''Back to the Frollo'' is a piece of fanfiction reviewed by WebVideo/TheFanFictionCritic. It was written by "Crazed Writer" and "Creator/FrolloFreak". It's the [[SarcasmMode sweeping, romantic]] tale of how a SassyBlackWoman named Danisha discovered a [[Franchise/BackToTheFuture time-traveling Chevy]], traveled to 1480s Paris, met [[WesternAnimation/TheHunchbackOfNotreDameDisney Judge Claude Frollo]], and fell madly in love with him. It can be read [[http://crazedwriter.tripod.com/fanfiction1.html here]].

!!Tropes:

* AffectionateNickname: Danisha calls Frollo "sugarbritches."
* AuthorAppeal: Being that Danisha is pretty much a self-insert for Creator/FrolloFreak, all of her likes are obnoxiously shoved into the story. Soul food, Creator/{{Motown}} music, American games like kickball and UsefulNotes/{{Baseball}}, the color purple, and folk tales about slave heroes, black history, and poetry are all blatantly, and rather rudely, forced upon to all the other characters who all inexplicably love them. [[OutOfCharacter Including Frollo.]]
* BerserkButton: Danisha seems to have many, among them being mistaken for a Gypsy.
** If anybody turns down the advances of a powerful man like Frollo, Danisha is ''pissed''.
* BigBeautifulWoman: Danisha, according to how she describes herself.
* BigEater: Both Danisha and Frollo, though the latter is never seen eating enough to qualify.
* BoomerangBigot: Danisha slut-shames Esmeralda constantly even though she has (implied) sex with Frollo on a regular basis.
* TheBully: Danisha comes across as this often. Most of her fights are against captives and/or victims, and the antagonists that upset her most are often literal children (e.g. Malus).
* ColdBloodedTorture: Esmeralda's ultimate fate.
-->Danisha: Hmmm --- 'cruel and unusual punishment' --- a lot of folks in my time would say, "Bring back the rack!"
* ColorMotif: Probably unintentional, but the color purple shows up a lot.
* ConflictBall: Characters swap the ConflictBall over and over again throughout the series. They frequently become angry with each other for no reason, like when Danisha gets mad at Malus over him being a responsible sibling even though she takes the role of a big sister figure herself multiple times. In the sequel, there's a minor subplot in which Frollo becomes irate at Quasimodo and Iggy for singing 20th-century songs in a tavern late at night, even though they had been doing similar things long before that particular scene and he had never had an issue before. Most of the conflicts are short and have very little bearing on the plot.
* CostumePorn: Any time Danisha's outfits are described, and any time Frollo's outfits are described.
--> He wasn't wearing the splendid black velvet judicial robe with its jewel-trimmed yoke and epaulets. Instead, he wore a casual, hunter-style outfit complete with tall boots, tunic, form-fitting black hose, a sweeping cloak, and the famous triangular hat with its long red veil. The entire ensemble fitted his tall, slender form perfectly.
** In another moment, how Danisha describes herself.
--> I smiled. Maybe, just this once, I could believe that he was paying attention to my attire; I wore a silk shantung dress of deepest violet, very elegant and figure-enhancing. My hair was upswept in a stylish twist, a la En Vogue, held with a sparkling amethyst ornament. Matching highheeled peau de soie shoes, a gold and amethyst necklace, and oversized earrings completed the ensemble. Even my makeup followed the same color scheme, right down to the deep-violet lips. Now I am by no means skinny; in fact, I am what you would call a "healthy" girl. Not fat, but all womanly curves and pleasing-to-the-eye fleshiness. But why should I apologize? I guess Claude liked what he saw because he couldn't stop checking me out.
* CulturalPosturing: Danisha thinks very highly of her Indiana culture and likes to put it on display whenever she can in a culture and time period that isn't hers.
* CuteAndPsycho: Esmeralda is characterized as this. According to the author, her sweet personality during ''The Hunchback of Notre Dame'' was all an act cleverly designed to hide her manipulative, bitchy nature.
* DefrostingTheIceQueen: Easygoing, fun-loving Danisha has to get strict, uptight Frollo to loosen up!
* {{Delinquents}}: Malus and his group of friends. It's more of an InformedAttribute, though.
* DisproportionateRetribution:
** Malus shows up at Danisha's party to collect his younger siblings, for whom he is responsible. He insists on taking them home, even though it's time for ice cream. As he leaves, Danisha demands that Frollo arrest him...for [[FelonyMisdemeanor denying his siblings ice cream and taking them home]].
--->To quote WebVideo/TheFanFictionCritic: That bastard! That bastard! How dare he? How dare he decide that it's time to go home? How dare he act like a responsible older brother and bring his younger siblings home for bed? How dare he? How fucking dare he?
