!! Notable Biology

The Wurmple is a small caterpillar-like creature, and is generally regarded as one of the oddest creatures found in the woodlands of the Hoenn and Sinnoh regions. It is unique in the fact that it has a branching evolutionary tree, one of the very few Bug-types to possess one. Upon evolution, a Wurmple will transform into either a Silcoon or a Cascoon, and from there become a Beautifly or a Dustox, respectively.

Close analysis of Wurmple DNA reveal that it has several dormant sets of genes in its juvenile phase. Upon evolution, certain hormones secreted by the evolving animal will activate one of two configurations, transforming the Pokemon into a adolescent form. This means that both Dustox and Beautifly respectively will give birth to Wurmple. The juvenile Wurmple itself is rather unprepossessing looking- it is quiet, timid and shy, and spends most of its life consuming leaves and shrubs. Wurmple can eat up to five times its weight in food per day. If threatened, it prefers to flee, but will often secrete a noxious-smelling chemical to distract its pursuer.

It is not possible for a Wurmple to have both evolution-unlocking hormones. It is believed that the development of the hormone is temperature controlled. Studies have shown that Wurmple raised in cooler conditions have a better chance of becoming Cascoon, and those raised in warmer conditions will more often become Silcoon.

Silcoon and Cascoon are very much alike- both are surrounded by a thick layer of organic fibers secreted by the animal. They spend this period of their lives hanging from the branches of trees. Unlike their relatives Kakuna and Metapod, these forms need some sort of sustenance, which is obtained by filtering small bits of pollen and small insects from the air. As a method of defense, they are ringed with an array of spines to protect themselves from curious Taillow or the occasional Zigzagooon. Cascoon, however, tend to have larger, broader spines, whereas Silcoon have finer pointed spines. Cascoon tend to look more asymmetrical and haphazard.

Upon their final evolution, the differences are very pronounced. The slightly larger Dustox is purple and mothlike, and prefers hunting for small insects after dusk. It possesses a large "false face" on the front of its body to frighten away predators. Being nocturnal, Dustox rely more on smell and hearing to hunt, and have smaller, compound eyes and more sensitive antennae. They are drawn to bright lights, and many live around cities.

On the other hand, Beautifly are smaller and diurnal. They are very similar to the Butterfree of the Kanto region, suggesting some sort of shared common ancestry. However, they can be distinguished from both Dustox and Butterfree by their large, brilliantly coloured wings. Despite their cute-looking appearance, they are one of the apex predators of the forests surrounding Oldale Town, and can be seen traveling in huge airborne flocks, searching for prey.

!! Habitat

Wurmple are ubiquitous in the regions surrounding southern Hoenn. They are happy in areas of woodland or forest. Many will spend their entire Wurmple phase clinging to one tree, consuming leaves. Upon their transformation, the new Silcoon/Cascoon will fasten themselves to a high branch. Beautifly will leave the trees, and join a nearby flock, whereas Dustox will continue to live in the undergrowth alone or in small groups.

!! Diet

Wurmple are pure herbivores and will not eat much else other than leaves. Dustox will eat smaller insects. Beautifly will attack animals in flocks and drain their blood for sustenance. Many trainers may abandon their Beautifly after observing the grisly feeding habits of these creatures for the first time.

!! Hazards

Wurmple are among the least dangerous of Hoenn Pokemon to catch and raise. They are slow-moving, gentle, and amicable. Upon evolution into a pupae form, they are self-sustaining and require little care or attention. Beautifly and Dustox, however, are more temperamental, and require a degree of finesse and care, as an angry or alarmed specimen can be difficult to control and restrain and can end in injury, inadvertent poisoning, or both.

!! Courting

Both creatures will attract mates via pheromones. Female Dustox will actively seek out mates during late spring. They will often shower large stretches of land with sweet-smelling pheromones, which attract males. Spectacular aerial battles are fought over the females, which are often lethal.

Beautifly mate later then their relatives, and their courting rituals involve the flock splitting into male and female halves. These two halves part ways, and will seek out a similar "semi-flock" of the opposite sex with which to mate with. Many biologists believe that this is to prevent inbreeding from occurring.

!! Social Structure

Beautifly travel in large flocks of up to twenty individuals. Dustox live alone or in small groups of up to five. Wurmple live alone or in small groups.
