->''All tales have a beginning, impacting the future more than anything else.. The sands of time each carry a fragment of the past within each individual grain. So long as memories exist, the beginning shall never ebb into the cold and unforgiving seas of mystery. All tales revisit their beginning... This one is no exception.''

''Soul Eater Zeta'' is a ''Manga/SoulEater'' fanfic written by [[https://www.fanfiction.net/u/1244313/CertainDestiny CertainDestiny]] that can be found [[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/10942508/1/Soul-Eater-Zeta here]], [[http://archiveofourown.org/works/3100997/chapters/6718520 here]], or [[http://grade-amasterpiece.deviantart.com/art/Soul-Eater-Zeta-Chapter-1-503537827 here]]. ''Soul Eater Zeta'' is a prequel to ''Fanfic/SoulEaterTroubledSouls'' and one (albeit fanmade) to the ''Manga/SoulEater'' series itself, set 23 years in the past.

The story begins on Monday, March 1st during a day of orientation for new students. Among them is a young girl named Kami Okubo, who begins to meet new people as soon as she finishes her first steps up the Academy's infamous staircase. However, her first day isn't all sunshine and rainbows. Right in the middle of it, an incident revolving around "The Bloody Shield" happens, and it seems a group called The Zeta has started to become active.

Like with ''Soul Eater: Troubled Souls'', ''[[https://www.fanfiction.net/s/10830606/1/Soul-Eater-Saeculum Soul Eater: Saeculum]]'' is supposed to help explain and/or expand upon stuff that may be glossed over in the story itself.

This fanfic is divided into the following story arcs:
* Adjusting to School Life Arc (Chapters 1-5)
* Vlad the Impaler Arc (Chapters 6-ongoing)

