One stupid dare. That's all it takes to change someone's life forever.

Izuku Midoriya has no idea what he's getting into when his former ChildhoodFriend-turned-bully Katsuki Bakugo pressures him into creeping into an abandoned, dilapidated mansion on the outskirts of town. He doesn't chicken out like his bully anticipates, instead finding his way into a library. There, Izuku is compelled to swipe a brilliant red book written in a strange language from the shelf before darting out. That's when a freak storm blows in and drags Izuku away in a rush of muddy water. Clinging to a log for dear life, the poor, Quirkless kid thinks he's finished as he's swept beneath the churning stream.

He comes to in the hospital, having been tended to by one [[ComicBook/DoctorStrange Doctor Stephen Strange]]. Unfortunately, Strange had not saved Izuku in time, as the boy's hands had been crushed in the accident, leaving them trembling and nearly useless. Now legally a cripple, Izuku thinks his dreams are kaput until the day he's to be released from the hospital when Strange offers him an alternative: become a hero with magic in place of a Quirk. And so one powerless boy takes his first steps towards becoming a Master of the Mystic Arts to protect his dimension and all others.

''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/13051044/1/Of-Quirks-and-Magic Of Quirks and Magic]]'' is a ''Creator/MarvelComics''/''Manga/MyHeroAcademia'' FusionFic written by [=MysticMartyr=] that combines the Marvel Universe and the Quirk-filled world of My Hero Academia into one. It follows Izuku's perilous journey to become a spell-slinging savant and defender of humanity from both villains and the forces beyond.

----
!!''Of Quirks and Magic'' provides examples of:

* AdaptationOriginConnection:
** Power Loader is said to have provided support items for the founding members of the Avengers. [[spoiler:He's also deeply troubled by his part in producing Ultron.]]
** In-canon, the Nomus are humans that have been altered irreparably through mad science and All For One's Quirk. Here, they are Mindless Ones ({{Humanoid Abomination}}s made from humans corrupted by Dormammu's power) enhanced by All For One, turning the Nomus designed to kill All Might as a bigger juggernaut than in-canon, All Might needing a power boost by Doctor Strange's magic just to fight on an even playing field.
* AdaptationalBadass: While Izuku was impressive in-canon with the power of "One For All" and the HeroicWillpower to wield it, the Izuku here possesses powers that much better complement his analytical mind. Having been taught by the greatest sorcerer in this dimension for 18 months (one that encourages a JackOfAllTrades skillset and the flexibility to use them all in any practical situation), Izuku has become a ChildProdigy in the use of a power that no Quirk-user in his class can properly comprehend or anticipate, experience to danger that allows him to adapt quickly when the class has their first encounter with the League of Villains and has since met with various high-ranking pros ranging from All Might to Iron Man and Spider-Man. This results in Izuku becoming one of the top three on the Entrance Exam's score-board with [[SuperpowerLottery an impressive, powerful, and extremely versatile "quirk"]], a positive personality that endears him to nearly all of his classmates and "TheAce" status in his class and possibly the rest of the Hero-Course.
* AdaptationalSuperpowerChange:
** Instead of One For All, Izuku learns magic from Doctor Strange, giving him access to a variety of spells, including [[ThinkingUpPortals portal-making]], [[PlayingWithFire fire whips]], and [[ShockAndAwe the ability to shoot lightning from his hands.]]
** Seeing that Izuku is in good hands, All Might ends up passing down One For All to someone different. [[spoiler:That someone is Kirishima, whom he met under similar circumstances.]]
* AlliterativeName: Most of the magical relics and artifacts have names like the Stygian Sceptre of Seamless Shadow or the Flaming Foo Furnace of Fujian. Izuku lampshades this, along with how the Cloak of Levitation seems to be one of the only real exceptions to this rule.
-->'''Izuku:''' T-those names really roll off the tongue, huh?
* AntagonistAbilities: Deconstructed through Club Fear. Club Fear are a group of general studies students who were born with Quirks described by others as "Evil", something that has negatively affected them psychologically, leaving them open to being manipulated by [[spoiler:Nightmare]].
