''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12944540/1/Unity Unity]]'' is a FusionFic crossover between multiple animated franchises by Creator/{{Finmonster}} and a sequel to ''Fanfic/{{Empathy}}''. Currently unfinished, with the last chapter having been published in August, 2023.

Taking place a few months after the first story, Big Hero 9 find themselves being drawn into the larger superhero community, while dealing with a new, mysterious foe.

----
!!''Unity'' provides examples of:

* EightiesHair: Elastigirl apparently went through a phase where she had a mohawk.
* AdaptationalAngstUpgrade: For a few characters
** Tip, despite being the most level-headed and confident member of the group (seconded only by Go-Go), begins to have doubts about her role on the team (as she doesn't have superpowers or incredible intelligence). This starts after she's pulled from the van (her only true weapon) during the fight at the jail and is almost strangled by the Underminer.
** Megamind has a ''lot'' of guilt about the incident with Titan, and he makes it clear that he's doing everything he can to make up for it. Margo in particular won't let him forget it, as Titan's rampage through Metro City left her orphaned.
* AdaptationExpansion:
** The story expands on the backstories of Bob and Helen in Chapter 27, particularly how each of them gained their powers.
** Mirage's backstory, especially her reason for wanting to bring about the end of the Supers, is explained.
** Dr. Cockroach's backstory is shown halfway through the fic, such as his romance with his partner, George.
* AdaptationalOriginConnection: Scarlet Overkill was the villain who killed Lucy's parents.
* AIIsACrapshoot:
** While Baymax's programming is usually an aversion, it's when Hiro tries to install emotions into him using a chip (thinking it will help him empathize with patients) do things go pear-shaped. While the emotions are real enough for Riley to detect, they're so primitive and lacking in complexity that [[MoodSwinger Baymax switches from one extreme to the next]] (from laughing madly to weeping non-existent tears to attempts at vomiting uncontrollably).
** [[spoiler:Phantasma]] is loyal to [[BigBad Enigma]], and considers helping people like Baymax does illogical. They even try to forcibly reprogram the latter to their way of thinking.
* AllLovingHero: Even after Phantasma damaged Baymax and tried to rewrite his code (effectively destroying him), Baymax doesn't want Hiro put anything in his code that would hurt her should she try that again, asking Hiro how he would have felt if Baymax's personality chip had been destroyed in the Gorg ship.
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer:
** Megamind was an outcast among most of the villain community due to his refusal to kill. Gru, who had similar moral scruples to murder, was the only exception.
** {{Averted|Trope}} when he joins the AVL's hero team, where he's accepted by almost everyone. The only exceptions are Lucy and Mr. Incredible, due to their belief he killed Metro Man, but that ends when the truth comes out.
* AllYourPowersCombined: Enigma has equipped himself with knockoffs of Big Hero 9's gear.
* AnachronismStew: While ''Big Hero 6'', ''Inside Out'', ''Home'', ''Megamind'', and ''Despicable Me'' all take place (ostensibly) in modern day (somewhere around 2010-2015), ''Monsters Vs Aliens'' was implied to take place in the year 2000, while ''The Incredibles'' supposedly happened in the ''early 1960s''.
* AppropriatedAppellation: Upon seeing Enigma's LegionOfDoom, Fred calls it a "secret supervillain syndicate". Enigma notes that "Syndicate" is a fitting term and adopts it.
* ArbitrarySkepticism: Discussed by Riley's therapist Dr. Freeman, who notes that in a world of supers, she has no reason to doubt Riley's claims that she has powers.
* ArtificialLimbs: Enigma has a robotic right arm.
* TheAtoner:
** Part of Megamind's motivation for his hero turn is to atone for all the people who were killed by Titan during his rampage.
** This is Mirage's motivation as well.
* AutobotsRockOut: Big Hero 9 make sure to play music while fighting crime.
* BadassLongcoat: Violet has one as part of her new Ultraviolet costume.
* BadassNormal: Besides everyone on the Big Hero 9 team who isn't Oh, Baymax, or Riley, Fred's dad was a superhero in the days before the ban even without any powers, which always made Bob think he was a little crazy.
* BadLiar: Fred, when trying to quickly come up with an excuse to get Violet out of the lab when he needs to grab his gear. She's not fooled for a second.
* BareMidriffsAreFeminine: Violet's outfit for the girl's night is described as doing this, and she's the youngest and girliest on the group.
* BattleCouple:
** Hiro and Riley.
** Gogo and Wasabi.
** Fred and Violet.
** During the bar fight, Susan and Honey Lemon act like one.
** Mr. Incredible and Elastigirl
* BarBrawl: The girls night out turns into one of these when some drunk frat boys start harassing Susan and Honey, with them fighting back and [=GoGo=] and Violet coming to their defense.
* BatmanColdOpen: The first chapter is the Big Hero 9 team intercepting and apprehending some bank robbers. It's actually [[LampshadeHanging titled]] "Cold Open".
* BatmanGambit: Yama attacks [=KreiTech=] knowing that the heroes will intervene and arrest him, putting him in the same prison as Callaghan, which is what Enigma wants.
* {{BFG}}: When attacking [=KreiTech=], Yama uses a gun almost as long as he is ''tall''. And it fires explosive so powerful that the backlash hurts Violet through her force-fields as it disrupts them.
* BigBad: A shadowy figure known as Enigma serves as the main villain.
* BigDamnHeroes: The AVL hero team, having been called by Stan, arrive just in time to save Big Hero 9 from the Syndicate.
* TheBigDamnKiss: Susan gives one to Honey in Chapter 12.
* BlessedWithSuck: Riley has gotten much better control over her powers, and her status as the team's only super makes her one of their most valuable members. Unfortunately, her powers also make her more susceptible to trauma (as seen in the previous story) and psychic attacks (with it being heavily implied that, had B.O.B. not cut off Mezmerella's psych attack, she might've been driven insane).
