* How exactly do ageing and pregnancy work in these movies? Judging by Selene and the other vampire characters, once bitten a vampire does not age but in the prequel, Sonja is first seen as a child about Lucien's age. Did Viktor just wait until she grew up before turning her? Can all female vampires get pregnant or was Sonja just special somehow? And was Selene ever actually physically pregnant with Eve/Subject 2 or was Eve a test tube baby?
** When is it ever said that these vampires can't get pregnant? Not sure if it's said how Sonja came to be, but she makes no mention of a mother. So we could assume that Victor groomed her to be one day a vampire, possibly while raising her as his daughter. As for the pregnancy, maybe the fact that it was a werewolf's seed had something to do with it. Or vampires can get pregnant in this universe.
** I think its like they don't stop ageing per se more along the lines of it slows down dramatically, Viktor does say her mother gave her life to birth Sonja, either that or vampires age to a certain point then it slows down, but I think that's how it goes.
** While no longer Canon, the prequel novel ''Blood Enemy'' established that vampires could have children together, and "pure-bred" vampires were a higher caste than those that were turned. Kraven managed to become an exception by pretending to kill Lucien. Much of the book contradicts later canon, however. Lucian wasn't the first transforming Lycan, and all three elders were stated to be purebred vampires.
*** Vampires in ''Underworld'' are technically still alive (they are shown on several occasions to have heartbeats), therefore, there's no reason why they cannot procreate (in the sense that the bodily functions required for conception still appear to work). 'Pureblood' vampires like Sonja and David must stop aging at some point; Sonja was apparently supposed to be close to 200 years old in ''Rise of the Lycans'', but obviously didn't look it. In the novelisation of ''Rise of the Lycans'', it's mentioned that vampire births are quite rare. Therefore, it's possible for vampires to get pregnant/impregnate, it's just not very common. It's implied in ''Awakening'' and explicitly stated in ''Blood Wars'' that Selene and Michael conceived Eve naturally; Selene was in the early stages of pregnancy when she was captured and so didn't know she was pregnant yet. Presumably, Selene carried the pregnancy like normal, but whilst being kept in stasis by Antigen. It's also explicitly stated that David's parents were both vampires when he was conceived and that he was born a vampire, like Sonja. Werewolves and by extension Lycans seem perfectly capable of breeding with each other (though it's never made clear how Lucian came to be born; a popular theory is that his mother was already pregnant when she was turned into a Werewolf). As shown with Lucian and Sonja, and Selene and Michael, Lycans and vampires can conceive together, but it's probably even less common because of the whole 'vampire superiority' and 'Hybrids are abominations' debacle.
** Well the only pregnancies that we know of are whoever Sonja's mother was, Sonja herself, and Selene. Sonja's father was Viktor, an Elder, and they are more powerful and able to do things lesser vampires can't. Sonja as an Elder's daughter would likely have similar traits, and Lucien likewise was the first werewolf to be able to take on a human form, so there's bound to be powerful genes there. Selene doesn't get pregnant until after she's drunk from Alexander Corvinus and gains things like immunity to sunlight.
* The nature of blood-bourne disease that creates "immortals" is somewhat contradictory:
## Selene is exposed to Michael's lycanthropy-infested body fluids, but does not become a hybrid herself, yet when she drinks the blood of Alexander Corvinus, she becomes immune to sunlight.
** While she was splattered with the bodily fluids of slain Lycans, Selene never consumed their blood and she never had any open wounds exposed to spilt Lycan blood.
## William Corvinus attacked and killed numerous vampires with his claws and teeth, consuming their body fluids, but never becomes a hybrid.
** William could have eventually turned into a hybrid, much like his brother, but it is possible his starvation and captivity prevented the transformation from catalyzing inside of his body.
## Markus Corvinus seems to gain the memories of any creature whose blood he drinks, in any amount and in any situation, yet no other character does so. Lucian bites Michael and ''implants'' his memories, but the only other case of "transmitting" memories was when Selene awakened Victor.
** It's more than Markus. Selene explains that only elders have the ability to properly arrange their memories into a coherent history. It's what she was attempting to do when she awakened Viktor, with less than perfect results, and in general, it's implied to be the way the elders manage to maintain consistent rule, despite their two-hundred-year bouts of hibernation. Michael's fragmented memories from Lucian are more likely a side effect of being turned rather than anything to do with blood, as seems to be the case with vampires.
*** And as for the rest, we could probably mark it down to "the Corvinus bloodline is weird and not all of the rules apply" since Markus and William are the progenitors of vampires and werewolves, respectively, and Alexander, as their father, probably shares at least some of the traits.
*** The Cleaners William killed were humans, not vampires.
*** Actually William probably killed tonnes of Vampires during the time in which he was free.
** So... the only inconsistency here is Selene gaining a power boost and sunlight immunity by biting Alexander? Still weird.
