The War for the Dawn has ended in a victory for the Night's King. In desperation, Bran Stark and Melisandre enact a plan to use a spell that will send the memories of the last surviving members of the Great Houses (Jon and Daenerys Targaryen, Jaime and Tyrion Lannister, and Sansa and Bran Stark) [[PeggySue into the past]] so that they can SetRightWhatOnceWentWrong and prepare Westeros better against the threat.

----
!! The fanfic has the following tropes:

* AchillesInHisTent: After his RageBreakingPoint below, Ned spends some time wallowing in his frustrations at all the changes his family's undergone, his still smoldering anger at having to trust Jaime, and his shame at having blown up like that in the first place.
* ActuallyPrettyFunny:
** Margaery and Dickon can't help but laugh at the audacity of the fact that the first thing they can think of that they have in common is that they were both burned to death.
** Daenerys lets out a genuine laugh when Talisa attempts to be DefiantToTheEnd to her.
* AdaptationDistillation: While the story is primarily based on the show, it still includes many secondary and tertiary characters from the books who were AdaptedOut.
** In the show, Littlefinger was revealed to be who sent the cutthroat after Bran, while Joffrey is implied to be the one who tried to have Tyrion killed during the Battle of the Blackwater. But the story goes with the books' interpretations that Joffrey was responsible for the former, while Cersei was for the latter.
** One of the subplots that shows up in the later chapters confirms that, as in the books, [[spoiler:the Citadel is trying to suppress magic, and that they went ''much further'' than just aiding in slaying the dragons -- they also arranged for the deaths of Luthor Tyrell and Joanna Lannister, and poisoned Aerys to exacerbate his madness]].
* AdaptationalNiceGuy: Quite a few of the cast have learned a few [[TookALevelInKindness lessons]] about behaving better after experiencing their own deaths, or being forced to work together to fight the White Walkers. Though some have [[AesopAmnesia learned nothing]] and want to try their hand at gaining the Throne again. And some others are simply changed for the better due to the butterfly effect.
** Viserys, of all people, is so overjoyed with his sister's quick rise to power and the knowledge of Jon being King of the North that he asks Jorah to train him to be a knight, so he can support their kingdom-to-be.
* AddedAlliterativeAppeal: Chapter 11 is called Pentos Pandemonium.
* AesopAmnesia: Balon learns nothing from the disastrous War of the Five Kings other than to distrust Euron. A furious Yara has him tossed into the dungeon when he threatens to restart the reaving of the North.
* AllForNothing:
** In the previous timeline, Stannis sacrificed his daughter for a victory he never got. Now in the new timeline, everyone knows about it, instantly destroying his reputation. All his men abandon him, Davos abandons him and takes Shireen with him (and Shireen Remembers to boot, meaning Stannis has lost her love too), and his wife hangs herself in shame. Having lost everything with nothing to show for it drives Stannis to drink before he arrives at the Red Keep and is thrown into a Black Cell by Robert.
** Even worse off is Tywin Lannister. Tywin did some truly deplorable things over the course of his life to elevate House Lannister's name, only to learn the legacy he fought for is a lie and be murdered by his dwarf son soon afterward. Now in the new timeline, not only does he Remember, but his actions and the actions of his descendants both before and after his death has caused every other Great House in Westeros to hate the Lannisters, making the family name weaker than it ever was before. Indeed, if it weren't for the looming threat of the White Walkers, they would've all banded together to wipe House Lannister off the map, something that his immediate family is keenly aware of. To pour even more salt in the wound, even his ''death'' was pointless. Tyrion murdered him because of the emotional abuse he endured all his life at Tywin's hands, emotional abuse that was only heaped on him because Tywin blamed him for Joanna's death. Except Tyrion wasn't responsible for Joanna's death -- [[spoiler: their maester Creylen murdered her by letting her bleed out after Tyrion was born]]. Ultimately, Tywin abused his son and then died for it for no reason.
* AltarDiplomacy:
** The original plan before things went to hell had several possible betrothals planned to prevent the War of Five Kings and allow Jon a peaceful transition to the throne. In particular, Jon was to marry Margaery Tyrell to secure the Reach, while Daenerys was to be married to Edmure or possibly even Robb to satisfy the North and the Riverlands (who are essentially a package deal). One would imagine that Sansa and Tyrion had others planned for other people as well, including themselves.
** Edmure marries Roslin again, this time to bind what's left of House Frey to House Tully, simultaneously preventing them from betraying them again while also honoring the Freys who ''did'' stay loyal to Robb in the previous timeline.
** Sam betroths his younger brother Dickon to Margaery in exchange for becoming Lord of the Reach and Warden of the South during the Long Night. Olenna instantly agrees, because it makes Dickon Mace's HeirInLaw (Loras having been killed by Jaime Lannister at King's Landing), which will finally get the Tarlys and the Florents off the Tyrells' backs. Notably, Sam himself refuses to do this, only having eyes for Gilly.
** Robert made plans to betroth Shireen to Robb and make the latter his HeirInLaw as an apology to House Stark for all they suffered thanks to his death. [[UnstoppableRage Then he found out about Jon]].
* AmbiguousSituation: Since Hodor can't exactly communicate with everyone else, it's not clear whether or not he Remembers.
* AncientConspiracy: [[spoiler: A cabal within the Maesters have been manipulating events for millennia to control the development of Westerosi society, repress knowledge of magic, and (more recently) bring down the Targaryen dynasty.]] Having discovered this shortly before the old timeline ended, Sam and a group of Reach lords spread the word and spearhead a purge of all those involved, [[spoiler:especially when it turns out they're responsible for killing Alerie and Luthor Tyrell. They also killed Joanna Lannister by causing her to bleed to death and they fed Aerys drugs that heavily contributed to his madness.]]
* AndThisIsFor: Sandor to Joffrey [[NoHoldsBarredBeatdown before beating him to death]]. With a [[PrecisionFStrike f-bomb thrown in for good measure]].
-->'''Sandor:''' Fuck the King. This is for the Little Bird.
* ArbitrarySkepticism: Even some of the people who Remember but didn't make it to the Long Night don't believe that the Others are real and coming, despite the blatantly magical nature of their situation. Tyrion even cites it as one of the reasons why Tywin has to be overthrown -- his stubbornness means he'll never believe them about the Others until he sees them for himself.
* ArcWords: After the spell finishes, one of the key phrases asked around the kingdoms is, "Do you remember?"
* ArchEnemy:
** The Night King is this to all of humanity, but ''especially'' to members of the Night's Watch (former, current, and future), and above all else, to Jon Targaryen. Jon is so determined to defeat him that he's willing to spare most of his human enemies and send them to the Wall just so the living can have more swords against the encroaching army of the dead.
** Robert Baratheon to House Targaryen, stemming from his grudge against Rhaegar. While both Jon and Daenerys are willing to make peace with him if it means a united Westeros against the Others, they both regard warring with Robert an inevitability, because not even the Others will be enough to convince Robert to give up the hatred he has for their family.
* ArmorPiercingQuestion: When Renly swears to Robert that he will never rise against the King, Robert responds by asking why it's okay for him to rebel against Stannis but not Robert. Renly can't come up with a satisfactory reply, and Robert angrily dismisses him.
* ArrangedMarriage: To secure the Tyrells' loyalty, Sam arranges to have Margaery marry Dickon.
* AscendedFanon: One commentator on AH.com dubbed the rock that Edmure used to killed Black Walder as "the Tully Rock of Doom". Many chapters later, Tyrion notes that people in-universe have started calling it that as well. Furthermore, that same AH.com commentator later went so far as to write a song about "the Rock of Doom" (after a song title was mentioned in Chapter 37), which was later incorporated into the story.
* AscendedFridgeHorror: With the timeline being reset, certain choices lead to certain outcomes, and thus many of the children conceived and born in that time end up no longer existing. Chapter 44 confirms this as [[spoiler:Little Sam]] was erased from history. Just how many other children have been {{Retgone}}d?
* AssassinationAttempt: [[spoiler: Shae sneaks into Tyrion's solar and tries to kill him, but is interrupted by Jaime.]]
* AssholeVictim: In a world where KinslayingIsASpecialKindOfEvil is in full effect, absolutely no one blames Jaime for killing Cersei in the previous timeline. By the time she was finally dead, she had descended so far into madness that the only unfortunate part of the situation is the fact that Jaime was the one to do it.
* AsskickingLeadsToLeadership: To everyone's surprise, the Thenns [[KneelBeforeFrodo kneel to Jon voluntarily]], on the grounds that they follow strength and he showed it by killing Styr in their one fight.
* AuthorityInNameOnly:
** Robert. He's still the ''official'' king of Westeros, but with every kingdom sans Dorne and the Stormlands pledging themselves to House Targaryen, it's only a matter of time before he's deposed and Jon takes his rightful place on the Iron Throne. Fittingly, everyone except him knows this; thanks to all communication with King's Landing being purposefully stifled by the other kingdoms, he's only aware of the Westerlands and the Riverlands rising in rebellion. He doesn't know that the North, the Vale, the Reach, and the Iron Islands are doing so as well. Since Dorne barely respected his authority to begin with and is currently embroiled in their own Civil War, Robert only really rules the Stormlands and the Crownlands.
** Ned and Catelyn Stark are officially the heads of House Stark. In reality, only Robb and Rickon actually listen to them -- Bran and Arya do whatever they want, Sansa has usurped Catelyn's place as Lady of Winterfell due to nobody trusting her mother anymore and only listens to Jon, and Jon himself is Lord of the Seven Kingdoms so his orders supersede theirs at almost every level. They're not taking the sudden reversal in authority very well, to say the least.
** With Jon Arryn dead and Lysa having gone completely off the deep end, their son Robin is the current Lord Paramount of the Vale and the Head of House Arryn. However, he's currently a child (and a very sheltered one at that) who's nowhere close to his majority, so all the power is in the hands of his new regent and caretaker, Bronze Yohn Royce.
* AwesomeMomentOfCrowning: The Northern Houses swearing fealty to Jon Targaryen.
* AwfulTruth:
** Alliser Thorne doesn't take the news that he organized the murder of Prince Rhaegar's son none too well.
** Catelyn Stark ''finally'' discovers that Jon Snow is not her husband's bastard, but rather his nephew, with his parents being Rhaegar and Lyanna. And that's nothing compared to finding out about Arya becoming a Faceless Man.
** The Northern lords learn of Aerys' Wildfire plot and just how near death they all were when invading King's Landing when Bran explains why Jaime Lannister is now their ally.
** Apparently, Tommen was unaware that Jaime was his real father when he died, having believed all the rumors to be vicious slander. He does ''not'' take it well, to the point of spurning Jaime and preferring to be a bastard instead of a Lannister.
** This is how Maester Cressen, Lord Rosby, and Renly feel about finding out that Jon Snow is Jon Targaryen, the implications of it for Ned's loyalties, and the fact that they have to tell all this to Robert. And of course, Robert himself doesn't take the news even remotely well.
** Viserys is horrified to learn that his last act before his death in the old timeline was to threaten to kill Daenerys.
** The [[spoiler:Maester Conspiracy]] reveals a number of them. To wit:
*** Joanna Lannister did ''not'' suffer DeathByChildbirth. [[spoiler:Maester Creylen instead let her bleed to death in order to make her husband Tywin one of the Maesters' pawns in their plot to end the Targaryen dynasty]].
*** Both Luthor and Alerie Tyrell were murdered by [[spoiler:Maester Lomys. The former's horse was poisoned, which led to it jumping off a cliff with Luthor on it. Alerie was also poisoned, leading to her suffering several miscarriages until her body finally gave out]].