* BothSidesHaveAPoint: When preparing Fred's suit for the SAR mission, Hiro tells Fred that it's not a good idea to go into battle when your emotions are a mess (a CallBack to the prior story, where Hiro went after Yokai while still upset both about Tadashi's death and Riley leaving the team (with Tip). Fred counteracts that Helen and Violet clearly aren't in a good place emotionally either, but that they're going and he's going to help/support them.
* BrickJoke: In ''Empathy'', the rest of the group was skeptical about Fred's claims that something happened to the Moon. When Honey learns the truth here, she notes that she owes him an apology.
* BrokenPedestal:
** Metro Man to Bob. Bob's anger at Megamind quickly transfers to Wayne after learning the latter faked his death to become a singer. As he puts it, the latter essentially ditched his city and left it at Megamind's mercy because he was in the midst of a "mid-life crisis". The pedestal is broken enough to the point where Bob actually ''wishes'' Megamind killed Metro Man. When Big Hero 9 hears about this from Violet, their reactions aren't as extreme, but they are just as disappointed as Bob is (especially Fred, who's easily the biggest superhero lover of the group).
** An inverted example with Dr. Cockroach and Robert Callahan. Before he accidentally turned himself into a monster, he (as Vincent Delambre) was a mentor to Professor Callaghan, and expresses disappointment that his former student became Yokai.
* ButForMeItWasTuesday: The Big Hero 9 have gotten so used to aliens, superheroes, robots, and other forms of insanity that there isn't much that surprises them anymore. Tip [[LampshadeHanging lampshades]] this when she and Riley are brought into Gru's lab. The same goes for Gru's daughters; living with a supervillain has made it so that there isn't much that phases them.
* CallingTheOldManOut:
** Abigail does this to her father in Chapter 9 when visiting him in jail, calling him out for using her as an excuse for his actions in the previous story.
** When [[spoiler: an undercover Gru and Agent Wilde kidnap Jack-Jack for Enigma, the Parr family loses it, with Bob in particular looking like he's seconds away from strangling Monger, Ramsbottom, and Dicker. They essentially call out the three heads of the program for not keeping better track of Gru or Wilde or setting up a form of communication.]]
* CallingYourAttacks: Fred still has a habit of doing this.
* CanonDiscontinuity: The story more or less ignores ''WesternAnimation/Incredibles2'', the ''WesternAnimation/MonstersVsAliens2013'' tv series, and ''WesternAnimation/BigHero6TheSeries'' in favor of creating its own narrative, though it does occasionally utilize elements of them, like Susan still being a SizeShifter (albeit via a device Doctor Cockroach invented rather than an alien substance), Mirage having elements of Evelyn Deavor's backstory, and Hiro's system of delivering Big Hero 9's costumes, as a few examples.
* CanonWelding:
** Doctor Cockroach went to SFIT.
** Megamind is a fan of Cockroach's and an old foe of Mr. Incredible's.
** Mr. Incredible has apparently worked with General Monger in the past.
** Dr. Nefario and Fred's dad were both inadvertently involved in Mirage's StartOfDarkness.
*** Before his own StartOfDarkness, Dr. Nefario worked for Stan.
** Megamind and Gru teamed up a few times.
** It's implied by a nightmare she has that Margo lost her parents to Titan's actions, which is later confirmed.
** Elastigirl has apparently fought El Macho several times at some point in the past.
** It's implied that Dr. Cockroach and Prof. Callaghan were colleagues back when the former was still human. It's later confirmed that the latter was the former's protégé.
** It's implied that Syndrome's zero-point energy beam was based on an old invention of Dr. Nefario's.
** Doctor Cockroach used Dr. Nefario's data on the shrink ray to allow Susan to change sizes.
** Doctor Cockroach's gene resequencer, or at least a machine based on the original device, was used to give Bob his superhuman strength.
** Gru is stated to be one of the few [[BadassNormal non-powered villains]] to [[OffscreenMomentOfAwesome evade Metro Man.]]
* CardCarryingVillain: Lucy notes how on the nose the term "Bank of Evil" is. Gru counters that some villains like to be upfront about this sort of thing.
* CastHerd: Due to the sheer amount of characters involved in the fic (which contains characters and settings from ''seven'' different films), this is in effect. Justified, as the AVL's entire team consists of over twenty people (not counting their agents or the characters from Despicable Me).
* CatapultNightmare: Margo has one of what is later confirmed to be Titan when he was destroying Metro City.
* CerebusRetcon: In ''Megamind'', the destruction Titan caused to Metro City was glossed over after his defeat. Here, it's made clear that he ''did'' cause the deaths of many people during his rampage, something Megamind feels guilt over. It's eventually confirmed that Margo was orphaned by that same rampage.
** Dr. Nefario's dislike of the girls is given a more somber light here, since he lost his own son in his StartOfDarkness.
** While Vector being stranded on the moon was a funny scene in the film, here he reportedly asphyxiated there, [[spoiler:leading to his father joining Enigma for revenge on Gru.]]
* ClickHello: How Megamind introduces himself before shooting/stunning Enigma and saving Hiro.
* {{Cliffhanger}}: [[spoiler: Chapter 30 ends with Kaiju making a HeroicSacrifice so that Ultraviolet and the others can get away.]]
* ClosetKey: Honey is this to Susan, who's apparently never been attracted to a woman before.
* ComesGreatResponsibility:
** Bob believes in this strongly, which is why he's so unhappy to learn that Metro Man faked his death to become a singer of all things.
** Hiro and Megamind [[LampshadeHanging discuss this]] while repairing Baymax.
* ContrivedCoincidence: Riley and Abigail have the same therapist, and Riley runs into her leaving an appointment right before her own. Abigail even lampshades it.
