Originally a Chapter-a-Day story by Okinawa Angel on Fanfiction.net, ''Andrea’s Rerum Danarae'' (lat. ''Danaran Matters'') is by now a more than 700k words long AlternateContinuity [[Manga/OnePiece One Piece]] Fanfic in which slowly but surely [[PerspectiveFlip the focus and perspective is flipped]] from the Straw Hat Pirates to the side of [[HeroAntagonist The Marines]][=/=][[HeroOfAnotherStory The Navy]], who, while being stuck in an {{ancient conspiracy}}-esque situation for the last 800(!) years, have to deal with the antics of Luffy & Crew.

Focal point of the entire story is the turbulent May-December relationship of Akainu(!) with the [[OriginalCharacter OC]] ''twin'' sister of Portgas D. Ace, ''Gol D. Andrea'' (a Marine), who manage together to cause enough trouble to shake the world, much to the dismay of other Marines such as Sengoku or Kuzan, and the complete terror of World Government and pirates alike.

While Andy’s Perils (complete) is near exclusively Okinawa Angel’s work, Andrea’s Awakening (ongoing) is a co-production with fellow FFN author Kamikashi.

'''Warning: As the first story is already completed, there will be unmarked spoilers.'''
----
!! This story provide examples of:
* ArcWords: [[spoiler:'''The Truth of this World''', Danara Marina]].
* AlternateContinuity: It’s fan fiction, so this is the rule.
* AncientConspiracy: [[spoiler:The entire setup of the Navy, the Kumori clan/Dai Senmei and its direct allies is this: With their knowledge of the Void Century and the Kumori’s control of the fealty/loyalty of the Navy, they are holding the World Government by its throat for the last 820+ years. With the rising arrogance of the World Government these days, the Dai Senmei are understandably irritated with them. As Andy’s and Sakazuki’s doubts come to a head and they learn this terrible truth, they are thrown into a grim despair, and ultimately become part of the conspiracy.]]
* ArsonMurderAndJaywalking: [[spoiler: The list that Luffy gives to Big Mom to show the futility of '''her''' resisting against '''him''' just before killing her states that he ''burnt [her] fleet, defeated [her] lieutenants, '''and took away all [her] damn candy'''''.]]
* BeingGoodSucks: Together with the Ancient Conspiracy setup, this part of a Marine’s job is a regular reason for various states of negativity for them, ranging from a headache over [[INeedAFreakingDrink needing a drink]] to moments of passing the Despair Event Horizon; it doesn’t help that the other half of the conspiracy bargain (the Tenryûbito) isn’t exactly adhering to it.
* BilingualBonus: InUniverse – Robin's epiphet, ''Demon Child'', has a completely different meaning in Danaran, the language of the Navy ([[spoiler: and the ancient kingdom]]); there, the word ''demon'' may also mean '''traitor''', making her the ''[[spoiler: unfortunate child of a traitor]]''.
* BloodIsSquickerInWater: Robin still tends to casually point this out whenever possible, to the point where it becomes a RunningGag.
* CastOfSnowflakes: Both Canon and fanon characters. Since there's so many of them, both authors try at least to give them small details that separate each character's appearance.
* TheChainsOfCommanding: There’s nothing crappier to a proper marine than their ''esteemed employers'', but quitting isn’t an option either...
* CliffHanger: This is how Andy’s Perils end, with Andrea in a coma and with Sakazuki having an [[AntiHero anti-]]HeroicBSOD.
* CodeOfHonour: The official Code of Justice and Conduct of the Navy (which is more often than not ignored by the World Government) is this, as Danarans consider ''love, duty, honour and justice'' as interrelated if not the same. In consequence, the worst punishment the Navy knows is the punishment given to a common criminal, a [[PublicExecution semi-public Death by Hanging]] (as opposed to a firing squad or allowing suicide). Given how big Dai Senmei and their followers are on an honorable life (and death), this is the ultimate humiliation.
* ColorFailure: This is a ''One Piece'' fic, so this is the standard extreme shock reaction.
* CrapsackWorld: Direct consequence of the entire conspiracy, but it is implied it used to be worse [[spoiler: in the Void Century’s Danaran Civil War, as the Danaran usurper king nearly “sunk the world under the sea”]].
* DarkerAndEdgier: A direct consequence of the story being an entire DeconstructionFic.
* DeconstructionFic: Heavily so. While the original One Piece is the great adventure of a bunch of [[ThePiratesWhoDontDoAnything Pirates who don’t do anything]], especially the second story is a full-stop deconstruction of the underlying structure of the One Piece world.
* DehumanizingInsult: "Dog (of the World Government)" and "Government Pet" are the two worst things anyone can call a Marine in this continuity, far more than in original One Piece.
** Which one is actually the worse of both is not clear, as the latter is also a designator for a Marine that rose through the ranks through Government Backing, usually doing the World Government's dirty work (and thus being Absolute Justice followers) while escaping legal consequences.