** While there is more science involved than mysticism, this is at its core a supernatural disease, and the bite itself seems to be the key. We can assume bodily fluids and spilt blood doesn't count because of all the above cases where Selene doesn't get affected by them, but she does gain something when she bites Alexander. While Lucien was planning to inject Michael with Amelia's blood to make him a hybrid, there's no guarantee that would work, and it's ultimately a bite from Selene that does the job.
* And on a separate note, from the beginning, it was stated that Vampires and Lycans are both biologically compatible and capable of breeding. In six centuries or more, why didn't Lucien just capture a female vampire, and get her pregnant? Or, just in more recent times, use artificial insemination? Hell, if he was squicked over the idea of rape, he could have used Vampire blood on a volunteer. Instant surrogate mother.
** In a non-canonical novel, it's claimed that the reason Sonya became pregnant with Lucian's child is because they're both pure-bloods (i.e. born immortal).
** Sonja never came into full-terms with the child so we don't know if it would have survived.
** And since Sonja is TheLostLenore, maybe Lucien wanted to avoid disrespecting her memory. She was the only woman he was ever with, and he didn't want to tarnish that.
** There are also the practical issues of such a scheme; Lucian would have to capture a female Vampire (or somehow turn an innocent woman into a vampire), hope that she could conceive a child, keep her safe for nine months, and then raise the child in secret for however long it would take to make the child sufficiently powerful and skilled to defeat Viktor in a fight. Looking at how long everything would have to go exactly right for that plan to pay off, it's not exactly a viable solution; creating a hybrid might have been more complicated, but at least Lucian could be sure of getting a skilled fighter straight away.
** Does Lucian ''seem'' like the type who would force another woman into such a situation? Outside of the fact that he's not a rapist, he's also lying low and pretending to be dead. Trying to procreate with a Vampire, whether by capturing her, seducing her the old-fashioned way, or getting another one to infect a human...all very risky plans that would potentially blow his cover. Kraven ''could'' arrange it yes, but there are multiple reasons why he wouldn't want to. Looking for a human that matched the blood type and could be turned when the time was right was actually much simpler.
* Marcus apparently gets a chance to kill all of the children he doesn't want every two centuries, with the only people close to strong enough to fight him lying in torpor. And, by vampire tradition, also completely dependent on him for reawakening.
** It's not so simple. He may be strong, but he's not indestructible. The Death Dealers were all loyal to Viktor. They managed to subdue William in his beast form. They would have had an easier time with Marcus, especially in later centuries with more advanced weapons. Also, Marcus didn't want to jeopardize his chances of finding his brother.
* By rights, the 'blood borne disease' thing that makes Vampire/Werewolf Hybrids impossible should be lethal to both biter and bitten.
* [[spoiler: Viktor's internal {{Masquerade}} is dependent on the ''very'' powerful Markus not getting cranky during his 100 year rule segments. While Viktor has taken care of the key to William's prison fairly well, that does not go for Markus deciding to shatter ''everything else''.]]
** [[spoiler: When Markus finally ''does'' go ballistic, his father Alexander barely raises an eyebrow.]]
** [[spoiler: He was likely biding his time. Viktor was the only one who had any knowledge of the key or the location of the dungeon. Remember, Lucian's escape occurs during Viktor's reign, which wiped out a significant part of the Vampire population - or at least those related to The High Council. Markus would have awakened two hundred years later to find himself dealing with an entirely different coven loyal to Viktor and Amelia. It wasn't until Markus became a hybrid that he was physically powerful enough to take out the entire Coven himself. Regardless of the events of the first movie, things were bound to come to a head soon. With modern technology and biological science at his disposal, Viktor would have eventually come to realize that Markus's insinuation of supernatural heritage was a deception that no longer had to be entertained.]]
** [[spoiler: It is implied that most of the vampires that exist in the world are descended from Viktor rather than Markus, with Markus's only actual progeny being Viktor himself (and possibly Amelia); the Death Dealers are actually Viktor's army turned from his human days of being a warlord. Likely Viktor only considered keeping Marcus around due to being the source, and once it was proven Markus was lying about his "I die, you die", it was too late for Viktor to just up and kill Markus, who, up until ''Evolution'' was an ingrained Elder; he might not be in charge but was probably still popular enough to not just have his sleeping body dumped into a sunny patch.]]
* I wonder which race was first but I have a good theory, William and Markus are super duper close, almost literally doing everything together, inseparable, best friends as well as twins, so one day while hunting, Markus gets bit by a rabid bat (I assume the viruses were mutant forms of rabies, hence the bloodlust, they were already immortal) over the course of a few days, Markus becomes a vampire and gets the powers, so William for the first time isn't equal to Marcus, spurred by jealousy, he goes and looks for a rabid creature to bite him, wanting something stronger than a bat, he ends up bitten by a wolf, the problem is the dose of rabies he gets from a wolf is much much more potent, unlike the bat, which was enough to cause a minimal difference, hence William becoming unable to turn back. Also, the reason Lucian was the first Lycan is that his mother was bitten while pregnant with him, he basically became something along the lines of Blade. enough of the virus to be one of them, but not enough to be unable to turn back.
