Jaco accidentally used an Extinction Bomb which wiped out a planet and only got scolded for it. If that isn't bad enough, you have Gods of Destruction from other universes, who are all notoriously violent, that can come and blow up your planet without warning because they're looking for something, or you may have the bad luck of running into a [[spoiler: rogue Supreme Kai]] who've decided that [[KillAllHumans all mortals should die]] for the [[UtopiaJustifiesTheMeans good of universe]] and slowly wipe out your population. On top of all that, you have Zen'o, [[TopGod who is the supreme ruler of the multiverse]], who can wipe out the entire universe on a whim and has done so in the past. The Earth is only peaceful because almost all of the strongest warriors in the universe happens to live there, they have a ResetButton in the Dragon Balls, and they have gained favor with the gods thank to Goku making friends with King Kai, the Supreme Kais, Beerus, and even Zen'o, along with having great food. Even then, humanity was terrorized by Cell, all but wiped out by Majin Buu, and was conquered by King Piccolo decades earlier. [[spoiler: Frieza also successfully blows up the planet and it's only revived because Whis rewind time]]. [[CrapsackWorld Future Trunks' timeline]] shows exactly what will happen to the Earth if it lost its fighters, especially Goku, and the Dragon Balls. |

Things fall apart beyond that; the remaining 20% are "Quirkless" -- normal humans -- and are looked down upon by those with Quirks and are even denied the chance to be heroes themselves legally because they just wouldn't be able to "keep up". Even if you have powers, there's a chance that the powers you have just wouldn't work in a "heroic" setting and are equally looked down on for having "bad" powers. Not helping matters is the fact that many blatantly favor flashy Quirks than simpler Quirks. Even more so, many active heroes aren't there to make the world a better place, but instead are in it for the wealth and fame, ignoring social woes. It's no wonder those like Hero Killer Stain and [[spoiler:Shigaraki]] wanted to destroy the current world order. |

Trained assassins are raised from childhood in villages run by other trained assassins and are hired out to anyone with enough money. The good guys are apathetic at best, the bad guys are all incredibly powerful, not only capable of but more than willing to kill anyone who looks at them funny for no reason other than because they can. The governments and agencies that are supposed to deal with this sort of thing are largely self-absorbed and not likely to put any real effort into pursuing anyone who tries to defect from their village (which seems to happen quite a lot), which is just as well because no one whose job it is to get rid of rogue ninjas is capable of defeating 14-year-olds, much less city destroying badasses. Finally, before the start of the series, said ninja villages were constantly embroiled in various wars against each other ([[CivilWar and themselves]]), with several major world wars and they always picked unaffiliated countries to stage their wars in, meaning lots of innocent people are caught in the crossfire. After the series starts, you've got villains who instigate a war because of their own cynicism, villains who are willing to destroy cities just to prove a point, villain who experiment on children, villains who subjugate the souls of the dead and force them to fight against their loved ones, and the BigBad willing to plunge the entire world in LotusEaterMachine because [[TheLostLenore the girl he was in love with died]] and he willed to create a world in which this did not happen while TheManBehindTheMan has [[AGodAmI a god complex]] and a ''very'' twisted idea of peace after living a life of war where he lost every single one of the ''four'' brothers he loved. Most importantly, there is FantasticRacism against the people who house the 9 most powerful beings in the world, who are "demonic" in the first place because of people treating them as nothing more than sources of power and as destruction-seeking monsters. The titular character lives his early life with this. |

Once ''they'' came into the picture, one can honestly say the World Government is evil. They blatantly disregard the law, shooting people who even ''slightly'' irritate them, parading their slaves around without batting an eyelash, when slavery was supposedly abolished ''two hundred years ago'', and giving no other excuse for their actions than simply having the blood of the "creators" of the world, which supposedly makes them divine by nature. The sad part is that they are completely outside the law, meaning their actions cannot be punished, and worse yet, attacking them is considered to be a crime of the worst sort -- enough that if they so desire, they can send an ''[[TheDreaded admiral]]'' after you. |

