The dichotomy between good and evil is a CentralTheme of the Franchise/HarryPotter franchise. Therefore, many characters on the side of good have mirroring counterparts on the side of evil.

----
!Franchise-wide
* Gellert Grindelwald is the dark reflection of Albus Dumbledore. The two were the most brilliant students of their respective schools, Durmstrang and Hogwarts (even if Grindelwald was expelled), and even befriended each other in their youth. Intellectual and magical equals, Grindelwald nearly succeeded in corrupting Dumbledore through manipulating the latter's romantic affections for him, until he attacked Dumbledore's younger brother Aberforth, the ensuing melee leading to the death of their younger sister Ariana. Years later, Grindelwald became the worst Dark Lord in history (or, at least he was until Voldemort showed up) in his pursuit of power, while Dumbledore became a symbol for the Light, and refused to accept any more power than that of a teacher (and later, Headmaster) for Hogwarts. [[spoiler:Not to mention their usage of the Elder Wand: Grindelwald used the wand as an instrument for murder and destruction, while Dumbledore, after winning the wand from Grindelwald, only kept the wand to ensure it would never be used for that purpose ever again, and had every intention of breaking the wand's power with his death]]. Both were aware of this dichotomy and Grindelwald feared Dumbledore because of it. The two directly oppose each other as the BigGood and BigBad of the Fantastic Beasts films.

* Harry himself has several dark counterparts.
** The young Tom Riddle, aka Voldemort, is noted to have had a very similar background to Harry. They both were orphaned half-bloods who grew up in Muggle homes with no knowledge of their magical abilities and considered Hogwarts their first true home. Their wands share a phoenix feather from Fawkes, and the pair have a psychic link and many of the same abilities thanks to . Parallels can also be drawn in their methods of cheating death. Voldemort survives through his six Horcruxes, which he created by murdering five people plus one more after his ill-fated attempt on Harry's life (and then he makes out of Nagini). Harry survives through his relationships with friends and relatives, six of whom are killed in the act of directly saving his life: James and Lily Potter, . Harry and Voldemort even act as the spoiler:seventh Horcrux/relationship for each other: Harry is Voldemort's unknown seventh Horcrux, and Voldemort unknowingly saves Harry's life by creating a blood bond between them during his resurrection in Goblet of Fire.
** Like Harry and Voldemort, Snape was another student who found his first home at Hogwarts. Harry even notes this in Deathly Hallows and refers to himself, Voldemort, and Snape as "the abandoned boys". However, while Harry defiantly declared that he would never go over to the dark side even at the age of 11, Snape had a fascination with the Dark Arts throughout his youth and eventually joined the Death Eaters. Half-Blood Prince drives the parallels home most clearly. [[spoiler:Harry and Snape, aka the titular Prince, have a lot of similarities which allow the Prince's textbook to become a sort of ToxicFriendInfluence on him. Before discovering that Snape is the Prince, Harry thinks of the Prince as a kindred spirit and even vainly hopes that it may have been his father or one of James's friends, not noticing how mean-spirited and dangerous some of the spells the Prince has invented actually are until he almost kills Malfoy with one.]]
** Draco Malfoy tries to be Harry's counterpart. They are the only son of a famous/infamous Wizard and Witch, Seeker for their respective Quidditch teams Slytherin (Draco) and Gryffindor (Harry) and are set up as rivals for the first five books. They both part of a trio of friends, but while Ron and Hermione are true friends who love and support Harry, Crabbe and Goyle are more like Malfoy's henchmen and there is no real affection between any of them. Both Harry and Draco are eager to prove their worth for their respective groups: Harry for the Order of the Phoenix and Draco for the Death Eaters. Even Malfoy's actor Tom Felton cheerfully Lampshades this, suggesting his character is trying to be "The Harry Potter of the Dark side"; however, the emphasis is on trying as, unfortunately for Draco, he can never match Harry in skill or popularity.
* Ron Weasley has two evil counterparts in Draco Malfoy and Peter Pettigrew.
** Ron and Malfoy are both members of old Pure-blood families and sons Ministry of Magic officials, Order of the Phoenix member Arthur Weasley and Death Eater Lucius Malfoy, respectively. Also, like Draco, Ron often feels jealous of Harry's fame and popularity. But while Ron man ups and becomes his own person, Malfoy's resentment only fuels his bitter, nasty, bullying personality.