----
!!This fanfic contains examples of the following tropes:
* AcademyOfAdventure / ExtranormalInstitute: Death Weapon Meister Academy, natch.
* AllThereInTheManual: Similar to how ''Manga/SoulEaterNot'' was to ''Manga/SoulEater'', ''Soul Eater Zeta'' provides some extra information to help flesh out the setting in ''Soul Eater: Troubled Souls'', such as how curriculum and career choices are handled.
** And, of course, the author has his [=DeviantArt=] account to provide character profiles and glossaries.
* AntagonistTitle: It's too early to tell, but it appears The Zeta are the core antagonists in this story named "Soul Eater Zeta."
** According to the author in Chapter 4, their logo is in the main image!
* BadassFamily: Legacy Families. These are families or clans that have permanently impacted DWMA in its very long tenure. The term is a catch-all for those with decorated and respected backgrounds, but five Legacy Families in particular are identified as the top dogs:
** The Olmett Family. Not only have they been around since the original generation of Academy students, but they are responsible for setting combat standards.
** The Vladingham Family. Known for winning the organization many critical battles in the struggle against the Witches.
** The Nakatsukasa Clan. They discovered Soul Resonance, the most fundamental part of Meisters and Weapons. Also, according to Isaiah, they set the standards for the roles of Demon Weapons.
** The Moncharmins. This family has used their wealth and affluence to help expand and develop the DWMA.
** House Shuzen. The first individuals to create Death Scythes.
* BringMyBrownPants: Spirit literally shits himself when he collides into Noel in Chapter 2.
* CallForward: In canon, Lord Death teaches that fear is the most important tool a fighter can have, that it keeps you sharp and strong. Amagai basically summarizes this belief, conveying it to all the freshmen, before he takes on Noel.
* CombinationAttack: Archon Eos and Gratia pull off one in Chapter 4, combining the former's [[HolyHandGrenade Anthelion]] with the latter's [[BlowYouAway Notus]]. That didn't keep Katrina and Braxton down.
* DefeatMeansRespect: Rosalind and Kami start getting along immediately after the conclusion of their intense standoff at end of the dodgeball game.
* [[AnimalWrongsGroup Demon Weapon Wrongs Group]]: The Zeta.
* DodgeballIsHell: The second half of Chapter 3 is devoted to a hardcore dodgeball game that the narration likens to a "simulation of hunters and the hunted."
* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: This exchange.
-->'''[[LovableSexManiac Roger]]''': (''unsuccessfully trying to flirt with Katrina'') Well, if you don't have anything to do, perhaps you and I can enjoy each other's company?\
'''[[TheDitz Diana]]''': Aww, I wanna join!\
'''Roger ''': Well the more, the merrier~
* DoomedByCanon: Don't get used to ''any'' Vladingham or future Vladingham in this story.
* {{Fanon}}: The name "Kami" actually comes from a mistranslation. But, you know, don't let that stop you.
* FantasticRankSystem: Just like in canon and the original fanfic, Meisters and Weapons can be ranked either Three-Stars, Two-Stars, or One-Stars (highest to lowest). NOT students are Zero-Stars.
* FBIAgent: Braxton and Gwendolyn are prospective members of the DWMA Global Bureau of Investigation, which is basically an Academy-exclusive version of the FBI, in the same vein as the canon DWMA CIA.
* ForegoneConclusion: As a prequel to both a fanfic and the source material, some things are inevitable. The question is how it's going to happen, if it's going to be shown.
** We all know Spirit and Franken are gonna break up, Kami is gonna become his partner, she's going to rise up in the ranks to become the top of her class, and make Spirit a Death Scythe.
** Speaking of Franken, no matter how many badasses get their chance to show their credentials, he's going to graduate with the title of the [[WorldsStrongestMan strongest meister in Academy history]].
** Every Death Scythe shown as students in this prequel will (or should) become Death Scythes in the future. Nobody else, nobody new.
** Noel will get better. Much better.
* {{Foil}}: Spirit and Roger. Two [[LovableSexManiac Lovable Sex Maniacs]] vying for the same girl. One is a Demon Weapon with a psychotic Meister, the other is a Meister with an equally brusque Demon Weapon. Factoring in ForegoneConclusion, Spirit's habits lead to some family drama whereas Roger (so far) is single but fine.
* FreudianExcuse:
** Edward and Rukia suspect that Noel's got one or something to make him act the way he does.
** Francis has the first official one. He literally had a MoralityPet in the form of a bird named Lana. Then some assholes had to go and kill her before his very eyes while giving him a BreakingLecture. It's why he is so detached and rude.
* FriendshipMoment: Kami and Francis have one towards the end of Chapter 5, finally culminating in the latter getting over what happened to him.
* GenerationXerox: It was already established in canon that most of the adults knew each other as classmates/students. In this story, in addition to ''that'', the parents of Caius, Claudia, and the Ricardsen Twins are part of the circle in some way, shape, or form.
** OC Ramses Nygus is the father of Mira Nygus. His job is being the PE Coach. Not only does Mira work for the Academy when she gets older, guess what she usually supervises?
* GratuitousLatin: The Zeta ends their demonstrations with the phrase ''absit invidia'' which means "let there be no envy or ill will." The Zeta are basically asking listeners to not interpret their words as hubris or offensive.
