->''Surviving in the 78th district of South Rukongai was tough. When you were a ten-year-old girl with a baby to take care of, it was even harder. Getting reincarnated as Kuchiki Hisana after dying of cancer was never part of the plan.''

Doctor Christina Dalton dies of cancer and is reborn in Japan, a little over a hundred and fifty years before Kurosaki Ichigo would meet Kuchiki Rukia and become a Shinigami to defend his family. Yukimura Hisana, who in one world would become Kuchiki Hisana before dying of illness, is born with enough spiritual power to see souls and hollows as well as fuzzy memories of maybe the first two or three Bleach arcs. The same year her younger sister a Rukia is born, when Hisana is ten years old, a tsunami strikes their village and Hisana wakes up in the 78th district of South Rukongai with a baby to take care of.\

''Walk Two Lifetimes'' has a companion fic in the form of a collection of extra scenes and snippets going by the title ''Sidewalks'', on both [[https://archiveofourown.org/works/13362279/chapters/30597750 AO3]] and [[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11737826/1/Sidewalks FF.net]].

* AlmightyJanitor:
** Hisana grows into this over time in Seireitei, [[spoiler:being an Academy student and an intern in the 4th Division with the duties and influence of a Lieutenant.]]
** [[spoiler:It comes to an end in Chapter 35, when Unohana officially makes Hisana her Lieutenant.]]
* AnnoyingPatient:
** Hisana has to deal with a lot of these during her [[spoiler:internship in the Fourth Division, as Unohana intentionally assigned her the difficult patients]]. They don’t keep their attitude long if Hisana has to deal with them.
** Ironically, Hisana is one herself, as she always tries to leave before being allowed and insists she is fine.
* TheApprentice: Miwa, to Hisana.

--->[[spoiler:It was only later that [Gin] realized it had addressed him by ''-san'' instead of ''-sama.'']]
* BerserkButton:
** Do not insult or disrespect the medical profession in front of Hisana, and hurting her family is a surefire way to earn her animosity, especially if you hurt Rukia.
** Do not insult Hisana in Byakuya's hearing.
** [[spoiler:The Visored become this for Rukia and Byakuya, following Hisana's death.]]
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Hisana, in spades. Gin even notes, she can be just as ruthless as him.
* BigBrotherInstinct:
** Hisana has a big ''sister'' instinct towards Rukia and Renji, most notably.
** Kaori, Kazuki, and Mitsuo also displays this protective instinct towards their family.

'''Hisana:''' No, sir.\
'''Tsukabishi:''' You reek of alcohol, girl.\
'''Hisana:''' It makes an effective mosquito repellent, sir.\
'''Tsukabishi:''' A mosquito repellent. And him?\
'''Hisana:''' There are a lot of mosquitoes after him, sir.\
'''Tsukabishi:''' And the clothes aren’t enough of a deterrent?\
'''Hisana:''' They are very determined bugs, sir.\
'''Tsukabishi:''' So they are.
** [[ExactWords Technically]], she ''is'' truthfull as she used kido to rapidly break down any alcohol in their blood just before their superiors showed up. So they're not drunk.
* BlueBlood: The Kuchiki, which causes problems when Byakuya starts courting Hisana.
* BreakThemByTalking: While Gin is the one who does this for fun when he’s not just messing with people, Hisana also has quite a few instances to do this although with a different intention.
* BrokenBird: Chiyo had become this when Hisana meets her [[spoiler:as one of Akiyama's prisoners]].
* BunniesForCuteness: Rukia has a noticeable love for bunnies, including having pet bunnies.