** Kizuka's Quirk "Fearmonger" allows her to read the fears of others and manifest them as illusions only the person affected can see. Her own parents disowned her when they could not handle her abilities and has been a ward of the system ever since. Her resentment for getting a powerful Quirk that everyone hates her for using in a world that encourages people to show them off has given her a rather sociopathic apathy towards others, repeatedly using her Quirk on innocent people out of rebellion. She only wanted to be a hero because she didn't want to be outdone by Jiro rather than any heroic motives and ended up allying herself with [[spoiler: Nightmare]] at the expense of others, making her both the founder of Club Fear and its TokenEvilTeammate.
** Ryou and Hyou possess the quirks "Ghost Body" and "Hijack" respectably, allowing them to [[AstralProjection enter the Astral-plane]] full-bodied and [[TwoBeingsOneBody take possession of another person through fusion]] respectably. On top of being seen as scary to other people, their Quirks were useless to the Entrance Exam and thus they failed to make it into the Hero Course.
** [[BadPowersGoodPeople Shinso's]] "Brainwashing" Quirk is seen as villainous because his abilities rob others of their free will. While bitter that his abilities were useless in the Hero Course Entrance exam, he is the only member of the club who does not let his bitterness blind him to Kizuka's sadistic personality, [[TokenGoodTeammate having only joined so that he can thwart them]] and [[PragmaticHero be seen as worthy of entering the Hero Course before the U.A. Festival]].
** [[spoiler:Shoto Todoroki joined the club out of a mix of psychological manipulation by Kizuka and his own hatred for his father's Quirk, hoping the ritual they intend to do will purge him of [[PlayingWithFire his father's Quirk]]]].
* AntiMagic: Kurogiri's Quirk is able to disrupt magical spells like Izuku's whips and portals with his fog, causing them to dissipate harmlessly.
* AstralProjection:
** Izuku tries to pick it up before he attends U.A., but his knowledge is incomplete and he doesn't know how to turn his projection visible at first. He's first seen using it to [[spoiler:overlook the aftermath of the USJ incident after his physical body is knocked unconscious from TakingTheBullet for Kaminari.]]
** Doctor Strange is a master of this, using it to study even while his physical body is sleeping. He later uses it to temporarily merge with All Might at USJ and feed him magical energy, as their opponent, [[spoiler:a Nomu-Mindless One hybrid, is too strong for either of them to take on alone.]]
** Ryou's "Ghost Body" Quirk allows him to enter the astral plane full-bodied. Since he is unfamiliar with sorcery, not only does he have a different name for the astral plane, but he assumes Izuku's ability to astral project is just a Quirk similar to his own.
* BadWithTheBone: Ikiji was born with the Quirk "Bone Spurs", giving him powers related to weaponizing and regrowing his own bones. At first [[RequiredSecondaryPowers it caused his body great harm whenever he used it considered it tore through his skin and muscles whenever he uses it]], but after training in sorcery, he learned how to control it properly, being able to create weapons and armor using his bones.
* BadassCape: Izuku is presented with his own Cloak of Levitation after training at the Kamar-Taj. It's identical to Strange's aside from being fitted to Izuku's size and colored green. It's also similarly sentient and feisty, beating Izuku over the head after he keeps it in his backpack all day.
* BarrierWarrior: Taking after his teacher, Izuku's most commonly used spell is to simply create mandalas of magic around his hands to deflect attacks, expanding them to defend against larger attacks and to protect others. It's used against him while he's being tested by Wong, who rips them out of his hands and use them as makeshift flails.
* TheCameo: When Izuku visits the stands for Stark Expo, he meets Generalissimo, the Grandfather of modern Pro Heroes - also known as Creator/StanLee. Fittingly, his Quirk is about making his words a reality, and he gives Izuku good counsel when he is in doubt.
* TheCavalry: Strange is the Sorcerer Supreme and thus the mightiest human sorcerer on Earth. Izuku is quick to call him in whenever the good guys are being overrun by villains and things tend to get better when Strange is around. All Might, being the HopeBringer, is naturally this for the traditional heroes.
