''Colors'' is a 1988 [[MysteryAndDetectiveFilms police drama]] directed by Creator/DennisHopper, which follows two officers as they work to combat gang violence in UsefulNotes/LosAngeles.

Bob Hodges (Creator/RobertDuvall) is a career veteran who works for the [[FunWithAcronyms C.R.A.S.H.]] (Community Resources Against Street Hoodlums) division, and is greatly respected by his peers and the community. As the film begins, he is [[OldCopYoungCop paired with an upstart rookie]] named Danny [=McGavin=] (Creator/SeanPenn), who is brash and aggressive towards the local residents.

They are both thrown into conflict when the murder of one of a hoodlum causes racial tensions to boil over, and both cops are caught in the middle of a war between the Bloods, Crips, and Barrio gangs. Both Hodges and [=McGavin=] have to work together to stop the conflict on the streets and deal with pressures both outside and within their own department. [=McGavin=] is also conflicted about his relationship with Luisa (Creator/MariaConchitaAlonso), a Latino waitress who is bothered by his attitude towards the gangs.

The film was the first directorial work by Hopper in 18 years, and was notable for its RealLifeWritesThePlot elements (which included, among other things, real gang members being hired as extras). The film also caused controversy due to Penn's antics during filming -- he was arrested and sentenced to 39 days in jail for punching an extra on set.

!!! "Tropes. The War Is Here. The War is Now.:"

* TheEighties: Filmed in '87, released in '88: right around the time that the infamous crack epidemic was starting to sweep many large US cities.
* EightiesHair: Most noticeably with the women in the film, especially the Chicanas that hang out with the 21st Street guys.
* ARealManIsAKiller: After not taking him seriously earlier in the movie, Frog congratulates and extolls Felipe following their gunfight with the Crips, where Felipe helps ambush and murder several men.
* ActionFilmQuietDramaScene: Danny [=McGavin=] at one point turns off his music and stops working out to have a heart-to-heart with Bob Hodges, and to apologize for their differences.
* ActorAllusion: Creator/TonyTodd plays a Vietnam War veteran at the conference. Two years before the film’s release, Todd played a soldier serving in the Vietnam War in {{Film/Platoon}}.
* AgreeToDisagree: Hodges and [=McGavin=] essentially do this over their polar opposite strategies for police work.
* AllGirlsWantBadBoys: The gangsters have plenty of hot chicks around, despite being broke, cold-blooded killers living in the slums, and destined for prison or an early death themselves.
* AndTheAdventureContinues: The film ends with [=McGavin=] and his new partner going back on patrol.
* ArcWords: The joke about the 2 bulls that Hodges shares with [=McGavin=]. At the end of the movie after Hodges is killed, [=McGavin=] shares it with his new partner.
* BewareTheQuietOnes:
** Rocket, who doesn't say much and rarely even raises his voice (even when threatening people), but he's by far the most dangerous and violent Crip in the gang.
** "Larry Sylvester: Looney Tunes!" Look out for this guy. Doesn't act up or talk alot, but bangs women and kills other gangsters with no problem.
* BigBrotherMentor: Frog to Felipe. Frog is a legit old school veterano of the East LA gang world, and early on he seems at least decently opposed to his little brother Felipe getting involved. One night the Crips do a GanglandDriveBy on a 21st Street house party, and an angry Felipe asserts his intention to join the ranks and help the guys take revenge for his neighbourhood. After Felipe's InitiationCeremony, Frog embraces the mentor role.
* BitchInSheepsClothing: Luisa, who seems like a total sweetheart at first. Later on after she and [=McGavin=] break up, she's at a gang party getting unceremoniously fucked by Larry in some crusty bedroom, and [=McGavin=] sees her in full skank mode. She drops the GirlNextDoor facade and says with an attitude, "Look at me, Danny! This is me too, man!"
* BookEnds: [=McGavin=] begins training a rookie who acts much him at the end of the film, just like Hodges did with [=McGavin=] at its beginning.
* BottomlessMagazines: You'll see this at times in the movie, especially when someone is shooting a sub-machine gun or something fully automatic.
* BullyingADragon: [=McGavin=] (Sean Penn) does this almost as a rule when dealing with the street gang members, because many of them are bullies themselves. He fails to see how ineffective and actually damaging his approach is in the long run [[spoiler:until Hodges ends up dead]].
