takezo (or Takezo Shinmen in the western order).
** Simone may be named after comics writer Creator/GailSimone.
** Best of all, the bits in the Volume Three premier that suggest the writers are aware of ''us''! For example, Claire asks "[[WhatKindOfLamePowerIsHeartAnyway What Kind Of Lame Power is Healing Anyway?]]"
** Hiro has now shouted "[[Manga/JoJosBizarreAdventure MUDAMUDAMUDA!]]" twice. First while fighting samurai in [="Lizards"=] (S2, E2), then while teleporting around Daphne the speedster thief in [="The Butterfly Effect"=] (S3, E2).
*** Not to mention his constant exclamations of "[[Franchise/StreetFighter YATTA!!!]]"
** Sylar's original use of his power to [[ComicBook/{{Watchmen}} fix watches]].
*** Not to mention that the big plan in Volume One is to [[spoiler:destroy New York to unite the world]]...
** Hiro, [[spoiler:after getting mindwiped]], is in shock at then-recent Creator/MarvelComics plots: "ComicBook/CaptainAmerica is dead!? ComicBook/SpiderMan [[ComicBook/CivilWar2006 revealed his secret identity]]!? And the [[ComicBook/TheIncredibleHulk Hulk]] is [[ComicBook/Hulk2008 RED]]!?"
** Apparently, Ando is now capable of using the [[Manga/DragonBallZ Kamehameha]].
** The Volume 4 episode "Into Asylum" has one to ''Film/{{Se7en}}''. What's in the box? [[spoiler:A severed head.]]
** [[MindOverMatter Telekinetic]] BigBad [[LukeIAmYourFather Sylar is searching for his father]] with a semi-apprentice figure with daddy issues... called ''[[Franchise/StarWars Luke]]''.
** Everyone loves Waffles... just like on that [[Series/DeadLikeMe other show]] Creator/BryanFuller worked on.
*** There once was this... ''frog'' who lived with her mother and father and brother and Mr. Muggles...
** As a child a person with powers is trapped in a "Relocation" camp full of people who are different. They survive but their family and countless others are killed by their captors in a mass wipe out. They go on to help form a group of people with abilities to protect their own kind against humanity by any means necessary. Sound like Magneto's origin? Well it's also Angela Petrelli's as per "1961".
** The Film/{{Psycho}} [[{{Pun}} way]] Sylar deals with his mommy issues.
** ''[[VideoGame/{{Portal}} "...cake?"]]''
*** The cake is a LIE!
*** [[{{Pun}} The cake made them DIE]].
** ''[[Film/TheMatrix Bennet: (freaking out Mohinder) I'm sure there's a lot of Sureshs where you're from. It's like Smith... or Anderson.]]''
*** [[BadassLongcoat Also the "5 Years Gone" wardrobe.]]
** Also, one MacGuffin is a [[Franchise/PiratesOfTheCaribbean compass that doesn't point north.]]
** [[Music/PearlJam A troubled teen named Jeremy and "we could have saved him."]]
** [[Manga/DeathNote There's a kid with the power to kill people... and then there's Parkman's apple-eating invisible friend...]]
** [[Creator/MarxBrothers Lydia the tattooed lady]] has eyes you'll adore so and [[ToplessnessFromTheBack a torso even more so]].
** [[VideoGame/ChronoTrigger "She's the Marle to my Chrono!"]]
** Mohinder watches [[Series/{{Lost}} a grainy film with lots of cuts in it that gives cryptic clues about a secret scientific society where everyone involved was killed]]. It might as well just be called the Orientation film for Coyote Sands, really.
** Creator/ClaudeRains is [[Film/TheInvisibleMan1933 The Invisible Man]].
** Hiro ''Nakamura'' might have been named after Hiro ''Okamura'', the Japanese Toyman, most recently seen in ''WesternAnimation/SupermanBatmanPublicEnemies''. Both are {{Ascended Fanboy}}s who ''want'' to be heroes, as opposed to most people in Nakamura's mileu, who can't seem to do anything but complain about it.