** [[spoiler:The Kuchiki plaque that Hisana receives as Byakuya's fiancee doubles as a key to their personal Seikamon. Hisana gives it to Yoruichi in case she needs to rescue the Visored.]]
** [[spoiler:The walkie-talkie[=/=]cellphone. Hisana used it to record Gin and Aizen's attack on her, Aizen's confession about the experiments and the plan to frame the Visored, and send the massage to Urahara's phone. Too bad it was left somewhere in 12th Division labs... ]]
* ChekhovsSkill: During Chapter 15, Hisana reads a book about inner worlds, mentioning exercises that allow a person to alter them. Come Chapter 36, [[spoiler:she's able to completely take over Khimaira's mind and kill them without anyone noticing]].
* CombatMedic: Hisana is the main example of this as the main character, but she is not the only one.
** [[spoiler:In fact, her influence means that some members of 4th Division decide to improve their combat skills. And even ask 11th to train them.]]
* CombatPragmatist:

* {{Determinator}}: Hisana, in spades. Best shown in Chapter 36.

* DissonantSerenity: Gin. Unohana. Aizen. Hisana.
* DoubleMeaning: Hisana's conversations with Aizen, most obviously during their chess game.
--> '''Hisana:''' I don’t know if I’ll ever beat you. But you don’t know that I won’t.\
'''Aizen:''' That’s true, you may surprise me. You already have. Either way, I look forward to our game.\
'''Hisana:''' As do I. I hope that when the time comes, Aizen-fukutaicho, I prove a worthy opponent.
* DontSneakUpOnMeLikeThat: Hiro almost guts his mother when she startled him, and draws a blade on Hisana for the same reason.
* DramaticIrony: Oh yes.
** It takes Hisana long time to realise she's friends with Matsumoto Rangiku. In turn, Rangiku has no idea that "Yuki-chan" is the Yukimura Hisana from 4th Division.
** Rankigu thinks that Hisana would get along great with that one friend of hers.
** Gin has no idea that Hisana and Rangiku even know each other.

** Rose is one as well, even prefering Western instruments over traditional Japanese ones.
* EmbarrassingNickname: Byakuya-hime.
* EmbarrassingRescue: [[spoiler:Hisana's rescue by Gin and then carried back to Soul Society by him in chapter 21.]]

* FaceDeathWithDignity: [[spoiler:Akiyama. Hisana's second death.]]
* FamedInStory: Hisana, the Angel of Inuzuri, was famous in as well as the darling of Inuzuri District.
* FatalFlaw: Hisana has two: her devotion to people and her low self-esteem.
** The first one means that she ''always'' tries to help others, even when it's not really her business and to the point of harming herself and actually risking her life.
** Her inability to see how much people value her means that she's unintentionally hurting them, either because they worry about her (Byakuya) or because they feel overshadowed by her (Rukia, Isane).
** [[spoiler:Comes to head during the Visored crisis. Hisana gets involved in trying to save their lives (despite ''knowing'' that Yoruichi wouldn't actually let them be executed), which puts her on Aizen's radar. Then she's killed and her death is blamed on Kaien, turning her into a martyr and ensuring that the exiles would be hunted down with extreme prejudice.]]

* FoodAsBribe: [[spoiler:Hisana uses quality fish to try and capture a talking black cat for Kaien.]] Gin tries to bribe Hisana with persimmons to help him with some tasks at 5th Division. Hisana once bribed Urahara with steak.