* TheCameo: [[Film/{{Eraserhead}} Jack Nance]] makes a brief appearance as one of the police officers in the breakroom.
%%* ByTheBookCop: Hodges.
* CarFu: Multiple instances, usually when [=McGavin=] is driving.
* CasualDangerDialogue: Hodges and [=McGavin=] are hanging upside down in their flipped vehicle after a harrowing shooting and car chase, and Hodges tells [=McGavin=] to come have dinner at his place:
** "My wife wants to meet you. She says you can bring a date."
** "Thanks."
%%* ChaseScene: With cars and motorcycles.
* ClusterFBomb: [=McGavin=] does this frequently.
* CollateralDamage:
** Near the end of the movie when the cops close in on the 21st Street gang and are in the process of arresting them, Bird (Gerardo Mejia) makes an impulsive decision to commit SuicideByCop [[spoiler:and shoots Hodges]]. The other cops immediately light Bird up with dozens of bullets, and his girlfriend gets inadvertently smoked right along with him.
** A neighbour lady is killed by stray shots when the Crips do a GanglandDriveBy on a 21st Street house party.
* CoolOldGuy: Bob Hodges (Robert Duvall), the older veteran LAPD cop that is respectful to pretty much everyone, and does his best to maintain affable relations with the gangs in his district.
* CopHater: Naturally, the vast majority of the gangsters (and even some civilians) are this. A very precious few of them are ''somewhat'' friendly to Hodges only because he is such a ReasonableAuthorityFigure, but even then, it's only superficial and just a way to get the cops to leave them alone.
* CowboyCop: [=McGavin=]. He eventually mellows out later in the film, though.
* CrapsackWorld: The setting of the movie: late '80s LA, firmly in the grip of gang warfare amidst the crack epidemic.
* CurbStompBattle: High Top, a Blood, gets just about smashed into the floor, and beaten to within an inch of his life by 2 or 3 jacked dudes in jail.
* CycleOfRevenge: Many of the assaults and murders in the film are in retaliation for some other previous assault or murder. All sides take heavy losses, including the police and innocent civilians, and there's no sign of any of it ever ceasing or being resolved.
* DatingCatwoman: Danny [=McGavin=], the most despised White cop in the movie, starts dating Luisa, a Mexican girl living in the barrio and closely associated with several Chicano gang members. The relationship gets more precarious every time [=McGavin=] does something to piss off the homeboys, and eventually it drives a permanent wedge between him and Luisa.
* DeadGuyOnDisplay: Robert Craig, the Blood who is assassinated by Rocket and the Crips early in the movie, has an open casket funeral that gets interrupted by a GanglandDriveBy.
* DeathSeeker: You have to wonder if some of the gang bangers are this. Many of them know death is imminent and seem unbothered by the idea, and in fact may be emboldened by it. At the very least, they're NotAfraidToDie. Some of it is a result of PsychoSerum as well.
* DestinationDefenestration: High Top is on a dirt bike being pursued by [=McGavin=] in a car. [=McGavin=] cuts him off and causes High Top to crash into the car, flying off his bike and right through the window of a restaurant.
* DownerEnding: [[spoiler:Hodges is dead]], Frog’s brother is likely getting a life sentence, and none of the violence has subsided in any way.
* DyingMomentOfAwesome: For both Larry and Rocket, during the epic shootout between the Crips and the 21st Street guys. The 2 square up like gunslingers in an old Western, except it's 80s LA and they have Micro Uzis. Each man kills the other. Basically interchangeable with ShowdownAtHighNoon or DuelToTheDeath.
* EthicalSlut: Luisa does seem like a good person overall, and never does anything evil to anyone. However, it is revealed that she isn't really the GirlNextDoor like she seemed at first. We see her hussied up at a house party full of gangbangers, clearly having just been screwed by Larry in one of the bedrooms. Danny [=McGavin=] happens upon her when the cops are called about a shooting and shit gets awkward. Ultimately she stands tall and says she is who she is.
* EveryCarIsAPinto: See MadeOfExplodium.
* ExcuseMeComingThrough: Hodges and [=McGavin=] spot High Top out in public and a ChaseScene begins, with High Top shoving and knocking over several bystanders as he runs from the cops, first on foot and then on a dirt bike.
* FamilyUnfriendlyViolence:
** Thrown through a window, shot and killed during sex, gang violence, etc.
** There is a very hard-to-find deleted scene of an innocent civilian being stabbed for no reason right in front of his family.