* CentipedesDilemma: Izuku struggles to learn how to tap into magic at first due to his constant attempts to control it rather than letting it flow through him. He only gets even more frustrated when Strange tells him to surrender control if he wishes to control magic. Then Strange takes a page out of the Ancient One's book to teach it to Izuku [[DieOrFly the hard way]].
* CentralTheme: The coping of trauma. Stephen repeatedly mentions that while pain is an inevitability, it is how people process and deal with hardship that defines them. While the likes of Ikiji and Kaecilius give in to their pain and use sorcery for selfish purposes, it is Izuku's desire to learn magic to prevent and alleviate the suffering ''of others'' in spite of his hard life and crippling injury that led to Stephen choosing Izuku to be his apprentice.
* ChekhovsGun: The book that Izuku tried to obtain back in the prologue because of Bakugou's dare makes its return... [[spoiler:under the hands of General Education student Kizuka Yuuku [[WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds who wants to use it to prove the world wrong]].]]
* TheChosenOne: Downplayed. While in the midst of Wong's trial of heart, Izuku begins to succumb to painful flashbacks and memories stirred up by the relics he's fighting. That's when Strange's Cloak of Levitation flies out to comfort and support him, which both Strange and Wong find interesting, as relics choose their wielders.
* ClarkesThirdLaw: Inverted. Since magic is still a secret to most people, Izuku gets away with using sorcery in U.A. by explaining it away as [[SuperpowerLottery an extremely versatile energy-manipulating emitter Quirk]].
* ClothingCombat: The Vermillion Vambraces of Vexation will automatically wrap around the highest source of energy in Izuku's vicinity at his command, binding them much like Aizawa's capture weapon. Unfortunately, they only go so far against foes with SuperStrength, as Izuku gets reeled in when Kirishima resists them during their fight in the Heroes vs. Villains exercise.
* CollapsingLair: After Brigand is defeated, he takes the first chance he gets to flee the heroes, blowing up the warehouse where he keeps his stolen goods in an attempt to cover his tracks and kill his pursuers.
* ColorMotif: Izuku's is green, from his hair, to his eyes, to the color of his cloak. He even swaps out his trademark red shoes for green boots while in costume.
* DeadFic: Hasn't been updated since mid-2019.
* DieOrFly: Downplayed. To get Izuku to surrender his control of magic, Strange locks him in an infinitely long hallway flooded with water: Izuku either lets go and successfully makes a portal to escape, or he drowns. Strange wasn't ''actually'' going to drown him and considers fetching him in about a minute, but Izuku manages to tap into the Sling Ring and make his portal.
* DisabledInTheAdaptation: Izuku's hands were crushed by the rocks, churning waters, and the log before Doctor Strange could save him. As a result, he can barely grip anything, much less move it, and his hands are always shaking. He isn't able to feed or dress himself and his heart sinks when he realizes he won't be able to help others in this state. More than a year of training with Strange has restored some of Izuku's ability to use his hands, but he's still lacking in some dexterity and strength, barely managing to produce 10 kg of force during Aizawa's Quirk Apprehension Test.
* DoesNotLikeMagic: Tomura possesses a knee-jerk dislike for Ikiji and his contributions to the League, with Kurogiri being more tolerant but still uneased by him. Tomura describes this as comparing magic to "cheat codes", taking out [[VictoryIsBoring the satisfaction of victory by making it arbitrarily easier]].
* DoesNotLikeSpam: Strange admits his Tibetan butter tea is an acquired taste, but Izuku abhors it to the point that Strange tells Inko to pour some of it down Izuku's throat if she ever needs to break him out of deep meditation.
* DontYouDarePityMe: When Strange declares that he's Quirkless, Izuku screams at him to stop lying to give him false hope. At the same time, he's desperately curious and wants to know more.