** Ron and Pettigrew are/were both close friends to a Potter who is/was considered very popular and cool and are/were ignored otherwise. Both are more than a little jealous of this. Deathly Hallows implies that Ron, like Pettigrew, has a bit of a lust for power, namely his interest in the Elder Wand. However, unlike Pettigrew, Ron is truly loyal to Harry and never abandons his friends for power or protection, while Wormtail only latched on to James due to his popularity and would sell out his friends to curry favor with the next biggest bully for his own ends.
* Like Harry, Hermione Granger has counterparts in both her school rival and a more serious counterpart among the Death Eaters.
** Pansy Parkinson is Malfoy's closest female friend just as Hermione is to Harry. While Hermione is a bookish beauty who Harry truly respects and admires, Pansy is little more than an ugly AlphaBitch and a lovesick sycophant who fawns after Malfoy no matter how little he seems to care about her.
** Bellatrix Lestrange is Hermione's Death Eater counterpart. Hermione is as devoted to Harry just as Bellatrix is to Voldemort. Both are intelligent and powerful witches on the opposite ends of the good/evil divide; both are capable of and are shown willing to go to extremes for their purposes (Bellatrix tortured the Longbottoms into insanity to find Voldemort. Hermione bewitches a DA document so that it will semi-permanently facially disfigure anyone who signs it and later sells them out and blackmails Rita Skeeter to allow Harry to tell the truth about Voldemort's return).
* Peter Pettigrew to Neville Longbottom. In their early school days at least, both are seen as weak students who need help from their more powerful/competent trio of friends (Harry/Ron/Hermione and James/Sirius/Remus). While this trio is their closest friends, they are always portrayed as being slightly outside of it as well. Pettigrew was famous for having attempted to bring down one of Voldemort's greatest strengths, Sirius Black, whom he had actually set up as a frame job, while Neville actually did take one out in . Neville eventually learns to find his own strength and steps up to the level of his friends, while Pettigrew never tries to work through his weaknesses and remains looking for someone (be it James Sirius and Remus, Voldemort, the Weasleys or Harry) to protect him. Harry even imagines Pettigrew as an older version of Neville when imagining Pettigrew's supposed death.
* Fred and George are Good Counterparts to Crabbe and Goyle. Both pairs are the muscly beaters for their respective Quidditch teams. But of course, Fred and George are charming, funny, and loyal, while Crabbe and Goyle are brutish and unappealing and betray their friends. .

* The Death Eaters are the Evil Counterpart of the Order of the Phoenix itself. The Death Eaters are a bunch of bigoted Pure-blood supremacists who serve Voldemort due to a combination of fear and lust for power, while the Order are the heroic faction led by Dumbledore who fight together out of true loyalty and belief that it is the right thing to do. Their counterpart status is emphasised by the films, as the Death Eaters' form of apparition is shown as them flying into a location like a swirling black tornado, while the Order's system is shown to be visually identical, but coloured silver instead of black.
* Voldemort to Dumbledore, as the BigBad and BigGood of the series respectively. Both were the most brilliant students Hogwarts had ever seen, and in his youth, Dumbledore held similar, if relatively more benign, beliefs about wizard supremacy (mainly driven by his love for his friend, the future Dark Lord Gellert Grindelwald). Both showed a thirst for power through items that supposedly defeated death, namely the Deathly Hallows for Dumbledore and Horcruxes for Voldemort. However, while Dumbledore later regretted his youthful views and hubris in seeking the Hallows, Voldemort only committed himself more thoroughly to the pursuit of power and immortality. Dumbledore believes that love is the most powerful magic of all, while Voldemort is incapable of accepting love and sees it as a weakness.
* Voldemort is also this to . Both were troubled Slytherin students with a muggle father (who they hated) and witch mother, both showed a fascination with the Dark Arts in their youth, and both became Death Eaters, with becoming one of Voldemort's most trusted servants. While pulled a HeelFaceTurn out of love for , whom Voldemort murdered, and spent the rest of his life protecting Voldemort never loves anyone and spends his life trying to kill .