** Additionally, 2 women are killed by stray bullets over the course of the movie.
* {{Fanservice}}: A sex scene between Penn and Alonso.
* FanserviceExtra: A naked woman is among those arrested when the police raid a drug house. She does absolutely nothing in the scene -- or for the scene -- except be the subject of Penn's MaleGaze. The actress is even uncredited.
* FauxAffablyEvil: Frog and many members of his gang pretend to be reasonable with Hodges and try to present themselves as less brutal than their Crip enemies, but in fact they're just as dangerous, ruthless, and violent (at the end, Frog smiles when he realizes that [[spoiler:Hodges has been killed]] in the shoot-out).
* FinalBattle: One of the last scenes has a huge shootout involving 15 or 20 gang members. The 21st Street gang has come to wipe out the Crips in retaliation for the GanglandDriveBy they pulled the previous night.
* FlyawayShot: There is one of these at the end of the scene where [[spoiler:Hodges]] is killed and [[spoiler:[=McGavin=] ]] does his SkywardScream.
* FruitCart: A few are knocked over during a ChaseScene.
* FunWithAcronyms: The LAPD's specialized anti-gang force is known as C.R.A.S.H. (City Resources Against Street Hoodlums).
* {{Gangbangers}}: The film deals with the ongoing threat of gang warfare in L.A.
* GanglandDriveBy: Naturally for a urban crime drama set in L.A., (the city that popularized the drive by shooting) they show up.
* GangOfHats: The idea for the title of the film comes directly from this trope. The Crips and Bloods especially wear vividly colour-coordinated clothing and bandanas in blue and red, respectively. The Chicano gangsters such as Frog and his crew don't really use colours, but have their own distinct style of dress (flannel shirts with only the collar buttoned, oversized khakis, hairnets, knee-high socks, house slippers) that makes them easily identifiable as well.
* GangstaRap: Music/{{IceT}} did the theme song.
* GenreSavvy: Hodges is aware that [=McGavin's=] macho, cowboy badass approach to law enforcement is very likely to get them both killed.
* GenericGraffiti: Many of the areas explored in this film add up to a true UrbanHellScape, absolutely covered in ridiculous amounts of graffiti on every humanly reachable surface.
* GirlNextDoor: Luisa, played by Maria Conchita Alonso. She is naturally very beautiful with great skintone and amazing dark hair, and comes across genuine and relatable. It is subverted later in the movie when [=McGavin=] runs into her at a gangster party in full slut mode.
* GoodGunsBadGuns: You can see the difference between the more conservative types of weapons used by the cops (standard issue Beretta 9mm, .38 revolvers, pump shotguns) and the overstated firepower often wielded by gang members (completely illegal guns like full-auto Uzis, sawed-off shotguns and Vietnam era assault rifles).
* GoodIsNotNice: [=McGavin=]. "I didn't volunteer for C.R.A.S.H. to play games and be nice to these assholes."
* GreasySpoon: The hole-in-the-wall diner that Luisa works at in the barrio of East LA. It looks downright abysmal.
* HellholePrison: A couple of scenes in LA County jail make it look pretty miserable and dangerous.
* HeritageDisconnect: The Chicano gangsters are of Mexican descent, but many of them are native Californians, speak English almost exclusively, and don't really talk about Mexico or any connection to it.
* TheHeroDies: [[spoiler:The cops are arresting the whole 21st Street gang after the big gunfight with the Crips, and Bird desperately fires off a round just seconds before being handcuffed, killing Hodges]].
* HeroicBSOD: [[spoiler:[=McGavin=] gets it after Hodges dies at the end of the film]].
* HiddenInPlainSight: Hodges pulls his car up alongside a group of guys he already knows to be gang members, and facetiously asks one of them if they have seen any gang members around.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: Pacman [=McGavin=] catches a Chicano punk vandalizing a wall with gang-related wording, and after interrogating him, sprays the kid's face green with his own paint can.
-->'''[=McGavin=]''': "What should I have done, put masking tape on his ears!?"
* HumanShield: High Top grabs a random woman and holds her in front of himself during the ChaseScene when [=McGavin=] corners him inside a crowded restaurant.