-->'''Izuku:''' ''[bitter whispering]'' You don't have to lie, you know, You don't have to make stuff up just to try and make me feel better.\
'''Strange:''' ''[frowning]'' Young man, I assure you-\
'''Izuku:''' ''[crying and glaring daggers]'' How could you even say all of that with a straight face! You already know I'm Quirkless! My hands are shaking and ruined! I can't even eat on my own! And now you're telling me...you're telling me that you're Quirkless despite having so many abilities!? I don't want to hear any of that! I don't want to be told that a Quirkless loser like me can have that kind of power! I don't need you feeling sorry for me! ''[struggles to point accusingly at him]'' [[PunctuatedForEmphasis I. Don't. Need. Your. Pity!]]
* EmpathicWeapon: Izuku's Cloak of Levitation is feisty, expressive, and fully sentient.
* EmpoweredBadassNormal: Stephen Strange is a powerful magic user who is on a first-name basis with the world's top pro-heroes and has saved the multiverse more times than he could mention while being ''Quirkless'', having [[EnlightenmentSuperpowers learned his powers through practice and esoteric knowledge]]. The same can apply to Izuku, being a Quirkless boy with a natural affinity to the art just like him.
* FanBoy: Izuku, full stop. It's lampshaded by Stark after Peter webs Izuku to a wall by mistake.
-->'''Stark:''' ''[in his head]'' Great. I asked for a perp and fate throws me a fanboy...\
'''Izuku:''' ''[ecstatic]'' Spider-Man used his own special webbing on me! A shear-thinning long-chain polymer formula with a consistency far tougher than that of nylon!\
'''Stark:''' Yep. Fanboy.
* FlawExploitation: While sorcerers capable of bending space and matter in the real world and the Mirror Dimension are a massive threat, this can only be done with ''solid'' matter, leaving liquids and the air untouched and making Izuku's Cloak of Levitation the best kind of tool when facing such an opponent.
* {{Foil}}: Doctor Strange to Izuku. Both are Quirkless practitioners of the Mystic Arts. But Strange was initially a self-centered and hedonistic surgeon who alienated others with his pride and intelligence, while Izuku is a down-on-his-luck kid constantly wracked with self-doubt as he was ostracized from his peers by his Quirklessness and desire to become a hero.
* FusionFic:
** In this story, many of Marvel's heroes are active in America and highly ranked, with Iron Man as America's Number Two Hero and Spider-Man as the Number 10 Hero. The characters themselves seem to be primarily based on their depictions in the ''Franchise/MarvelCinematicUniverse''.
** Power Loader once worked with the Avengers to help produce their technology and gear. [[spoiler:He's also responsible for helping to create Ultron.]]
* TheGift: Downplayed in Izuku's case. He lacks the PhotographicMemory and ridiculous genius of his mentor, but Strange notes that Izuku possesses an innate knack for magic once he gets past the basics, quickly picking up a variety of spells and holding his own against far more experienced opponents. Strange even taunts Ikiji, who has been studying magic for longer and draws power from the Dark Dimension, for failing to beat Izuku, whom he declares Ikiji's superior.
* GuiltComplex: Kaminari's Quirk allows him to discharge a high-voltage of electricity, but unlike Izuku's Bolts of Bedevilment, it is indiscriminate and he has accidentally harmed his friends and allies with it, something he feels immense guilt over.
* HaveWeMetYet: Logan is surprised to see Izuku and asks him what he's doing in a bar. Izuku is confused, as he's never met Logan before, prompting Logan to mutter "This must be you from ''before'' that time." Later on, the two introduce themselves properly, but Logan says he already knows Izuku's name.
* TheHeart: Having learned the dangers of taking on a pupil with a knack for magic and a history of trauma through Ikiji, it's Izuku's selfless wish to become a hero that convinced Stephen to take him as an apprentice. It is not until Wong puts him through the Test of Heart does he concede to agree.
* HerosEvilPredecessor: Ikiji Kokotsu was Doctor Strange's previous pupil, but he became a follower of Dormammu and sought darker and darker methods to gain power.
* HeroWorshipper:
** Izuku's adoration for heroes is one of his defining traits. He knows nearly everything about all but the most obscure heroes off the top of his head and rattles it off without a second thought. His first response to the arrival of any hero is to {{Squee}} and he's an especially hardcore fan of All Might.
