! The Knights of Saint Christopher

[[folder:In General]]
* ActionGirl: An offhanded line from Hamish reveals there were female Knights as early as the [=1800s=].
* CunningLinguist: The werewolves - and through them their champions - are capable of reading many languages such as Sumerian and Latin.
* BlackAndGrayMorality: The Knights are violent werewolves whose first reaction to most problems is to [[MurderIsTheBestSolution start killing people]] regardless of if they are magic users or innocent victims being used by magic, sometimes decide whether or not to kill people with beer pong, and some are perfectly willing to let an innocent child become a HumanSacrifice because it's the wrong child and would cause the (world-destroying) ritual to fail. However, they are up against The Hermetic Order of the Blue Rose who routinely abuse magic for their own gain, brainwash people to cover up their crimes, sacrifice non-magical people to perform spells or use them as experiments for untested magic, and manipulate politics and economies to fatten their own wallets.
* LegacyCharacter: "Champions die, the Knights are eternal." Each werewolf hide chooses a champion to bond with, making them a werewolf. When the champion dies, the pelt returns to a special box, to wait for a new champion to come along.
* LostCommonKnowledge: The current Knights don't know a whole lot about their order's history, goals, and methods, doing things (like eating hearts) just because it's "tradition." It isn't until Jack starts reading through the books in their "[[MagicalLibrary evidence locker]]" -- which includes journals of Knights going back to at least the [=1800s=] -- that they start learning ''why'' they do certain things, and what their ultimate goals and missions are beyond just killing anyone using bad magic. Come Season Two, they start to learn that the Knights are supposed to practice Order-style magic in addition to their werewolf powers, instead of shunning all magic as inherently evil.
* MadeOfIron: Werewolves (even in human form) are able to tank murder spells that fold, spindle, and mutilate human beings with ease, merely getting stunned or BlownAcrossTheRoom. Especially in Season Two, anyone who wants to incapacitate a werewolf temporarily will use what would be lethal magical force on a human, indicating that werewolves can NoSell spells that would be nonlethal against humans.
* MagicKnight: They're supposed to learn magic and use it supplement their werewolf powers in the pursuit of their mission, though the current iteration of the Knights has forgotten this. In fact, being a werewolf makes magic stronger. . . Alyssa uses ''apereatur'' to open a lock, Jack using the same spell destroys the lock. Alyssa's ''inflammare'' starts a large fire, Jack's is pure StuffBlowingUp.
* MySignificanceSenseIsTingling: Werewolves hear a loud ringing noise when magic is being performed, cluing them in that there's something happening they should probably go do something about.
* PartialTransformation: Werewolves can learn to manifest some wolf traits in human form. It starts as glowing eyes and fangs when they're having difficulty resisting a change, but with practice, they can form claws on their fingers while remaining otherwise human.
* SuperStrength: Part of the werewolf package, and usable in human form to boot.
* VoluntaryShapeshifting: With effort and focus, werewolves can learn to control their changes without much difficulty.

[[caption-width-right:350:]]
A freshman and recently a werewolf who is intent on taking down the order from the inside.
----
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: Picks up on tiny details and clues few others notice, giving him a big edge in unraveling the mysteries around him.
* BackFromTheDead: Is killed when he is seperated from Silverback to stop the ''Vade Maecum'' from killing him. However, after visiting the collective unconscious in the afterlife he comes back.
* BrokenAce: Jack's obsession with revenge pushed him to become an all-star student, talented athlete, and a shoo-in for wizard training. It takes him a few months in college to realize he has been enslaved by his angry, paranoid grandfather into becoming a ruthless assassin.
* ChildByRape: Jack was conceived when his mother, Chloe Morton, was placed under a love spell by Edward Coventry.
* EmbarrassingNickname: His nickname in Boys Scouts was "Pee-Pants."
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: His hair is dyed blonde in Season 2 to show that after having his memory erased by The Order, his identity has been redefined for him as their loyal follower.
* GeniusBruiser: He's got great academic achievement to get him the scholarship to Belgrave, and can definitely hold his own in a mundane fistfight. Adding werewolf powers and Order magic on top of this truly makes him a force to be reckoned with.
* HandOrObjectUnderwear: In "Free Radicals Part 1" Jack uses his hands to cover his crotch after he's caught naked.
* HeroicBSOD: After Pops' death, enters a rage-fueled one where he tries to deliberately stop caring about anyone and anything, because his actions only seem to get people killed. He snaps out of it just in time to help save the day.
* IndyPloy: Jack doesn't really do plans, he's more an "end goal" kind of guy. Vera straight-up asks if he has something against planning, to which Jack replies "I like to improvise."
* TheInfiltration: Jack infiltrates the Order.
* MagicKnight: The most well-rounded of the heroes in a fight being more than capable in a physical fight with his werewolf pelt(s) and capable in magic due to his Order training. Although, the others get much stronger in Season 2, when Lilith reawakens to her magical abilities and Hamish and Randall also join the Order and learn magic as well.
* TheMole: He infiltrates The Hermetic Order of the Blue Rose to help his grandfather and later the Knights of Saint Christopher take them down.
* NinjaPirateZombieRobot: A werewolf who learns the Order's HermeticMagic.
* RaisedByGrandparents: Jack was raised by his maternal grandfather Pete "Pops" Morton as his mom died from suicide as a result of being raped (which conceived him) while his birth father the rapist didn't know he existed.