** At the end of the story, Esmeralda is beaten up by Danisha and then arrested and tortured because she turned Frollo down.
--> "I put on my cloak and hat as Claude summoned the guards to take Esmeralda away to the Palace of Justice. As the soldiers put her in shackles, I walked up to her, squared my shoulders proudly, and in a firm, clear voice, said, "Baby, let me give you some advice. The next time you give a man an almost lap-dance, get him all hot and sweaty, and don't follow through...Honey, don't expect him to be too accommodating the second time." That said, the soldiers dragged the gypsy dancer away."
* DistressedDude: Frollo in most of ''What REALLY Happened''.
* TheDitz: Phoebus, according to most of the characters (although he never does anything very ditzy; it's more of an InformedAttribute).
* EntitledToHaveYou: Frollo and Danisha act like this towards Esmeralda. Danisha beats her up in public and has her sent off to be tortured because she's so upset by the fact that Esmeralda didn't want to be one of Frollo's secret mistresses.
* {{Fangirl}}: Frollo is accosted by a group of fangirls after his clothes are stolen.
* FatBastard: Danisha is described as being 'curvy', and 'voluptuous', but if you look at 'Suspiciously Specific Denial' and 'What The Hell Hero?' below, you soon realize that's she's this.
* FauxActionGirl: Danisha. Most of her "fights" occur against captives.
* FelonyMisdemeanor: Danisha accidentally breaks one of Frollo's windows while playing baseball with some children. She offers to work for him until she has paid off the cost of the window. He agrees on the condition that he keep the baseball until she has paid off the debt. Danisha responds to this by [[LawOfDisproportionateResponse throwing a tantrum and screaming at Frollo]]. The audience is expected to side with her even though Frollo is being perfectly reasonable - he originally wanted to arrest her and throw her in the dungeon for breaking the window.
* FemaleMisogynist: Danisha, as proven by her TheReasonYouSuckSpeech to Esmeralda, where she essentially tells Esmeralda that she was '''asking''' for Frollo to try and rape her.
* FoodPorn: Danisha and her friends ''love'' to cook up modern American foods - barbecue chicken, pecan pies, ice cream, etc - for Frollo and his friends.
--> We really knocked ourselves out to make this party a truly memorable experience. Fern and Kyle cooked mounds of barbequed ribs, chicken, and turkey (Kyle's idea -- to introduce medieval Parisians to native American foods). Jacki and I worked overtime, preparing salads and scrumptious desserts. I proudly pointed to the pecan cake.
* ForgotAboutHisPowers: The characters all have access to flawless and completely safe time-travel devices that somehow avoid creating paradoxes. They ''never'' remember this when they're in danger.
* GivingRadioToTheRomans: Danisha introduces modern food, music, technology, and American sports (kickball and baseball) to the medieval peasants of 1480s France. She also teaches Quasimodo about early American history, including the Underground Railroad and the Civil War.
* GoneSwimmingClothesStolen: While going for a swim, Frollo gets all his clothes (and his horse) stolen by a group of children led by an ex-lieutenant who wants to get back at Frollo for firing him. [[DownplayedTrope Frollo's cape is spared, however.]]
* GroinAttack: Clopin makes the mistake of cornering Danisha in a dark alley and threatening her. She responds by kneeing him in the groin and running away.
* HairTriggerTemper: Danisha, even though the author insists that she is kind and patient. Frollo can also come across as this despite the author's best intentions of portraying him as a kindhearted man.
* HomeschooledKids: Quasimodo - despite being in his 20s - is visited in the bell tower by both Frollo and Danisha for lessons. Danisha's lessons include early American history and African-American poetry.
* {{Hypocrite}}: Danisha takes great pride in teaching others about things like the Civil War and Underground Railroad, yet has no problem cheering on Frollo in his systematic oppression of the Romani people of Paris.
* IdiotBall: Every time a character is in trouble or facing a time-sensitive situation, they get tossed the IdiotBall and forget that they have the ability to time-travel. Frollo gets a particularly bad IdiotBall in ''Didn't It Blow Your Mind, Claude Frollo?'' when he's trying to find out who stole a precious artifact, and he remembers that he can time travel, but it never seems to occur to him that he can use that ability to either track down the thieves or prevent the artifact from being stolen in the first place. Rather, he decides to go to the 1990s to talk to Danisha's parents. To make matters even worse, he mentions how clever and difficult-to-outsmart he is multiple times.
* InformedAttractiveness: The author repeatedly goes out of her way tell us what a sexbomb Frollo is, when in reality he looks like this. [[http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/29/ClaudeFrollo.PNG]]
* InformedAttribute: Danisha prattles on about how much Frollo is such a BigEater, though he never eats enough in the story to qualify as much.
