She's notable for being one of the youngest actresses ever nominated for Best Actress at the Academy Awards (for her role as Paikea Apirana in ''Whale Rider''), being just thirteen at the time (she was in fact the ''youngest'' until Quvenzhané Wallis was nominated for ''Film/BeastsOfTheSouthernWild'' at the age of nine).

!!Tropes associated with the creator and her works:
* CareerResurrection: Obara Sand in ''Game of Thrones'' was one of her first high-profile roles in years; although Obara wasn't exactly a fan-favorite it still brought Castle-Hughes back to wider attention and she went on to have a starring role in ''FBI: Most Wanted'' since 2020.
* FakeAmerican: As Hana Gibson in ''FBI''.
* LifeImitatesArt: In ''The Nativity Story'', Mary is around sixteen/seventeen years old when she becomes pregnant. During filming, Castle-Hughes herself became pregnant with her first child at sixteen.
* StarDerailingRole: Her role as Mary in ''The Nativity Story'' unfortunately put the brakes on her career, due the film's mixed reception and commercial failure. The fact she got pregnant at sixteen while making the film didn't help – while she was over the legal age of consent in New Zealand, in many parts of the United States she was considered underage, which made studios reluctant to hire her to avoid controversy from MoralGuardians. However, she has since managed to find steady work over the years in both film and television. Despite Obara and the other Sand Snakes not being popular characters amongst the fanbase, Castle-Hughes' supporting role in ''Game of Thrones'' seems to have given her career a significant boost; she went on to be cast as a series regular on ''FBI: Most Wanted'' and voiced Emerie Karr in ''The Bad Batch''.
* StarMakingRole: Her role as Pai in ''Whale Rider''; it was her film debut and her performance was widely praised, earning her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress at the age of just thirteen. While filmwise she hasn't starred in anything as successful as ''Whale Rider'' since, she had a recurring role in ''Game of Thrones'' and has become a prime-time regular on ''FBI: Most Wanted'', so there's a pretty good chance the average viewer will still recognize her face and/or name.
* YouLookFamiliar: She's played two different characters in ''Star Wars''; in 2005 she had a small role as Queen Apailana in ''Revenge of the Sith''. Eighteen years later in 2023, she voiced Emerie Karr in ''The Bad Batch''
