[[folder:Guilder]]
!!Horace Guilder

Originally the Deputy Director of Special Weapons in charge of Project Noah, Guilder was dying of Lou Gehrig's Disease when the outbreak occurred. By [[spoiler:abducting Grey,]] he was able to prolong his life and the lives of a few select others. Over the next 100 years, he gradually emerges as the dictator of a large society called 'Homeland' which he rules with an iron fist.
----
* TheAgeless: Due to a diet of Grey's blood, Guilder becomes a sort of semi-'familar' much like Jude Cripp. As a result, he doesn't age for almost 100 years.
* AxCrazy: Ends up as this due to his VillainousBreakdown, when he begins executing people left and right for spurious reasons.
* BadBoss: Even his longest and closest friends aren't safe from him if he's caught in a bad mood. He executes [[spoiler:Fred Wilkes, his most competent and loyal comrade, for basically no reason. Even he comes to regret it.]]
* BigBad: Of ''The Twelve''.
* BigBadDuumvirate: With the Twelve Master Virals.
* CharacterDeath: [[spoiler:After Lila kills herself along with Grey, the effects of Grey's blood come to a halt. Guilder begins ageing rapidly and is then torn to pieces by the Twelve.]]
* CharacterDevelopment: But not for the better. Guilder goes from a well-intentioned (if weak and self-serving) man desperate for love and approval to a monstrous tyrant responsible for thousands of deaths.
* GreaterScopeVillain: He's responsible for [[spoiler:the disappearance of the Colony and was a HiddenVillain during ''The Passage''.]]
* LesCollaborateurs: With the Virals; he even plans a longer partnership.
* {{Determinator}}: You have to hand it to Guilder: When he wants something, absolutely nothing will stand in his way. Even a helicopter crash which kills his men, injures him and strands him in a post-apocalyptic wasteland with hungry monsters rushing about doesn't stop him from creating an entire society/dictatorship.
* DyingAlone: His greatest fear [[spoiler:and ultimate fate.]]
* EvilIsPetty: Guilder becomes increasingly petty and just plain obnoxious as his sanity slips.
* EvilOverlord: Of the Homeland.
* FreudianExcuse: He led a friendless, loveless life and worked tirelessly to gain the approval of his cold father, who never acknowledged any of his many achievements. He then saw his father ravaged by illness, and knew the same fate was in store for him.
* HiddenVillain: His existence is barely alluded to in ''The Passage'', but he [[spoiler:was responsible for the loss of the Colony and the deaths of most of the characters inside it.]]
* HumiliationConga: Guilder's whole life was one of these, from getting ignored by his father to falling in love with a prostitute who didn't even like him.
* IJustWantToBeLoved: He has no friends, never married, his parents were distant, and the most 'loving' relationship he ever had was with a prostitute. Guilder desperately wants some kind of acknowledgement and love, but is too crazy to ever get it.
* ImmortalitySeeker: His motivation for going ahead with Project Noah; he wanted to save himself from a long, painful death of Huntington's.
* JumpingOffTheSlipperySlope: His murder of [[spoiler:Masterson]] is something of a turning point; it's when he begins to truly do anything it takes to survive.
* KarmicDeath: [[spoiler:After the 'source' is destroyed by the woman he imprisoned, Guilder falls to pieces as his moment of seeming victory falls apart before his eyes.]]
* MercyKill: Does this to [[spoiler:his father.]]
* LargeHam: Becomes this as part of his SanitySlippage.
* LifeDrinker: He has to keep drinking Grey's blood, or he begins to rot.
* OlderThanTheyLook: He's over 100 years old, but stays looking like he's in his 40s/50s.
* SanitySlippage: He's practically a different person from who he was pre-apocalypse. He's paranoid, delusional, impulsive and violent.
* TheUnfettered: Following the TimeSkip, he's become this. He kills hundreds of people, tortures others and engages in numerous sadistic hobbies.
* VillainousBreakdown: His unnaturally long life has degraded his sanity, and the threat of Sergio has turned him into an angry, paranoid man.
* WellDoneSonGuy: He didn't have a good relationship with his father, who was never impressed or interested in Guilder's many impressive achievements.
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: His backstory is pretty tragic; all he wanted was not to die alone.
* ZeroPercentApprovalRating: Guilder is absolutely despised by everyone in the Homeland. Even his 'friends' like Suresh and Wilkes are scared of him.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Lila]]
!!Dr. Lila Kyle

An orthopedic surgeon and the ex-wife of Bradford Wolgast. After the outbreak, she has a psychotic break and labours under a complex delusion.
----
* AscendedExtra: She only really appears during a phone call in ''The Passage'', but in ''The Twelve'' she gets a great deal more pagetime and serves a crucial role.
* BrokenBird: Her infant daughter dies, her marriage falls apart, she sees her co-worker horribly killed and then [[spoiler:she has a miscarriage during the apocalypse.]]
* CharacterDeath: [[spoiler:She blows herself up along with Grey.]]
* CloudCuckooLander: Following her psychotic break.
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler:It's unclear how 'heroic' it was, but her decision to blow herself up along with Grey led to the destruction of the Homeland.]]
* HeelRealisation: She [[spoiler:eventually comes to realize what a monster she's become.]]
* HospitalHottie: Wolgast certainly thought so.
* OddFriendship: With [[spoiler:Grey.]]
* RedemptionEqualsDeath: [[spoiler:Lila comes to the realization that she's a monster, and decides to end the Homeland by blowing herself and Grey up.]]
* ReplacementGoldfish: She starts doing this in the Homeland with [[spoiler:a succession of children that Guilder gives her to keep her placated. She re-names them and uses them to feed her delusion until they reach a certain age, after which she loses interest and the child is subsequently replaced.]]
* SanitySlippage: [[spoiler:After a Viral attack, Lila's grasp on reality breaks and she spends the next 100 years in a state of delusion.]]
* TogetherInDeath: [[spoiler:She and Grey die together.]]
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: Lila goes through all kinds of pain, but she's ultimately [[spoiler:the real power of the Homeland and as Guilder's secret weapon, she's responsible for the deaths of thousands, among them her own ReplacementGoldfish children and staff.]]
