During the era of Silver Millennium, four princesses trained and prepared for their task to act as protectors and advisers to the growing Princess Serenity. Back on their home planets, young warriors trained and prepared for their task to guard and protect the their princess's home planets and to act as their personal bodyguards when they could be together. These warriors, named the Planetary Guardians were each invited to the Moon and were present during the invasion by the Dark Kingdom, pulling them into the battle that left the Silver Millennium in ruins and its inhabitants sent to earth to be reborn.

After the defeat of the Death Phantom, peace returns once again to Tokyo and the Sailor Senshi prepare to enjoy a quiet remainder of their second year in middle school before having to worry about high school entrance exams. Only the arrival of a young man from America catches their eye, most notably when they find him in possession of a weapon and ocarina bearing the symbols of Mercury.

Tropers/GunarmDyne's ''[[http://avalanche-hq.com/animefics/smg.html Sailor Moon G: The Planetary Guardians]]'' began as a pet project in his high school days to reinterpret portions of the the '90's anime version of ''Franchise/SailorMoon'' while including several manga elements as well. It's meant to bridge the gap between the R and S series.

----
!!This ''Franchise/SailorMoon'' FanFic series contains examples of:

* [[AnnoyingPatient Annoying Prisoner]]: Minako knows she isn't going to be outright killed when she's locked up in a cell in Part 4, so she makes her captor's life a living hell as much as possible. She's even dubbed, "Annoying girl," by Topaz.
* AntiVillain:
** Blade. [[spoiler:The entire plot is his BatmanGambit to restore his son's memories and reunite him with Princess Mercury, grant his friend's wish, and defeat the GreaterScopeVillain.]]
** Amethyst. He isn't interested in conquering Earth. He just wants to go home but needs a strong enough power source to open a portal back and a means to allow his followers to survive the atmospheric conditions.
* BaitAndSwitch:
** Part 2 begins with Ami being cornered and running out of options, but seeing a way out and turning things around... to win a chess game.
** Part 5 begins with Kariudo entering a degree of SanitySlippage that ends with a full on HeroicBSOD, only to reveal he didn't want to get dragged along on a shopping trip.
* BashBrothers: Much like the Sailor Senshi, the Guardians' weapons and skills are designed to allow them to fight together as a team while covering each other's weaknesses. This also applies to each of their respective Senshi when the two of them fight together.
** Several skills are like this too: As Sailor Venus can utilize her Crescent Beam to sweep out a large area (as seen in the ''R'' movie), Guardian Venus's similar ability sacrifices such flexibility (making it more accurate, but easier to dodge) for more power.
* BattleCouple: Each of the Inner Sailor Senshi and her respective Guardian can potentially become one, though only two of the pairings are romantically involved as of the current point in the series.
* BigBrotherMentor: The Guardians look up to and respect Mamoru.
* BigDamnHero:
** Both Sailor Pluto and Sailor Jupiter in the second battle in Part 3.
** Sailor and Guardian Mercury in the battle in Part 4.
* BodyHorror:
** Minako is turned into a MonsterOfTheWeek in part 4. She gets better.
** The youma of the Dark Kingdom are revealed to have undergone this.
* BookDumb: Kariudo is an average student and prioritizes physical education over academic knowledge, but has to keep his grades up or he'll lose his inheritance.
* BreadEggsBreadedEggs: Minako's thought process of, "That jerk! That pervert! ''That perverted jerk!''" when Kariudo puts his foot in his mouth a second time.
* BrickJoke: The author's notes in Part 1 explain that one of Guardian Mercury's powers would be used for a practical joke later on. It's finally made manifest in Part 5.
* BrilliantButLazy: Played with. Guardian Mercury is more dedicated to his training and mission than his studies, but still gets high scores because he's good at naturally remembering information. He respects Ami for her dedication to her own studies and admits she deserves to score better than him at tests due to earning them through hard work. [[spoiler:Many of the subjects are things he simply remembers from studying them beforehand, with the exception (and his weakest subject) being history, as much of it took place while he was in suspension.]]
* BroughtDownToNormal: Minako's transformation pen is damaged when she's taken prisoner in Part 4, prompting her to devise a plan to get her captor so angry to try and physically lash out at her, giving her a chance use her own strength to escape. [[spoiler:It falls apart when she's injected with a drug via a tranquilizer gun.]]
* CallForward: To numerous events that take place further in the timeline in both the anime and manga.
** Makoto seeing an airline commercial on TV and revealing her fear of planes.
** Ami's allergic reaction to love letters.
** One-shot characters who know the main characters and are targeted in the S series are mentioned.
* ChekhovsGun: Guardian Mercury not having aged for years, keeping him at the appearance of a 15-year old for the first half of the series. [[spoiler:It makes him a living time distortion and begins to affect everything around him, turning the brief period between the R and S series into several months.]]
