''Lone Star State of Mind'' is a 2002 teen comedy film directed by David Semel.

Jesus 'Earl' Crest (Joshua Jackson), named so after his pastor father was convinced that his son was the second coming, traveled with his father from place to place trying to preach to the sinful and degenerate. This resulted in a chair being busted over his father's head and Earl receiving a rude awakening in that no, he can't really heal the sick and wasn't the messiah.

Years later, and he lives with his mother, step-father, and step-sister. His step-sister, Baby (Jamie King), is his girlfriend, and they were dating before his mother and her father had even met, so they view it as okay in their book. His best friend is GayCowboy Jimbo (Matthew Davis), who he works with as an auto-mechanic. On dating Baby, Earl promises to look after her idiot of a cousin Junior (DJ Qualls), who robbed a drug dealer. With his father's killer released, the drug dealers wanting their product back, the buyers of the drugs wanting the product as well, Earl has a rather interesting week ahead of him.

!!This film contains examples of:

* AmusingInjuries: Junior and Tinker receive a lot of these, as does Earl to a lesser extent.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Baby seems sweet and rather ditzy, but if you try to harm Earl, you are in for a world of pain.
* BigEater: Sheriff Andy. At least once it's told that if he put as much effort in police work as he does eating, he would be much less dull.
* ButtMonkey: Junior and Tinker. Junior is a complete idiot that needs hand-holding and gets his ass handed to him repeatedly (including losing a finger because Earl's payment of his ransom was $200 short), while Tinker gets a lot of LaserGuidedKarma because not only is he the "brains" of the duo (so to speak), but he constantly tries to set things up so Earl will get killed (and gets his ass kicked in revenge). Even Earl doesn't gets away clean, getting shot a few times throughout the film.
* CarFu: Baby knows how to use it. The reason Tinker spends three-quarters of the film with more casts than a mummy is because she runs him over in revenge for him shooting Earl.
* CatchPhrase: Junior's is "I'm not stupid, you're stupid!"
* ChekhovsClassroom: Earl and Jimbo, taking a page from an action movie they had watched earlier, defeat some thugs by throwing a cell phone into the air and rushing them when they look up. Subverted later: Junior tries to imitate this trick, but prematurely congratulates himself on being "clever" and forgets to rush his opponent as the cell phone falls uselessly.
* {{Cowboy}}: Most of the cast wear Stetsons and are pretty jovial good ol' boys.
* {{Eagleland}}: An odd mixture of Type 1 and Type 2, as Earl, Baby, and Jimbo are clearly Type 1s, but the first two are having an incestuous relationship and Jimbo is an out homosexual. Whereas Junior and Tinker are clearly Type 2 rednecks who everybody else in town wishes would go away.
* DeusExMachina: [[spoiler:Earl would be dead if the man who killed his dad hadn't been there to shoot the last bad guy.]]
* DistractAndDisarm: Early in the movie, the protagonists watch a FilmWithinAFilm in which the hero distracts someone who has him at gunpoint by tossing a lighter into the air and then disarming him. [[ChekhovsLecture Later on]], [[TheHero Earl]] successfully replicates the stunt by distracting a Cartel goon with a lighter and in the third act of the film Junior tries the stunt himself but he's [[StupidCrooks so dumb]] that he spends the moment the goon is distracted patting himself in the back for his cleverness instead of disarming the guy and gets punched in the face as a result.
* DumbBlonde: Baby to an extent. She finds the disappearance of all of her funds suspicious enough to ask Earl what happened, but not suspicious enough to take more of an explanation than "I'm having a problem with your cousin".
* EverythingIsBigInTexas: The film takes place in rural Texas aims to show the virtues and drawbacks of that kind of life.
* EvilIsPetty: Junior gets his finger cut off by the narcos because Earl was $200 short. Mr. Smith is quick to order Earl and his friends killed even after getting all of his drugs back and killing his competition because he's just annoyed at all the inconvenience these cowboys ended up being.