!! Randall Carpio
--> '''Played by:''' Adam [=DiMarco=]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/randall_carpio.png]]
[[caption-width-right:350:]]
Jack's Residence Advisor and a very laid back guy.
----
* AccidentalTruth: So that Lilith and Hamish won't kill Jack, he lies to them that Professor Clarke was weaponized by bad magic and Jack killed him. Later turns out this is excatly what happened.
* AlwaysSaveTheGirl: Only sticks around for the Mad Science experiments because he wants to make sure Ruby is okay. The fact that she's the one who lured him there in the first place makes him ''snap completely''.
* AmbiguouslyBi: Refers to Gabrielle and Brandon as "Hot and Hotter" and when Jack asks Hamish if he's dating Lilith or Randall Hamish responds, "No and he wishes." In season two, Hamnish and Randall play the gay card to deflect suspicion from them having their memories back. That said, the only characters he's confirmed to have romantic or sexual interest in are Lilith and Gabrielle.
* AmnesiacLover: He and Lilith have TheBigDamnKiss in the Season One finale, but shortly afterwards their memories are erased and neither of them remember it.
* CantSpitItOut: Towards Lilith. He finally does near the end of the first season, though the Order's LaserGuidedAmnesia throws a wrench in this.
* JumpedAtTheCall: Says that Hamish approached him to become a werewolf with a speech about [[ComesGreatResponsibility power and responsibility.]] Randall was like "Are you talking about superpowers," Hamish was like "Maybe," Randall was like "Sign me up."
* ManIFeelLikeAWoman: Randall's very first act upon taking on Gabrielle's form with a glamor spell is to feel his breasts up in "The Commons Part 1".
* MellowFellow: Randall advises Jack against ''being caught'' breaking the residence rules. He also buys Jack a drink, despite Jack not being old enough to legally drink.
* MistakenForGay: Weaponised. He and Hamish dupe their Order handlers into giving them alone time by pretending they are in a relationship. Although, Randall clearly doesn't mind quite as much as Hamish.
* NervesOfSteel: Was chosen to be a werewolf because he saw someone trying to abduct a kid from a playground and rushed in to intervene. He was chosen by Greybeard, described as "The Fearless One." And he's pre-med, a profession which requires Nerves of Steel by default.
* TheNicknamer: Keeps giving embarrassing nicknames to Hamish (Hamster, Alexander Hame-ilton, etc.) who shoots them all down. Hamish also denies Randall calling Vera "Severe-a."
* OutOfCharacterIsSeriousBusiness: In ''Undeclared: Part Two'', he acts very paranoid and aggressive after escaping Hemmings laboratory because the saevbacch sigil is still influencing his aggression. In fact, it's a testament to Randall's role as the MellowFellow that he resisted it for so long.
* PluckyComicRelief: Whilst he has his serious moments his main role is to alleviate tension with jokes and good humour.
* PortmanteauCoupleName: InUniverse as his "Hamish and Vera shipping theories" increase.
-->'''Randall''': I call them 'Ver-mish.'
* ShipperOnDeck: Subverted. He's convinced Hamish and Vera have a thing in Season Two, and is not happy about it.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Lilith Bathory]]
!! Lilith Bathory
--> '''Played by:''' Creator/DeveryJacobs
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lilith_bathory.png]]
[[caption-width-right:350:]]
A bloodthirsty werewolf, and a former member of the Order.
----
* ActionGirl: As a werewolf this is a given, but she's also the most aggressive of the Knights.
* AmbiguouslyBrown: Lilith has olive skin, black hair and obviously is a woman of color. Her specific ethnicity though isn't stated. She's played by a Mohawk actress.
* AmnesiacLover: She and Randall have TheBigDamnKiss in the Season One finale, but both their memories are erased shortly afterwards. In Season Two, Lilith starts a relationship with Nicole.
* AmnesiacVillainJoinsTheHeroes:
** She used to be an Order member, but was expelled and subjected to their LaserGuidedAmnesia spell. Sometime later she joined the Knights of Saint Christopher. It's an interesting case as neither the Order and the Knights were all unaware of her previous/new loyalties as well until Alyssa is introduced to the Knights.
** Inverted in Season Two, when her memory is erased ''again'' and she is made to rejoin the order.
* BloodKnight: Nicknamed Killith by Jack, Lilith enjoys fighting and killing magicians and anyone who has been taken over by magic. The fact that she unironically loves the nickname emphasizes this.
* CameBackWrong: In a sense. After being sucked into Hell, she's finally pulled back through the efforts of Jack, Hamish, Randall, Nicole, and Gabrielle... and then she reveals that she was pulled from her true home, having been transformed into a demon.
* DeathSeeker: Has shades of this. She feels she ''needs'' the Knights, and doesn't know who she was before she became a Knight. "I gave my life to the cause. And what the fuck am I supposed to do if the cause won't take it?" "Keep living," Hamish replies. Lilith does not like that answer.
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: In Season 2, her hair is shorter and has blue highlights to show that after The Order erased her memories they redefined her identity so she'd become their loyal follower.
* HairTriggerTemper: Lilith is a fiery young woman who flies into rages over minor things easily.
* TheLadette: She drinks just as hard as the boys, loves brawling and makes almost as many dirty jokes as Randall.
* LegFocus: Since ShapeshiftingExcludesClothing, the Knights tend to lounge around in bathrobes after a patrol. Lilith's favored robe is black and silver, and short enough to show off her bare legs. When not in her robe, Lilith tends towards tight leather pants, or rarely shorts. The camera sometimes lingers on them.
* MeaningfulName: She's named for two different evil women-[[Myth/{{Lilith}} one]] was [[Literature/BookOfGenesis Adam]]'s twisted first wife who according to legend murdered children among other things, the latter Elizabeth Bathory, an actual {{serial killer}} who'd murdered young women to [[BloodBath bathe in their blood]] hoping it would [[FountainOfYouth keep her young]]. Unapologetically a BloodKnight, Lilith believes that MurderIsTheBestSolution and eventually becomes a literal demon.
* ModestyBedsheet: Once after waking up naked post-werewolf transformation in a room with Randall, Jack and Hamish, Lilith (who's initially behind a couch) covers herself quickly with a blanket. This is odd as before the werewolves showed NoNudityTaboo.
* MurderIsTheBestSolution: Her gut instinct when dealing with magic is to start killing people.
* NinjaPirateZombieRobot: Like Jack, she has access to Order magic on top of her werewolf abilities, though she only recalls her time in the Order, and thus her magical training, [[EleventhHourSuperpower late in the first season]].
* NoodleIncident: Why she was kicked out of the Order. She asks Alyssa, who basically tells her it's too soon, then decides she doesn't want to know. Shortly after that, the Knights figure out how to restore her memories, but she never mentions why she was kicked out even now that she presumably remembers it. Whatever it was however, was enough to make her [[TantrumThrowing throw a legendary tantrum.]]
* OneOfTheBoys: Lilith is TheLadette and she mostly hangs out with her male fellow werewolves, with much the same interests (she's actually the most aggressive of the bunch).
* PutOnABus: To Hell, midway through Season Two. She comes back in the final episode of the season. . . as a demon.
* QueerEstablishingMoment: Lilith is attracted to Randall in the first season and kisses him. The second season reveals she's attracted to Nicole. While at first it's left ambiguous if Nicole caused this by magical hypnotism, it's later confirmed not to be the case and Lilith has genuine feelings for her.
* TheSmurfettePrinciple: Lilith is the only woman in the Knights of St. Christopher.
* SoapboxSadie: Lilith is outspoken in objecting to things she finds sexist.
* TomatoInTheMirror: Out of the Knights of Saint Christopher she hates magic the most and actually takes pleasure in killing magic users. Then, in ''Undeclared: Part Two'', she learns from Alyssa that she used to be ''in'' The Order until she was expelled and had her memory erased.
* WalkingSpoiler: A lot about her is only revealed towards the end of the first season. Even to herself. Then there's her whole "I'm a fucking demon" thing at the end of Season Two.
* WeUsedToBeFriends: With Alyssa. When Lilith was in the Order, she and Alyssa were very close friends although Lilith was expelled and had her memories erased so doesn't remember it. When she's informed about it by Alyssa, Lilith is relatively chill about it (by Lilith standards) but when she regains those memories in ''Finals: Part One'' she [[TantrumThrowing throws a legendary tantrum]] over the betrayal.
-->'''Lilith:''' "We told each other everything! (Several seconds of incoherent screaming.) I told her everything! We braided each other's hair!"

