Alchemist Jacket Panic is a fanfic idea by Tropers/LelouchZero that has been more or less in DevelopmentHell since mid-2006. While the name may hint at a simple X Meets Y Meets Z crossover (in this case, Anime/FullmetalAlchemist2003 + Film/FullMetalJacket + Literature/FullMetalPanic, with all the implications that would follow), it was initially planned as much, MUCH more than that. Later revisions to the idea have seen entire series have their roles reduced significantly or outright removed, while other series have been added to the mess.

The intial story prompt was basically an Film/ApocalypseNow ripoff with Roy Mustang and his unit (plus characters from VideoGame/FinalFantasyVII, Anime/SCryed, and VideoGame/TalesOfSymphonia for some unfathomable reason [S-Cry-Ed got to stay because Alters are somewhat similar to alchemy; both [=FFVII=] and [=ToS=] have been axed completely]) going to the jungles of Cambodia to track down the traitor King Bradley and his team of rogue alchemists and Alter users, who are collaborating with renegade Soviet Colonel Volgin on a secret project that has the potential to shift the balance of power in favor of the North Vietnamese. Unfortunately for Volgin and his buddies, they need a certain piece of Black Technology to transform their MilitaryMashupMachine from an AwesomeButImpractical GlassCannon to a true superweapon capable of bringing those damned UsefulNotes/YanksWithTanks and their South Vietnamese lapdogs to their knees. However, this particular section of the story has been more or less shelved in order to focus exclusively on...

...our good friend Kaname Chidori, who just so happens to share the same city (and in most cases, the same school) with Literature/HaruhiSuzumiya, Lelouch Lamperouge, Tamaki Suoh, Tohru Honda, Negi Springfield, Ichigo Kurosaki, Saber, Saya Otonashi, Shana, Mio Akiyama, Madoka Kaname, Minato Arisato, Souji Seta, Kotonoha Katsura, Hayate Ayasaki, Yuri Nakamura, Taiga Aisaka, Misuzu Kamio, Ayu Tsukimiya, Nagisa Furukawa, Haruka Nogizaka, Sena Kashiwazaki, and perhaps the casts of just about every other school-based anime, manga, and video game in existence. (Lots of CanonDefilement was needed to shoehorn everybody in, by the way.) Kaname is still a Whispered, which means that she's a highly valued commodity to various parties (the American and Japanese governments, the KGB, and Colonel Volgin, to name a few). Which means everyone's favorite child soldier, Sousuke Sagara, has been assigned to protect her.

One more thing: The year is 2006, Vietnam is still divided into North and South, Korea is united, the Soviet Union and the Cold War are still going strong, Canada and Mexico are part of the United States, and Chinese democracy is not just a Guns N Roses album.

While the backstory and the basic plot have all been hashed out to some degree or another, actual writing of a finalized version has yet to commence on a significant scale, hence why it's here in the Unpublished Works section. Much of this page is essentially playing "spot the trope" with existing production documents and rough drafts. Spoilers abound, but whatever; this fic most likely won't be published in this troper's lifetime anyway.

Maybe a character page should be split off from here.

----
!!Tropes that probably would have been found here:

%%* ActionGirl: Most women who pick up guns here would definitely qualify.
%%** DarkActionGirl: Yuri Nakamura.
* AdultsAreUseless: You wish. Most adults, like Villetta, Melissa, and Ryotaro, are definitely useful.
%%* AlternateHistory
* AlternateUniverseFic, CrackFic, MegaCrossover: All the justification needed, really.
** HighSchoolAU: It's basically come down to just this.
* AntiVillain: Tamaki Suoh, Tohru Honda, Hayate Ayasaki, and Yuri Nakamura, to name three.
* ArmchairMilitary: Shinji Kazama and Lelouch Lamperouge, to name a few, start out as this.
%%* ArtifactTitle
* AssholeVictim: Shinji Matoh, Taisuke Sawanaga, and especially Youichi Hiruma and Kyoya Ohtori.
* TheAtoner: Tamaki Suoh and Tohru Honda towards the end.
* AwesomeButImpractical: The Siegfried. Hell, any Knightmare Frame or Arm Slave would qualify.
* AxCrazy: Taiga Aisaka and Kotonoha Katsura.
* BadassArmy: The U.S. Army, obviously. Australia, Japan, unified Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, South Vietnam, and Thailand all get their due as well. The NVA is a villainous example, at least among those sections that still maintain some measure of discipline (see SociopathicSoldier).