* CostumeEvolution: Now that she's branching out as an independent hero separate from the rest of her family, Violet has upgraded her costume. It's now purple instead of red, with a V insignia instead of an I, and is covered with a coat.
* CrazyPrepared: Hiro made backups of some of the team's gear, which Honey Lemon had secretly been treating and augmenting with chemicals to prepare for situations that they might face.
* CriticalStaffingShortage: The AVL hasn't been looking too hard at Big Hero 9's civilian identities because they simply don't have the time and personnel to spare.
* CurbStompBattle:
** The opening fight between the Big Hero 9 and the bank robbers. The Big Hero 9 walks away without a scratch.
** The fight between the heroines and the frat boys harassing them at the nightclub. As it's a case of two superpowered people and two {{badass normal}}s against a bunch of totally average drunken assholes, it's not hard to tell who ends up winning.
** The villains of the Syndicate have no problem overwhelming the Big Hero 9, due to having much more combat experience than them. When the similarly experienced heroes from the AVL show up, the tables turn rather quickly.
** Riley intervenes when some bully girls are attacking Margo, and even without her gear, she defeats them effortlessly, only using her powers at the end to fill them with enough fear to get them to back off.
* DeathByAdaptation: Vector was left stranded on the moon, but alive at the end of the ''Despicable Me'' movie. Here he reportedly died of asphyxiation when his oxygen ran out, [[spoiler:leading to his father joining Enigma to get revenge on Gru for his death.]]
* DidntThinkThisThrough: Bob points out that this was part of the problem in Metro Man's plan to fake his death. Because of his almost comical rivalry with Megamind, he never fully understood how dangerous villains could be, and thus didn't stop to think that innocent people could get hurt without him around to save them.
* DiscontinuityNod: Edith thinks that the Minions are mutated corn, which was their canonical origin before ''WesternAnimation/{{Minions}}'' revised things.
* DramaticIrony:
** After an embarrassing first encounter, Fred figures that Violet won't want anything to do with him. Except she takes a good look at him and the others and starts to figure out they're the Big Hero 9, whom she's been ordered to investigate.
** Hiro and Fred's dad are concerned that the AVL might be aware of Big Hero 9's secret identities and are planning on tracking them down to arrest them for violating the Super Relocation Act. Except the ending of the last story reveals that the AVL is planning on ''recruiting'' them, and other heroes. Also, Fred's dad's line about the AVL having the most sophisticated equipment around is undercut by the next scene showing Agent Dicker struggling with an old out-dated computer.
* DudeNotFunny: When it's addressed that many supervillains use volcanoes as lairs to make themselves look more threatening, Megamind smirks and looks proud...only to see several people glaring at him. He quickly refocuses on the mission.
* DynamicEntry: Fred announces it as such when he bursts in through [=KreiTech's=] doors to confront Yama's goons. Megamind is also fond of these (since he's all about [[BigEntrance presentation]]).
* ElaborateUndergroundBase: The base which the AVL uses for its superhero team is a large underground bunker.
* EvenEvilHasStandards:
** Even ''before'' his HeelFaceTurn, Megamind never killed anyone. In fact, the thought of murder disgusts him, and the deaths Titan was causing in his rampage are partly why Megamind opposed him in the end. This made Megamind an outcast in the villain community, and in hindsight, was one of the first signs that he wasn't really evil. He ''did'' put Metro Man into death traps all the time, but he never actually thought that they might ''work''.
** Gru held to the same standards when he was a villain, which is why he was one of the few villains willing to work with Megamind. Even after becoming a hero, Megamind still thinks highly of him.
** Averted with the Syndicate, who know that three of the Big Hero 9's members are ''literal children'', but try to kill them anyway.
* EveryoneHasStandards:
** While [=GoGo=] has no qualms in sneaking 18-year-old Violet into a nightclub for Girls' Night, she draws the line at bringing 12-year-old Riley and Tip there.
** Doctor Cockroach is a MadScientist and is [[OlderThanTheyLook one of the team's oldest members]], yet he finds it appalling that there are scientists his age who believe women don't belong in laboratories.
* EveryoneMeetsEveryone: The fic has several moments of this, with the most notable one being when the Parr family, Frozone, the Monsters, Megamind, and Minion all meet for the first time. Done again when Big Hero 9 joins.
* EvilCounterpart: The members of Enigma's LegionOfDoom seem to largely be the villainous equivalents of Big Hero 9's members, like Honey Lemon and Bomb Voyage.
* ExpectingSomeoneTaller: Mirage says this upon first meeting Susan, who at the time has shrunk herself back to her non-powered size.
* EyeColorChange: When testing the emotion chip, Baymax's eyes change color to the associated color of the emotion he is experiencing, such as red for anger, purple for fear, green for disgusted, yellow for happy, and blue for sad.
* FantasticallyIndifferent: After everything she's seen since becoming friends with Riley and Hiro, Tip admits that there isn't much left that could surprise her.
* FantasticRacism: Violet reveals that her high school boyfriend broke up with her because he couldn't accept her being a Super.
* {{Fangirl}}: [=GoGo=] turns out to be one for Elastigirl.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: When he's arrested and gets his phone call, Yama calls a Mexican restaurant. Specifically, "Salsa and Salsa". A reader who's seen Despicable Me 2 will realize that El Macho is part of Enigma's team before he makes his first appearance.
* {{Foil}}: Mr. Incredible and Metro Man, both being the strongest heroes around, both went through their own mid-life crises, but they completely differ from each other. Metro Man's was due to his growing lack of interest in heroics that lead to him faking his death for rather selfish reasons. Mr. Incredible's was because of his inability to help people without causing problems for the law that led to him taking up vigilantism to commit selfless acts of heroism.
* FreudianExcuse:
** Mirage joined Syndrome's campaign to destroy Supers because her parents were killed in the collateral damage of a fight between Excelsior and Dr. Nefario, with her father heavily insisting that Excelsior would be able to save them.