** Hiro's sister calls his and Ando's Dial-a-Hero service [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heroes_For_Hire Heroes For Hire]]
** "Objection, your honour! He's reciting the opening to Series/QuantumLeap!"
** [[Film/RainMan Hiro and Ando in Vegas, descending an escalator in expensive suits they won by using Hiro's superpowers to gamble.]]
** It's been noted that Gabriel Gray looks eerily like [[Franchise/{{Superman}} Clark Kent]] and his watch shop has a crystal shaped like the Fortress of Solitude.
** Not only do we get a children's choir singing the theme from ''Series/TheGreatestAmericanHero'', but William Katt, Ralph Hinkley himself, plays one of Tracy's victims. Believe it or not.
** When Gretchen encourages Claire to investigate her roommate's "suicide" by using the "jump, push, fall" method, she says she saw it on an episode of ''Series/CrossingJordan'' (Tim Kring's previous series -- and both shows have episodes called... you guessed it).
** Mr. Linderman's casino is [[Series/LasVegas the Montecito]].
** When he sees Isaac's painting of him fighting a dinosaur, Hiro's first response is, [[Literature/ASoundOfThunder "What if I step on a bug? I could change history..."]]
** Can it be a coincidence when the woman who played [[Series/LawAndOrder Serena Southerlyn]] is taking pains to deny that she is "shoving my liberal agenda down your throat"?
** The character Lauren [[Series/GilmoreGirls Gilmore]] delivers the somewhat Lorelai-ish "I'm thankful for canned yams." line during a Thanksgiving dinner. Who plays Lorelai again? Ah, Lauren Graham.
* ShroudedInMyth: Both Mr. Bennet and Sylar seem to have something of a legendary reputation amongst the superpowered community; Bennet as the guy who comes when superpeople misbehave to kick their ass, and Sylar as the unstoppable power thief who hunts you down and steals your brain.
* ShutUpHannibal
-->'''Sylar:''' From cheerleader to stone-cold killer! Who's the monster now?
-->''[Ka-chuck. BANG! Busy signal.]''
-->'''Claire:''' You are.
* SigilSpam: The logo of The Company is either SigilSpam or a RunningGag.
--> Given that it is visible in the Suresh's DNA program, which would make it way older than any possible conspiracy, it's more of a RunningGag.
* SignatureSoundEffect: Sylar has his clock ticking whenever he is being particularly evil, and in Volume Three, Mohinder's more...erm...interesting actions are accompanied by the sound of June Bugs.
** Other good examples are the distinct sounds made by different abilities. Apparently, the Haitian's ability sound was given the name "Haitian Grab" by the production team.
** The consistent ability sound effects are sometimes useful to clarify things with all the PowerCopying shenanigans and such. For instance, when Peter has Mohinder's ability at the beginning of Volume 5 without an explanation until several scenes later, despite the fact he's using it for LeParkour which Mohinder never did, you can still tell he's borrowing Mohinder's ability because it still makes the same loud whooshy noise when he jumps.
* SittingOnTheRoof: Peter in the early episodes. Also the roof of the Deveaux building is a popular meeting place.
** "The Deveaux Building? Really? Everyone and their mother goes there! Literally!"
* SlippingAMickey: "Cold Wars" has Bennet unknowingly ingesting a roofied drink and he's hauled back to a hotel room by Peter, Mohinder, and Matt to be interrogated. Especially ironic when Bennet does the same thing to Parkman in the first season. Mohinder pulls this on Sylar in the first season as well.
* SlowElectricity: In "Dual", when the lights go off in the Primatech medical facility's hallway. Possibly justifiable in that maybe [[spoiler:Sylar did it that way on purpose]].