[[folder:Hamish Duke]]
!! Hamish Duke
--> '''Played by:''' Thomas Elms
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hamish_duke.png]]
[[caption-width-right:350:]]
The leader of the Knights, and a Philosophy teaching assistant at Belgrave University.
----
* TheAlcoholic: [[InsistentTerminology Insists]] he's an "alcohol afficionado." Late in Season Two, he comes to believe he has an actual problem, and stops drinking. He still mixes a mean cocktail, though.
* TheLeader: In charge of the Knights. While he often has to remind them of that, he's not a ''bad'' leader by any means.
* TheLostLenore: Cassie, Timber's former champion, brought him into the Knights and had a relationship with him but is a PosthumousCharacter by the start of the series.
* MayDecemberRomance: He very obviously has the hots for Vera, which Randall relentlessly needles him about. Turns out that the feeling is mutual.
* MistakenForGay: Weaponised. Hamish and Randall dupe their Order handlers into giving them alone time by pretending to be in a relationship.
* SeriousBusiness: For him, it's cocktails. And beer pong. And mixing Marvel and DC.
* SharpDressedMan: Often the most well-dressed of the Knights, leaning towards fashionably retro suit and vest combos.
* TheSmartGuy: His werewolf, Tundra, is labelled the "most cunning" of the wolves.
* SupportingLeader: He's in charge of the Knights, but Jack is the protagonist.
* TeamDad: despite being fairly young, he's considered old for a werewolf, and leads the team.
[[/folder]]

!! Hides

[[folder:Alpha]]
!! Alpha
The strongest hide. Championed by Grafton Davis, and later by his daughter, Salvador Grant.
----
* TheBigGuy: Even by werewolf standards, his strength is immense.
* TheGhost: Isn't seen until Season 2 on account of being missing.
* TheLeader: Is literally called "Alpha" and its implied that he tends to bond to the leader of the Knights like Grafton Davis.
* NeverFoundTheBody: ''Literally''. Sometime in the fifties, Alpha, his Champion, and his locker went missing from the Knights. The current Knights weren't even aware there was a hide and locker missing until late in Season One, when they started pouring over the journals of previous Knights.
* TheSixthRanger: His hide and locker went missing and never returned to the Knights of Saint Christopher, leaving them with only four members at a time (with Midnight's champions being utilised as CannonFodder). His hide and locker are still missing (presumably, somewhere with the remnants of Praxis) at the end of Season Two.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Silverback]]
!! Silverback
The powerful hide. Championed by Jurgen Sawyer, and later by Jack Morton.
----
* HeartIsAnAwesomePower: Jack eventually picks him over Midnight because Silverback has the strength of a wolf but allows its champion more humanity and heart than Midnight.
* SealedEvilInACan: Silverback is a heroic werewolf but he has been locked away for 50 years since his last champion, Jurgen Sawyer, bonded with the incredibly evil TomeOfEldritchLore known as the ''Vade Maecum'' and imbued a piece of it into Silverback.
* SoulJar: When his champion, Jurgen Sawyer, became part of the ''Vade Maecum'' a piece of magic tome became imbued within Silverback.
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: ''Hates'' Midnight.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Tundra]]
!! Tundra
The cunning hide. Championed by Hamish Duke.
----
* GeniusBruiser: Whilst he might be the "cunning" one, he's still a werewolf.
* TheSmartGuy: Referred to as the "most cunning" amongst the werewolf hides.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Greybeard]]
!! Greybeard
The fearless hide. Championed by Randall Carpio.
----
* BrassBalls: Literally called "The Fearless One". His name implies that the werewolf is literally incapable of feeling fear, however, his encounter with Rogwan - the demon Emperor of Fear - proves otherwise.
* NervesOfSteel: Both the hide and their selected champion are good under pressure, able to stay in high spirits and fight on in the face of adversity.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Timber]]
!! Timber
The lone hide. Championed by Cassie, and later by Lilith Bathory.
----
* InformedLoner: Is described as "the loner" in the journals kept by the Knights of Saint Christopher yet she still works closely with the other hides.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Midnight]]
!! Midnight (a.k.a Cannon Fodder)
The reckless hide. Championed by Edgar Dupres, Kyle, Jack Morton, and eventually Gabrielle Dupres.
----
* TheBerserker: He makes his champions more reckless and aggressive. Jack phrases it politely by saying that Midnight "doesn't handle emotion well."
* CannonFodder: The unofficial nickname the Knights of Saint Christopher give the hide due to its recklessness. It is used quite literally at times, such as when the hide bonds with Kyle, forcing him to make a suicidal charge into Gabrielle's knife, killing Kyle and causing Midnight to return to his locker unharmed.
* DudeWheresMyRespect: Usually bonds with anyone who gets near it but is hesitant to bond with Jack until he shows the proper respect. Jack has to stop referring to him as "Cannon Fodder" and accept the risk of being his champion.
* FearlessFool: Downplayed. He is perfectly aware of the dangers he exposes himself to, he just doesn’t ‘’care,’’ considering the sacrifice worth it. However, his recklessness isn't considered a positive quality by the rest of the Knights of Saint Christopher, but it is a useful one at times.
* HeroicSacrifice: His ''whole'' role amongst the hides. Past knights refer to him as the "noblest of the knights" because he repeatedly sacrifices himself for the others.
* LeaveNoSurvivors: Midnight's motto is apparently "Strike hard, strike fast, take no prisoners." Bonded to Jack, Midnight noticably amplified his anger and violent tendencies. Bonded to Gabrielle, Midnight outright takes over and insists killing basically everyone who isn't a Knight (and Jack, because he's bonded to Silverback) is the best way to solve the current crisis.
* LeeroyJenkins: The werewolf version of this.
* NobleWolf: Grafton Davis called Midnight "the noblest of the knights" due to always being the one to pull a HeroicSacrifice.
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: ''Hates'' Silverback.
* SavageWolves: He is described by Jack as being "impatient" and definitely encourages Jack's bloodlust and desire for revenge.
* WeHaveReserves: Subverted. Whilst he may constantly pull {{Heroic Sacrifice}}s for the Knights, it means he has a tendency to quickly go through champions, with some - such as Kyle - being unwillingly bonded to Midnight so he can get them killed. However, actual Knights that bond to Midnight do so willingly accepting the risks that come with their role being to sacrifice themselves for others.
[[/folder]]