** Peter is one for Stark, treating him with the utmost respect. Peter sings about Stark when no one is looking and is always looking for chances to impress him.
* HistoryRepeats:
** Doctor Strange sees himself in Izuku when seeing the boy despair over his crippled hands. This, along with Izuku's earnest wish to become a hero to help others, is what inspires Strange to take Izuku under his wing.
*** The way Izuku and Kirishima work together to take down the Zero-Pointer during the Entrance Exam - Izuku giving Kirishima support while Kirishima does the heavy-hitting - is almost ''exactly'' how Doctor Strange and All Might handle a threat when ''they'' work together.
** Power Loader chastises Hatsume for trying to produce an AI based on Izuku's brain patterns, listing Ultron as an example of the potential danger such a thing could cause and forces her to dismantle it. [[spoiler:His worry is based on experience: he helped create Ultron.]]
* HomingProjectile: The Vaulting Boots of Valtorr and the Vermillion Vambraces of Vexation are designed to be used like this. The boots will shower magical energy on Izuku's opponent when he jumps over them, prompting the vambraces to fly out and wrap around them like Aizawa's capture weapon.
* HopeIsScary: Izuku initially thinks that Strange is mocking him when the latter says he's Quirkless and angrily shouts at him to stop lying out of pity. Inko is similarly skeptical of Strange's offer to teach Izuku and wonders how much false hope her son can take after years of pining and yearning.
--> '''Inko:''' Just how much more hope can you stand to endure, Izuku...?
* IJustWantToBeFree: This is Kizuka's only reason for wanting to be a hero. Growing up being told her quirk is evil, she finds that heroes like All Might using their quirk has caused her to believe that being a hero means you can use your power freely, [[TruthInTelevision not unlike people who want to be police officers just so they can legally carry a gun.]] This infuriates Izuku because that is not what [[HopeBringer All Might]] stands for.
* TheIncorruptible: Wong asks Strange what makes Izuku different from Strange's previous pupil, who became an evil follower of Dormammu. Strange responds that Izuku's heroic heart is too strong for him to succumb to those kinds of dark influences, even as Izuku worries about Wong's concerns.
* InSpiteOfANail: A lot of things still happen as in canon despite Izuku's tutelage under Strange. He still gets attacked by the Sludge Villain, rushes to save Bakugo, learns about One For All, and gets elected class president. The USJ attack still happens and All Might has to bluff his way out after beating the Nomu.
* ItBeganWithATwistOfFate: The story begins with Izuku taking a dare to investigate an abandoned mansion instead of chickening out as Bakugo anticipated.
* JackOfAllTrades: Doctor Strange considers this to be preferable to suffering from CripplingOverspecialization, training Izuku in a variety of spells to prepare him for a wide array of situations. As a result, Izuku is able to adapt when facing more experienced and specialized fighters through clever use of basic spells like portals and fire whips.
* JerkassHasAPoint: Wong makes his distaste for Izuku known from the start and chastises Strange for taking a new pupil so hastily while he's in the midst of trying to find several important magical tomes, including the Darkhold. He also points out that the New York Sanctum Sanctorum can't be kept in Japan forever, lest the shield protecting Earth weaken, which is why Strange should still be looking for the books instead of wasting time with a child.
* KungFuWizard: Practitioners of the mystic arts are trained to train their bodies along with their minds. As a result, Izuku is reasonably fit and can hold his own against Kirishima in close combat with the help of barriers and gratuitous use of magical relics despite his obvious disadvantages as a SquishyWizard.
* LastOfHisKind: After Kaecilius and the rest of his zealots were cut down by the Masters of the Mystic Arts, Ikiji is the only remaining member to carry on his dream of merging the Earth with the Dark Dimension, having allied himself with All For One and becoming the League of Villain's TokenWizard out of desperation.
* LivingClothes: Izuku's Cloak of Levitation is alive and sentient, [[SilentSnarker silently snarking at its owner]] and beating him over the head when it's annoyed but loving and protecting its owner all the same.