* TheSlowPath: In Season 1, Hiro meets a diner waitress with super memory on the day she is murdered by Sylar. He travels back in time 6 months and lives with her for the interim, falling in love along the way. Conveniently, this is how he learns English.
* SnowMeansCold: Alice Shaw makes it snow in the desert as a test of her weather-manipulation powers.
* SoundtrackDissonance: Sylar is sauntering down the street with a folder of Company files after acquiring Claire's ability when he's stopped by two Company agents. They shoot him and after he pulls the bullet out, he quickly disposes of the agents. He sends one flying to the ground and the other right in the windshield of the car, destroying [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKL8dENAAYk its dashboard camera]]. The entire scene is set to a perky Music/FatboySlim [=/=] BPA [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mtbfPmbxc0 cover]].
* SouthOfTheBorder: The Maya and Alejandro subplot in Volume 2, Nathan and his daughter, Claire's [[RunForTheBorder getaway flight]] to Mexico, wherein Nathan protects Claire from government agents once the free pass he had given her, granting her immunity, was revoked.
* SpecialEditionTitle: The show briefly indulges in this in Volume 3 with three episodes in a row:
** In the episode "Villains", the show's title is replaced with the episode's title, and the animation is different.
** In the following episode "It's Coming", [[spoiler:Elle shooting electricity at Sylar at full force]] during the teaser spills over into the title sequence: [[spoiler:the Earth flashes briefly as if Elle's blasts were visible from space before the show's title comes up]].
** And finally, in "The Eclipse, Part 1", the view of the titular eclipse directly transitions into the part of the opening with the show's title (the part with the Earth is not shown).
* SpikeShooter: Perrin Crocker from the comic books has this ability.
* SpotlightStealingSquad: It slowly became obvious that the main characters of the show would be the Petrelli family (and by extension Claire and Noah Bennet), and Sylar. This became more evident with Sylar as the show's DVD releases went from a shadowy depiction of his face to him standing in the middle of the cover.
* StalkerWithACrush: Invoked almost word-for-word with [[spoiler: Gretchen.]]
** Sylar, who has stalked Claire since the beginning of the series, started to show some attraction towards Claire, beginning with the Volume 4 finale, when he suggested, in the creepiest speech in the show's history, that they get married and live together for, literally, the rest of eternity.
* StalkingIsLove: West. Although he got better and maintains his prior friendship with Claire via Facebook (conveniently not requiring the actor to reappear).
** West is a pretty vanilla example of this trope. Samuel takes it up to eleven.
* TheStarscream: Sylar. Trying to recruit him as your [[TheDragon Dragon]] [[EvilIsNotAToy ''never'' ends well for you]].
* StaticStunGun: People get tazed by tazers a lot in this show. Maybe because all the actor has to do is squirm and shake after being poked by a prop with lights glued on it.
* StayingAlive: Sylar. So much so that they don't even bother explaining how he survived seemingly being perma-killed by Claire then left to burn in the Volume Three final showdown (after several episodes they finally throw in some jazz about "melting glass"). He's Sylar, for crying out loud. Of course he survived.
** And as of the Volume 4 finale not even attacking his weak point works anymore (he's ''moved'' it with his shapeshifting powers - yes, apparently he can ''shapeshift his brain''), eliciting a well-deserved OhCrap reaction from Danko.
* StayInTheKitchen: Ryan Hanover, the sexist and unpleasant Marine in "The Recruit" webisodes.
* StealthHiBye: Sylar.
* StepfordSmiler: Angela.
* StevenUlyssesPerhero: Hiro, again.
* StopTrick: Some of Hiro's teleports are achieved this way.
* StormingTheCastle: Matt and Bennet storming Primatech in the Season One finale.
** In Volume Four, Matt and Peter storm Building 26, armed only with the power to control minds.
* StoryArc
* StoryBreakerPower: Peter, Sylar and Hiro have these. [[spoiler:Fortunately the writers realised this and [[{{Nerf}} Nerfed]] Peter and Hiro in Volume 3. And those that are overpowered tend to [[ForgotICouldFly forget how insanely powerful they are at critical moments.]]]].