! The Hermetic Order of the Blue Rose

[[folder:In General]]
* AlphaBitch: The kind of personality the Order seems to attract, or be attracted by. Narcissism and the belief that they're better than "normal" people seems to pervade the Order, even among the lowliest Acolytes, and Neophytes who aren't even in yet. Most everyone in it wants fame, money, power, and so on. The Order helps them get it.
* BlackCloak: The Order have very spiffy, form-fitting yet flowing black cloaklike outfits.
* BlackAndGrayMorality: At their best, the Order are people doing what's necessary to help themselves first and others along the way if possible. At their worst, they're egocentric assholes who believe knowing magic makes them fundamentally better than everyone else (and seem to want to bring in people who already believe they're better than everyone else anyway).
* BloodMagic: Generally portrayed as the "good" version, where magic has a cost, and if the caster doesn't pay it in their own blood, it will be paid by someone else.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: While it's a stretch to call the Order evil, they are definitely not good, but even they frown heavily on necromancy (though Vera is seen performing some in the first episode. . . albeit on an already-dead person to try and determine who killed them, rather than killing someone specifically to invoke necromantic magic). Also, very few in the Order are allowed to be made aware that the ''Fors Factorum'' even exists. . . and of those who are aware, even fewer choose to use it. It's [[CastFromLifeSpan drawback]] is ''that'' big a deal.
* FactionMotto: "Silence. Subservience. Observance."
* FantasticRankSystem: Oh, ''good grief''. Made more complicated by the fact that some ranks can be held concurrently, such as Vera Stone being a Temple Magus and Gnostic Councilor, or Temple Magus and Acting Grand Magus, or Temple Magus and Grand Magus. The ranks are also not spelled out clearly, likely to avoid awkward exposition dumps and AsYouKnow, leaving the audience to infer how they relate to each other through context, dialogue, and how well they understand Latin.
** Disciple: A generic term for an Order member of any rank.
** Neophyte: A "pledge" for the Order, one who may or may not make it in.
** Acolyte: The lowest rank of those properly in the Order, generally relegated to doing scutwork for those of higher rank.
** Medicum: The level where you first start getting authority and power (over Acolytes).
** Magistratus: More senior, but still lower-ranked, members. The rank at which you can access the [[MagicalLibrary Reliquary]] without supervision.
** Temple Magus: The leader of a local chapter of the Order, such as Vera Stone being the Temple Magus for the Belgrave Chapter, thus the ultimate authority within the university (unless someone of higher rank drops by to throw their weight around).
** Adepti: Described as "field agents" for the Order. Note that "Adepti" is the plural of "Adeptus," but whether "Adepti" includes the Adeptus Major and Adeptus Superior ranks (see below) or not is not elaborated upon.
** Adeptus Minor: From the existence of Adeptus Major and Adeptus Superior, it can be inferred this rank exists, though it has not been named onscreen thus far.
** Adeptus Major: Apparently a senior rank held by some Gnostic Councilors, like Jason Priestly.
** Adeptus Superior: Seems to be a rank just under that of Grand Magus.
** Gnostic Councilor: Seems to be less an official rank and more that you have been appointed to the Council, whose job it is to act as a brake on the power of the Grand Magus.
** Grand Magus: The leader of the Order as whole, they have considerable, but not absolute, power within the Order. Though as Edward Coventry shows, sufficient charm and political savvy can overcome the "not absolute" part.
* HumanSacrifice: For when BloodMagic isn't enough.
* NoodleIncident: The Order is apparently famous for its magic sex orgies, but they stopped practicing sex magic in TheEighties.
* WhiteMaskOfDoom: The Order has several models of mask to go with their black cloaks, each model seeming to indicate a specific rank. Acolytes and Medicai wear mostly blank white masks, Magistrati get masks with long beaks reminiscent of PlagueDoctor, Councilors wear ornate metallic masks, and the Grand Magus gets a full plus-size goat skull complete with massive horns.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Alyssa Drake]]
!! Alyssa Drake
--> '''Played by:''' Creator/SarahGrey
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/alyssa_drake.png]]
[[caption-width-right:350:]]
A low-ranking member of the Order, bucking for promotion, and Jack's love interest.
----
* BrokenAce: In the first season, she's described as one of the most intelligent and promising members of the Belgrave Chapter of the Order. Come Season Two, something is wrong with her magic, making even the simplest spells go awry to catastrophic effect. Alyssa cannot cope with life without magic, setting up almost the entirety of the conflict in Season Two.
* BrokenPedestal: Edward Coventry. She idolosies the man, defends his actions and has plenty of feelings for him. However, when he orders her to murder Vera and bring him his son Maddox to be a HumanSacrifice she finally realises he's crossed the MoralEventHorizon.
* EvilFormerFriend: While it's a stretch to call her "evil," she and Lilith were best friends in the Order together, until Lilith got kicked out for reasons as-yet unrevealed. From Alyssa's point of view, Lilith is also a case of this to her. Becomes this herself to pretty much everyone in Season Two when she joins Praxis.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: ZigZagged all to hell. She ''is'' the most morally upstanding member of the Order we've met (though that's not saying much). She firmly believes they do good, and can do much more good, but fully realizes there's a few bad apples. Edward gets her help with the ''Vade Maecum'' by telling her they can use it to make the world so much better. Though it should be noted, she had no problem with (and was even very excited about) participating in a big, rare, powerful ritual that required several human sacrifices, though those sacrifices ''did'' need to be willing and the Order would be looking after the volunteers' families as compensation for participation. By the first season finale, she's erased Jack's memories of the Order and walked away from their relationship, though she clearly does feel bad about it. Come Season Two, and her entire arc boils down to "The Road To Hell Is Paved With Good Intentions."
* HeWhoFightsMonsters: In Season Two, as a direct response to Vera Stone's IDidWhatIHadToDo leadership style, she takes to joining and then leading Praxis, and doing things ''far'' more questionable than Vera ever did.
* HeelFaceTurn: In Season Two, after being lied to one too many times bey Vera, throws her lot entirely behind Salvador and Praxis, prepared to bring about a freaking apocalypse just to get her way.
* LaserGuidedKarma: Alyssa removes Vera's magic at the end of Season 2, and refuses to return it even after she succeeds in her goal. This stabs her in the ass as she's almost immediately (as in, mere seconds later) given a gaping bite wound in her neck by Midnight, and with Vera unable to heal her with magic, she dies a horrible, painful death. Though it's somewhat ambiguous if Alyssa was unable to return Vera's magic due her wound, or if she chose not to in order to spite Vera and die on her own terms, rather than owe Vera her life.
* ReluctantLoveInterest: She refused Jack's interest initially, both because it's wildly inappropriate given their different ranks in the Order and she had her own ambitions she wanted to pursue. She's pretty clearly attracted to him very quickly, and stops resisting his advances before long.
* SurprisinglySuddenDeath: The finale of Season Two. She's gotten the ''Fors Factorum'' from Vera, has closed the Apocalypse Eruption, and is leaving the Temple to bring magic to the masses...when Midnight pops up and tears her throat out.
* TeacherStudentRomance: Downplayed. She starts as Jack's tutor in the Order, but quickly relinquishes this responsibility to help Edward with the ''Vade Maecum'', and because of the UST between her and Jack. She's no longer his official tutor when they start their relationship, but she informally instructs him a few times.
* TookALevelInBadass: After fixing her magic by severing her bond with the ''Vade Maecum'', Alyssa gets a notable power-up. Largely, this seems to be due to practicing magic the Order frowns upon but Praxis has no problem with, having access to artifacts stolen from the Order by Praxis that would normally be kept under lock and key from a lowly medicum or magistratus, and having possession of the ''Vade Maecum'', which Vera states is still a spellbook whose individual spells can still be used without the rituals and sacrifices required to [[AGodAmI gain godlike power.]]
* WeUsedToBeFriends: She and Lilith used to be in the Order together and were very close friends, but Lilith's memory was erased when she was expelled from the Order.