* ImperialStormtrooperMarksmanshipAcademy: The 21st Street gangsters corner the Crips in their hideout and a raging gunfight ensues. Rocket is the last Crip standing, and even with several guys at once shooting at him from close range, they hit literally everything except the guy they're aiming at. He and Larry end up killing each other in a DuelToTheDeath seconds later.
* InitiationCeremony: A street gang variant. Felipe, Frog's younger brother, insists on being let into the gang after their party is shot up by the Crips. His initiation consists of him getting the ever loving piss beaten out of him by a few of the more senior members for a minute or so until Frog gives the command for them to stop.
* InterruptedIntimacy: A Crip named Killer Bee is mistaken for Rocket by the cops, who catch him actually banging Rocket's girlfriend. They raid the room with guns drawn and tell Killer Bee to freeze, but he makes a sudden move reaching for his pants and is shot to death by Officer Baines.
* InTheBack: Officer Baines shoots Killer Bee in this manner when the naked Killer Bee is interrupted during sex and makes a sudden reach for his pants.
* ItCantBeHelped: This is Bird's response to Ron Delaney when Ron tries talking some sense into the 21st Street gangsters about walking away from their dead-end lifestyle. "There's always gona be gangs man, there's always gona be fighting! That's just the way the world is, ese!"
* JerkassHasAPoint: Hodges basically calls [=McGavin's=] approach to gang relations shortsighted and reckless. [=McGavin=] keenly points out that the gangsters are cold-blooded killers who don't have any real respect for Hodges' attempts at a rapport, and only respect force and aggression.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: [=McGavin=] proves to be this. For all of his reckless behavior and cocky demeanor, he genuinely respects Hodges, is visibly shaken by the sight of an innocent by-stander killed during a gang drive-by, and is devasted when [[spoiler: Hodges is fatally shot by one of the thugs in Frog's gang]].
* KitchenChase: [=McGavin=] pursues High Top into a restaurant and a 1-on-1 struggle ensues, carrying over into and concluding in the kitchen area.
* LockAndLoadMontage: Rocket and the Crips are shown in their hideout, loading guns and passing them around in preparation for beef with the cops and the 21st Street gang.
* MachoLatino: Most of the Chicano/Mexican gangsters in the film fit this trope.
* MadeOfExplodium: In the chase scene immediately following the GanglandDriveBy at the funeral, [=McGavin=] manages to bump the other car off the road, at which point it crashes and explodes dramatically for no apparent reason.
* MarkedToDie:
** High Top, a Blood who gets caught selling drugs to Crips on the side, and catches a vicious beating from his own gang in jail.
** Danny [=McGavin=], when he's wrongly blamed for Killer Bee's death due to MistakenIdentity.
* MirandaRights: It's a cops and criminals film, after all.
* MisfitMobilizationMoment: After the Crips shoot up the 21st Street house party, Frog, Larry, Felipe, Bird, and the rest of the guys group up for a revenge attack on the Crips. It includes sort of a ThemeMusicPowerUp to go with it.
* MistakenIdentity: A dual example that kicks off massive drama:
** Killer Bee is mistaken for Rocket and wrongly shot and killed by Officer Baines when he's interrupted during sex by the cops and suddenly moves to reach for his pants.
** [=McGavin=] gets wrongly blamed for the shooting and a hit is put on him for it.
* MoreCriminalsThanTargets: "We got over 50,000 gang bangers out there!"
* NoHoldsBarredBeatdown: A Blood named High Top is working out with the other Bloods in the rec yard at the county lockup when a few of the biggest, baddest-looking of the group randomly turn on High Top and beat him severely, apparently for selling drugs to Crips on the side.
* NoListeningSkills: A former gangbanger now working with the LAPD on community outreach tries talking some sense into the 21st Street guys (and their girls). He points out the toxic nature of the gang world, encourages them to consider walking away from it and to do something good with their lives. They essentially tell him his head's up his ass, it's the only life they know, and hell no they're not walking away from it. They even shit on Hodges, who it almost seemed like Frog was halfway cool with. At that point, it's clear these guys are headed for a DownerEnding.
* NoPrisonSegregation: Inside the county jail, the general population is shown grouping together by gang affiliation and ethnicity, but still sharing the same space and having to basically live on top of each other.
* OldCopYoungCop: Hodges and [=McGavin=]. At the end of the film, [=McGavin=] assumes the senior role and begins teaching a young recruit himself.