*** Robert's Rebellion was entirely orchestrated by [[spoiler:the Maesters]], who burnt missives from Rhaegar, Lyanna ''and'' Elia, which presumably explained the truth about the "kidnapping". That led to Rickard and Brandon Stark's deaths, which kickstarted the Rebellion and the eventual downfall of the Targaryen dynasty.
* BackForTheDead:
** Joffrey and Doreah return... only for Sandor and Irri to kill each, respectively, a sentence or two later. And while Baelish doesn't Remember, as soon as he shows up, he is instantly killed by Jaime.
** Loras Tyrell is killed not long after he reunites with Renly.
** After realizing that her dreams aren't dreams and that she really did consent to having Shireen burned to death, Selyse Baratheon commits suicide again.
* BackFromTheDead: Thanks to the Remembering spell functioning as a big ResetButton, everyone who died during the events of the series is brought back. Averted for Jon Arryn - the original plan was to send everyone back to before his murder, but with everything else that went wrong, they all arrive at the point in time just after he was killed.
* BaitAndSwitch: Hodor talks like a normal person in the first chapter. Ned even calls him by his real name, Wylis... and then Bran reveals that he was warging into him to get Robb off of Theon. He goes back to his usual PokemonSpeak immediately afterwards.
* BearsAreBadNews: [[spoiler: Ramsay]] gets mauled to death by a [[spoiler:Stark warged]] bear while out hunting.
* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor: After returning, Arya wishes people would respect her instead of treating her like Arya Underfoot again. Then, the Riverlanders come and reveal what Arya did to the Freys in the original timeline - and people stop treating her like Arya Underfoot, because they are bloody scared of [[TheDreaded her]].
* BerserkButton: Finding out about the Lannisters' various betrayals infuriates Robert. Finding out about the existence of Jon Targaryen enrages him. Finding out Jon Targaryen is Jon Snow and that Ned Stark has betrayed him sends him into an UnstoppableRage.
* BewilderingPunishment: Anyone who doesn't remember and ends up getting judged for something they did in the previous timeline essentially feels this. Cersei (who gets tossed into the dungeon) and Roose Bolton in particular stand out.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: [[spoiler:Mace Tyrell, after hearing of his Maester's role in the deaths of his father and wife, slides behind him as he's getting screamed at by Olenna and Leyton Hightower, and backstabs him before he can even register his presence.]]
* BigBrotherInstinct:
** Jaime for Tyrion. He rushes to save him when he realizes that [[spoiler:Shae is about to try and kill him]], and later makes it clear that if it wasn't for Tyrion's own insistence, he'd [[spoiler: send her to Slaver's Bay or kill her]].
** Viserys, [[HiddenDepths surprisingly]], has a moment of this when he sees Daenerys light herself on fire to hatch her dragons anew. He makes a mad dash to the flames to try and save her and has to be held back by ''multiple'' men to keep from going in after her.
* TheBigDamnKiss:
** Jaime greets Brienne with one when they're reunited. Also counts as a ShutUpKiss, as she's in the middle of berating him for making it so hard for her to track him down.
** Jon greets Ygritte with one, then immediately admits that it was a mistake considering that he's with Daenerys now.
* BigWhat:
** Ned's outraged reaction to hearing that Jaime is an ally now.
** Doran's reaction to learning how [[spoiler: the Maester conspiracy killed his mother's friend Joanna Lannister]].
* BlatantLies: Meryn Trant claims that in the old timeline, he died fighting a group of Braavosi mercenaries trying to assassinate Mace Tyrell (as opposed to being jumped by Arya in a whorehouse before he could try to rape more little girls).
* BloodMagic:
** What Bran and Melisandre use to enact the ritual.
** Daenerys uses ancient blood-powered spells from Old Valyria to both hatch her eggs and make her dragons grow immediately to adulthood.
* BothSidesHaveAPoint: The discussion Bran, Jon, and Sansa have about informing Ned over what happened in the old timeline. Since too many remember, Bran feels that Ned should be informed of everything by them before someone else enlightens him, while Jon and Sansa want to spread out the information as to ensure that Ned is not overwhelmed.
* BreakTheHaughty: Cersei starts as Queen of the Seven Kingdoms and loses it all in a single day. She’s held at dagger point by Renly, hears her brother telling her captor to kill her, is thrown in a Black Cell, has all her titles removed, and then has her ''recently killed son’s corpse'' thrown in with her. To top it all off, she doesn’t Remember, so she has no idea why everything suddenly changed completely overnight.
* BreatherEpisode: Chapter 41 features [[spoiler:the revelation that Euron has died, the possibility of the Night King remembering, and the knowledge that Winter is coming much faster in this timeline than it did before]]. By contrast, Chapter 42 features the Starks reuniting with the Night's Watch, as well as half a chapter of ShipTease between Shireen and Rickon.
* BringMyBrownPants:
** Lothar Frey repeatedly wets and soils himself. First when Black Walder is brutally beaten to death in front of him, then when told he's going to be given to Robb Stark, and then when he meets Arya Stark at Winterfell.
** Played for laughs when [[spoiler:Ned Umber]] complains that one of the worst things about having his infant's body is the difficulty he has in not making a mess of himself.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: Tyrion’s narration points out that this is one of Bronn’s many good qualities: for all his joking and cynicism, he’s also very quick to realize when a situation requires him to be silent, serious, and just doing his job.
* TheCavalry: In Chapter 46, [[spoiler: the Children of the Forest arrive to save the Northerner/Wildling camp by helping drive off the White Walkers attacking it]].
* ChurchMilitant: The Faith Militant try to regain a foothold in King's Landing post-Remembering. Unfortunately for them, the king currently in charge of the city is not the weak-willed Tommen, the easily-manipulable Joffrey nor even the merciful Jon, but instead "The Demon of the Trident", [[BloodKnight Robert Baratheon]].
* CivilWar: Dorne suffers this, first due to Doran and his loyalists remembering what Ellaria and the Sand Snakes did in the old timeline and exacting revenge (causing the guards to turn on each other, unsure of what's going on), and when things calm down after that, many other Houses rise against the Martells, either out of revenge for family who were killed in the crossfire or because they see them as weakened now and ripe for being overthrown.
* CoitusInterruptus: Tyrion, after confirming that the plan has gone to hell, bursts into Kevan's room to see if he Remembers...and interrupts him while he's in the middle of screwing his wife Dorna.
* ComedicSociopathy: Edd takes savage glee in telling Thorne the truth of Jon's birth, and keeps a wide smile long after. He compares the experience positively to bedding a willing woman.
* ConflictKiller: The Others tend to have that effect. For particular examples:
** Jonos Bracken and Tytos Blackwood's lifelong feud died thanks to the Others. In fact, the camaraderie they fostered together has reached a point where they're HeterosexualLifePartners.
** Many of the Great Houses reluctantly put aside their collective grudge against House Lannister. Though this is mostly because Tyrion is now Lord of Casterly Rock in place of Tywin, and many are still hoping that Jaime still gets punished when this is all over.
** There's an implicit example with [[spoiler:Daenerys and Jon]]. In canon, [[spoiler:Daenerys didn't take it well when she learned that her lover was a rival claimant for the Iron Throne. Here, the Others made taking the Iron Throne so irrelevant that she doesn't care who sits on it now, as long as it's her, him, or (preferably) [[OfficialCouple both of them]]]].
* ConflictingLoyalty:
** Ned Stark is faced with the choice of swearing fealty to Jon (and thus betraying his oldest friend) or staying loyal to Robert (and thus turning on the nephew he raised as his own son). He ultimately chooses Jon after Sansa points out he already betrayed Robert by saving Jon's life in the first place.
** After learning that Jon is a Targaryen, Barristan is torn between staying in Westeros and swearing fealty to him, or going to Essos in order to uphold his original oath to Daenerys. He ultimately decides on Jon, due to feeling a need to protect his old friend's son.
* CoolSword: ''Blackfyre'' and ''Dark Sister'', the [[AncestralWeapon ancestral swords]] of House Targaryen, are both revealed to have been in Maester Aemon's possession this entire time -- Bloodraven (who had swapped ''Blackfyre'' out with a fake after the first Blackfyre Rebellion to spite Bittersteel) left both in his care before vanishing beyond the Wall. Upon their reunion, Aemon passes the swords on to Jon, who decides to wield ''Blackfyre'' and loan ''Dark Sister'' out to someone else (he hasn't decided who yet) until Arya is old enough again that he can give it to her permanently.
* TheCoup: Quite a few people who remember the future stage these:
** Sam takes control of Horn Hill from his father, and then takes over from the Tyrells as temporary Warden of the South.
** Yara overthrows her father as ruler of the Iron Islands.
** Tyrion removes Tywin as ruler of Casterly Rock.
** Daenerys seizes control of Pentos.
** The overall goal of the first part of the fic is to depose Robert and have Jon take his rightful place on the throne so Westeros can properly prepare for the Others' return. In fact, an argument can be made that it's ''already happened'': as of this writing, Jon has all of Westeros (except Dorne, the Stormlands, and the Crownlands) in his camp. With Dorne torn apart by their own CivilWar and not inclined to join either side due to Elia Martell, and the Crownlands divided, only the Stormlands actually follow Robert. At this point, Jon is not just the rightful king, but also the ''De Facto'' king.
* CulturalPosturing: Even after dedicating himself to trying to be a better person, Viserys still treats the Dothraki like they're inferior compared to him.
* DeathByIrony: [[spoiler:Euron's death is full of this. Not only is his death caused by a crew that Remembers after he killed everyone that Remembered on his ship, he is killed by being thrown overboard with anchors attached. His killer even tells him that he's going to the Drowned God]].
* DidntSeeThatComing:
** In general, the ritual was only supposed to work on a select few people. It backfired, sending the consciousnesses of thousands of people back after their deaths to a few days after Jon Arryn's death. At least, Bran made sure three people ''didn't'' remember - Cersei Lannister, Petyr Baelish and Euron Greyjoy. Unfortunately, he forgot about Tywin.
** Barristan Selmy was shocked to find out that Jaime Lannister is now backing House Targaryen (i.e., Jon Targaryen).
** When Renly holds Cersei hostage and demands that Jaime and his group surrender in exchange for her life, Jaime's reply shocks both Renly and Cersei:
-->'''Jaime:''' [[YouCanKeepHer Slit her throat and rid us all of her madness.]]
** After Sam reveals to his family that his father threatened to have him killed unless he took the Black, his father gets a slap from his wife, in total opposition to her usually submissive attitude, shocking everyone.
** Daenerys didn't expect Viserys to be shocked back into sanity by the sight of her apparently committing suicide -- only to emerge unscathed and attended by three dragon hatchlings.
** Robert and Renly are dumbfounded when Stannis finally stumbles into the Red Keep, absolutely drunk out of his skull. It gets worse when he reveals he's been trying to numb the pain of having made a HumanSacrifice of his own daughter in the old timeline.
** Alton Lannister has no idea what to do when Jaime apologizes to him for killing him, and he stands there dumbfounded for a while after Jaime leaves him be.
** [[spoiler: The last thing Qyburn expected when he was caught by Gregor Clegane was for the Mountain to tell him that he ''liked'' being undead, and that he wants to be changed back into the monster that Qyburn made him in the old timeline... just with his mind intact this time.]]
** Despite the time-travel element, neither Robb nor Jon were honestly expecting that [[spoiler:Ned Umber and Lyanna Mormont]] would retain their young adult minds in the bodies of toddlers.
** [[spoiler:Qyburn showing up in Winterfell with the Mountain's severed head, an offer to treat Shireen's greyscale scars, and a cart full of books]] was quite unexpected for Sansa, Catelyn, Arya, and Davos, and it leaves them wanting quiet time.