* DystopiaIsHard: Shitty employers that interfere with the conduct of the Navy, tons of pirates and one CrapsackWorld that's as hard to keep in working order as herding cats make one tough dystopia to take care of for the Danarans.
* FoeTossingCharge: Performed by the 21st Navy STOC Fast Attack Squadron in Chapter 8 of Awakening, and is considered [[DynamicEntry their signature move]].
* {{Foreshadowing}}:
** The thing that gives Andrea her scar is a lightning bolt hitting Sabo’s Seastone grave. The first thing that draws her close to death is Enel, a lightning logia.
** Kuma asking Andrea where her brother (Luffy) would want to be sent and she jokes with an island of women sarcastically. Turns out he took her seriously
** Vice Admiral Isshô interrupting Doflamingo’s attempts to perturb Andrea at Marineford by spilling food on him. Later on in the Dressrosa Arc, he helps to foil a good deal of Doflamingo’s plans alongside of Akainu
** Dragon meeting a mysterious Marine Officer who punches and chokes him with a freezing ability after the mess in Dressrosa. Is later revealed to be Kuzan’s wife, Theodora, who holds a grudge over principles towards Dragon.
** Lucci wondering about if Andrea would be pleased at them wanting socializing training, not realizing that due to her pushing herself too far and not socializing with her superiors, she drives herself to death’s door and defies her supervisors when they were looking out for her health.
** Chapter 250 where she jokes how the world must be ending because Ace is the least troublesome out of Garp’s grandchildren then Garp says she should not joke about that. Later in the chapter, she falls into a coma.
** Andrea asking Sakazuki about Zephyr due to her having an unusual feeling. A chapter later, they have to deal with first Shuzo, a subordinate of Z, and then ultimately with Z himself.
* GoodIsNotSoft: The entire main cast are high-ranking Marines who spend their professional lives hunting pirates of varying strength.
* HeroicBSOD: Andy and Sakazuki have a bout of this after learning the truth and its despair.
* MayDecemberRomance: Andy and Sakazuki.
* MustHaveCaffeine: Robin has practically always a cup at hand. [[spoiler:Becoming a Marine Officer's cadet doesn't make it better, as she now can order chore kids around to get her a new cup whenever she feels like it.]]
* NGOSuperpower: [[spoiler:Unknown to most people, the entire Navy is this in Rerum Danarae: They’re a mercenary military hired 820+ years ago by contract whose major condition was to give them “justice”.]]
* NoHistoricalFiguresWereHarmed: Comes with the above-mentioned AncientConspiracy. Socrates of Athens, Friedrich Nietzsche, Robert Frost, John Masefield and Dante Alighieri become Danaran authors and philosophers ''Socrates of Ohara, Nietzsche C. Makepeace, Nieves C. Robert, Masefield D. St.John, and, well, Dante Alighieri''; thus the [[TagLine chapter quotes]] and various in-dialogue quotes.
** The French Vice Admiral Pierre Villeneuve gets recycled as a Navy commodore who has [[spoiler:to test Sakazuki's readiness for being STOC]]. Other historical sailors and pirates also get recycled.
** The Dai Senmei doctor and [[{{Sidekick}} right-hand-man]] of Kuzan is Vice Admiral Robert C. Schweitzer (here, last name is Last for once). His name is a composite of '''Robert''' Koch and Albert '''Schweitzer'''.
* NoodleIncident: Apparently, Theodora's submarine crew ended up in something involving a poisonous swamp. The female flag officer mentions it in passing to Sakazuki when it becomes clear that he left Punk Hazard a flaming hell, causing them all to shudder. At that point, Akainu tries very hard not to think of them and their missions as crazy.
-->"Well, better than a poison swamp," Theo sighed. On cue, the entire command crew shivered, indicating a particularly nasty memory they shared.\
''What kind of missions do these... people'' (he refused to think something more fitting)... ''go on regularly?!''
* NoSell: [[spoiler:Similar to canon, Luffy's experience with both Crocodile and Magellan left him near-completely poison-proof, a skill that comes in handy against the rather filthy Charlotte Linlin (Big Mom).]]
* OceanPunk: This is a One Piece story, so there is a ''lot'' of water.
* OhCrap: Since this is a ''Franchise/OnePiece'' fanfic, these moments are rather prevalent.
* TheOrder: The Navy, specifically, [[spoiler:the Dai Senmeibukai, who are the surviving military/scholarly/judicial nobility of Danara Marina]]. They also have a High Council that judges misconduct and major war crimes, regardless of what the World Government thinks usually.
** The concept of the Navy's high council, the "Assembly of the Flag Officers" is based upon the historical function of the House of Lords in the UK, which was (and still is) an assembly of the peerage; historically, they also were the highest legal court and the only ones allowed to judge treason and other nobility, reflected in the fact that, until the reforms of Tony Blair, the Lord Chancellor (leader of the House of Lords) was both the minister of justice and the Lord Speaker. The Assembly has yet to be seen in action, but it has been mentioned that Sakazuki has actually escaped its scrutiny (and a dishonourable death by hanging) multiple times thanks to the World Government.