* OpeningScroll: There's one at the start of the movie, laying out LA's street gang problem, the high murder rate, and how vastly outnumbered and outgunned the anti-gang task force was at the time.
* OppositesAttract: Danny "Pacman" [=McGavin=], a White cop, meets Luisa, a cute Mexican girl from the barrio, and the 2 are immediately into each other. It quickly becomes clear their relationship will not be an easy one.
* PointOfNoReturn: Felipe is physically beaten and jumped into the gang as an officially recognized member: a life you don't usually escape. "No turning back now, homes. You joined the gang."
* PoliceBrutality: Most of the police tactics used in this movie would be utterly unthinkable today, ''especially'' in a city like Los Angeles. No one would even try.
* PoliceProcedural: For a movie, it's a fairly unromantic and straightforward depiction of what really went on in the world of the Los Angeles gang task force around the time of 1987-88.
* PrecisionFStrike:
** When Ron Delaney is trying to talk some gangsters into rethinking their lives. He says he was sent by Bob Hodges, the CoolOldGuy cop. "What does Hodges know, man? '''FUCK''' Hodges, man!"
** Rocket, when his homeboys in the van are spitting a ''terrible'' freestyle and getting on his nerves: "Hey man, shut the '''FUCK''' up!"
* PrettyBoy: More than once, Danny [=McGavin=] is shown to be more concerned with his appearance and meeting girls than focusing on his work.
-->'''Hodges'''[extremely irritated]:"You wanna look at pussy or learn about this job, which is it?"
* PrisonsAreGymnasiums: In the scene at county jail where High Top gets jumped, he is lifting weights in the recreation yard surrounded by ripped, buffed-out dudes who turn on him and almost beat him to death.
* PsychoSerum: There are a few scenes that show gang members using hard, dangerous drugs such as crack and PCP, and completely bugging out with bizarre/violent behaviour.
* PunctuatedPounding: The Bloods in jail that taunt High Top while beating the shit out of him for doing side deals with the Crips. "RESPECT * '''punch''' * RED * '''knee''' * BLOOD! Mothafucka..."
* PutDownYourGunAndStepAway: Danny [=McGavin=] basically says this to High Top (even though he's unarmed) when the latter takes a random lady as a HumanShield. "Release the woman motherfucker!"
* PyrrhicVictory: While cuffed on the ground, Frog sees [[spoiler:Hodges getting killed]]. He smiles to himself: he may have to go to jail now, but [[spoiler:Hodges won't be giving him any more trouble when he gets out]].
* RandomEventsPlot: If there is a plot in the movie, it's solving the murder of Robert Craig by Rocket. Really though, it's more of just a look at the war/dynamics between the various gangs and police in late 1980s Los Angeles.
* RealityIsUnrealistic: Critics thought the scene of the gang gunfire interrupting the funeral wasn't realistic. Shortly after the scene wrapped, an actual church service a short distance away was in fact interrupted by gang gunfire.
* RealLifeWritesThePlot: Several extras in the film were not actors; rather they were actual gang members, and some were even involved in real shootings during filming. The movie also received criticism upon its release due to its brutal realism, and the fact that gang-related altercations were breaking out at some movie theaters.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Bob Hodges (Robert Duvall) for sure.
* RedOniBlueOni: Hodges (the "blue" seasoned veteran, who stresses a by-the-book approach and friendly relations with the people he meets) is paired with [=McGavin=] (the "red" hot-headed recruit who offends everyone he comes in contact with).
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Hodges delivers a calm but very effective one to [=McGavin=] after his cowboy antics go too far.
* ReformedCriminal: Ron Delaney, the former gangster who speaks at the police/neighbourhood meeting as well as to the 21st Street guys at one point. He doesn't seem to get much better results than anyone else trying to help.
* SawedOffShotgun: More commonly used by the gangsters than cops, but ShotgunsAreJustBetter in this movie in general.
* ScaryBlackMan: Rocket. Many of the characters in the film are gangbangers and cold blooded killers. However most have a personality and a "live for today since I may not be here tomorrow" attitude. But Rocket spends virtually the whole movie just sitting and listening to 80's era gangsta rap with a blank expression on his face. It's obvious even other members of his own gang are terrified of him.
* SeenItAll: Bob is a veteran of some of the toughest streets in America. But even he is clearly fazed by the distraught husband of a victim of collateral damage from the drive by shooting at the house party. The veteran cop trying to offer the grieving man comfort clearly doesn’t even know what to tell him.
