!!Julie Richman
-->played by: Creator/DeborahForeman

Julie is a beautiful and popular Valley Girl who has grown tired of dating her long-time boyfriend, JerkJock Tommy. She meets Hollywood punk Randy at a party and is smitten with how different and passionate he is. She later struggles with choosing between Randy and Tommy; choosing the former will cost her her friends, but choosing the latter will cost her her heart.
----
* ChastityCouple: When Loryn mentions "totally gnarly sex" in the context of Julie's relationship with Randy, Julie remarks that they hadn't gotten than far. In fact, the closest that Julie and Randy were shown in any sexual-type interaction was the two of them making out at the beach in swimsuits.
* LoveAtFirstSight: More or less. She and Randy first see each other at the beach at a distance. Though neither makes overtures to the other, it's obvious that they're attracted to each other. When, at Suzi's party, Julie sees a completely smitten Randy shyly smiling at her, she smiles back and waits for him to make the first move.
* DaddysGirl: Appears to love her parents equally, but goes to her dad for advice.
* MsFanservice: A much milder example than the rest of the Fanservice in the movie, but she is seen in a bikini at the beach and has a couple of scenes where she is just in her underwear.
* OppositesAttract: She's a sweet, popular Valley Girl who falls for a foul-mouthed, free-spirited punk from Hollywood.
* WackyParentSeriousChild: When she comes home the next day after spending all night with Randy, she is so confused by her parents' laid back reaction that she practically asks them to punish her like Stacey's parents would have.

!!Loryn
-->played by Creator/EGDaily

Loryn is a friend of Julie's who has a somewhat wild reputation among boys. She almost cheats with Julie's boyfriend Tommy and later struggles with the guilt.
----
* EthicalSlut: Loryn has an active sex life but also is reluctant to respond to Tommy's come-ons until he assures her that 1) he isn't drunk and 2) he and Julie broke up.
* FriendToAllChildren: She is very friendly with Suzi's BrattyHalfPint little sister Peggy and engages with her while dancing at the sleepover and defends her to an exasperated Suzi.
* MsFanservice: Gets a topless scene, swimsuit scene, and her prom dress stands out from the others for having a very deep-V corset top.
* RaceLift: Loryn is African-American in the 2020 JukeboxMusical remake.
* ReallyGetsAround: It's implied, though not really shown, that she's done a lot with guys.

!!Stacey
-->played by: Creator/HeidiHolicker

Julie's best friend, who pressures her to drop Randy and go back to Tommy, though interestingly, she herself seemed conflicted about Randy's dorky friend Fred.
----
* AlphaBitch: She has shades of this. She's not a bully, but harshly judges Randy for the "crime" of not being from the Valley and is very dismissive of Julie's love for him.
* BetaCouple: Averted with Fred. She seemed to not be completely averse to his flirting while Julie and Randy made out in the car, and he was gleeful to see her sitting alone at the prom, but they are not otherwise presented as an actual couple.
* MissingMom: When Fred tries to start a conversation with "So how's your mother?", she bluntly replies, "She's dead," and walks away.
* NotSoAboveItAll: For all her loud protesting at being dragged into Hollywood, she seems to have covertly enjoyed Fred's attention towards her. Stacey also seems interested in some (although not all) of the Hollywood sights before Randy pulls over the car in a part of town that intimidates her.

!!Suzi Brent
-->played by: Creator/MichelleMeyrink

Julie's friend who is interested in classmate and delivery boy, Skip, who is more into Suzi's stepmom, Beth.
----
* BettyAndVeronica: She is the Betty to Beth's Veronica and Skip's Archie.
* MsFanservice: She is seen in a swimsuit, in a braless tank and underwear, in the shower, and in a steamy sex scene.

!! Tommy
-->played by: Creator/MichaelBowen

Julie's long-time boyfriend and BigManOnCampus. Julie breaks up with him very early in the film, citing boredom and the lack of mental stimulation. Tommy later reconciles with her after she is pressured to dump Randy for him. Tommy and Julie go to the junior prom together, only for her to again choose Randy over him, seemingly for good.
----
* BigManOnCampus: The most popular guy in school and widely lusted after by his female classmates.
* BrainlessBeauty: Tommy is implied to be a male version of the trope.
--> Julie: He's got the bod, but his brains are bad news.
* EntitledToHaveYou: He is not pleased when he sees Julie try (and fail) to start up a conversation with Brad at Suzi's party, and later roughs up Randy and throws him out of the house after he interrupts Randy's conversation with Julie.
* Jerkass: He tries to make Julie jealous at Suzi's party, tries to hook up with Loryn but tells her that she's the jerk for "leading him on" when she balks, beats up and throws Randy out of Suzi's house for the crimes of not being from the Valley and talking to Julie, has an overinflated sense of self-worth and entitlement, and that's just for starters.
* ManipulativeBastard: Tommy is jealous of Julie and Randy from the first time he sees them being happy together. He tells Julie's friends what a shame it is that she barely has any time to spend with them anymore and is missing opportunities to participate in things like student government. He isn't too convincing, befitting his downplayed-BrainlessBeauty status, and Stacey and Loryn initially seem to see through him, though her own prejudices and insecurities cause Stacey to adopt his position as time goes by.