* GroinAttack: Roger is on the receiving end of one during the dodgeball. It was accidental, and it was meant for Rukia.
* HarmfulToMinors: The ending scene to Chapter 2 involves a jack-in-the-box and a little girl. [[NightmareFuel This trope is listed for a reason]].
* HeldGaze: Kami and Spirit do this in the middle of a primal dodgeball game, no less! Too bad it got ruined.
* ImprobableWeapon: Discussed. Katrina, Braxton, Eos, and Gratia are talking about their fight with Eos and Gratia. Gwendolyn offhandedly hopes [[LightEmUp Eos's]] weapon form isn't a flashlight. Braxton contends he wouldn't be surprised considering Gratia was a FumaShuriken.
* LimpAndLivid: Noel.
* LoveAtFirstSight: The first time Spirit and Roger see Kami is when they officially get smitten. May double as an AmazonChaser moment because this happened when she made a big play during Chapter 2's volleyball game.
* MegatonPunch: Marie " The Pulverizer" strikes again in Chapter 2. Her victim? A hapless volleyball. Everyone wisely got out of the way.
* MomentKiller:
** In Chapter 4, Katrina, Braxton, Eos, and Gratia have an intense stare down, complete with [[BattleAura Battle Auras]] and ChunkyUpdraft. When they move to clash, finally going all-out... Cyra appears out of nowhere in grand, GenkiGirl style to interrupt the fight. You can almost ''hear'' the record-scratch sound effect going off.
** In Chapter 3, Kami saves Spirit from a dodgeball, resulting in her being on top of him. They stare at each other, and Spirit tries to act cool... but the ShipTease moment is interrupted when Rosalind blitzes Amagai in the face. Naturally, Kami goes to check up on her first friend. Spirit isn't pleased.
* MoodWhiplash: In the very first chapter, no less! Things are going good, Kami getting admitted like normal. Then, bam! Two students get knocked through a wall, and everyone starts freaking out when the [[TheDreaded The Bloody Shield]] enters.
* MyNameIsInigoMontoya: When it's just Kami and resident superathlete Rosalind during the dodgeball game, Kami introduces herself as part of a gambit to catch Rosalind off-guard to finally end the game. It works.
* OCStandIn: Kami is a proper example given that she's TheGhost in canon.
* OminousMusicBoxTune: "Pop Goes the Weasel" plays during that creepy moment at the end of Chapter 2.
* OnlyAFleshWound: Noel gets slashed across his torso in Chapter 1 by Amagai. When the fight ends, he walks out as if he got a splinter in his finger instead.
%%* OrdinaryHighSchoolStudent: Kami. [[ForegoneConclusion Won't last]] [[{{Prequel}} long]].
%%* OriginalCharacter: Amagai, Rukia, Noel again... If you're reading Troubled Souls too, this shouldn't be a surprise.
* OriginalGeneration: Inevitable, really. It is a prequel after all. The canon characters themselves wouldn't be enough to justify the large setting.
%%* PassionateSportsGirl: Rosalind. Mira's portrayed this way too.
* PickedLast: For the volleyball game in Chapter 2, team captains Claude and Amagai face quite the dilemma regarding who has to pick the final student. Who is it, you ask? None other than good-old, infamous, unstable Noel Isaac Ricardsen.
* PreAsskickingOneLiner:
** A non-combat example (dodgeball game).
-->'''Rosalind''': Okay! Anyone else want some?\
'''Kami''': I do. (''springs into action, ultimately setting the stage for their showdown'')
* {{Prequel}}: To ''Fanfic/SoulEaterTroubledSouls''.
* TheRival: Spirit and Roger, and that's before Kami entered the picture.
* ScaryJackInTheBox: The end of Chapter 2 involves one.
* SecondEpisodeIntroduction: Well, Second ''Chapter'' introduction, but you know.. Anyway, while Chapter 1 introduces Kami and other main characters, the succeeding one gives a before-class introduction of other supporting characters.
* ShakingTheRump: A no-name student does the taunt variation to Claude during the dodgeball game but got hit before Claude could do the honors himself.
* ShoutOut:
** The maiden name given to Kami in this story is Okubo. As in Atsushi Ohkubo.
** Chapter 3 - One of the students on the victorious Team 1 yells out [[Music/QueenBand "WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS!"]]
** [[Literature/WheresWally Where's Waldo?]] You mean, Rosalind Waldo? She's here.
** During the dodgeball game, Spirit calls himself [[Franchise/YuGiOh "The King of Games"]].
* SnarkToSnarkCombat: Braxton and Gratia's banter quickly becomes this in Chapter 4.
-->'''Gratia''': (''intercepted a blow from Braxton'') Didn't your parents teach you to let people finish talking?\
'''Braxton''': Leave my mother and father out of this.
* TennisBoss: Non-video game example. Spirit and Roger become one to each other during the volleyball game, being rivals and all, at the expense of everyone else. It took Spirit accidentally bumping into Noel for it to stop.
* TrashTalk: Especially during moments of competition. Here's this gem during the dodgeball game.
-->'''Ramses''': You guys had better hurry up. Ten minutes are left in class, and you still need to shower and change.\
'''Rosalind''': We'll finish this in 2 minutes. Not a second over.\
(''Later, after Claude is eliminated'') \
'''Claude''': It appears you didn't finish this in two minutes, Miss Waldo.
* VagueAge: Meta example. In the author notes for Chapter 3, the author laments this trope in regards to the canon Soul Eater adults, praying that the ages he gave them here don't break the readers' WillingSuspensionOfDisbelief.