The leader (Grand Magus) of the Order.
----
* AGodAmI: Him, after starting to tap the power of the ''Vade Maecum''.
* AnswersToTheNameOfGod: This exchange:
-->'''Coventry''': I'm dissolving the Gnostic Council.\
'''Kepler''': ''(OhCrap face)''\
'''Coventry''': Not literally.\
'''Kepler''': ''(relieved)'' Oh, thank God.\
'''Coventry''': You're welcome.
* ArchnemesisDad: To Jack. He date-raped Jack's mother with CharmPerson magic, causing her to obsess over him until she committed suicide. Jack's grandfather Pete spent years plotting revenge only to discover a conspiracy of corruption and murder with Coventry at the center, so he raised Jack to become TheAce and climb the corporate ladder of Coventry's megacorporation, with the end goal of ruining or murdering Coventry. Coventry's mastery over sacrificial magic and his obsession with an ArtifactOfDoom make this goal even more prevalent.
* BigBad: Of Season 1. Played fairly straight, complete with evil ritual and a cult of followers.
* LivingLieDetector: After beginning to absorb the power the ''Vade Maecum'', this is one of the [[SuperpowerLottery many, many]] abilities Coventry gains.
* LoveRedeems: He admits under a truth potion that he used magic to get women in his youth, but after he met his wife Sophia he stopped practices such as this and tried to become a better person. Though he was wearing an amulet that makes the listener (Vera, in this case) hear what they want to hear in order to circumvent the truth serum, so this admission may not be entirely honest. Vera was certainly aware of his habits, and seemed concerned that he would try to take advantage of Alyssa in such a way, but he never did.
* LukeYouAreMyFather: Is completely unaware that Jack Morton is his son, not connecting him to a girl he put under a love spell and date-raped years ago. When he does learn about it he admits that it wouldn't have changed anything anyway.
* ManipulativeBastard: He has a great personal charisma and a gift for manipulating other people to do his bidding, and charming most of his followers into thinking he can do no wrong. And that's just his natural ability, he's implied to have access to magic that can even more effectively bend a person's will. Vera flat-out warns Alyssa that Edward has a way of making you feel special, like you're the most important person in the world to him. "You are not." He is very strongly implied to have charmed his way not only to the top of the Order, but into the pants of just about every single attractive woman he's crossed paths with.
* MeaningfulName: "Edward" means "guardian of wealth," and as Grand Magus Edward is ultimately the guardian of the Order's accumulated magical wealth and knowledge. "Coventry" is "a state of ostracism or isolation." Despite Edward's charm, charisma, power, and influence in the Order, he's implied to have no serious attachments or bonds with anyone. Even his late wife and living son are implied to be little more than tools on his quest for ultimate power. And as he comes closer and closer to achieving that ultimate power, one by one his followers abandon him (or if they're too scared to abandon him, get removed from the board by the increasing forces aligning against him), until it's just him and the ''Vade Maecum'' standing alone against everyone who wants to stop him. In search for more "wealth" (magical power) to "guard" (keep for himself), he ends up ostracizing and isolating himself.
* RapeIsASpecialKindOfEvil: He placed Jack's mother, Chloe, under a love spell which essentially turned her into his obsessed love-sick thrall. Even worse is that he abandonned her without removing the spell, causing her to be DrivenToSuicide without him. ''Even worse'' is that even after she dies, Chloe's soul is unable to rest until her "beloved" is with her again.
* SeeYouInHell: Coventry's last words to Jack.
* SlowlySlippingIntoEvil: He has some remaining morals at the start of season 1, but he casually discards them in favor of knowledge and power.
* SuperpowerLottery: After beginning to tap the power of the ''Vade Maecum'', Edward gains many new and exciting magical powers, including LivingLieDetector and the ability to control werewolf transformations. He can also [[LudicrousGibs explode people]] with a flick of his wrist.

[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vera_stone.png]]
[[caption-width-right:350:]]
A very sarcastic person, and in charge of the university and of the local branch of the order.
----
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: She's the Temple Magus (leader) of the Belgrave Chapter of the Order, [[RankUp later Gnostic Councilor, Acting Grand Magus, and then Grand Magus]] who's more than capable of destroying a man with a few simple words. Until she loses her magic at the end of Season 2. Justified, since magical knowledge and power is at least half of how you gain rank, status, and influence in the Order (the other half being how well you play the political game, which is where nearly all of Vera's setbacks occur).
* BroughtDownToNormal: Alyssa depowers her at the end of Season 2, leaving her entirely reliant on Hamish for any sort of even mundane spell casting.
* CatchPhrase: "This is the part where you..."
* TheDeadHaveNames: In Season Two, Councilor Kepler is fighting with Vera over her plot involving the Knights, specifically its cost in lives (at this point, only one, who was TooDumbToLive). Vera throws back all the deaths Edward Coventry was responsible for, Kepler retorts that Vera cares about them as much as Kepler does, and bets that Vera can't even remember ''one'' of their names.
-->'''Vera''': Weston. Drea. Amir. Margaret. Gregory. Kyle. Jonas. Hemmings. Ruby. Marty. Diego. Shall I go on?
* DeadpanSnarker: She's incredibly, rudely sarcastic to just about everyone.
* EnemyMine: She joins forces with the Knights to stop the ''vade maecum''. Doesn't stop her from screwing them over after Coventry is banished, though.
* DefrostingIceQueen: In the beginning of the series, she's downright mean to almost everyone. Cut to the midway point of Season 2, and she's a stern but fair leader who refuses to let any harm come to those under her leadership.
* ExplainExplainOhCrap: Positive version. Alyssa points out that a potion called Nephilim's Tears can destroy the ''Vade Maecum'', but Vera has reservations.
-->'''Vera''': It's also impossible to make even if I had my reliquary, so. . .\
'''Jack''': Why's that?\
'''Vera''': Because Nephilim's Tears requires the blood of-- ''(DoubleTake at Jack)'' [[EurekaMoment Son of a bitch.]]\
'''Alyssa''': She means "werewolf."
* FemmeFatalons: Her nails are an ordinarily fashionable length, but noticeably pointy.
* FrontlineGeneral: She's the most powerful member of the Order (at least at Belgrave), yet she gets involved as much as those under her.
* GoodIsNotNice: Vera is undoubtedly the one with the best interests of everyone, Order and otherwise, at heart, and wants to see the bad minimized and the good maximized. But she will do some ''extremely'' bad things to prevent even worse things from happening, including murdering a Councilor and framing Praxis for it to get the emergency powers she needs to neutralize their threat.
* HiddenDepths: Tells Jack she was treasurer of her college improv group. When Alyssa is ransacking Vera's house, she sees a poster for said improv troupe, as well as a newspaper article about "Washington Potato Queen Wins Scholarship," implying both that the improv group was far more important to Vera than she lets on, and that her story is not that dissimilar from Jack's. . . someone who made their way both at Belgrave and in the Order through intelligence and hard work rather than inherited wealth and privilege.
* HotTeacher: She's the Chancellor of Belgrave University (basically the overall head of the university), so doesn't actually teach students, but she does interact with them regularly (especially those in or of interest to the Order), and is the head of the local chapter of the Order, so involved with the instruction of the Order members under her. In Season Two, Randall outright accuses Hamish, several times, of being "Hot for Teacher." And she's played by Creator/KatharineIsabelle.
* IDidWhatIHadToDo: Vera, in many ways, is the ultimate example of a leader. . . someone who makes hard choices, often allowing or even committing a lesser evil for a greater good, and living with the consequences. Notably, while Vera will be unapologetic about doing something bad for a greater good, she ''never'' tries to justify it as anything but a dirty decision that had to be made.
* InconvenientAttraction: Under a truth potion she admits to having a ''LOT'' of UnresolvedSexualTension with Edward Coventry but doesn't act on it because she's also smart enough to see that he's ObviouslyEvil.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: She's aloof and callous to almost everyone, but she isn't a bad person, and shows genuine affection for her charges. While she rarely breaks her mask, she tells Kepler that she remembers every single member who's fallen in the line of duty by name, even the Neophytes.
* MamaBear: While it's not overt, Season 2 shows us that she will do anything and everything possible to avoid letting members of the Order (or regular humans, for that matter) come to harm, up to and including risking her own safety for their own.
* RankUp: Vera gets promoted from a Temple Magus to Gnostic Councilor in season one. In season two, she assumes Coventry's post as (Acting) Grand Magus, and is eventually elected genuine Grand Magus. Notable in that Vera is described as not particularly ambitious, consistently putting the good of the Order as a whole above her own desires.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: ZigZagged. She's far more moral than most of the Order higher-ups, and is repeatedly stated to always do what she thinks is best for the Order as a whole, instead of her own personal ambitions. She's the only one who actively opposes Edward's attempts to reunite and use the ''Vade Maecum''. She's also quite understanding of Acolytes new to the Order getting tempted and performing unsanctioned magic, letting even a murder go by with a "try not to do it again." That said, levying no punishment at all against an Acolyte she thinks ''accidentally murdered someone with magic'' is a bit beyond "reasonable," and she completely fucks over the Knights after they help her stop Edward and destroy the ''Vade Maecum'' by having their memories erased and taking back all their "confiscated" magical books and artifacts. That said, Season Two reveals she wasn't doing this to eliminate the Knights, but rather to try and bring them into the Order as a sort of InternalAffairs and practitioners with extra power, to defend the Order more effectively from threats within and without.
* YourApprovalFillsMeWithShame: Kepler is ripping into Vera about not being competent to lead the Order, with Vera firing back that the Order isn't the kind of organization she wants to lead, anyway. Alyssa chooses that moment to walk in with the ''Vade Maecum'' and accuse Vera of keeping it, despite telling everyone it had been destroyed, for her own personal gain. Kepler immediately backpedals, stating that someone who would keep the most powerful incantation ever created all to herself in secret is exactly the kind of leader Kepler would be happy to support. Vera's reaction is 100% pure this trope, especially when, later in the same episode, Vera charges the werewolves to tear the book apart and "for the love of God, never tell me where you hide it," since she can no longer resist its temptation.