** [[spoiler:Wights somehow appearing south of the Wall well ahead of schedule catches the Northern forces completely off guard.]]
** Earlier, upon arriving in Pentos, Talisa is brought before Dany, who hopes to learn more about the situation in Westeros. Dany is not expecting Talisa to assume her an enemy, and defiantly refuse to tell her, while Talisa wasn't expecting Dany's response to be bursting into laughter, before explaining that she is allied with House Stark.
*** On a related note Talisa was neither expecting to find that Pentos was now ruled by a Queen (as opposed to an AuthorityInNameOnly prince), nor was she expecting said Queen, the daughter of the Mad King seemingly commanding slaves and with every reason to have a grudge against the Starks, to in fact be a benevolent ally, who promptly enlists her services.
** Bloodraven, despite being the all-seeing Three-Eyed Raven, never foresaw the Remembering being enacted by his successor Bran and upending all his plans.
* DidntThinkThisThrough: The blood of the Wolf, Lion, and the Dragon (Sansa Stark, Tyrion Lannister, and Daenerys Targaryen respectively) should've been enough for the ritual. No one took into account the blood of the 3,000 soldiers who would be fighting and dying in the same area, which provided excess fuel to the magical energies, thus leading to the current predicament.
* DirtyKid: Ned Umber, due to being a horny preteen stuck in the body of a toddler that can barely walk.
* DisownedParent:
** Thanks to the spell malfunctioning, Stannis, Selyse, and ''Shireen herself'' all remember Stannis allowing Melisandre to burn Shireen alive as a HumanSacrifice in the original timeline. Shireen promptly disowns them and leaves Dragonstone with her ParentalSubstitute Ser Davos. The guilt drives Stannis deeper into alcoholism than even ''Robert'' fell while Selyse hangs herself again in shame.
** Another example is Tommen. He already disowned Cersei for her actions in the previous timeline, but also proceeds to disown Jaime after finding out Jaime is his biological father, to the point he'd rather ShedTheFamilyName and be a Waters.
** When Dickon and Talla are made aware that their father Randyll threatened to kill their brother Sam if he didn't pass his inheritance over to the former and join the Night's Watch, they proceed to spurn him as well.
* DownerBeginning: The story opens with the Others having won the Second War for the Dawn and overrun most of Westeros, with the last major group of survivors making a desperate LastStand just to buy enough time for the ritual to be enacted and send them all back in time for a do-over.
* DragonWithAnAgenda: Qyburn's first POV reveals that he was never loyal to Cersei, he just pandered to her madness in order to gain her patronage for his experiments.
* DramaticIrony:
** Robert's plans to deal with the Lannisters involve sparing Tyrion and naming him Warden of the West in order to spite Tywin's memory... completely unaware that Tyrion has already taken control of Casterly Rock himself. Also, Robert hopes to meet Ned again as they fight again against the Targaryens, not knowing that Ned is actually the Targaryen claimant's main supporter.
** Tywin loathed Tyrion all his life for supposedly killing his mother during his birth. [[spoiler: When Tyrion learns that it was actually the Maesters that killed her, Tyrion can’t help but note the irony that Tywin hated him his whole life [[AllForNothing for no reason]].]]
** Talisa flees to Pentos to avoid getting caught back up in Westerosi politics. In the process, she accidentally stumbles upon Daenerys, who’s impressed by her strength and recruits her services to her cause.
** In the original timeline, Renly was TheLostLenore to Loras, who never truly got over his death after all that time. In the new timeline, they’re reunited for only a moment, and then Loras is killed by Jaime in the chaos, making him TheLostLenore to ''Renly'' instead.
* TheDreaded:
** Arya becomes this after word of her status as a Faceless Man and her actions in the old timeline are revealed. Except among the Tullys and their loyalists, who praise her for what she did to the Freys.
** House Stark in general becomes this after their various exploits from the old timeline come to light. Besides Arya, of course, there's Jon, who is the rightful king of Westeros and leader of the forces against the White Walkers, and Sansa, the Lady of Winterfell who fed Ramsay Bolton to his own hounds and exposed the true depths of Petyr Baelish's manipulations. Even Bran is feared, as his magic was powerful enough to cause the events of the fic in the first place. No less than Olenna Tyrell considers crossing the Starks to be a death sentence now, and her granddaughter Margaery agrees and Roose Bolton notes the ruthless justice of the Ancient Kings of Winter is alive and well in this generation of Starks.
** Edmure Tully is edging dangerously close to this status after what he did to Black Walder spreads to the rest of Westeros. At the very least, he is far more respected now.
** PlayedForLaughs with Lyanna Mormont, whose fierce attitude and reputation are such that even though she has the body of a toddler, everyone is fearful of and respectful towards her.
** Stannis had this reputation to many, even those who did not Remember, for defeating the Iron Born at the height of their power and upon the open seas where they are strongest. Tellingly, these are all recounted after the man has collapsed into a hollow shell of himself, deserted by nearly everyone who once followed him.
* DrivenToSuicide: Selyse Baratheon. Again.
* DroppedABridgeOnHim:
** Ramsay is killed offscreen by Bran warging into his dogs and mauling him to death.
** [[spoiler: Bran offhandedly mentions in Chapter 41 that Euron has died. The spinoff reveals that he was killed by a Yi-Ti pirate ship crew that Remembered and knew he would be attacking.]]
* DrowningMySorrows: Stannis, after everything he did in the original timeline only for it all to come to nothing.
* EveryoneHasStandards:
** Doran Martell may hate the Lannisters, but even he can't help but feel some vindictive pleasure at hearing that [[spoiler:the maester who murdered Joanna Lannister will be facing justice very soon]].
** To his credit, when Stannis realizes that he did in fact burn his daughter alive, the first thing he does is tell Davos to get Shireen as far away from him as possible. Davos is all too happy to comply. Selyse in turn hangs herself.
** Everyone hates the Freys. That being said, the fate that befell poor "Fat" Walda Frey in the previous timeline was so gruesome that even the Starks and Tullys agree she didn't deserve it and can't help but pity her, especially when they learn that she also Remembers.
** Even the people who still hate Jaime pity him for being forced to kill Cersei in the previous timeline.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: It's noted that even the worst of the Targaryen kings -- including Maegor the Cruel, Aegon the Unworthy, and even Aerys the Mad King -- never resorted to practicing slavery.
* ExactWords: How Jon gets Grenn and Pyp out of the Night's Watch to instead serve as part of his household guard -- they swore to be part of the Watch until they died, and they did.
* TheExile:
** [[spoiler: Unwilling to bring himself to kill her again, Tyrion instead has Shae sent on a ship to Braavos.]]
** This is the plan for Jaime when the war for the Others is over: as “punishment” for his previous crimes (and as a reward for Brienne), he is to be exiled to Tarth.
* EyeScream: Oberyn loses an eye fighting Areo Hotah.
* FateWorseThanDeath: PlayedForLaughs. Hizdahr is happy that he and his family won't be killed by the former slaves of Mereen...until he learns that he and Daario will be co-ruling Mereen together in Daenerys' name.
* FantasticRacism: Smalljon has this against wildings so much that even after being willing to take the Black following the return he refuses to listen about the White Walker threat and outright tells Robb that the Starks didn't deserve the North because of their southern ties.
* FireForgedFriends:
** Jonos Bracken and Tytos Blackwood have set aside their life long animosity and become HeterosexualLifePartners after having to fight the Others together.
** The main reason why Jaime isn't executed by just about every House after everything he did in the last life is because he fought and died alongside them during the Long Night. The fact that he and Tyrion were the only members of House Lannister to volunteer to fight (and the fact that he actually killed Cersei, ridding them of her madness) earned him their respect.
* {{Foreshadowing}}:
** In Chapter 11, Daenerys sees a familiar blond-haired maid looking at her before the latter turns to flee in the other direction. It's revealed later in the chapter that it's Doreah.
** Myrcella briefly recognizes the maid serving her dinner, and realizes it's likely Tyrion will want to bed her. [[spoiler: That maid turns out to be Shae, who Tyrion has of course bedded before.]]
* TheFriendNobodyLikes:
** The Northern Lords are willing to work with Jaime, but no matter how much he's done to make up for his crimes, they all very much despise him and still expect him to be punished when the war is over. Luckily enough, it's a punishment that he already agreed to and actually rather likes: exile to Tarth.
** This applies to House Lannister in general. The only reason the Westerlands aren't fighting a losing war from all sides is because Tyrion usurped control of Casterly Rock from Tywin and pledged fealty to Jon. As they need Lannister gold and men in preparation for the Long Night, everyone is leaving them alone for now, though Tyrion is still making steps for amends, starting with capturing Amory Lorch and the Mountain to be gifted to either the Targaryens or the Martells.
* TheGhost: Euron Greyjoy, one of the biggest three threats of the last timeline, never appears in the main story, off in the Narrow Sea somewhere [[spoiler:until Bran reveals that he died offscreen]]. His first appearance in the spinoff reveals [[spoiler:how he died]].
* TheGoodChancellor: There are technically two:
** Once Davos reunites with the Starks, he's immediately reinstated as Jon's Hand, on the grounds that he knows as much as they do about the true threat, is honestly blunt, and they trust him. In practice though, Sansa handles a lot of this job herself.
** While technically not officially recognized by Daenerys, Tyrion resumes his post as her Hand, and buckles down to serve as both Paramount of the Westerlands and her Hand within Westeros.
* GodIsInept: An irritated Sansa outright tells Septa Mordane the Seven never answered her prayers, feeling praying to them in the face of Winter is plain nonsense.
* GodzillaThreshold: Maester Cressen, Stannis' Maester, is so frightened of the effects of the Remembering he decides to consult Melisandre, the only magic expert he can tap - [[spoiler:only to find her braindead in her room]].
* GoneHorriblyRight: The ritual did its intended job of sending people back in time. It just got overcharged and sent back too many.
* GoOutWithASmile: [[spoiler: Bloodraven dies smirking at the sight of the usually stoic Night King actually showing anger at the situation.]]
* GroinAttack: Yara gives one to Theon to make sure he has his family jewels back and to remind him not to lose them again.
* HatedByAll:
** Tywin’s ruthlessness and desire for power made him one of the most feared men in the entire Seven Kingdoms. Come the Remembering, when everyone actually has the capacity to fight back, and now he’s one of the most hated and fought against. Even his own siblings turn against him, and the only reasons why the rest of Westeros aren't all banding together to stomp House Lannister out of existence are [[ConflictKiller the looming threat of the White Walkers]] and the fact that Tyrion is now in charge.
** After what he did to his daughter Shireen in the original timeline becomes common knowledge, Stannis is firmly in this group. Shireen disowns him and gets out of Dragonstone with Ser Davos, while Robert disinherits him and has him thrown in a Black Cell.
** No one misses the Freys after they broke SacredHospitality at the Red Wedding. While some are concerned with how brutal Edmure was in his purge of the Freys (as it was disturbingly similar to what a young Tywin Lannister did to Castamere), they’re still thoroughly despised (with a few exceptions, like Roslin and Fat Walda), both versions of their deaths are put into a song, and they’re only ever spoken about in anger.
---> '''Greatjon''': The bread’s not poisoned. We’re not the fucking Freys.
** Cersei Lannister. By far and away the most hated woman in Westeros, if not the world. Cersei went so insane during the Long Night that not only was she talked about in the same breath as Aerys, she was considered ''worse''. Notably, the man who ended up killing her in the previous timeline was her brother Jaime. Even though kinslaying is considered one of the worst sins a man could commit in Westeros, there's not a single person who holds it against him for killing her, not even their own family. If anything, everyone pities Jaime for being forced into that situation in the first place.