** Claire and Adam's healing abilities are nothing terribly special, right? Well, it turns out that their blood can be transfused to heal others, even raising people from the dead! Unsurprisingly, [[ForgotICouldFly Claire only ever mentions this ability again]] in the one instance where it ''won't'' work.
* TheStraightMan: Nathan in any scene he shares with Peter or Hiro.
* StrappedToAnOperatingTable: Bennet does this to Matt and later to Sylar at Primatech in Volume 1. [[spoiler: Mohinder does this to Nathan and Tracy and Arthur does this to Peter at Pinehearst in Volume 3.]]
* StringTheory: Both Mohinder's map of specials and Future Hiro's map of time.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: The Petrelli family all share strong features. Incidentally, Claire not only looks like her adoptive parents, but also shares some features with her biological parents.
* StupidSacrifice:
** [[spoiler:Nathan]] in the Season 1 finale. We all remember that Peter ''[[HealingFactor can't die]]'', right?
** [[spoiler:Nathan, again,]] taking on Sylar by himself in the Season 4 finale.
* SubwaysSuck: Subverted. Main/FutureBadass Hiro stops a subway train with his time manipulation powers.
* SuicideByCop: Matt attempts this in "Shadowboxing" because Sylar's mind has possessed his body and plans on wreaking a havoc spree and then pinning the blame on Parkman. So Matt uses his power to create a gun threat, prompting the police to corner him. They shoot Parkman, but his gambit is all for naught as he survives.
%%* SuperEmpowering: [[spoiler: Ando]]'s power.
%%* SuperFamilyTeam: The Petrellis... sometimes.
%%* SuperHumanTrafficking: The Company.
* SuperpowerfulGenetics:
** Superpowered parents have superpowered kids, though this is at least partly the result of a breeding program by The Company.
** Subverted with Niki, Tracy, and Barbara who are identical triplets with powers but got them artificially.
* SuperpowerMeltdown: Ted, Peter, [[spoiler:Gabriel/Sylar (in an alternative future)]].
** This is what ([[PutOnABus possibly]]) kills Meredith at the end of Volume Three.
* SuperpowerLottery: Sylar, Peter, Hiro, Eden, and [[strike:perhaps]] definitely Matt. Also [[spoiler:Arthur Petrelli and Alice Shaw.]]
* SuperSenses: Dale Smither from Volume One had super hearing.
* SuperSerum: the Volume Three MacGuffin.
* SuperSoldier: The Pinehearst Marines in Volume Three, most notably Scott and Rachel Mills.
* SuperhumanTransfusion: The effects of Claire and Adam's blood when donated.
** Of note: After Season 2, no more of these miraculous transfusions occur. One Season 4 episode acknowledges the history: Claire admits that giving Hiro her blood would only make his brain tumor grow faster. But several deaths occur later in the season (at least two in her presence), and she never thinks to try transfusing any of 'them'.
* SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome:
** Subverted. [[spoiler:The nigh-invulnerable Sylar is seemingly killed mid sentence when he is stabbed in his weak spot by a man he'd turned his back on. However, he gets back up and reveals that he used his new shapeshifting powers to ''move'' that weak spot somewhere else.]]
** Played straight during the eclipse, when all "specials" lose their power. Not only is Claire suddenly sick with a common disease (her immune system never had to fight germs before), but Sylar (a watch repairman) and Elle (a teenage girl) find themselves completely outclassed by HRG who has special training and a sniper rifle.
* SurvivedTheBeginning: Almost everyone who survived the first season became virtually immortal in season 2 and after. The characters introduced from the second season onward weren't that lucky.