** When asked by Violet, Fred admits that the reason he goes out of his way to hide that he's rich stems from a childhood of {{Fair Weather Friend}}s and {{Gold Digger}}s that were only interested in him for his wealth, not himself.
* GilliganCut: While at the club, the girls wonder aloud what the guys have planned for the night. The scene then goes to Hiro, Wasabi, Fred, and Oh at Fred's house, with Oh beating the others at a video game.
* GirlsNightOutEpisode: Chapters 11 and 12 have [=GoGo=], Honey, Violet and Susan going out to a nightclub. The only time Hiro and the other male characters show up at all is a quick GilliganCut in the former chapter showing that they're spending the night playing video games.
* GoldDigger: Fred has had a few problems with these kind of people, which is part of why he doesn't make a big deal of how much money he has.
* GoneHorriblyRight: Hiro's attempt to give Baymax emotions works, but completely overwhelms him and makes him go berserk, switching between emotions almost randomly.
* HasAType: Susan apparently likes them tall, ironically enough for someone who is normally almost 50 feet tall.
* HeroesGoneFishing: In Chapters 11 and 12, [=GoGo=] takes Honey Lemon, Violet, and Susan to a club for a night out. Riley and Tip are mentioned having a sleepover (borrowing [[NoodleImplements Baymax]] for some reason), while Hiro, Fred, Wasabi, and Oh have a video game night.
* HoldingOutForAHero: Mirage's hatred for supers that led her to work with Syndrome started when her mother and father died during a fight between Excelsior and Dr. Nefario when she was a child, since her father assumed that Excelsior would save them after he accidentally deflected Nefario's attack into the pier that they were on while her mother wanted to flee, and they died when the pier collapsed completely because he refused to move.
* HollywoodMidLifeCrisis: Bob (not inaccurately) accuses Wayne's "FakingTheDead to become a musician" stunt to be this. He can tell because he's been through one himself already.
* HomeBase:
** Stan's mansion serves as the main base for Big Hero 9, with Stan himself usually being MissionControl.
** The government's joint superhero team is a massive bunker built into a mountain. It's actually called Home Base.
* {{Hypocrite}}: Lucy Wilde is against Megamind being on the team because of his past as a villain, while being friends with Mirage and knowing her past with Syndrome. To be fair, she didn't read the memo that would have let her know that Metro Man pulled a FakingTheDead and that Megamind ''didn't'' kill him.
* IDontWantToRuinOurFriendship: [=GoGo=] says that this is why she spent so long putting off hooking up with Wasabi.
* INeedAFreakingDrink: Invoked but defied. When preparing to tell Bob what really happened to Metro Man, Megamind tells him he might need a drink afterwards. Instead, Bob just gets furious and calls Metro Man out.
* ImmuneToBullets: Susan's increased density when shrunk means that bullets only tickle her in that state. Bob says that for him, they itch.
* InstantlyProvenWrong: PlayedForLaughs. When Megamind, Agent Wilde, Riley, and Tip go to see Gru, Megamind warns them that, while not a villain any more, Gru is still a highly dangerous man. Cue Gru opening the door while wearing a bright pink flour-stained apron and asking them to make the conversation quick because he has cookies in the oven.
* InternalReveal: In Chapter 7, Yama's attack on [=KreiTech=] forces Fred to reveal to Violet that he and his friends are the Big Hero 9. In turn, she reveals her identity as Ultraviolet to him.
* InventionalWisdom: Subverted. When Hiro installs the emotion chip into Baymax, one of the extreme emotions he experiences is disgust and tries to vomit in-spite of physically impossibility. When Riley and Tip asks him why he programmed that into the chip, Hiro insists he didn't.
* ItsAllMyFault:
** Hiro blames himself for the team getting [[CurbStompBattle curbstomped]] by the Syndicate, due to Enigma copying his technology.
** Megamind holds this attitude about his past actions as a villain, especially the incident involving Titan (which Margo is quick to remind him of when she meets him). He even keeps the power defuser he built to empower (and depower) Titan, so he'll never forget what he'd done.
** Fred blames himself for [[spoiler: Jack-Jack's abduction]], and readily volunteers for the mission to the Syndicate's lair as both a means to redeem himself and to be there for Violet.
* JerkassRealization: When Bob points out Metro Man's decision to fake his death indirectly led to people dying, he appears to be shaken by it, perhaps realizing his mistake for the first time. Bob has one as well when he realizes that he's been acting horribly to Megamind because of something he didn't do.
* LegacyCharacter:
** Discussed between Hiro and Stan about how people attributed the name "Excelsior" to him, with Stan assuring Hiro that he's happy to stay in retirement and let Hiro continue heroing under the name.
** Later, Megamind says that if he ever falls in battle, now that he's a hero, Minion can take up his mantle.
** Invoked when Lucy goes undercover as Gru's partner during his infiltration of the Syndicate and takes the name of Scarlet Overkill. As she notes, the original Scarlet is dead, so the name is up for grabs.
* LegionOfDoom: The Syndicate, the organization led by Enigma, is composed of [[OriginalCharacter himself and Phantasma]], as well as several villains from the ''Incredibles'' and ''Despicable Me'' franchises.
* LetsYouAndHimFight: In chapter 14, the Incredibles and Frozone spar against Team Monster, Megamind, and Minion. Mr. Incredible is especially eager to fight Megamind, to the point that, in Chapter 15, the other teams have to stop him from ''continuing'' to fight Megamind.
* LightFeminineAndDarkFeminine: Lucy Wilde and Mirage.
* LikeBrotherAndSister: [=GoGo=] admits that she sees Fred as a "sexual non-entity" similar to "[her] cousin Geon, or a lamp."
* LiteralMinded: Oh still doesn't understand certain figures of speech.