* HeirInLaw:
** With Loras Tyrell dead, Dickon Tarly becomes this to Mace Tyrell after Sam betroths him to Margaery.
** Robert planned to make Robb this by betrothing him to Shireen as an apology to House Stark and Ned in particular for all they suffered during the War of Five Kings. The plan got nixed after he found out about Jon.
* HeroicBSOD:
** Depending on how heroic you find Catelyn of course, but the revelation that not only Arya is a Faceless Man, but the gruesome way she killed the Freys hit Catelyn like a sledgehammer.
** Again, depending on how heroic you find the reformed Viserys, but finding out that in the old timeline his last actions before death were threatening to kill Daenerys leaves him broken down.
* HeroicSacrifice:
** In the prologue, Jaime, Jon, Sam, Gendry, Edd, Tormund, and several others hold off the Night King's forces in order to buy time for Bran to finish the ritual. This turned out to also be ''literal'', as their blood and that of their comrades' was added to the spell and supercharged its power.
** Melisandre protects Bran by absorbing the bulk of the backlash when the ritual goes haywire, frying her body. [[spoiler:This also results in rendering her past self braindead.]]
** [[spoiler:Jojen Reed dies once more saving Bran from a bunch of wights.]]
* HistoryRepeats:
** Just like in the original timeline, Selyse Baretheon hangs herself over the guilt of having been complicit in her daughter Shireen being made a HumanSacrifice.
** [[spoiler:Jojen still dies protecting Bran from wights.]]
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: [[spoiler:Some of Euron's men did manage to Remember - but since Euron has the custom of ripping out their tongues, they couldn't explain what happened and Euron had them killed as they tried to make charades -- leaving Euron unaware of the fact that his plan to attack a Yi-Tish ship is bound for failure.]]
* HoldTheLine:
** Jorah apparently died defending Moat Cailin from the Night King's forces so that everyone could evacuate south of the Neck.
** This was essentially what the survivors at the Isle of Faces were doing -- fighting the Others off for long enough to give Bran time to finish his ritual.
* HookHand: In the opening chapter, Jaime Lannister's mentioned to have replaced his gold hand with a dragonglass hook.
* HopeSpot: In Chapter 11, Doreah runs away from an enraged Irri and runs into an alley before waiting for several long moments to not hear running feet. After not hearing the sounds, Doreah sighs in relief and turns around...only to jerk back in surprise upon seeing Irri standing there.
* HorrifyingTheHorror: Robert Baratheon is a terror to many and no stranger to frightening enemies, but Lancel Lannister in the depths of his [[ChurchMilitant Faith Militant beliefs]], up to and including carving the symbol of the Seven into his forehead, is enough to unnerve him and snuff out his interest in interrogating other prisoners for a while, even Cersei after finding out that her children are Jaime's, not his.
* HowTheMightyHaveFallen:
** Tywin. Not only has his least favorite son taken all his power, but because he Remembers, he knows the truth about Jamie and Cersei. And to add insult to injury, the only reason he remembers? Bran, the omniscient Three-Eyed Raven, ''forgot'' about him.
** Cersei herself goes from Queen of the Seven Kingdoms to the lowliest prisoner in the Black Cells within a single day. As the cherry on top, that only happened because of Jaime, who not only abandoned her but even straight out told Renly to kill her and spare them all her madness.
** Stannis went from a decently well-respected lord and the true heir of his older brother Robert to one of the most despised and disgraced people in Westeros after it becomes known he used his own daughter as a human sacrifice.
* {{Hypocrite}}: During the talk about what to do with the Boltons, Ned notes that he doesn’t feel comfortable with a PreCrimeArrest. Understandable, but it rings a little hollow with him keeping Theon (who committed a heinous offense but is regretful, and was already horrifically punished for it, and has Jon, Arya, Bran, and Sansa vouching for him) imprisoned in his room. To his credit, Ned does acknowledge that he overreacted, but still ultimately [[PersonaNonGrata permanently banishes Theon from Winterfell]] with the threat of death if he steps anywhere near there again.
* IAmNotMyFather: ''Shouted'' by Tyrion when he's told that Tywin Lannister would never show mercy towards somebody who tried to kill him, in response to his decision to spare [[spoiler:Shae, who also remembers]] after she nearly killed him.
* ImaginedInnuendo: Myrcella's response to Jaime introducing Brienne as his "good friend" when she's just caught them in the middle of TheBigDamnKiss is to interpret it as innuendo.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice:
** Littlefinger, courtesy of Jaime. Followed by [[OffWithHisHead decapitation]] to MakeSureHesDead.
** How Sam was killed in the opening chapter's LastStand, courtesy of the Night King running him through.
** Irri stabs Doreah in the stomach with a dagger before twisting it and yanking it out of Doreah's stomach.
* InSpiteOfANail:
** [[spoiler:Trystane Martell]] still dies [[spoiler:in a skirmish with the Sand Snakes]].
** [[spoiler:Jojen Reed]] still dies [[spoiler:protecting Bran from the White Walkers]].
* InternalReveal:
** Ned Stark reveals to the Northern Lords that Jon Snow is not his bastard, but rather his nephew Jon Targaryen, the trueborn son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark. News of his true identity also starts to trickle through to other parts of Westeros thanks to the various people who Remember.
** Word of why Jaime really killed the Mad King starts spreading as people who fought alongside him against the Others try to convince those who didn't that he's trustworthy. When Ned Stark finally finds out, he does ''not'' take it well.
** Chapter 29 is dedicated to Catelyn learning everything that happened after her death, and her reaction.
** Chapter 35 sees two big internal reveals, as Maester Cressen learns about Jon Snow being Jon Targareyn, and all the Lannisters learn about [[spoiler: the Maester conspiracy killing Joanna]].
** Chapter 36 has Renly, and then Robert, finally learn about Jon Snow being Jon Targaryen.
** Ned ''finally'' learns about Arya being a Faceless Man and killing the Freys in Chapter 38; Greatjon told him about Arya killing all the Freys, and Jon disclosed Arya being a Faceless Man. The same chapter also has Mathis Rowan and other Reach Lords getting caught up to speed on everything that's happened since the Remembering.
** In Chapter 39, Jon tells Ned and Robb about how he was killed in the Night's Watch mutiny and resurrected by Melisandre, as well as several smaller things like Beric's repeated resurrections by Thoros, how Sandor protected Sansa and Arya, and how Arya spent time as Tywin's cupbearer.
* ItRunsInTheFamily: Renly mentally suggests the possibility that the Baratheons' Targaryen blood is why Stannis fell so far in the previous timeline.
* ItsAllAboutMe: Renly's reaction to Stannis being imprisoned and Shireen being missing, on top of all of the Baratheons' other problems? Mentally preen how that makes him Robert's heir by default.
* ItsAllMyFault:
** In the midst of her HeroicBSOD, Cat blames everything that became of her family in the old timeline on her own actions. Specifically, her broken promise where she had sworn to the Seven that she'd raise and care for Jon as her own only to go back on her word.
** Robb blames himself for the Karstarks allying with the Boltons because he executed Rickard Karstark. After explaining what happened to his father, Ned notes that given what happened, Rickard's execution was inevitable.
** [[spoiler: The reason that Greatjon Umber didn't respond to any of the ravens from Winterfell was because he blamed himself for his son's betrayal of the Starks and felt there was nothing he could do to atone for it.]]
** [[spoiler: Ned blames himself for Jojen’s death because when he saw Jojen and Bran under attack by wights, he chose to save Bran.]]
* IronicEcho: In Chapter 7, Ned tears into Catelyn with a downright brutal WhatTheHellHero call out. At one point during the tirade, Catelyn admits that she "didn't think", to which Ned sardonically agrees. In Chapter 45, Benjen throws that back in Ned's face while demanding to know why he never told him the truth about what happened to Lyanna and Jon's parentage.
* {{Irony}}: After Tyrion decides to spare [[spoiler:Shae]], Genna notes that he will have to be utterly ruthless to whoever next wrongs him to ensure that no one assumes him to be weak. That person ends up being [[spoiler:Maester Creylen]], who is quite literally responsible for ''every major problem Tyrion has ever dealt with'' (for starters, [[spoiler:Creylen ensured that Joanna would die after giving birth to Tyrion, which Tywin blamed Tyrion for]]), so it's pretty clear Tyrion will take ''extra'' care with making sure that individual suffers horribly.
* KickTheSonOfABitch:
** [[spoiler: A furious Robert, aware and ''very'' tired of Cersei's scheming, has Joffrey's corpse thrown in her Black Cell.]]
** Joffrey and Littlefinger are killed in their first appearance: Joffrey by a vengeful and protective Sandor and Baelish by Jaime.
** Qyburn is captured by Gregor Clegane, who tells him he wants to be put in the same undead state he was made into in the old timeline, but retain his free will. Instead, [[spoiler: Qyburn sedates and kills him without blinking.]]
* KilledOffForReal: Named casualties as of the current point in the story include:
** Killed in the chaos in King's Landing:
*** Joffrey -- beaten to death by Sandor.
*** Littlefinger -- stabbed and beheaded by Jaime.
*** Ser Loras Tyrell -- [[TooDumbToLive killed by Jaime after attacking the latter and Barristan at the same time]].
*** Janos Slynt -- lynched by an angry mob.
*** Ser Preston Greenfield -- killed in the King's Landing riots.
*** Ser Boros Blount -- killed in the King's Landing riots.
*** The High Sparrow -- chest caved in by Robert.
** Killed in the Water Gardens Bloodbath:
*** [[spoiler: Ellaria Sand -- stabbed by Doran.]]
*** [[spoiler: Obara Sand -- skewered in the head by Trystane.]]
*** [[spoiler: Areo Hotah -- killed by Oberyn Martell.]]
*** [[spoiler: Trystane Martell.]]
*** [[spoiler: Nymeria Sand.]]
*** [[spoiler: Tyene Sand.]]
** Killed at some other time or place:
*** Lady Selyse Baratheon -- suicide by hanging.
*** "Rattleshirt" the Lord of Bones -- head smashed in by Tormund.
*** Doreah -- beheaded by Irri.
*** Krazynys -- castrated and killed by Missandei.
*** Lord Walder Frey -- killed by his sons in "retaliation" for Arya killing them with his face in the old timeline.
*** Black Walder Frey -- head smashed in by Edmure.
*** [[spoiler: Melisandre -- rendered brain dead by the ritual after taking too much power.]]
*** [[spoiler: Roose Bolton -- beheaded by Robb.]]
*** [[spoiler: Myranda -- killed by Bran via warging into Ramsay's hounds.]]
*** [[spoiler: Ramsay Snow -- killed by Bran via [[BearsAreBadNews warging into a bear]].]]
*** [[spoiler: Maester Lomys -- knifed by Mace.]]
*** [[spoiler: Ser Gregor Clegane -- killed by Qyburn.]]
*** [[spoiler: Jojen Reed -- killed by wights.]]
*** [[spoiler: Euron Greyjoy -- killed by the crew of a Yi-Ti ship.]]
*** [[spoiler: Bloodraven -- killed by the Night King.]]
* KillTheOnesYouLove: By the end of the first timeline, Cersei and Jaime had lost all love they once had for each other and tried to kill the other. Cersei had the Mountain do the deed, but Jaime came out on top and then killed Cersei himself.
* KinslayingIsASpecialKindOfEvil: Zigzagged. For those who don't Remember or died early in the previous timeline, this is played straight. For everyone else, each case is judged by the circumstances surrounding it.
** The only example universally played straight is Stannis burning poor, innocent Shireen at the stake and sacrificing her for a blessing to defeat the Boltons in battle. It's regarded as his InUniverse MoralEventHorizon.