Sorcerers, the beings best suited to fighting off said Nemeses, are persecuted against a lot by the general population, with even children not exempt from being killed at the stake. Then there's the Inquisition, who ruthlessly hunt down Sorcerers at the smallest misbehavior and spread oppressive lies about said Sorcerers that contribute to their discrimination. |
| 58 | * The setting of ''Literature/TheSaintsMagicPowerIsOmnipotent'' is Salutania, a rich, prosperous medieval fantasy kingdom with happy residents, a benovelent king, and no shortage of incredibly friendly handsome men and beautiful women who openly welcome the protagonist, Sei Takanashi, a woman taken there from modern earth as part of a botched "Saint Summoning" ritual. Said ritual was meant to save Salutania against the monster-producing misama and outside the highly secure royal capital where Sei lives for a year, industries and provinces are crumbling from the unrelenting pressure of monster raids, safe zones are steadily growing smaller and smaller, and even basic necessities like medical supplies are increasingly hard to produce in the numbers they need to try and survive another day, not to mention the ongoing politics where it's every noble and faction begging to be saved over the other! It need also be mentioned that that "Saint Summoning" was only meant to be used ''once'', but the situation is so dire the current government decided the potentially catastrophic consequences of trying and failing were worse than not doing it. |

Then at the very end of the first chapter/episode, we learn that [[spoiler: things only appear so sweet because we were seeing things through Yuki's eyes, who had [[ThroughTheEyesOfMadness a breakdown before the series started and has became delusional.]] In reality, the series is about the girls being holed up in school because of a ''[[ZombieApocalypse zombie outbreak]]'', while playing along with Yuki's delusions for her sake.]] |

The capital city of Teito is a prospering metropolis TwentyMinutesIntoTheFuture, benefiting greatly from the heavy investments of [[MegaCorp MBI]] and generally a fantastic place to live. Some lucky residents even get to meet one of the 108 {{Magical Girlfriend}}s just waiting to form an everlasting bond with them. Expect tons of {{Fanservice}} and harem comedy. The downside is that ThereCanBeOnlyOne and participation is ''not'' optional, with anyone that attempts to escape being hunted down by the [[PsychoForHire Discipline Squad]]. Over time, the [[LawEnforcementInc private military]] owned by MBI takes over the capital and enforces increasing levels of martial law to force the Sekirei to kill one another. Oh, and that amazing MagicalGirlfriend? She's a RedShirt and you're BlessedWithSuck. Minato, the hero of the series, is determined to ScrewDestiny because the idea that only ''one'' person gets a happy ending is unacceptable to him. |

Then you remember that the story started when a noble arbitrarily decided to force a commoner to become his concubine and her reaction implied something like this was anything but uncommon. Several lines also imply that slavery is not only practiced but abundant. Then there is the fact that in Tanbarun commoners are banding together in a paramilitary force of outlaws called The Loins of the Mountain to protect themselves from criminals because they don't trust the government. |
| 63 | * ''Anime/SoundOfTheSky'' takes place for the most part, in a lush, incredibly beautiful mountain village where people live fairly happy lives. As the series goes on however this is revealed to be one of the few places still like this, with most of the world being rendered uninhabitable due to a past war that was so devastating that it apparently killed off all life in the oceans and humanity technologically regressed to early twentieth century. To make things worse, the handful of major nations left are fighting for what remains and that shrinks every year as the remaining habitable land is undergoing irreversible desertification. Nobody seems shocked at all to have teenage girls enlisting in the army. |
| 64 | * ''Anime/SuperDimensionFortressMacross'' has shades of this in the city inside the titular starship. Macross City is almost idyllic, with shops, stadiums, a thriving cultural life, and perfect weather. However it's situated on a massive warship that is desperately fighting its way home against literal billion-to-one-odds after the whole shebang was accidentally transported to the orbit of Pluto. And then, when they get back to Earth, the unwitting passengers are told they're stuck there, as the government of Earth has arbitrarily declared them all officially dead to try and cover up the very existence of the Zentradi from the rest of the world's population, then bans the ship and everyone on it from Earth after an accident takes out Toronto. And then, they end up the last survivors of the Human race, as the Zentradi glass the planet to stop the cultural contamination of their race from Earth media. And that's just the TV series... in [[Anime/MacrossDoYouRememberLove the movie]], there is no longer a ''home'' to go back to, as the Zentradi ''already'' glassed Earth shortly after the Macross made its fateful spacefold. |

The world has endured WWIII thanks to these powers some ten odd years ago, the only reason this stopped was because the nine most powerful of these [Talent] users signed a pact that split up the world into 9 equal pieces called [Site], leaving the nations in their territories intact only as a courtesy for form over substance. Children as young as first year of high-school, ''and younger'' are constantly under threat of being drafted into the military, if not simply grabbed right off the street to be sold to shady individuals for anything but wholesome reasons. Even the protagonist ''was flat out lied to'' about the nature of his [Talent] to try and keep him BeneathNotice, ''and that failed!'' |