* SuspiciouslySimilarSubstitute: The character of Lauren Gilmore, is suspected to be one as she bears a strong similarity to Tracy and replaces her as Noah's partner in Season 4, complete with a backstory retconned to fit in with Noah's character arc. (Though she's never revealed to have any powers, even though Primatech's "one of us, one of them" policy suggests she should be a Special.
* SwordFight: Hiro and his father, Hiro and Kensei (and, technically, Hiro and an imaginary version of Kensei).
* TakeYourTime: With some rather {{Squick}}y implications. Noah learns that the eclipse temporarily neutralizes powers. Seeing this as his chance to kill Sylar for good, he grabs a sniper rifle and sets up where, through the scope, he can see Sylar and Elle kissing, fully clothed. End episode. At the opening of the next episode, Sylar and Elle are post-coital in a sleeping bag, and Noah's still out there aiming...
* TakingYouWithMe: The first battle between Peter and Sylar ends with them grappling and throwing each other off a 30 ft drop off the bleachers. Peter died, but came back to life, Sylar slowed his fall with [[MindOverMatter TK]] and limped away.
* TangledFamilyTree: The Petrelli's immediate family thus far includes Angela and Arthur, [[spoiler:Angela's sister Alice,]] sons Peter and Nathan, Nathan's wife and sons, and Nathan's daughter, Claire (with Meredith). Claire, in turn, has the Bennets as her foster family, the Petrellis, as well as biological mother Meredith, making Meredith's brother Flint her uncle. Sylar [[spoiler: was teased for a bit as a [[LongLostSibling third Petrelli brother]]; [[FromACertainPointOfView this was a lie]] but he later became Nathan's ReplacementGoldfish.]]
* TapOnTheHead: Utilized fairly often in first three seasons. Hiro seems to be the {{Butt Monkey}} for this trope, averaging about two knockouts a volume. It's a wonder he doesn't have brain damage. [[spoiler: Oh, wait...]]
* TaxidermyIsCreepy: Sylar's biological father, Samson, turned to taxidermy to keep his hands busy after he stopped killing people.
* TaxidermyTerror: Sylar steals a rabbit from his father's trailer and leaves it in plain sight at Danko's apartment. Danko is understandably weirded out.
* TheTaxi: Mohinder's day job at the beginning of the series.
* TeamSpirit: A recurring theme in Season 1 is that the characters get a lot more accomplished when they work together. Played fairly subtly most of the time, but made very obvious in the finale, where only by the combined efforts of Peter, Matt, Niki, Hiro, Claire, and [[spoiler:Nathan]] is Sylar defeated and New York saved.
** Made explicit in Peter's conversations with Claude. Claude maintains that relationships are distractions, but Peter eventually concludes that it is only by letting other people in that he can fully realise his heroic potential.
** It's also worth noting that [[DividedWeFall any time the characters]] ''[[DividedWeFall don't]]'' [[DividedWeFall work together]], the results tend to be... [[NiceJobBreakingItHero not pretty]].
* TechnicolorFire: Flint's pyrokinetic fire burns blue because unlike [[spoiler: his sister]] he embraced his powers and practiced burning it REALLY hot. Peter's fire looks like this too since he mimicked it from Flint.
* TerribleTicking: The ticking clock sound effect that plays whenever Sylar's up to his old tricks evokes this trope. Even though it's not literally a ticking he can hear, it symbolizes that he can see how everything works in a way no one else can, which drives him batty.
* [[ChristmasSpecial Thanksgiving Special]]
* ThatManIsDead: Sylar pretty much refuses to answer to "Gabriel" most of the time, but goes back to it when he's repressing his "hunger".
** Subverted and made all the more intriguing by the fact that when he is Gabriel repressing the hunger, he takes the ''opposite'' stance, refusing to answer to Sylar. His little identity crisis is edging dangerously close to split personality disorder (now THAT would be awesome).
