Not helping things is the fact that he is by far the most qualified candidate, being a former politician (which actually caused him to despise politics). [[spoiler:He becomes the runner-up and almost becomes mayor when Stan is disqualified for his criminal record, only to be disqualified himself (much to his relief) due to failing to file the appropriate paperwork]].
52	* GuiltComplex: A massive one. He nearly committed suicide after the Tower of Heaven, before Mystogan stopped. He hates himself so much that the reason why he didn't try to get Mabel to like him is because he felt undeserving of Erza's love and wanted to be punished somehow (ironically, this admission is why Mabel finally accepts their relationship). In fact, the biggest reason why Jellal finally took the plunge and asked Erza out was because he realized that pushing her away was hurting her as well, and he hates the idea of hurting her more than he wants to punish himself.