* OriginalCharacter:
** Gol D. Andrea (Ace’s twin) and the Kumori siblings (Smoker's siblings).
** Since we don’t see much of the private lives of the canon Marines, a lot of the kind pop up as friends, comrades and family; also, two major characters of the continuity are created by Okinawa Angel (Andrea) respective Kamikashi (Theodora).
* PassThePopcorn: [[spoiler:While the Straw Hats and the Big Mom Pirates duke it out on who will be the next Yonkô, Sakazuki, his new crew and Isshô spend their time mostly drinking expensive tea and betting on the fight, specifically, the length and the style that Luffy lacks. [[AllAccordingToPlan In the meantime, the STOC/Fast-Attack fleet they've brought is rounding up the Big Mom Pirates that have been defeated, snatching islands under the woman's control like candy]].]]
* PerspectiveFlip: Especially the second story is not told from the perspective of the Straw Hats, but that of the Marines.
* {{Precursors}}: The Ancient Kingdom, [[spoiler:''Danara Marina''. The name is a reference to the famed quote from the ''Aeneid'' by Virgil, ''“Timeo Danaos et dona ferentes”'' ("I fear the Danaans [Greeks], even those bearing gifts"), and the kingdom’s undisputed rule over the oceans at the height of power. Dating back from the Void Century, they were incredibly powerful, but due to a corrupt usurper, their nobility sold the kingdom out to the alliance which later became the World Government. This alliance is known to the Dai Senmei, their descendants, as the Dragon Alliance. They left their Poneglyphs, the letters to their descendants, all over the world, chronicling the events of the Void Century. Due to their nature as letters, telling the world of what exactly they say is considered akin to treason. The modern Navy is basically the only other thing what's left of it.]]
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: Andrea has been on the giving and receiving end of this, and probably will be quite a few times again. The most likely givers among Marines are Theodora and Sengoku. Theo’s first one (see The Jailbait Wait in the character section) left Andy disgusted with ''herself''.
* TheReveal: Played with twice and then performed in Chapters 26 and 27 of Andrea’s Awakening.
* RunningGag: Given the large cast, there are quite a few, usually one or two per character.
** Garp either accidentally gets Andrea sick or hurts her when he greets her after a mission.
** Kizaru always manages to find out (unintentionally) Andy’s measurements.
** The TrademarkFavouriteFood of the Navy are pot stews, particularly ''East Indian/Vietnamese Style Curry Stew'', for which the Navy chefs are famous; there exists a regular competition among the cooks for the best recipe, and the officers at Marineford fight for the best seats at the weekly curry. But the extremes Garp, Sakazuki and Shirotatsu's [[TeamChef Chef de Cuisine Chef Stroganoff]] go to surrounding the dish are ridiculous even by Navy standards.
*** Andrea speculates that Sakazuki's devil fruit runs on spicy curry, as apparently Luffy's and Ace's run on BBQ.
** The song ''La Paloma'' becomes the traditional Navy equivalent NotSoInnocentWhistle.
** After Andy’s initial re-training from heaven and hell, even the thought of angering Theo sends her into a {{madness mantra}}. Same goes for any training schedule.
** Both Theo and Kuzan have the habit of [[RightBehindMe suddenly appearing out of the off]], usually somewhere halfway asleep, much to the groans of Andrea and Sakazuki. They also are notorious for sleeping on their respective desks (see in the character section SleepyHead); Theo even keeps a pillow shaped like an open book there for that express purpose.
* ShoutOut:
** The second story title is a homage to ''VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaLinksAwakening''. The story is also initially a reference to that, as Andrea falls into a coma at the end of ''Perils'' and wakes up in a strange new world in ''Awakening''.
** Andy's destroyer-class (somewhere between a frigate and a battleship) ship made of kurokaya is called ''Inaieu'', which is a heavy destroyer from the ''Franchise/StarTrekExpandedUniverse'' Rihannsu series.
* ThemeNaming: All the admiral's light frigates are named for adjectives that end in the ''-less''-suffix. The other two ships they all have at their personal disposal (battle cruiser, Trafalgar Astute class fast attack submarine) are usually named in the vein of the respective admiral's personal theme/colour scheme (which is why Theodora of all people manages to have a heavy cruiser called ''Revolution'').
* TimeSkip: Just like in the manga/anime, but, to accommodate some storytelling, it’s '''three''' years instead of the canon '''two'''.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood:
** The Navhy has pot stews, particularly ''East Indian/Vietnamese Style Curry Stew'', for which the Navy chefs are famous; there exists a regular competition among the cooks for the best recipe, and the officers at Marineford fight for the best seats at the weekly curry. But the extremes Garp, Sakazuki and Shirotatsu's [[TeamChef Chef de Cuisine Chef Stroganoff]] go to surrounding the dish are ridiculous even by Navy standards.
** Andrea also speculates that Sakazuki's devil fruit runs on spicy curry, as apparently Luffy's and Ace's run on BBQ.