* SenselessSacrifice: [[spoiler:Certainly Hodges. This is an honest, principled man who truly wants to make a difference in his community. The reality is that the community pretty much despises him and all the other police, and wipe their asses with Hodges' noble intentions. He dies in the line of duty, and not a single thing is improved by any of his valiant efforts.]]
* ShootTheShaggyDogStory: Despite all the efforts nothing has changed at all, and [[spoiler:Hodges is dead]].
* ShotgunsAreJustBetter: The weapon of choice for several characters, good and bad.
* SkywardScream: [[spoiler:[=McGavin=] does this when Hodges is killed by Bird]].
* SpicyLatina: Luisa.
* TheStoolPigeon: A handful of gang members end up being this when they're arrested for something serious. Frog actually does it to get out of prison by letting Hodges know about the hit on [=McGavin=] for Killer Bee's death, which in turn motivates the Crips to shoot up the 21st Street party later.
* StormingTheCastle: Near the end of the movie, Frog and his guys, armed to the teeth, go to the SupervillainLair where Rocket and the Crips are hiding out and unleash a barrage of gunfire, killing all 7 or 8 of them in a dramatic FinalBattle.
* SuicideByCop: Bird, one of the main Chicano gangsters, does this near the end of the movie[[spoiler:, taking Hodges (and incidentally, his girlfriend) with him]].
* SupervillainLair: The derelict house, shelled out and covered in GenericGraffiti, where the Crips pass their down time getting high, listening to music and planning crimes.
* TakingTheBullet: [[spoiler:Hodges inadvertently takes the bullet meant for [=McGavin=] when the 21st Street gang is cornered and being arrested, and Bird desperately commits SuicideByCop]].
* TemporaryLoveInterest: Luisa with [=McGavin=]. He's a cop, hated by most people in Luisa's neighbourhood to begin with. Eventually, they find themselves at odds over this.
* ThemeMusicPowerUp: When Frog and his gang are gathering forces to go and wipe out the Crips. It's in retribution for the GanglandDriveBy at the house party where, in addition, an innocent neighbour was killed by a stray bullet(s).
* TitleSequence: After the first few minutes at the police station, Hodges and [=McGavin=] get partnered up and hit the streets for their daily patrol. This kicks off the opening credits, set to the tune of One Time One Night by Los Lobos, as the 2 main characters cruise Los Angeles ready for whatever.
* TogetherInDeath: Bird and the chick he was hanging out with are both killed when [[spoiler:he shoots Hodges]] and several cops shoot him in return, several times. The girl was definitely not the intended target, but was a victim of CollateralDamage because she just happened to be right there at that moment. Their handcuffed corpses are seen lying side by side in an overhead shot as the scene wraps.
* TookALevelInBadass: Felipe starts off as a knuckleheaded kid throwing rocks at a police car. He gets no real respect until he is viciously jumped in to the 21st Street gang, at his own insistence, via ass-kicking from other members. By the end of the movie he is a full fledged gang member having taken part in a shootout where several Crips are killed, and is on his way to prison most likely for the rest of his life when the cops catch up to his gang.
* UrbanHellscape: 1980s East and South Central Los Angeles was quite the rundown CrapsackWorld: covered in graffiti, overgrowth, blighted buildings, gang wars, poverty and all-around rampant chaos.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: [=McGavin=] uses brutal tactics and behaves recklessly, but he genuinely believes that he's on the side of law and order.
* WhiteGangbangers: The one pale White, ginger-haired gangster that rolls with Frog and the 21st Street set, who are unanimously Hispanic/Chicano except for the 2 black members Larry and Spanky. Of course, he is credited as "Whitey."
* WistfulSmile: Hodges has this. He's a genuinely good natured guy who lives in a CrapSackWorld and knows it.
* WouldHurtAChild: One dealer uses pre-teen children to carry and distribute drugs around the neighbourhood for him, undoubtedly putting them in mortal danger.
* WrongSideOfTheTracks: The movie is pretty much all about what goes on in this "part of town": the gang neighbourhoods of Los Angeles.
* YoungFutureFamousPeople:
** The main example is a young, uncredited Mario Lopez, maybe 14 or 15 years old, playing one of the Mexican/Chicano 21st Street gangsters.
** Courtney Gains also plays a very unlikely role as the lone White member of the same gang.