* CombinationAttack:
** Each of the Sailor Senshi and her respective Guardian can combine two of their attacks to turn them into something more massive.
** Subverted between the Guardians themselves. When they tried one as an experiment, Guardian Mercury received a very nasty shock from Jupiter's Thunder Arrow.
* ComboPlatterPowers: The Guardians' weapons and the planetary instruments are what allow them to draw power from their home planets and what allow them to utilize any special abilities, unlike the Sailor Senshi whose powers come from their Sailor Crystals/Star Seeds.
* ContinuityNod: The characters talk about previous events and battles multiple times throughout the series, drawing experience from those battles to look for new clues to the current situation.
* CoolBigSis: Debe sees Makoto as one.
* DeadpanSnarker: Guardian Mercury, both in his thoughts and vocalized.
* DebtDetester: Andesite. Depite his life having been saved by Amethyst and owing him a life debt per his tribe's customs, he resents him for not allowing him to wantonly slaughter his enemies.
* TheDulcineaEffect: Kariudo had spent a grand total of two minutes with Minako and been slapped by her twice, but chases after her when she's knocked out and abducted in Part 4.
* EarlyBirdCameo: Haruka, Michiru, and Hotaru all appear in side scenes throughout the series.
* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness: It's easy to see that Parts 3-5 were written years after Parts 1 and 2.
* ExtremeDoormat: Kariudo just can't say no to Minako. She takes full advantage of this.
* AFatherToHisMen: Amethyst bides his time, doesn't waste his followers' lives, and is honestly humbled about how many of them remained loyal to him.
* FirstNameBasis: Debe spent more time after being sent to earth in America than in Japan, so he calls everyone by their first name and omits honorifics more often than not. The girls give him a pass on this.
* GratuitousEnglish: Debe, having spent the past two years in America, tends to lapse into English when he's taken by surprise or when he's swearing.
* InstantExpert: Guardian Mercury appears to be this for several tasks, but it's due to a combination of the memories/knowledge implanted in him and the retained muscled memory from his original training.
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: Guardian Mercury was sent to earth without memories of his identity and past just in case he would not need to be "recalled." He did retain the muscle memory of how to fight and subconsciously recalled topics he'd studied in the past, making it easy for him to score well on most exams.
* LastStand: [[spoiler:The combined powers of the planetary instruments and weapons being equal to that of the Silver Crystal were set up by the planetary monarchies to act as a check and balance system allowing them to fight back if the Silver Millennium ever turned tyrannical.]]
* LeftHanging: The original writing of the series ended only halfway in. A rewrite is in progress.
* LineOfSightName: Guardian Mercury adopted his last name from a Japanese movie poster. Changed in the rewrite as his alias is implanted into his memories before he's sent to earth.
* LiteralMinded: After being the bearer of bad news to Ami in Part 2, Debe is on the receiving end of her emotional outburst. When she tells him, "I never want to see you again!" he gets ready to leave for good.
* TheLostLenore: [[spoiler:The younger, identical twin sister of Princess Jupiter, Mikoto, for Shinozaki.]]
* LukeIAmYourFather: The main villain of Part 1 is revealed as Guardian Mercury's long-lost father who was believed to have died when Guardian Mercury was a baby.
* MercyKill: Amethyst gives this to Jadeite rather than leaving him to be frozen in Beryl's crystal for all eternity when he finds her "collection."
* MsFanservice: InUniverse, Minako becomes perfectly willing to take risque photos of herself to give to Kariudo after she remembers him[[note]]he never actually gets them though as she was caught in the act[[/note]].
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Sailor Jupiter's tendency to be the first to rush into battle gives her a moment of this when she throws a Sparkling Wide Pressure at the monster that turns out to really be Minako. She's horrified when seeing a civilian jump to take the attack, knowing it's quite capable of killing a normal person.
* NiceGuy: Shinozaki never snarks at or teases the girls like the other guys tend to.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: Debe wants to speak with Makoto alone and the other girls insist on coming along. He distracts them by pointing out a handsome man in the crowd and they run off. Said man is TheDragon and their encounter with him is what inspires him to attack Minako and Rei later on.
* NoNameGiven: Guardian Mercury doesn't remember his real name. The Japanese-sounding "Ohara Debe" is his alias.
** In the rewrite, his birth name is lost, is given a new name when he's adopted, and has a new alias implanted into his memories before being sent to earth to help him quickly adapt to and blend in with modern society.
* OhCrap: All three of Mamoru, Kariudo, and Debe when they see Usagi and Minako headed their way after the three had just pranked them and Ami. Immediately followed by another one when they find Ami had cut off their escape path.
* OnlySaneMan: Kariudo is the only one who finds delivering ham-handed speeches to the enemy a waste of time and energy, notably because he practices jeet-kun-do and it's all about not making unnecessary movements or actions.