* LockedOutOfTheLoop:
** Subverted in Inko's case. Despite the secretive nature of magic, Strange promised to tell her everything Izuku does while in his care. That includes any danger or mishaps he's gotten himself into, much to Izuku's chagrin.
** Played straight in regards to One For All. Izuku believes that All Might is still looking for a successor when he has already found one. [[spoiler:The destructive power Izuku is in awe of is not Kirishima's Hardening but One For All.]]
* MakeWrongWhatOnceWentRight: Izuku does this unintentionally when the League of Villains attacks Kamar-Taj. He uses the Eye of Agamotto in hopes of going back in time and stealing back the Book of Caligostro from Kurogiri, but he nearly gets sucked into the Timeless Aether and allows Ikiji to escape instead. He's immediately regretful after this and promises to never use it again.
* NamedByTheAdaptation: Several of the spells used by the Masters of the Mystic Arts are given names in this story. For instance, the energy/fire whips are called the Whips of Vastha.
* NotSoStoic: Aizawa completely loses his cool after learning of something as ridiculous as "magic" and desperately tries to rationalize it until, Nezu, All Might, and Strange talk him down.
* OffscreenMomentOfAwesome: To convince Aizawa that what he and Izuku really ''can'' do magic, Strange grabs him and vanished, Nedzu assuming that he took him on a brief trip through the multiverse. They reappear only moments, Aizawa shaken but otherwise convinced. Considering [[TimeMaster Stephen has mastery over the Eye of Agamotto and over time magic]], it is very likely that they were gone much longer than from Izuku, Nedzu, and All Might's perspective.
-->'''Doctor Strange''': Have you ever seen ''that'' in a talent show before?
* OnlyThePureOfHeart: When Stephen explains to Wong that Izuku's [[TheIncorruptible indomitable heart]] is why he chose him to be his apprentice, Wong decides to put him through the Test of Heart to be sure. Izuku is tasked with closing the lid of the Flaming Foo Furnace of Fujian, a powerful relic that summons foo dogs composed of fire. Along with the foo dogs, Wong uses the Stygian Sceptre of Seamless Shadow to conjure illusions that take the form of Izuku's guilt and insecurities. [[spoiler: Izuku manages to do it when Stephen's Cloak of Levitation carries him out of the scepter's smoke and above the foo dog's range, proving himself both worthy by completing the test and revealing that the notoriously fickle Cloak had chosen him as an alternate wielder.]]
* OurMinotaursAreDifferent: Rintrah is a green minotaur-like sorcerer at Kamar-Taj that teaches Izuku how to use {{Outside The Box Tactic}}s when wielding combat-magic.
* OutsideContextProblem: As versatile and unpredictable the world of Quirks [[spoiler:and aliens, if WordOfGod is to be believed in the case of Thor]] can be, magic is still kept a secret from the rest of the population. Since most superpowers in this world are something one is born with and is usually relegated to a single ability that requires training and imagination to be used productively, magic being something that anyone can learn with an open mind, imagination, and the right kind of teachers and the ''ridiculous'' number of applications that can come from it by comparison, any pro-hero that does not have prior knowledge of magic can easily be overwhelmed by the concept alone, much less when encountering a sorcerer with a villain's intent, and even then their best chance is to have a magic-user on their side.
* PapaWolf: Strange grows protective of Izuku as the months pass, to the point that his first question while arriving as TheCavalry at USJ is to ask where Izuku is. He's also fully willing to kill Ikiji, his former pupil if it means protecting Izuku.
* ParentalSubstitute: Since his own father spends most of his time abroad, Izuku and Stephen have developed a "Father/Son"-like bond, [[spoiler: Izuku ending up calling him "Dad" after Stephen collapses, having been shot by the Brigand's magic-piercing bullets.]]
* PerceptionFilter: The Sanctum Sanctorum is protected with a spell that makes it appear as a rickety old abandoned house and preventing those who aren't magically attuned from interacting with its contents. The fact that Izuku could proves he has an innate talent for magic.