** Also, both he and Danisha are described as being as kind, loving, and sweet-natured people, when in reality they're sociopathic, narcissistic, and petty. Danisha in particular is repeatedly described as kind and patient despite having an obvious HairTriggerTemper.
** Many of the antagonistic characters get this, too; Esmeralda is described as being borderline pathologically manipulative even though her only real crime was not wanting to have sex with Frollo, Malus is described as a gang leader and a hooligan even though he acts like a responsible older brother who doesn't want his little siblings accepting food from adult strangers, and Phoebus is described as amazingly, worryingly dimwitted even though he never does anything particularly stupid.
** When Esmeralda has been captured and Danisha is meant to deliver a scathing TheReasonYouSuckSpeech, Frollo Freak doesn't actually bother to write it. Instead, we are given an author's note claiming that the speech was so amazingly savage, epic, and clever that it was "unprintable," coupled by the narrative and several characters expressing their astonishment at how brutal said non-existent speech was. Presumably, this is because Frollo Freak isn't actually a good enough writer to come up with an epic enough smack-down, couldn't think of enough things actually wrong with Esmeralda to bring up, or both.
-->''NOTICE FROM THE AUTHOR: The remainder of [=FrolloFreak=]'s vocal chastisement of Esme can't be printed, because it's '''UNPRINTABLE!''' The rest is cool, though. :-)''
* InNameOnly: Frollo. If you didn't see it at first, wait until he tells Danisha that he ''doesn't believe in witchcraft''.
** Also Clopin, who, in the prequel, wants so badly to be the archdeacon that he drugs Frollo with hallucinogenics and puts an identical imposter in his place.
* IronicNickname: Frollo's coal-black horse is named Snowball. Danisha points out the irony to him.
--> I looked at Frollo quizzically. "Minister Frollo, this horse is not white, he's black. Naming a black horse 'Snowball'?...That's like naming a polar bear 'Midnight'." I was certain that the good judge would slap me upside my head, but he just softly chuckled and said, "My dear, never lose that special style of humor. I will admit I am getting used to it..." He paused for a few seconds, then adding at last, "And getting used to you."
** According to the director's of the Disney version of ''WesternAnimation/{{The Hunchback of Notre Dame|Disney}}'' Frollo's horse was nicknamed "Snowball" by the animators.
* ItsAllAboutMe: Danisha is this in spades.
* TheKilljoy: Malus when he comes to pick up his siblings even though they haven't had ice cream yet.
* ALittleSomethingWeCallRockAndRoll: Danisha introduces Frollo to Motown. [[ForegoneConclusion He loves it]].
* MamaBear: Danisha is supposed to come off this way to Quasimodo, but instead she comes off as a {{Yandere}}.
* ManChild: Quasimodo is portrayed as this.
--> I heard a sound from under the table. I pulled back the tablecloth and, to my surprise, stared directly into the eyes of Quasimodo. He was munching on cookies and drinking lemonade. "Quasi! What are doing here? You're going to get into trouble!" Quasi shushed me and whispered, "I heard about your party, and I wanted to come. Please don't tell my master." I thought for a few seconds, then decided not to tell Claude; after all, Quasi's my little buddy.
* ManipulativeBastard: Esmeralda is portrayed as this.
* MayDecemberRomance: Danisha and Frollo.
* MealTicket: Danisha and Frollo's romance can come across as this. Danisha owns a lot of luxuries that a rural schoolteacher would never be able to buy on her own, and her family isn't particularly wealthy. It's implied that a lot of her belongings are expensive gifts from Frollo. He even offers to buy her a very large house at one point, and in the sequel, he gifts her an ancient box that once belonged to a sixth-century Byzantine empress.
* MeaningfulName: The villain's name is Malus, which is Latin for "bad."
--> Malus? Well, he's based on a kid that used to live in the 'hood - a real bad seed – I think he's in jail(!). Hence the name, "Malus"...that name came from the only Latin teacher in my building. Sort of fits..."Malus" means "bad".
* MisunderstoodLonerWithAHeartOfGold: The author portrays Frollo as this.
* NeverMyFault: Danisha. For example, she acts like it was Frollo's fault that their first impression ended with her yelling at him when she was the one who overreacted to an innocent mistake that he made (namely calling her a gypsy).
* NoHoldsBarredBeatdown: Danisha does this to Esmeralda.
* OffstageVillainy: Malus apparently physically abuses his siblings, though the closest the story ever gets to showing him being abusive is him wanting to take them home early from a party Danisha's having.
* OutOfCharacter: Frollo - an incredibly racist man who hates anyone with skin darker than his - falls madly in love with Danisha, a black woman. He also spends a great deal of time giggling and simpering when he's around her, and finds her tendency to speak her mind "most endearing". He also doesn't believe in witchcraft at all and has very modern and politically correct views on issues like racism and slavery.