* BadassCrew: Heroic examples include the SOS Brigade, Hokago Tea Time, the Puellae Magi, the Neighbors Club, and Lelouch and Souji's respective groups. The SSS are a villainous example.
* BadassFamily: The Dojimas might count, even if Souji's just Ryotaro's nephew and Nanako is decidedly not an ActionGirl. The Nogizakas are a villainous example.
* BattleCouple: Quite a few, actually. Kyon, Lelouch, Negi, Souji, Tomoya, Yuichi, Makoto, and Kodaka, with their harems.
%%* BewareTheNiceOnes: Kotonoha Katsura. Even Tohru Honda gets in on the act.
* BFG: Chad's Minigun and Yuki Nagato's Barrett M82.
* BigDamnHeroes: Everyone gets a turn, though it's the U.S.-led coalition forces who get the biggest moment of all.
* BigFancyHouse: The Sanzen'in estate; too bad Lelouch and Sousuke burn it to the ground. Tsumugi also has a pretty nice vacation house in the Philippines.
%%* BitchInSheepsClothing: Nagi, Sena, and Yozora.
%%* BlackBox: Black Technology.
* BlingBlingBang: The Browning Hi-Power tends to get this treatment, with Mami, Milly, Tsumugi, and Tamaki all sporting really blinged-out pistols. Lelouch's M1911 and Milly's M14 also warrant mention.
%%* BreakTheCutie: See WarIsHell.
%%* BunnyEarsLawyer: Too many to name.
%%* CanonDefilement: Name of the game.
%%* CharacterDerailment: Oh, so very much.
* ChildSoldiers: Another main premise of this work. Sousuke's probably the only one who isn't just plain tragic, though.
* ColdSniper: Mana Tatsumiya, Uryu Ishida, Homura Akemi, and Lelouch Lamperouge. Naoto Shirogane as well, to a degree. Yuki Nagato later becomes the epitome of one.
* CombatPragmatist: Sousuke. Other protagonists like Lelouch, Souji, and Ichigo also aren't the type to let something like "fighting fair" get in their way.
* ConMenHateGuns: Tamaki and Kyoya in particular find handguns distasteful, though they're still willing to use them if necessary.
* CoolPlane:
** A cancelled sidestory would have focused on Kira Yamato testing a stolen Sukhoi Su-47 against North Vietnamese fighters of all sorts once the war goes hot again. Also, for some reason, Rei Ayanami was leading a [=USAF=] F-22 Raptor squadron, and Renton Thurston and Eureka were assigned to an F-15E Strike Eagle unit.
* CrazyPrepared: Sousuke Sagara, Mahoro Ando, Wilhelmina Carmel, Lelouch Lamperouge, Sayoko Shinozaki, and Villetta Nu. It's almost as if they were expecting the North Vietnamese to attack.
* CrazySurvivalist: Sousuke Sagara, again.
* CuteBruiser: Yuki Nagato, Ryoko Asakura, Ku Fei, Evangeline [=McDowell=], Shana...
* Demonization, Flanderization: Rule of thumb: If they're from Manga/OuranHighSchoolHostClub, Manga/FruitsBasket, Manga/HayateTheCombatButler, Anime/AngelBeats, or Literature/Toradora, they'll be prone to this.
%%* DesignatedGirlFight
* Determinator: Sousuke Sagara, Hayate Ayasaki, Ichigo Kurosaki, and Shirou Emiya, to name a few.
%%* DevelopmentHell: Oh, so very much.
%%* DirtyCommunists: North Vietnam.
* DoWithHimAsYouWill: The final fate of Shinji Matoh and Taisuke Sawanaga.
* DressingAsTheEnemy: Done by both sides, with mixed results.
* DrivenToVillainy: Quite a few of LesCollaborateurs (Tamaki Suoh, Tohru Honda, Hayate Ayasaki, Yuri Nakamura) were forced into collaborating.
%%* EnsignNewbie: Surprisingly enough, Sousuke.
%%* EvilDiva: Surprisingly, not Diva.
%%* FireForgedFriends
* FiringOneHanded: The way many of the students wield their pistols. Yuki Nagato and Shana also do this with P90s, while Rivalz Cardemonde does it with an Ingram MAC-10; Yuki and Shana do a much better job at it than Rivalz.