*** Makes one wonder what [[spoiler: "Nathan"]] will end up answering to.
*** [[spoiler:[[VideoGame/KnightsOfTheOldRepublic "I'm not Darth Sylar anymore. I'm X now."]]]]
* ThatsWhatIWouldDo: Nathan cites his belief that the government would capture and experiment on anybody with powers as exactly what he would do in the situation. [[spoiler:And then he does.]]
* ThemeMusicPowerUp: Sylar, Peter, and Spider-Mo
* ThereAreNoTherapists: ...and that one time there was a therapist, she only survived for half an episode.
** Averted with a police psychologist who tries to talk to Sylar. She manages to survive the episode due to the fact that he's been hit with amnesia and has no idea what's going on.
* ThereIsNoTry
* TheydCutYouUp: Seems to be the plot of Volume Four.
** This is why HRG keeps Claire's abilities a secret for most of Volume One. And he should know. After all, [[PunchclockVillain he supervises the cutting]].
* ThirdLineSomeWaiting
* ThirtySecondsOverTokyo
* ThisIsSomethingHesGotToDoHimself: Kirby Plaza, Peter to Niki: [[HonorBeforeReason Thanks, I've got this. Go back to your family.]]
* TieInNovel: ''Literature/SavingCharlie'', which expands on the episode "Six Months Ago" and the relationship between Hiro and Charlie.
* TimeTravel: Hiro Nakamura multiple times. Peter, too, for some [[StoryboardingTheApocalypse apocalypse storyboards]].
* TimeyWimeyBall: the "FantasticAesop" entry on a different page pretty much covers it
* TitleDrop: Ted Sprague in Volume 1: "If we can help ourselves, we could save others. We could be... heroes."
** If you count "hero", then there are ''lots''. Most of them ironic. A rare non-ironic example is said after Peter saves Claire from Sylar:
--->'''Claire:''' You're totally my hero.
** Of all people, Sylar does this in the series finale when Claire is about to reveal her ability to the world:
--->'''Peter:''' "What the hell does she think she's doing? She's going to change everything."\
'''Sylar:''' "That's right. It's a brave new world."
* TheTokyoFireball: [[BigApplesauce In New York in one timeline.]] Some prophetic paintings suggested one was up and coming for Washington D.C.
* TooDumbToLive: Claire edged dangerously close to this in Volume Two. She knows the kind of people looking for her family. She knows her flyboy has sworn a vendetta against her father. She's caught him spying on her ''at her house''. How certain are we that Sylar didn't steal her brain? However, the true champions of stupidity have got to be Maya and Alejandro, with Alejandro actually getting killed by Sylar and Maya trusting Sylar completely, even after she's found out that he was wanted in connection with his mother's murder. Also, Mohinder Suresh is an example of this most of the time, but ''especially'' in the Third Volume opener.
** Then there's Peter, who in the very first episode decides to test his theory of {{Flight}} by [[WhatCouldPossiblyGoWrong jumping off the roof of an apartment building]].
*** This was one part him having "faith" and at least two parts him being emo. He lives in his brother's shadow and is desperate to be special, so throwing himself off the roof is either a cry for help or a subconscious "better dead than ordinary" attitude.
** Nathan too from time to time.
* TooGoodForThisSinfulEarth: In Volume 3 Peter goes to the future and finds that Sylar is a waffle-making soccer dad with a four- or five-year-old son named Noah. As soon as you saw that sweet, innocent, and adorable kid, you knew he wouldn't make it to the end credits alive. Claire, Knox, and Daphne barge in, and Knox crushes Noah with furniture in a battle in Sylar's kitchen, after which Sylar literally [[AngstNuke explodes]].
* TookALevelInBadass:
** In the Dystopian future of the 1st season episode "Five Years Gone", Future Peter, Hiro, Matt, and Sylar have all taken ''multiple'' levels.
*** After having met future!Hiro, Ando even comments to present!Hiro that he "looked badass". [[AscendedFanboy Hiro rejoiced]].