* ThePowerOfHate: Izuku is apprehensive about learning the Bolts of Bedevilment because it requires him to tap into his negative emotions like anger and hatred, having personally met Ikiji and worried that he will turn out like him if he allows himself to dwell on such emotions. Stephen assures him that Izuku has the HeroicWillpower that makes him different from Ikiji, something he is proven right about as Izuku learns how to use the spell and uses it to fight evil.
* PrimaryColorChampion: His costume is primary blue, with a gold-trimmed cape and the Vermillion Vambraces of Valtor wrapped around his forearms.
* ProperlyParanoid: Power Loader refuses to let Mei create an AI based on Izuku's brain patterns, pointing out the destruction a similar AI, Ultron, wreaked in the past.
* APupilOfMineUntilHeTurnedToEvil: Doctor Strange had taken on one apprentice before Izuku named Ikiji Kokotsu. Like Izuku, he was a vulnerable boy who desperately craved power and attention. Ikiji was eventually lured in by Kaecilius' promise of salvation through Dormammu and turned to the dark arts for greater power.
* SecretKeeper:
** Izuku keeps the true nature of his abilities a secret to avoid stirring up chaos if knowledge that a Quirkless kid could wield incredible powers through training came to light. At first, the only ones in the know are Izuku, Inko, Strange, and the rest of the magical community.
** All Might is let in on the secret after the Sludge Villain incident, while Aizawa and Nezu learn about it shortly after Izuku begins attending U.A.
** After the USJ incident, Strange wants to let all of 1-A know after learning that U.A. has a target painted on its back, but Nezu declines, asking the three people caught up in Izuku's magical battle with Ikiji, [[spoiler:Jiro, Kaminari, and Yaoyorozu]] to keep quiet to contain the potential chaos.
* SecretTestOfCharacter: Stephen intentionally leaves the Eye of Agamotto out in the open at the library and has Wong called away when Izuku would be there, [[BatmanGambit knowing that Izuku would be curious enough about it to look into the Book of Cagliostro and would try to use the Eye himself with Wong no longer there to supervise him]] just to see what would happen. The results reveal to the others that Izuku is smart and gifted enough in sorcery to comprehend the instructions and activate the Eye despite only being a disciple. When confronted about why he would do something as reckless as dabble in [[TimeMaster time-magic]], Izuku admits to having thought of many different applications for such power in the case of saving lives and averting disasters.
* ShockAndAwe: By the time he attends U.A., Izuku's most powerful offensive spell is the Bolts of Bedevilment, which shoots a burst of high-voltage electricity comparable to Kaminari's in intensity. Kaminari notices this during the Entrance Exam and becomes mildly jealous; his own Quirk is electricity-based but also a danger to his allies due to his inability to aim it as Izuku can.
* ShoutOut: When Izuku tries to use the Eye of Agamotto to retrieve the Book of Cagliostro after it was stolen, he winds up trapped in a timeless void where he catches brief glimpses of himself from various alternate timelines. Such examples include a timeline where [[Manga/MyHeroAcademia he accepts Toshinori's offer to take "One For All"]], [[Fanfic/SoonIShallBeIndestructible he is technologically augmented by Mei]], [[Fanfic/ErasedPotential he is being trained by Aizawa to become a Quirkless hero]], he is an agent for Quirk Intelligence, [[https://archiveofourown.org/works/15159071 is an oni-masked serial killer]], [[Fanfic/{{Daymare}} he possesses a Lovecraftian Quirk]], is engulfed in impenetrable shadow where dark hands are crawling over him possessively and various timelines where he was just dead.
* SlaveToPR: Tony Stark, AKA Iron Man, doesn't report how some of his tech was recently stolen because of the panic that would ensue if the public learned of it. [[spoiler:This lets Brigand get away with an entire Iron Legion and the Hulkbuster Armor]].
* SpaceMaster: Sorcerers powerful enough to access the Mirror Dimension can bend space to their will within it, but Ikiji's dark magics allow him to manipulate space in the real world, so long as he's bending something tangible as a medium.
