Bungie is an American video game development house most famous for its creation of the enormously successful ''{{Franchise/Halo}}'' franchise and its loving relationship with its fans. [[MultipleChoicePast Opinions are divided on how the company got its name]], with some saying that [[NoodleIncident "Bungie" is the punchline to a dirty joke]], while WordOfGod states that it just sounds "[[RuleOfFun fun]]."

In addition to ''Halo'', Bungie was also well known as one of the more successful Platform/{{Macintosh}} game developers, which made their selling out to Microsoft to provide a launch title for the Platform/XBox an announcement of substantial proportions.

Bungie is also unique in the gaming studio world in that it has a close relationship with its fanbase, due in large part to its ambitious bungie.net online multiplayer system. Many of its employees are {{Promoted Fanboy}}s, and many players may encounter a Bungie employee while playing online. Their workplace overall is known to be pretty relaxed, with little need for suits and a fondness for ToiletHumor.

Despite the very deep storylines of Bungie's games, and those games' overall quality, ''{{Franchise/Halo}}'' has gained the reputation for being fit only for twelve-year-olds and fratboys, [[ItsPopularNowItSucks partially because of Halo's popularity]], partly the hype that Bungie games accumulate before launch, and partly because many players [[PlayTheGameSkipTheStory don't bother with the plot at all]].

After ''Halo 3''[='s=] release, Bungie announced that it would do two more [[GaidenGame Gaiden games]] before splitting off from Microsoft and leaving the ''Halo'' franchise to the newly formed Creator/ThreeFourThreeIndustries, a company primarily composed of former Bungie employees.

In April 2010, Bungie announced that they would be entering a publishing deal with Creator/{{Activision}}, who would gain the exclusive rights to publish all games in Bungie's new IP ''VideoGame/{{Destiny}}'' for the next 10 years. [[http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/11/28/destiny-story-details-concept-art-leaked Catch a first look of it here]].

In early 2019, over creative differences toward the handling of the ''Destiny'' IP, Bungie split from Activision, taking out Destiny from Activision Blizzard's [=Battle.Net=] into Steam, and subsequently, making the base game and two Year 1 content of the second Destiny game free-to-play.

In 2021, Bungie continued to assert itself as a player in the Games Industry with shifting focus to new IP and getting new people on the Board of Directors including the Creator/ViacomCBS CEO.

In January 2022, it was announced that Bungie was acquired by Creator/SonyInteractiveEntertainment in a deal worth $3.6 billion. The acquisition sees Bungie becoming a subsidiary of [=SIE=] separate but related to its [=PlayStation=] Studios label, with Bungie remaining an autonomous, multiplatform developer and publisher under Sony. Sony will help Bungie with its growth ambitions and extending the ''Destiny'' property outside of video games, while Bungie's expertise in multiplayer and live-service games will support Sony's own ambitions with creating such content. On July 15, 2022, the acquisition of Bungie was completed, making Sony's ownership of them official.

In May 2023, in addition to their continued work on the ''Destiny'' series, Bungie and Sony [[https://blog.playstation.com/2023/05/24/bungie-unveils-marathon/ announced]] a revival of ''Marathon'', reimagined as a [=PvP=] extraction shooter.

Ling Ling's head is stored in a fridge/cabinet marked "Warning, Ling Ling inside.")[[/note]]