* OriginalGeneration: Guardians Mercury and Venus are original characters with Jupiter being based on the anime-only Shinozaki. As of the original writing, [[spoiler:the new]] Mars has not surfaced.
* OutGambitted: Usagi and Minako are a bit miffed at the guys for wanting to break away from their group so they can do their own Christmas shopping, so Minako makes them promise to wait "at that spot" when they're done. Minako then makes sure she, Usagi, and Ami take a ''very'' long time so as to keep the guys waiting for several extra hours. When they do finally return to the meeting spot, it's dark and snowing, so the three girls find only snow-covered lumps with life-size ice statues of Mamoru, Debe, and Karuido[[note]]courtesy of Guardian Mercury's ability to draw moisture from the air and create objects out of ice[[/note]] underneath, causing Usagi and Minako to panic, thinking they were all frozen alive while waiting. The trope happens again immediately after as Ami deduces that it was an elaborate prank and cuts off the guys before they can escape their vantage point.
* PlatonicLifePartners: Makoto and Shinozaki are more than friends but don't share romantic feelings, allowing themselves to be fully honest with each other about anything.
* PoorCommunicationKills:
** Debe doesn't like to share information about his hunches until he can confirm them himself. This bites him hard more than once.
** Usagi is angry that Mamoru never invited her to the festival in Part 3, only for Luna to ask her if she ever told him about it in the first place.
* RealLifeWritesThePlot: Rather, real life got too busy for the author to finish the original series. A rewrite is planned.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: Guardian Mercury was not reborn, making him over 1,000 years old.
* ReincarnationRomance: Only played straight with Sailor and Guardian Venus. [[spoiler:The two Jupiters aren't romantically involved (though he was engaged to her twin sister in their past life), Guardian Mercury was never reincarnated, and the original Guardian Mars was a woman and her reincarnated self died in a childhood accident, prompting Rei to have to choose a new one.]]
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: When a youma recognizes Sailor Jupiter as one of the "Destroyers," it flips out and goes for the kill.
* SadisticChoice: In Part 4, Kariudo had to either allow Minako to be turned into a monster and risk her killing innocents, or prevent her from receiving the final dose of the drug that would have turned her into one, causing her to go insane from withdrawal symptoms due to its enormously addictive nature.
* ShoutOut:
** The original story (and series) were heavily inspired by elements from ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaOcarinaOfTime'' and ''VideoGame/LufiaIIRiseOfTheSinistrals''.
** When Makoto recalls being turned into a wax statue (anime episode 37), she asks, "[[VideoGame/ChronoTrigger It was so cold... so lonely... Is that what it's like to die?]]"
** Usagi's panicked scream traversing the depths of space and dying down around Saturn in Part 5 is one to ''WesternAnimation/DarkwingDuck'' when he did the same after he ended up with extra arms in one episode.
* SmartPeoplePlayChess: By mid-series, Ami and Debe have a friendly chess rivalry going on. She relies on logic while he relies on intuition, making them evenly matched.
* SurvivorGuilt: Being the only survivor of the destruction of Silver Millenium, Guardian Mercury overworks himself to make sure the tragedy is never repeated. He also blames himself for Ryo getting hurt (killed in the original writing) in an accident when he was the target. The third strike is after failing to protect Ami from getting seriously injured in Part 2, so he leaves to train in the mountains and she has to help him overcome his own inferiority complex.
* TakingTheBullet: Kariudo for Minako twice. The first time is a subversion as Topaz waited for him to fall to the ground to fire. The second time is played straight
* TearsOfJoy: Makoto after learning Shinozaki wasn't crushed by a collapsing building and they're reunited.
* ThatCameOutWrong: Kariudo's first couple of encounters with Minako don't go well because, as Guardian Venus, he picks up on the naughty thoughts she has about him and subconsciously blurts them out.
* TimeSkip: Some parts take place weeks apart. Part 4 begins right after Part 3 ends. [[spoiler:The fact that more time seems to pass between the actual end-point of R and the beginning of S is a plot point.]]
* {{Troll}}:
** Upon meeting Usagi, Debe thinks she's the kind of girl you just can't help but want to tease.
** Ami veers into this a few times when she begins feeling playful, but more often as a cover for her own embarrassment.
* ThemeNaming: The concept of the (main) villains being named after mineral types continues.
* TwinSwitch: Played with. Both Shinozaki and Makoto believe that the spirit of Princess Jupiter they speak with in Part 3 is Makoto's past self. [[spoiler:It's the spirit of her twin sister who died from illness in their past life and was the one who Shinozaki was romantically involved with in that life. But, because she didn't die in the attack on Silver Millennium, she wasn't sent to be reborn on earth by Queen Serenity.]]
