6	''A Girl Named Sooner'' is a 1975 Creator/{{NBC}} MadeForTVMovie directed by Delbert Mann, based on Suzanne Clauser's [[FilmOfTheBook 1972 novel]] of the same name.

8	It's about a young girl named Sooner (Susan Deer) who lives with her guardian, an elderly moonshiner named Mam Hawes (Creator/ClorisLeachman), in a backwoods near the small town of Vevay, Indiana during TheGreatDepression. Mam brings Sooner into town and attempts to collect foster support on the child, bringing her worth as a guardian into question. Enter town veterinarian "Mac" [=McHenry=] (Creator/RichardCrenna) and his wife Elizabeth (Creator/LeeRemick), a couple who don't have have a child. They take in Sooner.

The bridge Sooner plays near at the beginning of the film was slated for destruction, but was kept up so it could be filmed. The river you often see in the background in many scenes is the Ohio.
