Matthew Christopher Miller (born June 29, 1982), better known by his stage name Matthew Mercer, is an American voice actor. Born in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, he started off providing background voices in anime dubbing in the early 2000s. He eventually found more prominence in Japanese video game dubs and some western animation voice roles, though around 2012/2013, he eventually started gaining more prominent roles in anime voiceover work. In 2010, he directed and starred in the live-action web original series WebVideo/ThereWillBeBrawl, which also featured friends and other voice actors such as Creator/KyleHebert.

Alongside There Will Be Brawl, Matthew is known for voicing Chrom in VideoGame/FireEmblemAwakening, Levi in Manga/AttackOnTitan, Jotaro Kujo in Manga/JoJosBizarreAdventure and Ganondorf in VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaTearsOfTheKingdom.

However, his most well-known current role is working as the DM for WebVideo/CriticalRole, where he and other nerdy ass voice actors sit around and play TabletopGame/DungeonsAndDragons. This has become so successful, he also was called on to DM the Podcast/Podcast campaign WebVideo/ForceGrey: Giant Hunters. Oh, and he was also DM for a game featuring LetsPlay/Pewdiepie and [=CinnamonToastKen=]. Plus, he got to DM a one-shot for Creator/VinDiesel in a Critical Role spin-off to promote Film/TheLastWitchHunter. And then on August 6, 2016, Matt got to announce that his custom campaign setting was being made into a book that contained information on how to run games in his custom setting. In case you hadn't figured it out, he really likes D&D (if you're wondering, his personal favorite character that he likes to play is a Dwarf Bard). For Red Nose Day 2019, he fulfilled a long-term goal of his by being Dungeon Master for Creator/StephenColbert, in a one-on-one session with content voted on by fans through donations.

On October 24, 2016, he got engaged to Creator/MarishaRay, and they were wed on October 21, 2017.