* ForceFeeding: [[spoiler:Akiyama threatened with it when Hisana informed him the Shinigami he held captive wasn’t eating.]]
* {{Foreshadowing}}:
** When Hisana is in coma, Ganjo asks if she will sleep for 100 years like in the story. She doesn't [[spoiler:but once Aizen feeds her to a Hollow, she ends up trapped for a century in its inner world]].
** In the same chapter Aizen muses that Hisana seems to have made many friends and became dear to many people. [[spoiler:He uses this to turn the Gotei 13 against the Visored, by killing her and framing Kaien for her death.]]
* ForWantOfANail: Hisana causes more than a few ripples in this fashion.
** Hisana never leaves Rukia, meaning that the girl grows with a family that cares for her and not on the streets. Later on, Renji also joins them.
** Hisana and Byakuya (probably) meet under different circumstances than in canon.
** The Shinigami Women Association is created by Hisana earlier than in canon as much more... respectable group, [[spoiler:in part also as a support group for them to deal with various traumas]].
** [[spoiler:Treating Ukitake means that Kaien is less worried about his health, so ''he'' goes as reinforcements instead of Lisa and is turned into a Visored.]]
** [[spoiler:Aizen killing Hisana and framing Kaien turns her into a martyr and makes sure that the entire Soul Society wants to kill the Visored, Tessai, Urahara and Yoruichi.]]
*** [[spoiler:All the convicts need to go into deep hiding, using reiatsu supressors and gigai. At the same time, Gotei 13 is actively hunting them, leading to multiple skirmishes between both parties.]]
** [[spoiler:Since Kaien became a Visored, he and Miyako never got married, instead falling apart when he escaped.]]
** [[spoiler:When Isshin defects, he gets a gigai that alters his appearance to improve his chances of hiding from Gotei 13.]]
*** [[spoiler:After Masaki dies, the Hogyoku is sealed in '''Ichigo''' to drain his powers, while Isshin leaves to work as travelling doctor so his returning reiatsu doesn't draw anyone to his family.]]
** Lot of people end up in completely different Divisions than in canon, including: Rukia in 2nd, Renji in 11th, Rangiku in 6th and Nanao in 10th. Also, Isane never becomes a lieutenant.
* FrameUp: [[spoiler:Aizen framed Kaien for Hisana's death.]]

* GiantWallOfWateryDoom: The cause of Hisana and Rukia's death, along with the rest of their village.
* [[BoyfriendBluff Girlfriend Bluff]]: When a guy who cannot take a no starts hitting on Hisana in a bar, a woman appears, pretending to be her girlfriend. Hisana plays along and after he leaves, she strikes up a friendship with the woman who turns out to be Matsumoto Rangiku, there to celebrate her promotion with Gin - who never showed up.
* GoshDangItToHeck: Shirai curses by using food.
--> '''Shirai:''' Soggy biscuits! Cold pea soup! Sour prunes!
* GradeSkipper: Implied with both Rukia and Renji, who graduated in three years.
* GroinAttack: Hisana at ten years old manipulating a Rukongai citizen into a position to do this to him and knock him out with a brick to steal his possessions was what drew Tatsuya's attention to her.
* GutPunch: [[spoiler:Hisana's death, and everything connected to it.]]
* HealingFactor: Hisana's Shikai grants her a really potent one, even allowing her to heal lethal wounds.
** [[spoiler:Later, it becomes one of Khimaira's main abilities.]]
** GoodThingYouCanHeal: [[spoiler:Hisana would be dead several times over if she had not activated her Shikai and had her Shikai not granted her a potent HealingFactor.]]
* HealingHands: Healing Kido, duh.
** Hisana's healing technique is a subversion as she uses a complex cellural manipulation to accomplish the same effect.
* HeightAngst: Downplayed. Hisana really wishes she was taller, and is often teased about her height.
* [[SheIsNotMyGirlfriend He Is Not My Boyfriend]]: Hisana has to correct people on this in regards of her and Byakuya enough that in her narration she thinks she could recite the speech in her sleep.
* HellholePrison: [[spoiler:Where Eiji, Hiro, and Chiyo was kept under Akiyamas care.]]
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler:Tenshi no Tsubasa sacrificing herself so that Hisana can survive in Khimaira's soulscape.]]