** After spending Volume Two wallowing in her own pain, Claire spent Volume Three [[CuteBruiser kicking ass and generally being much more proactive]] in dealing with life's hard knocks.
** Matt seems to have taken at least half a level in Volume 4.
** [[spoiler:Micah apparently took one in Volume Three. In Volume Four, he's adopted the codename "Rebel" and is organizing a resistance effort against the government.]]
** Peter does this, twice. First, by actually getting a grasp on his powers after his training with Claude. Later, when his DEPOWERING followed by his new NERFED ability, he becomes one of the most strategically intelligent characters of the show.
* TookALevelInJerkass: One result of Peter's [[TrainingFromHell time with Claude]], if the end of "Unexpected" is anything to go by.
* TortureAlwaysWorks: Subverted. Noah captures Edgar and threatens to cut off his fingers for information on the Carnival and Claire. His CIA agent ally Lauren stops him and convinces him that torture doesn't work and that Edgar will give information more freely if they convince him that it's in his interests to help them. They eventually realize that Edgar was exiled by Samuel when he learned that Samuel killed Joseph. Noah gets the information he wants when he convinces Edgar that they can save the Carnival members from Samuel.
* ToplessnessFromTheBack: Lydia the carnie from Volume 5 has some sort of precognitive power that only works by displaying images of people important in the immediate future...on her back in Samuel's tattoo ink. She's topless in one scene to display the tattoos.
* TotalEclipseOfThePlot
* TrackingChip: The Company kidnaps evolved humans and injects them with tracking devices ("bagging and tagging").
** In the first episode of volume 4, Hiro implants Ando with a GPS tracker.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Hiro loves waffles. Everybody else seems to love blueberry pancakes. Sylar prefers pie.
* TragicHero: [[strike: Mystery Sock]] Isaac
* TrailersAlwaysSpoil: [[spoiler:Why put the last minute of the finale, featuring one Noah Bennet, in a finale promo trailer airing for weeks, if you are putting him in a situation that he could possibly die in a cliffhanger in the penultimate episode!?]]
* TrainingFromHell: Claude's training of Peter involved beating him with a stick and [[DieOrFly throwing him off of a skyscraper]]. Hiro trains Adam to be a Samurai by introducing him to the [[GoodThingYouCanHeal 90 Angry Ronin]]. Standard Company training is also done TheSpartanWay.
** Not to mention Meredit teaching Claire that regeneration isn't everything...
* TraumaCongaLine: Peter, ESPECIALLY in Volume 3.
* TricksterMentor: Again, Claude, whose training methods involve gleefully whacking his pupil repeatedly with a pole and throwing him off a building. Given the circumstances, it's often hard to tell whether Claude sincerely cares about his pupil or hates his guts.
* TryNotToDie: Bob to Mohinder in Volume Two
* TwinThreesomeFantasy: Referenced, along with ScrewYourself
* TwoLinesNoWaiting
* {{Tykebomb}}: Elle Bishop.
* UmbrellaOfTogetherness: Peter and Simone. Aww. Redone in the online comic to include [[HoYay Peter and Mohinder]] instead!
* UnableToCry: In S1, Mohinder remarks at some point on the fact that even though his father, whom he adored but had a troubled relationship with, died violently and he's very upset about all of it, he hasn't been able to cry. When he goes back to India for his father's funeral, he cries then, and seems to briefly act a little more even-keeled afterward.
* UncomfortableElevatorMoment: Sylar in Volume Three after [[spoiler: acquiring the ability to sense truth.]] Sylar is utterly casual in the elevator, as is his fellow passenger... albeit for different reasons given Sylar is drenched in blood.
** Another memorable one happened all the way back near the finale of Volume One, where Matt, Niki, HRG, and D.L all find themselves sharing an elevator (the last time Matt saw Niki, she was throwing him out a 10 story window... which she outright reminds him of just prior to getting into the elevator). Complete with cheesy muzak in the background.