* LockedOutOfTheLoop: Lucy and the assembled heroes don't know that Megamind didn't kill Metro Man and that he's still alive. Granted, it makes sense for the heroes to not know about that, but Dicker and Mirage are surprised that Lucy is completely unaware of it, leading them to assume that she never got that memo. By Chapter 15, everyone's aware.
* LoveAtFirstSight: Fred develops a crush on Violet when he first meets her, to the point that [[OOCIsSeriousBusiness he can't speak]]. His friends tease him for it ''mercilessly''.
* MacGuffinSuperPerson: It turns out that [[spoiler:Enigma wants Jack Jack in order to replicate his incredible powerset.]]
* MassOhCrap: The Big Hero 9's reactions to realizing that someone is breaking Callaghan out of prison.
* TheMentor:
** Takahito continues to act as this for several members of the group (notably Wasabi, Riley, and Baymax).
** Stan is one for Big Hero 9 as a whole, offering them tactics/advice, giving Hiro some of his old gear, and calling in [[TheCavalry the AVL when the group is getting beaten in battle]].
** Megamind wants to become one to Hiro, as the teen reminds the alien of what he was like at that age, and worries about Hiro going down the wrong path.
** Dr. Cockroach was one to Robert Callaghan when he was still a student, and is incredibly disappointed in how he's become Yokai. It's implied for a moment that he might become one for Honey Lemon, seeing as how she became starstruck when she learned that he (when he was human) was a famous geneticist she'd studied.
** Violet points out that Bob has been acting as this for Susan, seeing as how they have similar power sets.
* MindRape: Mezmerella inflicts this on Riley. Violet theorizes that her powers might have made it even ''worse'', and even a couple of hours or so later, she's in a TroubledFetalPosition, haunted by the experience.
** [[spoiler: Phantasma]] was trying to do a robotic version of this to Baymax, feeling that his healthcare protocols were illogical and attempting to rewrite his core programming before being stopped.
* TheMole: The AVL recruits Gru to infiltrate the Syndicate for them. They don't trust him fully, so they also send Lucy in with him. [[spoiler:Unfortunately, Enigma was onto them from the start.]]
* MonsterRoommate:
** Oh has moved in with Fred (who claims that [[CloudCuckoolander he's wanted an alien roommate since he was a kid]]). Before that, Oh was this to Wasabi. Wasabi admits that he's much happier with Oh staying at Fred's.
** For those living at the base, ''everyone'' on Team Monster is this.
* MoralityChip: As a method of furthering his capacity to help people, Hiro creates a chip that would allow Baymax to feel and express human emotion. While the emotions are convincing enough that [[TheEmpath Riley]] could sense them, it's also very basic, causing Baymax to [[MoodSwinger flip-flop between extremes]] (mindless laughter, sobbing, UnstoppableRage and even attempting to vomit) uncontrollably.
* MultipleChoicePast: Each of the Gru girls has a different theory of what the Minions are. Edith thinks they're mutated corn. Agnes thinks they're fairies cursed by a unicorn. Margo thinks they're some sort of evolutionary off-shot.
* MysteriousWatcher: One is shown to be keeping tabs on the Big Hero 9 at the end of the first chapter. They turn out to be an agent of the new BigBad's named Phantasma.
* MythologyGag:
** Stanley Lieber's old hero alias ([[LegacyCharacter now inherited by Hiro]]) "Excelsior" is Creator/StanLee's catchphrase. There's also the fact that "Stanley Lieber" is Stan Lee's real name, and his wife is later shown to be named Joan, which is the same as the real Stan Lee's own wife.
** Lucy Wilde incorrectly calls Big Hero 9 by their canon name, Big Hero 6.
** Elastigirl had a mohawk in the past.
** Ginormica can alter her size like in the [[WesternAnimation/MonstersVsAliens2013 TV series]].
** Mirage's backstory is similar to that of the BigBad in ''WesternAnimation/Incredibles2'' -- both lost loved ones due to the failure of Supers to save them, and allowed their bitterness and anger over those losses to turn towards hatred of all Supers.
** Hiro's method of costume delivery is straight from [[WesternAnimation/BigHero6TheSeries the TV show]].
** Mezmerella from the [[ComicBook/TheIncredibles Incredibles comic]] is a member of Enigma's Syndicate.
** Xerek from the comics kidnapped Nefario's son in an attempt to force the scientist to work for him.
** In the original Big Hero 6 comics, there was a joke about Hiro and Fred making an invisibility suit that they lost and never found again. Here, Hiro gives Fred an upgraded suit that can turn invisible with the aid of cameras.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Metro Man seems to have this reaction when Bob points out to him all the flaws in his FakingTheDead plan, especially the fact that it inadvertently led to people's deaths.
* NamedByTheAdaptation:
** Metro Man's civilian name was never revealed in canon. Here, it's revealed to be Wayne Scott.
** Dr. Nefario's name is revealed to be Joseph.
** Dr. Cockroach's birth name is revealed to be Vincent Delambre.
* NoodleIncident:
** Megamind has apparently had numerous encounters with Mr. Incredible in the past, many of which contribute to Mr. Incredible's strong hate for the reformed villain. Likewise, Megamind and Gru apparently teamed up on occasion, with Mr. Incredible and Metro Man needing to [[OffscreenMomentOfAwesome team up to beat them]].
** Wasabi apparently once almost cut the lab building in half during an experiment.
** ''Something'' apparently happened to Dr. Nefario's family, that Stanley blames himself for, that drove him to villainy. [[spoiler: It's eventually revealed that Nefario's son was killed by the villain Xerek]].
** Mr. Perkins knew Scarlet Overkill. Also, the original Scarlet is apparently dead, but with no details on how.
* NotSoAboveItAll: The Incredibles and Frozone know that Jack-Jack is practically indestructible, so being inside of B.O.B. (who dissolves whatever he eats) won't hurt him. The Monsters, of course, don't know this, and the supers enjoy a moment or two of watching them panic when Jack-Jack jumps in B.O.B. and won't come out. The trick is revealed when Jack-Jack is ordered to teleport out by his father.