* HorrorHunger: [[spoiler:Hisana develops one of these after being fed to Khimaira.]]
* ImpliedDeathThreat:
** Hisana sometimes gives them to people that annoy her, such as reminding her patients that she knows several ways to get rid of a corpse without a trace left.
** Gin delivers one to [[spoiler:Rukia, after Hisana's rescue of her sister lands her in a coma. She either gets stronger soon or she might have an accident]].
--> '''Gin:''' To toughen [people like Hisana], all you have to do find the weak spots in a person’s life and remove them. Either by ironing them out so that they’re as strong as the rest of the soul or, if need be, by cutting them out entirely. Either way, any weaknesses should be eliminated. Don’t you agree, [[spoiler:Rukia-chan]]?
* ImpossibleTask: Kaien sets one for Hisana - to catch a talking black cat with the promise of a pet pig and getting his sister to teach her to make fireworks if she does. Since she knows the cat is actually captain Shihuin Yoruichi a.k.a. the Goddess of Flash, her chances are nearly nil. [[spoiler:She actually manages to succeed after Byakuya walked up on her alongside Yoruichi, who thought her set-up was hilarious.]]
* ImStandingRightHere: A few times.
--> '''Rukia:''' Nee-chan, you’re ''friends'' with this guy?\
'''Hisana:''' I know. I can’t believe it either.\
'''Ikkaku:''' Oi! I’m still here!\
'''Hisana:''' I’m aware.\
'''Rukia:''' Your point?
* IncurableCoughOfDeath: With the death part being subverted and the incurable cough being justified. Ukitake as per canon, [[spoiler:with Hisana eventually pinning it down as an autoimmune disorder caused (probably) by genetic defect and devising a treatment method to mitigate symptoms]].
* InSpiteOfANail: Despite all changes Hisana brought with her, some things stay constant.
** Hisana and Byakuya hook up, [[spoiler:though this time she dies before a wedding]].
** [[spoiler:Aizen still created the Visored, framed Urahara and Tessai, and forced them to flee from Soul Society.]]
** Rukia and Renji had a falling-out though not as severe as in canon.
** Isshin leaves for Human World, marries Masaki and has his canon kids.
* InsultOfEndearment: Rukia and Renji calls Byakuya “Oni-sensei”.
* InTheBack: [[spoiler:Gin stabs Hisana in the back with his Bankai while she's distracted by Aizen.]]
* InvisibleToNormals: Ghosts, Shinigami, and Hollows alike.
* IThoughtEveryoneCouldDoThat: Hisana has no idea not everyone can treat Captains and Lieutenants or even highly seated officers as if they were equal, especially not when you are an Academy student.
* ItsPersonal: [[spoiler:The hunt for the Visored, Urahara, Tessai and Yoruichi became personal for a large part of the high-ranking Shinigami after Hisana's death.]]
* IWarnedYou: [[spoiler:Gin tried to warn Hisana away from trying to save the Visored.]]
--> '''[[spoiler:Gin:]]''' I tried to warn you.\
'''[[spoiler:Hisana:]]''' I know.
* IWantGrandkids: Byakuya's grandmother continually tries to set Byakuya up with noble girls in hope he finds a future wife to give her great-grandchildren with.
* IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy: Hisana in regards of Byakuya.
--> '''Hisana:''' Love him, like him, care for him—it doesn’t matter. They’re just labels. I want him to be happy, that’s all. And if he’s happy with me being his friend, that’s what I’ll be.
* IfYouEverDoAnythingToHurtHer: Rukia gives a non-romantic version of this to Kaien when [[spoiler:he is to bring Hisana to Seireitei]].
* JerkassHasAPoint:
** Masami when she points out to Byakuya that Hisana will not be accepted by nobility as the next Lady Kuchiki due to her background.
** When Gin says that Hisana is a lot more ruthless than she likes to pretend. He's also right that Rukia needs to shape up or Hisana will get hurt trying to protect her.
* KingIncognito: Byakuya tries to pull this off during his first visit to Hisana, but his body language, speech patterns and that he hides his sword gives him away instantly.
* LateArrivalSpoiler: It's hard to discuss later developments without mentioning that Hisana went to Seireitei to become a Shinigami.
* LetUsNeverSpeakOfThisAgain:
** Byakuya doesn't want to talk about his second meeting with Hisana.
** Hisana ended up demanding that those who knew [[spoiler:how she ended up succeeding Kaien's ImpossibleTask]].
** A completely serious example, Hiro tells Rukia that [[spoiler:the fact she was the one who (accidentally) brought the Hollow bait outside of the Twelfth Division, which led to it being activated, stays between them.]]
* LikeBrotherAndSister: Hisana and Kaien.