* KarmicDeath: Hemmings tortures Randall with his experiments and in response Randall murders him.
* MadScientist: Abducts people off the streets and performs secret experiments on them to attempt to make an army of monsters for The Order.
* ManipulativeBastard: When Randall wakes up in his laboratory, he convinces Randall that he willingly signed up for a voluntary test whilst inebriated to impress a girl. Furthmore, he convinces him to stay when he pretends the girl is still around.

One of the Gnostic Councilors for the Hermetic Order of the Blue Rose.
----
* TheDragon: Fully supportive of Coventry's goal of uniting the ''Vade Maecum,'' though at least partially due to fear of his power, especially when he began to tap the ''Vade Maecum''. She did most of Coventry's dirty work in the last few episodes of Season One.
* EyeScream: Poor Kepler (or at least, her left eye) has some really rotten luck. She loses it at the end of Season One during the attack on the Den, finally manages to grow it back. . . then has it and the skin around it turned reptilian after a Tartarus Eruption late in Season Two.
* EyepatchOfPower: In the first few episodes of Season Two, thanks to losing an eye in the failed attack on the Den. She eventually grows it back (werewolf wounds are tricky to heal).
* JerkassHasAPoint: Vera constantly laments how Kepler keeps challenging Vera's decisions. Kepler constantly points out that the Council, and her position as Councilor, is to act as a safeguard on the power of the Grand Magus, to which Vera will retort that it would have been nice if Vera herself wasn't the only Councilor actually doing that job when Coventry was in charge, with Kepler especially backing Coventry wholeheartedly. Kepler's constant interference in Vera's plots may be a sign Kepler learned her lesson from how close Coventry came to unlimited power on her watch.
* KilledOffForReal: By Randall as HumanSacrifice for a spell to bring Lilith back from Hell.
* ObstructiveBureaucrat: To Vera when Vera is Acting Grand Magus. Vera often notes that Kepler was ''far'' more supportive of Coventry when he was up to '''far''' worse things than Vera is, and laments that Kepler keeps challenging her decisions apparently based on nothing more than personal enmity between the two.

* FrameUp: He gets forcibly transformed by Midnight's hide into a werewolf and stabbed to death by Gabrielle, making him look like the very werewolf he had been hunting.
* HeroicSacrifice: The Knights joke that he did this for them, even though he really had no say in the matter and he certainly wouldn't view it like that.
* {{Jerkass}}: His defining feature, at least in all his interactions with Jack.
* MoochingMaster: He is assigned to tutor Brandon. He has him do his laundry more often than teaching him magic.

* MentalAffair: Gabrielle tricks him into believing their having real sex, when in fact she's just using magic on him to make him think they are so he'll actually teach her magic like he's supposed to.
* MoochingMaster: He is assigned to tutor Gabrielle. Instead of teaching her magic, he instead has her deliver him tacos at 2am and constantly hits on her.

A snobby and snooty Acolyte in the Order. In Season 2, she becomes Jack's handler.
----
* AbusiveParents: Maybe? When she bonds with Midnight and dives into the Collective Unconscious, Kyle tries to convince her to take up Midnight's job of neutralizing Silverback by killing Jack. Gabrielle doesn't want to go along with it, so her father shows up to berate her for being useless and stupid. Her father is, apparently, actually dead at this point, since only dead people show up in the Collective Unconscious (unless you're "near death" and travel there), and mentions that "I should have left the money to your sister." Based on Gabrielle's responses, this behavior isn't out of character for her father, and they don't seem to have had a very warm or healthy relationship.
* AmbitionIsEvil: In Season One, she is eager to throw other Order members like Alyssa under the bus to secure her own rise within the Order. She's so over the line that even ''Edward Coventry'' thinks she's too ambitious for her own good.
-->'''Edward:''' "I see your hunger, Gabrielle Dupres. It's bigger than you are."
* AntiquatedLinguistics: Gabrielle once insults Hamish and Randall by calling them yaldsons. Randall is baffled by this, and Hamish has to explain that it's an old term meaning {{son of a whore}}.
* AscendedExtra: Season 1 has her as a PerkyFemaleMinion for Coventry. Season 2 has her become a SixthRanger to the established Knights of St. Christopher, acting as their team mage before she herself dons Midnight's pelt.
* BewareTheSillyOnes: Behaves like a stereotypical rich spoiled princess, absolutely unable to cope if things don't go exactly her way, but quickly reveals an intelligence and capacity for scheming that lets her advance quickly in both Order status and magical ability. She's also a psychology major. . . not because she wants to be a psychologist, but because she wants to be able to identify and exploit her enemies' weaknesses.
* FromNobodyToNightmare: In Season One she starts off as just another SpoiledBrat using magic to take advantage of people. She ends up with a lot of influence in the Order. Perhaps slightly subverted in that Vera makes it clear at the end of the season that she's on her second, and ''last'', chance, after having backed Coventry to the hilt. In Season Two she continues to gain magical knowledge and power, making connections to rise in the Order, and befriends the Knights. Becomes this trope literally when she gets bonded with Midnight and becomes a werewolf on top of being a fairly talented magic practitioner, especially with Midnight being the most [[LeeroyJenkins kill-happy]] of werewolves.
* GrandTheftMe: Ends up bonding to Midnight, who takes charge completely most of the time. Midnight ''really'' doesn't like Silverback.
* IJustWantToHaveFriends: Implied when she starts hanging out with Randall and Hamish in Season Two. She seems to like the fact that she's met two people who won't take any of her shit, and hand it right back more often than not.
* ItsAllAboutMe: Oh, so very much. In probably her [[EvilIsPetty pettiest]] example, Jack's blonde hair, the specific shade, was picked especially by her "so we wouldn't clash," and when Jack asks why she cares how his hair looks, she can only answer "I care how it makes '''me''' look!"
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Buried deep in there is a good person who does have morals and empathy beyond her own self-centered veneer. Notably, she is utterly terrified at what she's done while possessed by Midnight, and cries into Randall's chest after waking up covered in blood.
* LonelyRichKid: What she really is beneath everything. She acts like a snotty little AlphaBitch, but she does come to value her friendships at Belgrave, especially with the Knights and others.
* OddFriendship: Mid-Season Two, starts interacting with Randall and Hamish. Randall points out that Gabrielle is blackmailing them to hang out with her, and he's not exactly wrong. She clicks with them rather quickly, despite being her usual snarkily bitchy self, likely because Randall and Hamish can both be snarky assholes and tend to hand Gabrielle's shit right back to her.
* PetTheDog: Shows Brandon and Jack the glamour spell she tricked Jonas into teaching her, apparently for no gain of her own.
* ReallyGetsAround: Averted. She employs all the tactics of someone who does this but never actually does the deed. She uses glamour spells on Jonas to trick him they're in a physical relationship so he'll agrees to their SexForServices agreement, and in Season 2, despite being Jack's handler by being disguised as his girlfriend she uses her magic to brainwash him into "waiting for marriage."
* RichBitch: Fits the stereotype to perfection, and then some.
* SixthRanger: She begins to have conflicting loyalties between the Order and the Knights, eventually siding with them more often than not. It culminates with her becoming a werewolf herself.
* SmallNameBigEgo: Despite being only an Acolyte - the lowest member within The Order - she has a real problem with the "subservience" part of The Order's motto. Throughout Season 1, she acts like she's untouchable just because she's in The Order, despite many older and wiser Order members constantly telling her that she's not. When Vera gives her permission to go on a werewolf hunt in ''Undeclared'', she flaunts this over the heads of higher-ranked members of The Order and uses The Glove - a magical artifact that burns your soul when you lie - on them.
-->'''Gabrielle''': "I am Gabrielle ''fucking'' Dupres! I kill werewolves, punish the guilty, and I ''am'' the law."
* TookALevelInBadass: As part of GrandTheftMe. Midnight is a lot more straightforward, and lot more powerful, than Gabrielle was on her own. . . and Gabrielle wasn't exactly a pushover her own self.
* WellDoneDaughterGirl: Based on the brief interaction with her father in the Collective Unconsious, a lot of her issues stem from her never having earned her father's approval, respect, or love.