* {{Fingore}}: Earl and Junior find out the hard way that not having all the money to pay back leads to this.
* FlirtyStepsiblings: Earl and Baby. They were dating ''before'' their parents even met, let alone married, and this reminder is an early RunningGag.
* GayCowboy: Jimbo. He's polite as can be, good with a shotgun, and rather worried about keeping his mechanic uniform clean. Also looking for a date the entire film.
* GenericEthnicCrimeGang: The gang that Tinker tried to sell the drugs to are unrepentant, stereotypical Mexican [[TheCartel Cartel]]-type goons who cut off Junior's finger as punishment for Earl being $200 short in his ransom payment. Smith's gang is an equally stereotypical Eighties action film-style "criminal Southerner" gang.
* GilliganCut: Tinker and Junior are fighting before an armed robbery.
-->'''Tinker''': "Junior there ain't no way I'm wearing a maxi-pad for a mask!" Cut to the scene of the robbery.
* GroinAttack: Junior forgot to turn on the safety to his pistol when holstering it in his pants.
* HelloAgainOfficer: Earl runs into Sheriff Andy every time something is going wrong.
* HuntingTheMostDangerousGame: Out of Clay Pigeons, no problem, use your failed lackey.
* IJustShotMarvinInTheFace: Junior, once he gets his hands on a gun. He's such a complete idiot that he shoots Earl ''twice'' '''and''' even after being given money to pay for a firearms safety course on the epilogue, he ''still'' doesn't checks if he shot all bullets before doing a celebratory PantsPositiveSafety holstering... with the GroinAttack that ensues.
* ItWorksBetterWithBullets: In a variation on this, when Earl knocks Tinker unconscious and searches his place, he's smart enough to locate and secure a gun Tinker had hidden. Tinker is not pleased to discover this when he goes to get the gun to shoot Earl (just as Earl expected he would).
* MajorInjuryUnderreaction: Earl gets shot twice by Junior and (aside from slumping over) his reaction is only to grunt out a "dammit, Junior". Junior [[IJustShotMarvinInTheFace accidentally puts a bullet in him]] [[GroinAttack somewhere below the belt]] in the epilogue and (also aside from slumping over) his only reaction is to say "ow".
* NeverHeardThatOneBefore: Earl and Baby have this reaction toward incest jokes about their relationship (and how it makes them hicks).
* NotBloodSiblings: The specific reason why Earl and Baby aren't Squicky when dating, not that Junior and Tinker don't like to give them crap about it.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: The ending suggests that Sheriff Andy may have been practicing this.
* OnlyAFleshWound: Earl gets shot at least three times throughout the movie, and at worst, he needs a twelve hour nap to go back to business as usual.
* OnlySaneMan: Earl. Most of the film's comedy comes from him being so exasperated at his {{Stupid Crook|s}} friends that he thinks of just ditching them (again) and leaving them to whichever grisly fate they sought, but he ''did'' swore to Baby that he would look after Junior...
* PoliceAreUseless: Part of the reason Earl has to do everything himself.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Sheriff Andy, even if he seems like a bit of an idiot. He's good for getting crooks arrested after the fact, but just saying that Earl was on a bingo is enough of an alibi for him to stop digging further.
* SexyShirtSwitch: Baby ends up wearing nothing but Earl's jersey at one point.
* StabTheScorpion: [[spoiler:The man who killed Earl's father has been following him in order to apologize and make amends, and ultimately saves his life.]]
* StraightGay: Jimbo. He's probably the most badass of the group, but him asking Earl if he thinks some other guy he meets may be gay and interested is a RunningGag. And then it turns out that the man who killed Earl's father (who is Thomas Hayden Church looking like some kind of Punisher wanna-be) is gay ''and'' available.
* StupidCrooks: Junior and Tinker, to a T. Junior is plain dim-witted and nobody trusts him with a gun at all for a pretty good reason, while Tinker has ChronicBackstabbingDisorder on top of being dim-witted (he, at least, feels kind of okay with it as long as he gets to see Earl die).
* YouHaveFailedMe: Again, this is how the villain, Mr. Smith, deals with failed lackeys. It's a good demonstration of how much of a petty and backstabbing bastard he is.
