There, Izuku is compelled to swipe a brilliant red book written in a strange language from the shelf before darting out. That's when a freak storm blows in and drags Izuku away in a rush of muddy water. Clinging to a log for dear life, the poor, Quirkless kid thinks he's finished as he's swept beneath the churning stream.

Unfortunately, Strange had not saved Izuku in time, as the boy's hands had been crushed in the accident, leaving them trembling and nearly useless. Now legally a cripple, Izuku thinks his dreams are kaput until the day he's to be released from the hospital when Strange offers him an alternative: become a hero with magic in place of a Quirk. And so one powerless boy takes his first steps towards becoming a Master of the Mystic Arts to protect his dimension and all others.

By the time he gets to U.A., he's comfortable enough to casually open a portal from Japan to New York. Doctor Strange, the Sorcerer Supreme, is naturally even better at this.