** Another straight example is Randyll Tarly threatening to kill his son Samwell if he didn't take the Black. As it turns out, ''none'' of their family were aware of that threat -- the moment they found out, a furious Melessa slapped him and gave him a short, brutal ReasonYouSuckSpeech, while his favorite son Dickon spurned him and sided with Sam during his coup against Randyll. Later on, when Talla visits him during his house arrest, Darvon refuses to leave her alone with him because he can't trust him not to try and harm her as he did with Sam.
** [[RuleOfThree Yet another example]] that's played straight is Joffrey's ordering of all of King Robert's illegitimate children to be killed. The smallfolk retaliated against Janos Slynt after the Remembering.
** Old Walder Frey was murdered by his sons Raymund and Aenys. Stevron Frey considered it a deed evilly done, and both Brynden Tully and Patrek Mallister considered it another line crossed. Edmure Tully, Jonos Bracken and Tytos Blackwood [[BlackComedy simply thought it was hilarious]].
** Oberyn Martell initially turned against his brother Doran after Doran killed his lover Ellaria and his daughters (sans Sarella). He promptly returned to his brother's side after Doran explained ''why'' he killed Ellaria and his nieces (they committed a coup and killed both him and Trystane in the previous timeline, technically making them guilty of kinslaying too).
** Played with and subverted with Tyrion killing Tywin in the previous timeline. Normally that would be another mark against Tyrion, but Tywin's ZeroPercentApprovalRating means no one outside of Casterly Rock really cares, especially since Tyrion and Jaime supported the Targaryens in combating the Second Long Night. Inside Casterly Rock, the only people unnerved by it are Tywin's siblings, and even they supported Tyrion's coup in the end, because even they couldn't deny that Tywin had effectively screwed over the entire family with his ruthlessness.
** Painfully subverted with Jaime killing Cersei in the previous timeline. By the time that happened, Cersei had already attempted to murder Tyrion numerous times and had in fact already committed kinslaying herself when she blew up the Great Sept of Baelor with wildfire, killing her cousin Lancel and uncle Kevan. Following that, she gradually descended into further insanity, allowing Qyburn to create numerous {{Eldritch Abomination}}s that were let loose on King's Landing, attacking the Targaryen forces while they were trying to fight off the ''literal apocalypse'', and finally, sending the undead Mountain to kill Jaime, her only remaining loved one. Everyone still alive at that point universally agreed that she had to die and the only thing they felt sorry for is that [[KillTheOnesYouLove Jaime had to be the one to do it]].
** Also subverted with [[spoiler:Craster's death. After the Remembering, Craster's wives and daughters killed him for the abuse he inflicted on them in the old timeline. Jon, Edd, and Ser Barristan aren't bothered by this]].
* KneelBeforeFrodo: The Northern lords and the leaders of the Free Folk swearing fealty to Jon.
* {{Knighting}}: At Jon's prompting, Grenn is knighted as Ser Grenn the Giantslayer after Barristan learns that he died taking down a giant in the previous life.
* LaserGuidedKarma:
** WordOfGod states that [[spoiler: Melisandre being rendered brain dead]] is this for her actions in the old timeline.
** A lot of this happens in general to various people post-Remembering, to the point that those who ''don't'' remember are barely able to hold their friends back from taking their revenge.
** [[spoiler:Lomys was part of a conspiracy to destabilize the realm, and murdered Alerie and Luthor Tyrell to achieve that. He's promptly killed by Mace, who stabs him in the back in retaliation for the death of his wife and father]].
** Dickon gets hit with the rare positive version of this: as a result of siding with his brother instead of his father, Sam betroths him to Margaery Tyrell, not only giving him a better wife than he could've ever hoped for but also making him the heir to Highgarden.
** Zigzagged in regards to Hizdahr (at least in his mind). He died saving Daenerys' life; in exchange, he and his family are the only masters in Mereen whose lives are spared when the slaves rise up again. The zigzag part comes in when he is forcibly co-opted into ruling Mereen in Daenerys' name... with ''[[TheHedonist Daario]]''.
** [[spoiler: Qyburn reveals that his canonical PainfulTransformation of the Mountain into a zombie was revenge for nearly being killed by him at Harrenhal. As is his killing of the Mountain and his men when given the chance in the new timeline.]]
** [[spoiler:Euron is killed by the crew of a ship that he destroyed in the original timeline]].
* LastStand: The first chapter opens with the desperate last stand of what's ''left'' of humanity -- some three thousand men and women -- trying to hold back the Army of the Dead long enough to buy Bran and Melisandre time for the ritual.
* LaughingMad: When Stannis learns that Jon Snow is actually the son of Rhaegar and Lyanna, he starts laughing maniacally and wonders if the gods really do exist, relishing the irony of it all.
* LockedOutOfTheLoop: Everyone not present at the Isle of Faces when the ritual was enacted is utterly baffled by waking up in the past. Likewise, due to dying at different points, a lot of people who do remember at least parts of the original timeline are still lacking a lot of important information.
** Take, for example, the Starks. Ned, who died before the chaos began (and whose death is what instigated it), is completely lost and the big explanation at the beginning is primarily for his benefit. Cue his over-growing shock and horror over his family's changes in personality, abilities (especially magic), and the many tragedies they endured. Robb and Catelyn, who made it to the Red Wedding before dying, have first-hand accounts of the War of Five Kings but little understanding of the underlying duplicity that occurred before, during, and after the war, so they fare hardly better than he does. The last Stark to die before the Long Night, Rickon, is the only one that is generally accepting of the new information, since he died only a year or so before the ritual.
** Bran mentions that when the spell started getting out of control, he still made a point to make sure that Cersei, Littlefinger, and Euron Greyjoy didn’t Remember. He attempted the same with the Boltons, but isn’t certain if he succeeded (it's later revealed that he succeeded with Roose, while Ramsay [[DroppedABridgeOnHim gets killed before we learn about him]]), while he realizes that he should’ve done it with Tywin had he not forgotten about him.
** Robert is literally the last major political figure in Westeros to learn about Jon Targaryen, mostly because everyone in the vicinity with knowledge of that revelation fled King's Landing as fast as they could, while everyone ''outside'' the vicinity is purposefully avoiding contact with him, essentially making all of King's Landing (and to a lesser extent, the Crowlands and the Stormlands) this trope. It takes until Chapter 36 for him to learn who Jon really is and that the North has pledged to him, and he still doesn't know that almost all the other kingdoms have either done so already or are in the process of doing so.
** Outside of Winterfell, even those who ''were'' on the Isle of Faces don't understand why so many people remember.
* LoopholeAbuse: [[spoiler: How the Night King gets some wights past the Wall, despite its weakened state still being enough to block them -- he has some undead giants ''shoot them'' over the top with bows, thereby bypassing the magical barrier.]]
* LovedByAll:
** Shireen Baratheon was already loved due to her battle with greyscale, but once word of what Stannis did to her starts to spread, she becomes even more universally loved. Even Qyburn of all people respects her enough to treat her greyscale scars.
** As a minor example, all of the Tully bannermen show that they feel sorry for Fat Walda, despite her being a Frey, due to the horrible and gruesome fate that befell her in the last timeline. Any time she is mentioned, it's met with sympathy and concern for her well-being.
** Another minor example would be Arya Stark, who amongst the Tully bannermen, is highly adored for her part in slaughtering House Frey in retribution for the Red Wedding, to the point that they practically shout praises of her upon arriving in Winterfell. Amongst everyone else, though, she's firmly TheDreaded, as people can't reconcile her status as a mass murderer with the image of her nature as a young girl.
* LoveDodecahedron: The TimeTravel has really done a number on a lot of love lives, especially Jon and Daenerys's. While the two love each other and most of the kingdoms have accepted that the two are (unofficially) betrothed, they have several suitors still vying for them. Jon's FirstLove Ygritte is alive again, as is Daenerys's first husband Khal Drogo and her former lover Daario Naharis. Then there's Jorah, but it seems he's accepted that Daenerys doesn't love him the way he loves her and is fully supportive of their relationship.
* MachiavelliWasWrong: Perfectly displayed with House Lannister. Their ruthlessness in the original timeline caused everyone to fear them, but it also made them utterly ''hated'' as well and the only reason the other great houses never retaliated was that their resources and manpower were depleted. Now, in the rebooted timeline, that's no longer an issue and if it wasn't for [[ConflictKiller the threat of the White Walkers]], they would've all been perfectly happy banding together to wipe them out of existence. It's for this reason that Kevan and Genna support Tyrion in his coup against Tywin -- even they couldn't deny that Tywin's actions have put their family into a ''very'' precarious position.
* MakeSureHesDead: After he's already stabbed Petyr Baelish through the gut, Jaime still decapitates him afterwards for this reason.
* MedicationTampering:
** A variant. Lysa and Baelish had the former's maester deliberately poison Robin Arryn, keeping the boy pliant and sickly, so they could control the Vale through him. That, combined with the knowledge that Lysa murdered Jon Arryn and her severe SanitySlippage, is enough for the Vale Lords to oust her from control and install Yohn Royce as Robin's new regent and caretaker.
** Sarella reveals to Doran that [[spoiler:his maester has been giving him medicine that worsened his gout instead of treating it as part of the maesters' plan to weaken the Great Houses]].
* MegatonPunch: One of the first things Meera does after being reunited with Jojen is lay him out flat for not warning her about [[TheStoic what Bran would become]].
* MercyKill: Discussed, as Mance admits that Jon killing him in the old timeline was this compared to the death by fire that Stannis and Melisandre had planned for him.
* MisplacedRetribution: The Frey sons kill Lord Walder as "revenge" for him killing them in the last timeline, not realizing that it was actually Arya using his face instead.
* TheMole: [[spoiler:Several of the Maesters assigned to the major houses are actively working to destabilize the realm. This includes Grand Maester Pycelle, and the Maesters of Houses Lannister, Tyrell, Tully, and Martell]].
* MonumentalDamage: Apparently, when the Others overran Oldtown in the old timeline, the Night King used Viserion to collapse the Hightower.
* MoodWhiplash:
** Upon learning that his straight-laced brother Stannis has become an alcoholic, Robert's reaction is to gleefully laugh and wonder if they can start drinking together. Upon learning ''why'' he became an alcoholic, he's disgusted and infuriated, ordering Stannis to be thrown into the Black Cells to rot.
** When Ned learns that Meera Reed fell in love with Bran, he starts chuckling, clearly impressed with his son, but when Bran reminds him that he's not ''Bran'' anymore, Ned's mood crashes straight back down.
* MoralEventHorizon: InUniverse:
** Everyone universally agrees Stannis crossed it by burning Shireen in the previous timeline. The instant Robert learns of it, he has Stannis thrown in a Black Cell.
** Viserys seems to think he crossed it in the previous life when he threatened Dany’s unborn child. When he learns about this, he’s reduced to tears, asks why she even bothered to keep him alive after that, and remarks that she deserves better than him.
** The Red Wedding for House Frey. This act was so universally despised that even though every member of the family that participated in it was executed (irrespective of whether or not they Remembered), those who were spared are ''still'' held in complete contempt, even though each and every single one of them is completely innocent. Poor Stevron Frey laments how House Frey will be dealing with the fallout for several ''generations'', and that's if they're lucky.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: The reaction from several people who Remembered.
** The two hit the hardest are Stannis and Selyse Baratheon, who drive themselves into [[DrowningMySorrows alcoholism]] and [[DrivenToSuicide suicide]], respectively, after they realize that, yes, they did burn their daughter alive.
** While he doesn't Remember, Viserys has a very similar reaction when he's told of what he threatened to do to Dany's unborn child. This makes him determined to be a better brother to Dany and try to become a better person in general.