* LockedUpAndLeftBehind: Hanataro was a victim of this kind of prank, causing him and Hisana to miss [[spoiler:Aizen's]] demonstration as Hisana picked the lock to help him out.
* LoveEpiphany:
** Hisana has one of these, or rather a “crush epiphany”, as she practices sensing reiatsu with Byakuya.
** Byakuya has one of these much later, when Gin decides to take the opportunity to troll him and Hisana in one go.
* LoveInformant: Hisana learns that Byakuya [[spoiler:wants to convince his clan to allow him to court her]] from Kaien, who was unaware that he had yet to tell her.
* MadScientist: Akiyama, Urahara, Kurotsuchi, even Aizen has shades of it.
* MagneticHero: Hisana, something which Aizen lampshades [[spoiler:as he prepares to kill her and turn her into a martyr]].
* ManipulativeBastard: Aizen, Gin, and Urahara, all with different goals and intentions.
* MasterActor: Aizen, but Hisana also has her moments.
* TheMedic: Hisana, Miwa, Unohana, Iemura, and the entirety of the 4th Division.
* MeaningfulName: Khimaira is a transliteration of Chimera, the monster which famously was a combination of several different animals and had a fire breath. [[spoiler:Aizen makes this Hollow from thousands of other Hollows, Shinigami, Pluses and even animal souls, with the dominant one belonging to Hisana who has a fire motif.]]
* MentalWorld: Every Shinigami has an inner world, [[spoiler:as do Hollows, and Hisana survives in Khimaira's mind for a century as she prepares to usurp control of their body.]]
* MetaphoricallyTrue: Hisana uses these kind of lies [[spoiler:both to avoid Aizen catching onto her being onto him,]] to explain how she knows things without giving away her reincarnation or to mess with people.
* MomentKiller: Hisana's family, including Hisana, have a habit of vetting/scaring off potential love interests of the others before it gets anywhere. This includes Hisana introducing herself with her hands still dripping with blood from surgery, Kaori chasing Kazuki around with an axe, Rukia throwing her least behaved rabbit at a girlfriend that was allergic to rabbits, and several of them volunteering to make food and making the love interests food absolutely terrible.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: [[spoiler:Rukia when she realizes she was the reason the Hollow bait was outside of the 12th Division lab and allowed for the accident that had it activated, leading to Hisana ending up in a coma.]]
* MyGreatestFailure: Early on, Hisana is driven to improve as a healer after failing to save [[spoiler:Tatsuya and Horio]].
* NauseaFuel: InUniverse. Upon finding Tsukuda Ayame crying after being harassed by a patient, Hisana takes over and makes him a cake that looks like his head but bleeding from every orifice and makes a wet squelching sound when Hisana cuts into it. He and his friends ended up shell-shocked, horrified, and/or looking like they were going to be sick.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: [[spoiler:Hisana tries to help the Visored and sway the Seireitei in their favour. When she's killed and Kaien is framed, it destroys any goodwill the Visored had and ensures the Gotei 13 wants to hunt them down.]]
* NoodleIncident: There are noodle incidents aplenty mentioned in the main story, some of which are expanded on in ''Sidewalks.''
** The time one of the girls Tatsuya was flirting with turned out to be a cross-dressing man in disguise.
** Whatever had Hisana use up all the Fourth Division's wasabi, which in ''Sidewalks'' is revealed to be tricking at least one Eleventh Division Shinigami to eat a mouthful of it.
** The tranquilizer incident that had Iemura actually ban Hisana from having Gin as her patient, though it gets explained in ''Sidewalks''.
** The time Hisana accidentally-on-purpose set Matsushita-sensei on fire for slapping Isane, getting herself banned from Kido classes.
** The time Hisana set off fireworks inside of Kukaku's house.
** The time Rukia and Renji set loose a bunch of black cats in the Academy the day Yoruichi was supposed to visit.
** Apparently Hisana "accidentally" put itching powder in Kurotsuchi's make-up kit.
* NotAMorningPerson: Renji.
* NotDistractedByTheSexy: Hisana, due to being a healer and an asexual.
* NothingIsTheSameAnymore: Chapters 35 and 36. Up to this point we followed Hisana's life in Soul Society. [[spoiler:After she is killed by Gin and Aizen, we end up following a number of people in all three worlds, and our protagonist tries to piece back their shattered mind while slowly turning into a soul-devouring monster.]]