** According to the official canon, Werewolves were first. William was bitten by a rabid wolf protecting his brother while they were on a hunt together, and it caused him to become a Werewolf. Markus was later bitten by a bat, becoming a Vampire, though it's not really specified if this was intentional or not. As for the theory on Lucian's mother being bitten whilst pregnant, although it's not confirmed, it's one of the most popular theories out there as to how he became a Lycan.
*** Building on the above, maybe Markus went looking for a creature to bite him ''because'' William became a werewolf, looking for an edge, he looked for a smaller creature, hoping that a smaller creature wouldn't transmit as much of itself into him, allowing him more control, perhaps the legend of Vampires was already a thing, and he decided that a bat would be a safer bet.
*** Some theorize that one or both of Lucian's ''parents'' may have been of (human) Corvinus descent ''before'' his pregnant mother was bitten, thus accounting for him being the sole example of his kind to be born that way. It's not as if William's feral spawn wouldn't have chomped on ''every'' pregnant woman they happened across, after all.
* Why did Viktor give the task of collecting evidence of betrayal to Kraven? The ''person being accused of said betrayal'', Personally, I think Viktor knew Kraven would either fail to turn up any evidence or he knew Selene would rebel and run off to find said evidence herself and just wanted Kraven relaxing thinking Viktor still trusted him.
** I think he was referring to biting Kraven so he could see his memories and verify his betrayal that way, like how he did to Sonja in ''Rise of the Lycans''. He doesn't do it when he's first awakened because Selene wasn't able to organise her memories coherently, and he needs to wait for those to settle. By the time he's fully regenerated, Selene has the proof.
* Why did the Lycans have trouble finding a descendant of Alexander Corvinus? He was a European warlord who lived about 400 years before the identical ancestor point of all people of European descent (the point at which everyone living at that time is an ancestor to the entire population or has no living descendants), so shouldn't they just be able to grab any white person off the street?
** I think it has to do with the purity of those genes. 1600 years is a lot of time for genetics to become blended and muddied.
** Yes, they found plenty of descendants. Michael was just the first who had the match to be compatible for the hybrid.
* So, in the climax of Underworld: Evolution, William bites several members of Selene's human backup, who begin turning into Lycans a few minutes after they go unconscious, just like in the opening scene where a village is turned against the vampires as a trap. However, the difference here is that the villagers started changing and attacking a bunch of strange armored people they had never seen before. These soldiers know Selene is an ally and William is the enemy. So why would they begin attacking Selene instead of William? They seem to display tactics and a few of their skills before being turned. So why would their allegiance suddenly shift?
** The Cleaners didn't become Lycans, they became Werewolves. The difference being that Werewolves, who were bitten by William, were completely savage, lost all logical faculties, and were unable to ever return to their human forms.
** ''Rise of the Lycans'' also shows that only another werewolf would be able to command them or reason with them, which is how Lucian was able to rally them as part of his army. In wolf form, they don't understand human speech anymore.
* Why did Markus antagonise Selene and Michael? He knew Selene had killed Viktor, who he ''hated'', he was the only living Elder, had everything to gain from getting her trust, the key piece, and the location of William's prison. Michael himself was his great-grandnephew, and living proof that Lycan-dominant Hybrids could happen (in case he thought he himself was simply a fluke), giving Marcus hope that this might be able to "cure" William. All he had to do was actually talk to her, rather than... well, everything he did in the film.
** From what we've seen, Markus at least thought he was working with Viktor and Amelia in the past when he initially created the Death Dealers to trap William, only for Viktor to undermine his authority at the crucial moment. Without knowing the specifics of their subsequent reign as the Elders, it seems likely that Viktor spent a considerable amount of time undermining Markus, making sure he had the political authority to stop Markus from going after William again even if he didn't want to move against Markus more openly. With his new state making him considerably more powerful, Markus may have simply concluded that he wasn't going to "risk" working with others who would probably betray him again, focusing his efforts on finding the one person who'd never ''chosen'' to give up on him by restoring William to some form of sanity.
** Marcus, despite being Viktor's enemy, is not a good person. He wants to free his brother, who is a wild animal that will kill and curse countless people if he's let loose. It seems as though he bided his time, playing the politics game while the coven was strong. But he awakens now with the other two Elders dead, and a significant chunk of the Death Dealers wiped out, as well as having more powers. He simply doesn't care about holding back anymore and is revelling in it.
* At the start, why does Nathaniel just pointlessly snarl at Raze and wait for the Lycan to kill him, instead of running or pulling out some other weapon?
** Possibly waiting for Raze to make the first move. He may have been overconfident since they have the silver bullets and don't know about the Lycans' UV ammo, so he might have thought he could throw him off guard before shooting him.