* DefectorFromDecadence: Is willing to quit The Order along with Jack when Gabrielle goes too far torturing member of The Order in ''Undeclared: Part One''. Although, he doesn't actually have to go through with it since Vera opposes Gabrielle's actions.

Apparently, he missed the memo that ''they're werewolves'', and antagonizing them can be a lethally bad idea. Downplayed in that the wolves never actually physically harm him, but his relentless antagonism (and going outside acceptable Order practice to do so) gets him demoted down to Acolyte.

* InLoveWithTheMark: Begins to reciprocate Lilith's advances after a few months of being her "handler." Nicole claims she repeatedly tried to brainwash Lilith into not having feelings for her, out of fear that she had been the one to accidentally instill them in the first place.
* NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished: Was sent from the west coast temple to Belgrave over an unknown incident where she somehow failed the Order by showing too much kindness. She is torn between proving her loyalty to the Order and doing what she thinks is right.
* NiceGirl: In comparison to most of the members of the Order, Nicole is quite pleasant and kind by comparison, showing genuine concern for Alyssa's well-being and being the most reluctant to comply with the Orders more suspect activities. However, despite being as altruistic and ethical as she can be with her magic, as a member of the Order she still has to do a lot of dubious stuff.
* QuestionableConsent: Although Nicole has sworn that she avoided making any memories that would cause Lilith to fall in love with her, she does still enter a relationship with her while still working as Lilith's handler. Made all the more complicated is that by the time they started dating Lilith has secretly regained her memories and is lying to Nicole too.
* TokenGoodTeammate: For the Order, she is by far their kindest member, which is admitedly a low bar but still her genuine reluctance and guilt are noticeable.
* WhatHaveIBecome: Nicole joined the Order because she wanted to help people with magic but at the end of season 2 she has a minor breakdown when she weighs the bad she's done to stay with the Order against the little good she's actually used magic for.

!The Esoteric Sons of Prometheus

[[folder:In General]]
* AndIMustScream: The Egregore trees that form the focus of their order were once people who were transformed into the trees. Jack certainly finds the process exceptionally unpleasant while undergoing it, though the Sons mention that at least one of the trees was a Promethean who died, and becoming Egregore gives him a chance to still be part of their collective.
* EnemyMine: Subverted. Vera tries getting them on board with allying with the Order against Praxis, but the Prometheans have a very high burden of proof to meet before they'll buy a mysterious third party is to blame. By the time Vera gets this proof and gets the Prometheans on board, they've lost almost all their order to rogue werewolf attack, and are thus a non-entity in resolving the Praxis plot.
* GreenThumb: One of their main uses for magic. They talk a lot about how their magic relies on a delicate balance and exists in harmony with the Earth.
* HiveMind: Thanks to "juice" made from sap tapped from Egregore trees, they are all linked in this way.
* UncannyVillage: Seems like a utopian agricultural society of mages, but their also a creepy cult-like HiveMind.
[[/folder]]

!Praxis

[[folder:In General]]
* AnarchyIsChaos: ZigZagged. They don't believe this, but the fact that they're spreading magic around (and performing it improperly) is creating quite a bit of chaos that the Order is trying to reign in for the good of all. Praxis believes that spreading magic around is for the good of all.
* BombThrowingAnarchists: Basically what they turn into. Except the bombs are magical. And potentially [[FantasticNuke nuclear.]]
* DoWrongRight: While the Order would still be gunning for Praxis for being magical practitioners outside the Order's control, and being pretty flagrant about it, the fact that they're performing magic ''incorrectly'' is literally the bigger concern. Too many people doing too much magic in too wrong a way creates large-scale Tartarus Eruptions, basically explosions of random chaos that can do anything and everything to anyone in their immediate vicinity. As magic itself becomes more unstable thanks to this, things can build up to an [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin Apocalypse Eruption]].
* HistoryRepeats: Vera snarks that a world filled with magic and wonder sounds beautiful, "Now why hasn't anyone ever thought of that before? Oh that's right. They have." Given her tone (acerbic even for Vera), it has '''never''' ended well.