** Jon has this reaction upon realizing that by casting the spell and turning back time, [[spoiler:they erased Little Sam from existence and wonders in horror how many other children were also [[RetGone erased from existence]] by their actions.]]
* NauseaFuel: InUniverse, Arya giving Tomard a blueberry pie is this to the Manderly and Reed bannermen. Tomard, not knowing of the Frey Pies because he doesn't Remember, does not understand why they start ''turning green, gagging, and retching'' over Arya giving him a seemingly innocuous blueberry pie.
-->'''Tomard:''' What the fuck is the matter with all of you?! It's just fucking Blueberry Pie!
* INeedAFreakingDrink: Stannis' reaction to remembering what he did in the original timeline (specifically, murdering his own daughter) is to order Davos to take Shireen as far away from him as he can, and then get very, very drunk.
* NewsTravelsFast: {{Averted}}. Planetos is a fantastic ''medieval'' society, so news gets around slowly. This is both a blessing and a curse.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: Jaime killing Loras during the madness at King's Landing made things far more difficult than they had to be. To be fair to Jaime, it's pointed out InUniverse that was primarily Loras' fault, as he attacked both Jaime ''and'' Barristan Selmy at the same time. Barristan himself states that if Jaime hadn't killed Loras, he certainly would have.
* NoHoldsBarredBeatdown:
** Robb dishes one out to Theon, though he's talked down before going too far.
** Sandor beats Joffrey to death after seeing that he Remembers the previous timeline.
** Edmure gives one to Black Walder, bashing his head in with a rock.
** [[spoiler: Bran to Ramsay]], [[BearsAreBadNews indirectly]].
** [[spoiler:Greatjon Umber to Smalljon Umber]], breaking the latter's jaw and nearly killing him after learning he had dumped his oaths to the Starks to follow the Boltons.
* NoJustNoReaction:
** Bronn, when Tyrion jokingly offers to make him the new lord of Castamere.
** Part of Tomard's miniature mental breakdown when he learns that Arya (who he still thinks of as "little Arya Underfoot") grew up to become a Faceless Man.
* NoodleIncident: Old Nan apparently tanned Aegon the Unlikely's behind when he was Ser Duncan the Tall's squire and they visited Winterfell.
* NotAfraidOfYouAnymore: All of Westeros to Tywin Lannister. From the Starks to Robert to the other Great Houses to even his own family, there's not a single person that fears him anymore. Either because his actions and/or those of Cersei and Joffrey have pissed them off that much, or because of the Others, who frankly make him a minor nuisance at most in comparison. Or even both, to be honest. This is perfectly encapsulated when Jon finds out he Remembers -- the only concern Jon has about the situation is the possibility he'll kill Tyrion, which is the only real threat he actually posed to their plans.
* OddCouple: Several pairings, both platonic and romantic, are seen as this by those who don't Remember or didn't live long enough to have the necessary context.
* OddFriendship: Interestingly enough, Daenarys and Talisa strike up one when she happens to end up in Pentos. A former Queen and a Queen rising.
* OffWithHisHead:
** Irri does this to Doreah after killing her.
** After seizing the Dreadfort, Robb executes Roose by beheading him with Ice.
* OffscreenMomentOfAwesome:
** Somewhere between chapters 26 and 39, [[spoiler: Qyburn managed to kill The Mountain and his men]].
** At the same time that Missandei kills Krazynys, the Unsullied are taking over Astapor. All we see of the aftermath is the fact that Grey Worm survived and the Unsullied won. Meanwhile, in Meereen, the slaves, led by Daario Naharis, manage to revolt and successfully kill all the slavers (except Hizdahr), liberating the city on their own, all while Hizdahr can only hear what is happening.
** Lyanna Mormont still killed a giant wight at some point, though unlike canon it's implied that she survived the experience and kept on fighting.
* OhCrap:
** Bran has a subtle NotSoStoic moment when he realizes there is too much blood being added to the Remembering spell and he won't be able to control most of who will remember the first timeline.
** The general reaction for those who weren't supposed to come back. And of those who were, when they realize how many other people remember.
** Catelyn when Jon reveals his true identity to the entirety of the Stark family, realizing that the boy she had openly and vocally resented his whole life is actually the rightful king of Westeros, and she has long made an enemy, or at least risked making one, of him.
** Qyburn's reaction when Gregor Clegane comes after him. [[spoiler: Subverted in that, even if he hates Qyburn for turning him into a mindless slave to Cersei, Gregor remembers that he also made him much stronger, immune to pain, and even somehow cured his maddening affliction -- he describes it as Qyburn finally giving him the peace and quiet he'd sought from Maesters all his life. Perhaps understandably, Gregor asks Qyburn to make him undead again -- but this time with his own free will.]]
** Maester Cressen finds Lord Rosby almost catatonic with panic after finding out from Tycho Nestoris that Jon Targaryen and Jon Snow are the same person.
** [[spoiler: Ramsay and Myranda have this reaction when Ramsay's hounds suddenly turn on him. [[FromBadToWorse And then]] [[BearsAreBadNews a bear shows up]].]]
** Patrek Mallister (who doesn't Remember) almost has a panic attack when Edmure nearly orders his archers to fire at a Frey party approaching under parley.
** Roose Bolton when [[spoiler:Bran reveals the hidden torture chambers underneath the Dreadfort and perfectly recites a line from a conversation he had with his own father planning to wait for the right moment to betray the Starks]].
** Jon, when Bran suggests that [[spoiler: the Night King might Remember]].
** Jon, when he discovers [[spoiler: the Night King ''does'' Remember]].
* OlderThanTheyLook: The timeline resetting means those who were small children when the plot kicked off basically have the minds of teenagers in young preteen bodies. This is a considerable source of frustration for a lot of them - Myrcella notes that the adults constantly pull NotNowKiddo on her despite the fact that she was nearly fully grown before she died in her last life, Lyanna Mormont and Ned Umber are both toddlers again and haven't exactly retained much control over their bodily functions, and Shireen expresses annoyance at how she's going to have to undergo puberty a second time.
* OmniscientMoralityLicense: What Bran operates on. Considering the only way to stop him is to babysit him literally 24/7, Jon, Arya, and Sansa just gave up and let him do what he wants -- much to Ned's disbelief and frustration.
* OnlySaneMan:
** Sarella Sand was this for the Sand Snakes. Doran explicitly states, while explaining why he's sparing her, that if she had been present in Dorne when Ellaria and the others were planning their coup, chances are the coup would have never happened to begin with.
** Shireen considers herself this for House Baratheon. She is probably right.
** Ned ''thinks'' he's this for the Starks. In reality, the role is shared by Jon and Sansa.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness:
** The first sign that the King's Landing group gets of just how badly the spell escalated is when Myrcella refers to Jaime as her father, meaning that she Remembers.
** Melessa Tarly's usually a demure and soft spoken ProperLady, but upon learning her husband threatened to kill Sam if he didn't join the Night's Watch, she slaps him across the face multiple times and angrily screams at him, stunning everyone at the total reversal of her normal personality.
** When Renly has a dagger to Cersei’s throat, Jaime tells him to just kill her and get it over with. Renly and Cersei are both so shocked that not only do neither of them continue to stop him from leaving, but Renly can’t bring himself to kill her.
** Viserys (who doesn't Remember) is so overwhelmed by Daenerys' seizure of power in Pentos and learning of Jon's existence that he becomes a much happier and well-adjusted human being. Dany speculates that he was essentially shocked back into sanity.
** Edmure Tully's personality change post-Remembering comes across as this to Patrek Mallister (who ''doesn't'' Remember), especially when he nearly has his archers fire their arrows on Stevron Frey when the latter calls for parley.
** Mace is so shocked to learn of [[spoiler: the conspiracy within the Maesters (which had assassinated his father Luthor, wife Alerie, and several of his unborn children]] that he personally kills his own Maester, who was involved. Olenna is shocked to find herself feeling proud of him for this.
** Also with Olenna, the various revelations about the Long Night and the Starks' newfound power base leave her visibly shaken and deeply worried, which Margaery notes is very unnerving.
** When [[TheStoic Ned Stark]] hits his RageBreakingPoint, he ''roars'' with anger and can get downright '''vicious''' when giving out a dressing-down, utterly terrifying everyone around him.
** Ned finally believes Theon went through some form of punishment in the last life when the once proud heir of House Greyjoy is reduced to tears and blubbering after one slap.
** When the Lannisters learn about [[spoiler:the Maesters allowing Joanna to die]], they all react with, for them, uncharacteristic levels of anger (and sorrow, in Genna's case).
** The normally bombastic [[spoiler:Greatjon Umber]] is left utterly depressed upon learning of [[spoiler:his son's betrayal of the Starks.]]
** The charismatic and chatty Renly has no idea what to say to Stannis after he reveals that Brienne was still loyal to him even after he'd been dead for years.
** Edd is actually visibly happy upon being reunited with Jon at the Wall.
* ParentalSubstitute:
** Osha became this to Rickon, something Catelyn notes with envy and despair. The first person he asked for upon waking up was not his mother, but Osha. She very clearly returns the love.
** Davos is this to Shireen. For every decision where we get to see his thought process, the first thing he considers is how this decision will affect her, and his care for her is strong enough to stay his hand from [[spoiler:ordering Qyburn's execution after he offers to treat her greyscale scars]]. For her part, Shireen essentially disowned Stannis after remembering what he did to her and clearly cares for Davos too.
* PetTheDog: Proving that Edmure isn't too far gone to those who don't Remember or weren't there at the end, when Fat Walda comes up as one of the Frey hostages, he decides she will be treated as a guest instead, and shows sympathy when he learns that she most likely Remembers.
* PhraseCatcher:
** Arya, ''no pies''.
** [[RunningGag "Who the fuck is Jon Targaryen?"]]
* PreCrimeArrest: Many characters are imprisoned or killed for the actions they took in the old timeline.
** Sandor kills Joffrey when he realizes the boy Remembers.
** Similarly, Irri decapitates Doreah when she finds her in the market.
** Theon is arrested and exiled to the Iron Islands on the threat of death should he return to the North.
** Renly orders the capture of Cersei, Jaime and their children, as well as the death of all the Redcloaks.
** [[spoiler:Doran kills Ellaria Sand, precipitating the Water Gardens Bloodbath.]]
** Most of House Frey gets wiped out for their role in the Red Wedding.
** [[spoiler:Greatjon Umber nearly kills his son Smalljon for how he betrayed the Starks.]]
** Ned actually refuses to do this to the Boltons; despite knowing of their future betrayal, he feels uncomfortable arresting or executing someone for something they haven’t actually done yet. Bran has to reveal that Roose has already committed several actual crimes in his torture chamber for Ned to go along with their plan.
* PrettyBoy: [[InvokedTrope Invoked]] by Robb after he learns about the relationship between Jaime and Brienne.
--> '''Robb''': He’s prettier than she is!
* ProperLady: Sansa isn't one anymore, to Septa Mordane's shock.
* ProperlyParanoid: When Tyrion discovers [[spoiler: the Maester’s conspiracy to kill his mother during his birth]], he has Bronn confiscate everyone’s weapons, put them outside, then not let anyone out until Tyrion says so. Considering that Jaime’s reaction is so violent that Bronn actually has to ''choke him out'', he was probably right to do so.
* PsychoSerum: [[spoiler: Lord Hightower strongly implies that Pycelle administered Aerys drugs that drove him mad as part of the Maester Conspiracy.]]
* PutOnABus: Varys. After providing an escape route in the first Kings Landing chapter (and revealing that he does Remember), he states that he has unfinished business and another way out of the city and leaves the others be. Several characters wonder where he is in later chapters, but nothing is ever made clear and he is yet to appear again. [[spoiler:The Tullys receive a letter from him in Chapter 41, confirming he’s still alive and out there somewhere.]]