* RealMenWearPink: Tommy is a jock who wears a pink prom tuxedo.

!! Skip
-->played by: Creator/DavidEnsor

A valley dude who both Suzi and Beth are interested in.
----
* BettyAndVeronica: He is the Archie to Suzi's Betty and Beth's Veronica.
* LikesOlderWomen: Is apparently more attracted to Beth than Suzi. He admits that there's a reason why he is the one delivering groceries when he finds Beth in her backyard; he doesn't specifically say what the reason is, but it can be inferred that he was hoping to get some alone time with Beth.

!!Steve Richman
-->played by: Creator/FredericForrest

Julie's dad.
----
* Good Dad: Julie turns to him when she is troubled, and he kindly talks with her and gives her wise advice.
* Hippie Dad: Owns and runs a health food store, wears "water buffalo" sandals, and smokes pot.
* HappilyMarried: To Sarah.
* WackyParentSeriousChild: When Julie comes home the next morning after spending all night out with Randy, she fully expects to be punished, but Steve tries to comfort her instead.

!!Sarah Richman
-->played by: Creator/ColleenCamp

Julie's mom.
----
* HappilyMarried: To Steve.
* Hippie Mom: Does yoga and worries about doing things that may cause bad karma.
* WackyParentSeriousChild: When Julie comes home the next morning after spending all night out with Randy, she fully expects to be punished, but Sarah tries to comfort her instead.

!!Beth Brent
-->played by: Creator/LeePurcell

Suzi's mother.
----
* AntagonisticOffspring: Suzi. Beth tells Lyle that Suzi has grown competitive with her ever since the death of Suzi's father, Jim.
* BettyAndVeronica: The Veronica to Suzi's Betty and Skip's Archie.
* MrsRobinson / StacysMom: Skip first catches her attention at Suzi's party, and when they actually meet, she insists that he call her by her first name and gives him a flirty smile. Later, she lampshades the MrsRobinson trope when Skip, delivering groceries to the house, admits that his presence is no accident.

!!Randy
-->played by: Creator/NicolasCage

A Hollywood punk who falls hard in love with Julie.
----
* FishOutOfWater: Very much this when he and Fred crash the party at Suzi's house, and when he drops in on the Richmans' health food store.
* LoveAtFirstSight: More or less. He and Julie first see each other at the beach at a distance. Though neither makes overtures to the other, it's obvious that they're attracted to each other. When Randy just happens to crash Suzi's party and sees Julie in attendance, he is completely smitten.
* OppositesAttract: He's a potty-mouthed, free-spirited Hollywood punk who falls in love with a sweet and popular girl from the Valley.
* RageBreakingPoint: Randy gets very mad about how Tommy kicked him out of the party while he was flirting with Julie. After a few minutes of reflection, he goes on a rant about it, turns Fred's car around, and goes back there.
* SirSwearsALot: And how! Nearly all of the profanity in the film comes from his mouth.
* StalkingIsLove: A more wholesome variety; he breaks into Suzi's house in hopes of getting to catch up with Julie and convince her to leave the party with him. Later on, he shows up unannounced at the Richmans' health food store. After Julie reluctantly breaks up with him, he flits about the Valley, taking up part-time jobs where she and her friends hang out, just to get to see her. Julie seems secretly happy to see him, but when she catches him sleeping on the front lawn outside her window, she is understandably spooked.

!!Fred Bailey
-->played by: Creator/CameronDye

Randy's dorky best friend and Sidekick.
----
* AbhorrentAdmirer: For Stacey. It seems at first that he is pursuing Stacey merely because Julie brought her along for the trip to Hollywood, but he practically squeed when he spotted Stacey at the junior prom, indicating that he did actually become attracted to her. When he is reunited with Stacey during the food fight at the prom, she cries in anguish at the sight of him.
* UndyingLoyalty: He is unfailingly at Randy's side, save for the times when Randy and Julie are together.
** The penultimate example is when he saves Randy from getting into a fight with a car full of gang members after his post-breakup drunken bender; before any contact is made, Fred bum rushes Randy to safety and though he is upset that his best friend is crying over "some Valley chick," he refuses to leave Randy's side and exhorts him to fight for Julie.
** Later on, after Randy's attempts to fight for Julie fail to yield the desired results, Fred devises the plan to reunite Randy with Julie and "achieve the grandest form of retribution against the guy who kicked (Randy's) ass."

!!Samantha
-->played by: Creator/TinaTheberge

Randy's ex-girlfriend.
----
* DoYouWantToCopulate: When she sees Randy at the club, she goes to him and immediately starts feeling him up. When he acknowledges her and doesn't push her away, she continues to caress and kiss him before leading him to the bathroom.
* MsFanservice: Her breasts are exposed during her make-out session with Randy.