* NoSell:
** During the nightclub fight, Susan is completely unharmed by anything her opponents throw at her, thanks to the nature of her SizeShifter powers making her virtually invulnerable at normal human size. She's more angry about the fact that the idiots got beer in her hair.
** Mezzmerella's psychic powers have no effect on B.O.B., presumably because he has no brain.
* NotSoDifferentRemark:
** Hiro reminds Megamind a lot of himself, which he finds a bit worrying given his own past as a villain.
** After learning about Nefario's StartOfDarkness, Hiro sees similarities between the two of them, the main difference being that he had his friends and girlfriend to act as as collective MoralityPet.
* OddFriendship: A few:
** Plucky, energetic AVL operative Lucy Wilde and FemmeFatale former-supervillain accomplice Mirage. When Lucy feels that Mirage is being treated unfairly when she is sent to pick up the Monster team from Monger, even calling Mirage her best friend with Mirage doing nothing to deny this.
** Violet, an eighteen-year-old super, and Susan, a twenty-six-year old giantess, get along right away.
* OhCrap: Megamind's reaction to realizing he's in the same room as Mr. Incredible, who has an old grudge against him.
* OneSteveLimit: Averted, as Mr. Incredible and "Benzoate Ostylezene Bicarbonate" meet, with the Monsters observing the challenges of both individuals being known as "Bob" with no clear way to distinguish one from the other when calling them by name.
** This is also averted with Gru's Minions and Megamind's sidekick Minion, as the Minions all have individual names.
* OpenMouthInsertFoot: After the fight, Megamind notices how worried Hiro is about Baymax. He tries to cheer him up by telling him that, as Baymax is a robot, every part of him is replaceable...then realizes that, since Hiro is clearly attached to Baymax, this was the wrong thing to say. Hiro laughs it off, admitting that [[ContinuityNod he's replaced all but one of Baymax's parts by this point.]]
* OutlivingOnesOffspring: The reason Dr. Nefario went evil. Xerek kidnapped his son hoping he could force Nefario to work for him. The original Excelsior tried to rescue him, but apparently he was already dead when Excelsior got there. Embittered by Excelsior's failure, Nefario went after Xerek by himself and killed him along with most of his men by the time Excelsior caught up to him.
* OutrankingYourJob: Mirage is assigned by Dicker to rendezvous with General Monger at Area 51 to pick up the monsters. Lucy is quick to complain, pointing out that doing so is something you would assign to an intern and not the much more experienced Mirage and that they are just giving her a hard time because of her criminal past. Dicker claims that it is merely due to a lack of staff on standby.
* PaperThinDisguise: Brought up when [[spoiler:Honey Lemon learns that Susan's Ginormica, as she asks how she didn't recognise Susan when Ginormica doesn't wear a mask, Susan observing that it's surprisingly easy to blend in when people expect you to be ten times taller]].
* PlayAlongPrisoner: Yama lets himself get arrested so that he can get close to Callaghan, and then reveals that [[spoiler:he has a false tooth containing the PX formula, which he uses to strengthen himself and break them out.]]
* PoorCommunicationKills: Much of the conflict between Megamind and Mr. Incredible is because no one bothered to tell his teammates that he ''didn't'' kill Metro Man and that Metro Man's death was actually faked. The only reason Megamind ''himself'' didn't say anything earlier is because he assumed that the hatred that Bob in particular felt was just "a general lingering resentment" from his supervillain days, something that they could work out over time.
* PunchClockVillain: Deconstructed. As pointed out by Bob, Megamind was never really all that evil. He was confident in his schemes because he ''knew'' they were going to fail thanks to Metro Man -- he was in it more for the societal obligation and the thrill of it all than any real ill will. However, ''because'' he wasn't all that evil, Metro Man forgot that most villains weren't like him and actually were dangerous to the public, which is why he was selfish enough to fake his death to become a singer.
* RagtagBunchOfMisfits: Played with. The AVL team consists of a boy genius, his girlfriend with empathic abilities, a robotic nurse with karate skills, a germaphobic engineer/black belt in karate, a bubbly yet [[AdaptationalAngstUpgrade depressed]] chemist, a rough no-nonsense engineer/cyclist, the incredibly rich son of a super-hero, a normal girl who can drive a flying car, her alien copilot, a former supervillain, his sidekick (a fish driving a robotic suit), a family of superheroes, their close friend with ice powers, a fifty-foot-tall woman, a butterfly kaiju, a sentient blob, a fish-ape, and a scientist who gave himself a cockroach head.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: After the Gorg was defeated, the government took him, Smek, and every Boov except Oh into custody. While the Gorg and Smek were locked up for their crimes, however, the rest of the Boov were granted refugee status due to their being enslaved by the Gorg and being forced to commit crimes against Earth. By the time Oh visits them, they've been granted sanctuary in Area 51 in exchange for showing their scientists how to build Boov technology.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech:
** Bob gives a very passionate, and probably deserved, one to Metro Man after learning that the superhero faked his death and left the city in the hands of Megamind, and didn't even think of returning to help with the Titan issue. The speech seems to have an effect, as Metro Man doesn't disagree with him and seems ashamed as the two leave the bar.
** Margo, upon meeting Megamind, gives him a brief one, along with a metaphorical (and physical) punch to the gut.
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: Xerek kidnapped Dr. Nefario's son in an attempt to force Nefario to work for him. The original Excelsior tried to rescue him, but he was apparently already dead when he got there. Nefario promptly killed Xerek, and was able to go through most of his men by the time that Excelsior caught up to him,
* RobotGirl: [[spoiler:Phantasma]] is an AI with a body made out of microbots, created by Enigma. She looks human due to image inducers.