* Prior to the end of the First Wizarding War, Severus Snape to Sirius Black. Both had troubled upbringings, with Snape despising his father for being abusive while Sirius despised his entire family for being hateful pure-blood supremacists. Snape supports pure-blood supremacy despite himself being a half-blood, while Sirius rebels against his family and the Dark Arts, even becoming the first Black to ever be sorted into Gryffindor. Sirius was James Potter's best friend, while Snape was his arch-rival. They are even described as looking somewhat similar, both having long, messy black hair.
* Bellatrix Lestrange is another EvilCounterpart of Sirius Black. They grew up in the same environment, come from the same family, and have similar temperaments. They're both skilled magically, and they resemble each other physically. They're both very devoted to their respective sides and would do anything to protect those they care about.
* Peter Pettigrew to Severus Snape. Snape was a Slytherin who joined the Death Eaters, Pettigrew was a Gryffindor who joined the Order. Snape was rivals with James and Sirius, while Pettigrew was one of James's and Sirius's friends. Later in the war, both men switched sides and became TheMole for the other side but for different reasons: [[spoiler: Snape defected to the Order to (vainly) save Lily from Voldemort, while Pettigrew defected to the Death Eaters to save himself. Both ironically defy the qualities associated with their Hogwarts houses, as Snape proves himself to be a very brave man attempting to bring down Voldemort from within, while Pettigrew proves to be a coward who would sell out anyone to save his own skin]].
* The Malfoy family to the Weasley family, both in general and individually through their respective parents.
** Both are very old Pure-blood families, but the Malfoys are rich hateful bigots who despise Muggle-borns, while the Weasleys are a poor but kind and noble family who reject the prejudices of blood status.
** Lucius Malfoy to Arthur Weasley. Lucius is an authoritative father towards Draco and the most virulently anti-Muggle-born member of his family, while Arthur finds Muggles and their culture fascinating and is a lovable BumblingDad. They both hold high places in Dumbledore/Voldemort's inner circles. They are also both true family men at heart who truly care for their wife and offspring, with this being one of Arthur's best aspects and Lucius's sole redeeming feature.
** Narcissa Malfoy (née Black) to Molly Weasley (née Prewett). Both love their children and both come from well-known pureblooded wizard families. Molly is the warm, caring matriarch of one of the wizarding world's most prominent anti-Voldemort families, embraces people regardless of their blood, and she's the mother of Harry's closest friend Ron Weasley, acting as a surrogate mother to Harry. Narcissa is the cold, manipulative matriarch of one of the wizarding world's most prominent pureblood supremacist families and she's the mother of Harry's primary rival Draco Malfoy. While Molly believes in and fights for her side's cause, Narcissa ultimately defects, but in both cases, these choices they make stem from their love for their families.
* Bellatrix Lestrange to Molly Weasley. According to Rowling, that is why the two fight each other at the end of Deathly Hallows: Molly is the embodiment of motherly love while Bellatrix is a psychopathic sadist who loves nobody (besides her obsession with Voldemort) and pretty much the opposite of everything Molly stands for. Love wins out.
* Fenrir Greyback to Remus Lupin. They're both werewolves (and Remus was bitten by Greyback as a child); however, Fenrir goes after and attacks people, particularly children, while Remus tries his hardest to avoid hurting anyone in his werewolf form.
* Literature/HarryPotterAndTheOrderOfThePhoenix: Dolores Umbridge to Minerva [=McGonagall=]. Both are strict teachers, but [=McGonagall=] is fair and well-meaning whereas Umbridge, is an outright SadistTeacher. [=McGonagall=] is Dumbledore's NumberTwo at Hogwarts, while Umbridge is Cornelius Fudge's agent attempting to undermine Dumbledore. Both are associated with cats, with [=McGonagall=] taking the form of a friendly cat as an Animagus, while Umbridge's office is covered in slightly creepy pictures of cats that make her seem like a CrazyCatLady. Both also cast a cat Patronus. [=McGonagall=] acts as something of a mother figure to Harry despite her strict exterior, while Umbridge presents a friendly, motherly persona but is rotten to the core and despises and tortures Harry.

* Petunia Dursley to Lily Potter. Lily is Harry's mother, whose love for him has protected him his whole life, while Petunia is his aunt and essentially his adoptive mother, who hates and abuses him. The pair were once pretty close sisters pulled apart by the Magical world. Lily is one of the least flawed and most loving individuals in the Wizarding World, while Petunia is a much more hateful person in her Muggle life, .
