* The Grape family's relationship, in general. They're definitely a BigScrewedUpFamily, but despite their tiffs and differences, they look out for one another and clearly love each other deep down.
* Mentioning that, some children are implied to have been the reason Arnie climbed up the water tower as they took advantage of his disability to serve for their own selfish enjoyment ("Way to go, Arnie, do you think you could try that again for me?"), and Gilbert thankfully gets the little brats to buzz off by firmly telling them to leave his brother alone, especially when one of them rudely swats Arnie on the back of the head for a cheap laugh.
* Gilbert reconciling with his mother during Arnie's birthday party. Exemplified when he insists that Becky meet her (after previously rejecting Becky's inquisitions on the subject), showing that he no longer feels any shame or resentment in caring for his family.
** Becky's reaction to Momma apologizing for the way she looks is beautifully accepting and humanizing.
-->'''Momma''' (apologetic): I wasn't always like this.
-->'''Becky''': Well...I wasn't always like ''this.''
* Momma's tearful admission that she "never wanted to be a joke." Gilbert gets down on his knees and embraces her, whispering reassuringly, "You're no joke." [[SugarWiki/HeReallyCanAct You'd genuinely believe that this was a moment between a real son and mother that just happened to be filmed for a movie and not two actors]].
** As mentioned on the Trivia page, Johnny Depp felt awful about saying such cruel things about Cates's character and apologized to her behind the scenes. One imagines some of the genuine emotion of that apology filtered into this scene.
* Arnie and Gilbert reuniting at the birthday party, with Amy playing along in their "Have you seen Arnie?" game.
* In the bonus features of the DVD, Darlene Cates remembers how Creator/JohnnyDepp came up to her on set, shaken, to ask her forgiveness for having to say (in the movie) all these horrible things about her character's - and her - morbid obesity.
* Towards the end, Arnie's siblings ask him for his help in [[spoiler: removing the furniture from the house.]] They probably could have simply asked him to stay out of the way and given him a toy to play with, and he would have, but he's clearly happy to be included. And Gilbert trusts him enough to understand that they [[spoiler: want to burn down the house to protect Momma's dignity, and it's pretty clear that Arnie does understand.]]