* PuppetKing: After the rebelling slaves and the Second Sons take over Meereen, Daario appoints Hizdahr zo Loraq as ruler of the city, with Hizdahr quickly realizing that Daario will be the one really in charge.
* ThePurge: Several are carried out in retaliation for actions taken in the old timeline:
** Edmure, backed by numerous forces from the Riverlands, Vale, and North, kills every member of House Frey involved in the Red Wedding (which was most of them).
** House Forrester wipes out all of House Whitehill (except for Gwyn) for siding with the Boltons.
** [[spoiler: Every Maester involved in the conspiracy to manipulate and control the realm are executed by the Hightowers and other lords are alerted to how the conspiracy affected their families.]]
* RageBreakingPoint: Ned builds up a lot of frustration and anger over the various changes brought about by the Remembering, all of which come bursting out in Chapter 33 upon being told that Jaime is now an ally.
* RagtagBunchOfMisfits: Among those sent to the past are the three surviving children of House Stark (Arya, Sansa and Bran), their cousin (Jon Snow/Targaryen), his aunt/lover (Daenerys Targaryen) and the two Lannister brothers (Jaime and Tyrion).
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech:
** Ned to Theon for his betrayal. He also gives a brief but cutting one to Cat for never truly embracing the ways of the North and her many mistakes in the War of the Five Kings.
** Sansa to Septa Mordane when the latter self-righteously tries to assert authority over Sansa.
** Davos gives one to Stannis as soon as they wake up and remember everything, calling Stannis out over killing his only child as a HumanSacrifice to win some battle and his other mistakes and failures in the original timeline.
* RedemptionEqualsDeath:
** Melisandre absorbed so much of the excess magical power from the ritual when it started going haywire that while she saved Bran's life at the cost of her own, [[spoiler:her past self was also rendered brain dead]].
** The fact that Hizdahr died saving Daenerys' life means that the slaves will spare him and his family, on the condition that he rules the city with Daario.
* RelatedInTheAdaptation: Old Nan tells that her first son's (and thus Hodor[=/=]Willas' grandfather) father was Ser Duncan the Tall.
* RememberWhenYouBlewUpASun:
** No one is ever going to forget that Arya fed Walder Frey a pie made out of two of his grandsons and annihilated House Frey. Or fail to tell others about it (not helped by the fact that it's now in song form).
** Speaking of the Freys, Edmure's own brutal purge of them post-Remembering is rapidly becoming this as well, especially his brutal NoHoldsBarredBeatdown of Black Walder Frey with a rock. In fact, it and Arya's purge are both in the same song.
* RetGone: Since she killed him before he could ever rape her, [[spoiler:Gilly and Craster didn't conceive Little Sam. Gilly and Jon are devastated when they realize this]] and Jon wonders in horror how many other children ended up being erased from existence with the timeline being reset.
* ResetButtonSuicideMission: The story opens up on one, with the surviving members of the army of the living (numbering around 3000 people) having to [[HoldTheLine hold off]] the undead in what they know is a doomed LastStand in order to buy time for Bran and Melisandre to cast the spell to turn back the clock and better prepare Westeros for the Second Long Night.
* RousingSpeech: Jon gives one to the Northern lords after they pledge fealty. When Robb comments on it afterwards, Sansa points out that he picked it up from Daenerys.
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: The [=Greatjon=] says that this is why he and other Northerners liked having Talisa as Queen in the North -- unlike Southern ladies, she actually was willing to get her hands dirty to help their men.
* RunningGag: People referencing Arya's making of the Frey Pies, to the confusion of people who didn't live long enough to find out about that event. Also, her [[StealthHiBye sneaking up on people]].
** Also, multiple people wondering the same question: “Who the fuck is Jon Targaryen?”
* SanitySlippage:
** Stannis' time in the Black Cells has clearly damaged his psyche on top of his remembering burning Shireen to death and his other failures and mistakes in the previous timeline. By the time Robert and Renly visit him, he's seething in rage at the very sight of them, demanding to understand why it is that he's always been TheUnfavorite out of the three of them and wondering what Renly could have possibly done to earn Brienne's UndyingLoyalty, and when he learns about Jon Snow's true identity, he starts laughing at them before proclaiming himself to the "one true king of Westeros, Jon Targaryen".
** Lysa was hardly the picture of good mental health before the Remembering, but ''after''? She's madder than the Mad King and a threat to herself as much as she is to everyone else. It's so bad that Yohn Royce currently has her drugged to the gills with milk of poppy for everyone's sake.
** Much like Lysa, Cersei wasn't all there to begin with, but after she's thrown into the Black Cells, she starts losing her mind. Not helping the matter is Robert, who is deliberately tormenting her as payback for their toxic marriage.
* SanityStrengthening: Viserys starts out as the same arrogant bastard he was before, but after Daenerys hatches her dragons, he actually begins to be humble, realize that he was wrong, reacts with shock and shame when he finds out why he died, and starts training to become a knight. With no other explanation, Daenerys decides the sight of the dragons must have shocked him ''back into'' sanity.
* ScarsAreForever: Bran still has the mark on his arm from the Night King grabbing his arm in a vision in the old timeline. Likewise, he has another one from Valyrian sorcerers doing the same when he looked back to learn how they magically hatched dragon eggs.
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere:
** Upon realizing how badly the ritual has turned out, Jaime, Bronn and Sandor grab Tommen and Myrcella, as well as a few others who remember (most notably Barristan) and flee King's Landing.
** Talisa gets on a ship to head for the Free Cities out of shame for her part in how things turned out in the original timeline, [[spoiler:only to wind up in the company of Daenerys in Pentos]].
** After getting chewed out for everything he did, Stannis tells Davos to take care of Shireen. Davos was already planning on doing so, grabbing Shireen and high-tailing it for Winterfell. It later turns out that practically ''all'' of Stannis's men ditched him.
** When Salaadhor Saan realizes that what he Remembers wasn't a dream, he and his crew head for the Summer Islands in order to be as far from Westeros as possible when the Others come, after originally wanting to go all the way to Yi Ti before someone remembered they ''also'' have legends about undead armies and promised heroes.
* SelectiveObliviousness: PlayedForDrama.
** When Renly, Cressen, and a few others finally tell Robert who exactly Jon Targaryen is, Robert is completely unable to comprehend the words coming out of their mouths at first and it takes them several times before they finally sink in, at which point Robert flies into an UnstoppableRage.
** Tyrion notes that he has to reread the letter detailing [[spoiler: how the Maesters killed Joanna Lannister]] for him to realize just what he’s seeing. Cue TranquilFury.
* SetRightWhatOnceWentWrong: The entire premise of the story is the heroes going back in time to try and stop the Second Long Night from coming -- or at least have a united Westeros ready to face it.
* ShedTheFamilyName: Due to everything both his parents have done, Tommen wants to opt out of being legitimized as a Lannister to become a Waters. Tyrion and Kevan agree to honor his wishes for now but do plan on convincing him to take it back once the dust settles.
* ShipTease: Shireen is left blushing and flustered when Rickon touches her face to feel her greyscale scars.
* ShoutOut: Possibly when Daenerys is talking with Drogo:
-->'''Drogo:''' The Great Grass Sea belongs to no man.\
'''Daenerys:''' [[Film/TheLordOfTheRingsTheReturnOfTheKing I am no man.]]
* SinsOfOurFathers: Robert's hatred of Rhaegar is so strong that it extends to the other surviving Targaryens, including and ''especially'' Jon once he finds out the truth about his old friend's alleged bastard son. Everyone openly acknowledges that even the threat of the Others probably won't be enough for Robert to set aside his misplaced grudge against Jon, and that the only way to fully unite the realm against the Others is to go to war with Robert and either kill him or force him to bend the knee and allow Jon to take the throne.
* SlashedThroat: How Loras Tyrell dies in the early hours of the Remembering.
* SomethingOnlyTheyWouldSay: Tyrion to Tywin, quoting what he said verbatim in their final confrontation: "I am your son. I have always been your son". His startled reaction is what confirms to Tyrion that Tywin remembers.
* SpannerInTheWorks:
** House Wode proves to be a minor one. A House that, by all appearances, has no one who Remembers the future, they end up informing Robert of Hoster Tully declaring for Jon Targaryen, thereby ruining the attempts by those who do Remember everything to keep Robert out of the loop about Jon for as long as possible. ''Minor'', because by the time they did, every kingdom except the Stormlands and Dorne had already pledged or were in the process of pledging their fealty to Jon and Daenerys, making their actions only a temporary setback.
** The Remembering also [[spoiler: exposes the Maester conspiracy, which had gone unnoticed for centuries.]]
* SpitTake: At different points, Robb and Ned both end up choking on their ale when Jon and Howland, respectively, inform them about Arya falling in love.
* SplitPersonality: Everyone who is aware of the existence of “Reek” points out that Theon still has some of his mannerisms. Yara is explicitly trying to get that side of him removed completely, so far through a combination of GroinAttack and YouNeedToGetLaid.
* StealthHiBye: Arya has picked up this habit, to everyone's annoyance.
* StrangeMindsThinkAlike: In his brief appearance in the story, Joffrey revealed that like his mother he believed that Tyrion was the one who killed him, revealing that when he pointed at Tyrion as he died in the original timeline he was, from his perspective, identifying his killer, as Cersei had believed.
* StrangerInAFamiliarLand: All the time travelers who died early in the previous timeline have this issue, but it shows most with Ned Stark. He's essentially given a second chance at life with his beloved family but they have all suffered so much and changed so drastically that he barely recognizes any of them. It eventually boils over in his RageBreakingPoint above, and he has a quiet talk with Howland Reed afterwards to come to terms with it.
* SuccessionCrisis:
** Subverted with the Baratheons. They ''think'' they're in the middle of one after they find out about Jon Targaryen, with Stannis having been disinherited and rotting away in the Black Cells and Shireen having gone missing (Stannis left her in Davos Seaworth's care and sent them away), leaving Renly as Robert's only viable heir. In ''reality'', they're an AuthorityInNameOnly -- all the other kingdoms except Dorne and the Stormlands have sworn fealty to Jon, and Dorne is stuck in a CivilWar right now, leaving their involvement limited to nonexistent (they wouldn't side with either of the claimants anyway). The only other two Targaryen heirs, Daenerys and Viserys, are fully supportive of Jon's claim, with the former possibly even marrying him down the line if things work out. Put this all together, and anyone with a brain can see that Jon's practically king already and that the Baratheons are the only ones yet to realize this.
** Dorne plays this straight, even if they haven't referenced it directly. Due to Trystane's death in the Water Gardens Bloodbath, Doran's current heir is his younger brother Oberyn, a hot-headed middle-aged man with no legitimate children. If they both die during Dorne's ongoing CivilWar, an already horrible situation will go straight to the crapper and it's likely that other regions will have to suppress the violence until the Crown can intervene.
* TemptingFate:
** After learning that Tyrion is their ally and friend, Ned is glad that at least they aren't talking about trusting the Kingslayer.
** [[spoiler:The Maester conspirators at the Citadel were so confident in their machinations they kept extensive, meticulous records of their actions. This only made it incredibly easy to root out which Maesters were in on it when Samwell Tarly invaded the Citadel.]]
* ThatManIsDead: Bran repeatedly tells people that he's not really Brandon Stark anymore, he's [[InsistentTerminology the Three-Eyed Raven now]]. Most people who knew him in the future all agree with him on that.
--> '''Jon''': Bran will always be my brother... but the [[DreamWeaver Three Eyed Raven]] is ''not'' Bran.