* SeenItAll: When taking the hidden elevator down into Gru's lab, Tip notes that it says something about her life that she's unfazed by the weirdness of the situation.
* ShapeshifterBaggage: Susan has the same mass when shrunken down, due to the way the SizeShifter device she uses works (contracting the empty space in her molecules). This means that most normal furniture cracks under her weight.
* ShipTease: Between Susan and Honey.
* ShoutOut:
** During the attack on [=KreiTech=], Yama trolls Krei by claiming he and his men are after some [[Franchise/StarWars proton torpedoes]], some [[Franchise/StarTrek dilithium warp engines]], and a [[Franchise/BackToTheFuture flux capacitor]].
** The device Doctor Cockroach's SizeShifter device that allows Susan to shrink to normal size and back works by [[Film/HoneyIShrunkTheKids contracting the empty space in-between her molecules]].
** When on Phantasma's shoulder, Doctor Cockroach claims to [[WesternAnimation/{{Pinocchio}} be her conscience]]. When she doesn't the reference, he wonders if it would have worked if he was part cricket instead.
** Metro Man's name, Wayne Scott, is likely one to both [[Franchise/{{Batman}} Bruce Wayne]] and [[Franchise/GreenLantern Alan Scott]].
* SizeShifter:
** Thanks to an invention of Doctor Cockroach's, Susan/Ginormica can now switch between her normal human size and her superpowered huge size.
** After Megamind has the idea for Doctor Cockroach to use it to sneak up on Bob during the training spar, the Doctor apparently made a second one for himself, which he can use to shrink down to the size of a regular cockroach.
* TheSmartGuy: Applies to practically every other character:
** Hiro, Wasabi, Gogo, and Honey Lemon are all brilliant students who've already proved to be masters of their respective fields.
** Megamind's ability to build weapons or make strategic plans is his superpower.
** Dr. Cockroach is still capable of making machines out of literal garbage, and (before his accident) was the famed geneticist Dr. Vincent Delambre. Before the fic, he even made Susan a watch that could help her shrink down to a normal size.
** Dr. Nefario, despite his advanced age, is still capable of creating impressive weapons, and his work is apparently admired by Dr. Cockroach and Megamind (considering how they're all [[MadScientist mad scientists]], this isn't that surprising).
** Oh, along with most of the Boov, is capable of using his advanced technological skills to help build or design tools to help his team (such as deflector shields and making Wasabi's van fly).
** A villainous example with Enigma, who Hiro (after realizing that he must have reverse-engineered the Big Hero 9's equipment) theorizes might be the smartest man he's ever met.
* SpellMyNameWithAThe: Dash Parr's choice of superhero codename is "''the'' Dash". Everyone calls him out on what a poor choice this is. When he complains that they didn't give Violet any grief about her "Ultraviolet" name, the retort is that ''her'' name is actually ''clever''.
* SquareCubeLaw: Susan's SizeShifter device contracts the empty space of her molecules, so she's a lot denser when in her five-foot form, and while this makes her ImmuneToBullets, and just as strong as she is normally, she can't use furniture that isn't reinforced.
* StartOfDarkness: Mirage explains hers in Chapter 5 -- her parents died when she was a child in collateral damage during a fight between Fred's father and Dr. Nefario, specifically due to her father's refusal for them to do anything to save themselves because he was sure Excelsior would save them. Mirage grew increasingly bitter over this as she grew up and eventually joined Syndrome because she wanted to convince people to give up their reliance on Supers.
** Nefario's own start came when Xerek had his son kidnapped in an attempt to force the scientist to work for him. Excelsior tried to recue the boy but was too late, and Nefario went on a RoaringRampageOfRevenge that climaxed in the events that led to Mirage's above mentioned start.
* StealthHiBye: Enigma pulls this on Gru and Lucy during their meeting in the Bank of Evil. Gru questions if he was just standing in the shadows the whole time waiting to make a dramatic entrance.
* StringTheory: Fred still has his board about Gru from ''Empathy''.
* SuperheroParadox: Mirage developed her hatred of supers in part because Nefario chose to seek out Excelsior to fight, which was what led to the pier collapse that killed her parents.
* SupermanStaysOutOfGotham: The reason why the AVL has been keeping itself out of Metro City is because Megamind was not considered a big enough threat to warrant their concern, his villain career consisting of robbery and property damage while not actually being a danger to the public (fully aware that Metro Man was alive and well). The fact that he [[HeelFaceTurn cleaned up his own act]] was probably another reason.
* SuperStrength:
** Susan is as strong shrunken as she is big because of the SizeShifter device that she uses not changing her overall mass.
** Mr. Incredible is as strong as Susan, and the two regularly spar.
** Baymax still has his canon strength, and is seen lifting various heavy objects with no real strain.
** Link isn't the team's heaviest hitter, but he's still capable of impressive strength (being strong enough to knock Mr. Incredible off-balance in Chapter 14).
* SurprisinglyMundaneReason: When the time comes to assemble the team, Mirage is assigned the task of recruiting the monsters from Area 51, a job usually reserved for lower-ranking agents or interns. Lucy goes off at Agent Dicker, thinking that Mirage's past is the reason they're giving her what Lucy sees as a demeaning assignment. He stops her by saying it isn't out of mistrust: they just don't have anyone else they can send as they are short-staffed. Lucy immediately calms down and is then given a similar assignment to Mirage.
* ThatManIsDead:
** Wayne Scott has fully abandoned his Metro Man identity, and the AVL has maintained the belief that the super is dead.
** A minor example with Dr. Cockroach. Before he had the accident that turned him into a monster, his real name was Vincent Delambre, a famed geneticist. He doesn't go by that name anymore, as the government faked his death after he was taken into their custody. Honey Lemon, a talented scientist herself, is starstruck when she learns that a man who's work she's studied for ''years'' is one of her newest teammates.