* TheUnFavorite: A staple of Petrelli family dynamics. Also Mohinder was the unfavorite to his dead big sister.
* UnflinchingWalk: Volume 5 BigBad Samuel gets a totally badass one; after some corrupt cops brutally murder an evolved human, Samuel uses his earthbending ability to level the police station, then walks towards the camera as the station collapses behind him.
* UnderwaterKiss: Claire and Alex in a pool.
* UnexplainedRecovery: [[spoiler:Now that we know Linderman was a hallucination, FridgeLogic means that, for the time being, we must assume this is how Nathan recovered from being shot, twice. Then again, it worked for Matt and he got shot ''four times''. Sucks for D.L., I guess. Although, given sudden religious streak Nathan embarks on shortly after his death, there are certain implications that he was either miraculously saved or just got really, really lucky.]]
** Future!Peter kissed him on the forehead just before he revives, so it is always possible he had gained Hiro's mother's power at some point in the future, through judicious time travel.
** [[spoiler:It seems Nathan's luck has run out, as his character is KilledOffForReal (with his pseudo-personality residing for a while in a mind-blanked Sylar).]]
** Tracy Strauss had this after being frozen-shot by Danko in Volume 4: come Volume 5, she's a water-toting ice queen with a score to settle with Building 26's remaining occupants.
* UnkemptBeauty:
** Isaac Mendez -- in the DVDCommentary, Creator/JackColeman mentions it on a rare occasion Isaac is wearing an outfit ''without'' paint on it:
--->''"He looks good cleaned up. Of course, he looks good messy too! [[HaveIMentionedIAmHeterosexualToday I'm just saying, I'm just stating as an objective observer]]."''
** Mohinder is very pretty, has constant PermaStubble, and usually wears outfits that look mismatched and baggy. In a first-season scene which seems to have intended to emphasize the UnkemptBeauty thing, the morning after an all-nighter he's wearing a flimsy tanktop and gleaming with a delicate sheen of sweat. ([[GirlOfTheWeek Eden]] says he looks "like hell" nonetheless.)
* TheUnreveal: HRG's first name. Of course, eventually we find out that it's [[spoiler:Noah]].
-->'''Sandra Bennet''': It is so funny how all of y'all call him Mr. Bennet over there. I've always just known him as – ''(Sees Mr. Muggles chewing on Sylar's shoelaces.)'' Stop that, you!
** Happens a few times with [[TheGhost Linderman]] in Season 1. One of the characters is all set to meet with him - only to be confronted with a middle-man instead. Nathan eventually comes face to face with him in "Parasite".
* UnusuallyUninterestingSight: As one editor joked during one episode (and this is but the most spectacular example of many), "Wouldn't you know it? That's the second time in as many years the corpse of a cute blonde girl suddenly vanished off one of our operating tables!"
** Hiro teleports himself to New York City, and nobody around notices the man who appeared out of thin air.
** A truck driver who picks up a hitchhiking Hiro and Ando learns that the baby the two of them are carrying has the power to shut down machinery (i.e. the trucker's truck) when upset (which is pretty much all the time). His only reaction is to politely ask them to remove their "magic baby" from his truck so he can continue on his journey. It's especially notable that this polite nonreaction occurs in the middle of a plot arc about how normals would be so threatened by the existence of supers that they would commit mass genocide against them if they ever learned about them. There's either something very profound there, or it's just a funny piece of dissonance in a comic relief scene.
*** He most likely didn't know how to react to a "magic baby". And it was the government who were shown to be paranoid of Specials, not mankind as a whole. We've seen several ordinary people on the show happy to be around evolved humans without being threatened.
* UselessWithoutPowers: With her powers, Daphne can run at SuperSpeed. Without her powers, she is unable to walk unaided due to her cerebral palsy.
* UtopiaJustifiesTheMeans: This is basically the mantra of all of the show's {{Big Bad}}s.