[[folder:Professor Cameron Foley]]
!! Professor Foley
--> '''Played by:''' Creator/MattyFinochio
[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/foley.png]]
Belgrave's new Ethics professor.
----
* ApatheticTeacher: Shows up to class hungover and easily loses track of his lesson plan.
* BerserkButton: Does not take challenges to his abilities or qualifications well, either as a practitioner of magic or an Ethics professor.
* CasualDangerDialogue: When he is captured, he initially casually talks back to his captors and apparently at one point shared a Rice Krispie treat recipe instead of spilling valuable information.
* ContrastingReplacementCharacter: For Professor Clarke as the Ethics professor. Where Clarke was encouraging and open-minded about his students and clearly had a passion for the subject of ethical debate, Foley is critical, secretive and defensive around his students and has a ''very'' twisted sense of ethics.
* DirtyCommunists: While Praxis itself is a more anarchist left group, Foley is implied to be a more traditional Marxist-Leninist based on his residence-he has a positive political biography of Stalin on his bookshelf for instance. And he is depicted as generally unpleasant even if he is in theory a WellIntentionedExtremist.
* RedHerring: The early episodes really work to hint there's something sinister, or at least not quite right, about him. When Praxis is revealed, he's set up to seem the founder and leader of the movement. He's not, he's the fall guy, the true power behind Praxis is his unassuming TA, Salvador Grant.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Salvador Grant]]
!! Salvador Grant
--> '''Played by:''' Diana Bang
[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/salvador_5.jpg]]
Professor Foley's TA.
----
* BigBad: The true BigBad of Season Two. Much like Edward Coventry, comes complete with search for TomeOfEldritchLore and cult of dedicated followers.
* MeaningfulName: "Salvador" means "savior," and she definitely sees herself as one. "Grant" can mean "to give," so her name could be read to mean "giver of salvation."
* {{Necromancer}}: "I dabble," she says. Alyssa points out that the only divination precise enough to have given her such an edge over the Order and Knights is necromancy, and Salvadore uses this future knowledge to win over Alyssa by predicting how things will play out between her and the Order with 90% accuracy.
* NinjaPirateZombieRobot: A skilled and powerful magic practitioner and werewolf bonded with the hide of Alpha.
* NoMrBondIExpectYouToDine: Cooks risotto for her and Alyssa while they're both in Vera's house looking for something. This is the big turning point for Alyssa's character arc in Season Two.
* NonindicativeName: On the other hand, "Salvador" is Spanish, "Grant" is a generic European surname, but Salvador Grant is Asian.
* PrinciplesZealot: Her overriding belief is in the freedom of the individual, even in the freedom of Alyssa to go back to Vera with the ''Vade Maecum'' and use its power against her. Then again, through necromancy, she's also more knowledgeable about the future than most, so sticking to her principles when it seems stupid is less of a gamble for her.
* RedHerring: In several ways. First, she seems to just be Foley's TA and assistant in bring Praxis to power. When it's revealed Praxis has a werewolf, it's assumed it's Foley who bonded with Midnight's hide when he stole the lockers from the Knights. Then Foley is revealed to be a patsy and Salvador the true power, but it's still assumed she's bonded to Midnight. It isn't until much later that it's revealed she's bonded to Alpha, and that she is the daughter of Grafton Davis, Alpha's previous champion.
* TakingYouWithMe: Blames the Order, and thus Vera, for her father's death, as well as hording magic for themselves so they can live in luxury while the rest of the world suffers. During a parlay with Vera, while the two are affected by a spell that will cause any harm done to one to happen to the other as well, Salvador pops her werewolf claws ([[{{Fingore}} splitting Vera's fingers open in the process]]) and prepares to slash her own throat.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: Believes in giving magic to everyone, that the power of magic given freely to all who want it can only make a better, kinder, more peaceful world. There's definitely some benefits to her way of thinking. . . and some '''huge''' drawbacks, which is probably why it's never worked in the past.

!! Professor Eric Clarke
--> '''Played by:''' Creator/SamTrammell
[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/eric_clarke.png]]
Belgrave's Ethics professor in Season 1.
----
* CoolTeacher: He is Jack's favorite teacher.
* EasilyForgiven: Holds no grudge against Jack, despite his dead, to the point he’s happy to act as a SpiritAdvisor upon occasion. It probably helps that death has made him TheOmniscient, and given him all the details.
* MentorOccupationalHazard: His Introduction to Ethics class is given much focus in the early episodes, as is his personal teacher-student relationship with Jack, providing much guidance to Jack early in his infiltration of the Blue Rose. Jack even states Clarke is his favorite teacher. So it's probably no surprise he's dead by episode three.
* TheSocialExpert: As an Ethics professor he is able to control a classroom and capable of quickly reading the true intent behind people's words.
* SpiritAdvisor: Helps Jack decide between Silverback and Midnight when he bonds to two hides.
* TricksterMentor: A bit of this in regards to his students in general, but Jack in particular.

[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/robin_benson.png]]
Belgrave's English professor.
----
* HotTeacher: Played by Julia Benson. She confuses Jack's fear for her safety as "inappropriate interest" from student to teacher, with a tone that implies she gets at least one every year.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Clay Turner]]
!! Clay Turner
--> '''Played by:''' Dylan Playfair
[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/clay_4.png]]
Jack's roommate who is also a [[spoiler:golem.]]
----
* ChekhovsGunman: Active behind-the-scenes in the first episode, becomes the primary antagonist for the second, then is seemingly forgotten until the last episode of Season One, where Jack reanimates him to help the heroes win the day.
* EruditeStoner: Presents this way, since he's naturally curious about human life and experience, since he has neither, and has an outsider's perspective on the human condition. Especially the concept of death. . . for him death has no meaning. While the word is on his head he lives, when it's erased he ceases to live until it is written again. He is ''intensely'' curious what it's like to die, to know your existence is finite and can be cut short at any moment, and what may or may not lie beyond.
* HeelFaceRevolvingDoor: Is only and utterly loyal to whoever his master is. . . meaning the person who most recently wrote the word on his forehead and gave him life. He has no real morality of his own, being merely an extension of his master's will. So he's fairly evil when following the orders of his original creator Margaret Crain, more evil when following Coventry's orders, and downright heroic when following Jack's orders.
* MeaningfulName: He's a golem. Named [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin Clay]].

[[caption-width-right:350:]]
Jack's grandfather who raised him following his mother's death.
----
* BeardOfSorrow: Already has one at the start of the series but it gets thicker after he speaks to his daughter.
* BestServedCold: He has spent nearly two decades raising his grandson, Jack, to infiltrate The Hermetic Order of the Blue Rose and use their influence to take down Edward Coventry as revenge for Edward causing Pete's daughter to be DrivenToSuicide.
* TheConfidant: Acts as this to Jack as he's trying to infiltrate The Order. But after Jack joins the Order and the Knights he stops telling Pops so much and their relationship begins to deteriorate.
* ConspiracyTheorist: Implied. He easily accepts the supernatural explanations for events and has a distaste for "mainstream media."
* IKnowAGuy: Claims to know someone that can supply him with silver bullets.
* LudicrousGibs: Edward Coventry uses magic to make him ''explode.''
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: Subverted. Is rarely called anything other than "Pops" by Jack. As their relationship deteriorates, Jack increasingly refers to him as "Pete."
* OutlivingOnesOffspring: He outlived his daughter, Chloe, and devotes his life to making Edward pay for her death. When he outlives Jack too he is heartbroken.
* ParentalSubstitute: After Jack's father caused the death of his mother, Pete took Jack in and raised him.
* PhoneCallFromTheDead: Uses the necrophone to speak to his daughter but is horrified to realize that the love spell is still on her even in death.
* UnfazedEveryman: He readily accepts the idea of magic and werewolves far quicker than Jack whose actually witnessing these things.
* TheWitchHunter: Downplayed. Once he learns Edward Coventry is Grand Magus of the Order, he becomes this. However, due to his age and lack of resources he's completely reliant on Jack to do everything.