--> Claude smiled as he immediately explained, "My love, kindly leave the superstitions to the common crowd. I'm not as close-minded as some would have you to believe."
** Of course, the author tries to justify this OOC-ness, with her made-up theory about the Disney's Frollo identity (see YMMV page for details).
** Quasimodo, meanwhile, goes from an intelligent (if uneducated) and reasonable young man to a ManChild who follows Danisha around like a pet.
** Esmeralda is characterized as a scheming seductress who gets off on manipulating men into falling for her and marrying people out of pity. ''Back to the Frollo's'' version of Esmeralda openly dislikes both Quasimodo and Phoebus, and doesn't seem at all concerned about marginalized people.
** In ''Back to the Frollo'' and many of its sequels, Phoebus is portrayed as a very dimwitted "dumb jock" type, though this is more of an InformedAttribute; characters constantly remark on how dull he is, but he never seems to do anything genuinely stupid.
* PimpedOutCar: Danisha's purple, time-traveling Chevy.
* PurpleProse: Often (and occasionally literally, considering [[ColorMotif what Danisha’s favorite color is]]) used when describing Danisha's outfits.
--> Maybe, just this once, I could believe that he was paying attention to my attire; I wore a silk shantung dress of deepest violet, very elegant and figure-enhancing.
* RandomEventsPlot: Granted it's a little more realistic example than most, but the "plot" mostly just consists of Danisha and Frollo having shenanigans, flashbacks, sexually suggestive scenes and time-travel, to the point that the ''intended'' plot (Malus rebelling against Frollo and Esmeralda getting arrested) feels at best like a subplot and at worst like an afterthought.
* ReallyGetsAround: Frollo. Danisha is his ''fourteenth'' mistress. He even has rabid fangirls pursuing him in the streets.
* SassyBlackWoman: Danisha fits this to a T.
--> I returned the smile and, feeling a little silly, replied in a mock-Southern, down-on-de-ole-plantation dialect, "Mornin', Min'ster Frollo, suh. Much 'bliged y'all kin stop by an' set a spell. I has some pow'ful tasty pecan cake in yonder. Y'all sho' is welcomed."
* ShoutOut: The title has only one word difference with the title of ''Franchise/BackToTheFuture''.
* SilverFox: Frollo, apparently.
* SupportingHarem: Frollo has over two dozen other mistresses aside from Danisha (even though very few of them are plot relevant).
* SuspiciouslySpecificDenial: Danisha's claims that she is a "healthy girl", without really needing to do so. Rather than making the audience believe her, it instead makes them believe that she's actually just fat and in denial about it.
* TheTease: Esmeralda.
* TimeTravelRomance: The entire plot.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Frollo adores Danisha's pecan pies, and pecans in general.
* UnholyMatrimony: Frollo and Danisha. Granted, the author didn't intend this, but this is ultimately what the pairing feels like.
* VillainBall: Esmeralda gets this pretty badly. She's characterized as a ManipulativeBastard, but most of the things she does are cruel and spiteful for no real reason, needlessly complicated, and high-effort, low-reward. None of her actions ever benefit her in any way, and she frequently inconveniences herself just for the sake of being mean. She entered a sham marriage that she kept up for weeks just to make Phoebus upset, befriended and abandoned Quasimodo for the sole purpose of pissing off Frollo, and overall constantly trades massive inconveniences for small rewards she doesn't even have a motivation for wanting. And, if that didn't seal the deal, she's also fond of yelling at people in public.
* VillainProtagonist: Danisha and Frollo, coinciding with the above. Again, not intentional, just how the two of them act.
* ViolentlyProtectiveGirlFriend: Danisha who threatens to, and does kick anyone's ass for what she perceives as even the slightest attack on Frollo. See the trope directly below.
* WhatTheHellHero: Danisha beats up Esmeralda for turning Frollo down, even though he tried to assault and rape her.
* WhereDoesHeGetAllThoseWonderfulToys: Danisha has a lot of outfits, jewelry, shoes, and other accessories that would cost way too much for her teacher salary to afford. This could be explained by having Frollo just paying for, or giving them to her, and there's at least one scene that implies that he does[[note]] At one point he makes a possibly joking offer to buy her a house in modern times. Don't ask how he intends to pay for it when he only has currency from the 14th century.[[/note]] and a few more lines that give the impression, but still, it's more than a little concerning to see a social studies teacher owning amethyst earrings, necklaces, and several pairs of designer shoes, and dresses.
* {{Yandere}}: Danisha borders on this when you mess with Frollo, Quasimodo, or anyone she cares about.