* FriendlySniper: Kurz Weber. Itsuki Koizumi, Minato Arisato, Souji Seta, Mio Akiyama, Madoka Kaname, and Milly Ashford later become friendly snipers as well.
* GadgeteerGenius, ScienceHero: Chao Lingshen, Satomi Hakase, Nina Einstein, and Rika Shiguma.
* GatlingGood: Chad Sado is the only one strong enough to actually carry a (modified) Minigun.
%%* GenderIsNoObject: The U.S. Armed Forces.
%%* GeniusBruiser: Ichigo Kurosaki and Chad Sado.
%%* GirlsWithGuns
* GoodGunsBadGuns: Inverted with the Steyr AUG, a "good" gun all the way through; the UsefulNotes/AussiesWithArtillery and some UsefulNotes/FillipinosWithFirearms use it, as do Ryoko Asakura, Saya Otonashi, Negi Springfield, Shirley Fenette, and Tsumugi Kotobuki (among others). (Seriously, it fucking pisses off this troper to no end that the AUG is almost always a "bad" gun.) The SIG-Sauer P226 (some with stainless slides) and FN P90 are also strictly "good" guns.
** Played around with the Beretta 92FS and the M16 family (traditional "good" guns), used by both protagonists and antagonists alike. The protagonists also aren't averse towards picking up thoroughly "bad" guns like [=AKMs=] and Makarovs to supplement their own considerable firepower.
%%* GuileHero: Kyon, Souji, Tomoya, and Lelouch.
%%* GunFu: Sousuke, Hayate, Sayoko, Wilhelmina, and Mahoro.
%%* GunPorn: But of course.
* GunsAkimbo: Very common. For starters, Yosuke Hanamura (dual SIG-Sauer P226s), Archer (dual Colt M1911s), Haruhi Suzumiya and Ichigo Kurosaki (Desert Eagle + SIG-Sauer P220), Yui Hirasawa (Glock 18 + P226), Ritsu Tainaka (Desert Eagle + Colt M1911), Hikaru and Kaoru Hitachiin (Tokarev TT-33 + CZ 52), Mitsukuni Haninozuka (Glock 19 + Makarov PM), Takashi Morinozuka (Glock 18 + Stechkin APS), Shiina (dual Makarov [=PMs=] or dual Stechkin [=APSs=], and T.K. (Colt M1911 + Browning Hi-Power).
** The P220 + P226 combination is particularly popular, with Homura Akemi, Souji Seta, and Mio Akiyama using both guns at one point or another.
%%* TheGunslinger
%%* Handguns: See GoodGunsBadGuns.
* HandCannon: Haruhi Suzumiya, Asuna Kagurazaka, Ichigo Kurosaki, Ritsu Tainaka, and Rivalz Cardemonde all use Desert Eagles as their sidearms.
%%* HeroicSacrifice: Mahoro Ando.
%%* HighSchoolHustler: Haruhi, Lelouch, and the members of the Host Club.
%%* HolidayInCambodia: Obvious, given the setting.
%%* HonorBeforeReason
* HumongousMecha: Both Arm Slaves and Knightmare Frames get their due here.
* ICallItVera: Yui Hirasawa is particularly prone to this; for instance, her Glock 18 and SIG-Sauer P226 are nicknamed "Glocky" and "Siggy," respectively. Mio Akiyama's Heckler & Koch [=HK417=] is named "Elizabeth," just like her Fender Jazz Bass.
* ImmuneToBullets: The Chiropterans lose much of theirs; that was one of the things in Anime/BloodPlus that annoyed the hell out of this troper.
** The Chiropterans are still immune to most pistol rounds and highly resistant to PDW and small-caliber rifle rounds, to the point where it requires an entire 30-round magazine from an M16 to take one down. 7.62x51mm NATO, 7.62x54mmR, and .338 Lapua Magnum are the bare minimum needed to really harm a Chiropteran, while anything larger like .408 Chey-Tac or .50 BMG will easily take care of one with one or two headshots.
* ImprobableAge: Sousuke Sagara, Negi Springfield, and Maria Takayama, obviously.
* ImprobableAimingSkills: Sousuke and Hayate have mastered these.
%%* ImprovisedWeapon: Sousuke loves these.
%%** NailEm, WrenchWhack: Don't let Sousuke Sagara or Yosuke Hanamura near a toolbox if you value your life.
%%* IOweYouMyLife, MyMasterRightOrWrong: Why Hayate Ayasaki knowingly serves a questionable mistress.
