17* ''Status'': Dormant
18* ''Genre'': Suspense/Adventure
19* ''Synopsis'': On ancient Terra, a plot is hatched to create an immortal golem, Garland, by sacrificing Terra's prince. A young boy named Kuja finds himself caught up in the chaos, fleeing for his life alongside the prince... but how long can they survive?
20* ''Comments'': This is a fantastic story. It takes place on Terra 5000 years before the start of the game, and the world serves to flesh out some of the underdeveloped plot points of the game, most notably Taharka, the monster-bug thing you fight in Ipsen's Castle. Not only that, but it's an immensely gripping read in its own right. It's pretty dark and violent, yes, but maintains a level of emotional maturity throughout. Politics, doomsday cults, and themes of betrayal make this a story you simply won't want to put down. (It's not complete yet, though.)

33* ''Synopsis'': 200 years after the Mist War, Luthane Crescent goes on a pilgrimage to seek out his heritage. All he's found is a Genome with a wild streak and a big secret...
34* ''Comments'': A very well-written story that takes the reader to the world of FFIX several centuries after the game's ending. Can't really say much more here without spoiling parts of the story, but it definitely has some thought-provoking themes, {{TearJerker}}s, and comedic moments. Oh, and you might want to keep children from reading it - there's a scene or several that might not be suitable for anyone that isn't at least a teen (due to site requirements, I'll note here that it involves some risque yaoi).
35** This story is incredible. The writing is beautiful and flows incredibly easily, while painting a detailed picture at the same time, the story itself is excellently told, and the world building is downright wonderful. Again, can't say too much without spoiling the story, but it's certainly worth a read.

40* ''Synopsis'': A magical accident of fantastical proportions sends Zidane Tribal on an unexpected adventure in a world so different from his own. In order to get home, he will once again be dragged into something so much greater than himself, meeting both friends and foes in the process. Will he survive to the end of the school year?
41* ''Comments'': There wasn't a crossover section for this page yet and it's my first time recommending something, so this troper put it here. This fic is a crossover with Harry Potter and the only good one at that. The author updates once a week, and the story is both funny and interesting with ten chapters posted at the time of this rec. Needless to say, I highly recommend it.
42** Seconded recommendation. The author clearly knew both works inside and out, and both have OriginalFlavor in droves; [=FF9=] segments feel like [=FF9=], HP sefments feel like HP. --{{Grandy}}

60* ''Status'': Complete
61* ''Genre'': Family/Drama
62* ''Synopsis'': He was the hero of prevailing peace. Then the hesitant King of Alexandria. Now, he was a reserved and calculating man, left to raise three girls all on his own. Trouble is looming with his daughter's growth. And the past is catching up. They all play a part, but now they must guess which one.
63* ''Comments'': Anti-Broadcast's debut into writing, and a wonderful one. It begins with an unnexpected death of a character beloved by many; a tearjerker right at the start. One would expect it to be a dirty move, but actually it's played as one of the story's main strenghts. The writing is filled with the smallest of details, as if the world is living and breathing to the reader's eyes. Unlikely other fics in which the main character's kids are written as clones of their former parents, the author knows how to write kids, each of them have their own personality and quirks. There's a prequel called ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/14093982/1/The-Golden-Hour The Golden Hour]]'', worth-reading as well.

69* ''Genre'': Drama
70* ''Synopsis'' : Amarant Coral searches for redemption. Irontail Fratley searches for peace. Both men are ten years and one woman too late. Ongoing.
71* ''Comments'' : Written by legendary FFIX writer Guardian1, this is a {{TearJerker}} right from the start, beginning with a beloved character's death. Won't spoil much, but such a risky movie begins one of the saddest stories ever... that manages to be funny, a mix of dark humor, dork humor and plain dark. There's also romance, Freya/Amarant works as a couple and they have their funny and heartwarming moments. A tale of a tale of grief, acceptance, emancipation... And it's unfinished circa 2008, sorry. I do wish it got a proper ending, but still a good reading. I love Gudrun (or 'Grunty' as referred to by the author), her relationship between both Fratley and Amarant is between wholesome and crude. Contains (as mentioned in the beginning) a major character death, a bit of violence that might scare young viewers and it is filled with a landscape of swearing, but that's the author's style and charm, you get used to it (or maybe not).

75* ''Status'' : In progress
76* ''Genre'': Drama/Adventure
77* ''Synopsis'' : Twenty years after Kuja's downfall, a now middle-aged Freya Crescent is driven into exile by her homeland's new ruler. Lost, broken, but not defeated, the once proud dragoon sets out to unravel a conspiracy that threatens to plunge the Mist Continent into war once again.
78* ''Comments'' : I read this story back in 2017-2018. I was in eighth, ninth grade when I read this one. It's one of the main Final Fantasy IX fics that I liked a lot and inspired me to write my own stuff, but moving on... A chilling post-game story revolving around politics, corruption, lies, betrayal, love and drama in a very soap opera way mixed with Game of Thrones. There are some heartwarming moments between the raw, gut wrenching writing filled with cynicism and hopelessness. The calm before the storm, I'd say. Action scenes are wonderfully done, the game's lore mixes well with the author's own, so do the old and new characters. Story is rated Teen, though there are some disturbing and graphic scenes, and a bit of swearing too. Definitely worth reading if you enjoy medieval-like stories.