* Andromeda Tonks (née Black) is the good counterpart to her sisters Narcissa and Bellatrix. While Narcissa and Bellatrix hate Muggle-borns with a passion and married Pure-bloods, Andromeda married a Muggle-born man and was promptly disowned by her racist family for it.
* As for animals, Crookshanks is Mrs. Norris's good counterpart. Both cats are smarter than an ordinary cat and devoted to their owners, but whilst Mrs. Norris is nasty and uses her intelligence to snitch on students, Crookshanks uses it to spot enemies, even detecting a Death Eater in disguise.
* Literature/HarryPotterAndTheDeathlyHallows: The Deathly Hallows are the Good Counterpart of Voldemort's Horcruxes. Both are magical artifacts of extraordinary power associated with the idea of cheating death. The Hallows are ultimately united by Harry, who uses them to defeat Voldemort and his Horcruxes. While Horcruxes require their creator to commit murder in order to make them, the Hallows do not require such violence, and in fact the Elder Wand can be won by simply disarming the previous owner. While Voldemort uses his Horcruxes in a desperate grab for immortality, as he is terrified of death, Harry uses the Hallows to "master" death only in the sense that he accepts death as inevitable and natural, and .

* Gellert Grindelwald to Newt Scamander. Both of them are gifted wizards who were kicked out of their respective schools (Durmstrang and Hogwarts) for experiments gone wrong, but Newt actually took the blame for something that was the fault of his crush, Leta Lestrange, while Gellert was just being inhumane. Both wizards traveled the world to further their WideEyedIdealist views, but while Newt is a pacifist beast lover, Grindelwald is a xenophobic murdering terrorist who only wants dark magic creatures to conquer the muggles and set himself up as an EvilOverlord. Both have a strong connection with Dumbledore, but Grindelwald is his former lover turned bitter enemy, while Newt is Dumbledore's fiercely loyal protégé. In The Crimes of Grindelwald, Grindlewald, like Newt, uses a magical creature (Chupacabra) to aid his escape; however, Grindlewald throws the Chupacabra to its death when it gets too clingy, an action that would be abhorrent to Newt. Expanded lore adds even more with the data books revealing that Newt in WW1 was actually helping the Ministry who use Dragons for warfare (like Grindelwald with the Obscurus), but the plan ultimately failed. Newt, likely due to this experience, is disgusted at the idea of magic creatures being used by Wizards; while Grindelwald, on the other hand, glorifies Obscurus for their destructive power, despite the fact that Obscurus are parasites that kill innocent and abused children like Credence Barebone. Newt does his best to protect and help Credence, while Grindelwald does everything in his power to use Credence for his owns tyrannical ends.
* Jacob Kowalski is a Good Counterpart to Vernon Dursley. Both are unmistakably Muggles, both men are portly, possess impressive mustaches, and work in the industry. But while Uncle Vernon is petty, cruel, and vindictive, hating anything magic out of sheer spite, Jacob is awe-struck and delighted by the magical world Newt shows him to the point where Jacob wishes he was a wizard as well. He tragically has to return to the Muggle worldby having his memory wiped (though he gets it back later) in order to protect the magical world, while Vernon conversely did everything in his power to avoid the magical world.
* Credence Barebone to Ariana Dumbledore. Both are young troubled and trapped vulnerable children that have experienced horrific abuse because of their magic, causing both children to lash out at people and become Obscurials due to suppressing their magic, with Ariana accidentally killing her mother and Credence outright murdering his adoptive mother and sister. However, according to Aberforth, Ariana was a sweet scared girl beneath her condition; while Credence, unlike Ariana, is able to control his destructive powers but admits to Grindelwald he "doesn't want to".
!Theatre

* Albus Potter (Harry's son) and Delphi . Both have their lives altered by their parents and feel the ramifications of their father(s)'s actions both good and bad. Albus finds it hard to connect emotionally to his hero-father (thanks to being put in Slytherin) so he distances himself from Harry to his cost, while Delphi was desperate to meet and join him but ironically betrayed her father's legacy by , something that is alien to him.