* ThatWasNotADream: When everyone wakes up on the first day of the timeline reset and remembers the events of the previous timeline, they initially think everything was AllJustADream or they're in the afterlife... and then the AwfulTruth sinks in.
* TheTimeTravellersDilemma: In "The Wall... and So Much More", Jon is horrified to discover that, thanks to the Remembering, [[spoiler:Little Sam has not been conceived and thus he will never exist. Gilly herself is already devastated while Edd is especially worried about how Sam is going to take it since using the spell was ''his'' idea]].
* ThisExplainsSoMuch: After being informed of [[spoiler:the Maesters' conspiracy, Luwin goes down to the Winterfell dungeons to speak with Qyburn and tell him about it. After some reflection, Qyburn admits that does explain certain things in retrospect, such as why some supposedly open-minded archmaesters always dismissed his ideas and findings even before he began his more questionable activities]].
* ThisIsGonnaSuck:
** When Lord Rosby, Cressen, and Renly learn exactly who Jon Targaryen is and what it means, and realize they'll have to tell Robert, they are utterly terrified of how he's going to react. Their worries are proven right when Robert [[TantrumThrowing destroys the council chambers]].
** Jon has a brief moment of this when Greatjon starts making references to what Arya did to the Freys in front of the still unaware Robb and Ned. He too is correct.
* TheDogBitesBack: [[spoiler: Qyburn kills the Mountain]] over nearly being killed in the original timeline.
* ThisMeansWar: Jon Targaryen's ''very existence'' is grounds for war, let alone over half the realm pledging themselves to him, as far as Robert Baratheon is concerned. That's why communication with King's Landing was limited; everyone that Remembers that far knows that once Robert learned of Jon's existence, rebellion is inevitable.
* TookALevelInBadass:
** Edmure Tully. Yes, ''that'' Edmure Tully. He sacks The Twins and beats Black Walder Frey to death with a rock when the latter demands a TrialByCombat.
** In something more akin to "regaining lost levels in badass", Robert's reaction to the looming civil war is to get back into fighting shape. And while he's still far from his prime, he's certainly doing better than the fat drunk slob he was beforehand.
** Qyburn, of all people, [[spoiler: managed to kill the Mountain. Yes, ''The Mountain''.]]
* TooDumbToLive: The reaction everyone in-universe has to Loras Tyrell choosing to attack Jaime and Barristan, two of the greatest swordsmen alive, at the ''same time''. Olenna doesn't even bother with baying for Jaime's blood anymore once she learns about it, as she knows the Tyrells will lose any and all sympathy once that fact becomes widespread.
* ToThePain: Tyrion has Bronn confiscate his uncles', brother's, and, surprisingly, his aunt's weapons before [[spoiler:revealing the Maesters conspiracy and announcing the truth of Creylen's treachery]] for this reason: they'd kill him way, ''way'' too fast for the suffering Tyrion personally wants to inflict upon him.
* TragicKeepsake: The opening chapter mentions that Gendry carries Arya's Valyrian steel knife.
* TrialByCombat: Black Walder Frey demands one from Edmure Tully. Edmure [[TakeAThirdOption opts to simply]] [[NoHoldsBarredBeatdown beat the man to death instead]].
* TryToFitThatOnABusinessCard: Daenerys' canonical very LongList of accumulated titles is lampshaded several times: when Tyrion reveals himself as her Hand to Tywin, he starts listing her titles but gives up halfway through. Later, after learning that Dany has conquered Pentos and named herself Queen, Sansa snarks how that's on top of all her other titles, which she seems to collect like seashells from a beach. Even the narration gets in on it by never actually listing all of her titles all at once, even when a character does; at one point, someone goes to say her titles and the narration cuts to the end.
* TwirlOfLove:
** When Gendry and Arya finally reunite at Winterfell, Arya runs towards Gendry and he catches her in his arms. They hug for a long while to everyone's amusement and Catelyn's horror.
** Earlier, Sam and Talla do a non-romantic version when Talla wakes up and Remembers.
* UnderestimatingBadassery: While Barristan does not originally think much of Grenn and Pyp thanks to the casual way they interact with Jon, he begins to respect Grenn more when he learns that he died taking down a giant, even calling it his honor to knight the man in response.
* UndyingLoyalty:
** [[spoiler:It was this trope in relation to Winterfell and the Starks that led Old Nan to abandon her first love, even though she was really in fully reciprocated love, her beloved could have easily given her and their family a bright future and even nobility, and in fact, he would have insisted on marrying her once he knew she was with child. As she confesses to Arya, her husband wasn't the father of her first child - it was ''Ser Duncan the Tall'', making him Hodor's great-grandfather.]]
** Stannis reveals to Renly that Brienne was the one to kill him, still determined to avenge her former king years after Renly had already died.
** Grenn and Pyp both admit that they struggle with the fact that the Wildlings are crossing the Wall, even if they understand why it's necessary - but because they trust Jon's judgment, they won't question it any further.
* UnstoppableRage:
** When Robb sees Theon after waking up, he becomes so furious that being held back by both Jon and Jory Cassel with all their strength, having Arya wrapped around his leg and Sansa screaming in his face to calm down is ''barely'' enough to keep him from killing Theon. Then Ser Rodrik gets in on it, and Bran has to warg into Hodor to stop him from doing the same.
** The Lannisters collectively become so enraged upon finding out that [[spoiler:Joanna Lannister was killed through inaction by Maester Creylen that Jaime ''smashes Tyrion's desk'' and has to be knocked out by Bronn, Kevan ''throws his chair across the room'', and Stafford ''clenches his chair so hard the arms break''.]]
** When Robert learns that Jon Snow is really Jon Targaryen, that he's Rhaegar's son by Lyanna, and that Ned is betraying him, he goes utterly ''berserk'', wrecking the Small Council chambers, knocking out Meryn Trant with a chair to the face, and sending everyone else fleeing.
* VillainExitStageLeft: In Chapter 46, [[spoiler: the Night King flees from the attack on the Northerner/Wildling camp when the Children of the Forest help turn the tide against his forces.]]
* VitriolicBestBuds: Grenn and Pyp show their affection for each other by mocking each other at every opportunity.
* WeUsedToBeFriends: Robb is heartbroken to learn that his friend Smalljon Umber betrayed the Starks to the Boltons, and is totally unrepentant about it, feeling that the Starks don't deserve to rule the North because of their southern ties.
* WhamEpisode:
** Chapter 25. [[spoiler: Shae Remembers, and goes after Tyrion with a dagger.]]
** Chapter 40. [[spoiler: Wights are somehow ''already'' past the Wall, and a group of them kills Jojen while trying to kill Bran and Ned.]]
** Chapter 41. [[spoiler: Bran reveals that Euron has apparently died offscreen, suggests that the Night King might somehow Remember, and points out that winter appears to be coming faster than last time.]]
** Chapter 46. [[spoiler: It's confirmed that the Night King Remembers during an attack on the Northerner/Wildling camp, which is driven off as Leaf and the other Children of the Forest arrive to join the humans.]]
* WhamLine: In Chapter 41, this exchange marks the point where things start going FromBadToWorse:
-->'''Bran:''' [[spoiler: Before he died,]] Jojen and I were pretty certain that [[spoiler: the days are getting shorter.]]\
'''Jon:''' [[spoiler: Of course they're getting shorter, winter is coming.]]\
'''Bran:''' No, I mean [[spoiler: it's happening faster than before.]]
* WhatTheHellHero: In general, ''a lot'' of people react this way upon learning of what other people did in the original timeline.
** Bloodraven calls out Bran for casting the Remembering spell. Bran counters that by pointing out [[IDidWhatIHadToDo he didn't have any other option]] if he wanted to prevent the Others' NearVillainVictory.
** Quite a few people are disturbed by Edmure's brutal purge of the Freys, as horrible as the Red Wedding was.
** Barristan to Jaime for keeping his reasons for killing the Mad King secret.
** Ned Stark to Sansa, when he learns how she executed Ramsay Bolton. [[spoiler: And again to Bran when Ned finds out he had used his powers to kill Ramsay again, first by turning his hounds on him and Myranda and then by setting [[BearsAreBadNews a bear]] on him]].
** Jon calls out Bran for not warning him that [[spoiler:the Night King has been blocking his visions of the Others]]. Bran counters that telling him wouldn't have made a difference.
** Benjen calls out Ned for keeping Jon's parentage and Lyanna and Rhaegar's true relationship a secret from him, especially considering the fact that as brothers, they should trust one another. Ned cannot find a good response to this.
** Ned absolutely ''tears'' into Catelyn in Chapter 7 over how her vindictive temper and [[DidntThinkThisThrough rash decision-making]] (particularly her handling of the Lannister hostages and bethrothing Robb ''and'' Arya to the Freys) were what led to Robb losing in the War of the Five Kings and things going so badly for the rest of their children.
* WhatWereYouThinking: Ned rips into Catelyn over her decision to kidnap Tyrion Lannister in Chapter 7.
* WhyAreYouNotMySon: When Sam reveals the true extent of his intelligence after [[spoiler:convincing the Tyrells to make him Lord Paramount until the Others are defeated]], Olenna laments the fact that he wasn't born to [[TheChessmaster her]] and instead to [[TheBrute Randyll Tarly]], who clearly didn't see Sam's true value.
* WiseBeyondTheirYears: Justified with [[spoiler: Ned Umber and Lyanna Mormont]], who weren't all that old before their minds were sent back in time, and thusly they have the mental capacities of young preteens -- including the power of speech -- and the physical capacities of the infants they are in the present.
* TheWorfEffect: Each of the "great players" of the Game of Thrones suffer this after the Remembering. To wit:
** Petyr Baelish is killed by Jaime Lannister within ''hours'' of the Remembering. Even if that hadn't happened, Bran made sure Littlefinger ''wouldn't'' Remember, meaning the man was a dead man walking.
** Tywin Lannister is usurped by Tyrion in the same general timeframe, and is now a non-entity under house arrest.
** Cersei Lannister is immediately taken into custody by Renly and then tossed into the Black Cells.
** House Tyrell (temporarily) loses control of the Reach to Samwell Tarly, who then engages Dickon to Margaery to ensure he still has some influence there after the Long Night, upon which he'll give back control of the Reach to them.
** Euron Greyjoy was a dangerous threat in the previous timeline, having [[HeroKiller killed both Arya and Brienne]]. After the Remembering, he's taken out pretty quickly by [[spoiler:a ship of Yi-Tish pirates]]. It helps that Bran also made specifically sure he would not remember anything from the previous timeline.
* YouAreInCommandNow:
** More like "I am in command now". Samwell Tarly, Tyrion Lannister, and Yara Greyjoy each usurped their respective fathers. Later, with the backing of the Reach lords who remember, Sam takes the title of Warden of the South from Mace, in order to better prepare for the incoming invasion of the dead.
** When Maester Cressen arrives at King's Landing to drop off the insensate Stannis, Robert immediately names him Grand Maester.
* YouDoNotWantToKnow:
** Bran's reaction when he's asked what's happening in Dorne post-Remembering. It turns out Dorne is basically tearing itself apart, attacking the Martells, rallying to join Jon, or taking revenge against Ellaria and the Sand Snakes. It turns into such a circus the guards don't know what they are supposed to do.
** Sansa warns Catelyn about this when the latter demands to know everything that happened to Arya in the old timeline. However, Cat persists, and she comes to regret it.
** The Starks' steward, Veyon Poole, who predeceased his children, asks Sansa what happened to his daughter Jeyne, who doesn't Remember. Sansa just tells him that they should be glad that she doesn't (as she'd ended up in one of Baelish's brothels).