%%* IndyPloy: Haruhi Suzumiya's specialty.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Haruhi Suzumiya and Evangeline [=McDowell=], among others.
* Jerkass: Kyoya Ohtori, the Hitachiin twins, Yozora Mikazuki, Taiga Aisaka, et cetera, et cetera...
* JustAKid: Sousuke spends much of his time trying to reverse this perception of him.
%%* KickChick: Chie Satonaka, of course.
%%* KudzuPlot: Fell prey to this in early revisions.
* SugarAndIcePersonality, Tsundere, Yandere: These three members of the "dere" family all show up among the student body.
** SugarAndIcePersonality: Yuki Nagato, Kanade Tachibana.
** Tsundere: Tons upon tons upon TONS of these things.
** Yandere: Kotonoha Katsura and Sekai Saionji, to name two.
* LaResistance: Sousuke, Haruhi, Lelouch, and several others end up leading such a movement against the North Vietnamese.
* LadyOfWar: Mahoro Ando, Wilhelmina Carmel, and Sayoko Shinozaki.
* LesCollaborateurs: The Host Club, the Sohma family and its associates, Nagi Sanzen'in and her associates, Gentou Nogizaka and his mercs, Yuri Nakamura and the SSS, and Ryuuji Takasu and his circle of friends. Many of them didn't have a choice, though.
%%* LittleMissBadass: Too many to name.
%%* LockAndLoadMontage
%%* LoveDodecahedron: Several, actually.
* MadScientist: Lloyd Asplund, Rakshata Chawla, and just about anyone else involved with Arm Slave and/or Knightmare Frame development (with the sole exception of Cécile Croomy). Nina Einstein, Satomi Hakase, Chao Lingshen, and Rika Shiguma are well on their way there.
* MagicAIsMagicA, MinovskyPhysics: Traditional alchemy operates according to a set of well-defined rules. Alter powers operate on the same framework, though certain aspects tend to violate the rules of traditional alchemy.
* TheMagicVersusTechnologyWar, Magitek: Magic and technology now fight side-by-side, and the combination of the two can yield some truly wondrous things.
%%* TheManBehindTheMan: Kyoya is this to Tamaki.
%%* MechaExpansionPack
%%* MilitaryBrat: Sousuke Sagara and Souji Seta.
%%* MisfitMobilizationMoment: When the NVA finally comes calling to Hue...
%%* MoreDakka: LaResistance just can't get enough. See also GatlingGood.
%%* MostCommonSuperpower
%%* MotiveDecay: Probably would have happened somewhere down the line.
* NeverBringAKnifeToAGunFight: Why Saber and Shana eventually toss their swords in favor of rifles and [=PDWs=]. Subverted with Saya, who keeps her katana for situations when her Steyr AUG doesn't suffice.
* NinjaMaid: Sayoko Shinozaki, of course! Mahoro Ando and Wilhelmina Carmel also get a few moments of their own.
* NonuniformUniform: Helmets, bulletproof vests, and utility belts all make great accessories.
* NotSoHarmlessVillain: Who would have thought the NVA could be routed by a bunch of high school students?
* OccupiersOutOfOurCountry: Technically, occupiers out of our high school, but whatever.
%%* PaintTheTownRed
%%* PayEvilUntoEvil
%%* PinkMist
* PluckyGirl: Haruhi Suzumiya, the members of Hokago Tea Time, Souji Seta's harem, and Madoka Kaname, almost to a fault. Tohru Honda is an anti-villanous variant.
* PrivateMilitaryContractors: South Vietnam is a veritable playground for mercs of all sorts.
* TheQuietOne: Sousuke, Chad, Naoto, Homura, Kanade, and Yuki Nagato.
* TheQuisling: Those among LesCollaborateurs who went over willingly, like Kyoya, Nagi, and (to some extent) Yuri, are this.
* RecklessGunUsage: Happens quite a lot, seeing as only a few members of the resistance have any actual training with guns. Haruhi Suzumiya, Tsuruya, Yui Hirasawa, and Ritsu Tainaka are particularly guilty.
* Recycled IN VIETNAM
* RedemptionEqualsDeath: Haruhi Fujioka, Hayate Ayasaki, a quarter of the Sohma family, and a good fraction of the SSS.
%%* TheRemnant: The Viet Cong.