* SquishyWizard: Downplayed. While Izuku conditions his body at the Kamar-Taj and is trained in hand-to-hand combat, he's still lacking physically when compared to a bruiser like Kirishima and his crippled hands limit his close combat options. Even with the use of his shields, Izuku is often left reeling from enemy blows and is frequently PunchedAcrossTheRoom, but can hold his own regardless.
* SternTeacher: Wong treats Izuku harshly and frequently beats him into the ground to prove a point. He doesn't know what Strange sees in Izuku and is reluctant to teach him at first.
* SuperiorSuccessor: Strange believes that Izuku could potentially surpass him in time, given that he started training at a much earlier age.
* SupportPartyMember: When paired with All Might, Doctor Strange takes on this role, using his magic to protect and provide a boost to the already near-unstoppable All Might. This makes more sense in the present day, All Might's injury and passing his Quirk onto Kirishima making him much weaker and more vulnerable.
* TakingTheBullet:
** Strange takes a bullet for Izuku after Brigand holds him at gunpoint. To make matters worse, the bullet is instilled with a curse that can only be removed with the relic Brigand just stole as ransom for Izuku's life.
** While Kaminari is frozen in fear at USJ, Izuku [[spoiler:takes a blade of spacial energy to the chest for him]] and subsequently collapses.
* TimeStandsStill: To demonstrate magic to Izuku away from prying eyes, Strange freezes time at 9:10 a.m. on the day Izuku is to be released from the hospital.
* TokenWizard:
** Izuku winds up becoming this to Class 1-A (and the U.A. student body in general), being regarded as the first sorcerer in U.A.'s history of enrollment, with implications that he will be the first pro-hero whose powers are magical instead of Quirk or [[ScienceHero science]]-based. Of course, since [[{{Masquerade}} the existence of magic (and the psychological baggage that comes with it) is kept a secret from a majority of the population]], Izuku is seen more as TheAce for [[SuperpowerLottery having a "Quirk" with an unusually high number of different applications to it]].
** While it is clear that All For One possesses some knowledge of the mystical world, Ikiji becomes this for the League of Villains out of desperation after Kaecilius and the rest of his zealots were thwarted by the Masters of the Mystic Arts.
* TranquilFury: While Stephen is usually a TricksterMentor at his best and a SinkOrSwimMentor at his worst, he is usually an affable man who forgives the antics of his mentors. Whenever someone tries to harm his students or if they do something especially careless, his rage is described as "like a cold yet righteous fury", something Izuku sees firsthand [[spoiler:when he [[CurbStompBattle single-handedly dispatches the League of Villains when they invade Kamar-Taj]]]].
* ThinkingUpPortals: One of Izuku's most frequently used spells creates portals between two places that he has a clear mental image of. He gets a lot of mileage out of this, transporting himself to and from the Sanctum Sanctorum, redirecting allied attacks so they hit, and warping himself and others out of danger. By the time he gets to U.A., he's comfortable enough to casually open a portal from Japan to New York. Doctor Strange, the Sorcerer Supreme, is naturally even better at this.
* VitriolicBestBuds: Downplayed. The Cloak snuggles with Izuku affectionately when they first meet and happily drapes itself over Izuku's shoulders. They bicker from time to time when they're out of sync, but the two grow to trust each other deeply and the Cloak rushes to help Izuku and his friends whenever possible.
* TheVoiceless: The Cloak of Levitation doesn't have a mouth to speak with, but it certainly makes its presence known.
* WoundThatWillNotHeal: Strange is hit with a cursed bullet while protecting Izuku from Brigand. This renders him comatose and renders the wound impossible to heal until the curse is removed with the same relic Brigand stole.
* WrongContextMagic: Izuku passes off his magical abilities as a broad Emitter Quirk called "Energy Reign" and his magical relics as highly experimental support items from his teacher.
* YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre: After the Kamar-Taj weathers the League of Villains' attack on it, Izuku wonders if he'll ever end up like Ikiji: corrupted and consumed by a lust for power. Strange assures him that this will never happen, as Izuku's heart and desire to be a hero are too strong.