84* ''Synopsis'': For centuries, Burmecia and Alexandria were involved in needless wars. When both nations go to war once again, father and warrior Bartholomew Brandford is called to serve in the Burmecian forces. Leaving his wife Lenneth Crescent and their son Jack behind, he struggles with the contradictions and horrors of war. His family and close ones are not left untouched.
85* ''Comments'': Under the Crescent Moon is a profound and surreal two-parter fic series, dealing with Burmecian culture and history as experienced by Freya Crescent's ancestors, and eventually from the perspective of our favorite Dragon Knight herself. The author's refreshingly experimental style takes us on a dreamlike journey across Gaia, along with a massive cast of colorful OCs through which love, pain, friendship and loss are explored against the backdrop of a savage war between Alexandria and Burmecia. While headcanon-heavy enough to be borderline AU, good fanfiction about Burmecian society is really scarce, and the massive worldbuilding UTCM provides while still remaining a character-driven story makes it a rare gem more than worth reading. The Archive of Our Own version features a huge collection of paintings depicting the fic's setting and protagonists. 91* ''Status'' : In progress
92* ''Genre'': Adventure/Romance
93* ''Synopsis'' : This story takes place immediately after the ending of [=ff9=]. Everything seems to be going perfectly, but the events that took place in the fight against Kuja have broken the seal on the gateway to the Underworld. What fiends and new threats await within? will our heroes be able to close the gateway, or will all of Gaia be lost?
94* ''Comments'' : A Final Fantasy IX/Final Fantasy Tactics crossover featuring Ramza Beoulve from Tactics, as well as a range of original characters, Underworld Chaos is quite a journey. The writing evolves with each chapter, character relationships are well-written and the fighting sequences are top notch, you get to see a picture of what's going on without getting lost. The Underworld's lore is so well-constructed and interesting that it feels like a character in its own right. As the story progresses, the plot gets a darker and somber tone, and when I say it gets dark, it's the kind of fantasy dark that hits you in the gut, leaves you shocked and amused, it's some of the best Final Fantasy IX fanfiction stuff I have seen in years. I recommend this fic for those who enjoy a fun adventure with some political drama inspired by Game of Thrones. Rated Teen for violence.

104* ''Comments'': Set three years following the events of the game, but before the ending cinematic. Slightly AU because the author misremembered certain plot points from the game; as a result, Cleyra is merely damaged instead of being completely destroyed by Odin, and the mystic gem enchanting the Wind Harp is never recovered. Freya and Fratley go on a journey to find a suitable replacement, and in the process, become re-acquainted with each other. ''Duty and Honor'' provides the framing for the tale, while ''Courage and Strength'', which is significantly longer, covers the quest itself. Occasional hints of PurpleProse, but still very well-written, with an ending that's a guaranteed TearJerker. Gore warning for ''Courage and Strength'', which includes some pretty graphic descriptions of monsters dying.

110* ''Synopsis'': A princess, a thief, and a look into the building of a tumultuous relationship.
111* ''Comments'': A SliceOfLife AdaptationExpansion that focuses on Zidane and Garnet's relationship, set against the backdrop of the canon storyline. Doesn't really have much of a plot, but it does have 300% of your daily recommended fluff intake (where appropriate; some of the chapters take place during Garnet's HeroicBSOD, and those are a bit more angsty). Also gets big points for ''nailing'' Zidane's LovableRogue / HandsomeLech personality; the back-and-forth banter between him and Garnet is probably the most entertaining part of this story.

120** Seconding the rec. It's a very heartwarming portrayal of how the two grow closer to each other throughout their journey, but it's the attentiveness the author devotes to ''all'' the characterization that really made the fic shine for me. Things like [[spoiler: Steiner knocking Zidane down with a punch after a not-so-hilarious misunderstanding]] seem so fitting that you wonder why it wasn't in the game in the first place. Definitely worth your time, and what's more, it's complete, with a sequel-in-progress that's shaping up beautifully.

128* ''Comments'': Yes, I did not make that up: it's Zidane/Freya. However, the fic doesn't focus on the "lol hot furry pron" aspect, but instead builds a pseudo-romantic relationship between the two characters in a bunch of scenes taking place among the events of the game. The sex scene in the last chapter, despite being well done, isn't that long or in-your-face. While the fic doesn't exactly follow the canon, it's definitely not CanonDefilement either. Also, it's damn funny and sometimes dramatic too.

Steiner is forced to grow, Cid IX ponders. Steam engines impress and confound those they serve. A war orphan attempts to right several wrongs. Complex ethical questions regarding the recent conflict, mist, technology, memory and nature fill the world. - A continuation of Final Fantasy 9.
151* ''Comments'' : A moving story whose main focus is, as the author says in the first note, 'the loose ends not tied up that do not sit right with me.' The writing is at times flowery and poetic, shifting to raw and crude depictions of violence, be it emotional or physical. We get to dwell into the character's thoughts in regards to the world's happenings and themselves in relation to it, as well as how they deal with their personal tragedies compared to an even higher tragic event. One good example is Sir Fratley stricken by his amnesia, unable to remember anything that happened in the past, including his own identity; and Freya, devastated by the loss of many, feeling deep inside that she could have done the difference. The story is rated Mature for featuring some explicit scenes, so be warned. 159* ''Comments'' : Perhaps the longest Final Fantasy IX fic I have ever read, with an amazing quantity of 138 chapters(!) and with more than 700,000 words written(!!) over a decade(!!!), this is a beautiful story and I had a lot of fun reading it so far. The writing style evolves as the story progresses, from elegant poetry to humorous fluffy; to depressing as hell with a sort of hope. The relationship between Zidane Tribal and Garnet Til Alexandros XVI is wonderfully written, both have a good chemistry with one another and stay true to their characters. Not only the main pairing is the highlight, but that includes as well the author's massive dedication to his work. Truly inspiring, a must read alongside CrimsonCobwebs's stuff.