%%* ReportingNames
* RichBitch: Nagi Sanzen'in, Akito Sohma, and Sena Kashiwazaki. Kyoya Ohtori, the Hitachiin twins, and Mitsukuni Haninozuka qualify as rich bastards.
* TheRival: Yuri Nakamura to Haruhi Suzumiya, Hayate Ayasaki to Sousuke Sagara, and Kyoya Ohtori to Lelouch Lamperouge.
%%* RuleOfCool
* SemperFi: Sousuke, Kurz, and Melissa are U.S. Marines instead of mercenaries in this continuity.
* ShellShockedVeteran: What do you suppose happens many of the resistance members who manage to live through the whole thing?
* ShotgunsAreJustBetter: Tsuruya's Pancor Jackhammer. Kanji Tatsumi, Mami Tomoe, and a few of the UsefulNotes/YanksWithTanks and Koreans With Marines use the Daewoo USAS-12. Some minor protagonists, like Taniguchi, Rivalz Cardemonde, and Keigo Asano, use pump-action pieces like the Mossberg 590 and Remington 870.
%%* SlidingScaleOfAlternateHistoryPlausibility: Type X-IV all the way.
%%* SmallGirlBigGun: Yuki Nagato + Barrett M82.
* SmugSnake: Kyoya Ohtori. Just Kyoya Ohtori. Shinji Matoh and Taisuke Sawanaga also qualify.
* SniperRifle: Numerous makes and models get their day in the limelight. In particular, Lelouch loves his Heckler & Koch MSG-90.
%%* SociallyAwkwardHero: Sousuke Sagara, naturally.
* SociopathicHero: Sousuke Sagara and Rolo Lamperouge, to a degree. Kotonoha Katsura is somewhere between this and AxCrazy. Yozora Mikazuki definitely qualifies.
* SociopathicSoldier: Akito Sohma's private enforcers, Gentou Nogizaka's mercenary company, and the mercenaries who work for the Ohtoris and Sanzen'ins, almost to a fault. Many of the VC and NVA regulars are also this.
* SpaceFillingEmpire: The United States in this continuity, which now encompasses everything from Greenland to Panama.
* TheSpartanWay: Just like how Sousuke trained the rugby team in the original Literature/FullMetalPanic.
%%* SpoiledBrat: Nagi, Mitsukuni, and Sena Kashiwazaki.
%%* TheStoic: Sousuke, Homura, Kanade, and Yuki Nagato, again.
%%* StormingTheCastle
%%* StuffBlowingUp
* SuperPrototype: The Siegfried, Lancelot Conquista, Guren Mk-II, Arbalest, Codarl, and Kyoshiro Tohdoh's Gekka.
* SwordAndGun: Saber (broadsword + Browning Hi-Power), Saya (katana + SIG-Sauer P220), and Shana (katana + FN P90 or Five-seveN).
%%* TakingYouWithMe: Kyoya utterly fails at this.
%%* TalkToTheFist
* TankGoodness: Mostly older stuff like [=M48A5=] Pattons, PT-76s, and upgraded T-55s. The [=M1A2=] Abrams, Type 90, and K1 88-Tank also get their fair share of exposure.
* TeensAreMonsters: Like you wouldn't believe.
* TookALevelInBadass: More like twenty levels for many of the resistance members who survived the ordeal, though clearly at great cost; see ShellShockedVeteran.
* TrainingFromHell: Sousuke lives by this in athletics, and it works! Defeating Ryoma Echizen and helping his football team utterly crush the 21}} Deimon Devil Bats are just two of his accomplishments.
%%* TrueCompanions
* UniversalAdaptorCast: Some ensembles lend themselves more to this than others.
* UnwantedHarem: Played straight with Negi, and averted with Kyon, Minato, Souji, Lelouch, Tomoya, Yuichi, Makoto, and Kodaka.
%%* UrbanWarfare
%%* WaifFu: See CuteBruiser, LittleMissBadass.
%%* WallOfWeapons: In a school, of all places. See CrazyPrepared.
%%* WarIsHell: But of course.
* WeHelpTheHelpless: The SOS Brigade. The Host Club and SSS also aspire to this, as flawed as their members are.
* WouldNotShootACivilian: Some of the mercenaries and the less disciplined elements of the NVA would.
%%* YoungGun
%%* ZergRush: The NVA's favored strategy for getting across the DMZ in the first place. Negi's homeroom class tries the same against the NVA, with surprisingly good results.