----
!!Tropes associated with Matthew Mercer at High Noon...:
* AlliterativeName: Matthew Mercer. Also applies to his real name, Matthew Miller, though not so much if you count his middle name.
* BaritoneOfStrength: A lot of his roles have really deep voices and have a lot of combat prowess. He is, however, capable of readjusting his voice for younger characters (for example, Shigure, Spyro and Yusuke).
* TheCameo: He has one in the WebVideo/ManAtArms episode where the Sword of Omens is forged, and gets to try it out. He also has a cameo as a bard in ComicBook/RatQueens and as The Hound in the Series/GameOfThrones parody WebVideo/SchoolOfThrones.
* ChronicBackstabbingDisorder: Some of his roles fall under this such as [[spoiler:Lao and Alvin.]]
* CreatorBacklash:
** He stated during an interview that he's grown tired of being TheOtherDarrin for many of Creator/TroyBaker's old roles, leading him to turn down the opportunity to replace him as Yuri Lowell in VideoGame/TalesOfVesperia: Definitive Edition.
** He’s not fond of WesternAnimation/LeoTheLion.
* DeadpanSnarker: A lot of his characters can be sarcastic. Chrom, Chamber, Alvin, and Levi are particuarly notable examples.
* HeAlsoDid: Alongside his more well-known voice acting and dungeon mastering roles, Mercer also produced web series such as WebVideo/ThereWillBeBrawl, WebVideo/SchoolOfThrones, and Muzzled: The Musical.
* Jerkass: He himself has admitted he voices a lot of smarmy douchebags, though they often fall more along the JerkWithAHeartOfGold side of things such as Levi.
* LargeHam: He doesn't get to be melodramatic very often, but when he does, he busts out the ham like it's going outta style. Sinbad, Aikuro, Leorio, and the male playable Norn character are some of the best examples.
* ManOfAThousandVoices: Boasts an impressive range. In cases of substitution, he's capable of sounding exactly like Creator/TroyBaker and even Creator/RogerCraigSmith (which makes it extra funny when they get together as three of the four main protagonists of VideoGame/ResidentEvil6).
** WebVideo/CriticalRole really gives him a ton of chances to show off. As the main campaign's Dungeon Master, he has to voice nearly all of the [=NPCs=]. Said NPC voices number in the hundreds, ranging from the sort of characters he usually voices to things far outside his usual roles like CampGay Gilmore and CreepyAwesome Clarota. This includes a whole bunch of female characters, and he generally does a very good job of making the [=NPCs=] all sound unique Compare Kima, Allura, Sherri, Ripley and Delilah, for example. He also provides all of the sound effects, monster noises, and so on. The players - professional voice actors themselves - all praise Mercer's range during the episode 10 Q&A.invoked
*** This has also carried over into WesternAnimation/TheLegendOfVoxMachina: even with other voice actors taking over for many of the major NPC[=s=], Matt voices a wide array of background characters, in addition to providing Trinket's animal sounds and the voices of the ArcVillain[=s=] of Seasons 1 and 2, Sylas Briarwood and Umbrasyl.
** Also demonstrated in WebVideo/ThereWillBeBrawl: in addition to being the live actor for Ganondorf, he provides the voices of Meta Knight and Kirby.
** In the Heirs of Fate [=DLC=] for VideoGame/FireEmblemFates, he gets a chance to show off his singing skills (he, as Shigure, sings both the final battle theme and the credits song), and they're just as impressive as his acting.
* NiceGuy: Apart from the good-hearted jerks and deep-voiced tough guys he's provided his vocals for, he's also known for voicing kind-hearted characters, such as Chrom, Shigure, Leorio, and Sinbad.
* TheOtherDarrin: Due to Troy Baker's union status, high demand of Troy's motion capture work in video games, and similar vocal ranges, Matthew took over most of Troy Baker's previous anime and non-union Japanese video game roles.
* PlayingAgainstType:
** He has the tendency to play sarcastic or serious badasses. In VideoGame/Persona5, he voices Yusuke Kitagawa: a badass swordsman, except Yusuke is also a soft spoken Cloudcuckoolander artist. It's definitely a bit more out there.
** In Film/Mythica he's the recurring EvilIsHammy villain. No, really.
** In WesternAnimation/WabbitALooneyTunesProduction, he plays Bigfoot, probably the biggest departure from characters he is used to. Bigfoot is a LethallyStupid GentleGiant.
* PromotedFanboy:
** He's been playing Dungeons and Dragons for literal decades, and his campaign setting of Exandria (popularised by Critical Role) is now, as of March 2020, an officially published product set in the D&D canon multiverse. It's a feat that few others can boast; the last such occurrence of an independent setting becoming official canon was in 2004, namely Keith Baker's TabletopGame/Eberron.
** As both a big fan of the VideoGame/BaldursGate series, and of fellow voice actor Jim Cummings, Matt considered it a pristine honour to be taking up the role of Minsc in VideoGame/BaldursGateIII, which Matt has stated is his favourite of Cummings' voice roles.
** He's a huge fan of the Legend of Zelda series, and once played as Ganondorf in WebVideo/ThereWillBeBrawl. Nearly a decade and a half later, he got to officially voice Ganondorf for real in VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaTearsOfTheKingdom.
* TrollingCreator: He's admitted that when he plays VideoGame/Overwatch, in which he voices Cassidy, he will mess with his teammates by drawling, "It's high noon...", inducing panic among them. Even when the enemy team doesn't have a Cassidy. That phrase telegraphs Cassidy's ultimate, Deadeye, which is a OneHitKill. When you hear it, you run for your life.
* Typecasting:
** He's unquestionably the go-to guy for serious and/or sarcastic badasses with deep voices. Bonus points if they're fairly young (a lot of his characters are either teenagers or young men in their twenties) and have troubled pasts.
** He also often casted into several roles that were once voiced by Creator/TroyBaker.
** Sometimes cast as roles with Southwestern accents (EG Overwatch, Cyberpunk Edgerunners). Incidentally, Baker's actually from Texas. Mercer's from Florida, but moved to California from age 8.