* ThereAreNoTherapists:
** Averted. Riley is apparently still seeing her psychiatrist, and after her MindRape experience, comments that she's probably going to need to go back again.
** Margo has apparently outright avoided going to a therapist, due to a fear of being seen as crazy. Riley telling her about her own experiences with therapy seem to have changed her mind.
* ThisIsGonnaSuck:
** Dicker when acceding to Megamind's request to take Bob to meet Metro Man. Megamind himself knew it wasn't going to go well either, but also pointed out that it was the only way he and Bob were going to bury the hatchet.
** Megamind had this reaction ''again'' when they finally did meet up with Metro Man, after Bob's disbelief gave way to cold anger.
* TimeSkip:
** For the Parr family, it's been four years since they fought Syndrome, so Jack Jack's a toddler, Dash's a teenager, and Violet's a college student.
** It's established that a few months have passed since Big Hero 9 formed. In that time, Oh has moved in with Fred, Wasabi and Gogo are official (along with Hiro and Riley), and Baymax's body has been rebuilt.
* TooDumbToLive: Mirage's mother wanted to get the heck out of dodge after a blast from the Exelscior/Dr. Nefario fight hit the pier that they were on, but she and her husband died because he believed that Excelsior would save them and insisted on staying put.
* TragicKeepsake: Megamind keeps the Defuser Gun in a locked case as a constant reminder of "the cost of my arrogance".
* {{Troll}}: Yama jokingly telling Krei that he and his goons are looking for items from various science fiction series when the CEO asks why they're there.
* TranquilFury: Bob initially has this when he meets anyone he has a history with (shown when he meets Megamind and the [[ReportsOfMyDeathWereGreatlyExaggerated not-dead]] Metro Man).
* TroubledFetalPosition: Riley curls up into one at the AVL base after Mezzmerella's MindRape.
** After Margo punches Megamind in anger due to her parents being victims of Titan's rampage and runs off, Riley finds her in this position in Dr. Nerfario's lab.
* UnrealisticBlackHole: Helen gained her powers through exposure to a short-lived mini black hole generated by a failed super-rocket. The dark matter the black hole released mutated her body, allowing her to survive as the black hole stretched her body like spaghetti.
* VillainTeamUp: Apparently happened a few times between Megamind and Gru back in the day.
* VolcanoLair: The Syndicate's base of operations.
* WhatTheHellHero:
** Honey snaps at Hiro after his experiment with giving Baymax emotions goes wrong. In turn, the rest of the group gives her a mild chewing out for overreacting.
** The other members of the group ''aren't'' happy with Fred for letting their identities slip to Violet, even if she's a super herself. Fred manages to argue that his friends gave him no choice, as he was with Violet, in the lab, when they called him, and reminds them all that he's a terrible liar.
** Bob is ''pissed'' to learn that Metro Man faked his death to quit being a hero and become a musician instead. He might've been able to forgive it, had Wayne not stood on the sidelines while Titan was terrorizing Metro City, forcing Megamind to defeat the villain in his place. As Bob puts it, while Megamind ''was'' the one who created Titan (and came to regret it), he only did it because he was trying to find someone to replace Metro Man; then, when Titan started his rampage, Megamind had to be the one to defeat him, even though Metro City was under Wayne's protection and thus it should've been him that dealt with Titan instead, especially since he was more powerful and better equipped to deal with Titan than Megamind was, and thus, theoretically, could've mitigated more of the damage. His speech is also a lot more effective than Roxanne's was in the movie, most likely because, unlike Roxanne, Bob and Wayne are both supers and used to be close friends.
* TheWorfEffect: In both the previous work and for the first several chapters of the fic, Big Hero 9 (along with Violet) are shown to be incredibly skilled fighters capable of stopping dangerous criminals and alien invasions. During their first fight with the Syndicate, they are mercilessly beaten down, and would have been killed if the AVL's reinforcements hadn't shown up in time.
* {{Workaholic}}:
** Honey Lemon has been throwing herself into her experiments and her job at the Lucky Cat Cafe a lot as a coping mechanism for Tadashi's death to the point that her friends are getting worried about her, even secretly taking some of the backup equipment Hiro made to chemically treat it to better withstand conditions that they might encounter without telling him.
** When she meets Honey, Susan admits that she's become a bit of one herself, even name dropping the trope itself.
* WorthyOpponent: Enigma views Hiro as one, even offering to let him join the Syndicate.
* WouldHurtAChild:
** Underminer has no problem trying to strangle Tip. Later [[spoiler:he tries to kill a sedated Jack Jack as payback for the Parrs "messing with his business" earlier, justifying it by saying that Enigma didn't specify if he wanted the boy alive or dead, before Gru stops him.]]
** When Hiro rejected Enigma's offer of joining the Syndicate, Enigma was about to ''cut his head off'' before Megamind stepped in.
* UnskilledButStrong: Big Hero 9 is made up of highly intelligent and/or skilled people (and an alien) who can take down every day criminals with ease, but they (with the exception of Violet, who's been fighting crime since her early teens) have only been superheroes for a few months. The Syndicate is made up of villains with years, even decades of practice. As such, they are able to incapacitate (and almost kill) several team members in minutes. They are forced to retreat when Megamind, the Incredibles, Frozone, and the Monsters (all of whom have been fighting crime for years) even the odds.
* XCalledTheyWantTheirYBack: Link has this to say upon meeting Balthazar Bratt:
-->"The eighties called, they want their... jeez, everything back."
* YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre: Bob of all people gives this speech to Megamind when the latter admits he feels guilty for all the deaths Titan caused, pointing out that all he did was give Titan his powers -- it was Titan himself who chose to do all those things.
* YouCalledMeXItMustBeSerious: Now that they're a couple, [=GoGo=] calls Wasabi "Darron" more often than she uses his nickname, showing how their relationship has grown more serious.
